these in the drawing room And you really What was the last draft flatter you went to i went I went in 2023 Okay So the the Wembi lottery I was you know you you you have to show up on time You can’t be late or you get locked out of the room You they take all your I know I have two phones They took them both Yeah Threw them in the in the big envelope That was your perfect opportunity to tell them I’m a one phone guy Somehow they just know man It’s the NBA They know Bobby Carella what’s going on man happy draft lottery night to you Uh I feel really prepared I’m up to speed with all the rules of ping pong I know like the what’s a fault and how to serve and everything So I’m I’m I’m pretty pretty ready to rock and roll Oh he knows how to serve baby Oh that’s right You will find out tonight there as well Let us know where your feelings are tonight as we move closer to the NBA draft ladder Let’s set up tonight for you here as as far as the NBA draft ladder is concerned In Chicago Illinois the Dallas Mavericks currently hold the 11th pick going into the draft lottery We will find out if they stay there Their odds of keeping the number one or excuse me the number 11 I don’t know 40 and slip there The number 11 pick are 77.6% in terms of keeping that draft Of course we know historically in the 45ear history of the Dallas Mavericks they have never moved up in the NBA draft Could that potentially change tonight where presumably whoever wins the number one overall pick will be taking Duke sensation Cooper flag as the team wins the lottery be capturing the flag But for the Dallas Mavericks there are plenty of entries Maybe well maybe presumably the presumptive number one overall pick uh is Cooper Flag I think the number one pick will be used on Cooper Flag Question is would the team capturing the number one pick be capturing the flag yes they’re not going to trade Cooper flag I’m just I’m just keeping open possibilities Not only does he know the order of the lottery but he knows the order of the whole draft That’s right Mark Who’s winning the title next year i don’t know who’s winning the title this year There’s no there’s not even there’s not even a road teams are 10 and four in the second round of these playoffs There there there is no favorite But as Kevin point the M this is the Mavs have been to the this is the 17th trip to the lottery for the Dallas Mavericks Nine previous times they stayed right where they were projected to be Seven of the previous 16 trips they tumbled lower than they were supposed to be So is this the day is this the day Bobby Carll illustrator that the Matt they’re going there i’m feeling great I don’t know you’re point I didn’t know what you’re pointing to in my No I just had a vision Is the DLS QR code on the screen or like I just I just had a vision almost like a prophecy I see 12th Oh wow So you see them moving down Wow Okay Um by the way he jumps up Yes I don’t know I I haven’t gotten that far yet We’ll let you figure that out Uh there is some also other intrigue as well as as far as the Maverick outside of the Mavericks as far as a number 11 pick is concerned if they do stay there or move up uh other teams the Jazz the Hornets and the Wizards have the best odds of getting the number one overall pick this year Uh if you’re the Philadelphia 76ers you are praying that your pick somehow gets into the top six because if it doesn’t that pick will go to the Oklahoma City Thunder The Rockets already own the Suns pick going into tonight So the Suns can’t even dream Mark Stein of Cooper Flag potentially becoming part of their roster So it’ll be interesting to see where the Rockets go uh as far as the NBA draft lottery is concerned outside of the Mavericks gentlemen is there anything else that intrigues you about what could potentially happen uh in tonight’s well I don’t I don’t want to can I can I set the stage with with like just the the absolute biggest story that that here in 11 minutes uh is going to be dashed and 1.7 is going to turn out to be 1.7 But it is really funny to imagine Dallas the number one pick Is that’s pretty funny to me By the way the Mavs are at a robust 1.8 or 1.8 1.7 is Portland You slided them.1% I slid them 0.1 1.8 Uh team minutes left to imagine the idea And I just want to I I want to play a little game theory If Dallas got the number one pick I think it might be the first time in NBA history where the general managers the general manager of that team the chances they’re not employed actually goes up slightly Uh basically and again we’re just playing some hypotheticals We’re playing some game theory Um Dallas doesn’t really have an offramp Like I like every we’ve talked a lot about the fact that all signs all likelihood especially now point to Nico Harrison’s uh you know staying with Dallas that Patrick Deont is going to stick with him And that’s our understanding That’s that’s especially our understanding at this point Uh a big reason why is that there’s no off-ramp for Dallas There’s no way There’s almost no way that they could get rid of all their players fast enough and effectively enough to be bad enough to get a top pick next year and to have also enough draft picks to go into a rebuilding phase Uh that you know would need