Who (And What) Has The Most Value To The Dallas Mavericks? | DLLS Mavs Podcast
what are the most valuable assets that the Mavericks have going into this off seasonason plus the latest on Mavericks head coach Jason Kid with our very own Mark Stein all that and more coming up next on the DLS Mavs podcast [Music] [Music] [Music] hey what’s up DLSS Mavs Nation it’s your man Kevin Gray alongside Mavericks beat writer Tim Ko Mavericks analyst Bobby Krell and our national NBA insider Mark Stein we of course are DLLS Mavs what are the most valuable assets that the Mavericks have going into this off season plus the latest when it comes to Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd and when Cooper Flag is going to be making his visit to Dallas Texas appreciate all of you joining us here on DLL sports hopefully you had a nice weekend and we’re ready to get started on what is going to be a busy next couple of weeks for us here at DLLS Mavs as we get that much closer to the NBA draft on June 25th where of course the Mavericks are expected to take Cooper flag tim Ko what’s going on how was your weekend it was lovely it was lovely survived the storms quite frankly I think the Storms were more scared of me than I was of them so never really end out um I had a great weekend got to see the whole family got to hang out with some friends uh completed another nuzlocke of a different Pokemon game this time um really good stuff really good stuff had some great food watched some good basketball good good stein we know you had a busy weekend how are you guys i’m just glad to be here wasn’t looking good last night so basically you know Don Nelson won the Chuck Daily Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Coaches Association they always hand that award out before game two of the finals rick Carlilele always makes a special trip to the finals to hand that award out but didn’t have to make a special trip because he’s coaching in these finals for the second time in the history of the award rick Carlile was actually at the finals and so when I found out Nelly won I did a big story on it but I was like I I have to attend this i have to like this is you know Don Nelson doing a press conference at age 85 he just turned 85 in May i was like I have to go to this so I made arrangements to just and and you know I’m a diva so of course I can’t drive to Oklahoma City can’t can’t stay off my phone for for 6 hours total so take a take an AM flight to OKC had a flight scheduled back home at 8:30 so I wasn’t even going to stay for the game cuz I got to be back in studio for DLS at noon so and right before right during the press conference because of all the storms the weather flight canled get put on another flight that flight is canceled so then they’re like “We can’t get you home till Tuesday.” But luckily through some resourcefulness and some help from some very kind friends I was able to get in a car finally got back at 4:00 a.m and able to miss the show cuz I know Super Kev would have my head on a platter if I was not in studio today to answer all of his questions about the coach and Cooper flag and on and on so I made it i made Well we appreciate all of your efforts to get here and we do have a lot to talk about today and by the way hopefully all of you are safe and sound from the storms that were from last night uh and going forward from there so all the best to everyone who experienced uh whether it be storm damage or anything else hopefully everyone is okay uh it was pretty scary last night as far as the storms are concerned uh but gentlemen let’s get into it because we are just about two a little over two weeks away from the NBA draft in June 25th in New York City where the Mavericks of course have the number one overall pick we’ve got a few weeks before free agency begins as well and we are that much closer to the official beginning of the NBA offseason which gets us to this conversation what are the Mavericks best assets heading into this off season an important one where there’s going to be some roster movement but also acquiring a number one pick in Cooper flag let’s get into it because they’ve got a lot of things to consider in terms of their business is Tim Ko what are the valuable assets the most valuable assets the Mavericks currently have right now going into this off season yeah I I I’ll speak for all of us number one is the number one overall pick that they have in the upcoming draft aka Cooper Flag that is the most valuable uh asset uh most valuable thing that Dallas owns as a organization that they have available to trade they’re not going to trade it they’re going to draft Cooper flag but that’s that’s number one i I think number two is where it gets interesting and it’s it’s Anthony Davis or it’s Derrick Lively and it’s interesting because different organizations are going to put different values on it uh you know there are a lot of organizations who are not interested in a player like Anthony Davis at this point of his career uh based off where those teams are in their rebuilding cycles and so yeah they’re just not going to put as much value onto it there’s going to be play you know teams that look at 21-year-old uh Derek Lively and say that is actually a player that we rate and value much more i I think the answer is Anthony Davis uh you know he’s 32 he has uh injury questions certainly uh but but he’s a top 10ish player i I don’t think there’s anybody doubting or questioning that uh it’s just a matter of you know I I do think and I’ve said I I think it’s a little bit more difficult than you know if Dallas were in the business they are not if they were in the business of going and trying to find a trade partner for him might be a little trickier than you know what it seems on the surface but there is no question that Anthony Davis you know to the right organization uh and to Dallas as they try to win is is a is immensely valuable talented NBA player uh you know you’re probably you know if you if you just if If you’re going to go by like first round picks that’s kind of the the currency uh for for what we’re looking at i do think it’s Anthony Davis and then Derek Lively that’s my top three uh let’s stop down there and and see if everybody agrees i agree yeah I don’t disagree with number one and number two number three is where I have a little bit of difference but we’ll get into that here in just a second um well who’s your number three i have Daniel Gaffford as number three oh wow