How Copper Flagg TRANSFORMS the Dallas Mavericks’ Identity & Ace Bailey is Dropping Rumor
on today’s show Cooper Flag isn’t going to change the Mavs identity he’s just going to reinforce the one they already tried to make talk about that and more in the draft on today’s Mavs stop it stop the number one pick will go to the Dallas Mavericks cooper flag will fly in Dallas you are Locked on M your daily Mavericks podcast of the Locked Onet your team every day i’m going to get a city right about Jason Kid for the 14th day in a row the Knicks aren’t going to make the They’re not going to make the ask we’re going to talk about it no we’re not no I’m done done i mean I’m done until the next like whatever until the next official like rumor comes out until somebody makes a statement or makes a request somebody at this point somebody’s got to make a move either the Knicks have to make the ask or the Mavs have to accept the ask or or officially come out and say DTR rel like combo define the relationship kid Nicks Mavs Mary F killed today’s episode we’re actually going to talk about the draft we’ll get into some of our big questions about the draft i want to talk about Ace Bailey cuz there’s some rumors and some some talk that he’s falling in the draft that he may not go to the Sixers and they’re not sold on him i want to talk about the Spurs should do at number two and with Giannis and all that so we’ll talk about some draft stuff but let’s talk about the number one at the top of the draft and Cooper flag when the Mavs got Cooper Flag it changed their window it changed the identity of the franchise it changed a lot of different things it changed the trajectory of you know Anthony Davis’s career probably with the Mavericks to change the trajectory of Nico Harrison’s career with the Mavericks probably it changed a lot of things obviously the business side you heard the Rick Welts comment recently that they made like $7 million in ticket sales after they got the number one pick in the draft there’s a lot of things that have changed because of Cooper Flag it changed a lot of your opinions about the Mavericks you listening you may have like jumped back in and started listening and caring about the Mavericks again because the Mavericks were going to get Cooper Flag and got the number one pick and that’s great we love you all but one thing that I don’t think Cooper Flag is going to change is the identity of the Mavericks on the court because I think he’s just going to enfor reinforce the one that they already were trying to create for themselves which is kind of fascinating to get this level of talent to bring this guy in a number one pick is supposed to be like a franchise changing player but what the Mavericks wanted to be before they even got the number one pick they wanted to be all about defense defense wins championships explain yourself sorry and they wanted to be all about size and he’s bringing both of those things he’s going to bring a lot of defense he’s going to bring a lot of size and so I don’t think he’s going to I I thought about this because I wrote one of the questions I wrote down when they first got flagged i started thinking through all the different things we could talk about through the summer about him and one of them is does he change their identity and I think my my answer to the question is no yeah i think on the court yeah I’m with you on the court it doesn’t you know he’s not going to a situation to where it’s a Washington and everything’s going to be built around him and you’re starting off with Cooper flag how do each of the pieces fit around Cooper flag he’s the Mavs have been really open about the timeline right their timeline of Nico’s timeline and everything and I was thinking more of you know identity with flag of like off the court and just like the Mavs as a whole and I put like something bigger like something bigger than the the timeline right now because I think the the moment that that Luca was traded as crazy as it sounds you know one of the talking points afterwards was like “Hey we’re win now.” You know win now it’s like we’re not win now with Luca but we’re win now that we got the three-year window type of thing and we have the AD contract that lines up we could get the Kyrie contract that lines up with Nico and I think for so for all of us before that lottery night it was all right well we know they’re going for it for the next you know three years they were previously but even more now even the GM’s thrown out the three years thing so but what happens after that the Gear When does a GM throw out a three-year timeline yeah so so I I think then as soon as you get Cooper flag you kind of have there’s hope for a lot of Mavs fans past three years like there’s hope for the future of the Mavs there’s hope for hey I actually think I know granted all the history of stuff that brings trauma with the past trade but it’s like I actually think I know a player who could be playing in the new arena that we talk about being built oh yeah that you know could be opening you know opening up that building or being on the side of it in a big banner or something like that like before the lottery it’s like well good luck I don’t know who’s going