The ‘other guys’ in play for Sixers’ No. 3 pick: Tre Johnson, Khaman Maluach & more

[Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] Uh, today is the day we get into the other guys. We discuss the other prospects that might be there and peique your interest a bit as Sixer fans at pick number three. That is if you’re not all that fond of Ace Belly or VJ Edgecomb. That’s what we’re going to talk about here today on the PHLY Sixers podcast alongside Derek Bodner. Kyle Newbeck. I’m Devon Given, president of basketball. Ops Brie is here as always. We have a lot of players to talk about today because I’m sure there will be a variety of different names that come up this afternoon as to a player that you may prefer at pick number three. That is again someone not named Ace Bailey or VJ Edgecomb. We talk about some news and notes a little bit later as we get into those. tell you about a few other things happening at PHLY. But first, let’s start talking about some of these other prospects that have your eye as a basketball fan. And Kyle, we have a number of players as we’ve talked about. If it wasn’t number one with Flag or number two with Harper, who we discussed yesterday, it was very simple that three through however far you want to go, they all have flaws and you may like one person more so over the other, especially when it comes to fitting in with the Philadelphia 76ers. When it comes to just liking a player, if you’re just doing an overall draft guide like Derek and Will got from chlphy.com, of course, you can just rank a player who you like the most. You’ll keep an eye on that player in whatever city that he may go to, but it may not fit here in Philadelphia. So, I’ll ask you to start things off here. I don’t know. I don’t even know where you’re going to go. I don’t know if it’s CMBB. I I don’t know what it is at pick number three, but for pick number three, I I have no idea where you or Derek will go. But starting with you, man, if we’re looking at the other options, who would uh have your attention other than the other two players that we discussed or three even Dylan Harper that we’ve discussed so far? Well, as much as I’ve been a card carrying member of the uh the CMBB bandwagon for a while, even I don’t think I can be so bold as to say I’m willing to take a guy top three that I don’t know if I ever know he’s going to shoot, right? Like that’s a big I mentioned this in the Discord today. I’m not sure he clears the Kyle Nubck shooting test. And you absolutely have to clear the Kyle Newck shooting test. To be clear, I’m second on our Papa Shot ranking. So, you know, I I don’t know if CMBB can get I said shooting, not papa shot for a very significant reason. So, yeah. So, CNB not the type of guy who’s in the mix here. Um I I think this question ultimately comes down to do you want safety? Do you want just the biggest home run swing that you can take? Are you going after tools? Is it a signature skill? Like that these prospects are kind of all over the map. There isn’t one thing that really binds them all together. So, I’ll start with a guy who I think represents a massive home run swing who I don’t necessarily love, but I do think has one of the higher ceiling potentials of this group, and that’s Trey Johnson out of Texas. So, I Devon, I know you’re thrilled about this and I know I I mean, we did our big boards last week and I had them fairly low. I think somewhere at like nine or something like that. And I’ve talked plenty about all the flaws that I feel he has. I I think there’s a difference between inconsistency and not caring on defense. And I think too often Trey falls in the latter bucket. Whereas where we talk about someone like an ace or like some of these other guys, it’s not that they’re bad defenders, it’s that, you know, they just got to dial in more. And that’s thing that’s a thing you think can be coached into them or coached out of them depending on your perspective. Trey has some really problematic flaws where it’s not moving away from the ball, it’s not rebounding, it’s not playmaking as a defender, like not creating many turnovers. So like when you see the combine testing, it’s like, oh, this guy’s actually a better athlete than we expected. It almost makes it worse, right? It’s like he should have been able to get in passing lanes and do something and it’s just, you know, the the give a damn wasn’t there. Now, obviously, we circle back to conversations we’ve had Devon on the structure and what was asked of him and all that. And so, the reason that you put him into this type of conversation and say it would even be a possibility you’d consider him here is he is the best shooter in this draft or at least has the highest I think ceiling and potential as a shooter. He is already a a more realized version of some of the guys that we’re talking about as like, oh, that’s that’s the shot maker prospect, right? He took a ton of threes and he took a ton of threes that he’s launching from 30 feet. He’s taken, you know, off the dribble, falling out of bounds, guy draped all over him. one dribble pull up, two dribble out of a crossover, spot up movement shots, every single shot you could think of in what I keep saying this, it was in the toughest conference in college basketball. Not just this year, but probably the toughest conference we’ve seen for a single season in, you know, 10 years, 15 years. I’d have to go back and go year through year through all these, but to be the leading scorer in the SEC, to shoot nearly 40% on these threes on just an absolutely outstanding variety of shots and to show the polish that he has as a shooter in so many different ways. He is not a normal teenage shooting prospect, right? That normally it’s okay, he’s got this in the bag, right? He’s he’s a catch-and shoot guy. He’s a relocation guy who you think can be a movement shooter. He’s got the early stages of a pull-up game, but you got to add a butt somewhere. And I’m not sure there really is a butt with him as a a shooter. Like this is a kid who took 99 pullup threes and made like 38% of them this year and those are on an absolutely ridiculous distance and variety of shots. So, if you believe that he can be like center of your offense, driver of your offense type of player, there is a clear-cut case to take him at three because there are lots of problems on offense, right? He’s a I think he’s a better passer than the numbers show. And I think in a better offense and with better structure, that will come out. And so, I think having better teammates and, you know, not just getting to dribble the ball a lot will help him there. but he’s not a good driver. He was not very successful as a pullup two-point shooter, which if this is part of the package, you got to consider that. But he is an absolutely dynamic player beyond the arc. And pull-up shooting tends to be the very last thing that comes for these guys, right? Like when we talked about Dylan Harper on Wednesday, the whole case for him is he does everything but the pull-up shooting. He gets to the rim, he draws contact, he’s a good playmaker, he’s got an NBA frame, he does this, he does that. And then there are a lot of people who are just like, “Well, I don’t buy it because he shot, you know, 29% on pull-up threes and didn’t shoot well on pull-up twos, and I don’t like guys like that.” Well, so if you’re a