AAFA 2025 Season Week 12 – Pittsburgh Hornets (3-7) @ Michigan Rhinos (4-6)
[Music] ladies and gentlemen on your feet and welcome your Welcome to Ford Field here in the motor A perfect afternoon for football under the dome Watkins will be kicking this one off to get us started This will be down to the end zone for a touchback They’ll get the ball here at the 20 and we’ll have a first down and 10 Throws to his left knocked out of bounds at the 32 yd line Patience for a wide receiver is just so key He’s able to manipulate that defense set him up one play come back with the exact same look and break off of it the next Beautifully run It’s first and 10 looking for a man Passes short right side He’s dropped down right around the 34 yd line by Mack number 48 Grab that one for a gain of two Second down and eight here has a man out to his right Wallace was the intended receiver Here they go Third down and eight [Applause] Short pass to his left It’s complete He’s going to go down almost immediately though A gain of three yds on that one Really nowhere for the wide receiver to go on that one I’m not sure if the quarterback realized it was man coverage on that play So it’s fourth down Looks like they’ll kick it away here as the punt Number 11 will start his return to the 24 Man those guys were flying down the field He didn’t have a chance on that one His blocker’s got to do something for that poor guy out there or he’s going to get killed They’ll start at the 27 yd line Now we have a first down and 10 to go Fires a strike to the right He’s brought down right around the 38 yd line by number 52 [Applause] First down and 10 [Applause] And he’s tackled right around the 44 yd line by number 55 They’ll need about three yardds here on second down Freeman on the give dropped behind the line and it looked like this defensive line just beat him off the snap Sometimes those guys can time out the quarterback’s cadence And if the quarterback doesn’t start changing that snap count his offensive line’s going to really struggle The offense is now looking at third and five throws it to the middle He makes another catch And this receiver just loves it when the defense is in man coverage Yeah there’s no better feeling than when you’re coming off the ball and you know it’s just you and the guy across from you That’s just good oldfashioned football But you also know typically when you get man coverage your quarterback is under pressure First down 10 to go Number five with the pitch He’s wrestled down right around the 36 yd line by number 52 Second down and seven yds to go Ball on the 36 yd line Freeman gets the ball He’s tackled around the 32 yd line by Terrell So another third down coming up for the offense dumps it out right He’s dropped down right around the 24 yd line by Calhoun [Applause] And we’ll have a first down and 10 Number [Applause] five gives it up the middle He’s brought down right around the 20 yd line by number 21 And it’s now second and six They keep it on the ground with the tail back and he’s tackled right around the 14 yd line by Terrell [Applause] It’s first and 10 Throws it over the middle of the field Jones was his intended target Offense will line up this one at the 12 Here’s a pitch left side He’s dropped for a loss And you love to see those linebackers playing downhill like that Not just flowing sideline to sideline but attacking and trying to get in the back field Third down 11 yds for the first Short throw to the left Another catch on this drive He’s wrestled down around the three yd line by Freeman Well that’s an example of a very good play against pressure They were coming after him but the quick throw beat him And this one pretty much a chip shot about 20 yds out [Applause] It’s up and it’s good Watkins puts his team on the board first the home team gets ready to kick it away Meyers stands back to field the kick He’ll take it from the two He makes it back to the 25 Finley was there for the stop They couldn’t do anything against this defense on their last drive and they were forced to punt it away Now we have a first down and 10 to go Ball on their own 25 He loads up for the deep throw right through his hands He almost had the pick Number 80 was the intended receiver on the play And from their own 25 yd line under heavy pressure He’s tackled around the 42 yd line by Mack So The Rock sits at the 42 [Applause] has a man to his right and the pass falls incomplete Well you can’t just stare down one receiver on a play like that The defense is going to be all over it He was lucky he didn’t get picked off there So the Rock sits at the 42 Has a man short to his left He’s dropped down at about the 49 yd line by Kelly It’s a sevenyd gain with the pass The offense needs about three yardds to get the first here on third down [Applause] Looks left Here’s a short pass He’s brought down around the 48 yd line by Watson First down First down and 10 Ball on the 48 yd line [Applause] Wallace gets it on the counter Stiff arms and he’s brought down It’s a first down on the 10 yd gain Second