Hot Takes or Toast: Should the Utah Jazz trade or keep their draft picks?

dj PK question of the morning with the draft looming now less than two weeks away should the Jazz trade or keep the draft picks what would you do keep those picks what will you What would you expect them to do want them to do hope they would do jason throwing his hands up do you really think it’s going to make a difference yes it has to yeah one way or the other right if they miss the misery continues if they hit let the let the games begin was he the Olympics sure yes yes it’s going to make a difference how does it not make a difference that’s the dumbest question posed this week jason just sounds like he’s frustrated and he thinks it’s never going to get better oh Jason jason Jason it’s all about you all the time i’m so sick of Jason jason Jason Jason Vernon make a deal with Charlotte or Brooklyn brooklyn has too many picks and I’m sure they want to do a deal he’s sure andy says “I really like Brandon Milling.” Miller from Charlotte he’s going to be like SJA he’s going to be a superstar in the NBA could we possibly trade our picks and get Brandon Miller you talking to me are you That’s what he writes that’s what he’s That’s his deal you just think about uh the last time they had picks that were high as this high right i think you have to go back what was the 11 draft probably forget that i think you went on a month-long vacation or something that that year and uh you don’t have to call it the draft i’ve got it okay it’s all right well you phrased it as a question not to you though ah so they had the third pick and then what was Burk’s 12th uh and so you look at that draft right and Kyrie Irving went one and you remember that Derek Williams he had the hot NCA tournament coming out of Arizona right minnesota not so much canter didn’t even play because he had some NCA thing and yeah back in the the days when the NCA had some teeth and so he couldn’t he sat out the year it was all about uh one one allstar one guys we play for seven years in the pros overseas sure come on over what grade do you want to be and so they go with him right and you had guys like Klay Thompson certainly Kawhi Leonard was available and supposedly draft those guys that changes everything you had You could have drafted Klay Thompson and Leonard yes with the 12th pick that changes everything man are you kidding me klay Thompson went 11th he could have taken him with the third pick if you wanted right and they took Alle Burks to 12 when Kawhai was going to go 15 right and so you take him i don’t remember Jack about Alec Burks in 2011 but I know a lot about Kawhi Leonard jimmy Butler was also on the board went 30th in that draft so there were talented players out there yeah you got to take some of his baggage too he hasn’t been baggage free and obviously you can you could say Kawawaii has but Kawawaii has gotten you to the mountaintop uh even with the baggage Jimmy Butler hasn’t but it’s still a very nice pick no doubt about it obviously uh so you got those things going on there and can you imagine if you took those guys it changes what would be the same if you kept if you had those guys nothing so to say that this couldn’t change is absolutely untrue 100% i have no idea so that’s what 14 years ago so in uh wow think about it 2039 look back on this draft and say that wow if they would have done this or man thank goodness they did this you know maybe it works the other way right this is in retrospect big time 14 years is a long time in pro well you can you can play it the other way if you just go back to the goaron Mitchell drafts and if they do something different yeah you can go you just go any way you want to but I’m just they didn’t have pick they didn’t have two picks like this no here they do and so what’s it going to be and I I I don’t say how I think Bo Young Bangdonovich was a late uh was a second round pick in that draft too and he he turned out to be you know he’s he’s not a big- time differencemaker but he was a nice player or is see if he can come back um or certainly was here so to say this doesn’t matter no this this this is essentially how these guys the management folks will be judged this is their tests this is like the bar exam or the thesis and for your master’s degree or whatever it might be this is literally how you’ll be judged thousand times over and you can go back to just a couple years ago they had uh what nine and 16 the reason why I went back to the other draft because that’s so long ago that it’s conclusive okay this guy’s a player this guy’s not a player blah blah blah it’s played out they’ve had their careers two years ago is is too soon you still don’t know right we’re talking about Brandon Miller he was one of those guys that was drafted two years ago can he be a superstar in this league maybe you know he had some injuries this year so he hasn’t played two full seasons and we’re seeing the the Thompson kid for Houston all right yeah looks like there’s something there right fourth pick in the draft right you know what’s he going to do what level it’s just that two years isn’t enough to to make uh extensive evaluations but I think the uh two years ago the Warriors picked up the kid who uh I think he went to Illinois transferred to Santa Clara uh Podzinski yep looks like and I mean he’s not a star by any stretch but it looks like he’s a player right haimey Hawkins down in Miami looks like he’s a player they were 18th and 19th so they were on the board for a long time yeah if you want to equate it to this year if you’re 21 you can probably find a way to move up if that’s your guy and you think your guy’s going at 18 or 19 find a way to move up to 16 or 17 or whatever it takes but outside of wina no none of these guys have really just dominated this level but they but so you need some more time i think Thompson in Houston is the next guy that people we don’t know yet whereas in 2011 all the evaluations are in the grades are in they’re recorded that’s why I went back to there because I realized they had two picks just a couple years ago but it’s just too soon particularly with Hendrickx having the injury and not even playing virtually the entire season so it’s impossible who’s to say in 2039 which just seems outrageous that we’d be talking about that that you don’t the the Jazz fans don’t look back man that Hendrickx pick that was pretty sweet man he really blossomed all