Major Chris Boucher Update… – Raptors Changes Incoming? | Raptors News

We have some major updates on the longest tenure Toronto Raptor in Chris Bucher who is an impending free agent this upcoming off season and had a very interesting year last year. Of course, the Toronto Raptors moved in a younger direction in a rebuilding year. Gave a lot of run to guys like Jonathan Mo to Jameson Battle to see what they have in those players, especially during the back half of the season. And that led to Chris Buchet getting outright benched by this squad despite having a really productive season when he was actually out there on the basketball court. And now as an impending free agent, there’s a lot of question marks about whether or not he’ll be back because the Raptors did trade for Brandon Ingram are looking to be competitive next season. So Chris Buchet in terms of timeline starts to fit in a lot better next year than he did last year. But there’s a lot of new updates that have come out in regards to how the Raptors are feeling about Chris Buché and what the predictions are in terms of NBA insiders about Chris Buché’s future with the Toronto Raptors because of course he is a fan favorite and he’s a guy that frankly I want to just bring up the fact he was great last season. Yes, he’s 32. Yes, he’s a bit older than our core, but averaged 10 points per game, 4.5 rebounds, shot 36% from behind the three-point line. And for a guy that’s 69, has those long arms and shot close to 40% out there on corner threes last year, he is exactly the archetype, the role player that if you are moving in the direction of a winning team, he has experience. He has just a lot of, you know, miles out there in the NBA, but isn’t, you know, injuryprone, doesn’t deal with a lot of the stuff that some older players do. Chris Bouche is the perfect kind of fit, some would argue, in terms of what the Toronto Raptors are trying to do next year. But as we’ve seen, the Toronto Raptors last season did not uh give him a ton of run. And you see the game logs for Chris Buchet basically following the the 50 last game, the 50 well or sorry, game 60 if I can look at numbers correctly to 82. Chris Buchche was just dnped and it wasn’t injuries. It wasn’t I think a couple games there were some injury reports, but for the most part, this is just a coach’s decision situation. Now, Messiah Juri came out there at the end of his end of season press conference and directly stated that we love Chris Buchet. It was one of the toughest things that they had to go through last season to bench him because of course they had to see what was going on regarding uh you know Jonathan Mo and uh Jameson Battle who are two guys that have put up very interesting stats themselves in their rookie years. You know Jonathan Bobo you know limited run, some solid minutes but really fills up the stat sheet every time that he’s out there. 6.2 two points per game, five rebounds, two assists. You know, showed some upside out there as a three-point shooter. He’s not a good three-point shooter by any stretch of the imagination right now. But even though he’s uh 23 years old, still a rookie, still has a lot of room to grow. And then Jameson Battle at that forward spot, right? Really knocked down threes at a high clip. The percentages dipped a little bit when he shot at a high volume, but when he was shooting on lighter volume, it was close. The mid-4s in terms of three-point percentage and 50s, you know, in terms of corner threes, you know, last season, 7.1 points per game, seven and 2.7 rebounds. There’s a lot of decisions that have to be made and as you can see as well the Toronto Raptors impending free agency situation. We have PJ Tucker who didn’t report to the team last year and Chris Buché as our main money that’s coming off the books as well as you know Garrett Temple. So what’s going on? Because the Raptors are a team that in the NBA standings were not competitive and what’s happening well basically reports are coming out here now that he probably belongs to a contending team. Babushe, who went to high school in Quebec, is at home with the Toronto Raptors and is the lone remaining player from that 2019 title team. So basically, a lot of people, a lot of experts, people in Kevin Pelton of ESPN reported this, but expect Chris Buché to be moving on to a team that is a contender cuz a team that’s trying to compete, but the Toronto Raptors are a team that’s trying to get back in that mix for this upcoming year. You don’t trade for Brandon Ingram if that’s not the case. So Chris Buché does fit in better with the squad right now and basically reports have come out that he is still interested in playing for this team. According to Grange, according to multiple sources, there’s mutual interest in having Chris Buché return for his eighth season in Toronto. And of course, this might sound a little bit jarring because they didn’t even play him last year. And it’s, you know, say what you want about Chris Buché’s maturity, about, you know, his ability to just go with the punches, you know, roll with everything. having your GM, your coaches, his bench you during a season in a contract year where you are, you know, in the prime of your career still. This is the opportunity. Of course, he might have a lot of longevity and we’ll see how he goes, but at 32 years old, this is your last golden opportunity for a prime contract in the prime of your career. So, having your organization completely outright bench you in the back half of a year, unless there’s a deal already in place, unless there’s something going on, you don’t really have mutual interest and stuff like that coming out. if that’s not the case. So, that’s the first thing. That’s the the part of this that I find very very interesting in terms of the mutual interest. And basically, Chris said himself, I have a lot of I have a great relationship with the Toronto Raptors. So, we’ll