Why the Warriors’ System Might Be Broken

Why the Warriors’ System Might Be Broken

with all due respect to the player development program and the young guys no one is in the stratosphere of being the athlete Jonathan Caminges I get it it’s a specialized system you gotta play to it everybody with the warriors including Jimmy Butler’s living in Steph Curry’s world that’s not the wrong thing it should be that way I love Steve Kerr as a coach I think he’s one of the best in the game this is not his finest moment as handling a Jonathan Kuminga let’s start with the Warriors and and their big off season as it relates to Jonathan Kominga um what do you think his value is to the warriors and then perhaps to the right team around the league that looks at him and may want to acquire him like how how vital is he to what the warriors are are are wanting to do this offseason well it’s he’s important and he’s important for a way that I don’t think most people understand like I heard some I heard Ahem I was talking to somebody the other day I should say and what I was kind what was said to me regarding Kamega is that the Warriors need to be careful and not sign up for too cheap a deal and letting him go find a deal out there may be the right move for them because it could help facilitate some kind of trying sign and trade deal they’re still under the the uh 1st apron as of right now and they can go facilitate some kind of sign and trade deal but for the warriors to bring be able to bring in the kind of player they would like to bring in for him it can’t be coming at 14 million a year there’s just the guy that’s gonna help them isn’t out there for that price it’s gonna have to be 20 or higher it it my estimation is that it would probably land somewhere in anywhere from 22 to 30 I think 30 is rich I think 20 to 22 is a good number for him I wouldn’t balk at 25 but I I think Caminga has got value out there in spite of the warriors continued efforts to devalue him he’s got value out there and there’s a you know a young team that may have a veteran that could come in and help the warriors that may want to execute some kind of sign and trade for him because if I’m a young team and I’m looking to add pieces and the warriors don’t want this guy anymore I you know if I’m the Utah Jazz if I’m the Washington Wizards you know he’s worth the conversation to take you know kind of kick the tires on him and add to a young core as a guy that’s played in some playoff games is a high end athlete and has proven he can be a really good scorer on an NBA level like you know there’s a lot of strength to Kamenga’s game and and I think you know at times it was a puzzle it was puzzling to me that Steve Kerr buried him in the way that he did but Kamenga is vital to what the warriors are gonna do here and I just don’t know that they can keep him because I you know they’re it’s been a there’s a lot of baggage there between him and Steve Kerr and I and if I’m like Dunleavy and I’m that front office and in the Laker I don’t necessarily trust Steve Kerr if I’m gonna pay coming a lot of money to play him in a way that’s gonna justify the amount of money that coming is gonna command no doubt BG and that’s that’s what I wanna also piggyback on because I told Stan and the listeners I got Steve Kerr Top 5 coach but the bottom line is when Curry went out I saw a bunch of warriors sometimes even Jimmy Butler BG not being able to get their shot and here goes Kamenga thrust it into a game 3 games and we got a lot of people saying oh they didn’t win any one of them I don’t care about that from a Caminga standpoint you ask Naz Reed and the rest of the gang BG it felt like they they couldn’t stop them at times and I double back to was and you tell me if it’s too strong was that a bad look for Curry and the warriors that that guy that did what he did in 3 playoff games BG was basically left for dead it is a bad Daryl I don’t think it’s too strong it’s a bad look and it’s a bad look on a variety of levels it’s a bad look because when you look at who the warriors are bringing off the bench with all due respect to their player development program and the young guys no one is in the stratosphere of being the athlete Jonathan Coming is furthermore for the warriors in such great shape with bench scoring that they could afford to keep this guy on the