um the reason why I don’t have Derek Lively there is I feel like Dererick Lively at this at least for me is untouchable uh as far as who should be available to trade uh if you’re the Dallas Mavericks I think you’ve got a bright future with Lively at the center position i think there’s still a lot more growth for him to be able to do here and I would love to see him remain in a Dallas Maverick uniform uh for years to come gaffford you’ve got a surplus in terms of your big men right now with Anthony Davis and Lively and Gaffford as well uh and now you’re gonna be adding Cooper Flag to the mix as far as his position is concerned too so if you’re going to need some guard help I think Gaffer would be the one that if you’re going to have to part with one of them Gaffer would be the one to help you potentially acquire a starter in terms of a guard potentially so I think I think the Mavs really don’t like it’s so funny because there is so much discussion about will they trade Gaffford will they trade PJ this is only their preference maybe something prevents itself that the Mavs have to act i don’t think they want to trade either one i really don’t it’s hard to trade Gaffford because Lively as much as we all love him hasn’t been able to stay on the floor enough and has to prove that he can and PJ you know I think they would like if they can to see how it all snaps together first but again the reality is other teams want both of these guys and the Mavs have other needs on their team we know all about the holes they have in the back court so I’m not sitting here saying they won’t be traded because the calls are coming in for Gaffford and PJ whether the Mavs want to field them or not i just think their preference is they would love to find a way to not have to surrender either one i just don’t know if that’s practical that’s interesting because they’ve got a lot in terms of the big men available that they could potentially uh part with i know a lot of Mavericks fans who have been online over the weekend do not necessarily want to move on uh from Daniel Gaffer i’ll name my last team well again just before you go on like so what if you trade Gaford and then Lively has another season like he just had then then where are you come on down Kai Jones no no and look Dwight Mark they need to find a way to to bring Kai Jones back that would be helpful because he did look good here and they like him and he showed some stuff and it would be good to have him as as an emergency big if they can work that out but um it’s not ideal kai Jones is not exactly a defense wins championships player though no not quite well I mean you’re just talk you’re looking at him as stop gap in case for sure Lively is injured uh the last two I’ll name real quick uh before I get to you know Tim to finish up and then for Bobby uh I’m going to go with PJ Washington number four and I’m going to go out of the box on my number five one actually I’m going to go with Jason Kidd uh at number five um because depending on what happens he could net you a first round pick from New York so that’s the spirit there’s some value there uh it serves as a Jason kid if he decides so the coach comes to studio and now you’re just ready to give him up for a first that’s why he’s so valuable i mean it’s part of your fault too because you started all this fought who won’t you know fully put the story to bed it’s not the five players we want to see gone it’s the five players that could get us the most and J Kid because he came on our show he is now Was he involved in coaching rumors before coming on the DLS Match podcast also just the just the uh the act of coming on the DLS show I think boosts value yes league for sure but that would be my number five I would go with Jason Kidd because I think there is value there uh if you’re going to get out of the box in terms of some uh team building down the road there I’ I’d say PJ and then debate debate between the uh 2031 first round pick i think it’s I think it’s Naji though i think Naji is the fifth most valuable i don’t know if you get a the knife i don’t know if you get a first rounder for him but how do we We We still have not had Naji in studio how is that possible it’s completely figure that out completely i don’t know if he spends the offseason in Dallas but we got to work on Doesn’t matter he’s got a phone we got to work on that yeah I know but we we want him in studio he’s got devices we don’t want him We don’t want him zoomed in we want him on That’s right we We want We want Naji in in the Bobby seat yeah i I’ I’d have to think that you know two years left on his deal at about 9 million uh for a guy who is happy coming off the bench and would come off every single team’s bench i don’t I I think all 29 teams are interested in a Nagi Marshall would be interested in him uh you know at the right in the right deal uh is there a team he wouldn’t play for i don’t think so who yeah no every team every team in the league could use him uh at any stage of their trying to winess um number one obviously the number one pick AD Lively uh number four Kyrie Irving still extremely valuable player especially depending on the kind of contract that he signs this summer um I left him off just because he’s technically Yeah he soon will not be on the team yeah but when when he reups that number will be uh Yeah well yes um when he resigns yeah he will be very valuable yes uh PJ Washington number five daniel Gaffford leads off my honorary mention and then it’s the Lakers pick and then the Mavs pick and then Naji and then Max Christie that’s how I round out my I went all the way to 10 you challenged us to go to five but I decided to double it okay so you had Lively at number three lively at number three okay wow third most valuable map why Lively there at three great contract great player very young has excelled in the playoffs switchable big with upside would you consider him So you would not consider him an untouchable for the Mavericks uh there’s a very short list of players I would trade him for okay okay who would those players be i’m interested who would those players be uh well it depends on when you ask me after the finals last year I would have said I don’t know if straight up I would have traded him for Deon Booker uh that list is probably longer now than it was after the finals just because he’s been so hurt but yeah i mean if you’re not if you haven’t been an all-star recently then I’m not really interested in giving you