pull-up shooting guy and that is the number one thing that you care about in terms of these prospects, this is your guy. He had a special special shooting season. Kyle, you you you brought it up. He took more three-pointers off the dribble in the half court than he took shots at the rim. Not three-pointers overall, more three-pointers off the dribble than he took shots at the rim. That speaks to two things. One, he’s an elite elite elite three-point shooter and just shooter in general. He’s got almost every shot in his bag. And because of the way the NBA has trended, that is a skill that you simply cannot overlook. On ball, off ball, step back. Yeah, you’d like to pull up twos to be better. I think that will come in time. Uh I have pretty good confidence in that. He’s just has elite shooting potential. He also struggles to get to the rim and he struggles to really finish at the rim. I think it was in the mid40s uh his layups, halfcourt layups. It is, you know, he is one of the tougher prospects I think to evaluate because the context that he was playing in was so bad because the skill that the elite skill he does have is so valuable, but so many of the, you know, edges around there are rough. And you know, it’s one thing we can sit here and nitpick like I think his his vision is certainly better than someone like Ace and we’ve brought that up before, but I think both his defensive potential and also his defensive engagement is so much lower than Ace. It’s really tough to project. And it’s one thing to be like, yeah, his passing is better than Ace. Almost everyone in the NBA’s passing is better than Ace. That’s one of our real big sticking points. And the more film you watch, the more that gets driven home time and time again. But is it good enough to actually matter? Like is his is passing like if I’m going to compare him to somebody like say Jeremiah Fears, another Devon guy. I think Fierce is a much better passer, much more natural playmaker and does more to leverage his driving game than Trey Johnson does. So it’s yeah, it’s better. It’s an improvement over maybe someone like Ace, but I’m not sure if it’s a meaningful improvement. I’m not sure I have a high level confidence that you can ask him to run a point or an offense. And this is where in the draft, you know, it’s one thing like I don’t care too much when you’re top you’re you’re you’re talking about drafting top three. I don’t care about fit too much because if you hit on the home run, they’re fit with like Quinton Grimes just doesn’t matter long term. We brought up the Steph Curry Monte Ellis thing. The problem is I have to actually have confidence that the upside is Steph Curry and that you can displace your current guards. And I struggle with that with Trey in a big way because like I said, the shooting I think is real. The shooting I think will uh translate maybe not day one but eventually but everything else about him I’m very very concerned. So yeah, just uh to look at the trade side of things is that yeah the scoring of course it’s it’s there. the shooting as you guys talk about um for you know all the weeks that we were discussing looking ahead to the to the possibility of the Sixers being in the lottery and keeping that pick and we started to really really just hone in on what was going on in college basketball and some of these players and I would talk about Trey Johnson and we would all sit there and just have a laugh because of how bad his defense is and and all that stuff because it’s real. It’s obviously just the offense just pops so much with what he does and u the fact that he can shoot. Derek, he’s not driving to the basket because he can shoot. He’s confident. That’s a joke, but he’s confident. He needs to get to the basket much much more, but he can shoot. With just a a level of it was it was so dry it felt like it was me making that joke. And I as someone who loves dry humor, I appreciate. No doubt. Well, to that point, Derek, I don’t know. Did you bring up the exact numbers? Because in the draft guide that you and Will put together at All City, you listed them exactly, there were 99 dribble three attempts and 109 shots at the rim total. Like that that’s a staggering number to even and that’s number close. That number’s including transition. When you break down half court, that a dribble three is higher than the shots at the outrageous. Yeah, those 83 halfcourt dribble threes and 71 halfcourt shots at the rim because a lot of a lot of his shots at the rim came in transition. Yeah. So, so again, I just I love the scoring ability. I love it. Love the fact that he did measure out at what he did at the combine because it shows that he’s a true 66 there. Has some good length. And um even the stuff that I complained about, even though as a fan of Trey Johnson at Texas was, I didn’t like how he just kind of joged sometimes and getting back on defense. If he wasn’t involved in the offense and they were running a break and he was trail man, he kind of took his time where he didn’t get back into the play. And that says something that could talk about maybe uh just is it the situation where he’s just kind of checked out which is a red flag right there or whatever it was that was just running through his mind at that point. Um but when watching and again this doesn’t tell the entire story because we did watch a lot of games from Texas. You guys have been watching a lot of highlights there as well. But seeing just looking at the things that he’s done at the combine and while that’s a small sample size of things, uh, he is doing it. If he didn’t do it, we would also talk about him not doing it. And right now, when we talk about the mid-range shooting that has to improve, I mean, Kyle Derek, even watching it, uh, the right right dribble pullup that’s really hard for a right-hander to just just do that as if it’s nothing looks so smooth with him on the right hand. Right dribble, pull up. Then he goes to the left dribble pull up and it looks so smooth again with either hand that he does it. It just seems like that should translate to the NBA once he gets once he gets comfortable in that spot in that shot. And something that we’ve always talked about the more space that he might have in the professional game than he did at the collegiate level because of the offense that they were running. the fact that he maybe didn’t have enough teammates to that to score to help him score maybe one maybe two on that team to help him score in the way that he did Kyle as you talked about in a tough conference playing in that playing against that schedule that they had and he could have been better. He should have been better but even with the stuff that he did showed us enough to be a top 10 pick and maybe even pushing himself into a top five pick. I’m well aware that he has to improve that defense and he has to improve the passing. But even watching some video from time to time, I would show Derek like look at this. Look at this pass. It’s there. He, you know, he can do it. He just has to want to do it more and trust that he can make that pass and make that pass to the teammates that he’s also going to feel like that they can get it done, that he doesn’t have to carry the shoulder uh the load of everything on the team. And that wouldn’t be the case, as we talked about with Ace Bailey or even VJ Edgecomb, that