it’s a Thursday episode of Lockdown Grizzlies the dynamic duo rides once more deich and I talking about Brandon Clark and what his status is on the team moving forward heading into a busy offseason kevin Durant latest rumors don’t have him coming to Memphis but maybe the Grizzlies can get in on that action in other ways and then some assistant coach named dropping if you know anyone that’s good at name dropping it’s somebody is plugged into the Memphis Grizzlies as to Michael Cole we’re going to talk about that and more on this episode of Locked On Grizzlies let’s lock in you are Locked On hanging out with us each and every time that a show goes live whether you catch it live early in the morning or you’re checking it out whenever you’re able to throughout your day it’s all good and Michael and I appreciate you michael I talked a little about a little bit excuse me about Brandon Clark when the Zack Edy news first broke but in our planning for this episode we wanted to circle back to it because just how much of a fulcrum point he is a pressure point in terms of how Memphis kind of sees the roster sees Clark’s role moving forward because there’s a giant hole literally and figuratively at the center position for the Memphis Grizzlies with Zach Edi out at least through the start of the season the official medical update I know you provided yesterday or talked about yesterday four months re-evaluation do the math that’s right at the start of training camp almost certainly will not be ready for opening night how that impacts Brandon Clark’s role on the team whether he starts next to Jiren Jackson Jr whether he’s a key reserve off the bench which has been the best use of him over the span of his career or whether he hopefully as he gets healthier as the offseason goes on a team uses him as facilitation for a trade how do you see Clark kind of fitting into this puzzle now that Edy is almost certainly at least going to miss the start of the season you know what it is one of the I mean you said puzzle it’s one of the most puzzling things uh to figure out here in a lot of different ways uh we can start with the fact that he is uh one of the team’s best uh defensive bigs you know you talk about defensively you know Jiren Jackson Jr and Brandon Clark when they play together uh those net rating numbers have have pretty much been high because they’re switchable bigs they play well off of each other and then the offense is is a bonus but his ability as a rim runner um he he he has that floater that he likes to rely on like he gives you uh those things uh and he’s definitely kind of someone who has played a consistent and reliable role you know I I look at Brandon Clark I see someone who’s who’s not going to say “Hey I deserve to be you know a starter on this team and I deserve this many touches or that many touches despite uh the instant impact numbers that he puts up in the minutes that he gets you know the course of his career.” Uh so so that’s kind of how I view him as that that spark plug guy off the bench but so we just touched on with the Zachi injury um it kind of puts this conversation into a new light because uh to me Joe it’s about are we are we talking about the idea of starting Brandon Clark which the Grizzlies did at times last season or is it more about the fact that oh um we need to get another big to step in to start and Brandon Clark continues to play that same role and we saw Brandon Clark get an extension so what does that say about him uh and his future with this team as you know other guys are going to start getting extensions as well potentially Santi Alama like there’s a lot of moving parts here but I want to start with this show it because I got to get into the structure and the schematics of this thing uh Brandon Clark was hurt believe it was against the Portland Trailblazers uh Portland Trailblazers if memory serves me correctly that was one of Taylor Jenkins last games I remember that very vividly it was on that road trip uh BC got hurt and uh after that Iselo takes over clark never played a game under uh Tuance Iselo when they kind of drastically shifted things in his office i say that to say uh if you look at the numbers and maybe some people will you know attribute it to the injury that Brandon Clark had he was one of the guys who statistically at least from a scoring standpoint went down some this year uh but we saw over the course of the last few years uh his ability as a rim runner you know set a screen get to his spots uh he really thrived and scored in a lot of those situations but when he played with the Grizzlies this season there weren’t as many of those opportunities so is he someone who you talk about more screens on ball screens and things like that more rim running opportunities does Brandon Clark get back to that instant scoring ability that he showed before this previous season when he averaged double figures in every other season uh before this one or is this just kind of you know a case of who he is now after you know Achilles injury uh I think that is the primary thing for me uh Joe if I’m confident that Brandon Clark can succeed under Tomaso uh he becomes a big part of this team but the Grizzlies need to figure that out because if they are not confident in that then that opens up a whole another question joe I mean we got to shout out Modern Medicine right shout out Modern Medicine brandon Clark looked pretty darn good before the PCL injury but he did appear maybe not to lose a step but he certainly seemed to be not even necessarily favoring the right way to phrase it would be he looked different right like he was more aware of his body maybe he’s more aware of how he was using his his explosiveness maybe Yeah maybe more selective in how he operated i think that we talk a lot about