The Spurs SHOULD TRADE Overhyped Stephon Castle!?
quote, “Spurs must trade this overhyped player if they draft Dylan Harper.” Oh boy. [Music] What is up, San Antonio Spurs fans? Welcome to TSR Sports. I hope you’re having a great weekend. And that quote was from Air Alamo, who also said in the article we’re about to go over, “Spurs fans aren’t going to like this.” Do I like this? Let’s get into the article. And let’s get into the article. Stefon Castle was not a strong rookie of the year. If Stefon Castle had been a rookie last season, he likely would have not finished top three in rookie of the year voting. They’re talking about Wendy’s rookie year, followed by Chad Hogram, Brandon Miller. Yeah, he probably would not have been top three. That’s fair. This season, he won the award going away as other rookies stepped up to the plate. As no other rookies stepped up to the plate, excuse me. Stefon Castle is an immensely talented player. Agreed. He’s a heady defender, a smart mover without the basketball, a willing scoreer and playmaker. He played extremely well down the stretch of the season to lock up the rookie of the word. Agree so far. He also submitted one of the most damaging scoring seasons in recent memory last year, shooting only about 43% from the field, just under 29% from beyond the ark. His 14.7 points were the lowest average for rookie of the year winner since Malcolm Braden, just my thing there with his name, in 2016 and 17. Castle could turn into a star or he could turn into Braden, that is a solid starter for many years who has no ideas of a max play. Who has no ideas of a max player given how utterly broken his shot has looked? Okay, time out there. I don’t know. I I watch every Spurs game. Yeah, three-point shot didn’t look great at times. At other times, it looked smooth and fluid, but utterly broke to me. Utterly broke was Jeremy Sohan last year when he’d pull up for the three. He’d stop there’d be the hitch in his shot and then he shot the three. But thank goodness he’s wor he’s worked on getting rid of that. But utterly broken. May maybe I’m missing something again. Maybe I got my Spurs goggles eyes on. Did his shot look utterly broken last season to you guys. It’s very possible Castle is not on a star trajectory. Here we go. The Spurs should trade Stefon Castle. Castle’s value may never be higher than it is right now. The shine of rookie of the year may be elevating how other teams around the league view him and he could be a valuable centerpiece of a trade package for another star. The Spurs draft situation talking about this year of course they landed a number two pick in the 2025 NBA draft who are in line to draft Dylan Harvard. I want to pause there as well. You’re putting together a package to trade for another star. They’re going to probably want Castle. You know what they’re also going to want? This number two pick you’re talking about right here. double A Dylan Harper who is clearly a step above Castle as a prospect. Harper would have gone number one with the bullet. What does that mean? I’ve actually never heard that. Number one with the bullet in the 2024 NBA draft. Castle went fourth. The Spurs will be hardressed to fit Harper, Dr. Fox, and Stefon Castle all into the same back court given the shooting limitations of all three. And trying to do so likely only lower Castle’s value. A lot of you said he could play the three spot. I wasn’t sure heightwise. I do think he’s a little short for three. He obviously needs to work on his shooting if he’s going to play the three, but a lot of other guys in the league, you guys have shown me, are similar weights. Uh Brandon Ingram’s taller, but actually weighs less. So, could he play a three spot if we had a big four out there? Uh which Sohan’s not going to be. Then yes, I think he could. But seeing a lineup of Fox, Harper, Castle, Sohan, WHMY, I think that’s just that’s way too small. Unless they’re scoring 150 points a game, which that would be fun, too, but I don’t see that happening. Anyway, where was I? Where was I? The best the best way. Okay, let’s talk about the number two pick. They rather use number number two pick and land a star moving on from Fox. Suddenly, the best way to maximize their asset is to include Castle in a trade offer. We’re almost done with this. He is in Castle has an inability to score in efficiently. And while that could improve, it’s not a given. You know, it’s not a given that Dylan Harper is going to be a stud. He’s played zero NBA minutes. Yes, the potential is there, but how many guys on our own spurs have we had that potential, potential, potential, and nothing. No longer a spur. I expect Dan Harpie very good. Maybe he’ll be great. Don’t know that yet. I have not seen him play in the NBA. There’s been a lot of picks. We know, we’ve talked on the channel, guys that look like they’re going to be studs and then they become duds. Trading him now before the Bloom falls off the rose could net them a true co-star for WBY. If the Spurs draft Ellen Harper, which they absolutely should do and probably will do, then their next step is finding the right trade package to build around Stefon Castle. All right, my thoughts on this. I’m not going to argue Stefon Castle was inefficient. The stats are right there. The 20-year-old rookie splits were rounding up on all cases I’m about to go over for the record 432972. Rounding up when applicable. 