I am a little bit confused why you Kevin and Mark Stein did not join the memo of t-shirts that me and Bobby sent out to the group chat. Earth tones neutrals or the question could be why didn’t you join me and Mark Stein in the colors that we decided to choose for today’s show. Mark Stein has a white t-shirt on. Who would win two on two? Me and Tim Ko or KG and Mark Stein win at what? Two lefties. Oh wow. Shout out to the two lefties over here. I played I played basketball last night and I have never hurt more. You a little sore. Not a flex. You a pickup game last night. How many did you score? Uh played three games. One basket. Uh three threes, two three four twos. So do the math for that. Nine nine uh eight. Yeah. Like 17 points over three games. 17 points over three games. So, you a little more than five points per game. I’m not saying it looked pretty. And trust me, the level of shape I’m in right now, it did not look pretty, but yes, I scored a appropriate amount for Thank you, Juan Martinez. Shout out to Juan Martinez. They picked me and Stein. Shout out to you, Juan. Scored a an acceptable amount. I would dunk on. I agree with Elliotman. We’re on the same team. Bobby, we just went over this. Elliot says I would dunk. Sarah’s here, too. Not that I would. Elliot says that Elliot would dunk. They would dunk on you, KO. Bobby Krill, what’s going on? Uh, dude, it’s been a morning. I’m What happened? You just I I don’t want to talk about it. All right. Everything is fine. I’m happy to be here with all of you. Uh, with my favorite guys. That’s right. Covering your the team. The team. Covering a basketball team. Your favorite pickup players. That’s right. Your favorite pickup basketball players. Mark Stein with his two phones and computer. What’s going on? Um, mic in the microphone. Um, don’t I shout loud enough that it doesn’t matter? What’s your device time like this time of year? A lot. Uh, oh, I would love to see like your weekly screen report on your phone to see what it is on your iPhone. Have to. But like the next month of your life, what’s it look like? What’s it like being a being an NBA insider? A national NBA insider. Yeah. When the calendar turns to June. Yeah. It is I mean on one hand it’s it’s great that like people reach out to you too. It’s not just a one-way street because there is so much interest in information that you know the phone does ring. But there’s also I would say this is probably the number one time of year for misinformation. So stuff you hear really has to be vetted and checked because it just I’ve never been a huge draft person. So that’s like I always say that you know my I spent 15 years at ESPN. One of the greatest parts about that was ESPN has always had like dedicated reporters who only cover the draft and that’s the way you have to do it. I think the draft has become a 24/7 365 gig unto itself. And so I’ve always, even around draft time, I’ve always focused on the larger transactions involving established players that teams are working on in conjunction with the draft. I’ve tried to make that my focus because like I I can’t be Raphael Barlo and I I don’t study these guys all year long like a true draft expert does. But that was one of the things that I was really excited about Jake Fischer joining me as a twice a week contributor because Jake, he’s much more of a draft nick than me and so he brings a lot of draft chatter to the table. But um it’s a good thing Mavs got the number one pick then. Yeah, it’s easy for this. It’s like this is such a unique experience. I obviously was not covering the Dallas Mavericks in 1981 when they got the number one pick and and selected Mark Aguire. That was obviously pre-law. I’ve never, you know, I’ve never lived in a city where the teams had the number one pick. So, it is that does. Now, the sunshine’s just a little brighter. Yeah. Whenever that’s the case. Well, today I have to say that the weather is quite passable today. So, that was as I walked into the studio that did make me happy. It is. Well, let’s get into it because there’s going to be a lot of storylines this NBA offseason that we’re going to be following. What’s the number one Mavericks or NBA offseason storyline that you’re going to be following? plenty to choose from whether it be Kyrie Irving’s contract obviously what the Mavs are going to do in terms of free agency what does the KD Giannis situation look like for Phoenix and Milwaukee respectively could there be a summer of chaos Tim Ko looming given the situations that teams find themselves in not a lot of teams with cap space so we could be seeing a lot of movement when it comes to trades Tim Ko is a lob threat we’re going to have to start drug testing chat goers are you implying that chat may not always be truthful. I have never doubted anything that one of our beloved esteemed commenters has ever put in there because I don’t think that our fans, our supporters, our friends wouldn’t be would be dishonest to us. Let’s be honest, you’re not a lob threat on the Papa Shot in the hallway. Golly, man, you want to try that out? I don’t know if Papa would would approve of what I You could cut the tension with a knife, man. All right. Do we need to leave for a second? Do y’all need to go ahead Tim? Should we have Abby film that? Oh jeez. I’m I’m I am I am happy to do it. Uh Boston Celtics. I’m very curious what they do. Uh I am picking them because we are officially entering the era where the collective bargaining agreement and the cap restrictions of the second apron uh as voted upon by the players association by the owners. This is what the NBA wants. This is what Adam Silver wants. and the first super team, the first champion, the first genuine uh roster built that, you know, not only could be a title contender, but won a title very famously last year, less than a year ago. Uh they’re going to be victim to it. This is this wouldn’t be my number one, but speaking to your point, I really hope when Adam Silver has his press conference at the finals that someone actually asked that, Adam, is this what you guys really wanted? Like, this is what you wanted, isn’t it? We you wanted you wanted seven different champions in seven years, right? I mean, that’s he’s he’s not going to answer it, but I I do hope somebody asks. Yeah, 100%. I mean, this this is this is the you know, there are there are a million different storylines in the NBA. Uh there are a dozen storylines that would have been acceptable answers. Sure. Uh, I chose a storyline, yes, the Boston