gravity right and I hate that term because I just think it’s ridiculous in a basketball setting but it’s becoming more and more popular shout out to our mutual friend Parker Fleming he uses it all the time and to me gravity if you’re going to apply that logic to shooting also applies to rim running and that is one of the most interesting things about Brandon Clark what he lacks in size again he’s good eight inches shorter than Edy what he lacks there he makes up for in that athleticism that ability to get to the rim he has a decent little float game uh shooting the floater at about 10 feet there he is somebody that it would look very different of course but he still could be an offensive weapon that enables Jaw to have room to operate even though the screens may not be the same because it’s be simply being set by a smaller guy and I talked about on my last show how versatile Clark is defensively and if you’re able to trot out a a court a front court excuse me that is Jaylen Wells Brandon Clark Jiren Jackson Jr there’s lots of possibilities there for all the weaknesses rebounding potentially and for all of the flaws in terms of not having as much rim protection in terms of size a major benefit would be having the switchability and all sorts of other things that you could do from your small forward through center position there’s a lot of tantalizing potential there but to your point will Tumas Iselo be willing to make the adjustments necessary to go from a Zack Edy big and what he brings to the table compared to Clark yeah and and that’s why we got to learn a little bit more about Eelo and some of his things he’ll prepare like we know that he likes to play with pace that was a Taylor Jenkins thing as well brandon Clark uh can play you know with pace as a big he gets up and down the floor he runs the floor really well for a big things like that um there were a couple times toward the end of the season where I don’t want to put words in his mouth but when we would ask him questions about rebounding his answers would be a little bit different uh from Taylor Jenkins to the point where I was kind of led to believe that uh rebounding was just more of a focal point for Taylor Jenkins uh Danit is for Iselos where while he definitely you know you need to rebound the basketball you know Taylor Jenkins it was at the top of the game plan a lot of times and I didn’t get that sense sense with Isel i could be wrong but that’s just not the sense that I got in that short period of time and if you look at the numbers with Brandon Clark it it’s funny because him and Santi Alama kind of flipped whereas you know we’ve talked about it in the past santi had a great year you know uh as a you know as a rebounder in one area and Brandon Clark had a great year as a rebounder in another area in Brandon Clark’s case he was a great offensive rebounder in Sante’s case he was a a great defensive rebounder so uh that was kind of the difference there but um but look I I think when you talk about like a small sample size here cuz roughly I mean this this is it’s still very early in the process with Zach Edi but uh I think right now at this point in time we’re probably talking maybe 15 games uh you know miss and again like I said the guy hasn’t even you know uh started really rehabing yet so um we’re talking roughly 15 games so to speak and if that’s the case uh you can go with a Brandon Clark over trying to go find some big prize of free agent or acquisition out there to fill in but what if it’s longer to Michael what if it’s not going to be quite as easy as that that’s what we’re going to talk about next here on Lockdown Grizzies but let us know in the comments hit us up on X how are you feeling about Brandon Clark’s status going into this season do you see him as a key cog to the machine or do you see him as trade fodder and potass potential trade involving one Kevin Durant that’s going to be our focus coming up next here on Lockdown Grizzly stick around today’s episode of Lockdown Grizzlies is brought to you by Game Time there’s nothing like the NBA playoffs i loved Kevin Durant’s business partner Rich Kimman are sorting through trade options with interested teams mainly featuring the Houston Rockets San Antonio Spurs Minnesota Timberwolves which is fascinating to me Miami Dol or Miami Dolphins goodness gracious this really is my first episode back miami Heat and the New York it just says New York obviously Memphis is not mentioned and the interesting thing about that to me is all of the mentions of Memphis during the Jimmy Butler stuff were very forced right we talked a lot about that when the Jimmy Butler rumors were moving around right i don’t know that Memphis not being mentioned for KD right now is an eliminator of Memphis because the Grizzlies historically have played things pretty close to the vest almost always when there’s a leak involving Memphis it’s coming from an agent or something like that and again I don’t have inside sources that’s just my interpretation of how the leaks go um you would know much more about that than me but assuming that Durant is not coming to Memphis because that’s the most likely outcome right kd not being in the mix you have talked about in the past partner the idea of the Grizzlies being able to help facilitate trades as a third team so say the Suns want to get their draft capital back from the Houston Rockets which is the most likely thing here I would say uh that makes the most sense for Phoenix if that’s their goal Memphis could step in and help facilitate a deal in one way or another how do they go about doing that which one would make the most sense to me the ones that are the blinking lights is the mention of New York right whether it’s Brooklyn I mean Brooklyn’s unlikely history there pretty sure it’s the