Coaching search chaos: 5 strikes, no Coach—Do the Knicks have any plan? | FIRST THINGS FIRST
So good, bro. Your reaction. He’s not wrong. I mean, I essentially said
that in a kinder, gentler way yesterday. I mean, in the
more Christian way. right, right. Berkeley not worried about that. But look, if Leon Rose and Wes
worldwide West, William Wesley are running this
thing, I have no doubt that they’ve got something going
on that hasn’t been reported. Because they don’t. Leon doesn’t talk to the press. And they’ve been made a lot
of moves that nobody reported, you in the past. So if they have
control, then I think they got something going on. But if Dolan’s in control. And I think he is because
I don’t know if you’re going to defend this or not. Nick but I don’t see
any other front office. I don’t see any reasonable front
office people doing this to ask about one coach, maybe two. Two is even a lot to ask
about a coach or two, though, that already have a job. That’s one thing. Maybe you have an inside track. Like, you know he wants out. He’s not happy there. What five. I don’t think they’re done. Five they’re not. I don’t think they’re done. They’re waiting for
the end of this finals. Rick Carlisle. Gagner win or
lose, one of them’s probably getting
the call as well. I think Ty Lue. If I’m Ty Lue. Ty Lue. Right Yeah like I have no doubt
honestly I really believe this. If Michael Malone and Taylor
Jenkins had not been fired, I bet you the Knicks would ask
for permission to talk to him. I’m not even playing. They’re out there, though. But we haven’t heard anything. Yeah, it’s. This is lunacy right now. Now, again, we only see
half of what’s going on. I am going to defend it. OK Nick Howe 5
because no one has. No one has explained
to me if you are OK with the Twitter
and talk show mocking that goes along with it. What is the downside to asking. And I disagree with
Charles Barkley, that you don’t fire a coach
without having a plan. The Nuggets and the
Grizzlies did know they. Yes they did. The Nuggets had a plan. Everybody knows David Adelman
was a good coach in the making. The hold on hold on
I agree with that. But do you think that the
Nuggets fired Michael Malone saying Adelman is
definitely our guy or because of the
run, the small run. They went on, they were
like, we’re firing him. And one of the reasons
maybe at this very moment is so he gets a
bit of an audition that the guy, the interim coach
for the Nuggets, whose last name starts with two I’s who I always
screw up, you know what I mean. He got a little
bit of an audition. I understand that
you see all the time. And we talked
about it yesterday. You see it all the time. I think teams have an idea
of what they want to do. And so is out there. And so is out there. And so is out there. And so that’s out there but
not coaching another team. So that’s kind of my point that
I think if there were a bunch of teams with openings
and it’s like, man, whether it’s
Johnny Bryan or Taylor Jenkins or Michael Malone. If we don’t activate
on those guys now, they’re going to get gobbled up. That’s not the case. We don’t think the
Thunder or the Pacers are going to fire their coach. We don’t think there’s
going to be a New firing. I know sometimes coaches
get fired out of nowhere during the offseason. It’s rare right. Like there’s Thibodeau
no no no I mean, that was a surprise into some
other firings would be hot. But the timing of it
was standard which is if a coach gets fired,
it’s typically within a day or two of the season ending. Is my point. Like, it would be weird for
a team that hasn’t played in a month to fire its coach. So the point that I am
making is, and you guys tell me what I’m missing. What if they have in
their back pocket. Listen, whether it’s
assistant Coach Johnny Bryant, whether it’s fired
Coach Taylor Jenkins, we’re the only head coaching
job available for those guys. So if we want to hire
them, we will be able to. What is the downside to calling
and asking about any of the best coaches in basketball. Tell me. Well I’ll give you a few. One, it looks like
whoever you hire was a fifth, sixth,
seventh, eighth choice. That’s number one. And that can shoot
down his credibility with the team players. So that’s number one. Number two. Four of these five guys
are not definite upgrades over Thibodeau. Thibodeau just had a great. And I was saying during
the season get rid of him if you don’t make a great run. They did make a great run. And now you fired him. Quin Snyder is no
definite upgrade. None of these guys
are except Udoka. Well agreed, but neither. But but the day he got
fired, you and I both said wouldn’t have done it. But understand it. Johnny Bryant’s not
a definite upgrade. But you would say like that
he brings something different that he has a relationship
with those players, the organization he brings. You’re looking for an offensive
change and guys that will play the deep into the bench. He brings both of those. Chris Finch might as well. But I guess the
point I am looking at these as separate entities. The decision to fire Tom
Thibodeau, which I said I wouldn’t have done, but
I found I understood it. I think you were in a
similar boat that so put. I’m not trying to relitigate. And I don’t think
you guys are either. The decision to fire Thibodeau. None of us thought when they
made that decision that they had lock stock guaranteed
who their next coach was going to be. I think we figured they would
do what most teams did, which is around a bunch of interviews,
a coaching search, and then hire someone. So they made the decision to
fire Thibodeau to your point about if it cuts undercuts the
credibility of the players, I’ll buy that. But I don’t think
there is much downside other than media mockery
to being like, hey, can we interview Quin Snyder. Can we interview Jason kidd? Can we interview those guys. Like, you’re looking
at me like I’m crazy. What is the downside. Well, I would ask
them, why don’t you. Here’s my question. I’ll throw it back to you. Hey, I think having it be
embarrassing is something. Maybe it’s the. Maybe it’s undercutting your
authority with the team. I just feel like it’s
an unprofessional way of doing things. Yes You there’s there’s no
real downside to wearing flip-flops to a meeting. It just doesn’t
feel professional. Unless you are, of course,
in a flip-flop company. And I actually think
it is appropriate. Why don’t you call any of
the championship coaches. Call, call Steve Kerr. Doc Rivers, Nick. Nurse, Mazzulla. Spoelstra, SPO. Why do you want to
just call everybody. Well, so like if you’re saying
there’s no problem I think that Kerr I think that they are
not calling anyone that they are 100% certain
they are not going to be allowed to interview. I don’t think anyone that
they have asked on this list, except for the Udoka
thing, surprised me. But there was the the. But so I don’t think
they’re going to call. So I don’t think
they’re going to call. But your argument what’s
the downside right. Why not. They’re 0 for 5. So be 0 for six. Call Steve Kerr. No Well there’s
you’re right it would be similar lack of downside. But if you’re 100%
certain you’re not going to get the interview. There’s also no upside. I don’t think they have
asked to talk to anyone. They were 100% certain
they wouldn’t get. As far as the other names
you mentioned, Frank Vogel, am I wrong. He doesn’t have a job. They don’t have to call anybody. They could. But I’m saying my thing, Doc
Rivers, I don’t think they they think I think
a lot of people are questioning if he’s
a really good head coach. I’m just saying those are
the championship coaches that are out there or have jobs. I think it’s odd that they
fired Thibs because he couldn’t get them to the next level. And there’s a collection
of coaches that have an NBA championship
ring at home, and they haven’t called them. I think that’s odd. I mean, I don’t find
that as odd as I think that they are saying who
they think the best coaches are. I think Billy Donovan, I’m
not a Billy Donovan guy. They must be. I am a Quin Snyder guy. No but Snyder. Yeah, I think Quin Snyder
is a really good coach.
