FanDuel right now It’s a mailbag Monday Mailbag questions are available Uh the link is available at johncarales.combag johncarales.combag Hop in submit your questions I’m doing this every Monday unless something massive comes up but I’m going to have mailbag questions every week So let’s dive in to the questions We’re going to start number one with Jacobe D who says “How does this past weekend of NBA moves impact the Boston Celtics?” had two moves So this is going to be the whole first segment Uh two moves that uh impact the Boston Celtics Uh later on we’ll get to Kevin uh to uh what happens to Kevin Durant trade if he goes to Miami We’ll do that in the second segment We’ll do Jason Tatum and his future We’ll do that a little later on too But these moves from Orlando Orlando and Memphis made a big trade Uh Stephen Adams resigned with Houston So uh that that impacts the Celtics Let’s start with the trade here which is Desmond Bane to Orlando for Contavius Cwell Pope Cole Anthony and four unprotected first round picks and one pick swap So first of all instant reaction is they got four unprotected picks for Desmond Bane I like Desmond Bane as much as anybody Okay maybe not as much as Tom Westerholm but I do like Desmond Bane I think he’s a good player Four unprotected first round picks So the the picks that were sent were the number 16 pick in this draft 2026 first round pick uh 2028 and 2030 and then there’s a swap in 2029 that is top two protected So uh I’m I’m floored by this So right away my first reaction is well maybe Boston can get a first round pick for Drew Holiday If the the asking price for Desmond Bane is essentially five first round picks but four picks and a swap Four unprotected picks and a swap You’re telling me you can’t get a lottery protected first round pick for Drew Holiday like yeah So number one I I think that that set a price this summer Now teams can obviously come back to Boston and be like look Drew is not the player that Desmond Bane is right now and it’s not our fault that Orlando is in absolute go for it mode We’re not in that mode so we’re not going to give you that that hall And there’s nothing that says just because Orlando was willing to trade all of those picks that other teams have to trade all those picks You’re It kind of does set the market to some degree but you’re only going to get what teams are willing to give you So if if you walk into a car dealership and a car is $40,000 and somebody says “I’ll give you 65 for that.” The dealer can’t turn around to you and be like “Well that guy just gave us 65 for that car.” You be like “Yeah but that costs 40 and I’m not stupid like this person.” So if he wants to spend his money that’s fine I’m going to give you 40 for this car In fact I’m going to give you 30 because you just made so much money in that car you can afford to give a deal on this one So let’s you know let’s talk So just because one outlet entity has done a thing doesn’t mean other teams have to do that thing But I’m sure the Celtics will try to leverage that into a a first for Holiday I think the bigger impact uh for the Celtics is that Orlando becomes a little bit more dangerous of a team And we saw firsthand how dangerous Orlando can be in the playoffs that they they are a tougher team than they they were uh than their seating would indicate And if they have a whole year healthy they had they had some kind of tough injuries last year Obviously if they can spend the whole year healthy you got Ben Carro France Vagner Jaylen Suggs Desmond Bane That’s that’s really good That’s a really good team think Indiana’s uh ascent their run to the finals and briefly taking a lead in the finals that shows that if you put the right team together the right fit the right group of players you you can make a run And if you have a team that can shoot the ball but also defend you got yourself something that that’s sustainable there Now I don’t know how sustainable this is Uh they’re going to get super expensive super fast Now uh you know Desmond Bane makes what 30 30 some odd million dollars A lot of guys on that team are going to be making 30 something million Ben Carro is going to be in the final year of his deal uh this upcoming season and so the year after he’s going to be on his supermax contract Orlando is kind of going for it right now knowing that they could also make moves later But this is why Memphis was like “Yeah 28 2030 uh a a 29 pick swap that and Orlando hedged their bets a little bit there with that top two protected but Memphis knows what they’re doing a little bit here because they’re like 2028 it’s it’s only a couple years away but you’re going to have to you’re not going to be paying taxes and dipping into second aprons like