continuing our draft series draft coming up here now in less than three weeks um the Miami Heat are holding a draft party at the arena we will be there not the party part but we’ll be at the covering part uh it’s usually when Pat comes down at about 1 in the morning and tells us uh that he’s sleepy and then gets upset about the memes that come afterwards but we will be there um Alex myself and Brady it’s past both of their bedtimes but they’ll be joining us for podcast the Heat are going to set us up for a place to do it which we appreciate and we will cover the draft from there um we have done a bunch of different episodes here we’ve talked about you know guards that can make a difference for the Heat uh we we at one point talked about if they could get in the top five we don’t expect that to happen at this stage um we’ve also talked about players that could have been there at 15 if that pick hadn’t gone away and of course now it’s Cooper Flag um for Dallas although there were a couple things that had to play out for that to occur and it wouldn’t have happened out happened in the Heat but we’re going to get very specific about a topic today which is and I know you don’t like this word so we’re going to try to come up with a different word but we’ve talked about we did another episode about a lot of the guards are going back to school and so this has changed the complexion of the draft somewhat and I use the word reach i said “Do if you’re the Heat do you reach for somebody who you really need or really like but may not be projected to go at a certain spot?” And we know and I’ll just preface it with this we know that the Heat have a very particular way of doing things they don’t really care how other teams value a player they care how they value the player Adele and so for them it would not be perceived as a reach to say move up a few splots to make sure they get a guy who may be projected at 23 24 25 when they pick 20th but you get up to 13 or 14 and take the player because that’s your guy i will say Tyler Hero was not projected as to go as high as 13 when the Heat picked him he was projected to go sort of late teens uh Bam was not a slam dunk to be in the top 15 prior to that draft dwayne Wade was not projected to go in the top five by most he was projected to go ninth overall to the the Bulls so I’ll just ask you is there another word we can come up with other than reach so I can’t put one specific word on it the way I like to describe it is that you have to have a range of players so five spots earlier than you normally would take somebody or a player falls down five spots uh that you you thought he wouldn’t be there so there really kind of like a a range more than you know reaching for a player so to speak okay so we’re talking about a range of players and as you have this draft kind of cataloged and I know we’re not complete in it because a lot of things can happen between now and then and just had a Chicago camp and measurables and all this sort of stuff but the way that I understood you sort of saw this draft as we got into it initially before players started going back to school was you have Cooper Flag at the top then you had like five other guys who might be franchise changing players and then you had a lot of variability from kind of seven on down to the 20s is that is that still fair absolutely that is absolutely still fair where where it kind of changed things when all these guards went back to school is from like pick 15 to say pick 25 okay that’s where it kind of reshuffled the entire deck in my eyes okay so 15 to 25 and of course the heat pick right in the middle of that so that’s that’s where this gets a little dicey we always have the moments during the draft too where we get up about three picks before the heat pick and then we’re engaging with everybody on Twitter on playback you can follow the draft with us on playback.tvsn yes you are and so we start to do this and it’s like okay well Cam Whitmore is available for instance right right this is somebody that he fans had heard of so all of a sudden because let’s just and again I want to be fair on this because I don’t watch a ton of college basketball during the season anymore i used to i kind of catch up with it during the tournament and I’m not breaking down film in any way close to the way you Matt and others do okay and and even our guys at five on the floor greg picks it up a little bit late alex starts to evaluate it around now brady’s going to start doing his threads so we’re catching up and by the way we’re not alone because Eric Buller is acknowledged he doesn’t watch a lot of college basketball he kind of zeros in on it after you know a vacation and then getting elim after getting eliminated okay so had more time this year so but there’s always guys that are like “Okay we’ve heard of this player.” And so of course you’ve heard of this player we did another episode about Walter Clayton Jr who Moshe Heat fans if you can say “Have you heard of five players in this draft?” That’s probably one of the five because he just won a national championship for Florida and there’s a lot of Gators uh in South Florida who’s the guy that Heat fans before we get into players that the Heat might reach for that Heat fans as we get up to 15 16 and that player’s not taken will say “Oh you got to go up and get that guy who who’s the guy this year now that that’s actually a great point so like when you start getting around like 15 for example Ben Sif is going to be there jason Richardson may have just went off the board um Nick Clifford Carter Bryant those guys i think those are going to be the be some of the guys that people are going to be like “Oh we got to jump on those guys because we hear those guys and those names.” Uh a real common one is is going to be Rashier Fleming if he’s still on the board at 15 like oh you got to go up and get Rashier Fleming which he’s going to be you know a great player 41% from three 76 wingspan as a wing uh that’s that’s impressive so you’re going to hear a lot a lot about Rashier Fleming as the Miami Heat pick approaches uh even maybe an a Jagger Denman to a to a casual fan because he was very well known throughout the entire college season um and throughout this draft process he’s projected you know to go go higher but I