more than a year to accomplish and past uh you know next season they’ve only got one season left uh you know where they have total control of their draft pick Cooper flag would change that Cooper change flag would change that significantly and all of a sudden you’re Patrick Dumont who is dead set on at least letting this run out You would have to at least look at that and think what if what if this was the team’s chance to rebuild around a star a superstar that’s ready to go um you know based off our reporting others reporting there’s at least some understanding that Patrick Dean is looking at the situation and you know just just man just doesn’t love exactly how everything has gone Is a little bit more invested in in trying to at least keep an eye on things We don’t know exactly We don’t know perfectly but it it’s at least an offramp Now you’re Nico Harrison Don’t you think you if you have any sense that that’s going to be the case don’t you think that he might know that don’t you think that if you’re Nico Harrison in the scenario where Dallas Winston won’t pick and there’s any inkling at all that Patrick Deont would at least think about the team’s future wouldn’t you Nico Harrison be thinking right away about how could you trade that number one pick how how could how could a a a trade be orchestrated where Patrick Deont looks at it and he’s like “Oh you’re going to go get Kevin Durant and the team otherwise remains the same or you’re going to go get Giannis somehow and you’re going to add it Oh I’m back in just some game theory Just some just some Game of Thrones stuff that again now here in about 8 minutes 7 minutes is going to be dashed to pieces Dallas is not going to win the first overall pick Uh the scenarios where you know all the scenarios are are you know it’s slim scenarios that Dallas wouldn’t just draft Cooper It’s slim scenarios much slimmer scenarios that uh you know Dallas would even get the pick Slim scenarios that Patrick Deman at this point is is interested in making any sort of change to the front office But man it’s kind of fun to pingpong balls were being tossed about to determine where the NBA draft lottery picks will be Uh Bobby your thoughts uh as we are just minutes away from the reveal of the NBA draft lottery uh I mean it’s big obviously you know if they if the Mavs win the lottery or if they move up to two then it’s a pretty easy choice If they move up at all then they have a lot more to play with than you know you would expect Um there’s obviously Cooper Flag is going number one Dylan Harper’s going number two There’s a little bit of debate conversation around who could go three or four And normally um if you have five candidates to be picked third then you really have no candidates to be picked third and that pick all of a sudden isn’t as valuable as it might otherwise could be in a year where the the draft is deeper or more topheavy at least If the Mavs stay at 11 or move down to 12 or god forbid even like 13 or 14 or whatever um that pick is not super valuable to be traded And so I I would say if they stay at 11 unless you know that you’re dealing Daniel Gaffford in the 11th pick for a vet or something you’re probably sticking around and picking a guy Um if they move up but not to one or two I think that’s where it gets like all right they’re they’re they’re going to try and do something I was going to actually say this as well I agree with you I do think the pick is likelier to be traded if Dallas moves up and and agree I fully agree I think it’s much likelier if they move up to two to three four really three or four than um than if they just stay or or fall down to 12 I think if it’s 11th or 12th I feel as confident as you can be Not not not sourced or reported but like I feel pretty confident saying that I I think they’re going to use that pick Uh if it moves that’s where we get Dumont with a real decision to make when it comes to now owning the number one overall There is no decision Well there is no decision You got to do you got to take him you I I agree I agree You take Cooper Flag with the number one overall pick The question is what timelines now because again there’s so much to get into Uh there are alternate timelines now You’ve got a 33y old in terms of Kyrie Irving coming off of a torn ACL You’ve got a a 32-year-old and Anthony Davis uh who missed six weeks with an adductor strain was able to come back Obviously you have a 35-year-old Klay Thompson uh going into yet another his second season uh with the Dallas Mavericks as well There are a number of possibilities now Tim Ko to start off with I mean infinite infinite possibilities Uh Cooper Flag is amazing He is the you know one of the best one of the best draft prospects we’ve seen in a long time Uh he’s not a shot creator If you think about what he does so well it’s really a combination of PJ Washington and Anthony Davis Um you know he he takes a lot of what Anthony Davis does really well He takes a lot of what uh PJ Washington does really well Dallas has players at both positions Um if they draft if you put Cooper Flags flag on the roster that exists right now I promise you he will be awesome They will make it work Everything will be okay But it’s not like the ideal