the all the stuff that DA saw in him with uh the athleticism and just the work ethic man he really turned out to that was just that was so awesome blah blah blah that really once he came back and got his uh legs under him and all wow that was a trigger that led to a pretty impressive rebuild and I hope that I’ll be long dead but I hope the folks can say that you’ll be long dead i will be there’s no doubt in my mind okay you’ll see i’ll come back and tell you okay so that could very well be right that’s not shocking uh to think that well remains to be seen i think with Hendrickx you’ll probably at least have a decent player uh to what level of decent remains to be seen so the point being man to reiterate for the 15th time that this draft this is huge this is potentially courseal altering pathdefining if you if you pick one of those guys that you talk about i mean Denver with a second round pick changed their history milwaukee with a mid-first round pick changed the course of that franchise so yeah those those guys are there but good luck figuring out who they are that’s their ch that’s their test that’s their test that’s why they’re getting paid the big money so and getting the expense accounts to fly over fly all over the world and watch these guys and talk to them and talk to people who know them and figure out because it isn’t just the talent it’s the burning desire to win after you’ve after you seemingly have conquered most burn baby burn after you have conquered most of uh life’s trials and tribulations and the finances are all set and you got a ton of money and a long-term contract how hard do you want to work how badly do you want it yeah how much do you want to win how much do you want to be whatever you are how much do you want to be the very best of that one because all of us are uh different on the on the ladder some are at the top some are at the middle we’re talking about TJ uh McConnell yesterday you know he’s uh well NBA wise not just YMCA wise but NBA wise he’s middle maybe lower middle but yet man he just bust it he’s out there i You want 15 minutes of solid play i’m your guy and all that stuff is important yeah he’s probably thinking I could give you 20 minutes but you’re only giving me 15 so I’m going to make the most of it i could do this for 20 oh he probably thinks he can do it for 40 that’s what you want yeah so I can’t underestimate or understate better word how important this thing is these this this very draft should the Jazz trade or keep the draft picks mark’s good with either depends on the offers well I don’t think the offer is going to be such a killer that wow that could change it i think it’s gonna come through the draft so uh I don’t I get what he’s saying because everything is relative to what you’re offered and what you can actually do but I don’t think they can do that much to where they can really make a difference i don’t think they have anybody on their roster that possibly outside of uh Markin but even him I would say no because you’re not going to just trade a draft pick for a player it’s not the way the system works so you’re going to attach some players or player and what could you get in return you know maybe you can get you can certainly get somebody from some help i don’t think there’s any question about that but I don’t know if you can get some big time and th this is your this is your shot this is the highest pick that this group of folks this group of management folks has or has had and they they’ve got to connect and we’ve got to see some development this year too it can’t be a situation where well let’s wait and see basically they can’t draft a Cody Williams i’m not ready to seal the fate on Cody Williams but I’m going to make that abundantly clear no but when they draft way more progress than we saw to him you could look at him and say “Look at the body he’s got to gain weight.” And it was still disappointing it was anyway I don’t care what his body looked like it was still but the second they drafted him you were thinking “All right well let’s see where he is in three years.” But I still expected more i got I gotta have more than that you expected him to start down the path and that didn’t happen i got to see way more than he had showed than he showed in 2024 25 out of the fifth pick i obviously it’s it’s a higher pick i have higher standards it just goes along with it no it’s the best pick they’ve had since they had the fifth pick in 2014 it’s been a long time so they get a good swing here we’ll see who they can land and what they can figure out it’s a must it’s an absolute must chad says if they can make a trade and still keep the two picks in the top five and still keep two picks in the top five do it otherwise just keep the picks at five and 21 that would be my dream scenario for them to find a way to get the the second pick in the top five uh e anyway whatever combin combination you want to have you could have one five two five 35 four five any of them is good enough that would be I’d be ecstatic for the Jazz if they could do that yeah teams don’t usually trade out of those spots understood but make the phone calls and see what they’re thinking i’d probably land on uh 62 so if I went uh say “Wow they got the fifth and sixth pick.” I’d say “Yeah that’s really good because I I believe they can get players at that level that can really help them.” How many players do you see in that next group is it Everything is three to four everything is three to four yeah at five I see they can draft three to four at six I can see they can draft three to four oh I see what you’re saying okay you don’t have a firm like okay now it really falls off there uh I haven’t thought beyond six because or seven because the players that I would have at six three to four they’d be there at seven and eight right so I guess two spots after that and that’s just for what it’s worth that’s not like wow I’d take that to the bank man that’s just what Man if they if they draft Knife forget it they’re hosed cuz who knows they don’t even know but you like Edgecomb do you like Canipple and people that I’ve Oh I’ve liked him all along jeremiah excuse me Jeremiah Ferris from Oklahoma that has been an introduction uh from what I’ve heard from conversations and so cuz if that group takes you out to seven you know yeah yeah yeah right that’s why I didn’t want to put go at eight yes and so the two people that I’ve come around to