How Cooper Flagg changes EVERYTHING about the Mavericks future | DLLS Mavs Podcast
it’s flag day here in Dallas how Cooper flag changes everything for the Dallas Mavericks we’ll get into all that more coming up next on the DLS Mavs podcast hey what’s up DLSS Mabs Nation it’s your man Kevin Gray alongside Mavericks beat writer Tim Ko and our national NBA insider Mark Stein we of course are DLLS Mass appreciate you joining us here on this terrific Tuesday afternoon got a big show coming up here today we’ve got our mystery guest here on the DLS Mass podcast they will be joining us coming up in our next segment beginning at 12:15 will they be wearing blue will we will see if they’ll be wearing blue specific shade of blue that’s right that’s right it’s kind of crazy we appreciate all of you already in the chat trying to guess who the mystery guest will be uh you will find out here in about 13 14 minutes also it’s Flag Day here in Dallas as Maverick’s presumptive number one overall pick Cooper Flag that’s right that’s right we got to use the correct language until it’s official coming up on June 25th which marks Stein we are just eight days away from the NBA draft where the Mavericks of course hold the number one overall pick before we go any further Tim Ko what’s going on uh I’m doing fantastic i played basketball again last night which means uh there are parts of my body yelling at me especially with the knees how about say which parts are yelling at you the loudest oh oh by far the knees okay you know we uh we live to fight another day but you’re good i’m good okay i’m good i had an uneven showing but uh not as good as a couple weeks ago but Okay okay the three-pointer was a little off this time oh the three-pointer was way off did quite a bit more inside the arc but it was it was up and down well it sounds like you need to go practice on the uh the papa shot uh courtesy of our guy i that’s not helping it completely messes up my form it feels like uh feels like baseball player uh in the home run derby it’s completely different completely different in fact I I blame the papa shot like your basketball game to a home run an elite Major League Baseball home run hitter is that what is that what I get gleaned from that last sentence uh I mean I don’t think they could do what I do i think they I could do what they do stein what’s going on how we doing i’m just trying to process the last few things that Danny Wolf Jr over here just hit us with not Danny Wolf Jr what is going on today’s a really cool day we got a surprise guest that I am incredibly excited for i’m I’m saddened that the Carllustrator is not here he had family business important family business to attend to but this would be this is going to be his kind of show he’ll be watching the replay he will be very excited and it is it is it’s flag day cooper flag is going to be in Dallas today maybe a little bit even still tomorrow oh okay we’ll get some details or as Bobby would like to say some deets uh when it comes to Cooper Flags Day uh here in Dallas but it’s also a big week here at the All City Network specifically of course here at DLLS Sports as it is spirit week here for us on the DLS Mavs podcast and for all of our shows in fact we’ve got a cool partnership that we’ve got going on all week long as part of All Cities Spirit Week we’re teaming up with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America an incredible group creating life-changing mentorships for kids across the country we’ve set a goal of $10,000 but of course we’re looking to smash right through that and we need your help to do it when it comes to getting to that $10,000 goal you can donate using the link in the video or description and if you want to make an even bigger impact you can also sign up to become a big by visiting bbbs.org/allcity let’s do something meaningful together this week again visit bbbs.org/allcity to be part of a great cause when it comes to the Big Brothers Big Sisters um Mr crazy I have an update for you uh Bobby Krillis still would like to be your big brother uh if you are still willing to have him as your big brother just in case uh you were wondering but let’s jump into it gentlemen Cooper Flag is here the Duke sensation Jason Kid the kid from Duke making his visit to Dallas in fact no other teams he’s visiting except for Dallas because of course we all know you all know what’s going to be happening on June 25th uh Mark I’ll start with you what further can you tell us and fill us in when it comes to u the specifics of Cooper Flags visit and what we could be looking forward to as he has his day here in Dallas look I don’t know how much we will see of it i would imagine that the Mavericks would there would be some sort of social media component that we get to see a tweet here and there i’m told there is going to be a light onc court component i believe don’t hold me to this i think that is more likely tomorrow than today today is get to town meet everybody talk to everybody i know there’ll be a big dinner as well i mean this is all largely ceremonial cooper flag is one zillion% going to be the number one pick on June 25th i mean you can already hear Adam Silver say it the Dallas Mavericks with the number one overall pick in the NBA draft select Cooper Flag of Duke University and of course you know Adam Silver went to Duke so he’ll be smiling even more broadly than usual um but yeah it’s it’s like it’s eight days away so on one hand it still feels a long way away and then on the other hand it’s almost here a lot of business to be get done Tim Ko between now and the NBA draft uh just your thoughts on how Cooper Flag really kind of changes kind of the whole dynamic and feel of what this season has obviously been with we know the the trade of course that happened the change Jason kid that happened on February 1st but now it feels like for Mavericks fans I hope that there’s a little bit of light toward the end of the tunnel now we’re getting closer to the NBA draft potentially so last year the US men’s national team hired Mauricio Pochettino as the uh head coach of the program and been some up and downs but uh Pochettino he’s an Argentinian man uh has has had a lot of highlevel club jobs this his first time coaching nationally um or in national team in the international game he has this whole thing where he wants to he wants to feel and touch the players in his words and there’s just