The Desmond Bane Trade PROVES The Magic Don’t Get It…

i’ve been saying for a while now that this was going to be an action-packed off season filled with big moves and trades galore and while I kind of expected that excitement to get underway after the NBA finals were over the floodgates seem to have already opened up as the Orlando Magic and the Memphis Grizzlies just made a deal that shocked the basketball world as you probably guessed in today’s video we will be reviewing everything there is to know about this trade for both teams going through the rationale each side came into the deal with what this means for each group moving forward whether or not the trade makes sense and who benefits the most from it before we start though it turns out a good amount of you watching right now aren’t even subscribed to the channel so if you enjoy the content consider hitting the subscribe button as not only does it help out a ton but it also very much appreciate it now with that being said let’s begin to start things off let’s go over the full details of the trade in this deal the Memphis Grizzlies traded Desmond Bayon to the Orlando Magic in exchange for Contavius Caldwell Pope Cole Anthony four total firstround picks and a firstround pick swap there’s a lot to dive into here so we’ll review things one team at a time and first up let’s look at how the Orlando Magic came away here the Magic are still a pretty young team but their core has been built on the strength of their defense and now that they’ve made the playoffs in back-to-back seasons this was a pivotal off season for them to determine whether they’re serious about taking this group to the next level or not in each of the last two seasons the Magic have been a top three ranked defense with them finishing as the second best defense this season and third best defense last season on that end so by that alone they’re really close to forcing the league to take them serious as title contenders because being able to lock up the league’s best players night to night is obviously a recipe for success what is not a recipe for success though is simultaneously having the worst offense in the playoffs every year that is exactly what the Magic have dealt with in back-to-back seasons ranking 16th out of 16 playoff teams on offense this year and last year that’s probably really hard to believe if it’s the first time you’re hearing that information because when you look at how promising their young stars Paulo Beno and France Vagner are developing on offense you would think they have a good basis for offensive output but in the playoffs those two have way too much of the burden on their shoulders to carry the load and there just isn’t nearly enough of two main things around them the first of which is shooting as you guessed it the Magic were also ranked dead last season in team three-point shooting which brings us to this trade where the goal was pretty obvious to improve the team’s shooting contavius Caldwell Pope was the team’s big free agency signing last summer for this exact purpose but KCP unfortunately lost his shooting touch in Orlando going from being someone who made above 40% of his threes in Denver to just being a 34% shooter from three this season with the Magic desmond Bane meanwhile is not only a much better shooter making 41% of his threes for his career but on a much higher volume of attempts per game than KCP but he’s also been a much better scorer overall having put up 22 points per game two seasons ago 24 points per game last season and 19 points per game this season that’s very good news of course but there’s a reason that contributed to Contavius Caldwell Pope’s percentages dipping this year after being lights out the last two seasons that this trade still fails to address and it’s the second main thing that they’re missing from what I mentioned before being that the team has a severe lack of playmaking from the point guard position in order for a team’s shooters to actually produce in their roles they need to be set up for good looks on a regular basis of course Contavius Caldwell Pope is going to knock down 40% of his threes when Nicola Joic is drawing all of the attention from the defense and finding his shooters for wideopen looks as one of the best passers in the entire NBA the Magic have zero players that are even above average passers and it has crushed their offense consistently they play way too much iso ball expecting Paulo and Fron to create everything and neither are natural passers to begin with with this trade Desmond Bane will likely be thrust into a more prominent ball handling role just like he was when John Morant was out for extended stretches of time in Memphis and even though Bane’s individual numbers went up during those stretches his efficiency took a hit and the Grizzlies offense as a whole plummeted to dead last in the NBA because amongst many reasons Bane is just not a natural playmaker i’ve said it in videos before but the Magic are in desperate need of a point guard if they want to be taken serious about competing for titles because a natural playmaker initiating the offense