Is the Bucks’ Bench Mob the Key to a Refresh in Milwaukee?
assuming most of the pieces are back next season there is one glaring problem with the Milwaukee Bucks roster camille and I tell you what it is next on Locked on Bucks you are Locked on Bucks your daily Milwaukee Bucks podcast part of the Locked On podcast network your team every day welcome in to Locked On Bucks i’m Justin Garcia joined as always by Camille Davis you can find me on the Bucks Radio Network you can hear Camille on the Technical File podcast as well as the Locked On NBA podcast as well we thank you for making this your first listen each and every day today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel right now new customers can get $200 in bonus bets when your first $5 bet wins well Camille we said there was one small problem with this roster um a couple actually but let’s assume that John Horst is able to retain the necessary pieces out there and you know I talked about it with Matt a little bit a couple days ago and just kind of reading the tea leaves i think there’s a pretty strong sense of optimism that the Bucks will in fact keep most of that core um Giannis has a lot to do with that as well but to round it back here if that group is largely back there’s one thing that stands out about this group and I think you probably saw it at times in that series against the Indiana Pacers it is who is the number two scorer yeah and I mean is it quite as important as it used to be when we get into the conversation over well it’s no longer super team driven and you just need this top tobottom depth bucks at least that group starts to fit into that mold but you need a shot maker alongside Giannis and I I mean I think there’s two rather obvious candidates assuming the Bucks retain them on this roster one of them probably stretched a little bit in that regard but that’s where you start to wander into the I don’t know do they have a number two is the way you round out this roster just saying “Hey we got a bunch of number three scorers.” And Giannis I mean that’s that’s the pro the thing here like I’m not sure if many people realize how like good of a number two option Dame was for the Bucks when it comes to giving them that scoring punch like or Chris Middleton for that matter that matter as well um Dame and Giannis were the highest scoring duo in the NBA so you know Giannis is was one of two players to average over 30 points this season him and SGA um and then Dame was the 10th lead you know number scorer in the league averaging almost 25 points a game so it’s like is there anybody on the Bucks who can give you 25 a game that I’m not sure of so I actually just went and looked to see how many different playoff teams had doubledigit scores and how many of them scored at least 20 points a game and generally you’re looking to have at least two guys that can get you at least 20 a game like you look at Detroit they only had the one guy they had Kade uh the Bugs had Damon they had Giannis in the regular season we’re talking about here cleveland had two guys uh Indie had one but they also had seven guys that average double figure scoring houston had one guy they also had seven guys that average double double figure scoring but we know how they got their buck is through that defense okc had two guys the Clippers had three which you know uh Harden Kawhai uh and Norm Powell as well the Lakers had two quote unquote they traded one for another at the trade deadline with AD for Luca to go alongside LeBron denver had two Boston had two guys the Knicks had two even Orlando had two guys but they only have four guys uh in total that scored in double digit scoring so my question when I was thinking about this was like do the Bucks have anyone who I think could give them 20 points a game next to Giannis and the first name I came to was Gary Trent Jr if he is retained um he seems like he has the shotmaking if you give him enough opportunities he could get there but he’s never even averaged 20 in his career he’s 18 point at best kevin Porter Jr averaged 19 points a game uh a few years ago which you know is close to it uh but ultimately like I still think that Gary Tren would have that highest likelihood based on what we saw in the playoffs um and just him playing next to getting better looks but again I think ultimately for the Bucks it might not be so much as a clear number two uh but having a few high-end guys who can give you 17 18 19 in addition to Giannis doing what he does and then hopefully you have at least six guys here who can give you double digit scoring along the way yeah I mean and you can see in the graphic we put front and center Gary Trent Jr and Bobby Portoris um I would drift to Bobby Portoris first because I mean I we’ve kind of joked like well you know what you’re going to get from him where he’s he’s basically guaranteed 15 and 10 anytime he touches the floor his careerhigh um in point production was with the Bucks in their championship defense season where he averaged just under 15 points per game um that was a year though where Bobby Poris I believe that was the most minutes he had played in his career um efficiency really started to climb once again for him and he was asked to do a lot more because that was the year where Brook Lopez was missing twothirds of the season because of back surgery so you’ve seen putting more on his plate him coming up big and and remember