down and very short yardage here Wallace on the run and he’s tackled around the 37 yd line by number 90 First down 10 to go The Pigkin is on the 37 yd line [Applause] Wallace gets another handoff Yeah the offensive line did their job They created enough of a seam to get him up into the secondary and then he was able to explode from there And we’ll have a first down and 10 [Applause] Short throw to the right That’ll make it second down with 10 to go at the 25 Dumps it out left He’s wrestled down around the 12 yd line by Joseph first and 10 [Applause] and he’ll lose yardage on the play Still a lot of time left but at the end of one the score is three to nothing Second down now 12 to go And he’s crushed as he lets it go He’s tackled at about the 5 yd line by Jackson If you’re going to play man-to-man coverage against this team you’re going to have to take away that slant route That time they hit it for a big play Just five yds away from a touchdown Now this one might have been a false start on the offense Let’s get the call Lot of pressure on those third down situations A defender trying to make a good play Gets a little overly aggressive And now it’s first down [Applause] Passes out to his right Meyers was the intended receiver And the field goal unit out to try this 27 y The kick is good Taylor will be kicking off Number 11 is deep looking to return the kickoff It’s fielded at the two He gets out to about the 25 yd line Mosley was there to bring him down Now we have a first down and 10 to go Ball on their own 25 Short pass to his left Freeman was his intended target [Applause] They’ll face second down and 10 passes short right side He’s dropped down around the 39 yd line by number 55 from their own 39 yd line feeds it to the back Did you see how fast that linebacker was on that one not only did he recognize it but when he did recognize it he had the explosiveness to get there They’re looking now at second and 11 Ball on their own 38 flips it out short to his left He’s brought down right around the 48 yd line by number 55 [Applause] First down and 10 [Applause] number five with the draw play He doesn’t get back to the line One of the tough things about trying to get a quarterback blocked is how athletic those guys are If you’re a fullback or an offensive lineman or somebody out in front trying to make that block it’s just tough to get a hand on those guys They’re quick from their own 49 yd line He’s searching for a receiver And he’s tackled around the 45 yd line by number 55 Pass play gives them a gain of six Facing third down now and seven Ball on the 45 yd line Here’s a halfback Hey and as a defense if you want to run the ball in that situation go ahead come up make the tackle you can go off and pout in the corner We’ll go back and celebrate with a little glass of water They’ll call on the field goal unit here He splits the uprights He just showed off his incredible leg strength there What a kick Wow Can you believe he made that one that’s my expert analysis there Wow The home team is just about ready to kick this one away Meyers is back to receive the kick and he’ll return it from way back at the three He makes it to the 23 yd line Number 11 was there for the stop They’ll get the ball here at the 23 First down 10 to go [Applause] It’s the tailback He’s wrestled down at about the 25 yd line by Mack It’s a second and eight situation now Wallace takes it up the middle He didn’t get back to the line And if you can make a running back hesitate just a little that time you could see there really was no hole and the running back was just fishing for a place to go That brings up third and 10 [Applause] looking for a big gain down the middle He’s tackled at about the 45 yd line by Joseph And we’ll have a first down and 10 Ball on their own 45 Wallace takes the give He’s dropped down around the 41 yd line by Coleman Nothing makes a defensive coordinator cringe more than seeing that kind of run because then it sets up the play action and there’s almost no way to stop an offense if you can’t stop the run and you have to deal with play action It’s first and 10 Daylight There he goes Spritter speed He’s knocked out of bounds at the three yd line Pretty impressive stuff As a back you have to just keep slamming it in there believing that hole is going to be there eventually That time it was and he took advantage and the big gain on the ground will set the offense up with first down and goal dumps it out right He’s got it Touchdown Just a great route that time No way that he wasn’t going to catch that football and score with that one That was beautiful Taylor adds the extra point Pittsburgh is up by four Taylor Yeah it’s ready to kick it away Number 11 stands back to field the kick Taken from the three yd line and the tackle was made by Mosley The offense will start at the 17 yd line Now we have a first down and 10 to go Looks right throws He picks it off He’s brought down around the 31 yd line by Fletcher First down and 10 Short throw to the left Tip pass and it’s incomplete Number 48 was