got the news We’ve got the teams Uh we finally got a list a couple of wild card teams potentially but I got a feeling man this thing’s gonna snowball quickly and like I think this could be done Just from what I’m obviously not from what I’m hearing but what I’m seeing man week week and a half like it looks like it’s going to come quick man It does Let’s cover the thing we to that point we’ve been seeing for a while Seems like the trade’s happening during the draft or before the draft right Leading up to the draft which would tell us that they are most likely targeting some draft capital We’ll get into the asking price in the next segment In the final segment we’ll get into more of the list but I think the two biggest items that are new lately today are the Knicks apparently not expected to be involved So you mentioned the list like salute to everybody who keeps regurgitating this list as if it’s new This is the same list that Sham Shirania gave us like the day after the Sun season ended Houston San Antonio Miami Minnesota New York So great job by Shams That’s not super new We’ve gone over all those teams extensively for that reason because we knew that they would be in the mix But the Knicks very quickly their local reporters dispelled that That’s obviously big That takes one of the six teams we’re told he could go to off the table That means no Carl Anthony Towns in Phoenix if it’s true No Cat no male no OG Anonobi no Tyler Kolic who we were all salivating over during the draft season last year Get the Knicks off the the list It’s not happening What do you think Um I the my first question my first thought is why are the Knicks getting out of the of the Kevin Durant business because the Suns are asking for too much and or are they just they’re not looking in that direction I mean I gotta be honest with you The Knicks are the Knicks are the way that they’re conducting their off seasonason right now by just asking every team’s coach if they want to co go coach them is a little crazy And so them just kind of turning a blind eye to Kevin Durant is a little telling to maybe they saw the price tag and they said they’re out or hopefully it was just not a scheme fit But losing one of those teams man they don’t have a scheme right now so I doubt it’s that part I would say that you’re of the options you listed off I think it’s closer to they were just never interested I would say that you know OG Anobi is probably too important to them given his value on the defensive end to give up in a Kevin Durant trade not better than Kevin Durant but you’re getting toward the you know gutting your team side of things if you’re having to give up Anonobi is probably how they would see it Male I could see the Suns just not wanting to go down that rabbit hole and and face the embarrassment of retrading for the same guy back Plus male’s probably not enough for being honest by himself He’s had a rough couple of years and I don’t really know what he does for the Suns He’s in his prime He’s he’s well paid he’s up for a contract soon It’s not really getting the job done And then the cap part it’s like I don’t know if either team likes that You’re getting another hu highly paid dude who isn’t a fit with how you want your team to look in the future And from the Knicks standpoint with the Cat side of it as I said many times now they have three guys who are forwards Four if you include Josh Hart What What is their starting lineup going to be Jaylen Brid Jaylen Brunson and all those guys that that’s that’s not a team So it doesn’t exactly surprise me and I know this isn’t a Knicks conversation but I I think that to me it’s always been obvious they need depth They don’t need to get another big star acquisition They’ve done that two off seasonasons in a row and the trade deadline before that What they need is to get more players and KD doesn’t accomplish that So do do you think there’s a world where those guys had conversations behind closed doors and the Knicks were only interested in trading trading for Kevin Durant for Carl Anthony Towns and it was maybe and it’s the easiest financial move so it makes sense that that would come up And you said that you brought this up of I think both teams say no What if this is just a the Knicks are out now and they don’t they don’t want to gut their team for Kevin Durant because that’d be the only way that you would make a deal that helps the Suns outside of giving the Suns just three first round picks and Carl Anthony Towns and Tyler Cole look like I threw out a couple of days ago But I think maybe that was it man The Sun both teams saw the best chance it or the best swap and both teams said no I think it’s as simple as that potentially Agreed So the other big piece of news is from Sham Shirania in his write up kind of the opening of the sweep stakes so to speak is we knew that Rich Klyman his business manager would be involved here We had kind of been saying hey when is this going to actually this big meeting we’ve been hearing about is is it actually going to happen And it sounds like climate has seemingly been in Phoenix and and this has been underway this week now that the hire is is done and everything else But the part of it that I think was reported more concretely from Shams today that’s worth talking about Ben is he wrote that once he is traded Durant will be eligible to sign a two-year contract extension on July 6th worth as much as $122 million We knew that he didn’t sign it last year with the Suns and that’s partially what led us to this point He will probably want to do that with his