wouldn’t be the case for any of these prospects coming to this Philadelphia situation because of who’s going to be in front of them. Now, log jam wise, as far as guards go, um you guys mentioned it yesterday with the Pacers and some of the other teams. You have a lot of guards, you probably have a lot of good guards that can play basketball. And if things work out, somehow the coach has to find a way to get those guys on the floor, whoever’s rolling at that time, and figure it all out from there. But uh right now as as we just talked about this Kyle, I’m in agreement with you of course on this one that Trey would be at three. If we’re talking just strictly sticking at three, he’s certainly in the conversation of this guy is really really talented. Can it translate and would this be a good spot? As we’ve talked about before with even Ace Bailey, BJ Ashcom could probably be okay in a Washington or Charlotte situation. those two for whatever reason because of their offense, they don’t need to be in those spots. A spot here for Trey Johnson, I I think might just might work. Yeah. And so I want to circle back on I agree with Derek. When you’re in the top three, you’re you’re taking one of these picks. I I don’t worry a whole heck of a lot about fit, right? Because if the Sixers had done that, they would have never taken Joel Embiid. that would have taken a materially worse player like and that’s at the extreme end, right? Big men are a lot harder if it’s like you draft a couple of those. They just can’t play at the same time. And we’re going to talk about other bigs today. So that that’s on the extreme end. And the Sixers were rewarded for saying we don’t care if this fits who is in place. We need to go after stars and we need to get Now the flip side of that is so if we bring back someone like a VJ Edgecom, right? There are lots of people, fair or not, who are like, well, this guy just does not fit with the two guards that they have, right? That people believe he can fit with both of them individually, but in terms of being able to play all those guys together, that’s not possible. But I think that’s an important distinction, right? Because if you take VJ and VJ hits, VJ is what you expect, he at the very least, if you have to come to a decision on, hey, we’re trading McCain or we’re trading Maxi or or whatever might happen down the road, VJ still fits with whoever is left over. With Trey, if he hits, there’s a possibility he doesn’t fit with any of them and that it’s a more dramatic. So, if you’re the type of person that is concerned with fit, I think there are some more problematic things you have to consider with him where they’re just not able to get those guys on the floor together, right? And then it becomes a really crowded and not just really crowded, but like you guys know how agents are. You know how people get in people’s ears and say, “Look, you you’re producing, but you’re not getting the minutes you should.” And then so then that can trickle into the locker room that might lead to some uncomfortable stuff. So, I I don’t I think he is a more problematic fit because of the defensive stuff where I just I do not see a world where unless he makes massive strides on that and and some of it will just be strength and bulking up that the three of them have any real chance to play together. And I think that that will put pressure on the organization sooner than later in a lot of ways that you don’t really want. He definitely has to show a give a damn on defense. He has to uh something that he didn’t really do at Texas. Uh you just hope that he would in a spot like this to go out there and compete. That’s all. And we had we had we had somebody earlier bring up, you know, well the Mavs, no not the Mavs obviously can hide Luca on defense. Look, I I know you’re not making a direct onetoone comparison with Luca, but when you have somebody whose ability to, you know, really orchestrate the game and attack the rim and create opportunities for others, when you have someone who’s at an elite level like that, you’re more willing and more able to hide them on defense because you’re just you’re willing to make that concession. They provide so much value on offense that you live with a matador defense. But, you know, Trey’s rim pressure, his passing, his ability to create just isn’t at that level. So, it’s it’s one thing to take away defense. It’s another thing to take away defense and take away playmaking and take away maybe ability to get to the room in the half court. Like, when you start piling up these concerns, that’s when the defense is just it becomes a a almost unbearable uh thing that you can’t overcome. So, it’s it’s there’s always, you know, for the elite of the elite of elite, especially the hubs of the offense, you’re willing to make more concessions than you are just for somebody who’s a solid offensive player, per se. And, you know, like I said, I think Trey can be an elite shooter. Can he be an elite offensive player and an elite hub of an offense, I think he’s got some room to grow, and because you have that concern, it makes that projection a little bit tougher. All right, before we go to break, uh just but fitting him in the offense though, if we just strictly looking at the offense, uh since we do know that the catch and shoot is good, you hope the pullup dribble shooting is good, uh maybe even the transition shooting is good or overall, can you see the offense that way working where again corner threes, wing threes off the double team from somewhere else, the ball swings? You feel pretty confident that he can knock that down though? Oh yeah. I mean, frankly, my bigger my biggest concern with him offensively in this exact situation is that the head coach is not someone who’s shown to be especially creative at using offball shooters, right? Like we we talked about that a lot last year where we wanted to see, you know, more wrinkles with Paul George, get Tyrese Maxi off the ball. And there are obvious personnel reasons that they were not always able to do that, but they just weren’t a movementheavy offense for long stretches of that season. And so I don’t have concern like Trey would walk in day one and and shoot. I I don’t have any doubt that he’s going to come in the league and do anything other than put a gargantuan amount of stress on teams. I just wonder if they’re the team, the staff, and specifically with nurse to harness that and to be purposeful and deliberate about how he’s used. Or if it’s more of, hey, Trey, just kind of figure it out and be a shooting star the way he was at Texas. I don’t think it’d be that dramatically bad, but I don’t think he’s coming to a place where he’s going to be just flying off of screens and being the maybe dynamic movement threat that he could be under a more uh purposeful offensive coach. All right, let’s take a quick pause here. We’ll come back. We’ll get Derek’s candidate maybe for that number three. If it’s not Trey Johnson or even Ace Billy or VJ Edgecomb, who might it be for Derek Bodner? will tell you also about a little sale that we have going on uh to allow you to get some gear uh before uh the summer starts as we start to get into that good weather. Welcome back to the PHLY Sixers podcast here with Derek Cow, myself, and president of basketball operations, Bri. Um, those are available. Our team specific