Perk says Jason Kidd should stay in Dallas as ‘Mavs are set up to win NOW’ 👀| First Take

the Knicks stunned the NBA when they fired head coach Tom Tibido after he led them all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals now the Knicks are looking for a new leader and one name they’re reportedly interested in is Maverick’s head coach Jason Kidd interesting what would you say is the more appealing job right now is it the Knicks or the Mavs me personally it’s the Mavs and I’m a Knicks fan and I can say that sincerely and the reason why I say that is a couple of reasons number one when you talk about Cooper Flag you’re talking about a freshman who was the national player of the year in history only Kevin Durant Anthony Davis and Zion Williamson were national players of the year as freshman let’s remember that the brother can play let’s give Let’s give love where it’s due they had a 1.8% chance to get the number one overall pick they lucked up and got that which took some of uh of the of the shrapnel the momentous criticism coming down upon uh Nico Harrison it took that off a little bit but I think that when you look at the New York Knicks compared to the Dallas Mavericks I’m looking at an Anthony Davis i’m looking at a Lively i’m looking at a Gaffford ty Kyrie towards ACL obviously he’s going to be out for most of next season but Coopa Flag certainly offsets that so we got to look at it from that standpoint here’s the biggest reason why I would say the Mavs instead of the Knicks because the Knicks gave away five first round picks for Mikuel Bridges four unprotected so the assets that you have to improve upon what you have done is not there i’m looking at Dallas you’re about to grab Cooper flag anthony Davis is going to be there kyrie eventually will be back assuming he exercises play option or they re up and sign him you know because I hope they resign him he seems happy there loves Nico he deserves his bag if he’s healthy Kyrie Irvin deserves his bag but either way you slice it they’ve got some pieces there where you look at it you say “Wait a minute they could do some things.” Because if Kyrie had been healthy and Anthony Davis had been assassinating a lot but if both of them had been healthy with Gaffin and Lively I got news for you they’d have made they’ have made noise throughout the West and if you look at OKC who’s the one team they had problems with whenever they faced them against them it was Dallas and so I’m looking at it from that standpoint this we can’t judge by this year they were just in the finals last year a lot of people felt if Luca played better defense who knows what they would have done against Boston last year even though I think Boston would have still won i’m just saying when you look at them and the pieces that they have I’m just looking at the New York Knicks having stripped yourself of those assets it’s got to be about assets it can’t just be about a gimpy call Anthony Towns with a stud like Jaylen Brunson with role players that are really good like Anna Nobi and Muel Bridges and Josh Hart it can’t just be about that i got to look to the future and see what you can do and the maneuverability that the Knicks lack i think Dallas automatically has be in a position to draft Cooper Flag with the number one overall pick that’s why I say Dallas uh more appealing job i I I’ll piggyback off of what you say i would say Dallas because they’re more of a in a win now moment like you you like their their roster is for winning now other other than Cooper Flag everybody is brought in to win in these next two to three years now the Knicks are in the East with that is wide open i hurt Jason Tatum for the entire year so we talk about next year i think that the Knicks are more appealing just for next year based off of what the East looks like with it being up in the air and making it to the Eastern Conference Finals this year and Dallas without Kyrie starting off the year it’s a little bit of a unknown just in that spot and then obviously with the history of Anthony Davis being injured it’s it’s it’s somewhat of a unknown every single year whatever team he’s on and then like I said Kyrie being out for maybe the entire year or or half year you just don’t know so the Knicks are in more prime position to win next year but in the next two to three years it’ll be dollars can I just say one thing before we jump in i feel like this is actually a hard question to answer because we don’t also know what the Knicks are going to do that’s why I like it we also know don’t we also don’t know what the Knicks can do right that’s why I like it i I’m agree with Keith i got to say the Knicks like far as pressure-wise right like playing in the guard and like having that pressure on you you have to embrace that and I think that for me choosing that spot is good like when you talk about dollars talk about the Mavericks like it’s a big market but who who really talking about the Mavericks winning anything in that loaded uh Western Conference final i mean Western Conference who’s talking about that when you look at the Knicks I feel like if they It’s so interesting because you don’t know what they’re going to do this summer but they have so many other pieces too they have a lot of assets when you talk about player-wise right when you can move some of those players they talking about obviously seeing what they going to do with Cat um but I think it’s the coaching part that I think will bring the Knicks to the to the top stage i I I think that the players they have with the East looking like how it looked they could get back to that same spot right like now starting to utilize the bench and utilize some of those pieces i think they can get back there with the right coach so if it was me I’m going to go to the Mecca i’m going to go to the top i’m going to go where the lights is the bright right i’m going to go