the intended receiver on the play Second down and seven yds to go Here comes the Heat It’s a quarterback sack If a quarterback’s really good he can anticipate that corner blitz because he sees the coverage shift over to that side Obviously you can’t blitz a corner and leave the guy open without shifting the coverage That time the quarterback had no idea So they’re facing third and long following the sack finds a way to get rid of it as he’s hit Fourth down but the punt team is on the field looking to kick this one away And now their offense will come onto the field in great position to get back into this game They’ll start at the 20 First down 10 to go And he’s tackled around the 20 yd line by number 52 So they’ll face a second and 10 [Applause] Third down now 10 yds for the first Ball is on the 20 [Applause] He’s going to his right Throws He’s wrestled down at about 31 by number 55 And we’ll have a first down and 10 [Applause] throws it over the middle of the field He’s tackled right around the 44 yd line by number 56 and the defense gives up some free yards to the offense And Gus I always thought defensive penalties were so much more deflating than offensive penalties You know as an offense you get a chance to make up for it On defense though usually it’s big yardage and automatic first downs Heavy pressure and he’s brought down have mercy That’s what I’m frustrated with man Second down 15 yds for the first He takes off a sevenyd play And that brings up third down and eight yds to go They spot it on the 39 surveys the field steps up in the pocket They get to him in the pocket and bring him down for the sack I know It’s fourth and long now after the sack And they already have the lead This field position could set them up to put even more points on the board They’ll take over at the 20 yd line It’s first and 10 They’re going deep He’s dropped down right around the 32 yd line by Joseph Good gain through the air will set them up with another first down and 10 and looks left throws Second down now Following the incomplete pass They’ll face second down and 10 Ball on the 32 yd line Wallace on the run Well you know the safeties are going to attack the line of scrimmage against the run but you just don’t expect them to get there so soon that they’re going to make the tackle in the back field So it’s third down and they need 12 for the first They spot it on the 34 yd line Has a man to his right and it’ll be fourth down following the pass deflection Just terrific play by the defense They followed the quarterback’s eyes made a quick jump on the ball and were all over that one They call on the field goal unit looked like someone might have jumped I used to always think that offensive linemen should go to the line of scrimmage and hold up either one finger or two fingers and look down when they get confused And now this offense will set up with excellent field position with a chance to cut into this lead They’ll set up shop at the 20 Now we have a first down and 10 to go And it looked like someone on the offensive line jumped That penalty will move them back a bit Sloppy play right there The one thing you learn as an offensive player is you can’t give away yards They are just too hard to come by Brought down behind the line And when your defensive line can handle their guys up front and not allow the offensive lineman to get down on the linebackers it really gives those linebackers a chance to look great And as we head to halftime the score is 106 [Music] Sorry We’ll have to see how both teams respond as the second half kickoff is just seconds away Here we go He’ll return it from the four yd line He’s stopped at the 24 yd line Calhoun was there to bring him down They’ll start this drive at the 24 yd line First down and 10 Hand off to the right side He’s brought down around the 27 yd line by number 52 They’re looking now at second and eight Freeman on the inside Hand off might want to start thinking of a different approach as this running game has been ineffective So it’s third down The offense will need about four yardds to pick up the first has a man short to his left And you know the amazing thing about this guy we all talk about his arm strength but did you see how fluid that delivery was he didn’t even look like he was trying to throw it hard And so far in this one as you can see this player has been the impact performer of the game so far from their own 46 yd line And they’ll run him again And he’s tackled around the 42 yd line by number 21 First down 10 to go They spot it at the 42 They’ll give it off here Nice gain of about seven And two yards away here on second down Still looking for an open man Passes out to his right Deflected and broken up Number 11 was his intended target Third down now They’ll need a couple of yards to convert for a first down He’ll be brought down behind the line of scrimmage There are just some guys in this league that you have to run away from But the danger in that is you run away from him and he uses his speed to catch you from behind They’ll call