The Reed Sheppard Experiment is going better than you think…
the 24 NBA draft the Houston Rockets drafted a now 20-year-old guard with elite basketball instincts lights out shooting capabilities and just remarkable potential and his name is Reed Shepard welcome to Basketball Intuition i’m your host Ethan Simon today we’re going to be talking about Reed Shepard i’d like to start by saying Reed did not play much in his rookie season but that’s because he was on the number two seed in the Western Conference they didn’t really need him could they have used him at points absolutely and there were times where I felt like he should have been on the floor more than he was but regardless if he’s on the Rockets or if he’s a trade piece for another team I do believe wherever he’s at next season he is going to contribute so now let’s not waste any more time we’re going to start with his build and his frame and then we’re going to get to the pick and roll branch off from there okay so like I mentioned Reed Shepard is 20 years old at the combine he measured almost 6’2 without shoes so we’ll call him 6’3 on the court also with a 63 wingspan weighing in somewhere around 185 lbs yes he’s smaller but in my opinion it’s not really a problem for his game and this was the really impressive part about his combine with a nice little arm trick he was able to get a 42 inch vertical at the combine um now over to the pick and roll because this is where I personally felt like he was able to showcase his abilities better than any other situation now Reed looks very very comfortable in the pick and roll and one of the things that I really like about his game is the fact that he can be a point guard good eyes he sees the floor very well but he also can be a flamethrower in a role kind of like a Klay Thompson and not only is he just a good passer and he’s a good three-point shooter he is absolutely a three-level scorer he finishes at the rim he gets to the mid-range and of course he can shoot the three ball i also thought that he handles pressure really well as a ball handler he is very calm and controlled at such a young age this is one of the things that really stuck out to me and I thought this was very very impressive in twoman game situations he relocates off the ball into scoring positions so very well and it’s so impressive if you don’t know what I’m talking about I’ll put it up on the screen but he did this a lot and I found it very impressive and kind of expanding on the pick and roll a little bit more i mean he just does everything that you want out of a guard he’s got good vision he is patient good passes good ideas he can get to the inside like I mentioned he’s a three-level scorer so you have to follow him everywhere around the court and if you’re not stuck to him he can get his shot off anywhere i also thought he had great footwork and some really fun ball fakes and I guess we can just go to shooting from here he has a pure jump shot with a quick trigger i love his jumper so much some three-point percentages for you from three-point range he shot 35% on catch-oot threes and 30% on pull-up threes this is a very small sample size of course he also shot 25% from the corners but he shot 35 1.5% above the break and I will say this about his efficiency earlier in the season he was extremely inefficient and he was struggling to make shots but later in the season when he got to play a little bit more those couple games down the stretch in the last month or two where he was able to really play and the efficiency started to really come around and for a guard I mean it’s like what can you expect if you put a young shooting guard out there and he doesn’t play that much how do you expect him to be extremely efficient from three you don’t so it’s really not a problem in my opinion that he wasn’t crazy efficient because he’s been able to show the ability to be efficient and whenever he is hot he gets hot like he is an absolute sniper the next thing about his shooting ability that I really want to hone in on real quick is his mid-range game it just opens up the floor so much like when I was talking about in the pick and roll earlier like it really does help out the fact that you have to guard him at all three level you can’t just sag off and wait for him to go to the paint or shoot a little floater he’s going to hit you with a nice low fadeaway like he has a really nice mid-range game he’s got fadeaways floaters pull-ups he’s got all that and in my opinion it looks very Devin Bookeresque just kind of the way he weaves in and out of traffic and gets a shot off wherever he wants it i just feel like Deon Booker would be like the best comparison I can give you now over to finishing i don’t have too much to say about his finishing abilities but things that I do have to say they’re very good he is very crafty around the rim i like it a lot he’s got nice reverse layups he can finish with his left his right hand i even seen this guy shooting a hook shot now you might be thinking for a smaller guard it’s going to be harder for him to finish at the rim in his case I don’t really feel like that’s a problem because this bag is just so deep like I just said i mean like this guy can even shoot a hook shot but yeah personally I don’t really feel like it’s a problem in the restricted area he shot 62 1.5% small sample size of course but he was very efficient inside if you’re still here and to join the video make sure to hit that like button it helps out a