moved around and things like that Um but it happened and it went to the Orlando Magic um in a package that was different from what we heard they could have been offering for Kobe White They get four unprotected first round picks Three of those first round picks are not going to be lottery picks One is the Phoenix picks next year which could be a pretty decent pick and get them a shot to move up in the lottery depending on what Phoenix does with a KD trade or whatnot But a how you feel about the deal and b do you think this reflects anything in regards to the Bulls and the Magic reportedly having trade talks at some point luca was traded for one pick and a dude with bad knees Yeah Desmond Bane went for four first Like that I spent all yesterday just going Desmond Bane went for four first Yeah but I think when you when you look at it though it’s like yeah it’s four first round picks but like two of those picks are going to be sub 20 They’re going to be worse than the 20 So you’re basically getting Hey bro It don’t matter where they at in the first Desmond Bane went for four first round I get what you’re saying in there bro Hey that’s wild bro No listen I Here’s what I will say I I think um first off talking about the trade the trade is the definition of going allin um I’ve told many people and I’ve said this here on locked on I think Paulo Ban Carol is young LeBron with a with a jump shot I think he’s a phenomenal basketball player I think the only reason the Orlando Magic weren’t higher is because he only played in 43 games last season I believe it was um due to some injury that he dealt with throughout the season Um Paulo Bane Carol’s a monster and you give a guy like that the pieces around him for him to be able to go out there and be successful I think Desmond Bane fits that And so because of that you’re not as worried about going out there and drafting somebody You’re more willing to give up draft capital and kind of make things work or whatever it is Um on the Kobe White side of this did the Bulls miss out on the Kobe White part i don’t know It depends on how serious Orlando was about actually making that deal and getting it done I can’t sit here and tell you that this is AK going back to Orlando and saying “You know what we’re not willing to trade Kobe White and then they gave up four first round picks for Desmond Bane cuz if he did if he did I highly doubt they offered four first round picks.” You know what I mean i highly doubt they offer like I get that AK don’t get me wrong AK gets a lot of slack and he he’s earned a lot of the the talk around AK I want to be clear there right but I don’t know any GM that looks at a 20 point per game score and says I can’t give I the four four first round picks that’s not enough for me to get like and again I love Kobe Me and you both love Kobe I I want to see Kobe White stay here But I’m telling you if you call with four first round picks unprotected There’s not much on this current roster I’m going to say hey no we good on Now we did hold on to Marcus Fizer for uh or for uh instead of getting dewed So I mean it has been done What do you mean by we drafted he was drafted a year or two before Dwight why do you say we held on to him instead of Dwight because uh Miami was going to trade the pick that ended up becoming Dwade for Marcus Fizer because Marcus Fiser started to hit But it it was one of those hindsight I Okay I get Yeah No no but listen Marcus Fiser wasn’t there’s no way you were sitting there like Marcus Fizer is it Marcus you want Fizer for a first round pick give me six But no I I think I think the situation with Kobe is more interesting because to me the Kobe situation now is does the value on Kobe increase possibly with with where Desmond Bane is right That that’s a big deal to get done Does that actually help the Bulls in some sense if they were to move on from Kobe or does this put you in a situation where maybe it was the best case scenario for you of Kobe White sticking around with Josh Getty we saw the rapport on that building Um or and and does that does that kind of keep you in the instead of blowing things up instead of taking away you’re actually adding to this team through the draft and adding to this team possibly some through free agent you don’t have a ton of spots open um to try and improve the what you saw in the second half of last season where maybe it does move Kobe down the depth chart as far as how many shots he’s getting but that depends on what we see from Misellis Yeah Yeah and we shall see And you know Modest definitely has to do more than just everything at the rim or the three-point line at some point And we’ll see if that starts happening this year Let me ask you this part then to to keep this you know built around around the Kobe White aspect If the Bulls still are and keep in mind a lot of it was rumored if the Bulls still are looking to move on from Kobe because of the contract or whatever else reason does you see this trade does that now change it from all right we’re cool with one first round pick to hey no it got to at least be two cuz Desmond Bane you can make a conversation is better than Kobe He’s more active defensively He’s been a better you know still not a great defender but he’s been a better defender than Kobe But I don’t think he’s four first round picks better