Celtics, but really what I’m choosing, and you can make the argument, you could correctly make an argument that Minnesota trading Carl Anthony Towns was the first move that was an apron move, a salary cap move, a CBA move, but in the light of both of that team, you know, Minnesota getting to the conference finals, the New York Knicks getting to the conference finals, uh, I’m now eyes trained on Boston and what they have to do. and what Boston does does not change the dynamics of, you know, of of the collective bargain. I don’t think we’re going to learn anything from it, but I I just think it’s very interesting how much they have to feel to do uh how much they feel they have to do to make sure they’re under the second apron and they’re a team that, you know, is not penalized basically every single day for fielding a team that is really good because that that that’s the point of the NBA we’re at. uh you get punished if you’re too good. The the number one answer is not Boston, which would have been my answer if I would have answered this question last and no one had said it, but the real number one answer uh Giannis, how often does maybe the best player or the second or third best player or fourth, whatever in the league change teams? It’s not very often. Uh it just happened once earlier this year. Will Lightning strike twice? um your Bucks uh with my Bucks uh that I was correct about how that happened. I was correct. The record show Carella was uh I was so right. You were early and I said the Bucks are not going to be good this year. That’s right. And I said became you meant it or was that No, I was being meant or was that just Charlie? I was being completely serious. I said they and I literally Oh my god, they ended with 48 wins. Tanner, you can go back and find footage of me saying the Bucks are going to end up winning 48 games and everyone’s gonna think they’re fine, but don’t worry, they’re not. They’re terrible. Can you pull that up, Tanner, right now? I can I can um vouch for him saying they hate That’s not even a frosty cold take. Uh if Giannis if Giannis does get traded, if if the Bucks do make that move, um the conference that he goes to is either going to get way harder if he comes to the West or at least not make the West as impossible if he stays east. And if he stays east, is it going to be a team that reportedly wants a superstar like Toronto that isn’t quite at that level yet or is it going to be to a team like the Knicks somehow that everyone is saying the Knicks are going to go trade for Giannis or whatever? Like cuz that shifts the balance of power in the league. So, that is the big thing I’m watching and hopefully if it does happen or doesn’t happen that drama is resolved as soon and as early as possible because I feel like the rest of the league is going to be on hold until that thing resolves and I don’t want it to just be a gridlock for a month and a half. But, but your answer would have been Boston if I hadn’t said it. My answer would have been Boston because I was assuming that that you would have said Giannis. So, we’re not only matching t-shirts, you’re matching thoughts for the same reason as how often do you see a top five player change teams? How often do you see a top five team blow it up? Like the last time that a champion blew it up was the Mavs. That was 15 years ago. Uh Boston won the title last year and they might trade one or two of their starting lineup or three of them this summer. Like that never happens. Also, all the if if you’re looking for surprising player movement that happens because of third and fourth teams getting involved. I think Boston’s the likeliest outcome here. You know, it could be it could be Giannis, could be Milwaukee, but I could see whatever deal Boston does get real funky and real weird. Mark, it does feel like the summer of 2019 when it felt like the rest of the NBA was just waiting on Kawhi Leonard’s decision on where he was going to go. Of course, he wound up going to the Clippers. It feels a lot like that when it comes to Giannis. Maybe in some ways uh with Kevin Durant and his situation uh in Phoenix. what’s on your radar when it comes to uh the biggest story lines that you’re keeping your eye on peing your interest going into this offseason? Well, first I got to say I was so wrapped up in my many devices when the show started that I did not realize the extent to which your shirts are from the same closet. Not not only looking like you’re a twoon two NBA jam squad, but they’re even matt they even match the chairs. Like what is Oh man, I really do blend in. What diligence? What diligence from you guys? I I’m with the Carllis straighter. Giannis is the story, but since we’ve already had nominations for the Celtics and the Bucks future, the Suns situation is also fascinating because I reported this over the weekend during this coaching process, which is still ongoing. They’re down now to two finalists who were meeting face tof face with Matt Ishbia, the Sun’s owner. You know, it emerged as part of the coach search process that the impression was definitely left that the Suns are moving on from Kevin Durant. And on one hand, it is hung up somewhat by the Giannis situation. We still don’t know does Giannis want to stay or want to go. Like we still don’t have that clarity. So that’s kind of why there is this log jam that the league has to deal with. But the expectation is that Durant is going to go back on the trade market this off season. The difference this time is the Suns would be doing it in collaboration with Durant and his business manager Rich Kimman instead of just unilaterally unilaterally looking for trades like the Suns were in February. And it basically was Durant who went to the Suns and said don’t trade me. I don’t want to go somewhere mid-season. But that I mean yeah what’s going to happen with Giannis? What’s going to happen with Durant? What are the Celtics going to do to cut payroll when they need to? What are the Knicks going to do because Bridges is due for this sizable extension? And they just traded 80 first round picks for them. That’s right. I mean, four more first than were involved in a trade in February. It’s all good, man. Everything is totally fine and awesome. Also, Bridges Juan says that Mark, you know the answer. I know the answer to what, Juan. I’m assuming that’s probably about KD what or Giannis. Please clarify all of them. I would love all the answers to all the offseason questions. Bridges uh Bridges is not repped by CAA. Correct. I don’t