Knicks like a Mitchell team yeah if you go down the route of thinking that Ed’s going to be out longer or you want to strengthen the center position in that more traditional screen setting rim running big way Robinson perhaps could be had from the New York Knicks and maybe you facilitate a deal where you bring that guy in do you see Memphis with a path whether it’s addressing the big man position i know we’ll talk more on tomorrow’s show about the need for a wing versus a big yeah do you think that the Grizzlies could check the Ed replacement for a short amount of time uh box is this a way that they could get involved elsewhere do you think the Grizzlies are going to be poking around not for Kevin Durant potentially we know they’ve been interested in the past but to help facilitate a deal to check some of these boxes that they have on their roster yeah just having an ear ear to the ground right being that that little throwin team that says “Hey hey I I’ll get in there and and make the deal work.” and next thing you know you end up with some nice assets or whatever the case may be um I think it is a kind of a creative way like when you talk about roster building in the NBA uh that is the route that some teams have to go when you talk about trades free agency uh that is the way that they can build build their rosters uh and through the draft or whatever the case may be free agency is a more you know a liable route for the bigger market teams uh for whatever reason that’s still the case today at some point it won’t be that way uh but right now uh for whatever reason really I mean look it’s you you get the like I think Shaq uh said it recently and and look I’m I’m agreeing with Shaq so that tells you something but like uh he he said that um basically like the markets don’t matter anymore like it’s the social media era um wherever you play you’re going to get seen like it’s it’s not that big of a deal anymore it’s not like the old days when you’re going to play in LA and you just you so happen like sure certain cities have you know bigger media outlets or whatever the case may be but uh you’re going to get seen everywhere like we got streaming services now like if you score 60 points it’s going to be number one on Sports Center no matter if you’re playing in Charlotte or New York it doesn’t matter better cities have better night lives and better cities have better things that correspond to multi-millionaire 25y olds and that’s why you James aren’t it you you just you just you get your own little private jet and you fly to Vegas on your off day and have some fun but but um but yeah I I think the Grizzlies should definitely uh get involved in some type of way now at at the end of the day everything to them is going to come down to the map and that’s like like when you mention know the idea of Mitchell Robinson And like um I mean for one uh I mean if if what I feel is is correct which is like the Carl Anthony Towns thing has been like a imperfect fit especially with you know uh you know Tibido and like his um you know kind of you know I guess love uh for for defense and things like that and and Carl Towns wasn’t a wasn’t a great fit in his system maybe they let Tiblo go because those two could mix or maybe it’s still like uh Carl and Towns is going to be probably that big piece that’s moved if you’re trying to acquire a Katie which will probably mean they need Mitchell Robinson in that case but that’s not the case uh Mitchell Robinson and Carlin Towns it does make sense for one of those guys uh to potentially be on the move and for Memphis to be involved in in that uh you’re basically saying “Hey we’re choosing to address this over the wing which they’ll say we’re going to talk more about on tomorrow.” So I want to save that but I do think there are many ways for the Grizzlies kind of just to teeter their way into one of these uh to some of these talks like you look at teams you know like the Rockets who like last season had a lot of bigs you know they had you know Alen Steven Adams Jock Landell things like that a lot of guys that the Grizzlies would be okay with filling in uh just for a couple games so uh I I think that is kind of a way to kind of maneuver your way in there the Grizzlies got all we talk about it a lot they have access to all of their draft capital going forward after you get past this first round pick that they gave away to the Washington Wizards the Grizzlies control all of their assets which basically to me screams we can be in any conversation we want yeah I’m pretty fascinated by the idea of KD and Booker together there in Phoenix because obviously there’s a connection right and those two guys playing together would be really interesting to see i in the NBA I I I lean towards if Ed’s injury is only going to make him miss 15 games i’ve seen enough of Brandon Clark shout out modern medicine i want to give him that opportunity you bring in a veteran minimum guy that can kind of eat some of those minutes as a true big or we haven’t talked as much about how to use two-way contracts going into next season maybe you have a two-way contract ated big who you evaluate film as a young player or somebody that’s in the G-League who has the most screen assists right in the GLeague last year like you find that guy and you put them in a position to be that player for you for the time that Edy is out playing 12 minutes or so a game getting what you need out of that spot i don’t know that I would address it through or or I would use that type of avenue to address this situation assuming Edy is back in that 15ame window now if the update in October and that’s one of the problems here that’ll probably be the next time we hear about it uh if the update in October is oh he’s actually gonna miss another four months on top