credible NBA writer reporter covering the whole gambit not uh just some website throwing out trade ideas this time of year but getting some good stuff here What could you tell us Keith about Jake Fischer’s report that the 76ers worked out VJ Edgecomb What last week What happened there Yeah last week Um you know it’s great reporting by him I mean the thing that stood out but it is kind of sort of it goes in line with what you and I talked about last week that the 76ers need to do their due diligence on everything before they decide right You know and you have to find reasons why not to draft Ace Bailey And based off of this uh based off of Jake Fischer’s reporting uh this is a reason why not to or could be a reason You know the 76ers were thrilled according to Jake on what they saw from VJ Edgecomb It got to a point where he had dinner and with Tyrese Maxi who flew into town to attend the dinner Um so it seems like everything is on the up and up with that And it just seems like they’re impressed with his work ethic They’re also impressed with they’re intrigued by what he can do defensively being paired next to Tyrese Maxi So to me it’s one of those things where that like we talked about they got to do everything they have to to see why you can’t draft Ace Bailey and why VJ Edgecomb as a two guard is going to fit into a crowded back court and be a difference maker Here’s the thing that jumps out to me and it’s one simple word T H E The the It’s not a He’s the prime candidate according to Jake Fischer for the 76ers to take at number three This is all but just saying verbatim yeah this is who the Sixers want to get after here And now look we can watch the we can go back and watch games during their brief college careers whether it’s Trey Johnson whether it’s VJ Edgecom or whether or not it’s Ace Bailey We can go back and we can look at all that stuff We can go back and watch highlights of these guys We could read about these guys and all that But what really what it comes down to is what happens during essentially the job interview What makes you tick Are you are you interested in the city of Philadelphia Are you interested in the 76ers How interested are you in reaching your fullblown potential Because I hate to say this but the knock on VJ Edgecom is that he’s too good already which is just a weird thing to say but it means that his ceiling is very high or excuse me his his floor is very high His ceiling is kind of low He’s not going to get much better than when he enters into the NBA where a guy like Ace Bailey a guy that you and I like his ceiling is very high He has a lot of room to grow here as an NBA player and can eventually be a dominant NBA player VJ Adcomm what you’re drafting is pretty much what you’re getting Now that’s not a horrible knock to have on a player but if you sit in that room and you talk about potentially how other people have uh lowered your ceiling and saying “No no no no I could break through the bar or the ceiling that people have set for me.” If you convince Daryl My Tyrese Maxi about how you want to match his work ethic then you’re talking about something special developing here in Philadelphia So prime candidate Keith is what jumped out to me Yeah it jumped out to me But the thing that that that really jumped out to me as right after that report came out a little while later is that the Sixers are going to work out Ace Bailey They’re going to have a private workout with him I know it’s only two weeks but they still have a long ways to go before they make up their mind You know what I mean to be 100% definite because you know what it says to me is maybe that they there could have been certain things when they interviewed Ace Bailey that maybe they didn’t really like or or maybe they just feel like this other guy was just a a better a better guy a better guy um as a person right and and not that’s not a knock I’m just talking about maybe more personable more they feel like he’s a harder worker or something like that but again they’re going to go back to Ace and they’ll see and here’s something else If BJ Edgecomb is really the guy and you’re 100% set on him either you’re going to take him right now or stuff is coming out to see who really wants to go get them and what they’re willing to get him for because you have to think that and let’s just say and everything is all about the best player available But if you are the Charlotte Hornets who picked number four you’re not gonna go after an Ace Belly because you already have a Brandon Miller So for the Charlotte Hornets the guy who would the guys who are in play are VJ Edgecomb and you think Trey Johnson So if you’re a team if if if you are like the 76ers and you’re saying “I really like VJ Edgecomb.” Well I’m going to the Utah Jazz and saying “What you guys willing to give me for that third pick?” Knowing that if you still want Ace there’s a good probability that Ace is going to be available at number five Now again the Sixers could be straight up and everything that they’re saying about this guy could be 100% accurate and they’re going to go all in on VJ Edgecomb However to me I always feel like you gotta you you have to do your due diligence and you have to see what teams are willing to get because if you can get Ace Bailey and an additional