smaller channel out like myself a lot more than you realize now the most underrated part about Reed Shepard’s game is the defense i’m not going to lie i actually think he’s a good defender now I’m not talking about one-on-one point of attack defense i’m standing in front of you i’m going to lock you down that’s not what I’m talking about i’m talking about team defense you know how like if you were a coach you would want all of your guys on the floor to be good help defenders have good hands defensively not foul too much play solid one-on-one defense be able to block some shots he does all of those things he’s got really good hands defensively even though he’s got short arms he finds ways to get in the passing lanes he’s a pesky help defender he uses those hands and his good IQ to get in on plays and balls that he probably shouldn’t and I love the fact that he’s always willing to gamble a little bit he does a great job at poking the ball out from behind the offensive player and we got to see him do that a lot throughout the season and then kind of like I just said he’s not terrible in one-on-one defense situations like whenever they played the Thunder and he had like 25 points he was guarding Shay he was guarding JDub like he was actually taking responsibility for these guys but I never heard anybody talk about Reed Shepard’s defense so I wanted to make sure that I highlighted that today because I do feel like he’s a good defender um I don’t have any numbers to give you and maybe an advanced stats nerd will come up here and be like he’s actually a really terrible defender i don’t care watch games then tell me i personally think he’s a good defender last thing when it comes to defense and rebounding and such for his size he is actually a very solid rebounder now to my miscellaneous things a couple things I want to expand on um I I mentioned a minute ago how he’s willing to gamble defensively but I like the fact that he’s willing to gamble offensively as well making tough passes tough shots stuff like that when he actually played like those five games where he played more than like 20 minutes and he was actually on the floor making an impact I didn’t feel like they used him enough and he is very effective with the ball in his hands but they were using him off the ball more and I just felt like they shouldn’t do that like why do that jaylen Green and Reed Shepard were on the floor at the same time and Reed Shepard was just playing off the ball waiting for catch and shoot opportunities which he can do which is great but it was just Jaylen Green trying to get to the basket every time and then Jaylen Green goes out of the game and Reed Shepard is the main ball handler and they get more of everybody involved because it goes into a slower style offense more of a pick and roll type and I feel like 418 that’s just better like what I’m about to say is crazy like what I’m about to say is crazy but if I had to pick today Reed Shepard or Jaylen Green I would much rather Reed Shepard today i’m not talking about like potential who’s going to be better who could be more of a a well-rounded NBA player i’m talking about right now at this very second if I’m playing a basketball game I want Reed Shepard not Jaylen Green i just I just love the fact that he has great vision and great poise like Reed Shepard offensively he does everything that you want he can shoot the ball get to the basket get to the mid-range good passes all that stuff and I’m saying this again because there were times where he actually got to play but they weren’t using him on the ball yes he’s effective off the ball but he is more effective with the ball in his hands because all the all of the things that I’ve mentioned earlier he can finish he does the thing he relocates off the ball so well he can get in catch and shoot opportunities even as a ball handler which is weird to say but that’s what I’m talking about with the relocating stuff he can catch fire and shoot deep threes like you have to guard him everywhere on the floor and me personally I like it more than a Jaylen Green type guy who’s just really trying to get their buckets and if they’re not getting their buckets then they’re not really impacting the game all that but that much i’m not saying that Jaylen Green doesn’t impact the game at all if he doesn’t have the ball in his hands but I’m just saying Reed Shepard would impact the game more without the ball in his hands and more with the ball in his hands so now continuing I actually had a couple more things that I wanted to talk about that I didn’t realize um a couple bad turnovers here and there but again he’s a rookie that’s okay i don’t care i guess I kind of just talked about this already but he is I think perfectly selfish and unselfish he knows when he needs to put his head down and get to the basket knows when he needs to put his head down and get a bucket and he knows when he needs to make a good play and be a point guard i like that a lot and the very last thing that I have that I want to talk about for Reed Shepard is he needs to just keep doing what he was doing just at a more efficient rate if he can catch fire and shoot these threes and playmake and play solid defense and do all these things with more minutes and more opportunity next season and he does it efficiently then he’s going to be a really good player am I gassing him a little bit right now yeah that’s the whole point i might change my name to basketball optimism because all these