to be be there in 2031 u so you know and that’s only six years away I know so it’s it’s a little you know shorter than you think so but uh but on to your point though on the court it’s going to be especially this rookie season you don’t want to just say like hey just fit in around all these guys cuz he’s better than that he’s going to give them another offensive like creator something you can run offense through and stuff like that and obviously improve the defense but you’re not building a whole like system around him he is more of a reinforcer of the the system identity on the court that you’re wanting to build that’s kind of the amazing thing about him is that he does he can fit into any system that you want to run like you think about these two finals teams right now you think about the Thunder obviously he could fit in there and he could he would defend like a maniac he would be able to add a little bit more playmaking and probably a little bit more passing to a team that needs it you think about the Pacers and obviously he would fit right into the Seakum role i think I saw our guy Jimmy All things Mavs on Twitter say if Pascal Seakum is what Cooper Flack turns into then I’d be happy that’s what he that’s what he said about it i think on offense I’d be h I’d be happy about that i think defensively you want somebody better than what Seakum is for definitely better defensively i think I think he will be too but if you were saying like Cooper Flag ends up being Pascalakum on offense I think I’d be fine with that and so you can easily see him fitting in with that Pacers team and honestly like every team in the league you can see him fitting into so this is not a Mav specific thing where you’re bringing in this guy and you’re like “All right fit into what we do.” He’s going to fit into what they do he already does he already reinforces the defense and the size mark Stein talked about today on on the DLS show that Mavs don’t want to trade either of Gaffford or PJ they’d rather they’d rather keep both of them which to me well obviously obviously yes they’d rather do that but I think it just shows that they would rather keep the they would rather keep the size and they’re not they’re not thinking we’ve got to get rid of one of these bigs we’ve got to get rid of one of these you know forwards these these power forwards we have too many we have too much size we need to do this now they obviously still need to get a guard and they’re aware of that and we’ve heard rumors about that too but I think it just re it reinforced that they’re going to double down on size and the Mavs are going to be the biggest team in the NBA next year you start thinking through some of the teams and like “All right here’s here’s the here’s the teams that had the most players 610 and above averaging 20 minutes a game.” And you assume that all four of these guys are going to average 20 minutes a game ad Flag Lively Gaffford right uh I don’t know i don’t know about Gaffford in that we’ll see he’ll get to he’ll get like 18 19 but close enough i mean that’s just that’s just pretty tough to like Yeah anyway Orlando had four players paulo and Fron are both listed at 610 by the way goa and Wendo Carter Jr that’s that that was the most the next was the Mavs with AD Lively and Gaffford at three memphis had three with Jiren Jackson Jr edy and Santi Alama and then the Bucks had three with Giannis Brook Lopez and Bobby Portoris the Mavs will have four players probably next year that average 20 minutes or so a game that are 610 and above i just think that that’s wild they’re going to be the biggest team in the league and that’s going to be part of their identity yeah i mean a lot of that is going to hinge on uh flag plant you know if he can play the two at times how much does he switch off with PJ at the three um um Kid Kid said he’s going to play the two yeah um why have we not done a whole pot on that yet what does Cooper Flack look like at the two i Yeah yeah on tomorrow’s show kid also started OMAX and and Lively at the beginning of a preseason and had us all doing shows like are both rookies going to start are they both going to start well you got you got one out of two two other things real quick uh one it gives you two more things you can’t do two more things your whole thing is one more um when it comes to like other teams in the league who have a like a young um cornerstone stud of a prospect player that you’re looking at and saying “Dude they’re going to be there for the next decade.” Like you can’t count that team out for the next decade because they have that good of a prospect that is going to raise the floor everything that we used to say about Luca and Dallas and how he raised the floor and we’ve seen some of the supporting cast and stuff I think Flag’s going to have that same type of effect and you look across the league and you’re like “All right OKC for sure Spurs with Wimby Dylan Harper other guys mini with Ant do you want to throw Orlando and Detroit in there?” Um I’m just I’m trying to think of you know guys under 20 like even younger even younger than 24 you know something like that 24 and younger um Houston if you want those it just gives them a a guy that you’re like “All right they’re always going to you know they’re they should always be there.” And I think because of everything that hopefully they uh underestimated regarding the Luca trade and stuff with the fan base and everything I think you have somebody in the building now that’s bigger than Nico because I don’t think you can like even if Nico wanted to trade Cooper Flag right now I I I could be wrong i don’t think Dumont would sign off on it right now oh I’m totally with you considering everything that’s happened so I think now you have somebody in the building that is bigger that’s bigger than a Nico Harrison um and I think that’s a that that’s an identity changer in a way how does that change the Mavs identity what’s the Mavs offensive identity going to be i want to just talk about that a little bit and then we’ll get into the draft coming up [Music] today’s episode of Lock the Apps brought to you ones we don’t even talk about a lot of the ones we don’t even talk about in the show but we send on there for sure so subscribe to that link in the description right here all right Isaac I want to talk a little bit more about the identity thing because you brought up how the Mavs off the court identity changes which I kind of started the show agreeing with you that it changes a lot the Mavs have a future like the Mavs have somebody to build around and now all of a sudden you cannot just hemorrhage the future anymore and I think your identity now becomes a team that has to be more careful and cannot just like all right let let’s just go all in i don’t think they can be an all-in team anymore and I think that’s one thing that does change their identity as a team cuz I think a lot of teams would look at this Mavs situation and go “Oh let’s take advantage of this let’s get let’s give them a win now guard let’s rake them over their coals for multiple picks and stuff to give them you know that guard that they need or something because if they don’t get it done now their time is really running out and now that’s not the case because they have a future they’re like “All right well if they don’t get it now they just reup and rebuild around Cooper Flag whenever all this first timeline is done.” Yeah i think that they’re they’re viewing it probably as a luxury of hey we’re going to I don’t enjoy all the two timeline approach combos but it’s like light years ahead uh that I think they’re going to look at like hey we’re good enough to win now and good enough to go for it right now but we’re als but we also have enough uh we also have Cooper Flag and Lively and some picks and stuff that we’re not like hemorrhaged for the future i think San Antonio is going to look at it in the same way and I think they’re going to take Dylan Harper and trade for Kevin Durant and then look at it and say “Hey we have Kevin Durant De’aran Fox and Wimi we have all these young guys and Harper’s coming off the bench and we think he’s awesome too and it’s like they’re gonna win as many games as possible right now and also look at it and say oh cool we also have one of the best young cores in the league at the same time so I think in a sim similar way Dallas is going to look at and say AD Kyrie Clay all these guys like we’re going for it right now but also we have arguably the best you know prospect under the age of 22 it’s like him and Wimpby do you think Cooper Flag changes the Mav’s offensive identity now and then like looking forward the next couple of years when you’re building the Mavericks and you have Cooper Flag offensively what are you trying to add and would it be different than what they would add to this team right now yeah i mean he’s not the same like creator and everything and playmaker as Luca but in the in the way of you have another you have a big uh creator on the wing then you get that like I mean PJ’s just not that type of creator so now you’re looking at a guy who’s always going to be out on the floor that’s going to give you the defense but also like support Kyrie uh or whoever guard you trade for whatever and that like you’re always going to have those two guys who can create offense run pick and roll he ran pick and roll a lot at Duke and stuff and was really effective at it so that’s that’s the thing on offense that at times last year was like well crap Kyrie’s hurt lucas traded well Brandon Williams get in the game it’s like you’re the only creator we have right now so that you should always have two guys on the floor that could create do you think Cooper Flack can be one of those or do you think all right it’s got to be two It’s got to be two guard specific guard creators uh I I think I don’t know day one that you’re saying bring the ball up the floor and run everything yeah yeah but I think he is the next best option behind Kyrie on the roster that I think you’re going to be able to give it to him on the perimeter out on the wing and say “All right run a high pick and roll and he’s going to make the right decision or get to the basket and score.” Yeah absolutely let us know in the comments kind of over time proved that he can make the outside shot to where people don’t play drop all day on him or they don’t sag off on him and like all the stuff like and but he’s a