the Celtics or some of the bigger markets teams you’re not going to be playing in that end of the pool for very long So calculated move there from Memphis But I do think you have to watch out for Orlando this upcoming season They are they’re going for it and they are going to make a case for themselves being in the top four So it does it does put some pressure on the Celtics because Tatum is out Uh the you got to hold down the fort but if Orlando is better if Indie continues to be good you still have Cleveland you still have whatever Milwaukeee is going to be you have teams Detroit’s getting better The East is wide open But the Celtics have to make sure they have enough and have the right fits because somebody’s got to come back in that Drew Holiday this presumed Drew Holiday trade You have to have the right combination of guys in Boston to hold things together And hopefully Jason Tatum will be able to come back and contribute and you can make a run at some point But it’s going to make things a little bit more difficult It doesn’t change what Brad Stevens is going to do You don’t look at Orlando getting Desmond Bay and go “Oh well that’s too much competition We got to pivot and start selling everything.” No but it does make you think like okay there’s for once we got talent going from the west to the east It’s Desmond Bane who is good all-star level player but still it’s Desmond Bane It’s not a mega star but it’s a star player You know he’s he’s a really good player That does change the dynamic in the East So congrats to Orlando for seeing an opportunity and going for it I think it’s an overpay but we’ll see I think I think the Celtics will be watching that Uh we’ll get to the second half of Jacob’s question here the Stephen Adams signing ressigning in Houston how does that impact the Celtics does that change who they can keep who they can get that’s all coming back coming up when we come back Today’s show is brought to you by Monarch Money monarchmoney.com Code lockdown NBA for half off your first year Thank you for making Lockdown Celtics your first listen every day I invite you to check out the lockdown NBA feed with two podcast lockown NBA game night right now covering the NBA finals in-depth previews of the next finals game Uh I will be there on Friday covering game six which may be the deciding game of the NBA finals So join me and Jake Madison on locked on NBA game night And of course Lockdown NBA is going to have everything covered including that big trade that I just talked about and the signing of Stephen Adams which is part two of Jacob’s question Stephen Adams signed a three-year deal worth $39 million approximately 13 $13 million a year Uh Keith Smith from Spotrak friend of the show says it’s a descending contract 14.1 year 1 uh 13 year 2 11.8 8 almost 11.9 year three fully guaranteed no options Stephen Adams uh getting the approximately $13 million a year Now what does that mean for the Celtics again we’re talking about setting a price What does that what price does that set for Luke Cornet when you look at free agent bigs some a lot of this is where are you going to spend your money and are you gonna go for Clint Capella are you going to go for uh Miles Turner Cavon Looney Paul Reed Nas Reed you know you got guys like bargains like Gershan Yabelli You got Julius Randall who may be on the market You got a vet like Brook Lopez So while Stephen Adams sets the market here at about 13 million for a big right around mid-level exception money full mid-level the question about Luke now becomes how much does a team want him over one of these other guys that I mentioned and you know decent players with some good value that you may consider to be better than Luke Cornett And if the if the the spots dry up then the money dries up And so what Luke Cornett can make just depends on where in that hierarchy are people going to spend the money Luke can be in a tough place you know he’s better than some of these names but some of these names aren’t like he’s not so much better that three four $5 million a year more is going to make a difference I would say maybe Yabusle uh in that role Precious Aula I don’t mean you know Larry Nance guys that guys that you go okay we can give them less money they can they can do a fine job we’re going to spend our money somewhere else This is where the big criticism of the mid-level money kind of going away in the NBA because of this collective bargaining agreement Watch Luke Cornet as a potential test test case because a lot of people are saying Luke’s going to get priced out of Boston but I wonder if Luke’s going to get priced out of this market And there is a potential here that a team will throw $10 million at him and Boston’s not going to