lively for that guy okay so of those assets that we’ve named here that are valuable to the Mavericks which one are you willing to part with if need be which one of those as you consider the ones that we’ve named that you’re willing to say you know what if I need to let it go then that’s the one I need to let go any of them except for I’m not trading the number one pick and I’m only trading AD if I’m like if either my future is set or I’m getting younger and somehow at least not worse okay um but that is that’s very tough it’s very tough so otherwise I’m open for business man always listening always trying to get better yeah i don’t I don’t think the team’s at a in a in a position where anybody should be considered untouchable outside of Cooper Flag um yeah that’s that it’s just Cooper Flag because Cooper Flag just does you know it’s there’s so much flexibility and and and you know just you could take this team any direction right now and again I’m not saying that you know there’s a difference between a player being available to be traded and a player you know being shopped it’s just a matter of bring me the deal bring me the offer and I will hear them out and we can go from there uh shout out to Thiago our Argentinian brother um he’s watching us live from Argentina let’s go M so shout out to Thiago happy to have you here in the uh the DLS mass podcast uh make sure you like comment and subscribe while you’re here uh as well a lot of decisions are going to be made for this team going forward because they’ve got decisions to make when it comes to obviously Kyrie Irving his player option the Mavericks holding the number one overall pick are they going to try to acquire a potential starting guard uh to help this team until Kyrie Irving gets back but most importantly how does this team move forward to get themselves in a position to be able to get to the playoffs next year uh knowing what kind of timeline this team is on all that we will be discussing throughout the course of the next several days and weeks to come uh as this Maverick’s front office has work to do let’s take our first break here on the DLS Mavs podcast when we come on to get the latest on Jason K and when Cooper Flag is going to be making his official visit to Dallas shout out to Michael in the chat uh great wishes from Germany uh Mavs rule so shout out to Michael watching us live uh from Germany thank you so much for hanging out with us here on the DLS Mavs podcast last night the Oklahoma City Thunder evened up their NBA final series against the Pacers at one game a piece with a blowout victory where five guys had at least 15 points last night led by SGA’s performance for the Oklahoma City Thunder as that series will move to Indiana on Wednesday for game number three but before the game a statement was made by former Dallas Mavericks head coach Don Nelson Markstein who broke the news yesterday uh that the former coach was going to be in attendance receiving the Chuck Daily Lifetime Achievement Award he decided to make a statement when it came to how he felt about a certain trade that happened on February 1st here’s what Don Nelson had to say prior to yesterday’s game number two and Luca too uh my dear friend as a matter of fact I want everybody to know I’m wearing Luca’s shoes his new shoes uh from Nike just just got on the market and I’m wearing them in protest for the trade from Dallas i think it was a tremendous mistake by the Dallas franchise to trade him and uh I want I want everybody to know that so Don Nelson of course spent eight seasons as the Mavericks head coach second all time and wins second in all time games coached as well left his home from Maui for the first time I believe in seven years to visit Oklahoma City to receive that award mark Stein and he decided to make a statement when it came to Luca Donis and the trade of course i thought you want Don’t you want to talk about the Carile’s laugh more than the state we’ll get to that in a second we’ll get to that look you guys know I am an incurable nostalgist and an incurable sap so I love the whole thing like I said I I had I was not planning to go to any of this finals i found out about Nelly winning this award broke the story Sunday morning did an interview with him you know I would love if if our friends in chat would would go read the story i think you know Nelly for me s like it was it was one of the best press conferences I’ve ever been to i think you should watch the if you are a Mavs fan you should go watch the whole thing because Nelly explained for example you he was always known as this proponent of small ball nelly ball Nelly Ball Nelly Ball he explained it better in that press conference than I’ve ever heard him explain it and this is someone I’ve talked to a thousand times like he actually wrote wrote it in a story for the Players Tribune several years ago that I missed i I didn’t even see that that story until over the weekend and um he wrote that story in I think 2016 but he explained he he went into this long explanation about how when the when he played for the Celtics Red Hourback would make the Smalls play the bigs and the Smalls always won and he’s he talked about the bigs they can’t dribble they can’t pass we could never beat him in a half court game but in a fullcourt game they could never beat us and that’s where he basically he was coaching positionalist basketball before we ever talked about it like that and just his philosophy was get the best players on the court but I mean before that answer about Luca cuz I you know I wrote about the protest the in my story so I think people knew that was coming and he he had a pair of Luca Luca fours gone the gone fishing colorway and you know if you’re old enough to remember Nelly was famous in Milwaukee for wearing fish ties so the the shoes were also a nod to that but right before the Luca answer he spent two minutes just explaining all the tricks and things they did to try to stash Durk and hide Durk in the leadup to drafting Durk just selfishly for me again nostalgic sap it was like a this is your life thing for me because all I could do to hear Nelly now at 85 unfiltered just saying we tried to hide him we begged Holar not to let him play you know we hid him in Donniey’s basement he says all the things now and then I but all I can do is think back to the things he said at the time and like selfishly speaking you know on the Sunday before that draft I had a story in the morning news that