hoodies, t-shirts as well, they’re also there at all at the uh store right now. So, if you want to go check it out, take advantage of the sale, go get some merchandise so you can rep our network, rep our show as well. We would really appreciate it. That’s once again store.cityetwork.com. All right, Derek, who’s your guy? It’s not Trey Johnson. Who’s your guy? I don’t know. So, you know, we did this um you know, the other day and I have Coniple as a top five prospect. I don’t really f first of all anyone we talk about here I don’t think you can really take it free. I think if you’re going to do this you have to really heavily explore a trade down now you’re not playing the game the right way Derek. No I know that but I’m just saying I don’t really think any of these if you can trade down I think you should tomato tomato tomato power I think there’s I don’t think there’s much separation so try to get more assets in return. The problem is I think a lot of people also probably look at him say I don’t think there’s enough separation. Why should I give up assets to move up? So I think that’s going to be a little bit tough. A lot of players I do like you know Khan I think is a high floor guy. I I have faded a little bit whether um he actually has the kind of even if not star but like you know highlevel offensive upside. I’m not sure he necessarily has that. I I don’t think he creates off the dribble in terms of of setting up his own shot well enough for that. And some of those combine measurements I don’t think were unexpected, but when they confirmed our fears, you know, makes you a little bit more hesitant. And on this team where you have a a sort of bad defensive base to start with in Maxi and McCain and whatnot, I love Khan in terms of his his concepts, but adding another in there that can be exploited would be really really tough. You know, I Jeremiah Fears to me is a top five prospect. Boy, I don’t think you can put him alongside of Tyrese Maxi and Jared McCain as well. And he he measured relatively well at the combine. Probably about an inch inch and a half taller than I think we’re expecting. He’s now about 6’4 in shoes. Still only has a 6’5 wingspan. And when you’re a 6’5 wingspan guy and you weigh about a buck 75, that’s going to get picked on a lot, especially again when you’re you’re playing next to Tyrese Maxi and Jared McCain. And if I don’t think he can fit next to all three of those, well then it becomes are you good enough to displace one of those two and sort of become your your focal point on the perimeter. And I think he’s got a lot of upside, but that’s a heck of a high bar to clear if you’re going to become that kind of player and justify that pick. So to me, this is a real tough spot. And this is where if I start talking myself back into Ace Bailey, which I know we had a whole show on, it’s a large part because I just don’t necessarily trust a lot of the options here. Colin Moy Boils doesn’t pass the Kyle Newck shooting test, so he would be a tough fit even though I like him a lot. I don’t have a great answer. And I might just end up like if you force me to make a pick here, I might end up just going Khan just because I think he can retain value so that two years down the line if you feel like you have to make a major pivot or you have to, you know, add a couple of young players in to get a bigger trade. But I don’t I I truly don’t love it. I truly truly don’t love it. And it’s this is part of why, you know, it truly is it’s great that you look at this and they they got their pick and they have this optionality and flexibility and a chance to draft somebody with high upside, but it’s uh you know, I’m not sure this is a a year that fits with what the Sixers need. So, I’m going to go Khan, but I’m not going to be in love with it. Well, I mean, we talk about the shooting being much needed, of course, on this team. That’s a guy that can just bring some shooting. We sh we’ve also seen that he can put the ball on the floor and I was talking to somebody in in college hoops and they were saying how just notice how when uh when flag had went down that the offense did flow through through very good in that tournament and he was still very very good. He’s a very good player. He’s he’s just flat out very good player movement shooter catch and shoot player can create a little bit in in in the pick and roll. Has pretty good vision. helped having a 7 foot2 guy with a monstrous wings plan to throw it to with a massive catch radius, but I think he’s he has really good understanding time. He’s a really high fuel player and I like like I think a lot of people are going to look at this and and be like, well, you you’re picking them apart. We’re picking them apart as number three picks. A lot of these players, all of these players, if this was like the eighth pick in the draft, I would be really excited about. It’s just there’s some flaws, but Khan is such a high field player. Such a high field player on both ends of the floor. Like, I really mean it. When you watch him defensively at Duke, he was in the right spot every time, legitimately every time. But he’s got like a pretty much even wingspan. Guys could shoot over him and the athletic limitations are real. So, it’s, you know, I trust him. I trust him to a a super high degree. I trust his decision-making. I trust his shot. Uh, but there are are pretty massive concerns. And I mean, look, we’re we’re now at the point where with a third pick and we already crossed, you know, VJ Edgecom off. We talked about him, which we’re all pretty high on. We already crossed Ace Bailey off, which, you know, there’s a lot of upside and talent there. So, we’re talking about like a fifth through eighth draft. There’s going to be a lot of of concerns, but you really do have to pick. All right. Well, which ones do you think can, you know, improve so much that they separate themselves from the pack and it’s tough. This is a tough year for that. Yeah. And with Khan, it’s almost inverse Trey where he if you were a person who’s like, I think Khan can be, you know, like a an allstar or whatever. I I don’t believe that as his ceiling, but let’s say you’re a person who does that. He doesn’t have the pull-up shooting. That’s the thing that is the separator for him between I can be a good starter or I can be a good role player or whatever and I could be someone who you can really run offense through in a meaningful way. Now that doesn’t mean he can’t be a highle contributor obviously, right? And I think to to something Derek brought up, this is not a kid who was just like, oh, he’s a uh a Cooper Flag merchant, right? Because a lot of the time when Flag was on the bench, it was up to Khan to run the offense and lean into that partnership with Malawatch in the pick and roll. And if you look at some of those possessions where he’s in handoffs or pick and rolls with Malawatch, I think something that jumps out is like not that you need to be precise on lobs to a guy who’s 7 foot2, right? like he’s got a just enormous catch radius, but you’re struck watching the passes where it’s like he Malawatch is mid jump and the ball is just hitting where his hands already are and not where they need to get to. And so it’s just a very easy quick ball’s going in the basket. So, those are little details that like when you get to the NBA and the windows