pay him $10 million and you just you deal with it And maybe Boston pivots to one of the guys that I mentioned and you say “Okay we’re just going to have to do uh Precious Aula for less We’re going to have to get him and you’re going to let uh Luke go.” So there is a potential that okay Adams sets the market but there is also the potential that teams are going to go like skip over Luke There’s going to be a couple of guys that are going to get the money and then Luke’s going to be in that next tier and they’re going “Nope too expensive for what he’s getting.” And they’re going to dip down below and take some of those other cheaper guys off the market and Luke who is in line for a payday kind of gets screwed out of his his deal So there is I’m I’m watching that as much as I’m watching Luke kind of go into that next that next phase Uh let’s move on John L says “Miami is one of Kevin Durant’s preferred destinations What would that trade look like and should we worry that Miami is back if they get him?” So what would that trade look like well it I I’m going to assume that Tyler Herro has to be part of that that deal because he’s better than uh Duncan Robinson and the Suns are going to want something of value It’s got you can do Tyler Hero and Duncan Robinson and get that deal done If you do Tyler Hero and somebody else now we’re starting to get into to complicated kind of areas Trading away hero they’re not trading bam out of bio They’re not going to do that Kevin Durant is 36 years old He’s going to turn 37 before the um season starts So Miami is on his list places that he would stay longterm which means more than one year I don’t know what long-term is for him 37 he’s going to play till he’s 40 maybe Uh San Antonio’s on that list Houston’s on that list So Miami is not a definite here Also the the the teams on his preferred list aren’t necessarily going to be where Phoenix trades him because they have said we’re we’re going to do what’s best for us And so there’s possibilities of him going somewhere else not one of his preferred destinations Uh if that deal is better I don’t know that Miami can put together just Miami and Phoenix a deal that looks great but I don’t know what these other deals are going to look like Tyler Herrell I think has to be part of it I know Bamabio there’s no way he’s going to be part of it I don’t think they’re going to get away with Tyler and Duncan Robinson I think Phoenix is going to want one of the young players Uh maybe I don’t know Uh uh what’s his name one one of one of the young guys I just totally drew a blank on uh Yoic One he’s he’s a good young player for Miami Um and I’m stalling as I call up my roster because it’s just Haime Hakez that he he could be a name that that somebody wants So it it’s possible that it’s going to have to be one of the younger guys which makes the the money more complicated So I I just I’m going to bet that he doesn’t go to Miami but if he does what does that mean i I still I don’t think it makes Miami so incredibly better They have to do more It depends on who they give up but if you’re still going into it with Terry Rosier on the roster right like you’re not trading Terry Rosier might they might say you got to take Terry Rosier back but the combination of Terry Rosier and Tyler Herro is too much money for the Suns to take back Phoenix is a second apron team now They could probably do some other deals beforehand if they need to to get you know maybe maybe work something out and get under the Second Apron but I I don’t know They maybe they can’t And so that means they can’t aggregate players So you can’t do oh we’ll just do KD and somebody else and yeah we’ll take back you know Terry Rosier May maybe he you know is rejuvenated They can’t do that So can you pile up like Kyle Anderson and somebody else maybe but it’s complicated in Miami So the players that they’re giving up and this is not a great roster anyway You’re adding Kevin Durant to that roster That’s great You’re obviously making an upgrade there But you are taking away a lot of shot creation and Tellah’s 25 whereas you know uh Durant’s 11 12 years older than him So I still think like you Miami has like their their run of being dangerous but this doesn’t propel them any higher than they normally are Are they are they not a playin team in the East maybe maybe they climb to sixth but I still don’t I don’t fear them even with Kevin Durant there So I I’m I’m going to guess that doesn’t happen We’re going to come back Jason Tatum’s future his injury and then questions about uh a Porzingis trade Baylor Sherman all of that stuff coming up when I come back Today’s show is brought to you by FanDuel Hop on to FanDuel get into those NBA finals Stanley Cup finals uh