43 2972. I was looking at other notable rookie guards in the history of the NBA, at least recent for me. Kobe Bryant, an 18-year-old Kobe came into the league shooting 42382. And I know there’s other intangibles there. There’s rebounds, assist, steals, blocks, etc., but just looking at shooting splits. Kobe is 42 382. What if the Lakers said Kobe has a little inefficient in his rookie season? Let’s move. I know he’s young. He’s a rookie. Let’s move on from him. Alan Iverson 21y old working 42 3470 Jason Kidd 20-year-old rook working 392 27 70 and last but not least for us fans our own Manu Jernobi who was 25 years old as an NBA rookie so he had a lot of experience coming to the league did he not his shooting splits were 442574 percentage about one higher than Castle three-point percentage about three as a rounding some rounding in there, but three or four lower and free throws just barely above Castle. What if the Spurs after Manoli’s rookie year said, “Yeah, this guy was just a second round pick. He’s going to be 26 next season. He wasn’t the most efficient scoreer. Let’s move on from Janoli. Let’s get somebody else. We’re we’re good. Rookies struggle with their shot at times. He struggled clearly, but all the guys I just mentioned were Hall of Famers. And I’m not saying Stefon Castle is a Hall of Famer. I’m not saying he’s the next Kobe Bryant or Allen Iverson, but there are intangibles I see with Steph. I see that there’s no fear that that I’ve mentioned it before on the channel. A little bit of that mama mentality when he messes up, turnover, plays bad, whatever it is, doesn’t seem to phase him. We’ve seen games where he was horrible in the first half and then just went off in the third quarter or fourth quarter. It he just there’s something about him that makes me say, “Hey, he’s got that it factor that not every NBA player has.” And when you find somebody with that it that’s a player you should keep on the team. Now if he stays inefficient like this next year then I’ll certainly be like we were wrong about him but he’s doing the work. Just got to get that shot percentage up. And this is just in general get your field goal percentage up your three-point percentage your free throw percentage. Just work on the shot which I have faith he does. And if he doesn’t then well this would be a bummer. In closing my opinion of this article I think it’s stupid. I would call it like I see it. I think the article is stupid. I get the trade value part, but again, if Harper doesn’t pan out, that could really effers in the long run. I’m sure the Spurs will listen, but I I many like you probably know I got Are 51 goggles on and I’m hoping, you know, our big big uh big core five years from now, I I think Darren Fox will be off the team five years from now will be WBY and the back court of Castle and Harper. So, drop a comment down below your thoughts on this. Do you do you actually on their side you’re like you know what I get it on’s right sorry castle’s value is high right now let’s trade him for somebody or you like no he’s untradeable is he part of that untradeable webmy’s obviously untradeable is he part of that untradeable spur package if you like support the channel hope you have a great day thank you and as always go spurs [Music]
Stephon Castle’s trade value may never be higher, should the Spurs trade him if the package is right?

Well, these comments should be interesting. Remember, Air Alamo's idea, not mine! Thanks for watching and GO SPURS GO! (TP was probably a better example than Kobe near the end. Dang it!)

Air Alamo contradicts themselves every time they put an article out. It's a young person that knows nothing about the game and just write what they hear from sports pundits.
What an awful take and the lack of vision since castle and (hopefully) Harper are the future guards of the team while Fox is just a stop gap while development runs its course
Well, I see through those same Spurs-colored glasses, but have to admit, the article makes some good points. Since Stephon is such a good defender, I thought I would compare his rookie year to another good defender, Kawhi Leonard, who also had to work on his shot to become great. Turns out, Kawhi was the better shooter as a rookie, but Stephon had higher volume and points, as well as many more assists. Here is the comparison (hope the formatting doesn't get screwed up):
Player GP MPG PPG APG RPG FG% FG Makes/Attempts 3P% 3P Makes/Attempts FT%
Kawhi Leonard (2011-12) 64 24.0 7.9 1.1 5.1 49.3% 3.1/6.3 37.6% 0.6/1.7 77.3%
Stephon Castle (2024-25) 81 28.5 14.7 4.1 3.7 42.8% 5.9/13.8 28.5% 1.2/4.2 72.4%
If we get Harper and trade Castle, yes we get a better shooter and scorer, but we lose defensive ability. If we keep Castle and use the #2 pick to get a high-scoring big (preferably a trade for an NBA-ready vet), Steph's shot will improve because he is a driven, highly-motivated person. Either way (trading Castle or trading the #2 pick), we should be able to put together an attractive trade package for a high-level 3-and-D big (I mean 6'10" to 7'1" – apologies to Sochan) to play alongside Victor. If we draft Harper and keep Castle, it would be hard to put together a trade package for a needed top-level player. And besides, that wouldn't be fair to these two young stars because they would steal minutes from each other in the near-term since Fox is the PG.