than Kobe White No that and and that if that makes sense Here’s here’s the problem though Is there another team that’s that is that close if there’s another team that’s that close maybe right is is that possibly and and where are they at that also plays into that If if the Pacers feel like they’re that close but they need a second score next to Tyrese Hallebertton um who who’s going to give you more on the offensive end than than what you’re getting right now from Andrew Nemhard right like I’m not trading Kobe White to the Pacers I’m not going to help you get your championship while you’re up the street from us You know what I mean if the P if the Pacers come calling for Kobe White no we need the Desmond Bane deal like like that You’re you’re Barry How many first round picks you got available you could trade yeah you all the Desmond Bane deal Yeah I’m all in on it right like so I though I think you know what i don’t know I don’t know Ben Ben kind of he’s been some time in the but it’s his first play this this his first deep play Keep in mind he wasn’t healthy last year when they made the play That’s true That is true That is true I don’t know I I I I’m a little more cautious I feel like Ben been on the wrong end of uh a lot of trash talk lately He has He has It’s It’s like It’s like I’m tough I can stop you I don’t need you Both both were very high on Ben Math after his I love me some Ben Math bro That boy could ball But and I think he does ball when when they just go out there and say go score Um no I I just think it would be tough for me to not to make the trade like to say you have to have this Desmond Bane package for you to come Like that’s not where Kobe White is at Desmond Bane is better than Kobe White but and he’s been on a winning team They’ve like even though last year was a struggle for the last two years but they’ve won 60% of the game since Desmond Bane has been there That play the same conversation on Desmond Bane that you’re having about Kobe White Yeah Or on Kobe White that you having about Desmond Bane I guess is the better way to say that So I I think for me the big thing is if you feel like this is what it comes down to the Bulls the Bulls should be the team that is operating with the Orlando mindset And what I mean by that is if you don’t want to pay Kobe White don’t pay him If you’re that matterofact in it Orlando is so matterof fact that Paulo Ban Carol and France Vagner is the answer and you just need the other guy They gave up four first round picks for Desmond Bay Be that matterof fact about the decision you want to make with Kobe White You want to keep Kobe White keep him Pay him Do it Fine Let’s do it Like let’s I’m with it I think Modis probably needs to get more shots but all right let’s roll If you don’t want to pay him don’t halfway do this like you did it with Zack Lavine the entire time he was here where you were like “Yeah we’re going to pay him because we feel like we’re obligated to but also we really don’t want this dude on our team.” You make a good point there Like you’re like like “Yeah don’t don’t uh Dan Armor said something I can’t say on locked on.” Don’t go halfway into it right like just if ain’t no such thing as halfway crooks Yeah If you if you don’t believe in Kobe White don’t pay him Then just for the next two three years to be looking you have you have to between now and the trade deadline you have to make that decision If you are if you are unwilling to pay Kobe White again this is not saying my thoughts on it or if they should or not but if they know that they are hesitant or unwilling to pay Kobe don’t put yourself right back Even though it’s a sim it’s not the same as far as like the cap space and thing that we have the space to sign Kobe and be fine and and still keep things going but don’t do it to where then you’re hurting Kobe’s value then he’s going to be stuck here you’re going to phase him out or whatever it is Like you don’t want to have it does not benefit anybody You know why the the Grizzlies were able to get so much back for Bane because there wasn’t two years of they’re trying to trade Desmond Bane They literally went into offseason they made the decision they traded and they got the most value back for him because of doing that Had the Bulls did that with Zack Lavine we would have gotten three unprotected first round picks So you have to make a decision be decisive on it because when you drag your feet on it it just hurts the value of the player and ultimately your return when you’re in years of of trade rumors It just it it just happens that way And again there’s no better time to ask for a trade hall like that Like again I keep pointing to it but Kobe White coming off his best second half of the season of his career This is the time if you’re going to do it to do it We shall see what happens Overall like I said I hope that Kobe stays around but we’ll see what happens with that one We going to continue the conversation because that wasn’t the only thing that came out this off seasonason It was also Billy Donovan Mark Stein reported and now I believe it even more He’s about to get extended We’ll talk this in three days.” Like “What’s wrong?” If you if you forget for a half a second it’s over You’re not going to it’s it’s the window is very small But you know with that said uh Pat is that uh