pick why not do that You know what I mean Why not do that So again yes he could be their guy He could be their guy But when you hear this coming out especially after you know uh sources were telling me that there are a lot of teams belhers who wanted who want to see what they have to give up to get that number three spot And it seems to me that these are two guys that people really want Trey and and and VJ So you’re saying that what’s the door the door that opens up with the potential of being more interested in VJ Edgecomb or you know saying great things about him trying to sell other teams on him certainly opens the door for the 76ers to possibly trade back acquire sorry to use the word assets more assets or a big asset in all of it and still get the player they want could now again like they could be like yeah they could be what they’re doing this could be legitimate right but at the same time the fact that you are saying it it does open up the door for a team to say “Well dang I really need him I I really need him.” Like if you’re the Utah Jazz and that’s who you want if that’s who you want or you want him or Trey Johnson it’s kind of sort of like if if I’m I’m not trying to get left out in the cold So I need to pull up move up and get him You know what I mean Danny Ames already said he’s not tanking next year So yeah So it does open up the door for a team that really wants this guy to slide up and the Sixers could slide back and get Ace Belly because I I do not see I don’t see I do not see the uh the Charlotte Horners drafting Ace Belly I don’t All right So let me put it like this The last thing I want to hear anything about is trading upper back with Danny A Okay That didn’t work out so so well the last time for the Sixers So that would be uh a little curse as far as I’m concerned Uh but the other thing is here I mean you’ve been following this for a long time And when it comes to these interviews to get back to just being able to be in the room with him and the idea of flying in Tyrese Maxi that’s not nothing That is that is something substantial You’re not doing that just to blow smoke on other teams You know what I mean To try to build up oh VJ we even flew in We’re really considering taking him So that is significant here How important do do the do the teams really put these one-on-one meetings How much emphasis do they really put on these one-on-one meetings with a potential draft pick Oh they’re they’re extremely significant because you want to see how you interact with people You want to you get more of the person’s personality It’s more of a like a relaxed setting Now again if you’re a draft pick you should be smart enough not to mess it up right Like don’t say anything stupid that you wouldn’t say in front of other people right So but at the same time you know you’re looking at this guy they work out You already interviewed right You had an interview with him like in in Chicago and stuff like that but right now it’s like you know you’re sitting there you’re it’s more a relaxed atmosphere over the dinner table So yeah they they’re extremely important And also you want to see and if you’re Tyrese Maxi you want to see how you know you want to get up close of how this person is And if you’re Daryl Moore you want to see how Tyrese Maxi interacts with him as well Yeah I want to pick your brain on that very subject when we return How would it work in that back and dump them out there on the floor and make it look organized Keith How would that work You know it’s it’s it’s not typically it’s not ideal you would think right having all these guards right But if we look at the Oklahoma City Thunder and you look at the Indiana Pacers they are proving that you can do it with smaller lineups right I mean you you look at the the the Indiana Pacers like they they essentially have um a three guard lineup right Starter and guards and then they bring in like Shephard they bring in McConnell and then they have Mack Mackin coming in right So they have all these guards a plethora of guards So it could work You know the the only thing is it’s kind of sort of I hate to say it the hard part for the 76ers are if you go out there well they do have they can match any offer that a team will go out and give Quinton Grimes So they can just get him no matter what But if you’re Quinton Grimes and you’re looking for an opportunity to start and be the guy and then you have this guy coming in um you’re hoping probably hoping and praying that somebody outbid the Sixers so you can get the playing time and get your next contract But but it could work It’s not ideal right But it these other two teams are showing that you can have interchangeable parts to come out there and and start and play and you can have success with it So it it it’ll make it work But to me from a fit standpoint you know I I just feel like Bailey if everything was equal that Bailey would be a better option Look yeah and I know we’re talking a lot about BJH I’m still on the Bailey bus I’m still you know riding that When when it comes to VJ Hcom the intriguing thing about him again is how he comes into the league so much more NBA ready Now that doesn’t mean that Bailey is anything close to a project It just means that he has a much higher ceiling The thing that I do love like