Why Phoenix Suns Hiring Jordan Ott Was A SMART Move

the Phoenix Suns are hiring Cleveland Cavaliers assistant coach Jordan Aught as their new head coach espn Sham Shirania tells us has been an NBA assistant since 2012 has a very good background in defense also been able to coach offensive side of the ball with the Lakers and a few other teams is a big player development coach and is a great communicator now he is coming from a coaching staff that is led by Kenny Atinson he was credited with helping Mr evan Mobley develop into the allstar and defensive player of the year that we saw him be this year now I just got back from Italy was at Adidas Euro Camp for since for almost five or six days and I wanted to speak on this so before we start today’s video let me hear your thoughts down below in the comment section what do you guys think of this and why first and foremost I thought this was the right hiring we knew that they were going to go ahead and get a firsttime head coach and to me this was something that they needed in what sense well I think they gone for the bigname splash the championship pedigree coach multiple times and it didn’t work what are you getting with Jordan and I want to hear do you guys like this pickup do you guys not i think it was the right one for the situation they’re they were at and previously he was with the Lakers and the Cavs and this is a guy with 13 plus years in coaching he’s actually someone who has Tom Isizo roots as he’s a former video coordinator for Tom Isizo and I I don’t know if you guys knew that and then becomes a top assistant in Cleveland and to me one of the bigger things because the new general manager Brian Gregory made it kind of clear that they were going to go for a young guy and the other thing is he’s a former Michigan State guy as well mattisbia former Michigan State guy as well so that’s something that stuck out to me but I think the fact that he’s a strong communicator and and what people told me when I spoke to media members briefed with the situation or covering the Suns mike Benhozer similar to Frank Vogle lost the locker room and I know everybody knows this when you’re a coach you’re not just coaching you’re stroking egos that’s sad it’s not sad it’s just part of the job like when you’re dealing with high-profile athletes you’re dealing with people that I don’t want to say have been pampered their whole life but you got to tell them basically what you want them to do in the correct way possible and it’s different for every individual you have your role players you know in the back of the roster guys who they know that they will do whatever is asked they’re the loyal soldiers they They’re there because usually they’re on minimum deals and we you know it’s or they’re on a rookie deal okay they’re trying to stick in the league now outside of that someone just texted me we got to be in hell right now so I I don’t know what that could entail because they also sent me other messages so if you saw me looking in the distance I just got I saw multiple messages sent the last message that I saw was we got to be in hell right now so I don’t know what that could mean either way being able to communicate because we heard the Bradley Beiel story where Mike Benhole just told Bradley Beal to play like Drew Holidayiday and I get what he was trying to tell him he was like “Look we need you to be you know a playmaker not just for yourself but mainly for your teammates and be a point of attack defender.” Because as someone who’s a Wizards fan growing up I Whoa we got to be in hell right now was a video of Stephen A smith talking about how he would resolve the Ukraine Russia conflict oh no not conflict war god I hate that I said that because we all know it was an invasion by Russia either way we’re not even going to hit into that it’s just the fact that Stephen Aid’s actually entertaining being president is blowing my mind don’t want that to happen either way Jordan odd what is he good he’s good at building relationships he’s someone that’s going to hold both the players and the coaching staff accountable and I kind of think I’ve said this before in the beginning of the the video or really the beginning not of this video but of this video series of the coaching search that they should have kept Kevin Young this whole time deon Booker wanted him and part of it was cuz he was a good player developer was had good schemes and he was a really good communicator so I think if he can emphasize being tough and accountable and try to build on the continuity of this roster as of right now it doesn’t seem like they’re going to be able to trade and if trade Kevin Durant and if they are going to be able to trade Kevin Durant it seems like they want the Houston Rockets to trade back their picks if not maybe try to get the Spurs because the Spurs can give them a package probably built around either Vel Kelvin Johnson Jeremy Sohan Malachi Bronn Blake Wesley doesn’t have to be all those guys but you can they they have parts that they can move and Jordan who is backed by Devin Booker as his top choice is huge for the locker room to buy in which again going back into the the Kevin Young thing if they had just hired Kevin Young not retain him as one of the most expensive assistants and then for him to leave the following year to BYU they wouldn’t have been in this position to begin with but at last that’s not what they did now he’s coming from a Cavaliers team that Kenny Atinson helped build you know that was what the top number one offense top 10 defense 64 wins and being able to come from a place es also having his time in Los Angeles and all his other stops he’s a guy who’s been able to adjust schemes to evolve to NBA trends and is clearly able to implement two-way systems as he has coached the defensive side of the ball with the Cavs coach the offensive side of the ball with other teams like the Lakers and this fits with the Phoenix Suns needs this was a team that missed the playoffs they were in the bottom half in offensive rating despite having Durant and Booker and you can say Beal and you know Royce O’Neal and Grayson Allen okay that there were players on this team that they should be better they were a bottom 10 defense they had no consistency they had no toughness at times even though they had brought in an addition and Nick Richards which helped their rim protection more so than it was when Yseph Nerkage was there also I heard crazy Yseph Nerkage info from like somebody in Europe either way the other thing is Ryan Dunn he’s a great perimeter defender you had guys Grayson Allen another one that were able to allow this team to at least be passable on defensive but most times they weren’t so Duro has a track record of elevating teams play on both ends of the floor he’s a system guy and the opportunity to build cohesion around a core of three scorers who can at least average every single night probably 70 points combined if they stick with that and have a defensive identity it’s going to be huge but the biggest thing is they’re going with a playercentric leadership type mentality under u I think the last couple coaches was my way or the highway coach as we saw with the bull bull not fighting leading to his benching and then Frank Vogle just kind of being laughed out of the room it seems but with Booker’s direct involvement stamping Jordan as his top choice shows the alignment between the coaching vision of the organization and the locker room because this will hopefully build a long-term cultural stability in the building and there was 15 plus candidates in the pool according to Sham Shirania which makes this a rigorous multi-stage process and we heard names like Johnny Bryan Quinn David Vizdale all put in there and the final interview was with Mattis Beia Josh Barlstein and Brian Gregory so why do I think this is going to work and we we have to give them the benefit of the doubt and that is Because that Jordan Audd is the forwardthinking communicative coach right i said that communicative or good skilled or wellskilled in communication i like that better jordan Aught is the forwardthinking wellskilled in communication coach that has I think a pragmatic approach and the experience to work with elite players and maybe create some cohesion between the locker room and the coaching staff that has clearly kept this team stuck backwards i believe his background fits exactly what the Suns need as they look to rebuild their identity connect with their stars and get back to the playoff form especially if they don’t do any trades with the issues like inconsistent defense and poor team chemistry plaguing them the past few years Jord gives Phoenix a real chance to improve both the culture and the oncourt execution that they have sorely lacked let me hear if you guys agree

