game on the trade market might not be on the trade market after all giannis Antenna Kmpo reportedly said this about the finals on a trip to Brazil hope I quote “I hope to be back soon with the Bucks.” With the Bucks in case you missed it Wendy had this to say yesterday here about the future of Giannis right now there is no Giannis Atenkmpo trade market there is no Jans Tennakoupo trade discussions he has not asked for it the Bucks are not looking to trade him so that was Wendy yesterday this is Monica that’s Allan and Jay Will should I be now acting under the assumption that Giannis is going to be on the Bucks next year what were his words again just so I can clarify reportedly and now again now this is a man whose primary language is Greek and he’s speaking to people whose primary language is Portuguese and it’s all being translated into English so there’s a there’s a there’s a great deal of uncertainty about whether you know in this age of Google Translate wow but what he apparently said is the finals are different i hope to be back soon with the Bucks all right so the operative word is hope hope to me is not a commitment hope to me is a prayer i hope I could be the president of the United States doesn’t mean that I’m going down to DC and I’m renting out office space right now okay like to me that that feels like it’s a positioning because Giannis’s brand is uniquely different than the like of a KD or LeBron James like he’s not going to say “Hey I’m I’m going to take my talents to South Beach or he’s not going to be like KD that the undermining of people on social media or the hard things about he said about people before.” He’s always going to be the loyalist to a fault until he isn’t so what Wendy said I think it’s correct the market has to bear the right opportunity but to me that is not a commitment that’s just semi saying “Hey look I want to be here until I don’t want to be here anymore.” Okay so let’s see what happens we’ve been acting under the assumption this would have to be done by the draft which is just a few weeks away but doesn’t have to be these things can be done anytime that they that they get done let’s live in a world where Giannis isn’t looking to get out of Milwaukee immediately we have speculated so much about the Knicks and their future and Monica and Allen you know them so well does this mean Kevin Durant goes directly into the front burner kevin Durant to the Knicks is that the right thing should it happen i I don’t know if that really follows the plan in New York when it comes to continuity of their roster they’ve already changed the coach and we’ll see what happens with whoever they hire but to now all of a sudden make a trade for a mega star who makes $54 million at 37 years old who’s going to want a contract extension it’s going to cost you players it’s going to mess up more of that continuity you’re looking for you have a team that got to the conference finals and you’d have to literally blow up more of that roster to make a big move but I’ll say this Monica if you’re looking at the East you take a swing now to try to win a championship and that’s the kind of swing you’d have to take well on both of these guys whether you talk about Giannis or KD what position are you going to be in after you acquire them that’s the thing that stands out to me like we ask is the Bucks the best place for Giannis well there’s continuity there he knows that roster he’s familiar there he’s invested in the community if he were to go to the Knicks what would that look like would it look like he and Dame in terms of the stars that they had in Milwaukee just make it New York and so I don’t I think New York is in a good position my personal philosophy Greeny on basketball is year one is very tough for it to work which is why Carlanthony Town Sounds and Jaylen Brunson this year were so successful i’m with Han the coaching change is going to be big enough obviously you made this move because you believe that the next guy can get more out of that roster does more equal back to the Eastern Conference Finals well if you’re Leon Rose like you’re not going to make any pivot right now you’re still going to see what the market and the fruits can bear right so it’s not like hey so what does that mean well because Giannis isn’t off the table why is Giannis all of a sudden off the table because cuz a report comes out and he says I hope I can win a championship with the Bucks like who knows who you can get as a coach who knows what the what you’re giving up i think there’s a lot of things still on the plate for the New York Knicks right now i guess what I’m saying is their best chance the Knicks are as allin as a franchise can possibly be right you go to the conference final and you fire the coach you’re saying we think we’re on the on the doorstep are they better off keeping the roster together as it is i’m team keep say keep I’m team keep the roster because your coaching change is going to be a big enough change right like why did you change the coaching are they good enough to win the championship as they are currently as they are generally constituted as that’s why whatever you’re going to do has to be about what the weaknesses were which is the depth of this team and if you’re going to make a move to me that’s where you focus a lot of whatever you’ve got left to spend in the margins you say but let’s clarify keep your core roster support staff support bench guys yes if Giannis is available and he I’ve said this and he