shrink and you got to make precise plays, get guys bought the ball in the shooting pocket, makes make the extra pass, like he does a lot of that stuff, right? And unlike some of these guys, we have seen him compete. We have seen him be a good defender at the previous level. But I do think obviously the the size, the athleticism concerns are very real, right? Like it there is a good chance that anybody who’s got like moderate quickness is just going to get by him at the next level. And so it doesn’t matter that he can guard up because he’s strong and has a good frame because good teams are going to say, you know what, we’re bringing you over in a ball screen. We’re going to force you to switch and we’re getting the matchup that we want. And that would be the concern of drafting him. That doesn’t matter if it’s at three. It doesn’t matter if it’s at 13. That’s the thing that he has to prove is not going to just completely undermine what he does because offensively he’s the sort of player that no matter what role you have him in, he’s finding ways to make an impact because he’s a very smart, very skilled player. A 9 foot 6 inch standing reach. When you talk about catch radius, woo, that’s one of the biggest I’ve ever seen. Yeah. Well, there’s not a lot of guys on this this uh squad that catch lives. Deona, that’s, you know, that’s pretty much it. You don’t see much. From time to time, you’ll get an Andre Drummond finish on the lob. Other than that, it’s not a lot not a lot of live throwers here, uh, or finishers for that matter. So, it would be fun for that part and knock down a couple of shots. But yeah, so let’s talk about a few other guys on the other side because there are a few more maybe some honorable mention guys that at least worthy of the conversation at pick number three. Some have been thrown in the chat from some of our our viewers and we’ll get to some super chats as well as we hang out with you on this Thursday talking about the other guys who you would check out. We’ve already talked about Trey Johnson and also discussing Khan Canipple. We’ll get to the super chats when we get back right here on the PHLY Sixers podcast. Welcome back to the PHLY Sixers podcast as we discuss some of these other players. Derek, you mentioned the Jeremiah Fears piece. even though we know the fit in the back court is not necessarily one that works out and we’ve discussed fears quite a bit but since the measurements at the combine and looking at what he does on the floor would there be any consideration from here until June 25th uh that would give you a little bit of you know what forget about it take a swing and just take the guy yeah so like I mean the the the justification for it is just upside But it’s just I think in five years this kid might be really special and in five years he’ll still only be 23 years old. Like he came into the year he started the year at 17, right? Like he was really really and I think a lot of people look at the shooting and maybe disqualify him based off of that. I don’t think that’s fair. Uh you know he was a 17year-old who was I believe he had the highest usage rate of anyone in the lottery and that includes Flag. like his usage rate was in the 30s uh for a kid who started at 17. So, I think his his efficiency was always going to take a hit because of that, especially because he didn’t have a ton of talent around him. You know, he I think weaponizes his speed and quickness and ability to get in the paint just much better than uh some of the other options, uh specifically Trey Johnson. But I think he has a chance to grow into, you know, be a plus contributor in many different facets on offense. Like I think he he’s a more natural passer. I think he’s better at attacking the rim. Uh, you know, I think I believe in that shot and I think when you believe in that shot, then I think it’s pretty easy to u buy into the rest of the offensive game. He’s will he’s willing to take contact and get the line despite the fact that he is, you know, one of the youngest players in this class and, you know, unders sized. There’s just, I think, a lot going for him. The problem is I’m not sure if he’s going to be able to get on the floor enough over the next couple of years to really showcase that value and I just don’t know if he’s going to be able to fit with either Maxi or McCain. So unless you’re really talking about blowing it up, I’m not sure he is a tenable pick here. But I do think for a team that’s just, you know, it it taking specific team needs out of it and just looking at it from like a team agnostic standpoint, saying like, “All right, they need a a a guy who has at least the capability of growing into a lead guard.” I think pretty much anyone outside of the top two should be looking at him. I think he is a a potential top five pick. I don’t know if he’s going to end up being that, but I think he has that kind of talent. of all the players with upside, I think he has fewer, you know, there’s a lot of the players with upside, you have to make massive leaps in hopes that they will improve. I think what he has to improve upon is comparatively less than a lot of the other players here. Uh, it’s just I think he’s a real tough fit on the Sixers. Devon, I’m going to give you the floor on this one because I know this is your guy. I would just say one thing. There are basically three guys in this lottery who can actually dribble. It’s Harper, it’s Fears, and it’s a big man, which is a very weird a very weird place to be in. But I I would echo it that like I love the handling, the del the despite being his size, he really invites contact and plays through contact and gets to the line. So here, floor is yours, Devon. No, wait. Are we including Danny Wolf among those players who can dribble? at seven feet if he gets drapped in the lottery, he would be one of the better ball handlers in this lottery, which is crazy to say. I am not including him, but I I do think that’s a fair shout. I think he’s more in the like, you know, like 15 to 20 range, I would guess. But I wouldn’t be shocked if he gets into the lotto. Big jump for him, by the way, for where he was projected to what he’s doing now. Um, just for me, Kyle, you just jumped right on it. I was just simply going to bring up the fact that we so much during the season talked about can they just get another guy on the floor who can dribble the basketball and clearly he can dribble the basketball. We went from obviously the three the main three of Maxi McCain and then Grimes came in but we were oh Jared Butler he can dribble the basketball and you know just a few other names that we talked about dribbling the basketball. He clearly wouldn’t come in here and start right away. So, if you were to talk yourself into it and look at the Sixers at number three with fears, it’s that he’s young. He’s going to come off the bench. He’s probably going to play somewhere between 15 20 minutes a game. And if he gets going and he has has it going with a particular group that Nick Nurse has out there on the floor, those minutes will be extended. We’ll see some of those flashes somewhere in there with it. whether it’s in the open floor, finishing strong at the rim, hitting the outside shot, breaking on defense and getting to the rim and finishing or tossing up the lob to someone like a Delona uh to uh finish a play there where