bench who could come out in 15 to 20 minutes and give you 12 to 15 points in a game and was that kind of transition threat when you want to go play fast I get the fact that at times he looked off Steph Curry and that is a mortal sin when you play for the warriors by the same token if that’s your largest criticism and your largest concern of him you know Curry’s not playing 46 minutes a game he’s gonna play 34 minutes a game you can’t stagger coming in and in there on the other minutes you know having a with Curry on the bench certainly you need more scoring to have a guy that’s willing to take the ball to the basket and and try to be a primary scorer for you I I just to me I would have used him so much differently and found a way to harness that athleticism and that talent and that scoring ability Steve Kerr just completely dismissing him because he wasn’t necessarily fitting into and I’m using air quotes here the system I get it it’s listen it’s a specialized system you gotta play to it and you’re living everybody with the warriors including Jimmy Butler’s living in Steph Curry’s world that’s not the wrong thing it should be that way with all that said Steve Kerr’s got to manage a roster enough that he’s able to get something out of a kid with this kind of talent and I agree with that I love Steve Kerr as a coach I think he’s one of the best in the game this is not his finest moment as handling a Jonathan Kuminga hmm I wanna jam two things in here one is obviously Giannis as a big part of the uh you know the free agent season if you will uh Kevin Durant is being talked about as someone Phoenix is willing to move but I did know and and those are two names that the warrior fans would absolutely be interested in but as you started the show you thought you you said a lot of perhaps moves on the margins um Giannis or Durant or any big boy possibility for the warriors this uh this summer let’s start with the rant the rant made it clear warriors went after him before they traded for Jimmy Butler the trade deadline Kevin Durant didn’t want to come back to Golden State and the thing is this first of all no one Golden State won’t trade for him if he doesn’t want to be there and and by the way that’s done leaving the Lakers that’s smart if he doesn’t want to be there you’re only asking for trouble trying to bring him in and so he’s not gonna end up going to a place that he doesn’t necessarily want to go I don’t think the Suns are gonna do that to him I think the Suns got left with egg on their face and got embarrassed when they shocked him behind his back and I think at this stage of the game they would rather not look to incite him anymore plus if you know he doesn’t want to go to a place you’d be crazy to trade for him because you know what he can be when he’s miserable the Giannis thing’s a little bit different and I still don’t think the warriors are gonna be in the mix for Giannis listen I I see the Giannis market this way let’s start with this I’m not positive Giannis is gonna be out in the market somebody made a point to me couple bills made this point to me the Bucks have a brand new downtown arena that Fox served form if you go make a deal and any deal they the Yanis is the only card they have to play you go make any deal you make with Yanis is gonna have to be draft pick heavy but if it’s draft pick it means you’re taking a major step back and the Bucks are gonna be in for a couple of lean years with no one really to go see in that building I just wonder if this iteration of Bucks ownership has the stomach for that the other thing is does Giannis wanna ask out you know listen if I’m Giannis and I’m the Bucks both sides I think it’s time for a parting of the ways and it’s best for be honest I think it’s best for the Bucks the Bucks don’t have any other tradeable assets if they’re gonna go into a rebuild you can do this now when Giannis’s value is at its peak so I I think it’s but I don’t think either side maybe has the stomach to wanna do this so we have to see what happens if let’s then let’s go to the Bucks and Giannis make the decision that they’re gonna move on from Giannis right now there’s three teams that can blow everybody out of the water and the warriors aren’t one of them it’s Houston it’s San Antonio it’s Oklahoma City Oklahoma City is about to play an NBA final tomorrow