the Mavericks were strongly considering drafting Dirk Nitzky and unfortunately the Morning News archives aren’t even on like you can’t even find that story online i wish I I wish it was there because I would love to just you know click to it and and show it around because I I basically wrote be before the draft that that Nitzky was I don’t remember exactly how I said it but he was he was at the top of their list and Nelly told me “You’re wrong we’re not drafting that guy you’re But he was.” And then like after the d after the draft I said “Thought you weren’t taking him thought you didn’t.” And he was just like “It’s draft time don’t ever believe anything I say.” And it just like the whole if you if you are a Mavs fan if if you didn’t watch it go on the NBA app watch the whole thing you just get a window into what a character he was and like I just I was pinching myself cuz I am so spoiled like Tim Ko Tim McMahon was there in in the in the crowd with me you know the Tims didn’t get the chance to cover Nelly they weren’t they weren’t quite old enough like he like he made plenty of mistakes he never won a championship as a coach he gets a lot of criticism for that he got in trouble for 5,000 things you know both he and his son left the franchise in Acarone i mean there’s all kinds of things you can throw at Nelly but just like selfishly speaking like to get to cover these guys was I was so lucky i mean I’m just beyond lucky to to cover these they were they were open book characters and and that’s how Nelly was last night and I actually got to see him a few for a few minutes before the thing and I and I he’s wearing the Lucas and like I I’m just thinking God knows what you’re going to say at this thing and I’m like you’re gonna be the first coach to get fined at the Chuck Daily press conference like only the Nelson brothers you know Donniey’s in the front row only the Nelson brothers could turn the Chuck Daily Lifetime Achievement Award into a spectacle where as as I think Super Kevin Gray said on Twitter Carile is openly laughing diabolically 30 minutes before a finals game that was Isaac Harris who made the diabolical part i called it ruthless because it was to me hella ruthless that Carlile at the exact moment that he’s talking about the Luca Trey carile laughs you know gives that sheepish you know laugh as he’s sitting there of course formerly having head coached the uh the Dallas Mavericks Bobby Krillin but uh your thoughts on what you’ve heard yeah you’re the Nelly guy so he’s as a Nelly fan like oh I love Nelly man got to watch up growing that i got to grow up watching that guy coach uh one of my earliest basketball memories actually is uh when the the Bulls came to Dallas in 1998 that was the last dance season the Mavs beat them cedric Sabalos hits this miraculous corner three jumper to force overtime tony Ko missed a layup to win the game mavs end up going on to win in overtime and after the season the Mavs sent out a VHS to ticket holders and just random fans I guess uh of Nelly breaking down the film from that game and Nelly’s like making fun of his own guys he’s making fun of the Bulls it was hilarious and informative and helped me really fall in love with basketball and then of course they get Dirk and everything else but you know the thing about Nelly obviously he you mentioned he left the Mavs um under you know maybe not the best of circumstances and he talked about that last night he he he said “We didn’t resign Steve Nash and my my relationship with Mark Cuban was never the same.” The same thing he’s just such an open book and he’s obviously more now you know retired and he’s not coming back but but even covering him dayto day like the first time Tanner and I worked together on an essay was at was at Ballet Sports Southwest we put together an an essay when right before Dirk’s jersey retirement i don’t even know how Tanner found this footage i had never even seen the footage tanner found footage of Dirk’s first day in the Baylor Center they had just drafted him and the Mavs were gonna and Carile talked about this last night one of the one of the great things there was all this chatter that if Durk was drafted he might go back to Germany he might not play in the NBA and the way Carile described it last night was that teams believed it and that was why more teams weren’t willing to draft because Durk slipped all the way to nine but the Mavs draft him and then they had to bring Dirk to Dallas to lobby him to not stay in Europe and come right to to Dallas as a rookie durk landed they went straight to the Baylor Center tanner finds this footage from one of the local news channels we’re like I’m on the floor right next to Donnie just like getting to watch this from literally on the court like steps i’m And so like that’s where I say I was so spoiled and it was a just a different era and I you know Tim’s generation and younger I feel sorry because they don’t get the access that I got the coach that you cover is a little different than you i just again like it’s I I I know how I know how lucky and blessed I’ve been and it was that press conference was just a show and every Mavs fan owes Nelly a lifetime’s worth of gratitude because he and Donnie and that regime brought Durk to Dallas and Durk would tell you Durk became Durk because Don Nelson gave him the license to play at the three-point line and bomb away when Dirk came into the league it was Carl Malone’s league it was Jawan Howard’s league it it was Tim you know Tim Duncan was had had just joined but it this was bruising power forwards these are all the guys that Dirk Chris Weber like it that’s what a fourman was and Nelly gave him the license nelly saw Dirk and thought this guy can revolutionize the four position we’re going to play him in a completely different way and Durk has said a zillion times that if I don’t end up with Don Nelson as my coach I probably don’t get the green light to play like that and become Dirk Nitzky and like I said the the the stuff Nelly said about Luca and and the Mavs that’s what got the attention but if you are a basketball nerd the stuff he said about small ball the stuff he said about there are a thousand small guards who can shoot the bleep out of the ball and I just wanted to get as many of those guys out on the court why he made Paul Pressie a point forward like if you are a basketball nerd there was a lot of stuff like that in this press conference that isn’t getting clipped and and shown