baseball uh who would have bet on Raphael de getting traded but you can bet on things all kinds of things on FanDuel but you know if you’re betting on basketball before the tip off live whatever partner of the NBA Thanks for making Lockdown Celtics your first listen every day Uh how about checking out Jeez you can check out Lockdown Magic for their take on the on the trade Locked on Grizzlies for their take on the trade Locked on Rockets for the the signing of the Stephen Adams There’s a lot of a lot of reaction going on on the network for all of these things that have happened around the NBA Let’s get back into the mailbag here which is uh you submit your questions at johncarales.combag Uh a couple of questions combined into one Nathan asks “What’s Boston’s future if Tatum returns and it’s not the same player?” And Andrew says “Is it way too early to make realistic predictions?” Uh oh it is way too early but based on what you know about Tatum do you think there’s any risk of him rushing back and reinjuring himself so I obviously Tatum’s going to want to come back as soon as possible He’s going to have to trust his trainers which I know he does He’s going to have to trust the team the doctors all of that And I want to be clear because I’ve said this before but I want to be clear When I talk about him coming back and the potential for him coming back this upcoming season I’m in no way talking about rushing him back He should not rush back But people make this assumption that if he comes back earlier than you expect then he’s rushing back And people go “Well don’t rush back Don’t come back this season.” But if he’s ready to play in January let’s say and that’s eight months after the injury eight months after the surgery right that happened in May So you get June July August September October November December January mid January is 8 months after the surgery Again his youth his fitness the innovation of the procedure the speed at which it was done gets him back on his feet sooner It’s not out of the question that he comes back eight months Eight months is a long time That’s not rushing it back If that’s the case and when I say comes back and is ready to play that means cleared by the doctors cleared by the trainers everybody agrees he is 100% and there is no risk of reinjury the he it has healed it is ready to go and he can start playing basketball once that is said to Jason Tatum he can come back so I don’t think there’s a risk of him rushing back to be I can do it in January I’m ready They’re going to do all the MRIs all the tests They’re going to do all of the everything They are not This is not hey I want to play this back to back This is we’re going to do every bit of imaging we can We’re going to do every bit of testing that we can to see how how hard you can go what your recovery time is and when you can go again and they once he is fully recovered and can do all of that stuff then he’s ready to play NBA basketball He will be out there running he will be out there jumping he will be out there shooting he will look like he’s ready to go and he won’t be So if he returns and he’s not the same player that we’ve seen Nathan then the Celtics do have to make a decision and they may end up moving him and he might have to it might be a situation where he’s no longer a number one guy and he can’t handle being a number two guy in Boston So he’s going to have to start that phase of his career somewhere else and the Celtics have to do what they can to get good value for him That’s that’s the if So I would expect if he’s not his normal self Okay I guess the real question would be is he still capable of being a number one guy is he a number two guy have you found a number one guy and all of that i think if he’s not his normal self and he’s not a number one guy anymore the Celtics will have to move on But I I am optimistic about his recovery I’m optimistic that all of the things that I I lined up can be part of a sooner than expected recovery Again stressing with the knowledge that everybody’s going to have to agree that he is ready Every doctor every trainer every coach everyone in the front office everyone in Tatum’s family everybody’s going to have to agree Once you’re 100% and once your body has been reconditioned to NBA basketball you are ready to go If that’s January 1st it’s January 1st If it’s July 1st it’s July 1st of next year Whatever it is whatever it is once you’re 100% and reconditioned there’s no added benefit to sitting out There’s no added there’s no “Oh he might be ready but let’s just sit him anyway Why he’s ready He wants to play You pay him to play Let’s play him Let’s get him ready Get him into some NBA action.” Even if it’s just a slow super minutes restriction