night I don’t think they’re gonna be kicking it tyres on Yannis unless they lose to Indiana which I don’t think it’s a likely scenario hmm Houston and San Antonio can have him if they want him and and I think both would want him and both would pony up very big for him the thing is they can pony up more than the warriors the other thing is this Giannis is gonna you know he’ll have a list of places that he’s willing to go to I my sneaking suspicion is that place is gonna be that is that list is gonna be Eastern Conference heavy because the Eastern Conference with the Celtics and a gap here right now it’s there for the taking it’s there for the taking for a team like Cleveland Indiana obviously went to the Eastern Conference this year they’ll be viable again next year it’s there for the taking for New York who made it to a conference final it’s there for the taking so Giannis may want to direct him his way to one of those Eastern Conference teams to give him an easier path to go to the finals the west is going to be brutal next year so it’s quite possible he wants to stay in the east and the other thing is Milwaukee may say hey we don’t want to trade you to this team but I don’t know at this stage with that relationship which has been a very good relationship relationship over time the Bucks ownership and Giannis I don’t think if the Bucks can get the right kind of package I don’t know that they’re gonna want to stick it to Giannis to send him to a place he doesn’t want to go but I just I think all of these things I’m painting make it a remote possibility that he ends up on the warriors I wouldn’t rule anything out because you crazy stuff happens in this league every day as we saw yesterday I I wouldn’t rule anything out but I I would tell you I think it’s remote that he ends up with the warriors BJ you are the man I I feel like you’re my priest and these are confessions cause this is stuff I’ve been holding on to and my partner you know he he gives me grief but you mentioned Jimmy Butler and the trade was phenomenal it was but BJ I’m upset and I’m upset he had 26 field goal attempts in Game 3 and 4 and five combined 9 and 11 20 in two games when this team was starving for somebody to do something with the ball am I wrong to come down this road and ask what what was going on that that’s not acceptable 20 field goal attempts in two playoff games what what happened to playoff Jimmy so now this is my colleague Eddie Johnson’s big complaint with Jimmy Butler it’s the random offensive stating where he just doesn’t try to apply his will to a game this is and and so to answer your question Dale no you’re not crazy for being annoyed by it but you can’t be outraged by it either and I’ll tell you why because this is the Jimmy Butler experience this is part of what he does he will have these moments whether it’s a playoff game or a non playoff game but more likely in a playoff game where he gets it going and he will start to dominate but he’s also an older player and there’s gonna be nights where his legs aren’t there like they are other nights he doesn’t necessarily push the issue maybe he should and certainly on on you know with the games you’re referring to against Minnesota with Steph Curry up get out there and take shots dude I like who else is taking those shots if you’re not taking them like you gotta impose your will in the game a little bit so I hear you with your frustration but also one thing I’ve Learned about Jimmy Butler over the years Jimmy Butler’s not gonna change Jimmy Butler’s got he’s got a big ego he’s a little fragile emotionally he needs to have his backside kissed uh and he needs to be paid a lot of money or he’s gonna be unhappy now listen most of those things are happening here with the Warriors and I think next year with him making big money I think you will see a the best version of Jimmy Butler that’s available for the warriors next year what happens next summer when all of a sudden and he decides he wants another contract extension well that’s a different ball game we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it but I do think you’ll see the right kind of year out of Butler but again nothing changes next year for the warriors you want to advance in the playoffs and have a chance it’s got to be Butler Green and Curry all three of them healthy on the floor

