REPORT: Jonathan Kuminga Drawing Miami Heat Interest | Golden State Warriors Podcast

jonathan Kaminga has reportedly sparked some interest from a couple of Eastern Conference teams and one of them could potentially provide a trade package that would return a very familiar face to the Bay Area that’s a tease all ahead on today’s Locked On Dubs you are Locked on Warriors your daily Golden State Warriors podcast what are they going to say now part of the Locked On podcast network FanDuel right now new customers can get $200 in bonus bets when your first $5 bet wins that is FanDuel my name’s Charlie Walter the host of this show Credentials formerly a 957 The game that’s the flagship radio station for your Golden State Warriors also cover the team for CBS News Bay Area my guest today is Matt Koulski let’s break it down all right you begged for him and he’s back after a quick sabbatical it’s Matt Koulsky on the program today breaking down a few things i I want to get into this Jiren Jackson Jr trade rumor for about 45 seconds not too long because there obviously was some hype around Dub Nation that you know maybe after Desmond Bane was traded to the Magic for Contavius Caldwell Pope a handful of draft picks and and really was sold extremely high um to to bring Jiren Jackson Jr a nice shooter to Orlando and that’s exactly what Orlando needs is someone that could put the ball in the bucket but a lot of people assumed all right John Morant Jiren Jackson Jr Maybe just maybe one of these players is on the table as they kind of look to to shed cap and maybe go a different route now the reports coming out from Shams saying that they do not believe as of right now the uh Grizzlies will not be trading either John Morant or Jiren Jackson Jr after trading Desmond Bane on Sunday not looking to deal either the two remaining stars they cleared some cap space to complete a renegotiation and an extension with Jiren Jackson Jr so until we get some sort of news that changes on that front there’s really not a lot to bring up right i mean Jiren Jackson Jr the skill set that he would bring to the Warriors is enticing it is a dream fit but if the man’s not available what are we doing aside from getting some clickbait with a thumbnail right yeah i mean look he’s got a great relationship with Draymond Green he’s uh exactly what they need from a size and skill standpoint but if he’s not available he’s not available so uh I understand why people were interested i was interested in that from a Warriors perspective i texted you and said “Is this what do you think could this happen?” Seems like no we can usually trust Shams so unless things change yeah uh bummer but no JJ for Warrior fans and one of the issues of why it could not happen most likely aside from the fact that you know they don’t want to trade him but even if they did the Warriors just don’t really unless Draymond is involved in that trade they don’t really have a way to make the money work and obviously you say “Well Jonathan Kaminga will do the whole signing trade thing.” The issue is unless it’s at the deadline if they’re trading him this off season they’re bringing back half the money and okay so 15 million you throw in Bajimsky you throw in Moody you throw in all these things to potentially make it work and there’s just not really a way to to get that deal done so the assumption is that Warrior’s best course of action is probably just to keep Jonathan Kaminga see what he can do raise his value and then re-evaluate things if he truly can’t fit in and I know it’s it’s gonna be hard to do another uh a podcast season of why the hell is he not getting x y and z amount of minutes or why does he go for 32 one game and then a DMP the next because we know it’s coming it’s just the circle of life but now we’re hearing that potentially league sources saying that Jonathan Kaminga to the Bulls and to the Heat would make the most sense as those are the two teams that may have some interest we’ve already talked about the ties with Chicago players like Kobe White and and Vuch and and players that could realistically make sense in Golden State the Miami Heat though that’s one that we really have not brought up at all i know that some say “Why don’t you do the the direct swap and get Andrew Wiggins back?” Unfortunately that doesn’t work either so what are you looking at in terms of the Miami Heat well listen that doesn’t work directly but that’s what you’re looking at if you’re looking at the Heat right i mean you don’t need Tyler Hero sure it’d be great if you could get Bam but I doubt that’s what the Heat have in mind you’re looking at Andrew Wiggins and look to get to you mentioned it let’s just say and I think 30 million is like enough to get Kaminga excited but not so crazy that teams wouldn’t offer it to him let’s say the Heat are willing to pay Kaminga 30 million a year that counts as 15 against Andrew Wiggins’s 27 how much more than Jonathan Kaminga would you be willing to put Andrew Wiggins would you be willing to give up in order to put Andrew Wiggins right back next to Steph and Draymond but this time Jimmy Butler’s there too you know what the easy answer is to financially make it work it’s Moses Moody’s 13 million and then get another player from Miami