fit And once again if that happens Dallas is still missing Gary Irvy for half the season It’s a really weird situation to be in where absolutely the best thing you can do as a franchise is just to go draft a guy who fits who’s the best player in the draft Let me make it very clear that is the right option It’s the best scenario but there are so many outcomes that are stemming from this You still have to find a way to make sure you get a somebody to make up for Kyrie Irving who’s gonna be missing half the season this You know one thing Cooper Flag is not and certainly will not be as a rookie is a primary shot creator He’s not quite there yet That is going to take some time There’s questions about whether he’s ever going to be a number one option He’s the best player in the draft one of the best players we’ve seen in a minute I’m just trying to imagine him and his fit on Dallas which has a timeline that they enforced themselves Nico Harrison by trading away the 25-year-old and building around two 30-year-olds they have to win now Now Cooper Fly gives you a very long runway that when those players start to age out you at least have somebody you can start to build around but you don’t have the picks You don’t traditionally have that runway you’re not going to be bad next season Cooper Flag is going to make sure that you’re in the playoffs Um even if there’s still a lot to do around the edges a lot to do around the margins There’s a scenario where San Antonio who desperately wants uh Cooper Flag desperately would have loved to win the number one overall pick where you start talking to them What if you traded down one you got the other player in the draft who is in his own tier not in Cooper’s tier but he’s a tier below That’s Dylan Harper Is there a scenario there where you talk to San Antonio and you get quite a bit back from them you start to build back In fact San Antonio they have one of your draft picks They have one of your pick swaps in 2030 Do you talk to them you maybe get that pick swap back All of a sudden 2027 to 2030 which looked real bad still looks really bad Even if Cooper Flag comes to Dallas does not look as bad You talk about maybe we get that pick swap back Maybe we move down Dylan Harper all of a sudden is a Maverick Um and Dylan Harper a lead guard a lead creator uh joining a team that doesn’t just need to make up for Kyrie Irving’s absence really kind of needs another lead creator as well We’ve seen every team in the postseason has multiple you know high high level allstar or near all-star creators Pretty much every one of them has a player like that Does that make the team more appealing is that the route to go jiannis on de Kmpo The rumor mill the fires are burning uh in some way in a in a very unclear way but it sure does seem like we’re headed towards Aana summer Is that in play do you do you have enough that’s really the question I don’t know the number one pick Cooper Flag There may be teams that match or beat your offer to go trade for Giannis So that may be a non-starter but if you’re Dallas if you’ve committed to a core around 30 year olds 30 31y old Giannis you have to think about how could you not think about that how is that not in play how is that not a scenario that comes up if you’re Patrick Dumont who is committed to a future committed to running out these next few years with Nico Harrison in charge with Nico Harrison’s vision which we’ve talked a lot about a lot on this show We’ve talked about how in some ways the vision is the only path forward because you can’t get rid of you can’t trade away everybody You can’t completely remake the roster You can’t get bad enough quick enough to have a pick next season that you could rebuild with All of a sudden Cooper flag is there All you have to do is do nothing Move on from the general manager who your entire fan base is in revolt against You get a clean start and you also have Cooper flag which finally gives you a realistic path at rebuilding a actual possible future I like there are more pathways than this The easiest one the to me the smartest one in a lot of ways but even then there’s pathways surrounding it It’s just to take Cooper flag He’s the best player in the draft He’s one of the best prospects we’ve seen in quite a while I’m just telling you there are so many options There are so many paths There are so many different things different uh you know people who matter You know people who have opinions and who have ideas about how this is all going to go There are so many things that just changed dramatically based off 1.8 1.8 100% now like this is this is I’m I’m still trying to wrap my mind around everything that is like just how much just changes everything Yeah No it’s uh a number of possibilities have been opened up Uh occasion So uh give us the scouting report if you will on Cooper Flag a little bit I am here to just trash Tim Ko’s dreams Uh wow Uh I know you you’re you’re of the mindset that he’s you know he’s going to take a little bit of time to get you know those those clutch buckets and you know be able to score at a high enough clip I’m here to tell you that’s not going to take that long Uh he is by far the best player in the draft And watching him in person uh physically