next team and Shams is saying he absolutely will If he were to wait six months he could get a little more money whatever But the important factor of that nugget is that one obviously where he wants to sign that extension is going to impact where he goes We know that and we we’ve talked plenty about where where does he want to go Where where might where might he think he can win or what’s his priority We’ve kind of tried to be the mind readaders on that side of it But the other part of it is all these you know there was this idea like you mentioned of a wild card whatever and it’s in Shamza’s story too Well unless a wild card can make a hell of a pitch to KD I don’t think it’s going to happen because he’s not going to go It doesn’t make sense for any team to trade for him as a one-year rental If he’s not going to sign an extension the deal just falls apart there If he’s not even willing to extend there teams aren’t going to want to offer anything Then the teams he will extend for can make a bigger a better offer because they know he’s they’re going to keep him on and on down the line We know how these things go The same with Damen Leard same with Anthony Davis Donovan Mitchell whatever We we all we’ve seen this this movie before but I think that helps kind of clarify where this could be headed Feels like that list to me is basically set in stone Ben outside of maybe the Clippers who now both Gambo and Zack Low at the least maybe more people have kind of said “Hey don’t don’t forget about them.” And you and I have talked through hey maybe there’s a deal there But the Clippers are maybe the only wild card team I could really see getting involved Can I throw a caveat uh to you about the wild card teams that maybe you’re talking about Toronto the Clippers whoever it may be I I I don’t want to sound so naive but I think it’s worth exploring You and I are operating in this conversation as if we’re talking about Kevin Durant wanting to go to the best chance to win a championship What if that’s not Kevin Durant’s prerogative What if it’s I don’t know if I’m thinking of it that specifically the best place to win a championship because in that case like I’ve said before I wouldn’t put the Spurs on that list Yeah I mean I would but we just disagree on that one I I’m just thinking the Spurs are not the best place in the whole NBA that Kevin Durant could go to win a championship Well no no no Yeah that’s So some of these other teams were just in deep playoff runs They’re the they’re the exception So but yeah I mean maybe that’s not his priority but I think this list kind of runs the gamut right of comfort familiarity with now friendships There’s a whole bunch of things about this list You know what one of the reasons why and I know you don’t want to miss I was thinking about this today One of the reasons why I don’t like missing media events pressers like I could watch the presser at home There’s more to it than just watching it It’s being there Not you know not only because it looks good but also you can talk with other media members and just get a sense of what we’re all thinking Someone and I don’t want to say anyone’s name because I don’t want to put anyone on blast but you and me and a couple of other people were talking and someone said “Of course Kevin Durant wants to go to San Antonio It’s the only place that of those teams on that list who have no one covering that team who is a small market maybe Kevin Durant’s number one priority and I think this is a real thing is that he’s going to go somewhere that’s quiet that the limelight isn’t huge This isn’t LA It’s not New York It’s not Chicago What if he’s going somewhere that he feels like he can do what he’s always wanted to do just hoop and that he’s not worried about reporters coming at him maybe the national guys but in San Antonio I feel like you got to play kind of nice But I think a presser for the new head coach in San Antonio is half the size it is in Phoenix And I think maybe a championship is one of his priorities but maybe it’s also somewhere that he can kind of just hide and play basketball and just be the man And I think that’s something that Kevin Durant would be very interested in Yeah I don’t super think it’s crazy I mean you think it’s crazy He choke Yeah I I think saying Kevin Durant wants to hide when he’s probably one of the most visible and public superstar players and won a freaking award from the media this year for how agreeable he can be to talk about things I think hide is a pretty strong word to use about a guy like that I think that he also has chosen to play in San Francisco and New York City in his past two opportunities and but his next one was Phoenix Yeah Well I mean we know Phoenix is a weird kind of fickle market but it’s the fifth biggest city in the country and it’s a hop skip and a jump from Los Angeles We know there’s tons of national media here on a regular basis and many of which gave KD the business and made him probably get the respect that made them vote for him for the freaking Magic Johnson thing You know Ramona Shel went at it with him Tim McMahon went at it with him whatever So I don’t think that’s going to be a huge priority Although the Spurs thing does it it confuses me and interests me and I I just my last point on this would be to say that I’m surprised we haven’t I’m surprised I guess that Shams’s comments today in this article all over TV that he made them and everything Twitter that they didn’t include KD would like to go here I like that domino we’ve been waiting on that domino to fall for months now I’m