Adam Silver speaks on having 2 small market teams in NBA Finals and Mavs getting pick 1

The NBA Finals tips off tomorrow night and Adam Silva spoke about having two smaller markets in the NBA Finals. It’s one thing I really admire about the NFL. I mean, if if we were going into a Super Bowl and it was Packers against Steelers, you guys would be celebrating that. Nobody would those would be storied franchises. People wouldn’t be talking about, you know, the fact that Pittsburgh is a small market. So we in in fact, you know, I’m happy whatever team ends up in the finals, but it’s been intentional from our standpoint to create a system, a collective bargaining agreement that allows more teams to compete. And just by way of background, you know, we’re going to have to go through a process of getting to the point where people are accustomed to tuning into the finals because it’s the two teams that deserve to be there and it’s the best basketball. is similar to again with the Super Bowl. If I asked somebody if they were gonna watch the Super Bowl, they wouldn’t say who’s playing. It’s a national holiday. And now that’s Nirvana, you know. Yeah. That I’m not saying we’re we’re anywhere close to that yet. There’s still if the Knicks are in the finals, there’s a segment of our fan base that’s going to watch that may not watch if it’s other teams, but my job is to get people to love and follow this game. And so that if you’re a huge basketball fan, you should want to tune in to the finals because that’s the best basketball. And he also spoke about the lottery and the Dallas Mavericks getting the number one pick. You know, one reminder too, we call it, you know, a lottery and I think sometimes because the lottery people think it must have been a one in a million chance that Dallas was going to win. I mean, remember the the worst performing team had a 14% chance of winning, which means there was an 86% chance they wouldn’t get it. Dallas had roughly a 2% chance. So, you know, the the the losingest team had a seven times better chance. So, 2%’s 2%. It’s going to happen. And you know when people say and therefore the lottery was broken I have a different view which the purpose of the lottery is to disincentivize teams from tanking. And so here you had a team which was clearly trying whatever people think of that trade they were trying to win. You know they then Kyrie got injured then Anthony Davis got injured and so then they found themselves in the lottery. So again, you know, it’s on the level and then odds are odds and that’s how it turned

  1. I have said that SAME Thing about the NFL. Nobody says a WORD when it's Packers/Bills in the SuperBowl. Why? Because the teams were treated the same by the MEDIA. When the best teams won, you followed the SPORT. The NBA has itself to blame to allow the NBA analysts to be total fanboys and not even COVER their own sport.

  2. I love that it’s two small market teams from ā€œfly-over states.ā€ I wish those kinds of teams would get more airtime on national TV.

  3. Dallas chance to win draft pick is less than 2%, but Dallas chance to win draft pick right after they made one of the worst trade in NBA history ? that's 0 chance.

  4. ā€œMy job is to get people to love and follow this gameā€.
Well what a horrible job he is doing at that, as the league becomes a joke and ratings drop.
I love basketball the sport, but I sure as hell don’t love watching the NBA as much as I used to.

  5. Conspiracy theorists will see Oklahoma City and Indiana in the nba finals and still find a way to call it rigged for ratings, there's just no end to it

  6. Because of NBA YouTube highlights I started watching . So the idea of big vs. small markets doesn’t really matter to me. All my teams lost but I’m still interested in watching OTC win game 7

  7. The Mavs deserved the pick, they were resilient, they lost games but they played their butts off night in night out

  8. He’s responsible for creating a culture of ā€œwinning doesn’t matterā€, non-physical, no-defense, flopping basketball that almost nobody wants to watch anymore.

  9. I am a basketball fan but i dont like the ref bringing the smaller market there, the new rules of cannot breath around SGA is too much for some to handle. šŸ˜‚

  10. Due to the NBA's revenue sharing there are no more small market teams… Notice that the Stern era had dynasties. Silver comes along and now a different team wins the title every season under his manipulation of the system.

Silver, the svengali behind the Luka deal and the Mavs getting the #1 overall pick.

  11. I swear this small market stuff never mattered until silver took over and espn started covering the lakers every day even when they weren't playing

  12. Nicely said by Silver, and it IS true they have tried to make the league more competitive and make the formation of super teams (in big markets) more and more difficult.

  13. Pittsburgh is a small market city, but not even close to a small market franchise. The Steelers are one of the most popular, successful, and lucrative franchises in the nfl and all of sports. They have one of the largest fan bases in America.

  14. Let's be clear: the draft "lottery" has been in place 30 years now. On 14 occasions (half the time) teams with a 5% or lower chance got the #1 pick & on 8 of those occasions, the odds were (purportedly) 2% or lower. It's being manipulated by the NBA & no other explanation accounts for those results.

  15. he's basically saying it's scripted. He's explaining all this like he has to answer. does he have to give an explanation why OKC in Indiana are in the finals. if the sport is random and anybody could win, did Adam Silver should not explain the information like he has to defend himself.