around today that that’s great stuff really really education what he said about Luca and about how you need to keep your great players and stuff like that’s more than just uh being an edge lord like Mark you said uh they didn’t bring back Steve Nash and then before the end of the next season he was out of here nelly was not the coach anymore with like 15 20 games left in the season yeah retired Johnson on a Saturday in I will never forget on a Saturday in March just all of a sudden he’s gone he steps down and a few months before that or I guess a year or two before that in ‘ 03 Durk comes down with a mysterious injury in the conference finals against the San Antonio Spurs and the story goes I wasn’t there so tell me if I’m wrong story goes Cuban wanted him back in the series he wanted him on the floor Nelly was like over my dead body buddy Nelly won that battle dirk did not come back the Mavs did not win that series they lost in game six uh I hate you forever Steve Kerr uh because of that but uh Nelly put Dirk’s career and Durk safety over what probably could have been a title maybe would have been a title and that was the other thing that unraveled the Cuban Nelly relationship you know it was losing Nash and then that whole he’s a man of his words when Nelly says you keep your great players you believe him because uh he kept Dirk out of a playoff series and then retired after they let Steve Nash go that dude knows he knows talent he knows ball riveting stuff from Don Nelson last night who received the Chuck Daily Lifetime Achievement Award ahead of game two uh of the NBA Finals i’m sure he will be comfortably back in Maui and uh enjoy the rest of his already left this morning enjoy the rest uh of his retirement uh but last night definitely put on the show before game two of the NBA finals let’s take our next break here on the DLLS Mavs podcast when we come back we dial up the Stein Line with our national NBA insider Mark Stein the latest on Jason Kidd when Cooper Flag is coming to Dallas and more one of the best basketball teams of that era with Nash Nitzky starting yep top 10 nick Van Axel playing a ton of hits quick did you guys see Quick your boy Chill over Chill was up on a podcast with my guy Nick Vanex how did that happen i got scooped dls Mavs we got to get Quick in here chill on his way back from Atlanta after having a good weekend so we’ll we’ll have to ask him about that a little bit later on uh this week we got some questions though for our guy Mark Stein it’s time to dial the Stein Line here on the DLS Mavs podcast you can always find our guy Mark on X at the Stein Line where you had a busy weekend you and your buddy Jake Fischer dropping a bunch of news in your notebooks uh let’s start obviously with the most pressing issue around here when it comes to the Mavericks head coach in the Knicks pursuit of Jason Kid what is the latest when it comes to Jason Kid the Mavericks and the New York Knicks trying to poach Kid from Dallas it is a very bizarre dance i mean the Knicks interest in Jason Kidd is undeniable and it mostly stems from the fact that he and Jaylen Brunson have a pre-existing working relationship that went pretty damn well but are they going to actually act on it they have not to this point they have not formally requested permission and it’s it is a the whole thing is such an interesting situation i’m sure it’s happened and I just don’t remember but every coach that the Knicks have been linked with seriously is under contract there are some very good coaches who are available who are free agents michael Malone Mike Brown Taylor Jenkins were all fired during the season mike Budenhozer was fired the day after the season frank Vogle is a Mavs consultant but he’s also essentially a free agent i mean I just gave you five names of coaches are available who are available and three of them have won championships nobody’s talking about those guys the names you hear Jason Kidd Emma Udoka Chris Finch and so exactly how the Knicks are going to proceed if they’re going to take the formal step are they just going to try to do this via back channels which we know happens often in the NBA it’s not it’s not clear how this is going to resolve but the two ways that this could have been shut down at this point would have been for the Mavericks either on or off the record to put out some sort of if the MA if the Knicks ask they will get a no which has not happened in a definitive way but also the Knicks the Knicks could have whispered “We’re not going to pursue Jason Kid.” And they haven’t done that either like you saw over the weekend the news came out that Jay Wright made it clear that he is quote staying retired and then there was instantly reporting from New York-based reporters that the Knicks knew this leon Rose and Jay Wright are close the Knicks never really looked at Jay Wright as a serious candidate anyway that kind of reporting could have emerged about Coach Kid and it hasn’t to this point maybe it will but it’s it’s it’s a very it’s it’s a very unusual situation and you also have to remember these are two teams that don’t love each other because of the way the Brunson thing went down and that still lingers so I I really don’t know how it’s going to play out i I see David Mason’s asking the question you know I know a lot of people throw out that um that presumption that this is just kid angle play i don’t I don’t think so like if you if if if any one of us were coaching the Mavs or any team the Knicks are known for like if if the Knicks are interested in you why would you why would you not welcome that like you you would welcome it i mean they’re paying Tibido 30 million not to coach so I think any coach who was g getting interest from New York would welcome it i don’t think I don’t think he’s seeking it out i haven’t gotten any sense that he’s trying to move on he I mean he was just in here two weeks ago talking about Cooper Flag and and the Mavs have deployed him as essentially the spokesman on all things Cooper Flag since they won the lottery i mean he he’s visited us he went on Fox 4 with with Mike Ducey and Sam Ganon i think he went on your old station 105.3 went on the Dan Patrick show i mean he’s done he’s done a a media tour talking about flag so so let me ask you real quick because there was some reporting from The Athletic this morning that maybe Kid has not been you know too thrilled about the idea of being the quoteunquote spokesperson for this team i I saw that