watching all these guys the thing I do love about VJ Edgecom is his aggressiveness Like you can talk about fearlessness with somebody And I look at a guy like uh Ace Bailey as a guy who’s not afraid to make a play whether that’s a big block whether that’s getting rebounds whether that’s a guy to attack the basket shoot from the outside VJ Edgecom has a lot of that but one thing he definitely has that’s over Ace Bailey is explosiveness I mean you look at guys right now I mean just watching Anthony Edwards through the finals or excuse me through the playoffs you’re seeing an explosiveness to the rim Watching a guy like Donovan Mitchell throughout his career you see an explosiveness to the rim Now I’m not making that the the bar for him but just in terms of that one aspect of his game VJ Edgecom definitely has that Very aggressive a rim attacker Uh he has that ability to almost freeze midair to get another foot higher in his jump It’s it’s miraculous guys that can do that and he’s certainly one of them Uh when you look at the point guard position though for the Sixers who’s going to be organizing for lack of a better word the chaos Who’s going to make it all make sense if you do have that many guards in the back court It’s going to have to be Maxi I mean it really is I mean which I know turns off a lot of people People don’t like that Yeah A lot of people don’t Um but you know it’s going to have to like he’s going to have to be the head of the snake and that’s that’s going to be I mean let’s let’s face it he has shown some progression in there Now again he has to work on what happens when teams are trapping and and things like that but it’s going to be Maxi You know also there’s going to have to be certain times where you know PG is going to have to handle the ball and set people up you know from a a point forward um standpoint Um but um yeah I mean like when we look at it you know he’s the best guy that they have And I know that there are certain people who like Quinton Grimes but you know he’s more of a a secondary ball handler a backup point guard so to speak And the same thing with um you know McCain Jared McCain So right now Maxi is your best option at the one and then probably Paul George you know handling the ball from time to time Uh now before I move on to talk a little bit more about Tyrese Maxi and that’s something you have mentioned before just in terms of his uh court visibility being able to set up his teammates as a more legit point guard so more so than a shooting guard as a next step forward in his career Uh but I just want to put it out there I’ve I’m still going for Ace Bailey That’s still the guy I want I hope I hope he checks every box that he just checked with the Sixers in his uh you know meeting and workout last week And I hope Ace Bailey has dinner with Tyrese Maxi as well you know Um so where are you at at this point Are you still with Ace Bailey or have you been uh swayed a little bit in the direction of VJ Mcome VJ Edgecom excuse me Yeah No it’s cool It’s cool Um you know what I’m still a I’m still with you I’m still Ace Bailey And And you know the thing about Ace Bailey is maybe this could be serve as a wakeup call right You know because when we talk about stuff what are they saying They’re they’re talking about him you know his work ethic all these other things And the Sixers are saying like “Yeah you might be the guy and you may have some skills whatever but you know we want somebody that’s going to come in here and and and and bust their tail and run through a wall right?” And and and and like to me you know the thing I like about Ace Bailey is and I heard that some people may say “Oh he takes plays off He does things like this.” But the one thing that keeps sticking out to me is when not just Paul George saying how much he loves his game but when you have Carmelo Anthony a Hall of Famer saying he reminds me of myself and Tracy McGrady and all this stuff To me that’s something you can’t pass up Now here’s something else too So BJ Edgecombone went to Long Island Lutheran High School right in Brookville Carmelo Anony’s son went to Long Island Lutheran High School in Brookville The guy that Carmelo Anthony is hyping up is Ace Bailey Not his not the guy who went to school with his son So when you when you hear stuff like that now again he might think DJ is a good too but when you’re raving over this guy who didn’t go to school with your son I’m listening You know what I mean I’m listening Now VJ could be a great player but to me it’s just I think that uh to me Ace has to show the 76ers that he can do all those things that he can as far when it comes down to a motor But but that Carmelo endorsement that’s the thing that I keep going back to Okay Uh before I I go further uh with that I I I do want to bring this to your attention cuz and I’m sure you you look at this I know you always are asking questions for the mailbag answer questions during the offseason for the Sixers and all that for your articles at inquire.com and just you know get some conversation going with people But I couldn’t help You did put out last week or should me yesterday’s show when it came to how I am absolutely opposed to trading Tyrese Maxi Yesterday’s show the whole point of it that we were talking about Keith was this