it also came out now we had a little bit of speculation on this after the Bulls turned down the Knicks uh offer to or uh request to interview Billy Donovan It was speculated like “Hey some have heard around that they could work on a contract extension.” Mark Stein yesterday came out and basically adamantly said the Bulls and Billy Donovan are hammering out the finals of of a contract extension This is probably only that we’ll hear about it This is it That’s it We’re not going to hear years We’re not going to hear money He’s just going to be here next year and it’s going to be what it’s going to be But now that we kind of have it more official still not officially official but more official how do you feel about it listen we were just talking about this over on the breeze this morning for the morning breeze Like outside of Taylor Jenkins there’s nobody out there who I’d want instead of Billy Donovan unless you go find somebody off of the street unless you go find somebody who is the um you know the new piece um that that’s out there right like I knew this was coming and honestly I think this is actually the better of the options than just going out there and adding a Mike Benhoer or adding a Mike Malone And I get it There’s going to be people out there who are like “But they have championships.” Yes they do They also had great players Look at their records without great players Yeah And I know that sounds simple but like that’s how you have to gauge the kind of coach you want here on the Chicago Bulls cuz you basically have that Billy Donovan is still a 100 games above 500 He hasn’t won much here like that’s how much he won in OKC when he had great players So to me the extension is not surprising Going out there and and uh um you know hearing about the extension is probably the most surprising part of all of this cuz like what were we two years into his last extension uh when Kentucky came calling and was like “Hey so do you still have a job there what’s going on?” Yeah Like those are the things for me where I look at it with Billy Donovan in the long run and I’m like you weren’t going to make a change here There’s there’s no reason really to even be surprised that Billy Donovan is getting extended as the Bulls head coach outside of the fact that he’s the third longest tenure head coach and there have been championship coaches who have been fired around That’s the only reason to be surprised by it Yeah I listen the thing with Billy reminds me of you remember when uh a couple years a couple well it was just offseason before this this past one when people were like hey why didn’t the bull why didn’t you interview Jim Harbaugh and it was like well we didn’t have an open position to interview him like why are we interviewing somebody for a position that we didn’t have open it’s like you Billy Donovan for those that actually pay attention to this Bears I mean to this Bulls team you all I don’t think Billy Donovan is going to be removed as the head coach until the Bulls have either a roster that’s in a certain place and they’ve probably gone on playoff runs or whatever and then they’re like well hell we can’t get over the hump It’s not the roster now It’s time to move on from the coach I’m not saying that I agree with that but I’m saying that I’m come to the understanding of being smart and watching this for an office that that’s probably the most likely scenario It’s one of two scenarios Either the Bulls become this playoff team They go on a couple playoff runs and they realize Billy can’t get us over the hump It’s time and we feel very confident in this roster Or Billy Donovan wakes up one day He’s like “Ah maybe I want to go hang out in Miami for a couple of years and not coach nobody Maybe I don’t want to look at you people.” or he’s going to move into the front office That’s the most likely scenarios that’s going to happen there for Billy Donovan to be removed as a head coach until one of those things happen Billy Donovan is going to keep signing contract extensions Just get over it It’s going to keep happening Yeah Listen and and that’s that’s the real situation the Bulls are in Like the there is no we’re moving on or we’re changing or there’s going to be this drastic change of culture They feel like they’re building a culture And to and what I will say to that point is we we are seeing this work again AK’s watching his finals with his pants off Mike Dagno was a part of Billy Donovan’s staff Shay Gilis was first coached by Billy Donovan I think Lou Dort as well if I’m not mistaken Like Billy Donovan was the person that kind of got that started Billy Donovan probably would still be there if he wanted to go through a rebuild Yeah He was the one that said “No that’s not what I want to do I’mma put XYZ in place I’mma move on I’mma be done.” And then he came over here and it’s basically been a rebuild for 5 years But that that is a we’re we’re seeing the situation or the scenario that Hayes laid out work in real time as the Oklahoma City Thunder are now in the NBA finals Now you got to find George Shay Gilas Alexander But maybe that is happening with Modis Bzelis Maybe you found something here or unlocked something by letting Josh Giddy be the number one Like I’m not saying that these are the likely scenarios here but I do understand why they’ve gone with this route