Mavericks Draft Rumors On Cooper Flagg + Second Round NBA Draft Targets Ft. Walter Clayton

[Music] What’s going on everybody? You are watching Dallas Mavericks today by chat sports. I’m Jeffrey Cooperstein. Happy Friday to you guys. Hope everyone has a great Memorial Day weekend and stays safe out there. Wanted to talk to you guys about the latest Mavericks rumors surrounding the draft and surrounding Cooper flag and whatnot. And I thought Maverick CEO Rick Weltz had something really interesting, we’ll call it, to say, uh, about winning the lottery and about Cooper Flag. So, let’s hop right in to what Rick Weltz said here. The excitement around this for our fans is just unbelievable. I can’t imagine a more dramatic change in fortune. In fortune. How is it fortunate? It wasn’t luck that you traded away Luca Donuch. It wasn’t unfortunate. You didn’t have bad fortune and Luca didn’t just leave this team voluntarily. No, you kind of did it on your own. You put that on yourself. It’s not a change in fortune. It wasn’t just bad luck. No, you made the mistake of trading him away. I don’t believe in fortune of trading away your best player. Like you can say unfortunate would be your best player like Kyrie Irving tearing his ACL and being out for a year. unfortunate would be, you know, unforeseen circumstances happening. This is unfortunate circumstances that you created on your own. The trade was the worst unforced error in NBA history. You get the chance of correcting said trade by way of extreme luck. You had a 1.8% chance of being able to select Cooper flag and you fortunately won the NBA lottery. That is a fortunate side. the unfortunate side of trading Luca away. You do not get to erase from your history, so to speak. Like I I just the the way of the the manner in which Rick Weltz said that just kind of rubbed me the wrong way. It’s like, yeah, you do get the chance to draft Cooper Flag, but it’s not because you did anything to do it. And that’s why I don’t think Nico Harrison is off the hook whatsoever. He doesn’t get credit for drafting Cooper Flag. He doesn’t get credit for creating the circumstances that led to the Mavericks being able to draft Cooper flag. It was handed to him on a silver platter by the pingpong balls in Chicago. He gets no credit whatsoever for this. And you know, I’m sure that if the Mavericks have success next year that he’ll absolutely take credit for it, as if I were in his position, I would be doing the same thing. But everyone can see that he is not responsible for this. And the luck of the draw is why the Mavericks are going to be relevant again. Because if they didn’t and they still had the 11th overall pick in this draft as opposed to number one, we’d be sitting here for the next 10 years wondering what the hell is going to happen to this franchise. Instead, they get the chance to draft their third generational player over the last 20 years. And they get a chance to rectify what was the worst mistake in NBA history. Not the worst misfortune, the worst mistake. Look, I still think the best course of action is this. I still think moving on from Nico, letting someone else draft Cooper flag and build this thing back up is the best course of action going forward. I know that’s not going to happen because I know Anthony Davis is going to stay here. I know Kyrie is going to stay here. And if you did move on from Harrison, then you’re losing both of those guys. But if it were me running the show, I would have fired him already and I would have made a new GM hire. Cooper Flag would still be a Maverick and somebody else would be running this organization. The I don’t know why that was such a trigger word for me, but the word misfortune, I just did not like that cuz it wasn’t misfortune, it was your own unforced error. But if you’re excited for Cooper Flag on a more positive note, hit that thumbs up icon. All reports is he’s going to be a Maverick in about a month or so. Can’t wait to see Cooper Flag in the blue and white of Dallas. So, hit that like button if you’re excited to see the Dookie here in Dallas. We will get to the rest of the show here in just a few moments, but I do need to tell you guys about our sponsor, which of course is Price Picks, America’s number one daily fantasy sports app. Pric has over 10 million members and billions of dollars in awarded winnings, making daily fantasy sports accessible to all. That link is in the comments and the description. It is Price Picks. Run your game. All right, I wanted to take a look at some second round draft targets that the Mavericks could potentially be looking at here in the coming days and weeks. But, and I know what you’re thinking. Currently, you’re the Mavericks do not own a second round pick. Why do they not own a second round pick, you ask? Because they traded the number 35 overall pick, which is basically a first round pick, to acquire Kayla Martin, who stinks. And Quinton Grimes, by the way, probably going to get a 10, 12, 14 million plus contract this year. So that pick, which was originally owned by the Sixers, by the way, the Mavericks sent back to Philadelphia. So they currently don’t own a second round pick because of this trade, which might be the second worst trade in the NBA this season, by