Nick Wright, Kevin Wildes, and Chris Broussard react to Charles Barkley’s comments on the New York Knicks’ coaching search. With five teams denying permission to interview their candidates, the crew discusses whether the Knicks truly have a plan in place—or if the chaos proves Barkley right.

Chris's face when Nick started explaining his position is freaking priceless 😂😂😂
They are going to hire Rick Brunson
Promote Rick Brunson! He's already GM
This post season has been a rough one for Nicks NBA takes
That tie doesn’t work
Nick looks stupid trying to defend the Knicks here. There’s a reason why teams never do this. It’s ridiculous.
Never fire a coach, unless you have a better one lined up.
This making Thibs look good lol
playing devils advocate for a stupid argument is such a waste of time
These guys have to learn how to pronounce Thibodeau's name correctly. Otherwise their credibility should be questioned.
Brou be ripping Nick a new one
Dear Nick. You are not good at this. It baffles me that these mediocre talking heads have jobs. I’m a lawyer, why don’t you give me a job talking sports?
Wright got cooked on this one
I appreciate Nick disagreeing just to keep this interesting, but it’s a struggle
Its fun how everyone fully understands that owners are dangerously erratic little tyrants, who shouldnt be anywhere near the operation of something as fundamentally unimportant as a sports franchise, but somehow that never translates into people rejecting rule by those same people – either through directly electing little tyrants up and down state and federal systems, or by allowing the biggest spenders to simply dictate what policies are and are not allowed via campaign funding.
Take the feeling that watching Dolan obliterate a good team for no reason, and with no plan, and apply it to how you view rich people and their corrosive influence on governance and our world.
What a stupid argument
It’s going to be Griffin
Like i said knicks shot themleves in the foot
I’m confused on how everyone sees a problem with Nick’s take, and I’m not even a Knicks fan. What is wrong with asking to speaking with opposing head coaches? If you run a business, and you’re competitor is doing really good, and you notice that the manager is a really good manager. Would you not want to ask that manager, hey wanna work for me? It’s no different. Sure it looks silly. But why on earth would you want to hire a fired coach? They got fired for a reason. Taylor Jenkins couldn’t get his team to act mature, why would teams want to hire him. I’m just confused on how it’s a bad take
Unlucky when you got dealt the "Defend the Knicks" in a debate show …
Brou is so wrong here. It's crazy
Nick kissing Dolan's behind so that he doesn't get lifetime banned from MSG is ridiculous. Send him a box of chapstick so that he's got soft lips as he puckers up for Dolan.
Nick you're doing too much and your argument isn't even coherent
It don’t matter if they don have a plan if the goal is to win the championship why keep a guy that you know you can’t win with
Dolan gone from. We’re right there to, back at the staring depressing days again. 😂😂😂 you can’t make this stuff up
why would a team ask for doc rivers or frank vogel
I love how Nick doesn't understand shame and embarrassment. It's so on-brand.
Its like they divorced from their wife and asking her friends if they want to be together. Those teams arent budging
You don't fire your coach without a plan when it's the best season you have had in 27 years.
Tell em bro!!!
So when the knicks hire their next coach theyll say congratulations you were our 8th choice. 😂😂😂
There you have it, folks. If you ever wondered why Kansas City Nick isnt a GM somewhere, heres your answer.
Why did they talk about this for almost 9 minutes? It's like they say a lot, but they don't really say anything at all.
Well Nick lost this segment.
People that defend thibs just don’t really understand the X’s and O’s Of bball. If you think thibs was a good coach, google search bball bench player rotation, google drop coverage, then google why you can’t play drop coverage against 86% of all nba players. I have nightmares of halli and siakam taking practice 3’s while Kat and Mitch sink all the way under the basket…..
We didn't think thibs was gonna get fired either Nick
Nick got owned in this segment lol take the L
replacing Tibs for Donovan would be like replacing KAT for today's Barkley
Nick u been off your game lately! Come on back to making simple sense, u tripping
Knicks are just completel foolishness and will offer thibs his job back 😂
Wildes made a good point until he said doc rivers 😂
Nick just got completely cooked on this debate
Nick relates to the desperation he feels in the goat debate
