76ers Fans Get BIG NEWS On VJ Edgecombe Ahead Of The 2025 NBA Draft

[Music] ace Bailey fans you might not love what we’re talking about here on today’s show as VJ Edgecomb is now emerging as the favorite for the Sixers at pick number three if they do hold on to that selection And according to the betting odds really anywhere you look I got these from FanDuel but you can go to any sports book and they’ll have very similar odds at the moment BJ Edgecom a minus 125 favorite If you don’t know how betting odds work if you’re a minus that means you’re the favorite Plus you’re the underdog So VJ the favorite at minus 125 Ace Bailey who had been the favorite previously sliding down to second at plus 230 And then Trey Johnson at plus 460 no one else really particularly close to those three So this is a big change and a big shift in terms of who is expected to be picked by the Sixers So how did this happen we’ll get into that here in just a moment But another reminder about our race to 25,000 subscribers here at Chat Sports between us at 76ers now and that sub button and let’s catch the Miami Heat report So what changed why is VJ Edgecom now the favorite to be picked by the Sixers at pick number three well it’s been reported that he had a meeting with Philadelphia and Philadelphia’s draft meetings have been pretty tight We don’t haven’t really heard a whole lot about any of their plans or who they’re bringing in for workouts and meetings but it was reported BJ met with the Sixers and he impressed them in what he was able to show in that building And here’s Jake Fischer talking about Philly’s new approach in this meeting with VJ The prime candidate at number three At this juncture appears to be Baylor freshman guard VJ Edgecom who sources say visited with the Sixers last week There’s an expectation Philadelphia w will bring in Rucker’s ace Bailey down the road I have not heard of a workouty scheduled to this date Quick update before I was about to film this show He will be coming in next week So Ace Bailey will be coming in for a workout next week Edgecom is said to have impressed with his work ethic personality and interviews He went to dinner with Daryl my other Sixers higher-ups Even Tyrese Maxi flew in for the occasion So pretty serious stuff there The Sixers certainly intrigued by what type of defensive compliment Edgecom could provide their all-star guard sources say in addition to his explosive upside on the offensive side of the ball Edgecom’s work out with the Sixers the only known visit for the Bohemian national team Our sources say several teams are of belief he might only work out with Philadelphia although it’s still very early in the draft process And what is notable there really that last part that last few sentences from Jake Fischer BJ Edgecom has only worked out with the 76ers up to this point Now we still have 12 days as of this recording until the 2025 NBA draft starts on Wednesday June 25th So still some time of course for him to get in with other teams But look as of this moment the fact that he’s only worked out for the Sixers is very very telling And we’ve heard reports that the Sixers really have a group of four guys that they are locked in on I imagine that’s Dylan Harper Trey Johnson Ace Bailey and VJ Edgecom And now VJ by being able to get in the building earlier than Ace seems like he has a fast track right now to be that pick at number three And according to Keith Pompei sources believe the Sixers are split on Ace Bailey So VJ now really becoming that favorite Ace Bailey we know he’s a pretty polarizing prospect right somebody that some people are more higher on with his long-term upside and his long-term development but also someone that struggled at Ruckers and really did show some deficiencies in terms of his ball handling and his shot selection some questions on the defensive end of the floor as well So I can see why and it makes sense why people in the Sixers building are more split on a player like Ace because it seems like all of NBA Twitter and all of the draft community is pretty split on Ace So let’s talk a little bit more about VJ as a player because I’m an ace guy So I’ve done a lot more talking about Ace Bailey here on the show We haven’t really dived deep into VJ’s game quite yet and if he’s going to be that pick or at least the favorite as of now Want to get you guys informed on who he is as a player So guard out of Baylor was a freshman this year 19 years old Little bit on the shorter side about 6’5 193 with a 6’7 and a half wingspan So measurables aren’t great not bad either But when you pair it with his athleticism that’s where things start to get very very exciting His lone season at Baylor was solid 15 points five and a half rebounds you see that over two steals per game number defensively is really where he has made a name for himself paired with his athleticism Not super efficient but he did really get better as the year went on which is something you’d like to see out of such a young player Again as I mentioned that explosive athleticism really shows up with his ability to finish at the basket Although it’s not as good as you might hope it to be given the athleticism it still is a plus there especially in transition and defensively That is the reason you’re really drafting BJ is his defensive ability And he has shown the ability to develop into an elite shooter on the perimeter Now the results haven’t always been there It’s been a little bit inconsistent but from what you’ve seen from him it looks like he has the tools to be able to develop