of that well then maybe they should have been a little bit more aggressive in terms of a replacement for this coming season because they have to win this coming season the window is closing on this group and I think they’re aware of that at least they’re saying the right things publicly so if KD’s not in the cards being in the mix to try to check some of these boxes is important let Michael and I know in the comments hit us up on X how are you feeling about this KD stuff where do you think he would make the most sense obviously he’d be fun in Memphis but if Demich’s right which he often is and something like a Carl Anthony Towns for KD would be a baseline that means the minimum for Memphis is Bane and Bane is not Carl Anthony Towns so there would be need need to be more than Bane and I don’t know if Memphis would be wise to pay that price but let us know in the comments how you’re feeling hit us up on action when we come back a little bit of assistant coach name dropping stick around here on Lockdown Grizzlies today’s episode of Lockdown Grizzlies is brought to you by Wayfair there’s nothing like stepping out into your own outdoor space and feeling like you’ve escaped to a a huge outdoor selection that’s wfir.com wayfair every style every home to Michael we have a couple of possible assistant coaches coming to the Memphis Grizzlies working under this Elo era i’m going to talk first about my boy Jared Dudley because Jared Dudley was one of my favorite NBA players when I was younger i loved his game because it kind of looked like a guy playing at the Y i knew that’s where you were going i just have to I just have to hear it i knew that’s what you that’s he he would hang out in the corner he’d knock down some threes he was a better thanex expected defender he had the headband on i just thought his game was very malleable and I would imagine as a coach he could attribute that same kind of connection you know the the best coaches aren’t always the guys that were the best players right oftent times the best coach is somebody that can communicate uh an experience communicate a scheme teach it effectively and I Dudley gives off he has a lot of coaching experience at this point in the NBA he gives off a lot of interesting vibes to me in terms of how he could be that veteran presence that a coach like Iselo certainly would need in a locker room you want somebody that has been through the NBA rigor and schedule and knows what these guys are going through while at the same time can be whatever you need them to be in terms of shooting defense he just kind of seems like a jack of all trades kind of name so I really liked that I saw Jared Dudley’s in that mix yeah uh yeah it was first reported by Mark Stein uh the idea that Jared Dudley uh interview Yeah yeah with the Grizzlies and uh yeah kind of piggybacking off of that uh with with Jared Dudley it it isn’t it wasn’t just you know what he did you know uh in his career and what he’s done uh since he retired to me it’s a combination of both that kind of make him uh you know the just the ideal type of assistant coach that would be a good fit here um so many things come to mind when I’ve talked to people about Jared Dudley in recent days uh one thing I was talking to someone out in Phoenix uh and they were just telling me how um you know how how key of a role he played in the early years of Devin Booker’s uh development just from a communication standpoint just from a you know teaching him professionalism while playing on a team that quite frankly didn’t look professional if you remember Devin Booker’s first years with the Suns it was different coach after different coach after different coach uh bad team after bad team uh roster overhauls and a bunch of young guys but Jared Dudley was kind of one of the fixtures around there that really kind of taught uh Devin Booker you know uh the ropes or however you want to describe it so I heard a lot of good things on that end with him and we can kind of correlate some of that to Memphis even though this is an older group and a more mature group uh but having that uh guy who’s been there in the league uh who’s played you know with LeBron James who’s played with Steve Nash you know the Amari Starttomires of the world uh and Anthony Davis and so many more uh he’s credible he’s always been known like you just talked about the fact that he he played so long in the NBA without being the most talented guy and part of that was because of the fact that he was a great communicator uh defensively he he was very active he talked a lot and pretty much his last couple years in the league was essentially player coach like the Yiannis Hasslam role in a way you know with the Suns with the Lakers uh you know he just essentially ended up being a guy who was on the bench clapping saying “Hey let’s do this let’s do that come and he’s cheer you know LeBron James and and those guys on during playoff runs and whatnot so uh he makes a lot of sense i’ve been following his coaching career you know over there with the Mavs as well and you know the Mavs have had a lot of transition go on in the last year or so so it makes sense that you know some assistants over there may be you know poking around seeing what’s out there whatever the case may be but uh I I do like the fact that his name is mentioned and uh the other one that I like Joe is uh Adrien Griffin that’s the other one that Mark Stein pointed out uh I like that what What do you think about him Joe what do you think about he would be phenomenal i I think that’s one of those guys that really got a bad rep uh back a couple years ago when he was with the Bucks and everybody says “Oh how terrible he was what an awful coach.” The Bucks were 30 and 13 they were Okay now granted they have Giannis and all that sort of