trade that was just made up thrown out there as a proposal that would help the Suns and not so much help the 76ers It was essentially Maxi two first round picks if you didn’t see it assign a trade with Quinton Grimes for Devin Booker and that’s it So we both said no I said I’m not trading Titus Maxi anyway So here’s the thing that was surprising to me Keith on that show comments on that show on your ex feed or Twitter feed whatever Uh I’m looking at Coupe said I’d do it Okay Uh I’m looking at DJ Soul R I’ve been saying trade maxi for a year Okay Uh John in a heartbeat Uh McKenzie James face palm Thank goodness Okay So I think he’s on our team Um I’m surprised not just by these people but also on the people that were in our comments I’m surprised by how many people were willing to trade Tyrese Maxi I think the Sixers would be on crazy pills to trade Tyrese Maxi And I also think that if you want to trade Tyrese Maxi that means you want to blow up the Sixers again and go through another process Am I Am I bonkers Keith for thinking that I mean no you’re not bonkers for thinking that I mean like you know like like like for uh for Devin Booker that would be okay We got a window right here Let’s try to do it But outside of that you’re right I mean you know here’s the thing The fact that Tyrese Maxi came into town to have dinner with a guy lets you know that the Sixers have no intention of trading Tyrese Maxi Secondly you know Tyrese Maxi unfortunately for the Sixers he may be the only person on the team this year who keep him relevant in regards to games And and and again I’m not saying that these other two guys aren’t relevant but we don’t know what their injury history We don’t I mean we know what their injury history is We don’t know how healthy they’re going to be this upcoming season So if you trade away the only healthy guy you got who’s like on an allstar level type of player then what do you have You know I mean what do you have So nah like I mean I get it There are certain people who think that like trade him now while the value is high this and that or or maybe like they don’t like the way that he runs an offense and things like that And I get all that but at the same time look there’s no way in heck I’m trading that one Nah not at all Not at all So I I was I my thought was do people really want to go through another process Is that what they want They want to go through another pro Is that what they want Because I was hesitant Keith on even the idea of tanking for the last whatever it was 30 40 games of last year I was even hesitant to do that And then once Tyrese Max was like “Yeah I can’t play.” I’m like “All right lose Just lose Just lose Lose.” didn’t lose uh and they did and now they have the third overall pick So I’m I’m excited at least for that Uh Keith when we come back I do want to get a little bit more into uh the Ace Bailey discussion over VJ Edgecom why we still like him over that sp over VJ Edgecomb at this point And also uh I want to get into it’s going to be one of the hottest days of the year to this point in early June 91 in Philadelphia I need to know how a uh the kid the child version of you Keith Pompei back in the day and me too for that matter keep cool on a hot day Okay I’m going to ask you that question through every every report that comes out every conversation about a workout I will maintain this point of view is the perfect fit right now for the 76ers and he is the rare rare draft pick When you have a pick like this a top three pick in any draft he’s the rare occasion of being both the perfect fit and the guy to grow with as well I love his shot selection I love the ability that he has to create his own shot I love that he could get to the the the uh the rim with aggression at his size I love that he is going to probably fill out as his NBA career certainly goes on I don’t think you need him to fill out quite like Shawn Bradley back in the day Uh but he’s certainly someone that could put you know put a couple of pounds on of of muscle to do that But as of right now I love his game how it fits into the 76ers And I also love how his game can grow into a more dominant role with the Sixers in his career goes on Do you view him in a similar way Keith Oh definitely Definitely And and here’s the thing like um so it it also comes down to the veterans on the team like if you feel like this guy if you feel like this guy needs to work harder right This and that and and it that’s where Tyrese Maxi comes into play That’s where Paul George comes into play That’s where Kyle Lowry comes into play right And and you know and the reason why I’m saying that is it’s like you know you always hear these stories about these rookies who come into the league and they learned everything from their vet And it’s kind of like it’s it’s different than it’s more than just saying “Hey go get me some Chick-fil-A for the flight.” Or “Hey where’s the donuts Hey you’re carrying my bags.” You know and then you also have you know also have Jared McCain who’s a hard worker It’s more like “Hey man where are you going?” Okay I’m I’mma share two stories with you Two stories So you know um Malik Rose sure In Philly he played he played for the San Antonio Spurs won the ring with him a couple of them He is best friends with Tim