surprised we haven’t yet heard that unless this list of teams is basically that and we’re just not calling it that yet I don’t know Well I I don’t I don’t want to stretch us too much longer on this but what I will say is is Hyde is hide is hide is a strong word I don’t mean cuz he’s scared and hides I think he’s just kind of a res more reserved guy in terms of he just wants to go hoop He doesn’t want to deal with all the nonsense I don’t mean that in like a derogatory uh term to Katie but the but the other thing about that too is like the other teams on this list are Houston who have a pretty up and down fan base and no media coverage and the Minnesota Timberwol like it’s not as if the Spurs are the only place where there there’s a little bit less media coverage I know that they’re on the extreme end but I I don’t think Yeah I just think between these teams I don’t think there’s a especially if the Wednesday where he said “From what I am told the Suns are looking for a comparable package of for what they traded Kevin Durant which is impact players and multiple draft assets.” Obviously if we go back to 2023 Ben we know that was Mikuel Bridges that was Cam Johnson that was four first in a swap I believe and Jay Crowder which then the Nets flipped him for five seconds So that was quite the hall and you know I don’t think any of us I don’t think there’s any reasonable case that you could make that the Suns are going to get that back KD is two years plus older than that now He has one year left on his contract pending an extension like we just talked about I don’t think that’s going to be what happens but it’s an interesting thing to think about as we start to gauge what this trade is actually going to look like That that’s where the Suns are kind of setting the bar in their conversations with other teams Yeah man Um there’s two sides to this conversation the talking about the Kevin Durant trade like what the Suns could get back that discourse on social media or on ESPN all of it is like it’s it’s everywhere There’s one side of the aisle where I’ve seen some Suns fans and some fairly big accounts be like the conversations with the San Antonio Spurs start with the number two pick and either Castle or Fox or something like that Like can we be for real Can we swallow our pride and understand that that’s not what the Suns are going to get Maybe they get Castle You and I are highly like skeptical of that But the other two things are definitely not happening And then it also goes into the well all these fan all these fan bases that are in our comment section that are saying oh you’re not going to get Kevin Durant for that But they also want Kevin Durant Like there’s a fine line here The Suns are not getting back four first round picks and Male Bridges and Cam Johnson Jay Crowder in a 2028 uh pick swap But they are going to get something And I got to be honest with you man I know you might be a little bit more skeptical than me The more I read the more that reports come out I think the Suns are going to get more than I think you and I are both expecting And I think that is at least one first round pick but I’m pretty confident they might get two Like I wouldn’t be surprised at this point if they get the 14th overall pick a first round pick two years from now or something like that someone a pick that they traded from someone else and then the the the package that we talked about for Sohan uh Velc and Barnes right Those like I think that that’s that’s comparable but I think where it goes to the Suns is they just got to be willing to start there and potentially come down Do you agree Yeah So I’ve said for a while and I think it’s worth reiterating because I I do think this is where it’s going to probably land It’s going to be somewhere between what the Heat got back for Jimmy Butler and what the Blazers got back for Damen Lillard Let’s review what that was The Heat got back Andrew Wiggins Kyle Anderson Da’Von Mitchell and a 2025 first round pick which is number 20 this year It’s from the Warriors obviously So that ended up being Wiggins who’s you know a little more than just salary but effectively kind of just salary Da’Von Mitchell who was kind of a flyer but he ended up being kind of he hit with Miami and then a middle of the first round pick Not great right Uh that would be like what all the lo those opposing fan bases are telling us the Suns are going to get Portland though for Lillard got let’s just set aside what Kamara became Let’s just call him like a flyer which is what he was at that time They got Aton a Flyer and Kamara Drew Holiday a 2029 first and swaps in 2028 and 2030 The Suns are not getting that for back for KD That’s more than they’re going to get But again that’s I think the spectrum Those are the two poles of where it’s going to land between And so yeah I think what you’re saying is is is possible I think it’s good that you know what could have happened for instance today after Shamza’s initial report another world we we hear very quickly not only are the Knicks not interested but hey maybe Minnesota they just don’t think it’s going to work with all of their other business outstanding with Randall and Reed and Nquille all all up for contracts and everything else and uh by the way too the Spurs just don’t think it’s worth it to accelerate their timeline and oh by the way also Katie just wants to go to Miami Well then we’re talking about much closer to the Jimmy Butler thing So yeah I tend to agree it’s it’s going to be a decent package I think it’s going to be one veteran to make up the money