that makes the minimum uh but they can’t do it now they’d have to wait until the deadline right no no no that they could do now because if you’re only counting Kaminga as the 15 to the 30 you throw on 13 from Moody and you’re there are you willing to give up that that entire draft to bring Andrew Wiggins back now you still don’t have a center in that scenario i think we start talking about guys like you know can you get Brook Lopez to come here on a probably not a minimum although who knows he’s old uh but maybe on a mid-level except you know taxpayer mid-level which I don’t have the number in front of me but maybe they can get up to seven or eight million now they also have a trade exception i believe it’s from Kyle Anderson and I think it’s worth about $8 million and I believe they could use that in this deal so maybe it could be uh well I don’t know if you’re going to feel better about giving up PJsky but maybe it turns into something like and this is where it would get interesting would you do if it were buddy Buddy Kaminga and the trade exception that’s getting you to about $31 million so maybe they’d be willing to move off Haimei Hakez would you do it for Would you do Buddy Kaminga the trade exception and maybe a draft pick for Jaime Hakez and Andrew Wiggins i’d still shooting yeah that’s that leaves you a little short on shooting you are going all in on wings because you still don’t have a big um There really is not a big Here’s my issue they’re not going to give you Kell Wear and and they’re not going to give you Bam so there’s really not a big available I would imagine from my issue with all this Kolski before we go on too much further because I was listening to Slater and even he was kind of confused by the situation because you don’t run into typically when you’re trading a player you’re not trying to get them back right it’s like a stock when you dump the stock you’re not immediately unless you’re day trading or something you’re not going back and and plucking that thing he even questioned like I don’t think the Warriors can even do that for one full year which would take you to this year’s deadline if they even wanted to get it done but he wasn’t even positive about it and there so many damn rules in the NBA that it is confusing at times to know what you can and can’t do listen I’ve been wrong before i was wrong this very offseason at the beginning about how Kaminga the restrictions worked for trading Kaminga’s uh contract was changed in the last CBA but I am 95% sure that the the offseason turnover makes Andrew Wiggins a viable trade option for the Warriors um now if you pay Kaminga 27 million a year and wait till December then you could theoretically make a straightup swap but if we’re talking about what would you do what could you do with him this off season and the Heat and the Bulls are the two teams coming up like unless something weird’s going on in Miami and either Bam Adabio their best player or Kell Wear their best young player uh are available there’s no bigs on that roster tyler Hero doesn’t strike me like you need just a slightly better version of Buddy Healed not really um it’s got to be Wiggins right i mean that’s the only way the Warriors are going to engage and you know that can you imagine a player for player swap that would make Steve Kerr happier than Jonathan Kaminga for Andrew Wiggins like oh god we’re speaking Steve Kerr’s language right now so to the extent that it’s even conceivable I don’t know man i I have to be honest i don’t know that you’re a better team if you do that but you’re certainly a team with more assets that the coach is willing to use coming up what type of vets should the Warriors be looking for this off season and maybe if it’s not vets young cheap talent does that even exist we’re going to break it down coming up on Locked on Warriors and buddy stop trying to dribble the ball ever check your bank account and wonder where’d all my money go between dining out online shopping entertaining we got a lot of things going on and it is easy to lose track and that is where Monarch Money comes in it’s your personal CFO giving you full visibility and control over your finances monarch Money is not just a budgeting app it’s a complete financial command center sounds confusing it is not what it allows you to do track accounts investments all your spending in one place so you’re not managing your money you’re just building wealth you get great insights like how much you’re spending on certain services or deliveries or uh subscriptions whatever it may be and that’s a good way to save money it’s also easy to manage the cash with your partner smoother than ever track shared personal accounts set goals stay on the same page without the stress take control of your finances with Monarch Money use code locked on MBA at monarchmoney.com for 50% off your first year that is monarchmoney.com code locked on NBA for half off your first year i think in that scenario maybe you’re resigning Cavon Looney as your additional big maybe you’re hoping to get an awful lot out of Quinton Post i I don’t I don’t know how they look at that which is what on the TK show or on um plus minus i know that Kawakami was under the the belief that that’s kind of their plan is to