Sixers Interested In SNEAKY Overseas Prospect + Kelly Oubre HINTS At Returning! 76ers News & Rumors
On today’s show, the Philadelphia 76ers reportedly interested in signing this sneaky overseas prospect, Kelly Ubé Jr. hinting on his Instagram that he wants to return to the 76ers this off season. Plus, with the NBA Finals starting on Thursday, a former Sixer is guaranteed to win their first ring. Speaking of the NBA Finals beginning this Thursday, who you got? Oklahoma City Thunder, Indiana Pacers. Should be a fun one. Both, you know, young teams like to get up and down. Should be exciting. I’m rocking with the Pacers in this one. But let me know who you got. OKC for the Thunder or ND for the Pacers. My name is Jake Chipper. Thank you so much for tuning in to today’s 76ers. Now, a loaded show to get to here today. And we’re going to start with an interesting piece of news that came across my timeline just the other day. Philly Sixers Galaxy on Twitter passing along this report from international reporter Chemma de Lucas. Good job, Philly Sixers Galaxy on the translation here. The Sixers are interested in offering a two-way contract to Yanick Crog. I hope I’m pronouncing that right. who has one year left on his contract with Juventto Balona of Lia ACB. Krag, a 22-year-old 68 forward, averaged a career-high 6 and a half points per game through his 52 games played last season. You might look at that, the careerhigh 6 and a half points and might not be too impressed. You’re probably thinking, ah, this is kind of a whatever signing and sure it might just be a low-level two-way that they’re interested in. But he’s actually kind of interesting as we dive in a little bit here on Crag. Spent six seasons in Liga ACB and League ACB over in Spain. This isn’t just some like bum league where he’s playing against you a bunch against a bunch of guys that are never going to see the NBA floor. This is the highest level really of competition over there in Spain. It’s a league that Luca Donuch played in as well. So there is some competition over there. So he’s not just playing against absolute bumps. He’s getting some good run against some good talent. Now, Craig actually declared for the 2024 NBA draft just last year. Did go undrafted though as a result returned to Spain this past season where again he had a career year. Does have one year left on his contract. So, could run into some complications there if you want to bring him over this season, but I’m sure similar to what happened with the Abbecelli last year, there’s a way you can buy that out and get him over to the NBA if he does want to go that route. And a little bit more here on Krog as a player. Very, very interesting as you know, still a young kid at 22 years old with that height at 6’8. He’s very long. He’s very lanky. He’s got a big wingspan, right? Little more thin on the frame. One of those typical like young, not fully developed, taller wings, but he is a great athlete, as I mentioned, with that great length. He really excels in transition. And I was actually watching some of his highlights before talking about him and man in the open court he really runs the floor hard and that’s where he gets a lot of his work done on the offensive end because the rest of his offensive game very much still a work in progress. The jump shot honestly looks pretty decent but just not a whole lot of consistent results there. He is a very very solid defender, but just again a lack of offensive impact. But when you look at this kind of player, a potential 3 and D wing who’s still very young, who drew a little bit of NBA interest last season, talking about signing him to a two-way deal, like it’s it’s pretty low risk and somewhat high reward, I would say. Not that Biscuit has like some all NBA type level ceiling, but if you just watch some of his highlights and watch him play, like he really does move very, very well. He was making some smart cuts off the ball toward the basket. Clearly just not very comfortable doing a whole lot of else offensively, but looks to be a very good defender already at that young age. So, look, you want to bring a guy like this in for a two-way deal over somebody like a Jeff Dowin who’s just been sitting here taking up a two-way spot or a Jaylen Hood Shafino, I’ll very gladly take someone like Krog over here as Sixers are, you know, doing their due diligence with this international scouting. obviously getting Yabaselli last year, now potentially getting Krag heading into next season. Let’s get to Kelly Uber here. UB, as we know, could be a free agent this off seasonason, does have an $ 8.4 million player option he will have to decide on in the coming month at the end of June. So, will he be back? Could he explore the open market? Will the Sixers want to resign him to a longer deal or will he just accept that player option? Well, Kelly Ubé on his Instagram story just the other day posted this image. Mood