stuff when you have one of the best players on the planet that certainly helps but I think that in order to have a winning record in the National Basketball Association that means you manage something right right maybe his X’s and O’s were off maybe the scheme wasn’t as clean as it should have been i can sign off on all of those things i watched some of those Bucks games i I could see where that concern would be but something was going well it’s not like he was sabotaging and blowing it all to hell and I think that that experience that he had with Giannis that experience that he had in the NBA again you want someone that has that pedigree you know someone that has that on their resume to reinforce what Iselo is saying so they’re not just saying “Oh this is some European league coach he doesn’t know what he’s talking about this isn’t going to work here.” And then Dudley or Griffin or both hopefully can pull them aside and say “No this will work here and here’s why.” And they can give a different angle and a different perspective and Griffin obviously brings the head coaching even though it ended pretty unceremoniously that experience is still valuable there’s only 30 of those jobs available in the entire world and Griffin held one of them that would be good experience for this guy yeah it would be be great experience and um you know kind of going off of the Adrien Griffin because as you said he he’s been kind of known as a as a good assistant in the NBA uh for a while now and that’s kind of what led to him getting that job with the Bucks he was very respected and you know of course things didn’t work out between him and some of the Bucks best players or whatever the case may be uh but what I get from this like if you want to just peel the picture back a little bit further in the big picture here is this is exactly why I said earlier in the offseason this is exactly what we talked about the idea that yes Elo has his experience in Europe uh he had some experience last season but you got to approach this and say we need to put experienced guys around him uh not completely surrounded with you know you don’t you don’t have to JJ Reicquet so to speak uh but but give him a couple guys who have a lot of familiarity in the NBA uh as well as you know uh some guys who he has familiarity with you know some of those European ties that we’ve talked about in previous episodes as well and you combine them together and I think that’s how you maximize his staff that’s how you maximize this opportunity uh hearing the names Jared Dudley and Adrien Griffin uh should be good news to Grizzlies fans knowing that this team is serious because I would think that neither of those uh would be relatively cheap assistant coaches so to speak because you’re talking about poaching Jared Dudley you know from Dallas and Adrien Griffin is a guy who was NBA head coach uh recently like you said you know 30 and 13 like he he wasn’t terrible in at least in the win loss column you know you could talk about all the other stuff but they they won games so uh I I like the idea of those two names and I’m sure there are going to be even more names that emerge uh that really show to me that there is a serious level uh to to what we’ve been talking about Joe like I know some people saw the East a little higher and said “Okay yep they’re not serious they’re not serious.” They didn’t even do a search but the Grizzlies probably said “Wait just give us some time wait till you see what we do with some of these assistants because if if you’re going out there and you’re saying “Let’s talk to Adrien Griffin let’s talk to Jared Dudley.” These prominent names these names that these players are going to recognize and have respect for uh I think you’re moving in the right direction that matters a lot and we’ve talked a lot about that too stop don’t talk to me show me right what kind of actions are you going to execute and these interviews are a good step forward so let the Michael and I know in the comments hit us up on XJ Mullenax at the Michael C do you like these names who else would you like to see the Memphis Grizzlies try to reach out to to build out to Amos Iselo’s staff thank you so much for being with us on this Thursday edition of Lockdown Grizzlies friday is coming up you got to get down on Friday everybody knows that here if you’re an everydayer to Michael we’ve hinted at it a couple of times what does Memphis need most a wing a big what is priority number one that’ll be our main focus on our Friday episode yeah yeah we got to get down on Joe did we Did we get down on last Friday like it’s um I’m down yeah yeah you I think that’s Friday yeah but I’m I’m excited maybe we both can get back in the groove but uh but yeah a lot of good things to talk about look um this the idea of this wings and big conversation it’s really fascinating to me because because it’s funny how we have this idea of how the offseason is going to go and then every year Jo it never fails it’s Zach Ed this year last year Vince Williams Gigi Jackson in the past we’ve seen it with Dylan Brooks Jiren Jackson Jr John Morett’s 25game suspension like things don’t go quiet around here so it is what it is to paraphrase the great Mike Tyson everybody’s got a plan until you get punched in the mouth right everybody’s got a plan so what’s plan B uh Demich and I will tackle that in depth on Friday thank you for being with us today like comment rate review subscribe wherever you 1. You know someone who could also get an opportunity was a guy who was on our GLeague team last year Armando Bacot. I’d give him a shot until Edey came back.

  2. Clark -can’t defend big guys, poor rebounder, can’t shoot from the field or free throws, injury prone. Yeah, he is the guy. But hey, he is good at dunking and he looks cool.