know if that makes any difference. Sorry. I do not remember. I’m I’m prepping for the ad. Right. Anyway, well, he thought he was being real just inconspicuous getting himself ready for Oh, let’s try to be professional. We can just get to that. Yeah, let’s get to that. Uh, we’ll continue that conversation. Plus, molded into which team situation are you currently most envious of going into this off season and what their future could look like? All that and more coming up next here on the DLSM podcast. But first, if you love Wendy’s Frosties, and honestly, who doesn’t, man? Who does not love Frosties? Well, we got some big news. There are all new Frosty Swirl and Frosty Fusion flavors that you can get in either chocolate or vanilla. I have uh a vanilla pop-tart strawberry Frosty Fusion. KG, over there, you have an Oreo brownie one. Tim, I believe that yours is a brownie batter frosty swirl. Uh you can go to Wendy’s and get these right now. It is incredible. I’m going to take a bite. Let’s go ahead. Go ahead. I love Pop-Tarts. I just want to put that out there. Anyone who knows me knows how much I love Pop-Tarts. Uh strawberry Pop-Tarts, absolutely goated. Uh anyway, whatever flavor you’re craving, this Oreo one slaps. I’m not going to lie. Odds are we’ve got a Frosty for it. So, clock in for a sweet treat anytime, including midnight or later, with Wendy’s all new frosty flavors. Uh I recommend getting some fries with it as well. A refresh on a classic. It’s got to be Wendy’s at participating US Wendy’s. Hours may vary by location. This is the best show we’ve ever had. Yeah, seriously. Um, and it’s also that way because we all smell good. You’re right. That’s quite a blockbuster trade in itself. You dealt the Mando read to KG to get the Wendy’s read. It is a big deal. Well, you know, it’s a big deal. Where? There was no reporting on that one. I don’t know why. Which direction do the first rounders go? I think Bobby had to probably give up. No, it’s equal. Wow. You really tried to do that, but it’s an equal trade. Okay, that’s true. Uh, which NBA’s current team situation are you most envious of going into this offseason? We dove into a little bit of some of the storylines that we’re going to be keeping our eye on in our first segment. A little bit later on, we’ll talk about Kyrie Irving and his contract situation uh as well. But when you start looking around as we get closer to the NBA offseason, the NBA Finals begin on Thursday, June 5th, with the Oklahoma City Thunder hosting the Indiana Pacers. The Oklahoma City Thunder will have homecourt advantage in the NBA Finals this year. As we look at situations around the league, whether it be the Houston Rockets, the San Antonio Spurs, obviously the envy of the league right now is the Dallas Mavericks holding the number one overall pick, which means Cooper Flag presumably is coming to Dallas. So, I’m sure there’s a lot of teams looking around that wanted to have the number one overall selection. But Bobby Kurles, I start with you on this one here. Which team in the NBA situation are you currently most envious of if you’re not looking at Dallas holding the number one overall pick, which means they have the right to select Cooper Flag? Well, okay, G, I’m glad I go first on this one cuz my answer is the Boston Celtics. Just kidding. Okay, just kidding. Um, can can we all just acknowledge OKC and then like actually OKC? That’s like the only answer is imagine having a roster full of 23 year olds that are all incredible and you own the next like 15 drafts outside of OKC. Um it’s tough man because like Brooklyn is a blank slate. So are you jealous of having endless possibilities? Are you jealous of a team like Utah that has a ton of picks, but you know, you don’t have an endless possibilities because you have a couple vets you got to decide what to do with and then you have Lowry and then you have Keonte George, like some building blocks. Um, you have a team like Phoenix where you can blow it up and acquire the blank slate, but it doesn’t really seem like there is uh Matt Eshbia, is that you? There’s there’s there’s 27 or 28 teams that would instantly trade. And that’s like only 26. For me personally, I think that, you know, Phoenix uh gets its picks back and is able to be kind of bad for a little bit in a Western Conference where everyone else is trying to be good. Like you’re zigging while everyone is zagging. I’m definitely not envious of their situation. Their situation is awful. But if I can get in there and make that situation a little better, give myself some runway. you’re working with an owner that has a ton of resources in a warm weather market. Um, you can be kind of good. So, I I I don’t know if my answer is Phoenix, but I do think that situation if I have total autonomy, which I’m not sure you would ever get working for an owner like Madishbia, but if I can, then I think that’s a pretty good situation. And I’m a little uh I’m a little intrigued by that. Houston. Houston’s another super obvious, I think, and I’ve seen it several times in the chat, but absolutely a a great answer to this. Uh they’ve got picks. They’ve got a lot of young players who I like a lot who are flexible and versatile where they clearly don’t have the number one guy. Maybe they don’t have the number two guy uh right now, but they have the ability. Amen becomes that pretty soon. It it sure well may be Amen. He’s probably going to be their second best player. He’s going to be their number two option. I guess we’ll find out about that. And the good thing is that Almond fits. Even if you brought in a number one and number two, Amen fits. If Jabari Smith stays on the team, he fits. Um, you know, they’ve Tari E fits. They’ve got a lot of players that Can I stop you there? Can I stop you there? Yeah. Are you sure? I I really enjoy Jabari Smith. Um, are we sure that they fit? Like, let’s say, okay, you’re let’s let’s get Van Vleet and Dylan Brooks. They’re going to age out eventually. Let’s say that it’s like Jaylen Green, Aman Thompson, Jabari Smith, and Shenun. Like, are you are you good with that? Do you actually think that fits? Because I look at that team and I say, man, they could really use some shooting. And I think their hierarchy is like a little kind of weird. Well, I’m saying they’re gonna fit when they they need the number one guy. They need the best player on the team. And I think that best player because they have players up and down the roster that are very versatile. I think Jabari Smith once give him