I mean they asked him to do more they still had Chris Middleton and Drew Holidayiday so that’s a piece of it i mean now I think you look at and you say “Well we know you’re a talented scorer and we need somebody else that can score besides Giannis.” The pairing as we saw the numbers back it up last year was the best that duo was on the floor together Giannis and Bobby Poris and certainly with Bobby’s offensive shot profile that pairs nicely with Giannis so that’s where I would go first um the Gary Trent Jr discussion and there’s certainly talent there for him to be that guy or or at least to step up his scoring i mean again we’re assuming he’s going to be back which I suppose is a dangerous assumption because you know what the market dictates but you know his point production as you pointed to last year just over 11 points per game that was his lowest scoring output per game basis since his second year in the league but it’s also worth noting the minutes were his second fewest since that season as well um I’m going to go out on a limb and say that’s not going to be the case on both fronts if Trent Jr is back with the Bucks next season so I do think kind of looking at Indiana and what they’ve cobbled together is in some ways one of the comps you would look at um you know hey our leading scoreer is going to average more than Indies and and Giannis who knows maybe next year Giannis averages 35 points again um but I think the big difference is and you brought this up the double digit scores in in some of Indy’s secondary pieces i mean right now I would take Pascal Seakum as a number two option over anybody on this team you see what Benedict Mathan did in an NBA Finals game Miles Turner as well so they have I think more consistent and reliable and just more of those secondary guys there’s an interesting conversation to be had about Gary Trent Jr and whether or not he becomes that number two option and one of the spins and one of the sells that the Bucks could make which may be a shortterm benefit for Gary Trent Jr short-term long-term problem for the Bucks we’ll get into that conversation and take a look at some more numbers surrounding this Bucks offense coming up after the break on Locked on Bucks alip Pop is a brand new type of soda it’s made for people who love the classic taste of soda but they want something that can support their health a little bit better with just 2 to 5 g of sugar and 9 g of prebiotic fiber in every single can Lollipop is reimagining soda in a way that’s better for your gut traditional sodas are loaded with sugar like a Coke has 39 gram orange Fanta has about 44 gram ollipop flips the script with just a fraction of the sugar no artificial sweeteners and gut friendly ingredients like Alismart a blend which has been shown to support digestive and overall health it’s a soda that tastes like the real thing but it actually does something good for your body so personally I got it right here with me i’m a fan of the grape the grape is fantastic to me and it’s something about being able to open up a can of soda and know that it’s all right for you also getting older too and knowing it’s going to do some good for you along the way so make sure that you go out there and get you some lollipop you can actually get a free can of lollipop just buy any two cans in store and they will reimburse you for one of them head over to drinkllipop.com/lockdonba to claim your free can and find lollipop near you that’s drinkallipop.comlockedonba you see who the real VIP is of the show i mean Camille’s the one they’re sending cans of lollipop to me drinking like too gary Trent Jr so here’s the interesting thing and um I uh we should have I should have reached out to to Van or Bobby Marks on this but the one plus one in what that does capwise um what it kind of locks you into there are some ramifications there um I do wonder if that’s something that you see because if if you’re Gary Trent Jr and maybe the market once again is not quite what you imagine i think we’ve seen enough rumbling to get the sense it’s got to be more um I mean Matt I think kicked out the I’ve heard anywhere from 6 to10 million for Gary Trent Jr on an annual basis i think if you can get him for six million you would absolutely love that you get him for 10 I think you still bite the bullet and you say okay we got $4 million basically or three what three plus for Kevin Porter Jr um but I do wonder if your Gary Trent Jr side and what complicates this is what you saw happen to the market last year where you were hoping for the mid level you turned down an offer around that range from the Raptors and then ended up taking the veteran minimum on the open market but I I do wonder if you look at the you look at the situation in Milwaukee and you say “Okay Giannis is there um we may have the same conversation with Giannis next year who knows probably yeah but there is definitely a window open for me to really feast like they need scoring they’re going to I would assume start me we talked about the minutes being as low as they were a year ago i would assume that’s going to change uh it was what 28 minutes a game last year i would guess Gary Tren Jr is going to be a 30 plus minutes per game guy if he’s back with the Bucks this upcoming season and if you look at that and you say “Okay can I just rehab my value once again and say “Okay I’m going to take a shorter deal again with the