AF, need more of this, a picture of him and Embiid that this was when they had that kind of little weird back and forth during the game that people thought and try to stir up controversy over. I think this post is really just him saying like, I miss playing meaningful basketball when you’re in the heat of battle with your brothers out there. Obviously, the Sixers this year didn’t play a lot of meaningful basketball, and I think he’s saying like, “Man, I want to get back out there in those high lever moments playing with my guys.” To me, it’s clear Ubé wants to be back. Not just because of this one post he made on his Instagram story, but you go back to what Kelly Ubé said at the end of the season in the team’s exit interviews. He pretty much said, “Yeah, I want to be back.” This is what he said back in April. I’m a Philadelphia 76er. I’m blessed to be a part of this organization. I’m here in front of you guys right now, so I’m taking it day by day. Also, this is a business. At the end of the day, I’m happy. Feel like I like to finish what I start and I don’t feel complete. So, Godspeed. And yeah, I’m still here. Makes sense. He wants me back. He said before Philadelphia is really the place that he fell back in love with basketball after some rough seasons, you know, with the Hornets, with the Warriors. He came to Philadelphia and really became a fan favorite. Someone who plays hard and plays tough at all times. Now, should the Sixers want Kelly Ubé back on that $ 8.4 million player option? Look, his two seasons in Philly, there’s been certainly mixed results. He’s kind of always been the same player, right? And and I don’t think he’s going to really deviate much from the guy he is now, which is, you know, a guy who will give you solid contributions on the offensive end. He’ll be able to get to the rim a little bit. a knockdown, the occasional open shot, but the efficiencies, especially from three, just not what you want to see out of a guy who ideally like would be a part of your starting rotation. But come playoff time, you just can’t have someone out there who’s shooting under 30% from three as he did this past season. And look, he’ll give you some good defense, although I think the defense is honestly a little bit overrated just because he plays so hard and a lot of the plays he makes are in big moments, which you do like to see, but just kind of an inconsistent player. Although I do understand like he has become a fan favorite and he definitely does fit the city of Philadelphia very very well. So when you talk about potentially bringing UB back, there are really a couple of different ways this could go. One, UB could accept that player option at $8.4 million and hope to reup on a bigger contract heading into next off season. He also could decide to decline that player option and resign with Philadelphia on a larger deal. Philly can sign him to a 4-year 62.6 $.6 million contract, but that gets a little tough with the Sixers cap situation. You could also decide to just test the open market and see if there’s a team out there willing to give him, you know, that non- taxpayer mid-level exception around $14 million, similar to what Philadelphia can resign him with with their uh cap space here as well. But testing the open market is definitely a little more risky as not a whole lot of teams are going to have that much money to spend. And we’ve seen a lot of role players have to settle for less money than you might expect because of the new cap rules and the apron rules and all that. You also got to factor with Philadelphia and bringing back UB. What happens with Quinton Grimes and Gresian Yabaselli? We talk about this all the time. The Sixers cab situation is so interesting because they’re already right up at that luxury tax number with Ubé Grimes and Yabasellle to resside. And look, if they use that middle of exception to bring back Yoselle, then they get stuck hardcapped at that second apron. And if Grimes gets a ton of money in restricted free agency, you might not have enough money to sign somebody like Ubé to a bigger deal depending on how you prioritize these different kind of guys. I’ll say this, I wouldn’t want to lose Kelly Ubé for absolutely nothing. I think he’s a decent enough player where maybe you can find a team if they do want to sign him in for free for free for free for free for free for free for free for free for free for free agency to do some kind of sign and trade. Maybe you attach Andre Drummond. We’ve talked about that a lot. Sending those two guys in a package to get another player. I would, I think, at the end of the day like to see Kelly Ubé back. I don’t know if I’d want to see him back as a starter for this team. Again, that lack of an outside shot and how inconsistent he is there. It’s just kind of who he is and it’s kind of worrisome come playoff time, but he does a lot of other little things well. So, on a decent