another year or two of kind of this draft pedigree falling off. He’s going to be a Eric Gordon uh PJ Washington type player. He’s going to be one of those connective fours. I think I I think that there is a real chance that’s his career trajectory. Highend defender too. Yeah. high-end defender who spaces big shoots volume and has some chops to punish mis uh mismatches to create his own shot not as a option level you know but as a guy who does it within the flow of the offense like PJ yeah yeah like PJ like PJ like Aaron Gordon like like these guys and so I think I think Jabari fits so well now he he may end up going out uh in whatever deal they were they make whether it’s this summer whether it’s later on whether it’s Giannis whe whether you know whoever it is, but I think that he’s super versatile. I think Ammen is super versatile. I think they’ve got versatile players up and down their roster. Uh I still am in on Reed Shepard. You know, we’ll see exactly what happens there. But I just think that, you know, it’s not just the flexibility to make the swing. It’s the flexibility that when you make the swing, again, we’ll see which players actually are still on the roster, but I think that they have a lot of players that if they stay on the roster, they could fit well next to most number one options, most stars, most best players. I’d like to add a tag to my answer. Um, I really honestly feel like the best answer is probably outside of OKC is probably San Antonio, but I could never ever associate with that organization. Correct. I just want I want to put that out there. I didn’t forget the Spurs exist. Unfortunately, I always remember that they exist. Those are some intriguing answers. Obviously, Houston, yes, San Antonio. Obviously, the situation that Oklahoma City has. U Maran, before I go to you, you know, there’s a situation. I’m going to take it to the Eastern Conference since we’re so stuck on on the West right now. Indiana situation is really interesting to me because you’ve got your franchise point guard now and Tyresese Hallebertton. You’ve got some really nice cost control players when it comes to Andrew Nimhard, Aaron Nesmith. Obviously, they got to make a decision when it comes to Miles Turner, which I expect he would be back, you know, with them going forward and beyond after spending his first 10 season with the Indiana Pacers. I’m really interested and intrigued by their situation uh going forward because they got a lot of nice young pieces there, but most importantly, like I said, they’ve got a franchise point guard that they can build around for the next 10 years. Uh and Tyrese Hallebertton. If I’m going to take it to the Eastern Conference side, I think since we um we’re so heavy on the West Indiana situation is very interesting. I want to ask I want to react to something Bobby said. So, as you are the most overt lover of the Mavericks on this on this on this Empire floor, that is correct. So, the Spurs are the team you most dislike at this point in your life. Is that true? Is that is that uh Yeah. I mean, with with the Luca trade came the end of the Mav Suns rivalry. Um, I mean, you remember how fired up I was whenever the knife did what he needed to do to use Nerkage. Uh, yeah, it’s it’s always the Spurs. Always has been. That team haunted haunted my dreams as a kid. Uh, so yeah, that was in the midst that was in the midst of your youth. Mav’s first ever playoff run of my lifetime ended at the hands of Greg Papovic and Tim Duncan. That was the beat Utah, lose to the Spurs in the second round. I was there for game one. It was awful. Game one of the Spurs series. Of the Spurs series. Yeah. Game three and four of the Utah series. Yeah, we went to San Antonio. Does Ma Do the I mean, do the Mavs masses feel that way, you think? I don’t know. I guess let us know in the chat. Yeah, that I was curious about that. Who is We ranked the rivals during the season, but that was before the trade. Yeah, before the season. Before the trade. Yeah, I think that I I might have even cooled off on the Spurs for that tier list cuz I was like, I don’t really care about them, but I cuz I viewed them at different levels. Like I viewed the Spurs as not very good. Excuse me. And the Mavs is awesome. And I’m like, h it it’s hard for me to dig into the envy question. I mean, like I’m just going to take this in a completely different direction because I was really thinking about this over the weekend that like again yesterday marked four months since the Luca trade. We live in a city that I think Mavs fans are just so weary of being miserable and angry. They want to be happy. They want something to celebrate. They want to embrace what’s going to happen on June 25th with the draft selection of Cooper flag. But I have to say over the weekend, I just I was imagining us as SCTO and we’re doing the King show. They’re like, “So, this is the 180 degree opposite of Envy, but I just again I I can’t I can’t get over it. They didn’t draft Luca because they had Fox. Hallebertton slips to them. Now they have Fox and Hallebertton. Hallebertton joins the Kings in the middle of a playoff drought that at that point was what 14 seasons plus. Couldn’t have been prouder to be a king. More pro- Sacramento. I’m the guy who’s gonna help us get out of this mess. They trade Hallebertton in less than two seasons, which okay, they get Sabonis, an all-star big. It makes some sense because it I mean it was for so long it was painted as a win-win trade, but then they alienate Fox to the point that he wants to leave and now they have they they don’t have Luca, they don’t have Hallebertton, and they don’t have Fox. What would we say if this show was SCCTO? What would we What would we say? Fire latte. What would we say? That’s how bad teams stay bad. And on top of all on top of all that, 19 seasons, one playoff birth. I mean, bad bad team. Yeah, it’s gross out there in Sacramento. They they got a lot to to fix. Um, and I don’t know how long it’s going to take them to get that turned around. I mean, you you you I mean, hell, Marvin, talk about a fan base that you feel for. Again, I know the question was Envy. I They got the beam. The beam is cool. I didn’t have I didn’t have a prepared response for Envy, so I took it in the complete opposite direction, but this weekend, this past weekend, I was just like, what is it? How hard this must be for Kings fans to watch Hallebertton lead the Pacers to the finals. Because again, not only was he a good player, he was a good player as a