wouldn’t I wouldn’t take Jerger and we’ve done an episode on on uh Jace Richardson we’ve also done and and Rasheed Fleming we touched on both of those guys uh in that same draft we’ve also talked a lot about Trey Jones who we don’t think is going to be there at that point and then uh and then the Marquette guard um Cam Jones cam Jones I’m sorry so you’re right exactly cam Jones which uh we’ve talked about him too and I know you’re not a huge fan of of picking him at 20 okay on the other side of this we’ll talk about players we think the Heat might jump up for maybe you think they should jump up for not necessarily the ones that the fans would uh before we do by the way not a lot of not enough of you uh signed up for this okay because if you had and you picked me you’d have money right now because what we’re doing is on prize picks make sure you sign up with code five that’s the most important thing you get your $50 to play right away it is legal in the state of Florida again yes fully legal but what we’re doing is we’re having a contest on every finals game where Brady myself Alex and Greg each get 20 bucks to play and we can play it any way we want but we can only play up to the 20 bucks and we see who wins and if you had gone if you’d been industrious enough to go below the tweet that I posted on Five Reasons Sports which by the way is still pinned up there and looked at our cards and chosen a fighter so to speak if you had chosen me and been the only one to choose me you would already have an additional $20 in promo funds in your account so you should do this for the next game because and you should choose me because uh here’s the standings right now i played 20 and I got 45 greg played 20 he got 15 alex got played 20 and he got zero brady played 20 and he got yes the great Brady Hawk zero so I’m inviting you all to check out the tweet that we do for game two as we’re going to play again and I’m inviting you all to follow me and then one of you who follows me after I win again which I will uh you’ll get $20 to play right away but the first thing you need to do is sign up for prize pics use the code fiv have some fun with us get $50 to play and potentially get another $20 in promo funds all right so let’s get to the players that you think maybe they should you want to do this as first as should or will or No there is no will right there’s no there is no will there is no way there there’s a there’s a there’s a could right there’s a could there’s a perhaps for sure but um the way I want to preface it I wanted to talk about some guys who could be in contention who we haven’t really talked about yet that we really haven’t gone in depth about one of those guys is a facilitating point guard from France Nolan Troy nolan Troy throughout this process we viewed as a very small guard and he kind of played like it early in this international season the international combine came and turns out he’s 6’3 without shoes 6’4 with shoes but he’s got a 6’8 wingspan he’s only 175 pounds but he’s one of the best facilitators in the entire all of Europe he’s been terrific now he’s he’s 18 years old so he’s got a few you know bugaboos with turnovers like he leaves his feet to make passes sometimes but he’s got excellent vision and feel for the game at that age very crafty around the rim his three-point shooting was the major concern as the season went on he’s really started to hone in on that form and it’s getting better and better every single day um so Nolan Toué does a little bit of everything for France uh he has the ability to do some point of attack defense if he can put on some weight because 175 that’s the problem that’s really light right there has been a great a great French point guard um but he played totally different it sounds like than this one right tony Parker was not a three-point shooter mid-range specialist lightning quick uh you know great leader as it turned out but again totally different player so do we I just always I always say that because some what happens sometimes is we categorize certain players of certain countries the same way right just like in America every player is somewhat different in some way anyway go on to the second one yeah absolutely and and and Troy is really quick as well he’s got a nice left to right crossover or right to left crossover uh and he he’s shifty but he he’s definitely not nearly as quick as Tony you’re you’re right about that uh Danny Wolf’s another guy danny Wolf is 7 foot tall 250 pounds but he can facilitate uh he averaged in college uh let’s see here per 36 assist he averaged 4.2 assists per game 11.5 rebounds per game uh per 36 and he also averaged 15.6 six points per game by the end of the season his ball handling was so like early in the season his ball handling had him where he was being attacked by people on the perimeter like wings he would turn his back and have to like back down players a little bit protect the ball by the end of the season his ball handling was so good in the tournament he was handling the ball like a guard even against like tight pressure over half court by wings and things like that so he’s one of those guys that gives you lineup versatility facilitating playmaking rebounding and block shots and he’s still only 21 years old 611 7 foot tall with shoes with a 72 wingspan so he’s a guy I really wouldn’t be surprised if he if the Heat took him if he was there at 20 all right so and again I want to be clear on the reach thing here i know you don’t like that word where is he being projected right now so if you if you take a look at the the big board for example on Tankathon I don’t use Tankathon’s big boards all that much but if you look at where he’s being projected on Tankathon he’s 23rd okay i not a huge reach i mean if you’re talking about players who are in that kind of you know 20 to 27 and I think I mischaracterized this at the beginning because I talked about the Heat trading up for someone but this is actually more so the Heat staying put but taking a player that people are saying well he should be going 25th 27th 28th or something along those lines but Miami just likes the player yes um wasn’t Hakez somewhat like this i feel like people like there I know there was interest the Lakers had interest in Haimey there were others they obviously they they