says New York’s a place I want to go I’m sorry I’ll just ask you carthan Towns Jaylen Brunson incredible players will their bodies hold up for another incredible run it’s a legitimate the duo to take them over the top that’s a New York team who’s got a superstar and now let’s talk about a New York team that doesn’t have a coach the Knicks requested permission to speak to Eay Udoka and Chris Finch for their open head coaching job and were denied on both counts this amid reports that Jason Kidd also would not be allowed to come meet with them listen to PJ Carissimo’s take just that’s the Knicks they they don’t know what they’re doing they’re their own worst enemy they’ve been their own worst enemy the last two years been the best excitement uh what well I I don’t know the numbers i should I think he went to the playoffs four straight times after they don’t go for like seven years or eight years that was PJ with our buddy Ryan Rousilo on on Rousilo’s podcast on the Ringer so there he is basically saying the Knicks had a good thing going they move away from Tibs because you assume the grass is going to be greener somewhere else and now I’ve got reporting that says they’ve been denied permission to talk to Udoka and denied permission to talk to Finch and Shams reported last night that if they officially request permission to talk to Jason Kidd which according to Shams they’ve not yet that they will be denied that as well so Jay what the actual heck is going on with the next coaching situation so I’m going to tell everybody here to calm down cuz I know what people are going to try to make it what I’ve known Leon Rose for over 20 years i would be shocked if you do not have a list of individuals you do not let go of Tom Tibido if you don’t know to give a definitive answer on one of the individuals on your list there is a process and a sequencing that you go through so I get that we catch wind of things post things happening but there is no doubt in my mind that Leon Rose and Worldwide West do not have an option out there that is a a definitive yes for the answer of the New York Knicks moving forward there has to be you don’t let go of Tibs if you don’t have a definitive yes you hold on to him you don’t make the move without having a move Grinny it’s not really it’s not logical and I’ll jump in and say this and I know what PJ was saying there about like he’s kind of given the suggestion that it’s very on brand for the Knicks it might be when you look at the body of the last 25 years of this franchise and how it’s operating but since Leon Rose has taken over you have to admit the Knicks have functioned like a a a working franchise that knows what it’s doing that as Jay’s saying has a plan so you got to remove the past history and look at who’s in charge right now and how he’s run things and all you’ve got to say is okay you’re being denied access to coaches that you’d only ask for permission if you knew they had interest so you know that those two guys Finch and Udoka probably in some way back channel have interest in the job now it’s a leverage play what’s it going to cost to get them so we can talk to them because do you need to talk to them if you know that they want the job no what you need now to figure out is what’s it going to cost what Monica the whole situation Mike my Mike Tanabam the first thing he said to me having worked in the front offices and been the general manager in multiple spots in the NFL was you exactly what you said you don’t make this decision unless you have a list of five people that and you know you can get at least one of them that you would rather have than what you have right now so I agree with that part of it the the Knicks will get someone they believe gives them a better chance than Tom Thibido the way the reaction to all of this comes out is separate from that and will be long forgotten by the time next year begins so okay let’s leave that part of it there what who do they need what do what do they what’s the right person to coach it doesn’t have to be a name who Who What is it they need from a coach to take this team from the man who led the horse to water but couldn’t make a drink all right so let’s just look at the personality of this group let’s assume it stays as is maybe they get some bench support but it stays as is you’ve got an offensive juggernaut potentially like we were all here when folks talked about this has the opportunity to be one of the best starting fives in the league and so to me you now need someone that’s going to optimize innovate be creative and collaborate look at all those words as far as the offense is concerned so the offense to me is one of the primary things that this next head coach is going to have to lock into now his staff his other part is going to have to be how do you how do you organize a defense with this group but we saw this season the offense hit historic numbers it was clicking at a high level defense held its own right and so you’re trying to unlock an offense that you felt particularly in that Pacers series was exposed for being too stagnant i I’ll just say this there’s always a lot of other things than just the value of picks for a coach that can happen between owners and owners of other teams okay that’s number one now there’s a lot of what you mean by that well a lot of deals are done in a backdoor like way with other assets that other owners have combined with assets that they have in their teams respectively i’ll leave it at that okay okay