on the field goal unit here [Applause] It’s up and it’s good He just showed off his incredible leg strength there What a kick Wow Can you believe he made that one that’s my expert analysis there Wow Watkins is ready to kick this one off Meyers is back to receive the kick He gets it back out to the 20 yd line Shocki was there for the stop The offense will take over at the 20 yd line and we’ll have a first down and 10 [Applause] Short pass to his left He does a good job to hang on to the ball Play goes for a loss of four As a quarterback sometimes you just have to see a play breaking down and get rid of the football and try it again on the next down It’s on their own 16 yd line Nelson with the give He’s wrestled down right around the 22 yd line by Mack That’ll bring up third down with eight yds to go Moves to his right dumps it out left makes the catch and he’s got nowhere to go Good defense all over the field that time They had the deep routes covered and when they tried to dump it off to the tight end they were on it From their own 23 yd line fields it cleanly but they’re right there to bring him down Man those guys were flying down the field He didn’t have a chance on that one His blockers got to do something for that poor guy out there or he’s going to get killed It’s first and 10 They’re on their own 35 Number five hands off and we have a flag on the play He’s tackled around the 43 yd line by Calhoun And I really didn’t see the hold there You’re starting to sound more like an offensive lineman every day Gus you know the reality is there really is holding on every single play but the rule changes now allow for guys to grab within the framework of the body You just can’t reach outside that framework And you love to see those linebackers playing downhill like that Not just flowing sideline to sideline but attacking and trying to get in the back field And from their own 25 yd line flips it out short to his left He’s dropped down around the 35 yd line by number 55 number 85 brings in his 40th catch of the season Here they have a third down and 10 to go Takes the snap and he’s in trouble Not much point in going for this one I expect to see him punt it away here We got to boys The sack brings up a fourth and very long situation Meyers fields it at the 29 Takes it back to around the 40 Shocki was there to bring him down Boy that was a close one for the coverage team They were able to wrap him up before he broke it open But he is on the brink This coverage team’s going to have to start playing with a little more intensity a little more heart or they’re going to give up a big one They get it out there on the toss Dropped behind the line Well you know you’ve got an aggressive safety when he’s making tackles for a loss behind the line of scrimmage Typically these guys are trying to not give up a big play in the passing game Now when you see somebody in the back field that’s impressive Second down and 14 Ball on their own 36 Passes short right side He’s brought down right around the 40 yd line by number 31 About four on that play It’s third down 10 yds for first Dumps it out right Makes the grab No signal yet We’ll see what they rule They rule it incomplete He took a stab at a great catch but that time just didn’t happen Number 11 will take it at the 21 That was really a good effort There wasn’t a ton of room for him to run but he was able to get up the field get a few yards You never get upset with a punt return guy like that It wasn’t spectacular but he got the job done Number five hands off on the delay Four yds on the carry brings up second down and six yds to go They spot it at their own 32 Makes the throw over the middle and he’s tackled around the 50 yd line by number 56 Now we have a first down and 10 to go Ball at midfield Freeman on the handoff He’s wrestled down right around the 48 yd line by Lewis Second down eight yds to go Ball on the 48 yd line Number five hands it off straight ahead Pick up a four Just about four yds shy of the first here on third down [Applause] Checks down to the short pass He’s tackled around the 34 yd line by number 55 First down and 10 Ball on their 34 [Applause] Hand off on the draw It’s a gain of four And it’s now second and six This one might have been a false start on the offense Let’s get the call Number 60 is guilty of moving early It’s second down and 11 to go [Applause] [Applause] They get to him in the pocket and bring him down for the sack So he goes down again And the defense is making their way into the back field and getting to the quarterback Chris what can he do here to turn this around well guess you know this guy can move He isn’t strictly a pocket passer so look for him to try to scramble out of the pocket and try to make something happen with his feet Plenty of work to do following the sack It’s third and 14 the snap Here comes the pressure Steps up and he’s quickly sacked And that’s the end of the quarter Our score in this one is 10 nine So after the sack it’s now fourth down and long Well their offense will now come onto