What’s Really Going On With the Warriors’ Development Strategy?
Steiny & Guru, together with Brian Geltzeiler, break down a complicated topic: has Golden State’s player development failed some of its young talent? The conversation dives into how some players just haven’t fit the system, and how the Warriors may be facing a tough road if things don’t shift soon.

They also touch on how other teams, like the Bucks, are entering leaner years — and what that means for competitive balance. Candid, honest, and unfiltered.

  1. Finally! This is everything we’ve been trying to say all season long. Thankfully, Kerr was exposed. And the org will bear the consequences of not bringing in a different coach right now, because they already knew and now everyone else knows also.

GSW will become what the Suns were this year. Not even playin team and it will be ownership’s fault.

  2. Kerr a great coach? Or was he just lucky to hitch his wagon to the Curry express? This Kuminga situation gives a weird vibe

  3. What do you mean "MiGHT". It is obviously broken for a long time. Everything is centered around Steph and everyone else are only role players.

  4. It is Broken Poole and Kuminga could have tooken over curry and crew but they didint have patience to wait, they wanted to be stars to soon and they working for stats and not chips.

  5. Durant doesn’t want to play for Kerr. He criticized the motion offense and its effectiveness as you move through the playoffs.

  6. Listen dude NONE OF YOU TRULY KNOWS ANYTHING!! The extra reaching for something to talk about is insane!! The more yall talk the more like idiots you sound 😂😂😂😂 I mean not 1 damn fact!! Terrible!!

  7. STEVE KERR IS THE PROBLEM . A GOOD COACH DOESN'T SIT ON THE BENCH ,NOT MOTIVATING HIS PLAYER NOT KNOWING MATCH UP , THIS IS FALLING BECAUSE OF KERR💯

  8. I noticed the Kuminga haters tend to be on the emotional side. Lots of strong feelings in their comments. Why is that? 🧐

  9. I have been saying this for a long time. Steve Kerr has been the problem. Quite a lot of people wanted him gone and have a different head coach. Mike Brown should be top candidate

  10. If Steve Kerr is a top 5 coach, why wasn't he able to coach his team to 1 win without Steph Curry?

  11. KD is not coming to play with Draymond man jimmy didn’t even wanna come to the warriors it took 50-60 million over his worth to get him to sign an extension

  12. Kerr mis managed JK in my opinion too. Curry should not have played the minutes that he did which may have contributed to his injury. JK playing when Curry rests. Kerr says 6:33 No no no

  13. Key here!!!! Steve Kerr has got to go!!! Resting on Steph too long. Durant, Poole, Now Kuminga, couldn't handle the talent, lockeroom whatever it took!!! Warrior will not make playoffs with Kerr ever again. He had 4 years to add Kuminga to the Warrior arsenal, He benched a player who scored 30 in a playoff off game in 25 minutes, give him 35 he scores 45??? Kerr let his ego get in the way, making excuses, still in the problem, lately why Kuminga can't play…lmao. If he had done his job, Warriors would be playing The pacers!!!! Kuminga will 5ake the Steph led Warriors to the promised land.. Kuminga should walk after being disrespected. Don't go back for more. My mind, Kuminga is more important than Kerr will ever be. Mike Brown will win the Warriors a championship

  14. That’s is why when Steph is injured they look lost. Kerr has to utilize his other players talents into their offense

  15. I don't blame KD for not wanting to come back. Steph gets all the credit when things go well and he gets all the blame when things go poorly.

  16. Kerr, Steph, and Green are almost done! Maybe 2 more years tops. Will see how the warriors will be then. A lot of warriors fans sound very entitled , you have won 4 championships recently with these guys. It’s the waning days of a dynastic era. Ask me a bulls fan how it’s feels to keep on waiting after seeing the glory and dominate years of MJ and those 90s bulls!

  17. I get that people need to keep peace with the Warriors organization, but the increasingly insane avoidance of the elephant in the room is unsustainable as far as maintaining credibility and relevance.

  18. Your guest is exceptionally brilliant, knowledgeable and candid. He is one of the few analysts that has said the Truth regarding JK and Coach Kerr debacle. Stay strong BG❤❤❤❤

  19. One difference between Wiggins and JK is that Wiggs played within the system. He's also a much better defender, a smarter defender. If JK could or would do that, he'd have his playing time and his extension because that's what they gave Wiggs, AFTER he showed himself to be the second best player on a championship team. Wiggs showed that he could give you 40 on any given night too. I just don't think Kerr or the rest of the team are impressed with JKs basketball IQ. And I agree. And as for athleticism and scoring ability, ask Zach LaVine how well that translates into winning.

  20. Absolutely! Play the guy who had the worst net rating for the year by far. It’s criminal to not do so. And let’s find a competent NBA coach can we? Why we need to look no further than the geniuses on this comments board. Find the one where the drool is coming out of their mouth evenly on both sides and start with him.😅

  21. Fire Kerr and bring someone in that can figure it out Kerr is going to retire after curry retires

  22. Kuminga want the ball 89% of the time he is not MJ .
Everytime he go to the rim he always ask for a foul

  23. Kuminga can be a much better asset if they could figure out how to use them. But, if he just can't fit, we must get someone who is an impact player. We just don't have the greatest lineup. Face it.

