They Should’ve NEVER Let The Mavericks Get Cooper Flagg…

I don’t think you would have believed me if I came up to you and told you that the Dallas Mavericks were going to get the first pick in the NBA draft. And well, now the unthinkable is happening and the Mavericks are going to get their hands on Cooper Flag. So, you may be asking, how are the Mavericks going to look like next season? And how will Cooper Flag be implemented in this roster to win a possible championship next season? At first glance, when you look at Cooper Flag’s highlights, you may think that scoring is his greatest strength. He’s a flatout scorer. He will get to his spots, knock down mid-range shots, knock down three-pointers. But you’re wrong. That’s not his greatest strength. His actual strength is playing defense. But Cooper Flag isn’t your ordinary defender. He plays defense in a very unique way because Duke would often sit Cooper Flag inside of the paint and this acted like a safety net. So when someone gets beat in the perimeter, Cooper Flag is right there to help out and block the shot away. And Cooper Flag is also a very smart player. He could do what we call shadowing the defender. And this is when you hide behind your teammate so the opponent can’t see you. They think they’re going to beat one player, but in reality, when they turn around, you’re there to block the shot away. This is what’s going to make the Mavericks very scary next season. You have multiple rim protectors and Daniel Gaffford, Derek Lively, Anthony Davis, and now Cooper Flag. So, if you’re ever going to try to go to the paint, there’s a good chance that you’re going to get blocked. Another reason why Cooper Flag is such a great defender is because he could also guard the perimeter. Him being 6’9 with a long wingspan means that there is never a mismatch on the perimeter. And over here, Syracuse thought that he was a mismatch. They isolated him in the perimeter. And well, little do they know that when you go up for your shot, Cooper Flag can move his feet and extend his wingspan to deny the shot. And this long wingspan really helps when you’re playing defense. Sometimes you could get hit very hard by screens and your wingspan allows you to recover, jump forward and block the shot even after being hit by a screen. So ladies and gentlemen, in the modern NBA, you always need a defender to help impact your team. That’s why I have no problems with Cooper Flag being implemented in this Mavs roster. He could fit in like a glove. But I asked myself a question, does Cooper Flag have any weaknesses? I watched the film. I looked at the numbers. And after I saw this graphic, it showed me that he has absolutely no weaknesses to his game. And when I look at this graphic more in depth, you could see that two of his four top strengths are defensive stats. So now you know Cooper Flag is a very elite defender. But one thing you may also not know is that he is an elite playmaker and he displayed it in a sweet 16 game against Arizona where he had seven assists with only one turnover. And this is because he is so good when players double team him over here. After Cooper Flag gets a screen, both defenders go to double him. And usually players don’t know what to do when this happens. But instead, Cooper Flag throws it between two defenders. And after you beat a double team, there’s almost always going to be someone wide open. And this is the player in the corner. Cooper finds him for the bucket. As you guys know, Cooper Flag is going to be playing alongside Anthony Davis, who is a very serious lob threat. Even Derek Lively, very serious lob threat. So, when you play with these lob threats, you’re going to have to know how to pass it to them. But this is no problem for Cooper Flag because when he grabs the ball on the right wing, he could penetrate inside the paint. And when the defender in the paint’s playing a bit too high, this is when you throw the lob and he throws a perfect pass for a perfect dunk. And just look at plays like these where Cooper Flag is fumbling the ball. He just throws it up to his big man for a lob. Imagine throwing that up to a player like Derek Lively or Anthony Davis. It’s going to get scary in Dallas, guys. But what’s the Maverick’s plan with Cooper Flag? Well, their assistant GM gave us an inside scoop on how they’re going to plan on developing Cooper like before this draft lottery that we had a good enough team to win the championship. And now we get the chance to add the number one pick to this. So, we’re we’re ecstatic for that. But, it’s it’s business as usual for us. and whoever we get, which the kid from Duke, as you’ve mentioned, um you’re you’re bringing in someone that’s won everywhere he’s he’s been, who’s played above his age, everywhere he’s been, um who’s going to walk in and be ready to go. And whatever that role will be, we we see it as more of another thing. We get to bring these guys, the the 21-year-olds, the 22y olds that we have on this roster around slowly through the veterans