the field in excellent position already leading in this game They’ll start at the 20 First down 10 to go [Applause] Wallace on the run He’s dropped down right around the 28 yd line by Applebee That’ll bring up second down A couple of yards needed to convert [Applause] Again he’ll get the call Yeah but not all sprinters turn into football players This guy is a guy with sprinter speed but is a football player He has the kind of toughness that you love to see and that speed that just dazzles And we’ll have a first down and 10 [Applause] Good coverage downfield Moves up in the pocket and down he goes now in a second and long following the sack [Applause] They’re going deep No completion that time and it’ll bring up third down Third down and long coming up here [Applause] He’s brought down at about the 35 yd line by Mack It’s fourth down The punt team is on the field looking to kick this one away Number 11 gets it at the 23 Brings this one back to the 37 Number 56 was there for the stop As they come back onto the field what are your thoughts on what they should do here to get back into this game it’s first and 10 Freeman takes the give Seems like the defensive pressure has him a little rattled out there Chris Yeah Gus certainly seems that way He’s been quick to tuck and run rather than sitting in the pocket and finding the open man No question about it But it’s got to be hard to be comfortable in that pocket when it keeps collapsing around him Second down and a long 12 They’re on their own 35 Freeman gets another hand off and he’s tackled around the 42 yd line by number 55 And third down five for the first It’s a quarterback sack It’s fourth down and the punt unit onto the field to kick it away [Applause] returns the punt from the 16 The stop was made by Buchanan You know I like that return Nothing flashy but it was really effective The thing I hate to see are guys that are dancing around back there trying to be a playmaker when they’re really not At least he got up the field got a few yards That’s what I like to see Nelson will hand it off spin move and he’s brought down I know it may not be the popular thing to say but I can’t really give the running back 100% of the credit for this performance today Let’s face it this defense came in here determined to stop the pass and they’re paying a price on the run We’ve got second and nine yardds to go Ball on their own 24 short throw to the left And I’m sure from the tight end’s version of the facts he was just simply too fast on that play The ball couldn’t catch up to him from their own 24 yd line looks to the right He’s going for it all It’s almost picked off And that will be a three and out for the offense after that incompletion Well you’re going to have to gather the troops over on the sideline because whether it was poor play calling or poor execution they never got anything going that time fourth down Looks like they’ll kick it away here as the punt Number 11 will take it at the 35 And the tackle was made by number 59 And this could be a clip Here’s the call Jackson will be flagged on the play Now we have a first down and 10 to go Ball on their own 24 Has a man short to his left Anytime you give up that quick pressure like that very seldom are those passes completed That’ll make it second down with 10 to go He’s wrestled down right around the 24 yd line by number 99 That brings up third and 10 Ball on their own 24 has a man out to his right The pass falls incomplete Fletcher thought he had a secure catch And that’s so frustrating as a wide receiver You know you’re going to get hit on the play Just wrap it up make the catch and go to the ground So it’s fourth down Looks like they’re going to punt it away here Myers feels the ball at the 34 He’s definitely got some breakaway potential when he’s back there returning kicks If you give him just a little bit of room he could break it for a big one They’ll set up shop at the 48 yd line First down and 10 They’ll give it off here He didn’t get back to the line And you love to see those linebackers playing downhill like that Not just flowing sideline to sideline but attacking and trying to get in the back field So they’ll face a second and 10 He’ll get it again And that’s why you send all those guys to plug up the holes And that time there were no holes really And he was lucky to get anything on the play Third down Seven yds to go [Applause] has a man to his right I wish all our fans could see what’s happening down the field on all our television broadcast because so much of the game now is won and lost in the secondary First down 10 to go Ball on the 38 yd line [Applause] He’s going to his right Throws Is he going to score pretty athletic play for a big guy I tell you as a quarterback you see somebody make a play like that you want to come back again and again So a great opportunity for the offense here as the big pass play sets him up with first down and goal Wallace gets another carry This guy really has some special moves doesn’t he you can almost see the fear in the defensive players