Bucks that’s more and at least double than I made last year.” But if I’m starting and if I’m scoring 18 points a game and I’m having you know efficient nights doing that I’m going to command even more i’m gonna be close to that if not at the full mid-range level the next time I hit the market yeah and I think the the role here for him could be an appealing part of coming back to try to again re-up and get a bit more money in the next or the following offseason as well like when you think about the Malik Beasley path that he took signed the minimum in Milwaukee he goes to Detroit signs for what about 6 million there in Detroit and now he’s up again where he had another really productive year he was actually their second leading scoreer after Ivy went down um so he provided a lot of value there so it’ll be interesting to see his market and I think Do you think he gets more than Gary Trent oo I I think that’s quite possible yeah i mean history would seem to indicate yes he already got more than him um last year and certainly the splash he made shooting the ball i think if he gets more you’re you’re really overlooking one side of the floor and saying you know what we feel like we like what we got around him he’s that missing piece yeah and I think it’s a it’s a fit too for him in Detroit like he seems to have found something there that he likes with the team that they’re building with the fans with the city um and I do think that tends to play a part i mean the money talks and I think that Detroit will pay him because he provides valuable floor spacing for them with Kade out there uh but yeah I do think he probably commands a little bit more than Gary Trent Jr but I don’t think it’s going to be so far off where you’re like dang he got paid that much more than Gary Trent Jr because Gary does give you that defense as well i’m a little bit more than what Malik can give you but Malik can also put up nine 10 threes in a game really really quick which is a valuable skill set as well and we’ve talked about it before too um I wouldn’t say I like push back on the notion that Gary Trent Jr is going to get close to $10 million um per season i mean I remember asking Matt do you really you think he’s going to crack that eight figure mark um part of it to me is just you know we’ve gone over this quite a bit looking at the der of teams that actually have cap space this summer and then okay let’s look at the list quinton Grimes is a free agent i think Quinton Grimes they’re basically the same age but Quinton Grimes I would assume gets more money think Gary Turn Jr Cam Thomas is a free agent he’s younger and we talk about with Malik some questions on one end of the floor certainly with that with Cam Thomas but the age and the scoring and volume that he can do I would assume Cam Thomas is going to have a larger market than Gary Trent Jr you got Malik Beasley who’s comparable nquille Alexander Walker is the best of the bunch that’s out there on the free agent market so there’s a decent amount of names that are out there um I mean I think realistically if you’re looking for a two guard at best Gary Trent Jr is the third or fourth name that you land on here so you know if if he gets that much and we’re seeing wow they’re really paying two guards this summer it’s not what I projected but good for him yeah i mean I’m never going to be mad at somebody getting their money like it might not be my team able to pay you but I understand that for athletes the career is short you were trying to maximize your dollar while you can go ahead and do that but I do think that uh I think that Gary Tren Jr with the Bucks and offer him enroll and whatnot if he is looking to increase that payroll this will be a great opportunity for him to do so because the playing time is going to be there for him but Justin I have to ask you this question and I know that there are going to be listeners being like is she out of her mind but I have to ask the question we’re talking about possible second options on the Bucks is Kyle Kosma in that conversation have to ask the question he I have to ask the question he is someone we saw him with the Wizards he averaged you know a little bit over 20 points a game he was with the Wizards as their quote unquote number one but after the way the playoffs went last year where the Bugs found that their best rotation was with him out of it like does he come off the bench this upcoming year i’m not sure but if he’s starting does he have an opportunity to be somebody who is a second option while Dame is out i would assume he’s not starting for this team and and for that alone I I would say no i mean I I think again another guy and that’s the difficult part about this who’s your number two is you keep hovering around these names that you technically don’t have under contract that you still need to retain and I think another one you would float out there is Kevin Porter Jr and saying well he’s shown in flashes what he’s capable of doing he certainly had big games against the Bucks throughout his career especially that 50piece that he had and you know the talent is there to score it’s just a matter of harnessing that consistently like can he creep close to a 20ish points per game type of guy um I would put Kyle Kosma even below the name of of Kevin Porter Jr just because I would assume he’s going to come off the bench and it’s not to say that you can’t be a volume bench