would make life a whole lot easier not only for Paulo Benero and Fron Vagner as scorers but it would also have made the life of someone like Contavius Caldwell Pope as a shooter easier if the Magic had a little bit more patience and waited to see all of the potentially available players there are on the trade market this summer instead of rushing to open the floodgates getting the first deal of the summer done they may have seen someone like Darius Garland become available with the Cavaliers potentially looking to break up their two small guard backcourt garland’s shiftiness natural court vision and passing talent and his incredible skill as a shooter off the dribble would have given the Magic an element on offense that they have none of right now which is someone who can attack off the dribble collapse the defense and then kick it out to the open man regularly another player with a good chance of becoming available this summer based on reports and rumors is LaMelo Ball of the Charlotte Hornets who is one of the most creative offensive talents in the league bringing a level of playmaking that the Magic should have been salivating over and then of course Trey Young and the Atlanta Hawks have been treading dangerous waters the last few years and if Trey doesn’t sign a contract extension this summer he is yet another incredibly crafty point guard who can single-handedly elevate an offense and the Magic are equipped with elite defenders to overcome his shortcomings on defense too instead they took the lazy way out trading for another shooter without addressing the fact that they have no one to set him up for shots and on top of all of that they probably overpaid for him kcp and Cole Anthony may not turn heads but four firstround picks and a pick swap added on to them in the offer sure made the Grizzlies decision a lot easier bane probably won’t be an all-star in his career and just got traded for an all-star caliber package and while I do think the Magic will improve as a shooting team next season with him it’s mostly because they literally can’t get any worse than dead last like they were this year now over to the Memphis Grizzlies side of things it may not be easy saying goodbye to a player that you developed from being the 30th pick in the draft to being a borderline star in the NBA but the NBA is a business and it’s hard to complain about the return that they just got for Bane after a season where they fizzled out at the end of the season and got swept in the first round of the playoffs as the eight seed the Grizzlies are feeling the pressure to getting back on track towards contention as was made clear when they fired head coach Taylor Jenkins during the regular season and with Jiren Jackson Jr due for a max contract extension this summer they probably didn’t want to have all of their money tied up in their three best players moving off of Desmond Bane’s max contract for two more years of Contavius Caldwell Pope for half the price along with Cole Anthony playing for his next contract off the bench with just one year left on his contract gives the Grizzlies more leeway for the future then when you factor in the four first round picks they just brought in they can now consistently add contributors on costcontrolled rookie contracts year after year as they move forward as well i’m seeing a lot of analysts and media outlets speculate that this trade insinuates that the Grizzlies are starting to blow things up and that they may explore trading both Jarant and Jiren Jackson Jr too but I just could not disagree more with that they’re going to give new head coach to Isalo a full season in charge to implement his system and see if they can yield better results than Taylor Jenkins before they blow things up completely and even with this deal being what it is I very much see it as a retooling more than a re-evaluating of everything contavius Caldwell Pope is an NBA champion two-way wing who shouldn’t be written off just because of one down year on a roster with zero playmakers freeing John Morant after his role felt a bit restricted for most of this season is a good way to get the Grizzlies back into the mix at the top the development of players like Scottie Pippen Jr Zack Edy and Jaylen Wells is exciting and the influx of draft picks they just got allows them to make even more moves this summer too all in all I’ll say this i understand the logic behind why the Orlando Magic did this but I just think the logic is flawed and is missing the point regarding their big picture their offense won’t take off until they bring in some playmakers into their backcourt the Grizzlies are taking full advantage of a generous offer sent their way that opens up flexibility and adds depth and overall I like how they came away from this trade a lot more than Orlando and with that being said that’s all I have for you today make sure to like the video subscribe to the channel and comment down below what you think about this trade overall thanks for watching 1. Those draft picks they traded for bane could’ve been traded for ja morant or Trae young smh magic are a terrible organization