and look there was the one game where he didn’t do media and he was undeniably frustrated and we you know we covered that at length of time there’s no question that night but he he every coach for every NBA team is the spokesman this is the modern NBA the coach is the spokesman and that’s one reason why coaching salaries are so high you can’t not want to be the spokesman if you’re you’re a head coach so I I don’t really buy that sure and I think the fact that Sorry I’m talking myself into coughs as I always do by shouting um the mics are really good i know i can’t It It has nothing to do with the mic it’s just It’s just Mark’s nine um he he again he has been doing all the talking since they won the draft lottery because he’s always the spokesman so I don’t believe that and I I would say that would be one of the appeal like Tom Tibido had to be the spokesman for the Knicks because their front office never does any meetings leon Rose has not Leon Rose hasn’t talked for years i don’t even remember how long it’s been since he and so whoever they hire has to be someone who can do that and I would imagine that’s another box that that Jay Kidd would check but how the Knicks are going to proceed I was just at the finals everybody’s asking me it’s very unclear because I would imagine and just help me out Kada you can also help me out here as well if the Knicks are calling the Mavericks to talk to Jason Kid they’re not necessarily I would think calling to interview him you’re calling to hire him for that job you know what his credentials are you know what he is as a head coach you’re calling to talk about dollars and years and him coming to New York i would imagine that would be a very short conversation relatively speaking in terms of what they’re actually I think that’s a reasonable presumption i don’t know that it’s exactly how it would go but I mean it is certainly one of the plausible scenarios and it could be that they’re just not that far enough down the road so it’s a it’s a very slowm moving process to this point but it’s the Knicks it’s the only coaching vacancy in the league and it will continue to be talked about until one of those two things happens to shut it down or they actually take the step of trying to get him but the interest is the interest is there and undeniable like the interest is there jason Kidd finished his playing career as a Knick james Dolan knows him well the Knicks front office knows him well obviously he interviewed 5 years ago for example and he did and and they liked him in that interview process tibs was getting that job like Jason Kidd interviewed but Tibs was getting that job but yes it was said at the time that Jason Kidd made a strong impression in that interview process so they are very well they are probably more acquainted with him than any candidate who’s been talked about in this process they already know him so it’s just every you know and I totally get it everyone wants to know exactly how it’s going to play out from here and it just it’s moving slower than we want we’re all impatient we want resolution but until one of the two teams involved says this is definitely not happening I think the talk will linger mavericks Knicks are also tied together in a very interesting way uh James Dolan sphere is built on property owned uh by Miriam Adlesen of the Dallas Mavericks so just forgot about that yeah that’s right the sphere is sitting on land that is owned by Miriam Madson of course who owns the Dallas Mavericks um speaking of the Dallas Mavericks future Cooper Flag the presumptive number one overall pick for the Dallas Mavericks June 17th are you guys ready i don’t know that we’re going to be invited but more on that why wouldn’t we be i’m just instinct tells me probably not a probably not a not an open to the media day it is surprise guest day on the DLS Mavs podcast what What do we got up our sleeves look at what are the odds Cooper flag walks in the door sits down and signs the wall i I think that would be great be a banner day for this show uh with all the odds the odds are slim right it is that is not happening that was a joke please understand that was a joke you think June 17th but I’m ready to be surprised are you ready to be surprised um but yes June 17th is the day that Cooper Flag it’s basically you know after Father’s Day but before the draft is that after when is Father’s Day this weekend it is next weekend or Yeah I guess Sunday sunday that’s good to know oh wow writing that one down sounds like Bob’s got some last minute shopping to do um yeah so look I think when Jason Kid was in here sitting with us he talked about that they they were really looking forward to bringing him to Dallas and starting that process and I mean that visit’s happening and then eight days after that June 25th with the number one pick in the 2025 NBA draft the Dallas Mavericks select trade whoa we have a No could you the Dallas Could you imagine no adam Silver the Dallas Mavericks select dylan Harper Cooper flag from Duke University could you imagine if Adam Silver walked up to that podium adam Silver’s He’s a Duke guy he even if they sent the trade in he would he would he would pick Cooper Flat that card say it’s what it says who to trade what now next week on June 17th the weather the high is 94 degrees what was your line that you dropped when uh we won the number one overall pick Bobby that get ready to learn waterburger that’s right is that where they’re going to Is that how you said it i maybe get ready to learn Mando you gota You got to get the inside scoop what they serve we’re going to have our top team on it our top team face what they serve um real quick what is expected do we know what’s to be expected of that meeting that’s going to be happening that day or is it just more so hey nice to meet you is it a meeting or a workout you need to work out i mean I would imagine it would involve some court time sure and a dinner but on the other hand do they need They’re picking Cooper flag so do they need to go through a workout i don’t I’ll try to find that out i genuinely I can’t tell you that I know the whole itinerary but is a an onc court audition is not necessary they’re take him to Bies they’re drafting Cooper flag if you had your way they would take him to Waterburg fuel City Taco i’m just doing so much free advertising right now you are sarah why do you miss Waterburg sarah’s not in Dallas they need to take to Wendy’s and get a Frosty yeah she’s in the