good enough shooter like it’s not going to be that it’s not going to be a Rondo or Westbrook but he’s got to show or like Luca had the step back from 30 feet so you know and eventually teams kind of just like let him have it and anyway so he’s just got to prove that way and change the geometry of the floor right and and eventually they’ll have to decide to guard flag in a certain way and so he’ll have to change that geometry too by get picking up you know his mid-range shot going really well or his three-point shot translating really well from his freshman season to the NBA let’s talk about the rest of the drafts let’s do it ace Bailey ace Bailey is falling like I I keep hearing I keep hearing from people that the Sixers aren’t in love with him what should they do what should they do they should take Edgecom uh you know I did a one more thing a while back uh back last week I think um doing a doing a mock draft and I had Ace Bailey fall into like seven or eight which is probably too probably too far uh but I do there are a lot of other prospects I like through there so I mean Trey Johnson I think is I would take Trey over Ace Bailey uh but I would take Edgecom also over Ace Bailey i think Philly should go with BJ Edgecom from Baylor but um they could very well go Trey Johnson i wouldn’t be shocked i had Malawatch going to Charlotte in that mock draft some people are like “You’re dumb you don’t even.” And I’m like “I don’t know i could probably am dumb with it.” But I think there’s a realistic path for Charlotte to take Malawatch in that so and I see like the whole thing with Ace Bailey said the whole thing if you type his name in on YouTube highlights and you’re like “Dude how is he take how is he making these shots?” There’s some crazy shot making when you watch the YouTube highlight stuff but when you go back and watch some of the Rucker stuff with him and Dylan Harper together and you’re like because that’s what I did when I started going back and watching some Rucker games and I’m like “Yes let me hole up on my computer.” Cuz my biggest thing is like how how did you suck that bad like not him but how did your team two top three picks yeah when you had you know Ace Bailey you know just rising up the ranks there and you know some people look at the combine stuff he didn’t for the whole season everybody’s talking about dude 610 and he does look big on the floor but then he goes to combine it’s like all right without shoes it’s like 67 and it’s like oh he’s not really 610 but Rucker’s had him at 610 some of the decision making i think for him more than so many other people through there like a Canipple um I think VJ Edge coming away like Dylan Harper I think those guys are like kind of fit proof i think AC Ace Bailey is like the definition of man if he hits the right fit in the system and stuff around him you’re going to get a an awesome player but if it’s the wrong fit then it it could be a struggle raphael from locked on NBA big board today said “If I’m Philly I’m taking Trey Johnson at three.” And then he just said “Turns off notifications.” Dude Raphael’s been high on Trey Johnson for a while so and I I agree with him like I’ve read all of Raphael’s stuff on Trey Johnson i’m fully sold on that i’m higher than VJ Edgecom and stuff but uh Trey Johnson wouldn’t shock me if he was a pick for Philly be really interesting i just found it fascinating that that you like this is the time of year in the draft where people start overthinking prospects and even on on big board Rafa Hills like I stop watching any film he’s like I’ve already stopped because you just keep you just overthink it at this point and I feel like that’s happening with with some of these but yeah also the Ace Bailey is the whole thing about Ace Bailey is all right he’s this incredible shotmaker but also the decision- making is not the greatest so you now you have to sort through all right what was what was being asked of him and what did he just do because all right now I he thinks he can make any shot and then he had that what was that quote that he had where he’s like he didn’t think he ever took a bad shot yeah where you’re like oh that’s confidence but I don’t know if you want that that level of confidence uh man I think it would make sense for Philly to take him too like I think it’d be great yeah I think it it’d be awesome too embiid plan too he’d fit with Maxi and them yeah you have you have Maxi McCain and Ace Bailey like that that’s a lot of scoring from the guard wings there’s just a couple other guys I like more than him though pretty interesting what should the Spurs do at two should they go get Giannis maybe we’ll try to be objective we’ll talk about that coming up today’s episode of Lock Maps brought to you by Monarch Money use the code lockdown NBA at monarchmoney.com for 50% off your first year that’s monarchmoney.com code lockdown NBA for half off your first year shut it down let’s go home all right Isaac we talking about the NBA draft we talked about Cooper Flag and the identity we talked about Ace Bailey fallen what should the Spurs do at number two because I think for the beginning people just said take Dylan Harper and run with it but now other people are saying well