guys I make videos about I think they’re actually going to be good i like I’m legitimately convinced that Reed Shepard could be a all-star caliber point guard but only time will tell so we don’t know what’s going to happen i don’t know what’s going to happen you don’t know what’s going to happen time will tell us now to the last segment of the day if you’re not familiar it’s my favorite segment of the day it’s the best segment of the day it’s the comment of the day the comment of the day is my favorite comment from the previous video can be a topic a question a statement can be about basketball life sports I don’t care my favorite comment is the comment of the day today’s comment of the day is going to be from style exe he’s talking about VJ Edgecom he is not a Hornets fan but he feels like he’d be perfect next level melo ball covers for him defensively he has a relatively high floor which I think they need after picking saloon vj has NBA skills off rip him Melo Brandon Miller running in transition sounds pretty fun also I couldn’t agree more if VJ Edgecomb ends up in Charlotte which I do honestly think that he will I think that would be one of the better situations for VJ obviously um for him being a really good defensive player him going to a better defensive team like Cooper Flag situation going to the Mavericks that’s going to make the defense just even better just to the fact that he doesn’t have to cover for other people he’s just adding on to it so yes he’s going to have to cover a little bit for LaMelo and other guys on the Charlotte Hornets um but still it’s a very good situation they get up in transition like you mentioned bj can score at all three levels lamelo as well Brandon Miller as well like offensively they’re going to be very fun and he also just adds exactly what they need defensively so I think it’s a perfect fit if he were to end up in Charlotte again which he should thank you very much for the comment style EXE shout out to you i appreciate you very much and I don’t really have a whole lot else to say for today’s video i have no idea what the next episode is going to be about another NBA video next i’m not really sure who yet but I’m going to figure something out yeah I’m not really sure well I guess we’ll just wrap it up here if you made it to the end of the video I appreciate you very much you can hit the like the comment the sub post notifications if that’s what you want you don’t have to do any of them if you don’t want free will but I would appreciate it if you did so one last time thank you for staying in the video and I’mma see you on the next one man peace out

ayy glad i had a good comment lmao, i appreciate the type of content you put out (been binge watching after the gym as im a new sub) and i like that you give a spotlight to the young players/players that maybe some ball fans overlook and you do it positively, feel like so many people just highlight negatives and do hot takes off that or just talking about the same players everyone else does which just gets kinda stale, ur content is refreshing and i greatly appreciate what you put out, i also agree about reed sheppard, i think he just didnt play a ton cus the rockets have SO MUCH young talent its actually kinda crazy, i think his skillset has more layers compared to jalen green who i also like but yea if his shot isnt falling, hes just kinda there, the playoffs was pretty rough for him barring one game when jimmy was out
I hope we don't trade him
Sheppard needs to turn it around he really looked lost last year. He looked like a defensive liability and he was really hesitant to shoot his shot wasn’t that great like when he was in college.
Come on over to the suns in a kd trade my guy! See u soon in purple and orange! 🙂
I think he'll improve slowly and by year 4, he'll be an impact player.
Already, his release around the rim is less predictable (and more efficient) than Fred's. I WOULD NEVER TRADE HIM at this point. Untouchable IMO.
Hats crooked bro.
I don’t doubt his skill. I doubt his mentality. At the beginning of the year when he was getting some minutes he was playing timid.
Delusional bro. He’s Pod 2.0. A nice spot starter or 6th man type. Should have been taken in the 20s not 3 overall
Trade Jalen Green and Cam Whitmore for another big and the Rockets win the chip in 25/26
Bucks need to trade both giannis & dame. Build around a trade for Reed, maybe whitmore or smith some picks for giannis.
Rockets do not need to trade anyone right now,
Keep Jalen, he’s on the hot seat this year, but out of all the haters I actually believe in Jalen. It’s his personal life with the old hag he got pregnant that’s rendering his potential.
Alpi, Thompson, Easton, Jabari and Shepard (untouchable)
Maybe trade but more on keeping them is , Whitmore, Holiday, and maybe our 10th pick if we get homie from Illinois if he’s still on the board
Most importantly, we don’t need to trade for a washed player who will screw our salary cap
He's a poor man's Ben Gordon, can't defend to save his life, and he's not efficient enough to be a starter
Orlando give 16th pick this year and Anthony black in return for reed Sheppard
this random af but u lowkey look like zayn
Sheppard a great scorer but one of the worst defenders i’ve seen in a while
If you’re trading this kid it’s either in a package for Giannis, Lamelo, or some other core piece. Wouldn’t even put him in for KD. This kid is a future star PG. Watch his starts last year too, they are all legit.