  2. So it’s a bad move because it doesn’t address all needs at once? Bad take imo. Great trade for Magic. Bad contract from KCP who was a non factor on offense. Bane is an undeniable upgrade. They can find someone a la KPJr to fill in the playmaking gaps. And Black may still have room to grow

  3. Magic still have other assets. Jett and Ant Black and 2032 1st for Coby White should get the deal done. Also could trade Suggs plus that 2032 pick and break up his contract into multiple guys

  4. I don't think you understand how bad Cole and KCP actually are. And how bad the picks are gonna be outside of this years and the Phoenix pick which will maybe land in the lottery. At the end of the day value the Magic got for Bane is gonna end up being two firsts. And they still have loads of tradeable contracts

  5. the orlando magic handled the pacers this season with pope and anthony where the pacers at, the finals, your welcome

  6. Nikola Jokic convincing the world that Bruce Brown and KCP were more than average players was the greatest trick the devil ever played.

I look forward to some team wildly overpaying Christian Braun in the future.

  7. Assuming they rushed into a deal because other guys could be available poor logic. I am sure (since they've had this issue for multiple years) that they've explored all those opportunities for upgrades at PG and didn't see them as attainable. Criticizing them when they operating on GM convos and you are using rumors as a source is silly. And I am a Memphis fan

  8. Bro i dont think you get it. If you watch whole games you'd see kcp left open with nobody around and dude still klanks it to the left. This was transition, drive and kick, off curls, and anything kcp did to get open. The best pg in the league cant fix and shot thats off

  9. I get that this wasn't the best case scenario, but Cleveland wasn't gonna trade garland to Orlando as they are a direct competitor and always match up with them in the playoffs and Im sure they called for trae and maybe lamelo and they weren't willing to give them up. I think this was the best they could've done this summer

  10. F is a horrible evaluation for the magic. Considering Paolo, Franz, Suggs and Bane will all be under contract for (almost) every year of their own picks traded. These magic picks just won’t be valuable. That suns pick could be incredibly valuable but that depends on how the lottery plays out next year.

YES this is an overpay, NO this is not an F trade

  11. Ultimate litmus test of “do you watch nba games”. Everyone thinking the grizzlies fleeced also think angel reese is a wnba star 😂

  12. No you don’t get it…. It’s a great trade for Orlando. Coming from a Heat fan you’re not realizing that they gave up NONE of their core .
They still have Suggs banchero and Wagner now adding babe to that give you three scorers over 20 PPG and iso scoring threats
Oh and as a bonus babe averaged 5+ assists last year he can play make too.

Those picks they gave up ok think about it this way the magic already have 8 solid players under 28

    Suggs
    Wagner
    Banchero
    Bane
    Black
    Da Silva
    Carter
    Bitzade / Mo Wagner

You cannot establish 17 young players at once. Look at OKC during the finals that DEPTH is still only playing 7-8 guys rotation minutes. YOU NEED SOLID PLAYERS TO WIN. Bane is proven and he’s YOUNG, and under team control he’s better than what you MIGHT get in a draft and then have to wait to blossom.

Like bro can you imagine nothing black or Tristan da Silva playing in the ECF or finals now NOOOOO. they’d shorten that rotation maybe black plays like 8-14 minutes but you’re mainly going to see Suggs bane Wagner banchero carter Bitzade and cojo

You NEED bane To raise your ceiling

  13. Of course they had to give alot picks they essentially traded two veteran minimum players (making 44 mil together) for a two way guy who avg 20ppg 5ast 39%3pt. The only thing grizz got out if it was picks lol and most of them will be late first rounderd

  14. you are wrong with this take Jalen Suggs is the heart and soul of that team. He was a star quarterback, so he has the leadership skills to lead this group of young guys. Bane is an excellent acquisition. He will be absolutely deadly as the third option behind Wagner and Banchero.

  15. Just say you didn't watch a magic game this year. KCP and Cole Anthony are way worse than you think they are. LaMelo is injury prone and a selfish player. Trae I guess, but Atlanta probably said no.

  16. Bad take because they only traded this year 16th and 2 late first rounders in 28 n 29. The other 4th first round pick is not even a real pick as Magic only owned 1/4 of it.

  17. I don’t think the trade was bad for the Magic, I think a guy like Bane was exactly what they needed to bolster their offense. I do, however, think the Magic overpaid for him.