West Coast now oh yeah we miss our die hard Sarah shout out to you Sarah um make sure you check out the Stein Line Substack he’s got all you uh choose to alle Stadium uh also has been revealed as the site of Wrestlemania 42 for next seat next year so shout out to there a ball knower bonus for being able to explain why it’s the NBA finals and the Stanley Cup final that’s a great question nhl is very traditional if I had to guess to play one game maybe honestly I mean in in like it’s the Champions League final that’s right it’s a one-off game yeah every every final is just a final love hockey love hockey a lot never understood that one why do they call it the finals and not maybe on maybe on switch show day I should crash crash the star set and ask Craig Love that question at least they’re not putting digital Stanley Cups on the ice you know to f that looked so hideous last night even Wikipedia just calls it the Stanley Cup finals but notes it’s also known as the Stanley Cup final among various media wow so it’s literally called the Stanley Cup final always the media yeah wow by the way this has been the most online NBA Finals crew I’ve ever seen in my life because the early uh Did you hear the early bang that uh Mike Breen gave Tyrese Hallebert when he made a three last night saying that he felt like he was owed one after he didn’t say it when he hit the game winner in uh in game one he was responding to social media who uh was upset with Mike Brain yeah i think like the best thing that you can do with your life is just to simply just not post like it is so powerful when you just don’t post sometimes it’s easier to do nothing but but this isn’t this isn’t people posting this is people acknowledging people posting on the broadcasting about posting it’s only going to lead to more posting yeah that’s right we’re posting about posters we’re we’re tweeting about ratings we’re talking about people that aren’t going to watch cuz they think that it’s it’s all Keynesian and beauty contests and I’m so sick of it and I my life is so much better now that I’m just offline i I think that is the cornest thing i think the literally the corniest thing Adam Adam Adam sover has ever done it’s not just hyperimposing a couple like like laid on images the corniest thing he ever did is when that got backlash on Twitter he changed it Midame he had them change it midame to the NBA Finals script it did look really bad i mean the Yeah I thought I thought the insect trophy it was hideous with the trophies on there and then they change it to the script it’s like it all looks bad and changing it mid game is unbelievable it’s just like that’s why you just don’t don’t post and don’t read posts just don’t do it outside the NFL the NBA is by far the most online league it is quite insane outside of the what the NFL the NFL is very online as well no NBA is the most dude nba is so online no that’s what I’m saying like it’s the NFL and the NBA they’re the two most online uh leagues out there for sure uh speaking of online shout out to Preston uh with the 499 super chat uh is this insane money works per track dallas Darius Garland and Dre cleveland gets Anthony Simons Caleb Martin and the 29 Lakers first round pick and Portland gets Klay Thompson Daniel Gaffford and the 2030 Philadelphia second round pick bobby if I was the Mavs I would do that and say “Thanks guys talk later.” I don’t think that Cleveland would do that um Portland like yeah why i think Portland would probably be pretty happy to do that um yeah I think Cleveland would probably they they’d probably be a little perturbed that they’re only getting one first for Garland but also I think part of the reason they would trade Garland is to get a player that’s not like Garland simons isn’t exactly like Garland but it is kind of the same issue that they already have um so I I I don’t know that that would totally make sense for the Cavs but if I’m the Mavs I am absolututely looking into Darius Garland absolutely looking into that yeah I would say that on as you laid out I think on like two different levels that’s that just is not going to work for Cleveland but thank you for the super chat and again Darius Garland a good question it’s one of the better trades that I’ve seen in chat so far and I think there are ways for the Mavs to just work directly with Cleveland and figure something out i I have done my not reporting just uh fantasizing i think that there are ways to put a pretty compelling offer on the table if Cleveland really is interested in moving on led by PJ Washington pj and either Yeah it depends on what happens with Jared Allen so either Gaffford or potentially I think that they could use Clay for sure and then picks and then potentially some other stuff i agree with that speaking of the Cleveland Cavaliers they announced today that Darius Garland underwent surgery to repair a great toe injury and he will be sidelineed approximately uh four to five months so that could take him into October November uh as far as a potential return for Darius Garland so big news on the injury front uh for the Cleveland Cavaliers back court speaking of back courts Mark Stein uh who had a ton of news over the weekend by the way real quick yeah I’m sorry to cut you off but um one of the people that had the same kind of surgery according to our guy Jeff St and street clothes uh is Devin Harris and Devin Harris had I I don’t know if this was the specific injury that he was managing later in his career but he had a series of foot issues um he had to wear a whole lot of stuff in and around his foot and even in and around his shoe just in order to play basketball later on so hopefully this isn’t something that has like long-term consequences for Darius Garland at one point Devin had to wear an orthotic the orthotic broke midame and he missed a lot of time after that so hopefully it’s not a very serious deal but I think Devin had some some other stuff uh obviously he played for a really long time so I don’t think it was just that one thing but um yeah it was it was pretty serious stuff for Devin all the best to Darius Garland as he comes back uh from that injury as we go around the assoc association here on the DLS Mavs podcast uh we’re speaking of back courts uh Mark Stein as we mentioned was doing a lot of reporting this weekend including um interesting situations happening in Phoenix they just hired a new head coach but also could they be in line Mark Stein to offer their franchise