ready to go He’s not going to take a lot of time to develop in terms of his physicality He’s much bigger than he looks on TV uh physically just more powerful than just about every other college player in basketball as an 18-year-old which is incredible And he’s already started to implement some of the skill sets that you need the elite footwork that you need at the next level Watching him in person uh not only is he is he a great player but he’s a he’s a great teammate and playmaker overall And I think that’s what you need when you are going to be surrounded by if you don’t move other pieces Anthony Davis and then obviously Kyrie down the road if he decides to stay and if he and if he can recover uh to the point where you guys are going to need them to So I think you guys are in great shape to be honest with you It’s not I don’t I don’t look at Cougar Flag as part of a rebuild I think day one you guys will be ready to go and compete for a championship all over again We are just stunned Saul uh in a number of ways because as we detailed in Chronicle coming into it um the likelihood of this happening was obviously slim to none But as the pick started to go on um the realization that this could be happening became more and more real especially once we got uh into the top four and now here we are Um just another layer Uh who how did you react obviously as you were watching this unfortunately with the situation that Phoenix finds themselves in they were watching uh Hakee Luan up there representing the Rockets as they have their their pick But your thoughts on the overall draft lottery overall here Well listen I’m a company man Uh I’m not PHX anymore Uh I I do Arizona Wildcats basketball content and I do one show a week for the Suns right but uh listen when it came to Philly and Dallas I was like just one of you I don’t care who it is right you number one pick because we got to keep it in the family And so it is gonna stay in the family and this is tremendous I mean listen you guys first of all thank you Phoenix because we took DeAndre Aiden instead of Luca Donuch in the first place You guys got Luca and then has ever a franchise stumbled forward and found the lucky golden ticket all over again in a different candy bar I I just I’m I’m beside myself right now I can’t believe that that just happened You guys just let Luca go and you just got the best player of the draft and and a generational talent Uh no one on this set let Luca go Let’s be clear Yeah that is right It’s very true That’s very true True This is true This is true And when I say you guys I mean the Mavs Listen I I will say this in watching you got your guys’ show and watching the reaction obviously of the fan base Uh I there’s a part of me that was like man that is just that is just a terrible terrible scenario to be in And as a fan I would be distraught just like you guys were And so there’s a part of this that’s a little bit of you know hey this is good karma coming back Uh because you guys deserved it Now how long you guys hold on to that number one pick i know you guys don’t feel 100% confident that you guys will make it to the draft and keep on that pick uh just because of what just transpired a couple months ago but I’m really excited uh to see Cooper flag in in hopefully a Dallas Mavericks jersey just because he is a talent unlike any other I I when I you when you look at LeBron and his skill sets and where he started off like Cooper Flag is not far off from where LeBron was in terms of skill sets in terms of overall ability to facilitate to handle the ball get to the bucket shoot from the outside defensively Very impressive defensively Like he has all the tools you could ever want to become an elite superstar in the NBA And like I said I don’t think it’s going to take him very long Oh yeah And and look I think overwhelmingly the likeliest thing to happen the overwhelmingly uh overwhelmingly likeliest thing to happen Dallas is going to take Cooper flag I I do wonder if PJ Washington all of a sudden someone who uh was not exactly available going into the summer I I wouldn’t say based off what the team was was looking to build how they expected you know this vision to to play out That’s a player that now becomes a little bit more redundant a little bit more difficult just to find minutes for unless on the flip side you’re going away from always playing Anthony Davis uh you know at the four at least in the regular season There are so many pathways spinning out of this Uh but what you said is correct Cooper Flag is ready now He is awesome now He will fit into any situation any team He is you know just a a monster defender already Uh if you know if you want to talk about defense wins championships Cooper Flag plays the type of defense that wins championships there is no doubt about that Um and and there’s no doubt about his offensive skill set You know there’s doubts about what the ceiling is to that But nobody is worried about Cooper Flag the offensive player The only worry and again it’s not a worry There’s only questions that exist is is he a number one option or not you know but that’s that’s a good situation to be in when it comes to you know a number one pick you’re drafting uh you know best prospect