made a mistake with their pick because he’s not even there anymore no but there were players who um I don’t know from what I remember I was think oh Hawkins was supposed to go late 20s right yeah you’re right about that he was being projected in the 20s i know whenever I was going through it I identified him as a heat type of guy because of all the things he did similar to Jimmy and he he slotted into that you know Jimmy type role for sure the consensus had him going later in the draft going in into the 20s okay um you got another one oh yeah yeah yeah i got I got two more two more real quick go ahead um so the other guy that I I wanted to talk about is Adoro adue Theorough is a 66 guard it’s got humongous hands he’s a outstanding athlete 218 pounds with a 7 foot wingspan he can finish on the break dog point of attack defender will rebound for you he can block shots he can get steals attacks the cup gets to the free throw line the problem is he’s not a great shooter uh he’s not a very good shooter at all really um he only shot 68% from the free throw line in college but he’s a free throw merchant i mean he gets to the line a lot so if you can get a guy like him and again only 21 years old into the system where they can develop his shot and develop that skill set he does everything else you’d want and has all the measurables you’d want sounds like and and we talked about their need for athletes so obviously this is this is that and I’ve made the case that maybe they need to take more athletes and then kind of work with them on the more technical details of their shooting form which is something we’ve seen them be very good at in the past all right give us uh give us your fourth here i’ll give you the fourth and then the last thing I’ll do is tell you what I think if they ever did reach a couple of spots who it would be um so Hugo Gonzalez is the last guy i’ve talked about him a little bit before but he’s got that similar profile to Adu Thorough as as a really athletic wing um Hugo Gonzalez is the same size he’s 66 he has a long wingspan and he’s very very athletic when he finally got time in Europe one of the things that popped off the tape is defensively at 66’s ability to weak side shot block it was just unreal and so if you can harness that athleticism and develop his point of attack defense he’s a good enough shooter and has a great feel for the game he can facilitate he can get into the lane and score he can he’s crafty around the basket and he’s athletic enough to give you rim pressure so he’s another one of those guys that would be a modable piece of clay for Eric Spolstra and the guy they reach for is Ben Sanders okay but you’ve talked about him before though but would this be considered a reach because it sounds like he’s not even going to make it to them that’s why I think it’s a reach i think that’s the guy they’d have to trade up a few spots to jump up for instead of staying put and taking a guy maybe in the 20s you’re saying this is the player they would need to move up for again this Serif is someone who has playmaking chops right like this is good disgust right he’s 6’5 200 lb i’ve been watching the full games of the playoff games in Germany and he is the engine that drives that team every time he’s in the game they take the lead they take him out they lose the lead and he’s gotten better and better as the season gone on with his shot form he talked about it in an interview where his coach worked throughout the season about getting his elbow in getting more on balance and getting his hand under the ball to get that shot to be more consistent and it’s paying dividends in the playoffs he hasn’t even had a chance to work on that in like an off seasonason like it’s it’s been phenomenal growth from a 19-year-old and his body’s completely different from the beginning of the season to now like he’s rocked up a little bit yeah and we’ve seen the Heat uh do wonders with that too hoping they can do it with Web they’ve already done it with Yoic uh and if they get a guy I mean look they need playmaking i don’t think there’s any question we we’ve discussed that at Nauseium playmaking athleticism shooting pretty much everything uh the the size that they addressed last year uh so those are some players to watch um and and again we’ll go through some of these as we go forward we got less than three weeks to go as we’re also covering the finals i I I have one question for And just to ponder this a little bit uh and I I know what you might say because there is actually a player by this name uh who’s been that hard in this draft now it’s a great question and it’s not even a tough question because that player would be his little brother right he’s a 510 point guard outstanding playmaker he actually has a really nice mid-range jump shot like he can get that shot off against anybody it’s his three-point shooting that he’s really got to make sure um that he dials that in to be successful at the next level but he’s really a second round pick like he’s he’s not he’s he’s a late second rounder at that like he’s not going to be Well so is so so is Andrew i know that’s why I said he he was a late second round although that Hezi he step back he whatever the heck that was uh that he made halburn is going to get all the credit for that nobody’s going to remember the fact that Nemhard hit that shot over SGA uh while down six in game one yeah he’s he’s a kind type of guard that really could help Miami i was thinking of Rosier attempting that same thing and then I was like encourage that uh Adele we appreciate it more Miami Heat draft series episodes to come as well as uh episodes on team i know Greg and Alex are cooking something up and yes we’ll probably do 75 more episodes on Kevin Durant uh for those who follow HP basketball on Twitter he’s going to be on with me next week uh he had a report regarding the Suns and Durant that I want to discuss with him but again we’ll continue the draft coverage as we lead up to June 25th have a good one everybody

We know that the Miami Heat grade prospects differently from other teams. So who might they take that is projected to go after their 20th pick by most of the “experts”? Ethan Skolnick is joined by Digital Adel to discuss four of those, as well as one (Ben Saraf) who might require a move up.