And again when you talk about the pieces out there Taylor Jenkins would be my dream That’s it There’s not name another name you would want over Billy Donovan right now I told you before Chris Quinn is definitely one that I want over Billy Donovan uh for a shot like that And that that’s just where we have a difference at I don’t care about the name I I don’t think that you have to get out a better name for them to necessarily be better I think that you have to do a a casting uh a a coaching search a candidate search to find the next guy and I’d be all for that Um but I do understand too that maybe they feel like the the ro the the roster isn’t in the place to do that Billy Donovan is a coach you can bet on but you know so it’s not about a name for me I You’re going you’re going with the guy that’s not the retread that I would You’re talking about retreads then you that I would be fine with Yeah I’m talking about like Fibs is out there Mike Malone is out there I’m good on the retreads I’m good on the retreads at this point like and you know I get it and some people have PTSD from Fred Hoyberg and whatnot but like you you keep going retreads you you kind of cap yourself It’s not very many coach that consistently be retreads that win titles other places I’m not saying it hasn’t happened It has but you don’t typically see that Coach Bud hasn’t been close to back being back to the title I mean it’s something when you think about like you have some coaches like Rick Carile that win title Rick Carile is going to be the first one in a while I I can’t even think of another one um that won Did Mike Brown win the title with He won the title with the Cavs right he was the coach when they won the title Yeah No Tyoo was the coach when they won the title Tyoo was the coach when they won the title Okay I’m sure that somebody would probably just Mike Brown went to the finals with him the first time I can’t even think of a of a retread coach that has won a championship somewhere in the last 20 Now we going back further than that You I mean Phil Jackson um I mean you can count coach Benhoer as a retread He had coached a couple of spots as a head coach by then Oh that’s true Yeah that’s true I give you boot I give you bud Um that’s he’s probably the last one right yeah probably That’s crazy Yeah No retreads please Yeah So yeah we’re good on retreads but you know it is what Unless it’s Taylor Jenkins I’m all for I do love Taylor Jenkins too Come on now You know I’m I’m a big Taylor Jenkins guy Uh still don’t know why they fired him Uh hey man we to then turn around and change the roster Exactly what people said that they need to do instead of like full blow up Like a full blow like let’s just And what are they heading towards now is J getting traded well they do have they have a bunch of expirings and they have multiple first round picks in each of the next two or three drafts So they can make something happen if they want to Yeah I things like that meeting up They did that last year and it was Miami last year where the the whole team but Billy Donovan went to those It was a little bit closer to training camp But he talked about how much weight modest has put on already Um so I went back and looked at some of the the live streams I was been doing with Modis and then looked at that with how where he was around the season I do think it’s not just height I think Modus may put on a good 5 to 8 pounds of muscle pad Well yeah I I think he’s bulked up for sure I think he’s eating better He’s still in Chicago So you know I mean he he knows how to handle the food of of this city versus you know somebody coming Zion could never come here Zion Williams Oh my And pull Okay Both of them are coming food and and and uh north side women No no Chicago food and Mariah Mills But uh the I I think the thing with Modis is that you know I love how I love how he’s bulking up Um I love the fact that he has when on the live stream Stacy was talking to him He’s like “You in the gym?” He’s like “Every day I’m in the gym.” You know what I mean i’m putting in the work I’m trying to get better Um I I I love the mindset that Midas has I don’t know if I can follow the praise that that I was heaping on him just yet Uh because uh what I said Giannis Giannis he said this man being Giannis Comp Thompson the second year is crazy bro Now what I will say is this and I had to uh when I heard this I had to go back and watch some young Giannis First off Modis Bisellis was drafted 10 pounds heavier than Yiannis if you can believe that Giannis came in was real small when he came 194 uh uh uh Modis was drafted at about 204 Um Giannis as a young player was a very inconsistent but would get hot every now and then Three-point shooting guy He wasn’t the star He was there to play off of Jabari Parker Be off of Jabari Parker There’s a lot of plays where Jabari is driving and kicking to the corner to Giannis It looks gross Um I feel like there’s a long way before we get to Giannis level I don’t even know if Modis has the jeans to bulk up like Giannis has Giannis went from 194 to 246 That’s a long way That’s crazy That’s a long way But what I will say is this Um there is a mindset there that is very similar to what Giannis has And that want to to be great that want to to go out there and dominate Modis does have that And right now the