He might be talented u say Devin booker comp Devin booker is 6 6 and sucks at defense amen Thompson won’t be able to cover for him when fox and castle are playing
Yeahhh never gonna shit on a 19 year old coming onto a stacked #2 west team and he’s got IT..he’s a baller..unless you’re getting both Giannis and booker he should never be moved…everrrrr..he’s a big part of what the next evolution of this rockets team will be next year 🤘🤘🤘

Defense liability
Just Imagine if he has longer arms
I Agree reed is going to be awesome
Reed over green not crazy at all, I’m over green inconsistency fr!
Actually, as it can not be worst than what we think, it’s most probably better 😂
2:40 but Jalen Green got major minutes and still inefficient
FIRST VIDEO IVE EVER SEEN OF YOURS. GOOD SHIT DUDE. IM SUBSCRIBING.
Rockets have already stated Reed will have a much expanded role next season, so look forward to that.
Nothing crazy stated. Reed > Green. The rockets got 2nd in spite of green and we underused Reed. Our future backcourt is Amen and Reed.
Everybody want our players 😂
He shot terrible early on and they tried to get him going.. after trip to G league and time off for injury, he looked a lot more comfotable. I think he will be a Hall a Famer one day
I get they wanted to win last season but who cares about a 2 seed when they lose in round 1? They should have played Reed more from the get go, he was everyone’s preseason pick for rookie of the year yet he had to play dominant g league ball while vanFleet shoots 34% from 3. Reed should be this teams starting pg or trade him. Hes that good.
New Luka just dropped
This is literally Matt Maloney. Yall youngsters dont even know!!
Reed was a very good rookie✅ but sheesh, you can swear this guy was Kobe Bryant with all the hype
He plays just like d book
i agree he is a good defender
Bro you glazing shepherd way too hard. I watched every game of the season and reed was mostly sub par whenever he played. For every nice play he made he got destroyed on defense when it came to defending the rim. In truth, the only thing he did well on defense was make steals🤷🏾♂️
We have Devon Booker at home 😂
Reed is the key! Reminds me of when the Warriors were choosing between Ellis and Curry. Jalen gotta go, it's Reed time.
I’m a UK fan so I have seen Reed and Booker. Reed has better court vision and has the potential to be the best guard to come out of KY in the last 20 years. If you look at the NBA that saying a lot. SGA Herro ect. What Reed needs is reps and a coach who believes in him. He’s going to make mistakes but he learns fast. Rockets if you’re not willing to make the investment please trade him. He got to much potential to ride your bench for another year
MODERN DAY MARK PRICE
I think it's fairly obvious he's an asset on offense. The criticism of his defense is fair, he will be hunted on defense. Whether he can make up for that on offense I don't know but I'm all for giving all our young guys an extended chance. I hope they don't trade for anyone personally and keep as much as they can.
Reed is basically FVV 2.0 😂
I hope Reed will get more playing time this coming season. He has so much potential but with a stacked team, it's hard to get minutes. You hit it on the spot with Jalen Green! I would trade Jalen and keep Reed.
Why do most white ppl GROSSLY slurp and slob down all white players and over hype them like they're a top 5 player ever? Reed Sheppard isn't a good player. Stop the bullsht. You sound like Doris Berks describing TJ McConnel and Alex Caruso like they're the best players on the courts saying "excellent, awesome, perfect" whenever they do something temporarily at the same level as a average starter? Like, NONE OF THESE GUYS ARE GREAT. NONE OF THEM! NONE OF THEM START.
Pssshhh this guy don’t know hoops, should definitely not have a channel if he is sayin you should take Reed Sheppard over Jalen Green. Their explosiveness and one on one defense are on two completely different universes. Can Reed be a great point guard? sure, but Jalen can be a better 2 guard. Golden state had to double team Jalen at the top of the arc to take him out of the series. Reed Sheppard hasn’t even seen elite one on one defense in the playoffs. Play Jalen one on one and we saw he dropped 38.
I would disagree that Reed is a good 1 on 1 defender right now. And that is one of the reasons the Rockets did not use him in the playoff stretch. However he only needs 3 simple things to get there. 1st – Experience, which he will get next season regardless of which team he's on. 2nd, improved lateral quickness, which is something that can be worked on in the offseason with personal trainers, and 3rd, just generic overall strength.
This is not a unique thing to Sheppard though, nearly all new players in the league need to work on these 3 things to be able to defend at an NBA level, it just takes players different amount of time to get there.
He is not athletic and plays like he is still in high school. That is why he did not get playing time as a rookie