not bring in a Brook Lopez and to invest a lot of time into Quinton Post this offseason but I just don’t see him as a banger you know he’s not a banger he’s someone that can stretch the floor and shoot it yeah but I don’t know if you need a banger if you’ve got Draymond right you need someone who can block shots and I think Quinton Post although he has a long way to go defensively showed some promise in terms of standing tall being a big body in the middle and blocking the occasional shot like listen it’d be great if you could get Miles Turner or the Brook Lopez from four years ago but those guys are not available you might be able to get the Brook Lopez of now which is you know a better defender than Quentyn Post certainly but awfully old and slow and you you you’ve definitely got Quinton Post who even if he just stretches the floor the nice thing about Draymond and Jimmy is they help you solve some of the defensive problems to the extent that they exist right so I can see trying to live with that i I I just also see certainly if you’re putting Moody in the deal with all due respect to the wonderful two-way wigs Kaminga and Moody for Wiggins is a significant talent downgrade and it’s also two for one so you know you’re talking about an old team that you are taking youth and talent off of and I don’t know if that’s a great solution but it’s certainly an interesting one definitely definitely scratching the head right now wonder I mean there’s no way again just putting aside obvious Steve Kerr’s obvious preferences there’s no way Wiggins wouldn’t fit right i mean we know Wiggins would fit and and having less scoring responsibility than he had in his in his previous Warriors run would probably benefit him their defense would he be coming off the bench yeah where you start him at the two guard that would be an intense defensive lineup steph Wiggins Butler or you start Draymond at the five but we know they don’t really want to do that right um at least not for the bulk of the season so you’re getting some post starts maybe the occasional loon or trace if it’s a more of a physical team and with with less height i don’t know it’s it’s not a perfect answer but it’s an answer and it’s one that we know the Warriors at least have some previous inclination towards so a player like Brook Lopez obviously old slow also knows what he’s supposed to do right knows his role and will shut his mouth and go out there and do it now players that are that old you never know if at any point in the offseason they may just say “We’re done.” you know you may not have an opportunity to get them because retirements happen all the time of players that we thought had some more left in the tank and they just say “We’re we’re good to go here.” um in terms of the right veterans that the Warriors need and so much of what made this dynasty a dynasty along with the incredible drafting and and player development early was getting the right players like a Barbosa like a Spates like an older David West players that you know had success other places but weren’t superstars by any means but they knew what to do they came in they knew their role and they played their role very well the issue with going with someone this offseason like let’s say a a David West let’s use him as an example someone that was you know a collegiate all-American and that was an all-star and that had a great career for the Hornets and then comes to the Warriors and was still good still knew his role but like clearly at that point in his career he wanted a ring you know he he wanted to win himself an NBA championship and do whatever it took to uh fit the role that they were asking of him the issue is with this current team that the the Stephss of the world the Draymond Greens the Jimmy Butlers they’re now all the veterans so you kind of want to complement them with young hungry tenacious defenders like the Rockets have athletes whatever it may be so I use Obie Topphen as an example of someone that was somewhat boowo right the uh the Pacers got him from New York he wasn’t um terribly expensive by any means there are players like that out there that can kind of just come in and even though they they may have had the same exact numbers on the basketball reference page the the season prior they just fit a different role and uh it seems to to work out for all parties what like age range should the Warriors be looking for what types of contracts should they be looking for should they potentially be after a uh a player that’s dealt with some injuries but still has a lot of talent Allah Robert Williams like how do you feel about um the remaining nucleus of players that they should surround the the three stars that we know for c almost certain are going to be on this team at least to start next season yeah yeah I mean Obin is a funny example because let’s let’s just describe Obie Tophin somewhat vaguely right top 10 pick super athlete shows some flashes can’t really get consistent minutes or find a consistent role in one spot does that sound like anyone you know the difference of course being like uh the ceiling on Jonathan Kaminga is much higher so I you know to me what’s the point of going and getting some other team’s guy that hasn’t quite developed the way they