one interesting young player and at least one first round pick That’s kind of where I’ve been all off season and I I still believe the Suns will get that Um I think my follow-up question to that would be which do you think they’re closer to think they’re closer to the I want to put you on a little bit of a you’re not on a fence but you’re you’re you’re in the middle somewhere So show who are you closer to the package the butler the are you more closer to the Lillard trade or closer to the butler trade Uh to be honest probably closer to the butler trade Okay Because what I just laid out is closer to the butler trade you know No it is It is I just I just want you I just want you to say it is all So I Well and so but the other the other thing I want to bring up real quick that Wendy did report today too on along those lines is he said if you’re offering the Suns a package that leads them toward a rebuild Yeah you got to get off the phone But at the same time he also is saying as is Gambo that this is probably going to happen by the draft and that the reason for that is because it’s expected to include picks in this year’s draft So I kind of don’t know what to make of that It’s not hey they’re just gonna go get a bunch of veteran players back but it’s also not they’re gonna go try to get five first round picks and that’s it So that that part of it is the part I maybe I don’t know what to make of it right now Can I be honest with you man I don’t I saw that report and I was like why would you leak that Like if you’re if you’re the Suns why would you leak that I’m assuming that came from the Suns camp because now you’re tying your hands because you’re telling the Suns community like we’re not tanking Be ready for next year and now you might have to take a like you might take Vel Barnes and I don’t know I’m I’m just throwing something out there Three first round picks and then you’re like okay we’re going more to the to the we’re doing what we said we wouldn’t do was we’re starting a little bit more of a rebuild than we are of a retool I don’t know how that report helps them unless pretty sure that they’re not going to take a deal like that I mean I what you just laid out I think they’re saying we’re not interested Any chance any chance any at all that this that Kevin Durant is still a Phoenix Sun come the open come opening night Because the Suns didn’t find the right deal No I don’t think so 0% Like you are zero I mean what I when I when I like part of part of Here’s why Here’s why I don’t think Kevin Durant is going to suit up on opening night without an extension And the Suns would be morons to give it to him They would be they would be dumb to give it to him It would also be a little funny It just it’s the same thing Jimmy was going through all summer Yeah Well when we talk about Well when we talk about these things man it’s just the different avenues we could go down And I just think to myself when I see that report I’m like what if you don’t get that Are you prepared to run it out with Kevin Durant in October and give him an extension Because if you’re not you probably shouldn’t leak that But that’s me coming from I think the Suns leaked that not someone else So that that’s kind of where I go with it Yeah I I I think that that’s probably just based on the conversations that are trickling out you know if if the Suns are maybe for instance talking to the Spurs and then people around that situation are then getting in touch with reporters then it’s just the facts of the negotiations you know because I think we’re really in the thick of it now Like I think that the reporting is now based on conversations that are actually happening not hypotheticals And that’s kind of why it’s flying out all so so rapidly right now Let’s get into the details of this this group of teams and maybe the Clippers or the Raptors What is the state now that we are getting a little closer to what the package could look like It’s getting narrowed down We know Katie wants the extension What team is going to just spelled out in that last segment Interesting young player veteran to make the money work and at least one first Houston can obviously do that Miami can do that in a few different ways The Spurs obviously can do that The one that I think is interesting and I think actually takes us to one of the wild card teams in the Clippers I kind of put the Clippers and the the Wolves in a similar category where they’re lighter on picks They’re frankly lighter on available interesting young talent but they have a good assembly of guys that are kind of in their prime and still younger that maybe are the answer to what we were kind of wondering about with the don’t approach the Suns with a rebuild offer type of design because Minnesota we know I mean Randall probably has to be in that deal I don’t know if he comes back to Phoenix but that gets a little weird Dancenzo might be in that Mike Connley might be in that I mean maybe Nas Reed Jaden McDaniels maybe You know all those guys are established dudes on their second contracts already And then the Clippers to me I think it comes down to Ivita Zubatz who was like a fringe all NBA There’s no way man If like I agree with you And and I when I say no way you know I’m saying that I know how good you think Zubot is I don’t think that you’re some guy that’s not paying attention I know you know how good he is Um part of that has to do with the Clippers just say no because of that Yeah Yeah And part of that has to do with our guy Shane Young shoving it down my uh my throat every single day when it comes