the way. Anyways, I’m too triggered on this Friday. But like I said, with second round, you can always buy picks. You can pay a team 2 million bucks in cash considerations, whatever it is, and you could just have their second round pick. So, it’s always possible that the Mavericks could just do that and get themselves a player in the second round. So, I wanted to bring some draft targets to your attention. Number one, number one, and number two for that matter are not going to be super realistic trade targets, per se, because those guys might be backend first round picks. If not, they’ll be top five of the second round. But, I want to talk about Nolan Trayori for a second. the guard out of France who played in Germany this past season. I think he’s a really, really good point guard prospect. He can kind of do it all. He’s a run the show type point guard. He’s not going to wow you with amazing scoring ability or amazing defense, but he can do it all as a team leader and as like I said, a run the show point guard. So, I really think Trayori is going to be a solid player. And if the Mavs can somehow look if the Mavs had number 35 overall, Trayori would be in play. But, you know, again, they had to trade it. Walter Clayton, national champion out of the Florida Gator. Kind of went on a Steph Curry like run in the NBA tournament where he single-handedly will the Gator to a couple of wins in that tourney. And I think Clayton is a really good scoring guard. Is he going to be a true point guard in the NBA? That remains to be seen. But if the Mavs somehow and if the he gets past pick number 35 36 and he’s still there, I think he could be a really good target for the Mavs who are looking for some point guard play in the first half of the season when Kyrie is out with injury. So keep an eye on Walter Clayton. Kobe Brea out of Kentucky. He’s more of a guard wing. He shot over 40% from three this season with Kentucky. He has experience. He’s played a lot for Kentucky as well. About 67. Pretty good defender. Kobe Brea, someone that I think the Mavs would like because of his defensive versatility. Cam Jones, he’s a true point guard. He played uh guard for Marquette over with Shaka Smart there with the Golden Eagles. Averaged, I think, over five assists this year as well. And again, another one of those guys who was really experienced and played in a winning system over at Marquette. And then Tyrese Proctor, the guard out of Duke, who was a very highly rated overall recruit there at Duke. He spent two years uh with John Sh over there out of Australia. Think he’s kind of like a Nolan Trayori where he’s a run the show type of guy. Not super efficient uh as far as his scoring goes, but I think he has all the abilities to be like a 10-year backup point guard in the NBA. Kind of like a campaign sort of where he can really have a long prosperous career in the NBA. So, there are some five guys to just look at uh and keep in the back of your mind. Again, the Mavericks don’t have a second round pick as we sit right now, but that can certainly change. And who knows? I don’t know if the Mavericks even want to trade into round two. Given where they are uh with the apron and whatnot and the luxury tax and salary cap, it’s extremely possible that the Mavs just want to stand put, take Cooper flag number one overall, and be done with the NBA draft. So, before we get on out of here, you tell me, do you want the Mavs to trade into the second round? Do you think they should go buy a second round pick and take one of those guys I mentioned? Or is there a guy that I didn’t mention that you would want them to go trade in the second round too? If you want them to type Y for yes. If you don’t, type N for no. Let me know down below. That will be it for today’s show, guys. Appreciate you for tuning in. The Mavericks today by Chat Sports. Have a great Memorial Day weekend and let’s go Stars. Hopefully they bring home a victory here tonight. Hit that sub button. It’s youtube.com/mapsv and we’ll see you soon. [Music]

  1. You're so lucky to be rid of the softest player I've seen – Luka. I watched the Celtics destroy him last year. If you miss Luka you don't deserve Cooper. Buncha whiners that don't know basketballl. Luka sucks! He will never win anything. Get tf over it ffs!

  2. There is a reason the Lakers did not pay more than what they did for Luka they saw what his salary was going to have to be plus his negative defensive play in his continuingly arguments with officials that he never learned to control so no Nico did the right thing for the Mavericks. Too bad Kyrie got hurt or we’ve been still playing playoff ball now, but that’s life

  3. Trading Luka was NOT a mistake. Get over it Jeffrey. It was a bold and shocking trade no doubt. But it was NOT a mistake and that will be proven by the next 5 years.

  4. @1:01 Luka is NOT innocent of blame for this trade! If the guy would have put team first he may still be on the team. READ Wonder Boy!

  5. Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth bro!! However u got cooper Flagg u got him he’s probably worth more than a few extra draft picks more we should have gotten in the trade . Turn the page and stop winning about Luka like a girlfriend u lost move on bro !!