wait to see what’s going what conversations are going to have the summer. He said that in his postseason presser. So, that is uh or sorry, at the end of the season in in an interview. So basically we are in a very interesting spot with Chris Bucher because of course there’s expectation around the league that Chris Buchchet will be moving on to a contender like the Raptors I think will be more competitive next season. Contender is a very much a different word but there’s a lot of also reports saying he might come back. He might be back in the mix and into the squad. The one thing that you know makes this much tougher for the Toronto Raptors and indicates maybe a different trade is coming if they’re bringing back Chris Shape is the cap situation for this squad. There’s a couple factors. The first one is the cap situation because next season we see Brandon Ingram at $38 million, see Emanuel Quickley at 32, RJ Barrett at 27, Yaka Purle at 19, and the big one that’s uh, you know, going to be a major jump or uh something there is uh 38.6 million for Scotty Barnes. So that is a lot of money tied up in the top guys out there for the Toronto Raptors. And it’s a team that wasn’t super competitive last season. So, we do have a new ownership group. Kevin Keith Pia and uh you know, MLC, they’re talking about wanting to be competitive, wanting to do all these types of things. But basically, the Raptors are really treading the line with the luxury tax. And why should we care about that? I mean, Rogers, their phone bills are ridiculous. Canadian phone bills across the country are are just dumb. You know, regardless of whatever else is going on, the the phone bill industry is rough and uh they’re making a ton of bread. Why do we care about them making money? But the new rules across the NBA is that if you’re over the tax for multiple seasons in a row, then basically you get a bunch of restrictions thrown on top of you. So that includes, you know, draft picks being withheld at the extreme cases, the minimal flexibility in terms of trading for mid-level exception, different things that make it a lot tougher for you as an organization to actually make moves to improve the roster, not just, you know, ownership groups who are trying to make money, you know, do get hit with hefty penalties. So Chris Buché essentially signing him back to this team would lead the Toronto Raptors for unless you know he’s signing a minimum or something stupid like that. Chris Buchchet is going to get paid in the eight figures I’d imagine for next year and basically the Toronto Raptors do commit to that deal without other moves happening out there on the roster. The Raptors would be in that luxury tax area. So that’s where things get very very tricky with Chris Buchet because of course I want to see him back. He’s a great basketball player. would help with winning in this season that we’re so desperate to see some exciting stuff actually go down with this Raptors group. But basically the issue is right now that Chris Buchche is going to be a little bit too expensive with the current Toronto Raptors payroll in order to stay under that luxury tax mark. And basically given the state of the Toronto Raptors even though again I have no uh no qus about spending Edward Rogers money you know maybe he should give it I’m not related to him but maybe wants to give it to another media startup. you know, Edward Rogers if he’s not dumped it this way, different spots. But basically, we know that Messiah Jerry’s been pretty consistent in his uh what ownership has told him about crossing luxury tax is if we are going to be a contender, go over the luxury tax. If we’re not, don’t do it. So, that’s where the Raptors have always been. That’s the space that they’ve always played in. The Raptors right now, I think, are going to shock a lot of people next season, but it might be a little bit uh overzealous to say that they’re going to be in championship contention, but you never know. We’ll see how good Brandon Ingram is. We’ll see how Scotty takes the leap. Got a lot of solid guys on this roster and a team that over underperformed significantly last year, especially with some injuries. But yo, new look toolled roster next season. We’ll see how things shake out. But let me know what you guys think about the future of Chris Buchet with this Raptors organization. You guys, best thing. 1. I mean who didn’t see this coming. We don’t have the cap space to resign Chris, and then we have Agbaji who is a free agent at the end of next season who’s gong to be off his rookie contract and looking to get paid. This is why you keep seeing RJ’s name in trade talks. Masai doesn’t like operating with his hands tied so close to the cap.

  2. Why did we not Trade him and get something in return.. typical Masai.. lose good asset for nothing.. This is why we find ourselves in a losing Franchise Currently. Some team will get a decent player that can stretch the floor for a good price

  3. We're building a championship team around Chris.
Book it. Bet it. Believe it. Raptors in five.

I'm starting to think Chris is Bobby's weed guy.

  4. There’s a zero % chance bouchier comes back. I liked him while he was here. Good teammate by all accounts. But it’s time to move on to the new generation of raptors. Scotties raptors. Actually Scottie and IQ’s raptors. The bouchier minutes can better go to mogbo or chomche. Or most likely to either Khaman maluach or noa Essengue / Carter Bryant . So it’s over. Later Chris

  5. God, I hope rj stays. I would be sick if he gets traded from his hometown, and if he is, I hope it's to a contender

  6. What about offering Boucher a small base salary plus a large "stretch" bonus? e.g. $5M base + $15M if he achieves 40% shooting 3's?
If the bonus is deemed to be "unlikely", will that not get around the cap and luxury tax? Having a large performance-based bonus could serve as a motivational incentive.