king. I mean, he, you know, he wasn’t as he wasn’t what he is now. I mean, that’s what kind of links the Pacers and the Thunder is that both Hallebertton and SGA have become so good and have both outproduced their draft projection to a ridiculous degree to the point that, you know, Hallebertton is a full-fledged all-star face of the franchise and SGA just won MVP. But like on top of all that, Hallebertton loved being a king and he was like he joined them at the tail end of a 16-year playoff drought. That’s the longest in league history. They made it one time. They’ve now missed it two years in a row. Just like And now we got the Paul George Finals uh between the uh the Pacers and the the Oklahoma City Thunder. You you talk about big market players. Uh, Hallebertton is a small market player and I mean in the most complimentary sense possible. Like his whole heelt stick, his wrestling heel demeanor, the way he approaches basketball works so much better in a smaller market uh like Sacramento and and now like Indiana. Yeah, Tyresese Halleurn the perfect fit out there in Indiana for what they’ve got going on. Uh, and a perfect mirror with him and Rick Carlile and what they’ve been able to do. Sorry for ruining the envy segment. It’s okay, Mark. It’s okay. You did what you had to do. I freelanced on occasion. We appreciate it. You proved it. You did. We are just now 20 some odd days away from the NBA draft on June 25th and 26th where the Mavericks of course hold the number one overall pick. Um going to be selecting most likely of course Duke Cooper flag. Most likely. That’s right. Uh or the kid from Duke I should say. Jason kid, the kid from Duke. Did you watch these playoffs? Like anything 99.8% odds are not 100. Any nothing is set in stone until it happens. That’s very true. Uh he But yes, they’re going to draft Cooper. That’s right. Uh let’s take a look at the All City NBA mock draft, Bobby Krella, as uh we look at who may be going at number two or three or any surprises in the top 10 after Cooper Flag is taken number one. Yeah. So Derek from PHY and Will from CHCO got together for V2. They put out their first mock draft the day after the lottery and just like last time they got Cooper Flag going number one to the Mavs. So no surprises there. For a full write up on all the prospects in this entire draft class. Uh the Die Hard Draft Guide is available on our website with scouting reports, stats, analysis, projections, and all that stuff from each of the top like 100 guys, video breakdowns, the whole bit. So, it’s a great resource if you’re a draft head. Uh, but they did a first round mock, no changes. Cooper flag number one, Dylan Harper number two. Um, Derek is a a Sixers guy. And so, I’m sure that he had significant influence on the Sixers mock pick at number three. And, uh, they went Ace Bailey number three. Oh, interesting. Got Newbeck did this, right? Yep. No, no, no. Uh, Derek Bodner and Will Gotautle. Bodner and Gotautle. My bad. Um, so Ace Bailey, they go for upside, not uh I guess I don’t know the reports recently is like Trey Johnson could go number three and even come on Malaw. Yeah. Um, not I like the Trey Johnson part. Oh, okay. Uh, Tanner’s favorite player, BJ Edgecom goes number four. Baylor’s finest to the Hornets. And then Utah gets Trey Johnson. Now that’s uh noteworthy to me because it feels like the Jazz draft a guard every year. This would be like the 14th year in a row that they take a guard. But Colin Sexton on the move. Yeah. And that relates to the Mavs because of course there are a lot of fans in our chat every day that are like, “Hey, Colin Sexton is the guy. Let’s get Colin Sex. Let’s get Colin Sexton.” Didn’t you start that? No, I think that might have been a TCAT. Was that a TCAT joint or I definitely brought up his name a lot. Uh yeah, so probably me. I don’t I don’t think I I wasn’t starting anything. I was just mentioning him as a player I like and who I think fits. Let’s stop that for just a second. when it comes to Utah Mars because I’m interested. They of course have hired a new um president of basketball operations. Uh Danny Angel’s son is going to be taking over. They’re going to be the number one decision maker. What’s kind of the vision if we’re looking at them there uh when it comes to their draft, but also just the vision overall and what that could look like going forward there. Well, a lot of people around the league have their eyes on the Jazz because Austin A, as you said, Danny A’s son is the new is the new shot caller in Utah according to the hierarchy they laid out at a press conference yesterday and Austin A was flat out asked. Look, the Jazz tanked this season. They openly tanked this season. That’s why the Utah loss became a drinking game on this show early in the season. There it is. My guy was ready. He didn’t know I was going to do that and he was ready. Oh, he was ready. Um, but Utah tanked. Remember the first two seasons, Will Hardy was their coach. They started out 26 and 26. They were a 500 team for more than half the season, then tanked. This time they flat out tanked. They had the worst record in the league. They fell as far in the lottery as they possibly could. They they went 17 and 65, ended up with a number five pick. So yesterday, Austin A was asked and flat out said, “We’re not doing that again.” What’s so interesting is BYU has Debansa, who’s the projected top pick in the 2026 draft. And so for the Jazz to come out and outright say, “No, we’re not tanking. We’re going to, you know, play to win next season.” Right away, that makes you wonder, really? because wouldn’t you want to give yourself a shot at winning the the lottery that that leads a BYU superstar? But the more pertinent question it spawns is what kind of trades are they going to be looking at? Is Lowry Markin now going to be someone who they consider moving? You know, Lowry Markin was signed to a contract extension last summer specifically designed that he wouldn’t you couldn’t even consider trading him until the off season. Lowry Markin was not trade eligible during the season. So, we’ll have to see what happens there. But I I think the let’s call it the working assumption in the league right now is that Ston and Jordan Clarkson are both available. So, will will one or either be traded? Well, there you go, Mass fans. That’s something to think about there. Go ahead, Mario. That’s two guards. Yeah, that’s two guards as a and they’re both kind of two guards. I see what you’re doing there. Thank you. Uh number six, they