deal, ideally for me, I think he accepts a player option and then maybe next off season you revisit all of this, but we will see. Certainly sounds like UB wants me back, and I bet the Sixers do want UB back as well, but plenty of financial decisions to weigh as they head into this off seasonason. What say you? Do you want Kelly Ubé back on the Sixers? Simple yes or no question here for you guys. Give me a Y3 yes. Give me an N for no. Let me know if you want UB back in Philadelphia in 2025 2026. All right, NBA Finals getting going this week. And whether it’s the Oklahoma City Thunder or the Indiana Pacers that win, a former Sixer is guaranteed to win a championship. And pretty notable former Sixers in that regard as well. Of course, for Indiana, our guy TJ McConnell with the Pacers, was in the Sixers from 2015 through 2019. Really in the beginning, early stages of the whole trusted process era and all of that. He was an absolutely electric player to watch when obviously this team wasn’t winning a whole lot of games. But even as they started to get a little bit better towards 2017, 2018, and 2019, he was still a pretty good player for Philadelphia. Had some electric moments. I’m, you know, thinking about that game winner he had against the Knicks right over Carmelo Anthony when Joel Embiid came up and basically choked out TJ McConnell. Just a very, very fun player to watch and he’s carved out a very good role as the backup point guard for Indiana. just a pest to have to play against and and played very well against the Knicks in the conference finals. Also little under the radar, Tony Bradley, center for the Pacers, who’s gotten some run as well in this postseason. Played a decent bit against the New York Knicks in that conference finals. Played just a little bit for the Sixers in that 2020 to 2021 season. But another guy who I remember he had a good stretch with Philly in that time and Joel Embiid tweeted out, “I’ve seen enough time to build around Tony Bradley.” Unbelievable. Maybe they should have built around Tony Bradley instead of Joel Embiid with that health. I I don’t know. We’ll see what happens with that. Maybe he could win a ring. And then for the Thunder, Isaiah Joe. Man, I just wish the Sixers never let go of Isaiah Joe. You know, Daryl my said, it kind of just is what it is after they released him. Like, we have to cut good players. I can’t just only sign bad players. If we sign a lot of good guys, we can only keep so many. I think they should have kept Isaiah Joe. They just cut him. They let him go for nothing after a couple good years. and now he’s been with OKC and not, you know, a super mainstay of the rotation, but does play spot minutes here and there and obviously a very good three-point shooter. So, it’s going to be really cool to see one of these former Sixers winning their first NBA titles. Also, it’s the Paula George finals we got going on right here between OKC and Indiana. Both of these teams kind of able to reset their organizations and what their teams looked like by trading away Paul George. And now the Sixers are stuck with him and they’re not going to be able to do the same thing. I’ll tell you that. Although, wouldn’t it be funny if they find a way to trade Paul George and they’re back in the finals? That would be something to talk about when it comes to Paula George’s legacy. But again, just funny that we got the Paula George finals here. Also want to give a shout out to uh Sam Pressie. Just what a job he’s done with OKC and building up these assets over the years. is it’s very very similar and reminiscent of what Sam Hanky was trying to do in Philadelphia when he really did start the whole trust the process thing back in you know 2012 2013 around then loading up on draft assets and young players and really embracing that tank and kind of starting that whole wave in the NBA. Of course didn’t get to see out his vision because the NBA didn’t like what he was doing and force him out. Made the Sixers hire the Kangelos and that just ruined the entire Sixers organization from that point on. But Sam Hickeyi was never able to see out what he was trying to build with that Sixers team. And I think it would have worked eventually in the ways that it’s working for Sam Pressie and the Oklahoma City Thunder. Of course, we see how loaded they are with young talent now and with so many draft picks over the next few years. So, what could have been for Philadelphia? Maybe they could have been like the Oklahoma City Thunder of today. Who do you think’s going to get a ring this year? It’s gonna be one of these two. Either Isaiah Joe or T.J. McConnell. Let me know down in the comments section. And as always, do not forget to hit that sub button. [Music]

If the Sixers evaluated talent better, the Hinkie plan would have worked like it has for OKC.
Of course we definitely need Oubre back. He can score the basketball 🏀 and defend on defense. 😎💪🏾
