A Smith on first take on Friday had this to say about Giannis if he only wins one title during the course of his career It’s one of the greatest players that ever played the game Over the last four years minimum 200 games Giannis second in the league 30.4 points per game Fifth in the league 11.7 rebounds per game fifth among qualifiers at 58% from the field and nine allNBA selections in his career nine all-star selections and top 10 finishes in league MVP voting nine times And he does and he has more of that in postseason series wins That’s unacceptable It’s not his fault I’m not in any way pointing to him or what he’s not doing I’m saying that you don’t look at somebody that dominant that fantastic with that kind of fire in his belly to compete on a night in night out basis and all you have is one championship to show for it It’s a very interesting take I I may have It’s very aggressive take Well very aggressive I look at Giannis and I say has he done everything in his power to try to win another title my answer is yes That guy does not cheat the game in any way shape or form Agreed I believe the Milwaukee Bucks to their credit have tried a lot of things to try to help him win a second title They went out there and got Dame Lillard out of nowhere It has not worked And unfortunately Dame’s health is really been a hit They traded Chris Middleton when he was banged up I don’t know if Kyle Kosma is the one that I would have traded for but they’ve tried around him I don’t know if I look at this Giannis Bucks situation and say it’s underachieving considering I feel like there’s been max effort from from player and organization to try to get a second one It just hasn’t worked No it hasn’t worked And now the question becomes whether or not Milwaukee is the best place for him And we’re all pointing to other franchises that have assets that would still be a title contender if Giannis were to be traded there And I think the pressure now shifts to Giannis in terms of making that decision This is somebody that you know has been described by people at this company as loyalty being one of his being a part of his brand And so I understand like you want to stay where your basketball home is But at the same time if winning at the highest level is your top priority then can you be a player that we say has done everything you can to win a championship if you don’t at least consider and potentially go to one of those other destinations that we’ve pointed to over the last couple of months yeah it’s a tricky spot because like can you label someone that’s quote unquote only won one title as an underachiever when that someone is one of the greatest players to ever live and he brought it and he brought a title to the Milwaukee Bucks And Pat I want you to jump in on this in a second I just want to set this up though So I look at it and say are you in a destination market while I love the state of Wisconsin I went to school there Milwaukee is not a destination market for free agents Okay When you’re a onetam guy and you want a title in a non-destination market for free agents I don’t know how I can look at you and say you’re an underachiever If he was on the Lakers and had the exact same career I think we could look at him and say his teams around him and with him as the focal point underachieved Well you say about LeBron with the Heat it’s a compliment You think they underachieved in your mind they underachieved That’s in your your opinion They got to four only only one two right that first one is ridiculous they didn’t achieved okay destination market non one team guy LeBron James Giannis is not in a destination market and has won a championship and he stayed with one team I don’t look at Giannis as an underachiever and it is interesting if we’re going to call Giannis an underachiever then that means we have to call Jokic an underachiever he gets different treatment I’ve been saying this for months like I and I and I don’t know that we can call Jokic an underachiever he’s been the player in basketball the last half decade I the only difference I would say is I believe that that Giannis’s team has done more to help him than Jokic’s team has done to help him Like they haven’t since they won a title they haven’t tried to do anything Think about it What and and conversely the Bucks went out Denver hasn’t tried Yeah What have they done they they paid Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr They thought those they thought they thought that those guys were on the ascent They thought that there was more to come in terms of their overall growth Turns out they were wrong but I’m not going to say they didn’t try Look at the contracts they gave those guys Well they they like like the Bucks they may have been wrong in some of their moves Yes Pat you think Giannis is an underachiever yes I do Uh because of how great the Milwaukee Bucks have been The fact that he’s only even been to one finals makes him an underachiever And Joic as well We look at Aaron Rogers as an underachiever in the same market He played for the Packers for whatever it was 13 years or whatever and only won one Super Bowl only went to one Super Bowl We call him an underachiever You can be a Hall of Famer and still underachieve I don’t know about I don’t know if that’s apple to apples in the NFL It’s more of a democratized process in terms of talent acquisition It’s different Like being able to get players in the NFL is not as hard as being able to get players in the NBA And wait a wait a second So you changed the argument a little bit here Pat I saw you tweet at Pacella 20 this weekend about this The idea of Hall of Famer and underachiever makes more sense to me than champion and underachiever because your his example was about Joel Embiid is going to be a Hall of Famer and Pat as a Sixers fan says “Well his time with Philadelphia feels like it’s underachieving.” Yeah Because I have more rings than he does right or I have the same amount of rings as he does So I think it’s a little different when you’re a champion versus a Hall of Fame Yeah One ring is not enough in the NBA Like who’s a one ring player That’s my point He’s four Come on But even if he gets another ring he’s not going to be on the Mount Rushmore basketball team Correct He’s not So how So how are you calling him an underachiever to be honest he’s not one of the top that great You said you think you said you think he could be a Mount Rushmore He could be one of the four greatest players to have ever played in the NBA No you’re out have we not had conversations about KD ever ever since he’s left the Warriors as being aver He’s not a one team guy Okay that that matters But like LeBron Lakers fans look at LeBron as an underachiever If he only wins one he’s on the Lakers as a non one team guy in a destination market As long as you’re in a market that we care about all the markets but a market that like most people is not here today St Louis is a phenomenal baseball market Yes Is it a destination market no for baseball players in free agency it’s the Dodgers it’s the Mets it’s the Yankees right we understand that But St Louis historically is better than most of those teams The point that I’m making is when Giannis chooses to be a one team guy and he chooses to be a one team guy in a non-destination free agent market then I think that we can look at the one championship as worth a lot I don’t like when people say like “Oh Dirk’s one is worth more than LeBron’s four or LeBron’s two in Miami.” That kind