scorer but I I think I’m not trying to make the comparison between these two players so I cannot preface that enough but I think what he gives you in terms of the skill set offensively and and the way to best plug him in it basically replicates oh boy I even struggle to say this go ahead it’s closer to Giannis where I think he’s plugging that hole of when Giannis comes off the bench and some overlap that I just don’t think he’ll have the volume of it because of that yeah I was in the same boat when I was going through it all the juniors Gary Bobby Kevin they were all I mean the the main point Camille the Bucks just need a senior that is going to be the number two guy here yeah and honestly too like I I do think that that Pacers route is probably the way that the Bucks will have to operate a bit next season where it’s not necessarily you’re counting on one guy every single night to be that number two option but you’re going to have a few guys who can pop off and with that I do think you know Gary Trent Jr Kevin Porter Jr Bobby Portoris Jr if they’re all back will probably be the two through four you know number scorers on the team but another guy who I think could really help the Bugs offense is that AJ Green um he has just shown with his ability to knock down that three at that clip 40% clip uh that it’s a valuable skill set i just think for the Bucks they have to do more of getting him more shot opportunities like next year I want to see AJ Green shooting at least eight threes a game he shot three threes a game two years ago five this past season want to see that volume continue to increase if he can add to his game and the way he can get to his threes running him off ball being able to get a dribble or two off to relocate if the closeout comes uh with his shooting touch like he can be a lethal weapon for this team as well which again if you have those juniors and you have AJ Green you have Kuz quote off quote off the bench possibly which I think makes the most sense as well um you’re looking at another like four or five guys there who can at least give you some double digit scoring to go along with what Giannis has going for you um I do wonder if we’ve short changed Kevin Porter Jr a little bit so I do want to talk about that and one of the questions that’s come up a couple of times in the chat uh the future Bobby Portoris and what is the market for him out there so we’ll we’ll wrap up the show with those two thoughts coming up after this on Locked on Box time to talk to you about today’s show sponsor FanDuel the NBA playoffs are in full swing every night delivering highlight worthy your first $5 bet if it wins you’ll get $200 in bonus bets make every moment more with FanDuel official sports betting partner of the NBA um okay so let’s save the Bobby Poris for the last piece here kevin Porter Jr did we short change him and not really spending any time again you got to retain him i think of the list of guys we’ve gone through safe to say you feel best the Bucks best at them retaining Kevin Porter Jr than any of those names is that a safe assumption yes yes just because I think the price point is going to be the lowest uh for him and the need is certainly and the need is there because he can walk into an opportunity here with Dame being out knowing like I’m going to play a lot of basketball same thing we said with Gary Trent yeah exactly exactly so the opportunity is there which I think helps uh the Bucks pitch to retain him and for Kevin Porter Jr when I was going through it and thinking like he was on my short list of guys who could be a number two option but for him one thing he’ll have to continue to work on is just the catch and shoot aspect of his game because he’s going to get a lot of those opportunities if Giannis is really running that offense so he has to be able to create off the catch as well as what he can bring off the dribble which as we saw throughout the season especially towards the end there when they really started really picking the momentum um he’s actually been a better better passer then I expected from him as well but the decision making for him has to continue to improve as well along the way so if he can improve the catch and shoot numbers improve the decision-m in addition to what he could do if you know Giannis is on the bench and he has the ball in his hand a little bit more um or you know the ball just swings his way need to get a bucket I think he’s someone who can do it he that 50point game was his second year in the league it was a season where he played just 26 games and averaged under 17 points per game so the talent is definitely there um he averaged just under 20 points a game his final year in Houston and that was uh 2223 uh ended up playing overseas had that contract that was only partially guaranteed and kind of blew up on him because of everything that has been um I wouldn’t even say well documented just documented off the court in his past so there is talent there and as we mentioned there is a need he is 24 years old as well that I think that’s the interesting part about all of these guys is the overall point from all of this is they don’t have a number two if this group stays together you got a bunch of number by squint I can see you as a number three basically but there’s not a true number two and we’ve spent a lot of time saying you know I think the the big message from this playoffs is just