if you could get Giannis just get Giannis and then just just try now i mean you might as well and Giannis would be absolutely insane you’ve already got De’Arren Fox there that’s a championship ready team like why would you not just take the championship ready team yeah i mean I think if they could get Giannis and not just fully destroy their entire roster then I think you you I think the Giannis Wimby duo would be so generational defensively and on offense that you would have like Yeah I think you could challenge anybody at that point and all the stuff so I think I think they should get Giannis if they could and Giannis wants to come there and all the different stuff um but if it’s not Giannis then I’m taking Dylan Harper i don’t care i don’t give a crap about any of the fit stuff all right when it comes to well does he fit with De’Aran Fox you know who said that question the Sacramento Kings with Tyrese Hallebert Hallebertton exact same look it’s just like don’t do this like just take Dylan Harper and be done with it don’t I don’t want to hear any of the Fox Castle all the stuff like I would trade I would trade Fox before I would trade the second pick for a non Giannis thing you know who’s also an unrestricted free agent next summer who dear Fox dear Fox they can’t they can’t guarantee that they’ll keep him either right like let me ask you a question just randomly asked I think about this the other day going down the road because this is what I think about going down the road um what would San Antonio have to add it feels like they would have to add something right if it was if Utah called and said mark it in in five marking in and five for two yeah it might depend on who’s available right like San Antonio has to add something worthy of that right like in that San Antonio has to add something to give to Utah i don’t know is the difference between Dylan Harper and and Trey Johnson or Edgecom or Bailey is like is that a Larry Markin difference is that I don’t know it feel I mean it feels like Markin’s better than that like it feels like he’s he’s he’s also got this big contract and he did not have a good year last year okay all right they might they might have to add something something little obviously salaries so maybe it’s like a Deon Vel going back and some other and some you know some other stuff where it’s there’s some value going back to to Utah but yeah I don’t understand Utah’s direction right now especially with Austin Ang like “Hey we’re going to like try we’re not going to like all the stuff.” And it’s like you know who also said they tried ted Leonis the owner of the Wizards said that they did not tank last year so it’s like okay the Wizards did good cool cool like anybody can say anything uh but the Spurs no yeah I think they trade for KD they take Dylan Harper they ride the two like “Hey we’re going to win.” And the two timeline thing what an incredible two timelines a 37year-old former MVP yeah victor one of the one of the be the youngest top 10 player we’ve had in a long time president’s Luca probably and then then you got Dylan Harper too stefan Castle the rookie of the year last year roster though really fun roster would be fun and maybe KD would finally have fun playing basketball again i don’t know what he enjoys okay questions I know you love who don’t you understand in the first round derek Queen i don’t understand that was my answer that was my answer too i just I people have been way higher than I mean obviously I’m not like a full-time draft dude but I just don’t get it like I I don’t get the top 10 love i I mean personally I think it’s like end of the lottery and that was be that was before all the combine number stuff which was alarming and stuff i don’t know what position I don’t like the uh like Shenun comp like I think it’s kind of a shot at Shenun and stuff and uh so I I don’t know him and Murray Boils is my other guy that I think defensively he’s a lot of fun but I don’t think that he could hit the Trinity River if he was on you know the bridge throwing a ball off of it and was there water in the Trinity River yeah I guess after that storm the other day storm um so I just Yeah and I It makes me cringe when anyone comps Draymond Green to any prospect oh yeah people want to throw Draymond out with him but some people are like super super high on him and it’s literally made me go back and like dude what am I freaking missing like what am I and I just I don’t know i just can’t I don’t understand it him and Queen I I don’t fully get i don’t Yeah you It’s never good when somebody compares a draft prospect to such a unique player like there’s only one like Derrick Queen was talking about Joic with himself and you’re like “Okay to get to Jokic’s level you know.” Yeah like or even to get to Joic’s level of that that style of player to be effective in the NBA you have to be almost a Jokic level scorer plus his you know he’s a generational passer so you’re not going to compare that to Dererick Wing either like it a slow a slow small big that doesn’t shoot and doesn’t defend that well you’re like “Okay who is who is that?” Like I just feel like and I don’t want to go down this whole like rabbit trail like I I feel like you see