in a draft He’s going to be one of the best defenders in the NBA and he’s going to be he might be one of the best offensive players in the NBA And if not he’s still going to be pretty damn good Uh he instantly makes Dallas better There’s no question about that I still you know as interesting as all these other options are I I think that’s the you know I don’t think anybody is saying I’m not saying that the likeliest outcome isn’t just that Dallas takes the best player in the draft Unless Unless it’s for Giannis there’s no discussion because the thing that you moved off of Luca for allegedly was because of his work ethic being out of shape you know his drive Like where was that all going right that was these were the question marks that were laid out by Nico Harrison moving on from Luca right cooper Flag is as far to the other extreme as you could possibly want to go a guy that is absolutely competitive to to no end He wants to put in the work and will put in the work and has put in the work Uh like he is he is determined to be one of the greats of all time Like so for the reasons why you would move on from Luca these are the reasons why you don’t trade Cooper Flag because of the all those things that you lined up And yeah maybe he’s not an elite scorer yet but I have no doubt that Cooper Flag will be that that individual that will put in every last second of work in the gym to try and make sure that he is as elite as he could possibly get Uh he very much is that kind of ilk And again if you’re if you’re a GM if you’re a team and you’re going through this interview process in the combine when you talking to college players you know over the course of the last 10 years like I have very rarely do you see and feel the competitiveness from these young athletes to the level of a Cooper flag uh that I have Like it just it’s just different Uh a lot of guys will say they’re competitive but like you see it on the court and you’re like “Okay it doesn’t really line up as much.” With Cooper Flag there is no doubt he wants to destroy everybody in his path And I think that’s a terrific you know asset to have Saul we appreciate the time and the perspective man for hopping on with us sports story in this year in this in this continent in this decade Uh you know outside of European soccer this there there was there was nothing there has been nothing as significant as the confusion the understanding the reporting the fallout everything that happened with the Luca trade And this is just another like this is not even as big as that but this is another this is a this this adds another thumb tag another you know banner another enormous shocking you know storyline another twist this is part of the Luca Dona trade narrative this is part of that same story line everything that happens from this lottery night to whatever decision Dallas makes Dallas ownership makes whatever goes into their future This is an extension This is a continuation of the biggest sports story you know in in recent memory And I don’t know where it goes from now but it’s unbelievable that it won’t die It won’t let go That this isn’t over Like it has it has a way of surprising and shocking and adding twist and turns that I certainly never expected you know okay sorry I 1.8% expected Uh but to actually be here and to actually see Dallas not just jump up into the top four which would have been surprising They never moved up ever in the draft ever Yeah And they go from never having moving up to literally hitting the biggest lottery ticket that they could ever hit ever It’s maybe maybe they they got the gambling owners and they won the odds You know the uh the the the casino’s always right Bobby I don’t know what deal with the devil uh this franchise has made but my gosh um at least for one night they have won the biggest ticket um in the lottery ever that they could possibly imagine Uh you obviously worked for the organization for a decade You have been through the highs and lows with this franchise in a number of different areas Um obviously on the outside looking in as far as being with the organization is concerned now Uh I’m very interested and curious in your thoughts on how we have gotten to this point and your just immediate reaction to how this has gone uh from where we were on February 1st to where we now are on where we were an hour ago Well I’m talking about obviously from an hour ago but I’m just talking about just the overall context of what has gone on since February 1st Yeah it’s awesome But I mean like it’s you know let’s not lose sight of a couple things One the Mavs were in the finals last year They were in the lottery this year So this this team took a enormous step backward and you know with the way the rules are in the league the way they’re set up teams that are really really bad have the best chance to get players like this Uh the Mavs had microscopic odds at getting one of these guys Dallas didn’t want to have these odds They wanted they tried to the very last game to make the playoffs They tried to make this an impossibility That was their stated goal Yeah I mean they were they were one complete no-show against the Grizzlies away from not having this chance Yeah And you know Mavs fans they finally