you could see all of that stuff. that will be the case for it. And then as Derek pointed out is that he’ll only be what 19 in next year where you know this is this is a guy that’s going to be so young where he’s going to be put through the program of putting that weight on and and all of that where then we won’t have to worry about the likes of with all due respect Jared Butler and some of these other players that we talked ourselves into during the season and even talking about bringing them back on a one-year, two-year deal, whatever it may be. So that would be the case for it. It’s just because he’s simply talented. And Dererick always talks about regaining your value. Well, he may not play a lot to really push that value up, but by the time he’s 23, he could be forcing himself on the floor because of what he’s doing in practice in games against these uh his teammates. And they have no choice, the coaching staff, but to give him some minutes out there on the floor, even at the 64. And if they build it properly with more wings around them and obviously the center, then maybe it won’t be all that bad at 6’4. Maybe he grows another inch because he is so young where he finishes out tops out at 6’5 and the the the the Wingspan may not be may not get much better, but it doesn’t hurt if you do grow at least to 6’5 uh in that case. So that would be my case there for him. Really talented, really exciting player. He would bring a lot of juice to that building, a lot of juice to that offense. And man, him and Tyrese Maxi at least getting out in the open floor with the speed that they have. That would be fun watching defenses have to try to figure something like that out with those two guys just pushing the break. Yeah, I I would sort of echo what you said, Devon, in that I think one other thing that I really liked watching him throughout the year was despite being that young, no fear of the moment, right? There there was no question who’s getting the ball and who shot. Now, obviously for a eight at times 17 later 18-year-old that didn’t always go well because of that, but made some big time plays down the stretch of games and that’s something you always take notice of especially for a kid who’s playing in again really tough situation in conference with not a lot of help and still making it out there. So, I I really like him a lot more the more I watched him. I just the fit is really gnarly compared to some of these other guys. So, I think that’s a I’m really interested to see where he actually ends up going in this draft because I think he could turn some heads fairly quickly despite being more of a long-term guy. Um Yep. Yep. I think probably the other two that I would bring up here would be the big Yeah. Um, and we have been pretty firmly out on Malawatch as a top 10 guy when we’ve discussed him on the show. I’m still kind of in that mindset. I think for better or for worse, and I know there are lots of people who say for worse at this point, but you’re you’re stuck with Joel Embiid, like you’re you have him for at least the next couple years, more than likely, if not longer. and it’s just really hard to properly develop a guy like Malawatch when you don’t believe the two can play together. Now, that being said, if you’re just in if let’s say Daryl my is just completely lying and James Harden would probably say that he is about where Joel Embiid’s future is and what his health is like and yada yada. You could make the case that the physical tools, the flashes that we’ve seen, the defensive upside, in addition to what I think people believe is at least a reasonable shot to shoot, right? He shot something like 76 77% at the line, if I remember correctly. And you add that with outstanding rim protection. Not necessarily shot blocking. He didn’t block a ton of shots for a guy as big as he is, but outstanding rim protection makes a huge difference at the rim. Is the, you know, last man on defense for one of the best defensive teams in the country at Duke. Helps to have Cooper flag of course, but Match plays a big role in all that. He’s also an outstanding finisher, like play finisher. If you throw a lob up to him, he’s dunking it, right? I think he shot in the high 70s at the rim this year. It’s pretty easy to shoot high percentage when a lot of your shots are dunks, but it is still noteworthy that when people know that’s most of what you’re going to do, he’s still going up, throwing it down, and was a factor as an offensive rebounder as well. So, that that helps out his case quite a bit. I do not love his defensive rebounding. I do have some concerns about him defending in space, although I think he was asked to defend in space quite a bit at Duke. And I think that was a good challenge for him as a guy who’s fairly new to basketball. Um, and also, as we bring up character and whatnot with these guys, hear nothing but good things about him as a kid. Hard worker, good presence in the uh the Duke locker room, like someone you want to play with and around. Certainly the guards would love having a guy like that back there as they’re bombing away on the other end just cover up all their weaknesses. So he would be the one. And then I am higher. Although the combine was a complete disaster for him in many ways. Derek Queen is the guy who’s the offensive swing in the front court and I don’t know if he defends at the next level both because the size at center and the lack of like outlier tools to you know move in space and whatnot on defense but I think when you watch that kid on offense there is just so much in his bag right like his his ability to operate in tight spaces to get low with his handle despite being what was he 69 69 something 6ix9ine and a quarter maybe at the combine I have to double check on that but to be that size it is exactly 69 and a quarter there you go look my memory is not completely crap these days so his ability to get low with the handle and frankly just like break almost anybody down off the dribble there really is no matchup where if he gets somebody on an island I that I feel bad about for him if you get a small, he’s just going through that guy. If you get a big guy who’s too slow, he’s going around him. He’s got euro steps. He’s got counter moves. He’s got just beautiful footwork. You see the makings of the onelegged Dirk fadeaway. He busted that out quite a bit this year at Maryland. Very good defensive rebounder as well. And I bring it up every time he comes up on this show. But Derek Queen in the biggest games all year, those were mostly his biggest performances. Right. So, this is a guy who when the stakes were biggest and the lights were brightest and he’s across from whether it’s a very good team or a competition for draft positioning, he’s going out there and coming for people’s throats. So, as much as you value that, I don’t know. I tend to put some weight on that. So, I like him quite a bit, but I do think three is a little too high to take the risk there. I think he’d be someone I consider more as a a tradeback guy. Yeah, I agree. No, I mean, we’re 50 minutes into it and we got three super chats, so I don’t want to go too deep on any of those. Uh, you know, I I certainly I I Malawatch is I think the archetype of a big man that I like. You know, I do wish the if you compare his shot blocking and just, you know, event generation