Duncan right That’s his best friend So he told me a story one day when Tim was a rookie and that was his first year there And they play the game Tim Duncan has a phenomenal game and they’re like all excited and they’re leaving the game and they’re about it was like they’re about to go out and celebrate whatever As they walk as they’re leaving like walking down the hall they look in the wait room and David Robinson was in there getting the workout in and David Robinson looked at him They turned around went back to the locker room and put in put on like shorts and a t-shirt and had and went in there and and joined them and Robinson was like “Nah it ain’t time to party We got to work out.” Another story I’m going share with you was you know I’m talking to Paul George once and I’m like “Yo P like yo when did you like what was it like when you you know when you were in college You know you were at Fresno State this and that you know like did you know you were going to the league?” and he says “Yeah I hope.” Yeah that was the plan He told me that on weekends when his teammates were out some of his teammates were out partying having a good time he was in the gym He was putting up shots He was doing all types of stuff So what I’m trying to say is when you get veterans like that Paul George has a great work ethic right But when you have a veteran like Paul George and David Robinson and let’s face it uh Kyle Lowry has a great work ethic what they’re going to do is they’re going to take this young guy under his wing and they’re going to say “Bro you’re in the league now This is what you have to do to stay in stay in it.” So I’m not concerned like others Now again if he doesn’t heed their advice then we have a problem If this was the old Sixers when you know the culture was like destroyed and everything like that oh yeah you don’t want to bring them in the hair But when you have Tyrese Maxi Jared McCain Paul George um Kyle Lowry guys like that even down to Eric Gordon if he comes back a older guy but who’s been around you know I I think this is the type of environment that will make you change your ways And that’s what that’s what’s the great thing about having veteran leadership H building a winning culture sounds lovely I’d love to enjoy that Keith uh Keith before we wrap up I do have to ask uh Keith Pompei in your childhood Uh where were how were you keeping cool on a day where it’s supposed to be 91 degrees in Philly See it’s crazy So where I grew up at is I grew up in the Frankfurt section and I grew up on the corner of Fuk Rod and Fuk Rod and um and Takawana streets right And what we had was we had a a fire hydrant and what happened is people would un un like you know let it loose and the water would come out and it was like a easy uh place to to be and just easy relief Now we also had a a a boy we had a YMCA but you had to walk a mile to go there So we would do that from time to time but a lot of times you know unfortunately I was one of those kids who spent a lot of time you know and in the fire with the hard pressure of water was smacking me and knocking me to the ground But we had fun as a youth What about you I can I can say I can say I I did one fire hydrant in my life We visited my friends of my mom I think it was lived in northeast Philly and they the kids were outside they’re like oh we’re gonna open the fire hydrant and I was like is that I must have been second grade third grade and I live I grew up in the suburbs so I had no idea what they were talking about I I thought it meant something else but no it literally was the fire hydrant and they went outside they open it up and the kids are just running through it and I was like that looks like the coolest thing ever I looked at my mom she goes ahead and I run out and oh man as a second or third grader I forget what I was but it was it was an absolute blast The only other thing as a as a kid I remember if my neighbors had a pool we’d go in the pool But the best was we got a crocodile I think it was called crocodile alley Mhm Which was like a slip and slide but it had a bump You’d go over the bump and through like a little curtain that had a gator a gator on it or a crocodile on it and you’d hit the bump You’d go through the crocodile and land in a little tiny pool of water at the end of it Yeah that was the greatest thing I remember my brother and I saw the commercial and I think it was one of those things we begged months and months and months our parents to get and they did And I still remember the jingle You run you slide you hit the bump and take a dive It was like that late 80s early 90s commercial jingle that’ll just never leave your head man Never leave your head Uh hey we got a lot to get into tomorrow when it comes to the 76ers as well We’ll continue to monitor this I know you said they’re going to bring in Ace Bailey Do we do you want to hear more I don’t know exactly when but he’s coming I mean yeah I don’t know when So you know but the thing is like again like we talked about it none of this is surprising I mean it’s that they that the word got out but they’re going to you know you got to do your due diligence with this one because of the magnitude of this pick I mean you know we talked about it We already know who’s going number one and who’s going number
