breaking news here on Sports Center big trade in NBA it is not Kevin Durant the Grizzlies are trading Desm B to Orlando sources Tale ESPN Sham Sharania in return Memphis will get KCP Cwell Cantavius Cwell Pope Cole Anthony four unprotected first round picks including this year’s number 16 overall pick bane averaged 19 points this season he’s under contract four more years after signing a massive contract couple of seasons ago all right so with that let’s bring in our senior NBA writer Brian Win Horse he’s here wendy this seems like an awfully lot and certainly no disrespect to Desm Bane to trade for to get him what more can you tell us yeah let’s break this trade into two parts and focus on the Orlando side and the Grizzly side and I promise you the Grizzly side is more interesting but first we’re going to talk about Orlando the the Magic have needed more offense for a year and it was actually a little bit mystifying that they didn’t make a trade at midseason when they had a bunch of expiring uh money on their books when they wouldn’t have had to given up a player beyond this year um and didn’t do so and they really collapsed offensively down the stretch and were not a threat in the playoffs because of it so they traded for a guy in Desm Bane who over the last three f years has averaged about 20 points and shot over 40% he’s under controlled long-term contract plays both ends of the court a quality player and they also trade Cantavius Cwell Pope away you have to look at this trade not only is acquiring Desm B but they’re offloading the contract of Cantavius Callwell Pope he was a big free agent signing a year ago but he did not have a good year okay guys and um he’s owed $43 million over the next two years so part of what they’re paying with those picks is for Bane but also to offload what is viewed as a bad contract it is a rich you know thing to trade the 16th pick in this draft isn’t viewed is super expensive but unprotected 26 28 and 30 we have no idea what those teams are going to be that’s a big price but they’re paying for get rid of Cwell Pope and acquire bay and that’s what you have to understand now let’s turn the page to the Grizzlies what does this mean for the Grizzlies this is now what is being asked in the league because this is a rebuild trade okay uh while Cantaviaus calledw Pope has proven to be a a key piece of a championship contender twice in his career last season did not look like that and he has gotten older and has a big contract so this is a trade where the Grizzlies are are pivoting a little bit and you know it’s not an insane thing because you know if you look at the Western Conference and you look at how how tough it is to compete and you look at what Memphis like thinks about their hand it may be the time to do a little bit of a pivot there’s not almost anybody in the Western Conference who is really rebuilding right now everyone’s kind of got the gas put down including the Jazz the Jazz are intending to try to turn it up and so what this means is the next question is what about John Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr and and and I don’t know the answer to this this is something that we’re just started trying to figure out with this trade the whole league is is now going to investigate this and we haven’t heard from the Grizzlies yet and if I was at the Grizzlies press conference this is the number one question I would be asking i wouldn’t be asking about Cantavi called Wope i wouldn’t be asking about Cole Anthony i wouldn’t be asking about those four first round picks i’d be asking do you intend to extend John Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr both of whom are extension eligible this summer are you going to try to Is that what you’re doing now or are you pivoting the franchise so to me that’s the big story emanating out of this trade ok uh great perspective there but if you had to give up a couple of players in four unprotected first round picks to get Desm B what in the heck will you have to give up to get Kevin Durant well again I just want to point out it’s it’s I know that’s the headline and I get it and it is a steep price but they’re not just paying to acquire bane they’re also paying to offload Cwell Pope caldwell Pope’s contract at this point he just had arguably his his lowest output season of his career certainly in years and again he’s under contract for two years so if you just did a trade just trading Cwell Pope you would have had to pay with that with maybe a first round pick and a half so that’s part of it i do think it’s a little a little rich but I don’t think you can compare it straight to Durant i know that’s what people are going to leap to but you have to look at it on both ends of that of that spectrum ok well the good thing for the magic when you talk about Desmane really the only Western Conference players last season to average more points per game rebounds per game assist per game than Bane Nicole Yokic and LeBron James Brian initial reaction to this uh seems like a lot um let’s go ahead and start here with did the magic overpay for Desm Bane here i think we all know how terrible they were in shooting that’s obviously a huge need for them dead last in threes last season but is this a fair deal Doyle i I think it’s a perfect fit john here you have to say but he’s in the prime of his career which I always like i love paying guys there 32 33 he’s 26 years old as of this trade so he’s still