got Washington taking Jeremiah Fears. It’s a little That’s two guard action with uh the goat Jordan Pool. Um, and that’s a big that’s a steep. Fears has a pretty wide range. Feels like he’s he’s climbing a little bit. I thought he was lower top 10. Um, like maybe in the 9 to 11 range. From my understanding, there’s a little bit of buzz that maybe he’s going to be a little bit higher. Uh, however, I I think there’s also a scenario where if he misses, if he if he goes if he slips past six, maybe seven, it could be a situation where he’s 15. Okay? You know, where it’s it’s it’s not that he has a huge range. It’s just that there’s a few teams in the middle of the top 10 that would be interested. A few teams in the middle of the the tens, you know, 11 to to 20 that would be interested. Uh that said, I I think if he starts getting uh late lottery or out of the lottery, it’s also a scenario where somebody might move up for him. Interesting. Okay. Uh Toronto gets common malawatch. There was a report recently that he could go as high as three. Of course, like Mark said, who even knows anything this time of year? Everything is constantly changing all the time. Uh Carter Bryant to Houston at 10. That’s annoying. That’s another athlete. That would be uh great for the Rockets to just get more guys that can run fast and jump high with really long wingspans. Uh Derek Queen, a player of note in this mark draft falls all the way to 14 going to the Spurs. Just what they need another my Spurs. Yeah, another big for the Spurs. Um, but then also like I think in their first draft he went number six to Washington and Jeremiah Fears was like 12 or 13 or something and now they kind of trade spots. So maybe it’s just like and really you could make the same case for number three too like between Bailey and I mean this is exactly why I didn’t want the Mavs to get the third or the fourth pick because you could take Ace Bailey or you could take Derek Queen or Jeremiah Fears. You could take Malawatch or you could take Trey Johnson like the range of player whenever there’s 25 third picks that really means there’s no third picks. Great point. And so getting getting the number one pick I got to say is pretty great. I think it feels good. Um, two mock drafts in a Yeah, two mock drafts in a row that Cedric Howard goes to OKC. That is really annoying. Just stop giving them good players. I don’t know how it’s legal, how it’s allowed for the Thunder to have another good pick. Um, I think he should be a lottery pick. Like really, I I think he I think he might possibly He dropped out of uh workouts and and scrimmages and stuff. And OKC is very famous for giving players promises. And so I think it’s it it does kind of do that you do the what’s going on in OKC thing because anytime a player stops working out OKC is always involved somehow. OKC a very prominent example of that I I believe was the legend Cameron Payne uh in 2015 deep cut. Wow. Uh Jace Richardson guy that I was keeping an eye on at 11 for the Mavs. Uh goes 19 to Brooklyn. Uh got a bunch of guards. Got a bunch of guards. Got a bunch of guards. But notably though, first off, no Tim Ko in the first round. Oh, I got out of Michigan. Yeah, I’ve also stopped workouts. I have a promise. Oh, you have? Yeah. Oh, wow. Makes sense. Uh, yeah. Danny Wolf is not anywhere. My medicals came back with some concerns. What would you do? I found out for the Mavs to somehow figure out a way to acquire Danny Wolf. So, I would love it. I would love it. Are you kidding me? be the best day of my like day two of the draft would be better than day one. You get Cooper Flag and Danny Wolf and then we get him and then we get him on the set. Oh my god. Oh my I would be just over the moon. I’d offer him a Frosty. Like I just give everything give up your seat. I would give up my seat for Danny Wolf as long as I could take yours. Oh, you have to do that segment. Yeah, I gotta be on with Danny. Uh Liam McNeely to Brooklyn at number 27. from Yukon. And uh notably for all the the there have been a lot of chatters that have said, “Hey, like what what do you think about the Mavs either trading into the second round, early second round, or late first round trying to get Walter Clayton?” Uh not mocked in the first round at all in this mock, which I just I thought was interesting, you know. Were there any trades in there? Uh they do not mock trades. Okay. In in the NBA, it is trying to figure out draft trades is you need like a like a one of those things that tells you where the stars are in the sky. True. Okay. Any surprises from you that stood out to you from that based off of what you saw there? Um, Ace Bailey number three. I don’t you not feeling ace Bailey? I just don’t know, man. It’s kind of We got to see what Philly does there first. So, first there was the chatter that they would want to use that pick to try to package it for a vet. And I mean, it’s been stressed to me in the strongest terms that no, they want they want they want a high lottery infusion of talent. So, now would they trade it down a couple spots in the right situation? which speaks to your point that you made that three might not be terribly different than four, five, six, and seven. So, I do think there’s some chance there that they maybe they they maybe entertain trading it down a spot or two. But if they do move it, I don’t think they’re going down very far. I think they’re gonna one way or the other they are either staying at three or end ending up with a pretty high lottery. Ace Ace Bailey is so fascinating because I if if he had never taken or made made or taken a contested two in his entire life, I still think he’s about like a a 15 or 20 in this draft as like a maybe higher as like a high upside 3 and D wing uh with a little bit of like creation upside creation potential uh you know a lot like Mikuel Bridges. Problem is he is not bad. He is somebody who, you know, the league and and and the the scouting reports and by all accounts, uh, himself views as like a go-to scoring option, uh, on shots that may not come as easily, uh, you know, only, you know, the the level of difficulty of of a lot of the shots he was taking in college were, you know, Kevin Durant level, uh, you know, like these these Hall of Fame type players. That’s not something you can project. You can’t project that in the draft. And so if if he if he is sliding into like just this, you know, Mikuel Bridges, if he was just if he saw himself, if the league saw him as Muel Bridges, I think he’d still be a really high prospect because he’s hyper athletic. He’s got a lot of defensive potential even if he hasn’t like shown at all. Uh he’s obviously absolutely a good shooter. Uh the the question is is like is there a way to you know if if his if his onball scoring doesn’t pop in the way that it it needs to. Uh if it turns out that you know especially because his measurements are you know a little bit uh a little bit lower than what everybody was hoping or or what they were you know listed at at uh at uh Ruckers right? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. and and uh you know, if all that doesn’t pop, is this going to be a player who you know, commits to another lane or avenue of of NBA success? Uh also, what’s the likelihood that he that he does pop? Because, you know, again, at some point, you just don’t know. You just don’t know with with uh when you’re talking about teenagers. So, you know, he’s a really talented, really athletic, really interesting prospect for a lot of reasons. Uh it’s just a matter of like why are you drafting him? What are you drafting him to be? What do you see him being? what does he see himself being is do those visions align? Um because if he commits to being a 3 and D type player like goes to Philly on a team loaded with veteran veterans, you know, it’s not like Philly is going to say like don’t become a star if that’s his path forward. But I I think actually, weirdly enough, going to a team like Philly where he can’t have that role, but I think there probably will be room for minutes, I could see that working. I could see that making sense. Uh but then also if the evaluation of him as like a like a high-end number one creator or even number two guy, if that doesn’t pan out, then you also have to ask yourself or if you’re Philly and you’re have questions about that, you have to ask yourself, should we use the number three pick on him? You know, is is that you know, is that creation highle upside uh worth spending this draft slot? Uh but clearly the entire league does seem to feel that way since he’s been 345 this whole time. So, just a really interesting kind of maybe not enigma, but just a really interesting case study of draft and draft prospects and draft processes uh and and just how to evaluate a college kid who was one thing in college uh who’s probably going to be a different thing early on early in his career and we’ll see where it goes from there. Make sure you check out the all city NBA mock draft as we get closer to the NBA draft coming up on June 25th and 26th. Of course, your Mavericks hold the number one overall pick. Let’s take our final break here on the DLS Mavs podcast. Let’s finish up here on the DLLS Mavs podcast by jumping into the Kyrie Irving contract situation. Before we get there, let’s get to our super chat we’ve got from a night 405 with the $1.99 super chat. Uh Sam Prey’s skill versus Nico’s luck. I imagine that’s the story line they’re going to be following. There are a lot of people that said that Nico didn’t get lucky, that he was right all along. And there are others that said that it was rigged. So, you’re uh you’re working against a lot of forces. It’s not just Sam Prey. It was rigged. You know what else? You know what else was rigged? Uh the NBA finals between the two smallest markets and the uh Yeah. See that they set that up because they wanted to throw people off to beat the narrative. Like since the lottery was rigged, let’s do the opposite. Distracted stanza for the finals. You’re never going to believe this one. The paces. What if we just don’t have a finals? that would really throw him off the scent. I see what you did there. Um, let’s get into it as we finish up on our show today because Kyrie Irving has a decision to make coming up on June 24th when it comes to opting in or out of the $43 million player option that he has this summer. Bobby Marks of ESPN throwing up the off season um candidates when it comes to opting out in terms of their contracts or becoming Tanner pulling out all the stops today. I got you. Utah game QR codes. That’s right. He’s got He’s got it all today. Um Kai Irving is eligible to sign a contract extension uh on July 6th and his deadline to uh get that extension done would be June 30th if he opted in to his $43 million uh contract option. Irving will likely be on two list this summer. Key extension candidates and free agents to watch. If Irvy opts into his $43 million salary prior to June 24th, both sides will be allowed to negotiate a deal for up to four years at $267 million between the Mavericks and Kyrie Irving. Considering Irving turned 33 in March and is coming off of a significant knee injury and teammate Anthony Davis is under contract for the next three seasons. However, it is difficult to see the Mavericks committing more than two years on an extension starting at $59 million. Bobby Marsh predicts that Irving opts out of his contract and signs a new fresh deal with the Dallas Mavericks this summer. Mark Stein, I’ll start with you uh when it comes to this because that’s going to be one of the biggest pieces of business that the Mavericks have to take care of getting Kyrie Irving done. Um your thoughts when you see not only that information but when it comes to Kyrie Irving and the decision that he has to make going forward here. It is and it’s it is complicated. And look, around the league, I think the expectation is I don’t hear anyone forecasting scenarios where Kyrie Irving is no longer a Maverick. I I haven’t heard one scenario presented where he ends up with another team. But I also don’t have a handy projection for how this contract is going to turn out. During the season, the whispers that were going around was that the Mavs would like to do a three-year deal in the 40 a year range. So, a three-year deal that was 3120 again. But the circumstances have changed in two major ways. On one hand, Kyrie Irving is the only elite proven guard on this roster. And with Luca Donuch no longer here, his value to the Mavericks has theoretically skyrocketed. But on the flip side, of course, as everyone knows, in early March, he sustained an ACL tear. And even though you also hear nothing but confidence that he’s going to bounce back from this injury as well as you can, that’s what everybody projects and expects. They no one can still tell you when we’re going to see Kyrie or is it January? Is it February? And so predicting how this plays out, I wish I was that smart. I I you know, again, I don’t see a scenario where he is