wanted right if you want to roll the dice with a guy who hasn’t developed quite the way his team wanted him to for whatever reason how about the guy that just went for 30 a couple times in a playoffs for your team um to me if you’re trying to augment this group I get what you’re saying right like you’d love some youth but if you wanted youth it’s been on the roster and you’ve basically been choosing not to play most of it i mean Pajky accepted right so I I I think you want veterans and I think you want veterans you can count on and frankly those guys are usually not available for the resources the Warriors have to spend unless they’re pretty old so I think you’re looking at old guys you know and yeah I guess I guess health is a concern brook Lopez is 37 that is really old for a man that large um but you know whether it’s him or someone that more in the DeAnthony Melton mold right i think you’re looking for over the the the 30 and over set and guys who either you know you knew what they could do at some point and they’re trying to rehab their image and get back to that or they’re they’re just good players who’ve aged to a point where they’d rather take a slightly smaller contract and and compete for at least playoff spots if not titles i I don’t know who that is off hand like it’s not a great free It’s not a great free agent crop in any way it’s not great at the top and it’s not great for the Warriors purposes but it is but a lot of them are restricted right and teams have bird rights and that sort of thing and a lot of them are old and expensive and just out of the question but there are some good players in there i mean are you counting LeBron and Kyrie and James yes and James Harden yes i mean there are some Hall of Famers those are the three really and and they all have unique circumstances which obviously they’re not going to be Warriors but more to the point they’re likely staying with the teams that they’re already with right you know this off season there will be at least one report of of LeBron being tied to the Warriors there will and Durant too like it’s just going to happen it’ll probably be from uh it’ll be a what a a steam bomb is that what we call him brett Brett Stein from Clutch Points he’s on everything but uh uh uh yeah maybe um but listen Malcolm Malcolm Brogden is out there you know can I interest you in a really steady backup point guard who if he’s healthy can do a lot of things for you would he sign for that level same same sort of questions with Bruce Brown right um Tim Hardway with Bruce Brown yeah Tim Hardaway Jr right come come take a contract less than you might get elsewhere with your dad’s old squad and and compete for something um that that to me you know Carris Levert probably too young luke Canard is an interesting name he keeps going places and they never find a way to use him could Could he fit in the Warriors system he’s definitely a guy that can shoot it and pass it um for cheap well that’s the question all of those guys I just mentioned can make more than the Warriors can offer in all likelihood especially given that you know they’re near the top th those are top 15 free agents in this off season right so they’re they’re probably going to get higher financial offers there are teams with money the question is if I’m 33y old Tim Hardaway or 29y old Luke Canard who’s never really found a happy home do I want to try to make 14 to 18 million from the Hornets or the Nets or do I want to take nine from the Warriors if they can if they can get to that i think that’s the market they’re shopping in that’s how they got the Anthony Melton and Kyle Anderson last year and I think both of those guys showed that they could have had value in the right circumstances obviously it went the way it went meltton himself is worth considering i mean if you can get him on a cheap deal and he’s going to be ready for the start of the season which I don’t I don’t know where he’s at medically but it seems reasonable he got the ACL was pretty early last year i don’t know would you take another run on a guy that you know fits that you know does things you need but obviously has been a health concern his whole career i there’s not going to be much like our Miami Kaminga trade there’s not going to be a perfect answer but I do think there’s a handful of answers that if the Stars align could could work out well coming up what are the chances the Golden State Warriors would run this roster back maybe not identical but very close to it we’re going to debate that’s coming up who can stop Steph Curry hopefully we’ll never find out all right today’s episode’s brought to you by America’s number one sports book you official sports betting partner of the NBA i don’t know would you take another run on a guy that you know fits that you know does things you need but obviously has been a health concern his whole career i there’s not going to be much like our Miami Kaminga trade there’s not going to be a perfect answer but I do think there’s a handful of answers that if the Stars align could could work out well yeah the answer to me is yes but I would like to see them do other things first to make sure that that’s not their big splash of the off season and then that’s um something that you throw