where they want you to win and I’m going to look at this off season and say what can I really do to change this team around even if I want to change them around i don’t technically think they have to have big moves to get back to where they were i I don’t agree with I’ll throw this out for you number one we got to take into consideration the fact that they fell off defensively we got to take into account that Carl Anthony Towns looked a big gimpy and you had other cats questioning his toughness right which obviously compromised their defense you had reports coming out that the players questioned his defensive tenacity his defensive prowess which they felt compromised him assuming there’s any truth to that i didn’t report it a bunch of people reported it but it’s relevant right now because Tom Tibido’s gone okay so we got to take that into consideration right then we got to take into consideration Dallas in terms of the urgency to be relevant because you traded Luca Donuch ball handling i think people are starting to like forget that narrative a little bit though which narrative about the Luca ad don’t you think we focused on other season with all the changes that are Let me answer your question it’s totally wrong it’s totally wrong and here’s they’re saying the same thing again it’s totally wrong tell me educate me because he got hurt immediately that’s why I dial down when he’s on the basketball court they’re like “What the hell you going to do we left We lost Luca because of you you better show up.” That’s how they looking at him kyrie’s a different animal everybody talk about the ball handling but they forget about his basketball IQ they forget about the fact that this man is a champion that the brother don’t fade in big moments kyrie shows up and so you know expectations going to come because of him and Anthony Davis and then you add Cooper flag by the way as a college player they marketing this brother had the American flag behind him i mean this this is what I’m talking about here that’s going on in Dallas right now cooper flag white with the name flag with the American flag behind it talk about marketability so I’m just telling you right now expectations are on Dallas’s shoulder as well to win immediately just like you talk about the New York Knicks got some expectations Dallas got some expectations that they have to live up to make no mistake about that i think that added pressure that added microscope and remember the one team we’re talking about is OKC that looks That’s the creme de la creme right well they had a problem who knocked them out last year who beat him twice this season with Luka i’m saying the one game they beat him in regular season without Luca yes he did kyrie beat him three kyrie did it do you think there’s going to be a little more pressure on the Knicks too if Boston breaks up that they have to capitalize on that oh for sure boston is going to break up they have that two two $300 million play so hell yeah yeah so what I’m saying so there’s not that like Goliath in the East but remember there’s even more parody cleveland messed up this year they had a big time regular season they messed up in the postseason detroit is coming oh yeah detroit is coming ivy Stewart didn’t play against the New York Knicks what if they were available you got Orlando’s nothing to sneeze at got ped Indiana’s here so I’m like wait a minute ain’t no damn guarantee Indiana knocked the Knicks out the last two years we can’t sit up there and look at the Knicks ahead of them all right real quick before we roll let’s go around the horn best fit for the Knicks at head coach i’m going Mike Malone being being as though where he just came from the all-time winningest coach in Denver history he was a coach for the Knicks in 20 2001 and 2005 he’s from Queens so he know what it like to be a New Yorker and and being a part of the Knicks and he just was with a great duo in in Murray and Joker you take him over to the Knicks he’s going to implement implement the exact same thing and he’s gonna have success the exact same way yeah to me I don’t like I can’t put a name on it right like I’m I’m not about like having a big name what I will say is I would kind of take what Boston did right with that Brad Stevens situation where took Brad Stevens put him in the front office and bring in Eay Uduko right it wasn’t Yeah it wasn’t like the the big time signing it was that the effect that he can have on the locker room and I think that’s big for players that we don’t understand is like yes Tom Tibido is a great coach but he has his style that he’s not breaking for anybody when you get a coach in there that’s well respected by the players that can well be well respected by his work ethic and well respected from a city like New York i think that changes the locker room when you can pull the best out of players by being able to relate being able to talk to them instead of just being like this is my style right the game is changing everything is changing you have younger coaches coming into the game and players are reacting better right you look at OKC they have a young coach and you see how well they’re responding to him right i think that it’s not about the big name i think it’s about getting identifying a guy that has respect around his league that can get his guys to play for him and get his guys to be able to talk to him and communicate him so you can get the best out of the players in Stephen what’s your name well first of all the name is obviously Mike Malone he just won a championship a couple of years ago i’m gonna always mention the name Mark Jackson because he’s been away from the game for a decade as a coach this man was responsible for building Golden State before Steve Kerr was brought in and took over and piggybacked off of that and ascended the four championships no doubt but Mark Jackson starred at Bishop Lachland