  24. Here is my take, Kerr isnt a top five if he ever was lost it by what he has done the last few year. Narrow minded, stubborn to the core. Take JK, Ive seen him play up close and in person he has his plus and minus regardless a guy who can get you a quick 10, and yet he gets DNP.
There is a much bigger picture here with the two and Moody isnt too far behind.
I can list the time and place it soured on JK, this isnt about basketball it is personal with Kerr. The fact he has wasted 3 years of Curry service just shows the type of coach and person he is, outside of JK unwilling to deviate his offense from the sun.
Choice we have none listen to the two how they talk about Kerr, as if he has the only and final say.

  25. The Warriors need to go after Matas Buzelis and Coby White for Kuminga + pick. All these $50M players is hot air banter and a misappropriation of funds under this new CBA. We should even consider Matas & Lonzo…all I know is we need Matas

  26. Finally (after 3 years), someone is calling out Kerr's minimal use of Kuminga (and Moody for that matter) on major media! Its been left up to Cyrus Satzas (sp) and Jim Park to dare to criticize Kerr. Anthony Lamb, Ty Jerome, GP II (still a good iso defender coming off the bench), Kyle Anderson et al should never have played in front of Kuminga and Moody. Especially if its clear that your in 10th place.
Kuminga's defense is sometimes hit or miss, but so was a certain Stef Curry's D. So make plays around that like you did for Curry. When, Kuminga plays 30 min or more, the W's have a decent record.
Great point by the guest, that Stef won't be playing 48 mins a game, so play Kuminga alternated with Stef until they can develop some chemistry. Stef should be playing less mins at this point. I think one of the contributing factors to his hamstring injury was the fact that he was playing 35-40 mins a game every other day for the last 3 weeks. Stef mins should be 25-30, this would leave almost half the game for Kuminga-time (with a little bit of overlap).
The benching of Kuminga was a totally unnecessary provocation; because Kerr benched Kuminga (the leading scorer against Houston this season) for the last 2 games the season, we ended up having to play every-other day, and losing our second leading scorer (points per min), and because they almost totally caved Kuminga's value, if they're going to trade him.
Play Him or Trade Him (for his own good)!

Question; isn't it true that if we trade Kuminga before the trade deadline, that we only recoup half of his value back in a trade? If so, play him 35-40 mins a game and rest Stef for the first half of the season. Trade him then (because Kerr will never play him) for maximum value.

  27. Trade Kuminga + picks for Gary Trent Jr( 50% 3s, 2.6 steal/game in the playoffs) 2nd option: Derrick White

    Starter/Closer

    C – Post

    PF – Green

    SF – Butler

    SG – Trent Jr

    PG – Curry

    2nd lineup

    C – Looney

    PF – Jackson-Davis

    SF – Moody

    SG – Heild

    PG – Podziemski

  28. Kerr blew it. KUMINGA, Poole, Jordan Bell, James Wiseman….. I'm surprised Looney is still around but he only makes 5M.

  29. A lot of us have been saying this about Kerr and his midget motion offense and lack of player development for years. Also, the team has had a problem evaluating talent in the draft. They took James Wiseman over Tyrese Haliburton for godsakes. Kerr said he would not have drafter Anthony Edwards if he had the chance. Kerr is obviously lost if he doesn't or can't revolve the offense around Curry. That was evident when Curry went down in the playoffs. Does Kerr even plan for something like that? Nope. He doesn't even run the pick and roll very much using Curry who is a great screener. As time goes on others will see that Kerr had his day and it's long gone. The NBA has passed him by with bigs who can shoot threes and defend. Kerr has no answer. He should have never been signed to that extension.
