The Raptors’ Pascal Siakam-OG Anunoby era was BEYOND saving | What could they have done differently?

Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby are both standing out for their teams in the Eastern Conference Finals, which has a lot of folks reflecting on what could have been had their stayed in Toronto, but was there any way the Raptors could have salvaged the Siakam-Anunoby version of the team? In Episode 1874, Sean Woodley and Vivek Jacob take a look back on the past few years of Raptors transactions made and not made and try to piece together an alternate version of the past that sees Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby stick it out in Toronto for the long haul. Off the top, they get into the mid-season trades of Anunoby and and Siakam during the 2023-24 season, why by the time those deals were made, there was no salvaging the team build around them, and why the returns in the deals hold up as pretty solid, if imperfect. Next, they take a look back at the Jakob Poeltl trade in 2023, and the summer of action that preceded it in 2022 that really was the point at which the core became doomed to fail. Lastly, they examine the impact that drafting Scottie Barnes had on the team’s trajectory, and why him falling into the team’s laps after the Tampa Tank season may have set the entire course of actions that led us to where we are today.

  1. Thaddeus Young and Jakob Poeltl (at the time) being your big deadline addition 2 years in a row and never making the proactive moves they used to make that would prolong the core definitely didnt help

  2. As much as I enjoyed Freddy, he was not a starting point guard that could get it done at a high level. Losing gasol hurt a lot as well. Having a big man like that was a cheat code. Floor spacer, amazing passer, amazing defender. We could go 50 years and not find another big man like that. Age and timing forced our hand into a rebuild unless we wanted prolonged mediocrity. OG is overpaid in all honesty and pascal needed a Halliburton and Myles turner to make him look as good as he does now. We just didn’t have the roster to make it work for those two to stick around.

  3. People that sit there and play this “what if” game with OG and Pascal is just doing that to push their narrative. OG asked for a trade twice in the final 2 years of his contract here. He claimed it was because he wanted a bigger role but if you look at his role with the Knicks it’s a similar role to what he had here. He just didn’t want to be here anymore and was going to walk for nothing in free agency. I at least respect him for saying trade me and not just walking. Pascal on the other hand isn’t the first option on the Pacers like he was here but if he remained here he would still be the first option and this team would still likely be out of the playoffs like they were in his last 2 seasons here. Fact is it was time to move on. Some people have this idea that it’s easy to just tell a player he’s no longer your first opinion and demote him while he’s in the prime of his career. Professional players usually don’t take that as easily as some people think. If they’re older like Lowery was it’s easier to make that move but not when they’re in the prime of their career they usually don’t take being told you’re no longer the first opinion kindly. Teams usually just trade those players because it’s going to cause locker room issues. This is why the Raptors front office has come in the media and say this is Scottie’s team even after trading for Ingram.

  4. V is looking good these days. Guy must have lost some weight or been hitting the gym or something. Shoulders are looking big bruh.