mark Jackson starred at St john’s University mark Jackson was a rookie of the year playing for the New York Knicks mark Jackson was a pre-minent voice on the NBA and he knows and feels and vibes with New York he’s a native so a voice for the New York Knicks where we ain’t got to worry about hearing from James Dolan who hides from us or Leon Rose the president who hides from us got APBs out for their asses we ain’t got to worry about somebody like that because you got somebody like Mark Jackson but I understand that that’s that’s that’s pretty much I I doubt that will happen there is no one that can question the credentials of a Jason kid but you certainly can’t question the credentials of a Mike Malone because he’s a champion so is the Dallas Mavericks job better than the New York Knicks and we don’t know what the Knicks are i would say for Jason Kidd it is i would say for Jason Kidd and his personality and who I’ve known him to be i’m not sure New York New York ain’t for everybody and look Jay Kid played here in New Jersey i get it lived in the city loves the city obviously has a great relationship with a lot of people here in the New York area i’m just I I think the Dallas team is a better team than the New York Knicks okay and I I get the fact that the East is wide open i don’t know if the Knicks can land Giannis i I don’t know what other assets the Knicks can bring to the table i’m sure JCK would have a huge say in that with Leon Rose and Worldwide West but KP and say I’m looking at the makeup of the Dallas Mavericks you talk about them getting Kyrie Irving back Anthony Davis Klay Thompson PJ Washington the the bigs that they have the versatility that they have and I understand that the West is loaded but if you’re Jay Kid I’m I’m staying put i’m right here look I got no one free no income tax number one keep money in your pocket keep your money in your pocket number two I got a lot of weapons I could play with and I know the East I don’t know what I’m dealing with and and and look I I like the Knicks the Knicks is a great opportunity but why am I leaving a wizard in the game of basketball why am I leaving leaving a sharpshooter why am I leaving somebody that can get me 20 and 15 every night or every other night even if it’s there to get to the playoffs with other additional pieces to get me there i’m staying my ass right in Dallas i ain’t going nowhere it’s Dallas go ahead Perk it’s It’s not even close i’m with Jay Will it’s the Mavs look the Mavs the Mavs are set up not only to win now because with healthy with this roster with no moves being made for his trades they’re still they would be the top two seed the number two seed behind the Oklahoma City Thunder going into next season hands down then you add Cooper Flag you don’t get a Cooper often and then you’re talking about a guy how old is he 19 years old you talk about a guy 19 year old that’s that’s re that’s ready to play now at a championship level so now he comes in and he don’t have to be the man he can actually he can take his time and grow because you have Kyrie Irving you have Anthony Davis and then when Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving when they times time run up you built for the next 10 years with this guy as your franchise player so absolutely i’m the uh if I’m Jay Kid I’m staying with the Mavs i don’t even entertain the Knicks especially with Cooper Flag being go pro uh probably getting drafted well getting drafted to the Dallas Mavericks well in our number one I already articulated that I agree with the both of you uh when you talk about Cooper Flag national player of the year that’s Kevin Durant as a freshman Anthony Davis uh Zion Williamson only three people in the collegiate history that were national players of the year as freshman so we know what Cooper Flag brings to the table here’s what I would say there’s only one reason we’re talking about the possibility of Jason Kid coming to New York new ownership in Dallas it ain’t Mark Cuban no more and so now if you have an owner in Dallas who you’re not vibing with and I don’t I know none of this i didn’t ask J Kid or Nico or anybody about this i’m just speculating but if you have a new ownership group and the impression is money money money as opposed to doing what it takes to win if you got rid of Luca and indeed that was a decision that came from up top that you didn’t want we don’t know that’s true we’ve heard multitude of stories we know that Nico Harrison’s been taking most of the hits what role did Jason Kid play in that or lack thereof what cache did he have in that decision being made or lack thereof you know that with Mark Cuban you knew exactly where you stood he had been there for ages you knew where he stood what he wanted etc what his expectations were with the new group it’s a question mark and so when I look at it from that standpoint I hear Mark Cuban coming out saying he wouldn’t have made the deal when I see Don Nelson being honored by the coaches association and he’s wearing Luca’s new shoes and said that he did it just to make sure he brought awareness to the fact he didn’t agree with the decision either and he know what we know what he’s meant to the Dallas Mavericks franchise in the past you get the impression that the ownership in Dallas might be more problematic than we’ve been let on to believe so that’s the only thing that would make sense because from a basketball perspective a Kyrie returning eventually and Anthony Davis a lively a gaffred being there potentially a PJ Washington as well knowing that you got Cooper Flag as the number one overall pick that’s going to be the face of your franchise for for the future knowing all of that is in place and to be thinking about departing for the New York Knicks the only thing that makes sense to me is that ownership i’m not vibing [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause]