to minimize your weaknesses on any end of the floor just make sure there’s no one spot that the opponent can pick at and that means more depth than anything else so if you’re rounding out a roster that is full of guys that are number threes and you Yeah I think overall solid two-way play from most of these guys you’re arguably in a much better spot than to just say it’s Giannis and Dame and we’ll figure out the rest of the group around them but the big piece is okay but you got to retain those guys and you know I think the interesting part is as we kind of wind it down with that that Bobby Portoris discussion is the the point we made about uh Gary Trent Jr and we just mentioned it as well with Kevin Porter Jr i think it applies to basically every one of those guys in that look we want you here we can pay it’s not a spot where we’re up against we’re in the second apron and we can only give you veteran minimums we can pay to keep you here we want you here and oh by the way you’re going to be able to do more next se like Bobby Portoris as of this moment I would assume Bobby Portoris is your starter on that alongside Giannis Gary Tren Jr i would assume he’s starting Kevin Porter Jr i would assume he’s starting that you’re telling these guys you’re gonna get a lot more opportunities and you’re gonna start that you know maybe the sell isn’t we’re all in on a championship but as we talked about you know rehabbing your value and continuing to build up that bank account that’s one way to do it it is and we know Bobby how he feels about the city and he’s mentioned he’s taken a few deals for the team along the way here but again if it’s all seeming as if as well that Brook Lopez will not be returning to the Milwaukee Bucks this upcoming year so your point about Bobby being able to like hey you can start here like we’ve heard Nas Reed talk about in Minnesota of like I’m at a point now where I’m I’m tired of coming off the bench like I’m I’m ready to start somewhere and we haven’t heard Bobby Porter say that bobby has been somebody who’s been all about I’ll do what the team needs so on and so forth but if presented with an opportunity to start and you have that group that we saw starting in the playoffs I keep saying that’s a really good place to start for this retooling of the Bucks around Giannis going forward and especially if you’re playing this style of ball with Giannis being the offensive initiator with Giannis having the ball in his hand like he’s going to draw so much attention uh from his gravity alone and when he and he can see the floor really well so being able to spray out to Bobby Porter Jr being able to spray out to KPJ or Gary Trent or AJ Green like I do think if you have enough solid shooting with good defense uh it can mitigate the the need in the regular season i’ll say for sure for that guaranteed number two scorer now when Dame comes back late in the season you see how that come how he integrates back into everything but I do think if they’re able to resign all those guys they have enough and I I feel like Kyle Kosma is also that wild card factor coming off the bench as well because if he can find some find his rhythm find his spots be put in positions to succeed like he could he could be someone who’s giving you you know a solid 15 16 points a game as well um yeah and look I’ve said it many times I don’t this isn’t to knock or doubt anything about Damen Lillard i think we have to say if Damen Lillard if Yeah that’s fair comes back because you never know how rehab goes or anything else and especially a player that’s going to be what today was Drew Holidayiday’s 35th birthday i think Dame is a week or so after him so going to be up there as well um and yeah to to get back to the Bobby part the other kind of tiein to the rest of this group is we talked about uh Gary Trent Jr and you look at the free agents that are out there to a lesser extent it applies to uh Kevin Porter Jr as well who’s kind of a combo tweener guy do you put him in at a two guard do you put him at a point guard if you put him at point guard you still have other guys fred Van Vleet what happens with that team option i would assume he’s going to be on the market uh Ty Jerome is a free agent dennis Shruder everyone’s favorite is a free agent davon Mitchell who did some big rehab value in Miami he’s a free agent as well so you got a lot of names that are out there and I think the same applies to Bobby you mentioned one of those names nas Reed Julius Randall has a player option um Jonathan Kaminga is a guy that you would somewhat lump in there as well so it’s it also how do you view him is he a four is he a five but none of these guys are the clear-cut number one at their position in this free agent class and I think that’s one thing that is good for the Bucks to say “Okay it’s not the clear guy that everybody is going to be targeting we have more flexibility and we got a lot of opportunities for you this upcoming season um the last thing too I I forget who it was I was talking about this with but they mentioned Golden State as that’s a team that’s interested in in kicking the tires on Bobby Portoris you know we’ve talked about the Warriors needing some size and needing some help on the glass i can see how that would relate but that’s that’s a pay cut for Bobby Poris unless the Warriors do something to shed a decent amount of cap room here that’s a pay cut because