to Zubot So I uh uh well well aware about how great Zubot is When you and I broke broke down who is the most realistic best player the Suns can get in a trade a couple of weeks ago Zubot never came up because you and I both think like that’s crazy But maybe it’s not man Maybe it’s not like that is a he was a third teamer this year if I’m not mistaken when it comes to he didn’t make it but he got votes Yeah Okay He I mean he’s he’s 28 He’s on a deal that is an absolute steal He makes$18 million next season 20 the year after that 21 the year after that I mean that’s like less than half of a max Like he he he’s one of the best value players He’s basically only ever played for the Clippers He got traded there in his second season if I’m remembering correctly I mean I just the Clippers would be crushed for doing that in my opinion But and and they’ve even though they’re known for spending they’re not stupid They let Paul George go They they tend to always find you know interesting young guys to to replenish their depth Tyoo is a great coach Like they’re not this type of team that is that makes a run at at something outlandish just for the sake of doing it So I I I would agree with you That’s why when we talked about the Clippers I thought Harden would have to be the guy And you and I kind of agreed why why would the Suns bring in an late30s kind of combo guard to play next to Booker That that’s just not that doesn’t make a lot of sense But I guess I just brought them up because I think that they’re they are lumped in with Minnesota where both of those teams the package would be more playerbased Um so what if what if it wasn’t for the Timberwolves What if Ant I I don’t think this is crazy I think this is an actual possibility What if Ant is internally pressuring like putting the hammer down on the Minnesota Timberwolves front office to go trade for Kevin Durant What if because they don’t have the assets they decide all right Ants Anne is going after us for this He’s about to be traded to the San Antonio Spurs Here’s our Godfather offer And I know this is crazy but we just talked about Zubot Like if these are the true wild cards these are wild card offers McDaniels Rob Dillingham maybe a pick super far down the line and Julius Randle just whatever to make the money work is really the only thing I’m I’m that’s too much money but yeah is it too Randle and McDaniels would be too much what you just laid out is probably like 60 plus million yeah fine I know we’re not we’re not getting caught in the weeds but that I I point that out because the Timberwolves it’s a complete nightmare to make a trade work with that team so Ant can say what he wants up against it very similar to the Suns being up against it and three of their key players are free agents Ant can’t change the reality of their their books So I mean it could play a role though It could play a role probably would agree with you that the combination of their desperation to win and they have been pretty aggressive combined with K that seems like probably of any team even though we’ve heard a lot of noise around San Antonio I still would say Minnesota jumps out to me as the team that’s probably most likely to be in that type of you know Shams tweet of Kevin Durant has notified the Phoenix Suns he would like to go to Minnesota It just feels like that’s the place where they’re closest to a championship They is if the Knicks aren’t involved they have that res relationship where we know that they hung out a lot at the Olympics and they’ve discussed their mutual respect for each other and everything else And we know Minnesota has been go They have new ownership all that like that That one feels like the the the breadcrumbs are there but I just keep running up against well there can be all the breadcrumbs in the world It’s so hard to get a deal done Um we we had talked about this and I wasn’t going to bring this up but you said something So do you think Kevin Durant will do that And before I ask you to answer that question Devin Booker and Kevin Durant are obviously really really close dudes Do you think Kevin Durant would give Devin Booker and the Phoenix Suns the middle finger and say “Trade me to that team Figure it out I don’t give a damn what you get back.” Do you think Defcon 1 happens in Phoenix Because I don’t think he’d turn on on Deon Booker like that Um well the case for saying the case for saying that they would that he would be pro you know set his destination is that the Suns basically shafted him in February like we cannot forget that they were minutes from trading him to a multitude of teams behind his back That happened and we can’t forget that But I do think that there’s a version of of setting your destination that isn’t so public that still allows the Suns to potentially negotiate where maybe even the team receiving KD doesn’t have a full picture that he’s so dead set on going there and the other teams involved don’t And maybe if the Suns and Kimman and Durant know hey I it’s pretty much Miami for instance for me But then the Suns can still go to Miami and say “Hey we have this offer from Minnesota You got to beat that.” And then Miami goes up and then they go to the Spurs and say “Hey if you want him last chance Miami is offering this.” And then they always know they’re that he’s just going to go to the Heat but they can still drum up a market Maybe that’s something that could happen but we wouldn’t hear about it So it’s hard to know if we’re right or wrong Exactly So I guess I should have framed that question with I totally agree with you