have something to feel good about I mean this guy’s just unbelievable You know he averaged 19 points 7 and a half boards four and a half assists one and a half steals one and a half blocks 48 from the floor 38 from three 84 from the free throw line super efficient player highle competitor defensively versatile 68 69 depending on if he’s wearing shoes 200 lb built you know he’s not like a LeBron linebacker type but he’s also not a rail either And he’s only 19 He’s going to get bigger he’s going to get stronger he’s going to get better more skilled He’s explosive He’s fearless He’s a maniacal competitor He is literally like maybe a couple screws loose insane He’s yelling and competing and digging in at both ends of the floor And I mean like you know I’m not gonna say anything in defense of Nico Harrison but kind of like what Saul was alluding to before you know Nico clearly has and a lot of GMs have a vision uh for the kind of culture that they want to create right and culture in the NBA is always driven and led by your best players Now is Cooper Flag going to be the best player in the NBA one day maybe I don’t know Is he ever going to be the best player on the Mavs hopefully maybe not I don’t know but he’s going to be around here for a really long time and he’s going to be one of the main players on the Mavs a starter He’s going to be a guy that they turn to in big moments And so whenever he has that kind of attitude that no nonsense no BS play defense go hard for 40 minutes 48 minutes however long he’s out on the floor he’ll go 48 if you let him Like that kind of stuff uh is contagious you know and and that is an attitude around which the the Mavs can build a team Um I don’t know if it’s this version of the team That’s for the future And we have tomorrow and we have 2,000 more shows to talk about between now and when he his rookie contract expires Like he’s not going anywhere for a really long time But that is the kind of player that you can drop into an NBA floor today and he could play in a game today a high level game So if the Mavs want to compete for the playoffs if they want to rebuild if they want to do anything in between he fits the vision Um and and he can add to it And I think it’s just I mean he’s a he’s a very very good player Has the chance to be an incredible player Mark And like that is it’s just a a reality that we did not think was possible You’re right An hour ago Yeah I mean I am admittedly unprepared to even discuss this cuz like I I never I really didn’t think this was a chance These kinds of things don’t happen to us And even though I’ve been the one saying you know 1.8% is not that far away from 14% in the grand scheme of things And it actually that actually proved right But like I I just never envisioned this scenario and I’m just you know everyone’s going to be focused on Nico But like I’m think is Patrick Dumont the luckiest dude ever like I mean this is this is this is staggering to think that the Mavs have been handd delivered this opportunity to acquire a certifiable franchise player Better to be lucky than good Three months and change And look everyone’s going to say rigged Okay it was rigged They’re not unrigging it This is how this is This is happening You’re damn right This is Oh my gosh This is happening The fact that you said that the way that you said that on this platform is hilarious to me Oh my gosh I mean oh my gosh Like I I’ve been I I’ve been in that I’ve been in that rights to Ricky Sanchez just last week And in that podcast Daryl my said the number one pick in this draft might be the most valuable asset in the entire NBA A because of how good Cooper Flag projects to be but B because like you said it he’s going to be on a rookie contract for the next four years And when you are on a rookie contract it it changes everything I mean it’s like we talk about the Pacers and how good Nebard and Nmith are on their two contracts which add up to roughly 30 million a year For the next four years Cooper Flag is basically making a salary between those two guys So that’s what makes him priceless if he’s as good as everyone says and you can’t find a talent evaluator who doubts what he’s going to be able to be as an NBA player So I mean this this this literally changes it changes the complex it changes the whole complexion of where this of the purgatory that this franchise let’s not forget that this franchise put itself in Yes three months and change ago Yeah 13 13.8 million So that’s that’s cheaper than Daniel Gaffford Cooper Flag is going to be a better NBA player than Daniel Gaffford next season Cheaper than PJ It’s cheaper than PJ It is cheaper than PJ I’m not I can’t promise you Cooper Flag Defensively he will be a better player than PJ Washington next season Offensively I’m not sure We don’t know that yet We don’t know for sure Long-term no doubt in my mind But that also puts you in a very strange situation because you’re a number one pick that didn’t even want to be in the lottery and but now you won the first overall pick You have a very short timeline unless you don’t unless you’re now built who are you building around I think there’s two huge questions Who are you building around are you building around this window around Nico