Dennis Rodman says the Spurs traded him to RUIN the Bulls

dennis Rodman is one of the most fascinating figures in NBA history a rebounding savant a defensive genius and a cultural icon who blurred the line between chaos and brilliance but he’s also never been shy about speaking his mind we know him best as the wild card who helped complete the Chicago Bulls second three repeat in the 1990s but before that he was a misfit in San Antonio a turbulent headline making enigma alongside David Robinson but here’s the twist dennis Rodman believes the Spurs didn’t just trade him to the Chicago Bulls because of his antics he says it was intentional that Greg Papovic now widely regarded as one of the greatest head coaches of all time traded him to sabotage the Bulls today we’re unpacking that theory was it punishment was it a miscalculation or was it something deeper about the clash between Rodman and the Spurs’s now famous culture i know why he did that i know why Papa did that to me you think I’m going to ruin this team i still believe that to this day after winning championships with the Detroit Pistons and becoming the NBA’s undisputed rebounding king Dennis Rodman found himself in San Antonio in 1993 and statistically he didn’t miss a beat rodman led the league in rebounding both seasons with the Spurs pulling down an insane 17.3 rebounds per game over his 2-year stint but off the court it was absolute chaos rodman was suspended for headbutting Stacy King then he did the same to John Stockton he once refused to leave the court after being ejected and let’s not forget this was around the same time he was publicly dating Madonna all of this in the span of a couple of seasons his second year was even more dramatic he clashed with the front office missed significant time due to suspension and suffered a shoulder injury after crashing his motorcycle isn’t it common sense that if you make millions of dollars a year and your job is contingent upon staying in good physical condition you wouldn’t go skiing snowmoiling or ride motorcycles not to Rodman who suffered a separated shoulder in a motorcycle accident on Sunday despite all of that the Spurs finished with the best record in the NBA with 62 wins but after a playoff loss to the Houston Rockets everything exploded rodman criticized then head coach Bob Hill calling him a loser he reportedly had open friction with the newly minted general manager Greg Papovic and just like that he was gone in October 1995 Dennis Rodman was traded to the Chicago Bulls for Will Perurdue yes Will Perduru at face value it looked like a desperate move by the Chicago Bulls to fill the void Horus Grant had left at Power Forward but to Rodman it was something else entirely in his own words he said “I know why Papovic did that to me you think I’m going to ruin this team still believe that to this day am I the same guy that said that averaged 19.3 rebounds a game for you am I the same guy we won 68 damn games am I that same guy right there but but you guys don’t like me i said “Okay great trade me.” So they tra they trade me to the of course he traded me to the the damn bulls so I mean trade me to the damn bull people so so it’s like but it’s but that that that is that is so funny though because I know why he did that i know why Papovich did that to me he think I’m going to ruin this team i still believe that to this day he did that because he thought he was going to win that team rodman says Papovic believed his volatile personality would blow up the Bulls’s chemistry that this was not just a trade it was a punishment disguised as a transaction an act of sabotage to send a ticking time bomb into Chicago’s title contending locker room and if we’re being honest it wasn’t that far-fetched rodman’s behavior had been disrupted he was suspended injured combative and flatout defiant in San Antonio from Papovic’s point of view it’s not hard to see why he would have believed the Bulls were taking on a major risk but here’s the kicker the gamble backfired not on Chicago but on San Antonio instead of imploding the bulls Rodman thrived phil Jackson did what Papovic couldn’t he let Rodman be Rodman he didn’t try to mold him into a traditional player he didn’t clash with him philosophically he found a way to maximize the madness rodman gave the Bulls three years of elite defense relentless rebounding and unmatched hustle he led the league in rebounds every year of the second three Pete he even managed to stay relatively on the rails well as much as Rodman could it wasn’t just a success it was poetic irony papovic tried to sink the bulls with Rodman and Rodman became the exact missing piece they needed he fit in perfectly with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen especially during those brutal matchups against Carl Malone and the Utah Jazz rodman didn’t just survive in Chicago he flourished this also brings us to something bigger the Spurs culture the San Antonio Spurs are praised across the league for their discipline unselfishness and professionalism their dynasty from Duncan to Parker to Gobi to Kawaii is often seen as the blueprint for sustainable excellence but it didn’t work for everyone rodman clashed with that culture he wasn’t religious he wasn’t regimented he was emotional artistic and rebellious he once said Papovich didn’t like him because he wasn’t a Bible guy david Robinson even admitted on the Bulls Talk podcast that while Rodman had a good heart he was ultimately destructive to the team’s chemistry robinson said there was nothing you could do to make him get out of his comfort zone and maybe that’s the key spurs culture doesn’t bend it demands assimilation for someone like Rodman who thrived when allowed to be different that rigidity was a death sentence so yes the Spurs system does work brilliantly in fact but Rodman exposed a flaw in its design it struggles to accommodate outliers it has little patience for managing personality if Rodman’s theory is true if the Spurs traded him to the Bulls out of spite or as punishment then his redemption in Chicago becomes even more legendary he didn’t just prove Papovic wrong he helped build one of the greatest teams of all time he was the third star the X Factor the man crashing the boards diving for loose balls and guarding Hall of Famers every night it’s poetic and it forces us to look at the Spurs dynasty with nuance yes Papovic is a Hall of Famer yes the culture in San Antonio is elite but even the best systems have blind spots sometimes the very structure that creates greatness can push away unique talent that doesn’t conform rodman wasn’t the last person to push back on the Spurs culture kawhi Leonard too quietly rebelled against it in the end now these may be outliers but they prove a point no system works for everyone in the end Papovic built a legacy that will stand the test of time but Rodman carved his own story one of defiance brilliance and redemption and maybe the best part so many fans have forgotten he ever played for the San Antonio Spurs at all maybe that’s the real punishment so what do you guys think was Papovic trying to sabotage the Bulls or was Rodman just too unpredictable for the Spurs to handle was this one of the biggest miscalculations in NBA history as well drop your thoughts in the comments let’s talk about it and if you enjoyed this video don’t forget to like share Dennis Rodman is one of the most fascinating figures in NBA history. A rebounding savant, a defensive genius, and a cultural icon who blurred the line between chaos and brilliance. But he’s also never been shy about speaking his mind. We know him best as the wildcard who helped complete the Chicago Bulls’ second three-peat in the 1990s. But before that? He was a misfit in San Antonio.