one skill set that he can dominate at is going to the bucket So him bulking up him getting stronger it’s only going to increase how efficient he is around the rim He was incredibly efficient last season It’s going to increase how often he is putting mugs on posters around the rim And what’s going to happen is at a certain point you get the Zack Lavine effect Remember Zack Lavine would drive to the rim and Mugs would just be like “Well not jumping in front of that.” Like you’re going to start to get much easier baskets because people are going to become afraid of you going downhill And that’s where you want to be stronger you want to be tougher because there’s going to be a lot of grabbing at the wrist grabbing at the shoulders to be able to finish through that And Madison has shown he can be a little bit of a finesse player around that rim as well So I don’t know if I’m all the way in where where uh um IO is but IO’s getting to see him much more up close and has also guarded Giannis on Kmpo but that I feel like that’s a that’s a long way uh uh to get to Giannis levels right now Yeah I mean you know that’s why I’m I’m somebody who I don’t like using comps Like I I I especially for star level players I mean and most time you want to use a comp like for the skill set not necessarily the caliber of player but I was like he’s going to he can dominate like Giannis is like “Bro can we can we see him take somebody off the dribble more first before we start talking about dominating like Giannis?” Like we just got to see a little bit of that That’s He did get Buddy off the dribble on the baseline last year He I mean yeah he had a couple of moments off the dribble last year Yeah Yeah He he just I I think the thing with with Modis is too Modis is trying to become a much more well-rounded player and he’ll probably never get to to Giannis level around the rim because of that I think Modis does want to have that three shot three ball in his game Um and I’m going to be honest with you because of Giannis strength Giannis actually looked like a point forward when he came into the league I mean yeah he was 6’8 He was 6’8 He grew to 6’11 Yeah he was 6’8 196 lb He was basically Josh Giddy measurements He came essentially he came into the league looking like a a point forward And then and then he went from that to the next summer 6’11 222 lbs He’s now up to 246 Crazy bro It’s freaking nation When they call him a Greek freak it’s he is a freaking nation And and that is why like you the comparison I get what Yiannis what Modis I get what I is saying about Modis though where you know you feel like he can dominate in that factor we’ve talked about this if he adds a three ball you are going to feel like you’re always on your back foot and I feel like that’s the big thing with Giannis is you never feel comfortable guarding Giannis like even last season right there was a point where it was kind of like all right well let him shoot jumpers who’s going to stop him from getting to the rim like let him shoot jumpers is Great But Giannis will also just be like “I’m not shooting this You probably should move your wrist.” Like I think that is the kind of conversation where if you’re a defender and you’re always on your back foot that opens so much up for the offense in totality I think that’s a place where Modus can get to But I’ll ask you this Like are we being too like let’s wait and see we might be but listen I’ I’d much rather be too much wait and see and be completely shocked and surprised to be like Giannis that Yiannis is going to take a leap I mean not Yiannis that modest is going to take a a leap in year two And then we’re like h I I feel I feel like we’re doing the uh remember back in the day when when your PlayStation disc wouldn’t work You’d be like man I don’t even care if this mug worked Did it Did it work did it work no It’s up It’s up Get on the game That work every time You know what I think it is bro like honestly and I and I can admit this It’s a little bit of PE will PTSD bro Like I I I got to see it bro Like I I I can’t just assume anybody’s taking I can’t take I can’t uh just hope anybody’s going to take a step anymore They got to show me That’s just is what it is bro They got to show Yeah Yeah I listen I I I think that that I I’m right there with you I’m excited about Modis I do think that Modis is the real deal I don’t know if he’s a superstar level player I do think he can be a star level player and his development and mindset will help him get there but we got a long way to go before we get there Yeah Can he start the whole season like can we can he start the whole season can he take players off the dribble is he shotgun you can’t be a star player shooting the ball 30 something% from the field You just can’t That it’s just the reality Trey Young does Trey Young doesn’t shoot 30 something% from the field I think Trey Young shoots 41% from the field Okay That’s not 30 something percent Hey it ain’t good Yeah Oh yeah But I mean also he has he has an amazing three-point shooting percentage to balance that out too Like doesn’t Did he last year no Trey shot like 32% last year Last year What’ he shoot he shot 34% from three and 41% from real That’s bad Hey Trey Young had a couple of seasons of being terrible from the three-point line but we just ignore it because he make it