Harrison’s window are you building just for these next three years is that the choice um man because you can still draft Cooperines but it changes Are you doing two timelines uh are you trying to juggle everything at once it gets really hard to do two timelines Not only because of the obvious flaws with trying to do two timelines because you’re not going to have first round picks You’re not going to have an avenue to get first round picks You can even even make some moves around the edges because your roster is not complete with Cooper Flack You’re not done You still got to get those guards who can create Uh I think the other big question is can you go to Anthony Davins to tell him you’re playing center there’s no other way this team works There is no other way Now unfortunately now you can move on for Daniel Gaford You can play a little bit of PJ can come off the B You can if if your if your front court is Cooper flag Anthony Davis Derek Lively and PJ Washington and they play the bulk of the three the four and the five That should work But it’s gonna mean that Anthony Davis plays he has to play the five He plays a lot of five Still not for me either It’s not a lot of shooting It’s not a lot of shooting But that gives you a clear defined front line though Anthony Davis at the five Cooper Flag at your four You can interchange PJ Washington at three and four But it’d be better probably for him to come off the bench if he stays uh as a Dallas Maverick have him come off as your you know Yeah What what Cooper is as a as a spot-up shooter of NBA three-pointers or four Yeah I’m Well no I mean I’m I’m sorry I’m I’m saying Anthony Davis needs to be your five I would feel like in a lot But yeah I mean Anthony Davis needs to play more and more and more five Um even as draft Cooper that changes There’s a lot of ways that this makes sense to like I said finally rip out all the parts move on from the front office move on from the stars Uh now crucially this does not mean this would not mean you have to move on from someone like PJ Washington who’s 26 Now you have a window where you have a couple really young players You still have next year’s draft pick Um but you keep the role players around This isn’t a full tear down You’ve got the guy in the middle You don’t need the number one pick You got the number one pick That option is very available Do they have half the season if not more We laid all these We laid all this stuff out last week Things were getting pretty nihilistic Uh they’re without Kyrie for maybe all season And so you know but certainly most of it if not all of it And so the challenge is you know if you have AD if if you bring everybody back AD’s back Kyrie’s back Clay’s back Nico’s back Kit is back you’re still in a really weird situation fan-wise you’re in a really weird difficult situation tactics-wise because now all of a sudden you have this dude who’s the number one pick who’s going to be under pressure to perform but also team pressure to succeed fan pressure to succeed cuz you’re replacing Luca Let’s I mean Cooper Flag is a white dude Like there’s a lot of there’s a lot of stuff that is out of just you’re a good basketball player Like there’s a there’s a lot of Luca Cleer flag Dirk Like let’s not look past any of that That’s very important here Um fan expectation team expectation individual media expectation all of that stuff Uh and the future Hall of Famer that’s supposed to be serving you up looks is going to be out for most of the year And the other guy still has injury issues So there is no reason to believe just out of hand that if they bring this whole thing back that they will be a top six seed next year I agree You you still have to operate with my in my opinion you have to operate with the urgency of a team that has to improve in order to achieve your goal Yeah And your goal their goal is to win a title My goal is to make the top six and you have to do it now So you have to make some sort of move to win now If you accept that AD Kyrie and Cooper Flag and probably Clay are on the floor in a playoff game that means you have some options for who else you can trade in order to get better now And you can trade a 27 You You have a 29 you have a 31 So you have three picks that you can trade right or no just two 29 and 31 They’re on 27 Sorry my bad Uh you can swap those Yeah you can trade or the Lakers one whenever that is 29 Yeah And 31 you can trade those picks and you have some contracts that are pretty easy to match a variety of salaries I fully expect them even if they bring Nico back and bring everyone else back I expect them to make some big swings but we’ll see what exactly they are I I just want to put it out there I hope that they do not believe we’re good guys It’s all fixed Yeah No this is this fits all This is so complicated So much of this is very complicated Well because the thing is what I keep thinking about and you guys brought up the two timelines thing because on the one hand you have been given the keys to a full reset if you decide to go down that route whether it be cleaning out the front office getting in someone new to build around Cooper Flag moving forward here and if you’re wanting to move off of other players to put you in a