these type of players like really excel in college and it’s a struggle in the NBA he’ll crush the G-League like yeah he’ll run through the G-League and people would be like why didn’t why didn’t why isn’t Derrick Queen getting any run like whoever drafts I hope I kind of hope the Wizards draft him because he’s from because the Maryland thing and all that and then so that’s so high for him like No they have a second pick they they have that they have that other pick they have 18 okay yeah yeah they pick him they pick him at 18 or No no they pick him at 18 and then he’s in the G- League to start the year and everybody’s like all the like he’s just he’s averaging 30 and 30 and 12 in the G- League let’s bring him up yeah yeah yeah I don’t get him is anybody Is anybody you fall in love with do you have your guy you always have your one guy i haven’t landed on like my one guy i’ll I’ll say that for the draft for sure um some guys I’m like higher on Essen from France um I think he’s going to go top 10 and it’s going to like some of the draft oh no yeah yeah he’s he’s Yeah I like him um I’m higher on Demond uh I would honestly if I was at Utah or Washington I would very very strongly look in Jagger Dem so I like him a lot i almost like him more than Fierce but yeah we’ll we’ll see on that i just like what he does size playmaking all this stuff rashir Fleming I really like him a lot uh some guys towards the end of the first I think at some point we’ll do I’ll do it one more thing or we might do a pod on it stuff if Dallas moved back into the bottom of the first round they shed some salary pick up a pick or something like that I’ve always been hiring him Drake Pal steel from North Carolina um yeah I I think he’s honestly one of the best wing defenders in the whole entire draft I think he’s that good at defense and I’m so happy to see him getting some love right now and some big boards and mock drafts that started to get him going there in the 20s and some for in some mock drafts and stuff so uh I’m happy with that walter Clayton for me with him it’s like don’t overthink it don’t do the Brunson stuff the Florida guard that was going off in the tournament yeah like I I just think if I’m a Boston if I’m Dallas if I try you know if I trade in or something or if I’m a team down through there I just don’t I’m not going to look at the size thing i don’t know i was burned on the Brunston i wasn’t all out on Brunson i just didn’t think he was gonna be that good um Oh who did and but like I like Clayton and then I like um Theo thyro oh Theierro yeah Theo there you go from Arkansas i like him a lot apparently he changed the pronunciation of his name like from it was Theo and then when he got to Arkansas he change he’s like it’s actually Theiero it’s like Oh oh okay cool i thought for a while it was the but the we were recording the the mock draft and I was like all right I got to know how to pronounce all these guys’ names and I don’t know that I did the greatest on it there’s some of them you’re like the guy from Illinois still i had that wrote down the other day i’m not as high on him either yakunis yeah um he’s he had some really fun moments at Illinois but there’s some stuff on the perimeter so like I think if we’re just comparing um the bigger playmaking point guards there and Demond and him like I just I like Demond so much more i I think Demond’s gonna be a good good pro player like a better Josh Giddy and Jgo Damon for BYU 69 over 69 playmaking like was a freshman at BYU and average Toronto could get him or even or if Houston could get him with all the pieces they have and say hey run this offense I think he his passing some of his passing stuff at BYU was yeah pretty pretty crazy so the Rockets he’s just he’s just passing like a foot from him because they have no space it’s just like right at the rim with the Raptors he would play power forward because all they have is power forwards that’s just all they He would be fun with like Scotty Barnes and Brandon Ingram and another four rj Barrett who else am I missing rj Barrett another four i don’t know what is he even on that team next year is he on the maps we’ll see we’ll see what happens but there you go that’s some draft talk we’ll have some more of it as the as it comes on we’ll talk about some of those prospects we think the Mavs should try and trade back in like Isaac said and all that so check back in tomorrow we’ll have more we’re waiting for Slightly to come off the bench he’s he’s on the IR we’ll see he comes back thanks so much for listening to L on Mavs tiny Tim over there peace out boom

If you were the 76ers, who would you take with the 3rd pick?
Id take the center from Duke or Trey Johnson at #3.
Nick does look like Kyle korvier
@7:39 None of these teams are making noise in the playoffs right now. Yes, you want your team to be bigger, but they also need to be versatile. This isn't the era for traditional bigs anymore.
Wish we could trade flagg and picks for anthony edwards
If we could get another pick (late first or early second) I would love if we draft Neoklis Avdalas. He’s pretty much a 6’9 Dragic/ Diet Luka
what happens after 3 years IF they keep AD? The team totally fails for the next 15 years.