player a 2-year $150 million contract extension this summer seems like it yes because that’s the max that he’s eligible for and I mean all you’ve seen the way the Suns operated when they got down to the final four or five candidates this wasn’t the case with Dave Bliss from the Thunder because the Suns actually had to go to OK Oklahoma City to interview Dave Bliss because he was still coaching in the playoffs but the other four candidates who made it basically to the not quite finals cuz they they went from four five down to two but Devin Booker was involved talking to all those candidates i mean the Suns made him part of the process you’ve heard Matt Ishbia openly say they are not trading him we are building around him they have publicly made him as untouchable as they can and and this is the reality of the new NBA the numbers sound crazy when you say them out loud or you just look at them and you think $75 million a year but that’s the direction max salaries are going there will be someone else who gets more i we are eventually going to get to a place where someone is making $100 million a season we are we are making our way slowly but surely to that level because the TV money is coming in and the salary cap will go up and we’re we will eventually get there but that’s never get into soccer territory that’s no but see that’s the thing about soccer in soccer those big numbers are involved in the transfer the player salaries are never they’re much higher in the NBA the player salaries are much higher in the NBA than even for the stars than even top level the highest paid athletes are NBA stars with the exception of of individual sports maybe and so if if Devin Booker is eligible for a 2-year $150 million extension it’s the most they can extend him the most he can get obvious obviously he’s going to go for it is Devin Booker a max player who said that you said that that was weird where did that come from i don’t know i I don’t know who said that but they made an they raised an interesting point your ventriloquist abilities are in question they they made an interesting point they they were just asking questions who becomes the first hundred million dollar player in the NBA i’m going to go with Victor Winyama i mean it just depends on the like the when the contracts line you’d have to ask a true salary capex return for how how many years it will take us to get but it it’s going to be in our lifetimes that there will be a $100 million player it could be someone like Cooper Flag it honestly it could be depending on if depending on how the timing works because it wasn’t that long ago that there was the first $50 million play i mean remember Lucas Super Max had he stayed was supposed to be about 350 over five that’s right so that number will just the super maxes after we’ll just keep going it’s probably the best player who’s been in the league like four years like four years right now if if we’re going up as much as Yeah if we Yes we at DLS Sports we’re getting a piece of that pie where where where do we rank in the Barri how much do we get from that i’ll take 1% i’ll take 1% yeah i mean to split among the five of us us four and Tanner i would still split 0.1% he’s got to put up with the four of us every day and he does a hell of a job doing it what if it’s all right who would be the funniest hundred million dollar player like Fran Vagner would that be a funniest first hundred million dollar man no he deserves it we lived in a world at one point where Mike Connley was making more money per year than LeBron James like at one point Yeah mike Conley was the highest paid player the summer that Mike Connley was eligible for a deal was like it was like 150 over five something like that and it just sometimes it is a m and I think that was the use the maths for driving that price up by the way it was a cow fight yes so it’s like it’s some of it is just how the and look there is no spike this time so I should where I talked about all the TV money coming in but we’re not we’re not seeing some dramatic cap spike this summer so it’s it’s it’s being phased in in a different way than it was the last time but the salaries are just going to keep the the max numbers are going to keep going up and they’re going to look crazy but this is the reality of the modern NBA that was the the Mike Connley Hassan Whiteside and Nick Batum summer around the Mavs office and then of course it came away with Harrison Barnes and Andrew Boen nick Batum had a really good interview over the weekend i encourage folks to watch he talked about how his career was saved uh throughout the course of his time nick Batum really good player over a long time 35% of the cap is projected to be in the 2030 31 season uh 87.7 million so yeah so there you go in 2030 31 yeah so Oh boy that’s not even our lifetime that’s like the next decade that’s 5 years so you figure maybe 3 to 5 years after that legitimately it could be it could be Cooper could be Cooper flag it could be Cooper flag yeah because you’re going to you’re going to need to hit free agency about eight nine years from now if the money keeps scaling up then I’m estimating 20 33 34 yeah it could be it could be wimby then because by then it’ll have 10 years yeah yeah so someone under 35% max so you’re going to need you know and also we’ll see how the CBA adapts and changes and you know it wouldn’t surprise me if they we’re 10 to 15 years away do you think okay this is quite late in the show to ask a question as sweeping as this but do you think that now that salaries are so high players will be tempted to play longer to make just unholy amounts of money or will they be like you know what I just don’t really want to do this for 20 years i’ll just do it for like 10 15 and just get out of here i think I think they’ll play shorter because they’re getting a whole bunch of money in college now yeah it’s college but then like NFL too it’s like why should I put my body through if I’m an NFL player i’m not playing more than But I think most guys generally want to play till they absolutely cannot play anymore till they just till they just don’t have an opportunity i think you’re both right and it’s a playerto player basis depends on the person is that good enough for you Tanner awesome it’s actually we made it that’ll do it for us here on the DLS Mavs podcast appreciate it got Tanner making sound today sir that is our national insider Mark Stein that is our Mavericks analyst Bobby Carell that is our