better timeline moving forward But let’s walk down the road that we’ve been walking down since you know February 1st which is Nico Harrison believes that the window for him to win a championship is within the next two to three if you want to go even longer four years So if we’re operating under that premise does the number one pick give him that much more ammunition to decide if he wants to bring in a proven commodity that he knows can help him get that much closer to winning a championship because even with Cooper Flag being a part of this roster how quickly do you get to that stated goal of winning a championship if you’re Nico Harrison and you’re going to be out of this job maybe in the next two to three years I don’t know if Cooper Flag at this very moment gets it to his stated goal Now if you’re talking about the future that’s a longer runway that gives you the opportunity If Nico Harrison continues to run the team the way that he believes it needs to be ran given his own timeline he could this is just thinking out loud he could look at the number one pick and say “Oh that is the piece that I need to go get whatever I want to give me a championship as soon as maybe next year or the year after to be able to meet my stated goal.” That is why I think in a lot of ways this has become that much more intriguing because if you’re thinking about one timeline in terms of the future of the next 10 years you make this big recer flag and you figure out the rest as you go on If you’re Nico Harrison you’re thinking about winning a championship within the next two years he becomes a very valuable piece to potentially move to go get whatever superstar that you could particularly thinking about Giannis No for sure For sure And I think the Giannis part is interesting Uh Cooper help Cooper also helps you win now His I don’t think he gets you to a championship this year His fit next year His fit’s really interesting in Dallas specifically but Cooper helps you win now Cooper makes you a better team Cooper is that good Also uh Nico Harrison has a lot more scrutiny on him from Patrick Dumont than he did He doesn’t get a green light just to do Now I’m not saying you know if he came to Patrick man and said “Hey we’re gonna trade the number one pick for Giannis.” I don’t know And again I’m not sure Dallas would have the winning offer for Giannis They sure have a better one than they do but they’ve got they they they now have a Don’t do it Vital you know I don’t think you should do it I don’t think you should do it you’ve been given this ticket to have a tremendous player at the age of 19 now build you out a window for 10 years Like I I the more I think about it the the less likely I think Dallas could do anything but draft I think with Patrick Dumont who was very worried about the fan base at this point who was very aware of how the fan base is feeling doing anything other than draft the player that is overwhelmingly the number one pick Uh I think it would be very difficult for Patrick Deont to sign off on that based off what little admittedly I understand about what he’s feeling about this whole situation what he’s feeling about Nico Harrison but I can tell you Dr Jam is at least aware He’s very aware of how everything has been taken and then to go against the grain again to luck into 1.8 odds to get the number one overall pick and then to not take the player that every single team in the league wishes was on their team next season That would be lunacy That would just double down on everything I don’t even know if Patrick Dumont could get his wrap his head around trading it for Giannis That’s the only scenario Um yeah the more I think about this like Patrick Dumont there’s there’s no there’s no scenario where I I don’t think there’s any scenario where where Dallas does anything other than take Cooper flag number one It’s everything around the margins that is very interesting to me Everything about who will be making that pick Everything about how you are building the team in the coming years Um all of that stuff is would like to maybe have some future picks though to like add to your 18-year-old foundational piece They don’t have any except for next year Next year’s draft Interesting Uh let’s let’s revisit that one in March Now there now obviously this let’s revisit that tomorrow and the next day when the necessary moves to bolster your number one overall pick would need they can’t trade 26 they can’t do that cuz they that’s that’s what I’m saying if if you think that’s going to bolster grouper flag there are there’s a very clear direction you need to start thinking about you know we’re making the the Mavericks had never moved up at all in the NBA draft 17 times in the draft lottery had never moved up one spot Go from number 11 to number one with a 1.8% chance of doing it And now they have won the NBA draft lottery for the very first time Still a lot of questions to answer Who’s going to be making the pick what’s gonna happen between now and then we’re here every uh five days a week Yeah On YouTube Uh we’re at noon Yeah We’re going to be talking all about that tomorrow and every weekday thereafter until June 25th There is a whole hell of a lot to dive into That’s before we even get to
