Asa Newell Pre-Draft Workout | May 29, 2025 | Portland Trail Blazers

Uh, Asa, so uh, how would you say the workout went today? It was really good. Really competitive. I had my guy Liam McNeel here, uh, high school teammate. So, we just brought the energy, brought the fun, and it was a really good workout. Uh, how would uh, describe yourself as a player? Yeah, I’m a floor space. I can run the floor um, like a gazelle. Uh, I can knock down the three-point shot and guard on both sides of the floor. How does a gazelle run? I mean, he runs really fast up and down. Uh, limitless energy. Yes, sir. Uh, what kind of feedback have you had? Well, first of all, how many of these have you done so This is my second one. How many What kind of feedback have you gotten from teams about like what they like from you, what they think you need to work on, you know, just kind of like what have you kind of heard from teams so far? Yeah, for sure. My definitely my three-point shot. Um um and also they love how I can defend both sides of the ball. Uh how hard I work and how much energy I play with my motor. So, you were here a year ago with Hoops Summit. Kind of what’s what’s changed for you? What’s kind of developing your game and what have you kind of recognized the things you need to focus on? Yeah, I’m definitely stronger from a year ago. Uh, you know, it’s very familiar, uh, atmosphere for me, uh, playing a Nike Hoop Summit game. But, you know, it’s just really fine fine-tuning a lot of the details. Um, just being consistent, you know, every single day on my shot mechanics and, um, you know, my work ethic. Have you given much thought to this Blazers roster and how you’d fit in? Yeah, for sure. I mean, you know, they like to, uh, run the pace a lot. Um, you know, with schooled and, uh, clinging, he’s, you know, he cleans up anything down low. So, I think that um I could be a plug-and-play player. What led to your decision to to declare it and and come to the draft? Yeah, I mean that was my whole focus uh going in being a one and done player, God willing. Um and you know, the pieces of the puzzle fit. So, I just thought, you know, God led me here and so I’m going to continue to take his path. Is this fun, excuse me, is this process fun or stressful for you? I mean, I wouldn’t say it’s stressful. It’s definitely excitement. Uh you know, you’re being around people and players that you never been around before and you’re you’re living out your dream. So, it’s just a bunch excitement. It’s fun. Uh, you know, you can’t stress on it too much or, you know, you you’re going to fall fall into a a dark spot. Talk about a little bit, but what do you think are your most kind of NBA skills as of right now? I think my frame. Um, I’m getting stronger every single day in the weight room and just my athletic ability, you know, on both sides of the ball, being able to run the rim and run the floor and, uh, you know, run the three-point line a little bit. And um I just think that my overall uh frame can you know fill out you know develop develop being in the league and you know the NBA is a development league so that’s what I’m here for. Talked about it being a fun workout kind of what was the the intensity like of the workout. Yeah I mean we played a we comp uh competed a lot threeon three a bunch of closeout drills and those those days are the best days. What do you hope uh uh teams take away, you know, when you go through these workouts and you leave? What is the one thing you hope that lasting impression that you leave on a team? Yeah, just my character, how I’m encouraging my teammates and also just, you know, the contagious energy that I bring cuz I, you know, I want an atmosphere that’s uplifting somewhere that doesn’t feel, you know, too forced. It just feels like it’s flowing and um yeah, just just that aspect of it. Do you have any more workouts scheduled? Yes, sir. Yeah. Do you would you share like where you’re going next? Yeah, I’m going Chicago next. Yep.