not a Mav, but exactly where the numbers land, it’s hard to say right now in early June. It felt like this player was on his way to being an allNBA player this year with the kind of year that he was having. Uh that would give you an idea that he was going to be in line for a potential raise. Um one thing that is interesting that may or may not have any bearing on a Kyrie Irving contract, but I did think that never was interesting, uh a report floating out there that Tyler Herro could sign a three-year contract worth $150 million, basically giving him $50 million a season. That’s just something just to keep in mind when you’re thinking about guards making that kind of money. Um but obviously that is number one for the Mavericks in terms of business to get done going forward here. Yeah. Last season Kyrie made about uh 29% of the the cap and eligible for 35. And the question, you know, I I think it’s clear from his play, you know, and and Kyrie ressigned he signed this contract initially with very very you know, almost no interest around the league. Certainly not at that at those numbers. uh there was almost no interest around the league. There was no interest around the league at the numbers that Dallas was willing to resign him at and uh he signed it after Dallas had just crashed out, flamed out, not through any fault of Kyrie, but had just flamed out of the the playoffs. That was uh 2023. They ended up getting Derek Lively, as you guys all know. uh by his play over the past two seasons, he has absolutely earned something at least closer to his max 35% of the salary cap slot. He’s absolutely earned that. Um and I think when you look at the roster now that Luca isn’t here, he certainly has the leverage. Uh but then there’s also the injury there. There is the injury at play. So I don’t know how all those get balanced. And I think some of it does come down to Kyrie. uh what does Kyrie want to push for? So, you know, as long as he wants to be back in Dallas, uh, you know, I think that, you know, I I don’t I don’t know who ends up, you know, which which scale gets tipped, but it does feel like, you know, when you consider that he’s outplayed what he’s making and they need him, but nobody can deny he’s going to miss half of next season and there’s a little bit of, you know, if it ends up being something very similar, maybe a slight raise, um, it feels it feels like it makes sense. And you know, it would also be more money. That’s the interesting thing. Do you sign up to more money, but you keep him at the same percentage slot? Uh, that would be a very fair thing for Kyrie Irving to argue. Say, you know, I’m going to miss a lot of next season and have now have these injury concerns even if both sides feel very confident about it. Where he’s like, I don’t need a raise. I need the percentage that you were gonna pay me, that you were paying me to match what is the new salary cap. I mean, one one thing in the Mav’s favor here that we need to add, only the Nets have cap space. Now, the Nets have tons of cap space, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say the Nets will not be using their cap space to go get sign Kyrie Irving. So, I mean, there’s no leverage. There would have to be a sign and trade for him to try to create a market. And again, there’s there’s been no indicate I want to stress there’s been no indication that he’s looking to go elsewhere. I mean, around no one has the requisite space to add him anyway. It feels like but and but that’s why this it was a hard negotiation last time. I mean, last time the Mavericks were essentially bidding against themselves and gave him a deal with a player option in year three. That raised a lot of eyebrows. A lot of people were shocked that why is why is Irving getting the option in year three as opposed to the team now? The trade worked out, that deal worked out. Do you bet on the parties to find a middle ground that satisfies all these issues? I mean, history would suggest yes. The the leverage he has is himself. And again, I am I am just I all I am laying out I am not laying out any any actual insight into how these negotiations are going to go. the one bit of leverage he has is himself. He if he goes to the Mavericks and says, uh, you know, I totally understand the situation that that you know that we’re, you know, you guys are in that we’re in that I’m in, and I think it’s totally fair to resign a very similar deal, but I want it to match percentage-wise to how the salary cap has increased. And the Mavericks say, “No, we want to keep you at the exact same dollar figure, three for 120, that you were at previously.” Uh the leverage he has is that I you know I just made the argument why you should pay me a little bit more and you disagreed and the leverage is that Kyrie is like I want to be happy here. I want to feel respected. I made a very reasonable case about why I should earn this amount and if you guys are going to come under that that’s fine. That’s one thing but I’m also you know in charge of my body and in charge of my rehab and I want to be back as soon as possible and I want to be my best self as soon as possible. Uh but you know part of being able to do that is feeling respected on the basketball court by the you know employer who uh employs me. So I am just telling you how the leverage can work, how it can go down. I think all signs is that this is going to go perfectly fine and smoothly. Uh but I do think because Dallas needs them so badly even though there’s no outside leverage. I think Kyrie, a player like Kyrie always has leverage. All good. Carella, I guess. I mean, I I just personally I don’t know. He’s not going to play this year, so like why why should he get a raise, you know? Like he’s great player. Uh it whenever you’re already in a situation where like they literally can’t make trades right now. They’re over the Second Apron. There is no way that I’m gonna go into the Second Apron to for Kyrie to miss 60 games. I’m just I’m not doing that. I’m not a GM, though. But if you’re carry say okay, you know, you start with me and then you make all the other moves around that. Yeah, I’m not I’m not doing that personally. But well, we will continue this conversation throughout the course of the offseason. We’ve got a few weeks before Kyrie even makes that decision when it comes to his player option. Uh and there will be a lot to discuss on that front moving forward here. We want to appreciate our guy Tanner making us look good and sound good as always. Thank you, sir.