The Phoenix Suns have officially hired Cleveland Cavaliers assistant coach Jordan Ott as their new head coach. After a competitive search that included multiple high-level candidates, Ott emerged as the top choice—earning the endorsement of Suns star Devin Booker. Ott brings over a decade of NBA coaching experience and was a key architect behind Cleveland’s top-ranked offense and elite defense this past season.

With Phoenix coming off a disappointing 36–46 campaign, Ott’s arrival signals a fresh start. In this video, Cyro Asseo breaks down why this hire makes sense, what Ott brings to the table, and how he can maximize the Suns’ All-Star trio of Booker, Durant, and Beal.

  1. As a Suns fan, underwhelming. Bryant seemed like the clear cut better choice, hard to ignore the MSU ties Ishbia keeps adding on. Feels like the whole hiring process was smoke and mirrors when Ott was always the guy.

  2. Quinn was more deserving then this msu dude. Plus what matters to be successful is having the right team & decision makers an owner who clearly doesn't see he's the issue this will not be good for any coach bt at least bring someone with more exps not a video guy that was 3 or 4 in the cavs coaching staff. Lol watch us be a lottery team for yrs bt with 0 picks yikes.

  3. Opinions on him are that hes an innovative guy that is good understanding the concepts necessary on both offense and defense. A very good development and culture guy and has completed a usmc bootcamp.

Setting the michigan state thing aside. This could be a positive hire for once, but how much will he get done with this super micro- managing front office?

  4. As a suns fan I knew he was a perfect fit Devin Booker wanted Jordan ott It was kind of obvious, I just said he’ll make relationships and be accountable with the players and coaching staff but we also need a figure out how to trade Kevin Durant get our draft picks back also trade Bradley Beal and build a team around Devin Booker I liked everything you said about the locker room and you mentioned a well skilled community coach that we should have.