all they got available is the taxpayer midlevel and I don’t think it’s the scenario it was what even five years ago four or five years ago to say “Want to come here and and play with this group and play with Steph?” I mean we’re we’re talking about the same discussions we’ve had about this Bucks team for the last couple of years you’re talking about a 37y old Steph Curry a third a going on 36-y old Jimmy Butler a 35-year-old Draymond Green and a team that plays in the Western Conference that isn’t just loaded like they once were so yeah I I mean if if situation were a little different I’d keep an eye open on we’ll see if if they come calling if Bobb’s interested in that but that’s a pretty sizable pay dump that he’d be taking yeah unless they find a way to like move Kaminga or something along those lines well he’s a free agent so it would have to be like moving Moses Moody or something yeah well they have to like you said find a way to shed some salary so but even a sign and trade wouldn’t make sense if it was oh we’re going to sign and trade uh Kaminga for but numbers just don’t Yeah it’s so rare that you see player for player signing trades that doesn’t work so I mean something to keep an eye on but as as we wrap here one more name I will throw out there not as a second option but adding into the idea if the Bucks can just cobble together enough guys that can give you double digit scoring we’ve mentioned you know Bobby Portoris Jr as someone who could be a number two as well as Gary Tren Jr Kevin Porter Jr mentioned AJ Green of like you can be a lethal scorer here which can add to the offense but I’ll also give Ryan Rollins that that same credit of like I think Ryan Rollins can give you 10 points a game if he is in the rotation and you add that in with the defense ability as well like if the Bucks could find a way to even add a few more defenders and just face the floor there I do wonder if they can use that defense to fuel their offense a little bit more often um in the upcoming season as well i I should clarify this too i The Warriors technically could use the full I believe tax pyramid level but they got to do some wiggling to get there i mean they have nine guys under contract and right now they’re basically that dollar figure below the tax so it would be the first in a string of many moves for them to open up the full non-t taxpayer mid level uh leave your thoughts who if everything stays as is who is the most likely guy to be the number two scoring option for this Bucks team and you know we can save it for next week Camille we didn’t mention is there an outside candidate as we’ve always seen John Horst lurk in the shadows in moments like this but leave your thoughts we’ll address that on next week’s show that’ll do it for today for Camille i’m Justin we’ll talk with you guys once again next week on Locked on Bucks

maybe they get a rookie
We just have a combination of 2nd options. KPJ, Trent and Bobby are going to have to be consistent. Giannis and KPJ has to make more of an effort of getting Bobby and Trent going early. We have 6 guys that can be very impactful.
I have a feeling KPJ is going to go off this year and play more like the player we see in flashes. Porter just doesn't know when to take over a game or keep trying get the other guys involved. Sometimes he's too unselfish, which hurts the offense at times. But I'm most confident in KPJ, then Trent and Portis. I think we have a great core to start with.
Get rid of Doc. Blow up the old men roster and go young. Develop a new offensive and defensive system around Giannis and the young players. You dont need a number 2 if you play faster and with more energy. The whole #2 scoring option is really old school slow offense pounding the rock.
KPJ is the #2 option….no doubt!
with dame we hope for a deep 3 and we given up lay ups on def..trade dame and doc for a tost!!
Were stuck in the 2000s. Develop a team. Dame slowed us down. Poor transition defense. Too slow dribbling up and letting the defense bake a cake before he got over half court. Try something different please. We didn't beat a single top 3 east team. Please something isn't working.
Kuzma can grow into that #2 scorer.
Greek is leaving TRUST this a play in team at best
I know KPJ pass is horrible but I think he has the best upside, and I think players like Giannis and Portis being his vets is the best thing for him. When was the last time we had a guard who could penetrate and dunk in traffic!
I might try Olipop but yall scared me with built bar 😂😂
dame is trash, give the shot attempts he took to kpj and i can almost guarantee you the net is basically the same when you factor in defense , steals, rebounding etc
Kevin Porter Jr will clearly be the #2 next season by late December for sure
Bucks will suck next season a mediocre team.. i hope GA will ask to leave.. He will not win anymore in Milwaukee
Trade Kuzma and our pick for Demar Derozan he's the most healthy can guard 1-3 can win games by himself if needed make it happen!
Did Camille say we need 6 other guys to average double figures?? 😂 To ever have 7 guys in double figures for even just one game is pretty rare.
Kuzma and the 2nd for Vucevic 1 for 1 or add Ball Ayo or Jone w the Middleton Exception
Giannis was the problem. He made this Bucks team good for shit
Bobby can't run up the court, he can't jump, his shot gets blocked, how is a player like this even considered