hitting the prime of his career but Jordan you said it best the worst threep shooting team in the entire NBA was the Orlando Magic at 31% and you bringing a veteran presence who’s tough on defense but more importantly over the course of his career John has shot over 40% from three i’ve loved this Orlando Magic team for the last three years now last season they battled injuries with Polo and Franz both banged up but they need guys that can ultimately space the floor he’s in the prime of his career he is a perfect complimentary third or fourth best player i think this is an amazing fit for Orlando yeah multiple things can be true at once here jordan Tims absolutely right from a fifth perspective Desman Bane is perfect for the Orlando Magic because they do need shooting they do need scoring everybody knows how offensively challenged they’ve been and also Jamal Mosley’s going to love this dude cuz he plays defense at the other end of the floor and Jeff Weltman he’s been everybody’s sort of been waiting for the magic to take a big swing here i’m just a little surprised while we’re talking about two things being true at the same time that the big swing was on Desm Bane because ooh that’s a spicy a spicy price tag right mean like you’re giving up four first round picks and a pick swap for Desm B you’re telling me he couldn’t do better than Desm Bane on that i mean like look I think this is a situation where Zach Clim there’s a lot of uh questions in Memphis about which way Memphis was going to go because there’s been rumors about John Morant there’s been rumors about what’s going to happen with Triple J and his new contract we know that they fired their head coach Taylor Jenkins and brought in ok all of a sudden is like are they rebuilding on the fly what are they doing i think when the magic come to them with this offer for Desm B you go “Yes thank you very much we will take this.” That Phoenix pick in 2026 is very tasty and then I guess the magic thinking is the unprotected picks in 2028 and 2030 along with the lightly protected 20 29 swaps aren’t going to matter if they’re good but what if they’re not right i mean there’s a lot of things can change so I like it in a vacuum on paper for the magic it makes sense from a basketball perspective but boy from a team building perspective not so sure about it from the Magic love it for the Grizzlies yeah uh a great point and I think we’re all on the same page here great fit fills a huge need but a very hefty price tag there for Desmond Bane um John coming right back to you on this how much better does this actually make the magic you mentioned over 40% um from from three uh 10 for Desmond Bane that is um but how much closer are they to being an actual contender all right so from a basketball perspective Jeff Waltman decided hey let’s take a swing here desmond Van is a good fit he plays at both ends of the floor we’ve already talked about how offensively challenged they are there are very good defensive team there number three in defensive rating last year the Eastern Conference is up for grabs next year right you had the number one team uh the Cleveland Cavaliers they get bounced out in the second round and also Darius Garlands having surgery the Boston Celtics the previous defending champions no Jason Tatam for the year and also Jayen Brown just had surgery and they have to unplug one of likelys Poor Zengus or Drew Holly because of their cap constraints go down the roster you get to the Nicks the Nicks are still looking for a head coach and who knows what that looks like next year the Indiana Pacers are going to be right there congrats the Indiana Pacers on doing more with Lesk but then you get to the Bucks the Bucks are you know Janis right now says that he doesn’t want to go anywhere but that could change this is early June and you’re not going to have Dame Liller because he blew out his Achilles and on and on and on down uh the lineup in the Eastern Conference down the standings I like the Detroit Pist as an ascending team but the Magic are probably the only other team that you look like are maybe with the Raptors depending on if you squint and like you like what uh they’ve done Masiri has done there yeah I think the magic this does make the magic better the Eastern Conference is in flux but I don’t know that this takes them from hey you’re in the playoff mix to an instant Eastern Conference contender i I think it puts them in the top four i’ll take it a a step further i I do I think that they were really close heading into last year and then last year just a ton of injuries remember two years ago they took Cleveland to like an amazing seven game series and what the Cavs do last year the best record in the Eastern Conference unfortunately they had injuries in the postseason that’s what the magic had in the regular season to John’s point ID is totally up for grabs if you’re a magic fan Jordan you have two superstars young superstars stars whatever you want to call them guys that get you 25 a game in the NBA in po bank on Ron Wagner if you’re a Magic fan you got to love this they’re trying at least they’re bringing Des of his career you see his numbers he’s like super reliable he’s a great team guy did they pay too much for him absolutely but if you’re a Magic fan you got like man we’re actually trying to push all in and with Florida with no state income tax I think it becomes a desirable place if midway through this season you see the magic