Well I don’t blame the person for feeling that way. A lot of Spurs fans actually feel that way and have suggested trading Castle. Trading Castle and keeping the #2 pick and draft future Hall of Famer and MVP Harper! Don’t you know that Harper is better in EVERY category than Castle? The odd man out is Castle or Fox for our future GOAT , the #2 pick!! I don’t feel that way but I been reading a lot of that stuff lately!
I actually agreed with the article. Castle is not really an exceptional rookie. Its not about replacing Castle with Harper. But its about trading Castle for a star and waiting for Harper to develop to be at least decent. You cannot surround Wemby with a non shooting guard who cannot effectively pass. I see him as a Dennis Smith Jr. to Luka
He is not wrong. Castle is the weakest ROY in a while
No, that writer just wants Giannis on the Spurs. This is what I mean when I talk about sports media today. They act as tho their opinion on what stars might play together is somehow good media. It’s stupid, it takes no skill, it’s an attempt at trying to make 2K roster building a reality, it’s part of this instant gratification era we live in, and what they don’t say is how damaging it will be if it fails. Which it is more likely to do, and instead of having a future, they’ll look at a rebuild which these same idiot writers also get excited about. They’re just as guilty as the stars who team up to win, which has hurt the NBA and is partly to blame for ppl not watching anymore. I hope the Spurs don’t fall for this bc it would be stupid
It would be idiotic to trade Castle. Spurs need to focus on size in their front line. The one thing all these teams left have in common is their front courts are giant.
I love and hate this time of year. The part I love is the potential for SA to make another leap forward. The part I hate is that the month before the draft is filled with every kind of nonsense imaginable. We have send trades projected for SA that have included just about every big potential free agent and we have seen SA paired at 14 with just about every first rounder that might be available and a few that probably won’t be available.
I’m done with BS like this. SA needs to build on its base, not throw pieces of its base away. All of this is being caused by the fact that the best available player at No. 2 is a guard, but that just isn’t a good enough reason. Taking Harper at 2, IMHO, just means you can’t trade away the 14th pick: you need to add a wing or a big and then trade for whichever one you did not draft.
My vote is still to get a big or, at the very least a stretch 4/5 at 14. The reason is simple. SA needs a player to can contribute now and it is easier to see a big logging significant minutes next year, even if all they do is protect the rim and get offensive rebounds.
Other than that, I recommend taking a break from all the media sources who basically just need something to talk about between now and the draft.
Nothing interesting to report these days I see
Is he a Houston writer
No Castle absolutely not
Mr TSR
Hell to the MF No……
I see Castle as a Jimmy Butler type of player : a SG/SF, secondary ball handler, defender, finisher. He needs to improve his shot and defense.
My concern : he's a #4 draft pick so his salary will be huge, for now he's not talented enough to deserve a max contract one day, and it will become a big problem if he wants it 🤔
Hell no, big miss by this article. Castle is a keeper
I read Air Alamo but I prefer Pounding the Rock because at least you can address the short comings of the author. This is one of those "let say crap, throw it at the wall and see what sticks" comments. Obviously not a Spurs viewer. I have limited basketball knowledge but even I know this is total horse hocky (shout out to Colonel Potter).
Unintellectual and misinformed article there is no way the Spurs are gonna trade away Castle for nothing in return. He is the future of the franchise with Wembanyama.
I don’t know who the hell this “air Alamo” is… He’s high and full of “dung”! Castle has too many great NBA intangibles! Like being a lock down defender on the perimeter! And takes it to the cup when need be!

ALSO….! Dylan Harper will be our scoring closer in 3 years! Mark it! He will be a superstar!
I think there's a real chance that the plan with Harper is for him to be the 6th man and as he matures, he grows into the "Manu role" (who was also a lefty) of torching other teams bench units…
I feel like Castle is gonna play a similar role Kawhi did for us