that we have on this team. So, when those guys are done playing, I think it’ll be way more than three years. I’m hoping it’s five, six, seven years when they decide to hang it up. Some of our older veterans, but when they’re done, they’re passing the torch and they’ve shown these guys how to become NBA champions, how to win, and then that window is, you know, uh, uh, extended. So, after hearing the Dallas Mavericks GM talk about their plan with Cooper Flag, I kind of agree with it. The basic thing is using players like Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson, and Kyrie Irving as your mentors to help develop Cooper Flag. These are probably three of the best players you could be mentored by. And the thing that I’m still yet to talk about is Cooper Flag scoring. And obviously, when you have players like Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, hopefully coming back healthy, you’re going to have to play off the ball. So, we have to understand how Cooper Flag plays without the ball in his hands. over here. He has the ball in the right wing and the first thing he does is hit you with a pump fake because he has the three-point threat. That’s what’s so good about having him off the ball. He can shoot the three. So, all he has to do is hit you with a pump fake and run right by you to have an explosive dunk. A good thing about being a player that could dunk the ball and play explosive is that you could be used as a screen setter off the ball. So then you could get easier buckets at the rim. Now, just imagine if Cooper Flag is setting a screen for Kyrie Irving. You’re gonna have to worry about Kyrie lifting up from the three-pointer, and then you’re gonna have to worry about Cooper Flag dunking the ball down or popping out for a three. Another reason why Cooper Flag is so good off the ball is because he is a very lethal three-point shooter. In fact, in the 37 games he played with Duke, he shot the three-pointer at a 38.5% clip. So, what this allows you to do is set a lot of offball plays for Cooper Flag, setting him screens to get off of those and knock down three-pointers. And when you’re playing with the Dallas Mavericks, you have a lot of good shooters around you, especially Klay Thompson. So, this means that you’re going to get a lot more wide open looks than the ones that Cooper was getting in college. So, the real question is, how will the Dallas Mavericks starting lineup look next season? There are multiple options you could go with. The first one is Kyrie at point guard, Klay at the shooting guard position, Cooper Flag playing small forward, PJ Washington power forward, and Anthony Davis playing the center. But I really don’t think that this is going to happen because when I watched a recent podcast, Anthony Davis had a different haircut. And when he has this haircut, he usually plays power forward. But there has been multiple times where Anthony Davis said that he doesn’t want to play the center position. So knowing this, I think that they play Kyrie Irving at point guard, Klay Thompson at shooting guard, Cooper Flag at small forward, Anthony Davis at power forward, and Derek Lively playing the center position so he could finally blossom and get way more minutes as a starter. This is why the Mavericks are so scary. You’re going to have a player like PJ Washington, who is a starting caliber player, coming off your bench, and now you have a player like Cooper Flag, who is so young. And there was a quote that was very interesting to me. They said that Cooper Flag isn’t quite at the Victor Wanyyama level, but he belongs in the Anthony Davis tier. And well, it isn’t so bad being in the Anthony Davis tier. I’ll catch you guys in the next

  1. swap AD for KD+picks and they'll go straight to finals. Mavs doesn't need a center who doesn't want to play center.

  2. The moment I heard the Mavs were in the draft lottery I expected them to “win”. They traded Luka for him. Act like u know!

  3. LMAO….”possible championship “? They got blown out by Memphis a game before Memphis lost by 50. He’s taking PJ Washington’s spot (their best defender), so it’s a minor upgrade that is unlikely to even be an improvement for the first couple years until he adjusts.

And scorer? He was the 39th ranked scorer in college with the 65th best shooting percentage. Just stop….

  4. “The nba rigged it to make the mavs get flagg” so the nba made sure basically every player on our roster get hurt including kyrie tearing his acl? If that doesn’t happen Mavs make the playoffs lol

  5. The conspiracy theorists are definitely a type. The NBA is a legal business worth $100 billion, with investors and competing billionaires, each with lawyers on lawyers. To rig something so important… It's a lottery.

  6. why do y’all make any kind of negative out of this? It’s just gonna be the scariest team that y’allseen in a long time? There’s no bad situation in this? If he is as good as he’s projected to be, it’s gonna be scary and his talent is gonna speak for itself.