another per we talk about Jason Kidd if you spend any time with LeBron James LeBron James raves about the innovation of Jason Kidd when he was on the bench with the Los Angeles Lakers you look at the title LeBron like Jason Kid has to the likes of Aiannis when they coached him in Milwaukee you think about how Jason Kid as a point guard position here a lot of people around New York say “Oh he’s a great player but he can unlock a lot of the value in this new age offense with a Carl Anthony Towns and a Jaylen Brunson and a Muel Bridges and a Ojan Nobi.” like he he’s been able to fit pieces like that and he got Kyrie Irving to play at a high level i will also add to this coach the the one of the buzzes in the conversations since the move from Tibs is this word accountability right and so like a relationship with a coach that demands a level of accountability through the locker room and commands a level of respect from this particular roster kid certainly fits that mold udoka certainly fits that mold in terms of guys that are going to get after it with you yeah no argument out of me but Shams is the one who’s saying last night if they request permission to speak to kid they’re going to get turned down okay i I mean so take that up with him then then you go to where Jay’s talking about talking business you answer your question what do the Knicks need they need experience that’s a big first and foremost this is a championship or bus season yes especially right now a job for you you guys face you’re making a face but that’s a great position to be in i mean you hope that the next four to five seasons are championship or bust it’s not one season so I I get how we’re going to try to categorize it like it’s all or nothing but it it’s really not all or nothing is it a job for a first year head coach i mean I would throw out a name like Rajan Rhonda i know you you mentioned him before i know i know and it doesn’t receive the same reaction from a lot of people but I’m telling you he is a savant in the game of basketball i just watched JJ Redic go to the Los Angeles Lakers first year head coach it’s about having the right staff in place as well i talk about accountability somebody that knows talk to anybody around the league about Rajan Rondo anybody around the league Savant genius on the court can unlock an offense i’ve seen it before i’m not questioning him i know it just doesn’t bring the same pop but you’re going to you’re going to bring in retreads you’re going to bring in Mike Brown you’re going to bring in all these other guys that have been coaches have been fired before the other guys so that’s a whole other question but let’s let’s go back to where we were at the very beginning whoever this coach is are they better off coaching a team that has Kevin Durant on it than a team that has Carl Anthony Towns on it to be clear here’s why I’m framing the question that way when we were talking yesterday about the possibility of the Knicks getting Durant Wendy sort of cut off the conversation and said “Let’s just make sure we know what we’re talking about.” The only way that happens is if Carl Towns is in the trade i’m quoting Wendy because of the money $54 million because of the money and we won’t bore people with the details all you need to know is because of the money that’s it are you closer to a title next year if you’re the Knicks leaving all other things generally being equal with Kevin Durant or with Carl Towns diamond Claus ke Kevin Durant diamond close if it’s a one for one because you can’t or whatever that would be you can’t gut the roster that’s the biggest concern is that you’re taking more away you’ve already taken two pieces away to get Towns if you’re now Towns I’ll give you one if you’re Madashibia and you want Muel Bridges and Carn Towns do you do it i would do it for Durant i would do it I would do it for Kevin Durant i would give up I would give up Muel Bridges and Carony Towns to Phoenix for Kevin Durant you still got to have a team like what happened you’re letting go of two players that’s two starters give me a headache two starters for one you would have been very proud of me by the way Monica yesterday guy stops me in the street and he says to me “So do you think the Knicks should get KD?” And I said “Well you know he’s a bucket.” A bucket i was so proud of myself cuz I stole that from you so anyway we’ll see what winds up happening there’s so much offse intrigue swirling around with the draft two weeks away oh by the way game three of the NBA Finals is tonight in Indianapolis let’s do more or less brought to you by ESPN Bed Sports Book jay points and assists for Harley more or less uh shout out to our lovely production team apparently I had more but when I saw this this morning it happened okay here’s my logic on more a bounceback game i agree with Jay and I actually think that both Seakum and Hallebertton have a big game and that is sort of the combination for them to get it done and finally Allen Pascal Seakum 19 and a half points more or less right tell me cuz I remember more it’s got to be more pascal Seakum by the way has two fast break points in the first two games he was leading the playoffs going into the finals with 63 fast break point this guy gets out of the break he leaks out a ton they have not let him do it he has got to be the answer in this game he’s got to step up and by the way he’s four for 13 off passes from Hallebertton why is Hallebertton’s numbers down because he’s not making shots