after having conversations with people that I respect is Malwatch and Fierce everybody above them you’re already in on it yes now I’m starting to see some mock drafts where Ace Bailey really falls that’s true i think the word is circulating the co it seems like and it seems like this this this happens a fair amount you have some guys that get hot like we just spoke about Derek Williams that was the NCA tournament man and really kicked butt and so he people jumped up there he didn’t do anything in the pros um and then on the flip side there’s something that uh somebody who falls a little bit and in the end uh what does it mean okay you made your decision to not take this guy and take that guy so now we got him on board and what do you see so you don’t really know and then you get out there and and I’m not a big believer and I know this is going to irritate a lot of BYU fans that oh it’s got you hear the cliche it’s got to be the right situation i don’t I don’t buy that in basketball i can buy it more in football so I’ll give you slack on Zack Wilson but I don’t really buy it in basketball in the positionless game you’ll figure something out well I even when they had positions that were more clearly defined I think if you’re good enough you’re good enough and they’ll play you i mean you’re a history major in the sports sense name me someone who was drafted and oh that’s a bad situation but then he went somewhere else and really really kicked butt and SGA no i don’t think he would have been this good no matter where he was uh Chanty Bilips is a guy who probably bounced around a lot and then figured it out but was that the situation or was that him figuring it out well that’s his teams trading him yeah that’s a lot of guys to go through to be or a lot of teams to go through at a young age to end up having the career he had he was solid i think he’s overrated actually he was just because he was uh he was sage and he was steady and people liked him and he ended up in a good situation with Detroit with a lot of good teammates around him so you can make big plays because they were in big games yeah I think I mean it’s like six straight Eastern Conference Finals he lived up to what he was capable of doing and that’s up you need to allow some folks but I don’t think that I just I don’t see Jimmer Fet oh man he went to that crappy situation in Sacramento I get it you’re a BYU fan and you love the guy we all love the guy the guy has no enemies it was a tough situation but it didn’t work anywhere he got multiple chances other places and it didn’t pan out it’s still a dream come true so I’m not knocking what he accomplished and he it’s a little white dude from nowhere in New York upstate and he made the NBA that alone is a word of the Curt Warner movie in my mind it is yeah and he’s just a gem of a person jimmer for death is a winner in life and that’s what matters the most right good dude and he doesn’t have to come anywhere near nine to five in it yes so Jimmer has succeeded in the things that matter the most so what that he wasn’t an allar he didn’t score 20,000 points in the NBA yeah that’s like well there you go that is so meaningless in the game of life so let’s make that abundantly clear if you go to China or Italy or Spain or wherever and make your millions yeah it’s not that bad this is about winning the game of life so some of these guys who didn’t pan out as long as they’ve won the game of life who really cares I don’t are you happy do you have it going on do you have a good family do you have a good spouse those types of things when Travis Hansen comes on the air does he sound miserable no he doesn’t to me so make sure everybody says that that and whether so-called quote unquote failure in the NBA oh my gosh most of them what’s the average length in the NBA you know in pro sports it’s just everybody wants to get there till they get to the pinion and you do hear that a lot when you talk to players on the side right you don’t hear it for the guys who end up playing the 10 12 years right they get past it and Yeah yeah yeah right because they don’t need it at that point probably as long as they manage their money correctly uh but yeah so let’s make sure that we underscore that but I don’t particularly in basketball the situation doesn’t really concern me because if you’re that good you help make the situation better now you’re talking and where’s that guy that’s what you were talking about earlier well we just Thompson at 11 and Kawhi Leonard right and Giannis and the Joker and you just look around the NBA and and look at the you know we’re going through this stretch where we have six different champs in six years we’re about to have seven and seven and those guys at least got one for those teams toronto didn’t draft Kawhi Leonard but they got their hands on him and they got one because I could argue when Steph Curry goes to Warriors and they hadn’t made the playoffs in a decade is that a good situation no did he make it a good situation yes he helped make it a great situation a generational situation the greatest times in the history of that franchise you know it’s interesting because they had an ownership change there and that stuff matters and they had a popular high-scoring guard there but it wasn’t he was getting stats but they weren’t really leading to winning they traded him and the new owner got booed like he didn’t know what he was doing yeah the new owner and he won four titles the previous owner didn’t go to playoffs in 17 years was Mont Ellis who they traded and the place went nuts in the history of basketball Steph Curry Monte Ellis Jerry West is up there whispering in the owner’s ear trade Monte Ellis make time for Steph Curry put the ball in why would he be shouting it he might have yeah behind closed doors well because he’s he was a whack job i saw that HBO thing yeah I knew you were going to bring that up he was like dropping people at the putting green at LA Country Club or something riviera yeah he might have been older in Melor by the time he got to the Warriors he would he did contest that uh that picture of him no one was like that man dropping breathing fire every moment of your life dropping people at the club yes throwing stuff through door windows yeah but he’d been on to Memphis and Yeah all right dj PK it’s 975 the zone pab master on the RL head coach coming up at 8:30 bob Casper Real Golf Radio co-host at 9ine DJ and PK