in there is a a nice billow candidate but your your plan this off seasonason can’t be hey let’s run this thing back let’s pick up Looney and and GP2 let’s because they can run this entire thing back right i mean they can bring back legitimately everyone they can say you know Spencer we we may or may not pay you bring in DeAnthony Melton and like there’s your squad right there warriors can do that they went what 23 and eight with Butler and company last season they they can go fishing at the deadline it may make more sense to do that to be honest with you and see how and listen with with Melton I think you know provided he’s on the floor you could raise that ceiling a little bit like that’s he could but that’s my issue if they bring him in and he’s been injured early and often for a long time now i mean he’s played a total of what 40 games the last couple of seasons um it’s always been a problem for him and and you know you hate to look at it that way but to an extent they have to and I think you’re probably right that would be a veteran minimum signing if he’s open to it um but yeah I I you know I guess here’s the problem right luke Canard who I mentioned last in that list of potential free agents like that’s kind of a pipe dream you know he’s coming off 14 million i think people around the league believe he still has something to offer he’s certainly a knockdown shooter like are the Warriors in a position given what we’ve seen since they got eliminated from the playoffs where guys will even look at them and say “Yeah it’s worth taking a a few less dollars a 29year-old guy like Luke Canard right it’s one thing if you’re Tim Hardaway but a 20 who’s also made some money in this league but a 29-y old guy like Luke Canard probably feels like his best years are right here in front of him do I want to bench roll with the Warriors for less money than I might make elsewhere because is my belief in their ceiling high enough and I just don’t know it’s so hard to know the answer to that because I can tell you what I think like I think the Warriors ceiling is pretty high i I don’t know how high their odds of reaching that ceiling is but I think they we’ve seen certainly with Butler if healthy these are a lot of ifs but if all the pieces are in place they can compete with anybody that being said I don’t know that 29-year-old Luke Canard looks at it that way i always wonder because you heard the reports like a couple years ago we were talking about it on 957 with uh a couple of our shows that MLB players may just not want to sign with the San Francisco Giants because of the what the the state of the city or the perception of the the city whatever it may be and uh there was a lot of talk surrounding that in my opinion as someone like Luke Canard that’s from Ohio that I don’t know if Canard has any experience with the Bay Area but that now has plenty of experience with the Bay Area I think it’s a great place to live especially if you have a little bit of cheese right that’s the thing right i mean I to me that whole conversation was do you want to live in the in the Bay Area or do you want to potentially live in you know Milwaukee and and make 9 million in Milwaukee or 8 million in in San Francisco like that that stuff to me I think it matters but maybe not truly I mean we hear players all the time that don’t even live in those places just kind of I mean I I think for most guys the very majority of guys if it’s not LA New York or maybe Miami doesn’t matter that much like I’m living in a mansion in a nice area where I don’t have much to worry about for largely other than you know criminals who specifically target NB NBA players uh and I you know what what does honestly what does any Golden State Warrior care what is happening in the Tenderloin like I just don’t I’m sorry I don’t buy it um and I think unless guys and I’m going to say this in the hopefully least political best way I possibly can but unless guys are operating from a position of overwhelming prejudice I would think they could care less about this the you know highly inaccurate reports on the state of the city um in the same way that I don’t think the taxes too you know California tax well now California taxes matter that’s different but guys go to LA all the time you know so they’re not prohibitive right like again if it’s not LA or New York and kind of Miami I don’t think it matters a whole heck of a lot to most players there are exceptions but you know it’s rare that the there’s the Andre Gadala who thinks about the impact Silicon Valley could have in his postcareer life right like that’s not how most of these dudes are operating right it’s largely about like what’s the what’s the basketball situation what’s the financial situation it’s it’s pretty much that straightforward amen this is Locked on Warriors we’re part of the Locked On Podcast Network your team every day find us on YouTube and wherever you get your audio 1. I'm done with Wiggs. Loved him for that championship run but as soon as he was paid, Wiggs disappeared. Wiggs is great when he wants to be but will be just as content to sit in the corner and do nothing.

  2. Poor Melton just turned 27. Lindy is 28,29! Kerr couldn’t do ish with Lindy and trusting Melton’s body! Nope