defensive numbers, they don’t compare to most other highlevel defenders. I think part of that is the scheme because he was able to move his feet so well. He was out on the perimeter a little bit more. If you look at the actual like shot deterrence numbers, he graded out as elite. I think he’s going to block and alter shots at the next level. I worry a little bit about the rebounding, a little bit of just the fact that I feel like I can get, like I’ve said before, 90% of that archetype at a much lesser resource. So, I wouldn’t want to spend that here. He is, like I said, unique just in the size and his mobility. Uh, so I can’t completely ignore it. Queen is, like Kyle said, immensely talented. I like the fact that you can put him in a little bit of a similar scheme with Joel Embiid, especially in a short role with Tyrese Maxi. I think he can make your perimeter players much better. Defense is a significant concern. I agree that three would be uh just too high for him. I’ I’ I’d love to sit here and completely stand for Colin my boils. Uh he can’t shoot and I have no real evidence to suggest that he will have outlier development in that regard. So I think he would be a tough spot as well. All right, let’s get to those super chats um that we talked about. Uh start off with Brian Pumper. If it’s not ace, it’s a waste. I’m sorry fellas. I can’t jump on the bandwagon of Zier Edgecomb. I’m already sick of seeing this comp. VJ I’m going to say it again for the people who have not heard. VJ Edgecomb made more threes than Zire Smith attempted at Texas Tech. Zire Smith played college power forward. He was not a guard. He was a four an undersized four. They tried to make a guard. BJ is a guard through and through. It is one of those where like you you make a comparison based only on his weaknesses and you exaggerate the weaknesses on top of that to make it sound like the player sound more ridiculous than he actually is. We’ve got Melo three points talking with the next super chat saying he remind like Ace reminds him of Ammon Bates and that’s putting going you know doing the exact same thing but with a different prospect. If you only focus on a negative and you make a comparison based on an exaggerated version of that negative, you can get to some dark places really quickly. I think that’s happening both with Zire and with Ammon Bates. Obviously, I do think what Melo is saying with Ammon is a little bit like there’s some concern there. Like when you if when your entire value is predicated on tough shotmaking and you go up a level in competition, you run the risk of not being able to make those shots at a high enough rate to continue to add value. Now, with Bates, that happened with the jump from the high school to ACC. Was it the ACC that he flamed out of Memphis? Right. And Memphis with with Bailey. He’s already made that jump. It’s just going to another level. But that concern is there for me. I don’t want to compare either Ace or Edgeome to those obvious flame outs. But I understand the concern. Derek just said, “I don’t want to compare him to the flame outs, but here’s why I think Ammon Bass is actually a fair comparison.” No, I’m just kidding. I didn’t say he’s a fair comparison. I know. I’m just saying, but I understand a concern is all I’m saying. Uh Brian Pump with another one. Man, I’m not drafting Buddy just because of his name. Negative or uh not heading into Xfinity Arena with the Sixers Khan Canipple jersey. Sorry, sir. Two things. First of all, luckily you don’t have to put the first name on the jersey. So, you only have to have the Canipple on the jersey. Second thing, don’t look up the rest of his family names. You’re a big Letter K. real real concerning uh collection of K’s. For those who don’t know, someone who has a sister with a K. So, his brothers are Kager, Kinston, Cash, and Kid, all spelled with a K. Interesting. Okay. Uh Pump with another one says, Kyle, then why does the uh commentators always sound surprised when VJ does hit an open three? Sorry, doesn’t ensure confidence. I I have watched every single three that VJ Edgecom has taken and I do not recall that being like a uh a constant thing. Maybe it’s there was a game against BYU where he went like six of eight from three and there’s a little bit of like oh man he’s cooking like that type of thing but it’s not like oh this is the first three this kid’s ever hit in his life like he’s a make a wish kid in the Big 12 or like BJ is a was not a great shooter in college but he’s got a lot of good indicators for shooters right he shot good shot Well, I should say I’m about to do the the bad grammatical things my old English teachers would kill me for. He shot well at the free throw line, but shot really well at the free throw line in high school as well. And the mechanics are, I think, repeatable and trustworthy. I don’t think he’s going to be a pullup guy, but I think as a, you know, spot up and relocation shooter, I think he’s going to be at least above average. Yeah. My my biggest concern with him is in terms of the shot, well, first of all, obviously off the dribble, like that was we mentioned it before, that was mid20s, not good enough off the dribble, pretty good off the catch. I do worry it takes him a little bit of time to get into the shot and because of that, I think he turns down shots that you would love to see him take over time. So, I think he’s got to work on his like footwork and pre-shot work a little bit to try to get make that a little faster and more compact. But, I think just pure off the catch, I think he’s going to be okay. You saw a little bit of that even at the combine, Derek. It It was not It’s not a dramatic uh wind up, but at least a little bit of one. All right, Riaz with the final super chat says, “Uh, guys, I saw a trade scenario swap of picks three and five with Utah for Markin also uh in with the salary filler. I assume that can’t happen due to the cap. Appreciate there’s no way they’re giving up marketing to move up two spots.” Yeah, Danny A would have to be the the biggest Ace Bailey fan walk in the earth. And I maybe he is, right? He A has certainly been unconventional at times before in who he values and how much. But I mean, look, I’ve been talking about trading back pretty much ever since the Sixers got third pick, just because I think there’s not a ton of separation. If you’re telling me I can get a great player to move back two spots, you can sign me up in a second. Yeah, that that’s an easy deal. Now, making the salary work on that would be a lot more complicated. Yeah. All right. So, that’ll do it for all the super chats. We appreciate it from uh Pump and Riaz uh as well. Thank you so much. And um tonight, Oklahoma City in Denver trying to close out the series for OKC. What do you guys think? Well, did you see uh Jamal Murray now questionable due to an illness going into tonight? So, I can’t tell if they’re just trying to plant the excuses so they can lay down or if he’s actually sick. But, um, that would obviously be a big loss for them because while Murray is a little bit hot and cold with Porter just he just that injury just seems like it has completely sapped his ability to shoot. And so, you you factor that in. If you take Murray out or if Murray is less than he needs to be, you would need like the Jokic game of all time to even have a chance in that game. So, I’m all eyes on Jamal Murray. Yeah. I mean, my only real thought is we mentioned this early when Denver won uh or Denver won game two. I worry that OKC’s depth eventually is going to take over the series if it gets too deep. Uh, and especially with Murray potentially out, that continues to be my concern for Denver. Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. All right. Well, let’s get ready to say uh our roll calls and and and goodbye to everybody here on this have to be an overtime roll call. He’s done in a minute. Is that’s you’re asking a lot of me to try to fly through all these names in the span of uh 60 seconds. So the people This would be our first non-overtime show though in like legitimately weeks, maybe months. We never shut up. There’s 40 seconds. You think I can get through like 25 names in 40 seconds? Not now. No. No. Maybe at 60, but not now. Uh so everybody, we are going into roll call here and we want to make sure that we say a little overtime for the roll call at allphy.com. Uh thanks on the television side on the fast channel. Head on over for the rest of the PHLY sixes podcast at allphy.com. Quickly, just uh since we are going into the roll call. Oh no, here we go. Now Devon’s got to add something else on. I got a couple that I can’t ignore that are are are the Knicks going to win game six? Are they going to push it to game seven? The Celtics. I sure hope they don’t push it to a game seven. Uh it it was nine-point lead and you you I would have thought they would have been able to hang on to that one last night and then it turned around Boston just hit all kinds of threes. Kyle mentioned before we came on that Luke Cornette looked like I don’t know Dennis Rothman out there with the rebounding and all kinds of stuff. So I hope that it is funny because I obviously don’t have the rooting interest that Devon has. So like when people talk to me about the series I like who are you rooting for? I’m like, man, I can’t stand any of those teams. And more importantly, I can’t stand any of those fan bases. But the thing I always come back to is like, Von’s my teammate. Good guy. He’d be really happy if New York won. So, I’m going to very begrudgingly root for New York. So, I hope I hope you’re all right on that one. Thank you. I’m rooting for I’m rooting for the Meteor, but while Male is still in his uh car on the way over to the arena, so you know, he’s I appreciate that, too. you know, looking out for the family first, but I gotta look out for Philadelphia, too. So, appreciate it. Got to say, thank you. Honestly, one of the weirdest playoff series in recent memory, right? The Celtics, you could argue, should have already won the series based on getting out to all these big leads. And that’s look, Knicks deserve their credit for battling back and digging deep and certainly Brunson for a lot of these big time fourth quarters, but I I just have no idea what’s going to happen that series. So, what was what was what was Boston’s biggest lead in uh in in game four, the third New York win? Was it 14 something like that? I think it was like 16, I think. 16. So, they’ve got they’ve got two 20 plus point leads blown in the 16. Wild. It’s wild. Crazy series. All right, now it’s roll call time, fell lead from front to back and close the game out. Thank you, New York. Roll call time. Thank you everyone for being here today. Lots of draft chatter and there will be a whole heck of a lot more between now and late June. Thank you to Brian Knight, to Shawn Ford, to Mary Overfield, Espie Cole, Phil W, to Val, to my girl. Nice to see you. Three point my man just with that purple heart. Riaz was a super chatter today. Yes. Yes. B Pump with a few super chats today. I think Melo also had a a super chat. Thank you to Melo on that. Bootzilla Boots hanging out. Elaine Bruno. Hello to Elaine. Zack Dean is I It appears Zach is on VJ Edgecomb Island because Zach appeared to be upset we weren’t talking about VJ. We’re on the other side of it now. Derek and I were getting killed for being too high on BJ before. Maybe that means we’re doing our jobs. Maybe it just means everybody needs to stay tuned every day to see. In all seriousness though, Zach, not only did we have the one from Tuesday, but we had one last Friday where Kyle and I ranked our big big boards. So, we have some VJ discussion in both of those. And I would say one of the things that Derek and I have talked about is VJ is my sort of player. And I think in Derek’s sort of player and what we’ve been trying to do is not overcorrect based on who we tend to prefer just because this class is so muddy and and you don’t want to just fall back on your defaults. So, like DJ a lot, but he’s got plenty of concerns as do the rest of these guys. Thank you also to Slade. Thank you to the 76 man. Thank you to X-Man. What up, X? Who else is in here today? Thank you to Briggs, who by the way, the number one Derek Queen kid fan is back. Briggs, I hear I see you. I hear you. Your presence is felt. The Queen The Queen hive is here. The Phil Ws to know if we’re going to talk a little bit more about Queen because we didn’t really talk. We have talked like listen I’ve a bunch and we’ve talked about him in the past. We have someone who just goes by the letter N. I don’t know if that means they’re working in uh MI6 with James Bond and staying undercover, but thank you for being here. Bradley McGovern up man. I believe I also need to say hello to Darkness for being here. Obviously turn the lights down Cavaliers. I think I’m out of names. James Wy here. Bucket getter 215. Thanks everybody. It’s probably the draft again, but pretty much we will see you then unless there’s some other big news or big developments. 3 PM Monday through Friday. We’ll see you tomorrow. Thanks for being here. See you. [Applause] [Music]

Tre Johnson, Khaman Maluach, and Kon Knueppel are a few of the other big names who could be wild card picks with No. 3 overall. Analyzing if Sixers will explore other options or stick with one of Ace Bailey or VJ Edgecombe.

  1. It’s killing me that you 3 are making this harder than it needs to be . Bailey or Harper is the pick, whichever one is there. Think about fultz/tatum simmons/brown…these other guys not it. Ej, can’t dribble, yea he’s athletic but come on man. We get the chance to finally have a 4 that can create off the dribble on the perimeter. I’m glad Morey don’t listen to you guys. This gotta be just for content cause this is the stupidest shit ever

  2. How many guys in the lottery can you draft that can’t shoot? Nerlens, MCW, Jah, Benjalina, and Fultz none of them could shoot. Ironically Joel and Dario were the best shooters.

  3. Bailey slightly edges Edgecomb for 3. Bailey's combine has reduced my bust concerns for Bailey. Harper if he drops to 3.

I like Khaman, but at 10 or lower so I don't know how the Sixers could get him.

  4. Emoni Bates who was drafted in the 2nd round accurately? Great comparison. Kyle and what's his name, hate everybody. Derek saves this podcast. Forgot what it was like here

  5. "I would love these guys at #8 but not at #3" is such a bullshit mindset. If 3-8 is close in value, your advantage is you get the guy you want out of that group. The Sixers gave no room to overthink this, just do the evaluations, trust your scouts/player development team, and take the best guy.