slow ramp up take advantage of it I think it’s a good thing If he’s ready in January great Because now you have actual NBA basketball that he can play him 15 minutes play him one stint in the first quarter one stint in the third quarter then slowly ramp him up see how he recovers give him a day off get him back You know what I’m saying let’s just take advantage of the opportunity that’s there Once you’re 100% you’re 100% No amount of sitting is going to make you more 100% There’s nowhere nowhere else for you to go Julio says “Uh I’ve been hearing all the trade rumors but uh why isn’t KP considered uh a candidate to leave?” Just saying that Julio is saying that he hasn’t seen a or Julio hasn’t seen the uh the the the real meaty Christophsing trade rumors and I think that’s because I I don’t I don’t know that he gets traded this year I really don’t I feel like I I’ve laid this out in the podcast before but the moves this summer this summer Drew Holiday trade Sam Hower trade wait and see Porzingis sniff around listen to deals but nothing nothing really on Porzingis until maybe the trade deadline Between start of the season and trade season in season you determine what’s the what’s the Jason Tatum prognosis Then from there you can pivot Do you want to just say “Okay we’re just gonna nope He’s not going to be ready this year at all It’s going to take him a full year to recover.” Fine If that’s the case then that’s the case Uh then you you adjust accordingly Maybe you do trade Porzingis and you say “Ah forget it.” Maybe you still keep them If you’re under the second apron you just say “Okay we’re done making moves We’re going to go with this team It’s going to go as far as it goes.” And be you be done with it And then next summer you adjust and you figure out what to do with Porzingis I still think that you resign him at mid-level money at I think that Steven Adams contract is going to be a good contract for Porzingis next year 13 to$15 million $15 million a year for Porzingis I think if you you’d tell him like if you can go get that money somewhere else go for it but we want to keep you here at $15 million and then he becomes a potential trade tip So I think why you’re not hearing Porzingis trade rumors is because I think the Celtics are holding off Paulo says “I’ve got some good vibes on Shyman I’m truly convinced that he will turn some heads next year Am I being too optimistic?” Turning heads i I would I wouldn’t say too optimistic You’re certainly being optimistic but I don’t say too optimistic he has the potential He’s an older player so he’s not your typical secondyear player I think him I think him making a jump because of the summer that he can have uh because of the confidence after the uh year that he had even in limited opportunities I think there’s there’s reason to be optimistic Will he turn heads maybe if they Boston’s confidence in him will be shown if Samhouser is moved into someone’s cap space exception slashmid level Uh so I think that Sherman has an opportunity to come in and be a Samhouser type at a much cheaper contract So uh we’ll see We’ll see But um I I think there’s reason to be optimistic I don’t want to go too crazy but there’s reason to be optimistic And final question this is like a little housekeeping question just for people who aren’t aware Chris asks was just curious if the coaching staff salaries count towards uh any of the salary cap or anything like that Nope just player salaries Coach you pay coach $100 million if you want Uh doesn’t matter So the it’s not about how much money the team the the ownership group spends on the team It’s all strictly players and their contracts their incentives all of that stuff Once again mailbag questions can go to johncarales.com johncorales.combag Join me I'm locked on First LFG !!!
Shitty day. Another Beantown legend (or was soon to be at least) that won’t retire in a Boston uni. Anyway I’ve always felt Bane was a bit overrated but the way the East is looking Orlando took a risk worth taking I guess. It certainly gives them another shooter/defender but they gave up a lot to get him. Dumping KCPs money was good though. He didn’t do much of anything last season. Thank you John and I hope all the dads out there had a great Father’s Day. ☘️🔒
First off …. NOT 4 picks for Bane !!! A couple picks were to take KCP shitty contract.
I wonder if they called about Jaylen
The Grizzliies robbed Orlando big time. Terrible move by Orlando. Luckily it doesn’t affect the Celtics. If anything it makes it easier for the Celtics.
Wow a rocky point t shirt.. you don’t see those everyday John

Bruins traded Marchand, Redsox Traded Devers, Celtics trade _____________. No need to get anxious, Brad will do what’s best for the team.