eyes when he comes up in one-on-one situations cuz they know they can’t get him on the ground Point after is good Pittsburgh is up eight Taylor will be kicking off Number 11 stands back to field the kick Here we go He’ll return it from the four yd line Palmer was there to bring him down They couldn’t do anything against this defense on their last drive and they were forced to punt it away The offense will start at the 18 yd line and we’ll have a first down and 10 Number five hands off Did you see how fast that linebacker was on that one not only did he recognize it but when he did recognize it he had the explosiveness to get there They’re looking now at second and 11 The ball is on their own 16 Going down the middle with it He’s tackled around the 21 yd line by number 21 Number 85 catches it for a gain of five And third down seven yds to go [Applause] dumps it out right He’s dropped down right around the 42 yd line by number 52 [Applause] It’s first and 10 Ball on their own 42 Number five hands it off straight ahead You know you can draw up any sort of protection scheme and blocking scheme that you want but ultimately this game comes down to one big man against another big man And that time the defense’s big men they won the battle Facing a second and 13 situation here Ball on their own 39 [Applause] He goes down Sack And they will speed things up a bit by going no huddle He’s searching for a receiver He drops the easy pick and the pass will fall incomplete Fourth down coming up Well at the end of the game you go back and you basically say what happened on third down and you have a pretty good indication of how that game came out Good play by the defense Fourth down They’ll line up to punt this one away [Applause] and he takes it at the 12 He gets out to about the 22 yd line Buchanan was there for the stop He did a good job there finding a seam and getting up the field You know a lot of people don’t realize that being a punt returner or a kick returner is one of the toughest jobs in the NFL There’s a whole lot of things that could go wrong and only a few that can really go right Wallace takes it right side Heat Heat They’re looking now at second and eight Ball on their own 23 Wallace gets the call One of the tough things about trying to get a quarterback blocked is how athletic those guys are If you’re a fullback or an offensive lineman or somebody out in front trying to make that block it’s just tough to get a hand on those guys They’re quick They’re looking at third and nine Wallace again That was a big stop there Now they’re going to have to punt the football away I know there’s not a ton of time left on the clock but plenty of time to get his team right back down the field It’s fourth down The punt team is on the field looking to kick this one away Number 11 fields the ball at the 30 So Chris what does this offense have to do to get him back into this game the stop was made by number 29 They’ll get the ball here at the 32 yd line Now we have a first down and 10 to go Looking to his left he’s going deep Leaps It’s caught Wow The quarterback is having some success with this matchup What do you see here Chris well after a big game like that the quarterback may try to target this guy for really the rest of the game It’ll be interesting to see how this matchup progresses now that he’s found a bit of an opening It is an incomplete pass Fletcher was his intended target They line up at the 18 passes short right side Third down coming up after that incomplete pass passing situation for the offense here on third down and long Short throw to the right He can’t come up with it Incomplete pass And it appears that the coach will keep his offense out there [Applause] steps and throws to the left side comes down with it Touchdown And they’re now a two-point conversion away from tying this ball game up And let’s see if they try to get the quarterback to roll out Get a two-way option One pass going on the edge The pressure really on the defense here Big big conversion right here Time is running out and they need this to tie it up Can’t get the two-point conversion Great stop by the defense stopping that run More often than not when you’re trying to run the ball for a two-point conversion you think that you’re catching them offguard That time the defense was set to stop it and they did a nice job of it Well there’s really no chance for them to win this game unless they recover this onside kick Low line drive kick It’s not going very far He’s brought down around the 46 yd line by Buchanan I got to say Chris he is looking locked and loaded now after looking a little rattled earlier in the game Yeah and I think the difference is that he’s getting some time in the pocket time to sit back make his reads find the open man He certainly is dialed in now He takes a knee They’ve got a second and 12 here And he’ll just kneel it here [Music] [Applause] That’s going to wrap up the action Highlights are straight ahead And let’s take a look at the Gatorade performer of the game [Music] Still winter