there still working on his creation off the dribble Somebody that will need to get better as an isolation scorer if he wants to become an all-star level player one day Some more on his pros and cons as a player that I’ve seen diving in him a little bit Again the elite athleticism I’m going to keep saying it because it’s on the level where early in the process some people were comparing this man to Vince Carter He’s not going to be Vince Carter At least I wouldn’t project that right now but that should let you know what kind of athlete he already is He’s also very unselfish and plays in the flow of an offense Not someone who’s going to be a black hole offensively and get the ball and just go to work and take his own shots He really is going to be able to move off the ball make good cuts and something the Sixers you know they could use another guy who really does play within that flow and the defensive playmaking right just being able to get in the passing lanes use his athleticism on all sides of the defense like it really is truly special easily the best defender in this draft class Now as Khan’s mentioned off dribble shooting when you think about his long-term upside that’s a skill that really does separate some of these guys coming out of college Are you able to create your own shot he needs to develop that for sure That comes with the handle as well being a little bit loose a little bit careless with the ball and does need to get stronger which would help him finish at the rim better to pair up again with that athleticism was second team all Big 12 this past season as again a true freshman the Big 12 freshman of the year Obviously of course also the Big 12 all freshman team and was a Jerry West award finalist Did not win the award but was one of the finalists That award goes to the best shooting guard in all of college basketball Obviously tells you how highly thought of and how well he played last year at Baylor as they did also make a little bit of a run in the NCA tournament but got bounced by Duke I do believe very very similar to a young Victor Oladipo If you remember when Oladipo was drafted with the Orlando Magic was pretty quiet honestly to start his career He was what the fifth overall pick back in I want to say 2013 and didn’t do a whole lot with Orlando Showed a little bit but then he went to Indiana and we saw him really being able to put everything together He was always a good defender and he was always athletic when he was with Orlando but once he got to Indiana he was given the keys and he developed that handle He developed that jump shot to a point where he was an all-star level guard with highlevel defense Of course the injuries and everything we didn’t really get to see prime Oladipo for too long but if you’re getting a prime Victor Oladipo kind of player in VJ Edgecomb man that is a talented player and you understand why he’s one of the more highly touted prospects in this class and he really does fit the mold of somebody who I could see Daryl my being interested in as a prospect Somebody who by all accounts is an extremely extremely hard worker who has a great personality as well You think about the guys the Sixers have drafted over the past few years under Daryl my think of a Tyrese Maxi I think of a Jared McCain Even an Adam Bona fits into this criteria Guys who really really hard workers and guys who have great personalities as well Also VJ does really seem like a Daryl my guy Now again for him to reach that higher ceiling because you kind of know what he is as a player right now He’s going to be a good defender He’ll be able to run in transition play in the flow of the offense But if you want somebody who can have an even higher long-term upside he has to get that ISO scoring that handle down and that shot needs to remain consistent If it does and he’s able to prove that at his little bit smaller height at about 6’5 he can guard some bigger wings I’m talking guys that are 6’8 69 on that wing man he would be again just a tremendous two-way level player who can do it all for you And again that’s the appeal of someone like VJ over someone like Ace Bailey But I’m still on the Ace Bailey train Now we talked about the Sixers maybe moving up to number two to draft Dylan Harper If that’s on the table that’s in the cards I’m doing it 100% But if they stay at number three I’m still on Ace Bailey I feel like he just has higher potential to become a true franchise level player with his shot making ability His size fits a little bit better into this Sixers team right now And I’m more confident in Ace’s abilities to play off the ball and play a role rather than always need the ball than others are Some people are concerned Ace Bailey can’t play without the ball I think he can So look I like BJ Edgecom a lot and I think he’s going to be a solid solid player but I think Ace just has that higher potential with that skill set with his height I would bet that Ace Bailey ends up having a better career than VJ although I do still like VJ So pick one to draft I know this is the big debate among Sixers fans And look right now it’s looking like VJ is going to be the guy but still 12 days away Sean Strania said today that there’s a lot coming out of this Sixers draft and trade rumors and all that that he doesn’t know how much truth there is to a lot of these things So it’s a lot of smoke screens Daryl my does not want people to know what their plans are as ahead in a draft night But pick one If the draft was right now you’re on the clock Who are you taking for Philadelphia give