something different there’s something special there’s something that you can’t receive that you can’t uh experience just by watching film just by watching you know whatever you know the the 17 different streaming services that you have to own to to connect to all the various uh leagues and and uh you know lower level leagues and all these different places there is just a a quintessential uh you know learning curve not in a bad way but a a learning curve of coach meets player coach sees player coach uh you know is able to directly communicate talk to and and witness what a what a player is capable of uh feel their aura figure out what they’re all about and to the extent that every single head coach is like Mauricia Po Pochettino I’m going to tell you right now not a lot are quite like that but there is something really special about just having a person uh having a player in person having them on your courts in your pra practice facility uh having conversations with you having them be able to say “I like this i don’t like this uh I know this i don’t know this.” And really that’s what it’s all about dallas knows they’re taking Cooper Flag with the number one overall pick they have ideas about what else they’re going to do this summer they may even have well not that anybody would tamper but they may even have you know conversations let’s say internally that they hypothetically might have with other teams about various moves with agents about players who would hypothetically fill uh various roles on next season’s roster but getting Cooper Flag in having these conversations with him having them now beginning to understand what he wants what he likes where he sees himself what he believes uh is is best for him in a franchise on a basketball court these are things that you have to start learning and this is the day that you start learning those things it’s not to say that everything is built around Cooper flag 100% obviously Dallas is in a position to win and they’re going to try to be winning and they have a three three-year window that they’re aiming to be a championship contender and hopefully win a title and Cooper is going to fit with that beautifully but this will be Cooper Flags franchise this is going to be his city if all goes according to plan uh this is somebody who could be here two decades and this is where that starts this is where you as an organization have to gearing your have to start lining up your mindset and your mentality and your approach to basketball on the court and off of it with this guy who’s coming in who is going to have the gravitational pull of a number one pick of a superstar of a generational talent of somebody who is only going to get better from this moment and that’s a really exciting time for for a franchise and uh it’s the time where whatever uncertainties you had whatever things still need to be decided about the summer and the offseason to come uh you can kind of you can kind of start to you know compare them with this idea of of the most important addition you’re going to have this summer bar none the most important addition is going to be Cooper Flag and you can start to take those comparisons and those expectations and those ideas and you can compare them with the guy that you see right in front of you so how does Cooper Flags arrival change the perception of this team not just now but going forward into the future with everything that this franchise has been through over the last several months changes everything i I mean I I think we still have to see i mean like it’s been tangible that he’s going to be a Mav for almost a month now but like I mean I’m I’m going to be fascinated to just go to summer league and and hear what other teams think and say about Cooper Flag the Maverick and just what that’s going to I mean I can’t imagine he plays more than a game or two because that’s kind of become the norm for top stars but I think he will play at least one game hopefully two and like we’ll will start to get we’ll start to get that picture but I mean you know I have not met Cooper Flag myself i’ve never spoken to him um but you know kind of the the rumbles I guess that have gone around is that he is excited about coming to a team where he’s not going to a team that is you know a 20- win team that he has to just carry you know he’s going to a team that that if everyone is healthy should be able to be competitive so um I want to hear I want to hear from him too i mean I want to I want to see what it’s like to kind of get get a real pulse and vibe from how he feels about it well I want to hear from our special guest are we loud can we hit an can we hit an early break here should we But should we like I see people in the chat asking for hints should we give a hint i mean I would just say Tanner’s already given some Tanner’s basically giving it away tanner’s given a hint um I would just say absolute royalty will soon be joining us on this set very much so i think that’s a very fair hint and no Mark Stein is not referring to Roman Reigns or John Cena i am uh not that he would know who any of those two individuals are i’m confident you guys will be excited you will be very excited uh to see who we reveal as our mystery guest here on the DLS Mask podcast in fact Tanner let’s not wait any longer coming up next here on the DLS Mavs podcast our mystery guest ninth overall pick in the 1981 NBA draft and nowadays the vice president of corporate relations for your Dallas Mavericks he is Maverick’s royalty and legend Rolando Blackman joining us here podcast thank you very much my goodness this is this is super welcome to the show thank you super to be here getting an opportunity to One of my favorite players ever thank you bobby Krell is going to be very excited when he sees all this um Abby you’ll get a closeup of the uh the social media action here on the DL Mass podcast uh as well uh let’s have some fun how are you good to see you and good to be here with you today well just a just a good opportunity for me all the way around too i’m uh you know down there working with the Mavericks of so many different great things to do but it’s a more of a more of an easy pace there’s no more traveling and running around all over the place so it’s uh it’s an easy life and I get a chance to see more of Dallas and interact with Dallas which is exactly what I want i I’m I’m really glad you got the memo uh we all got this kind of navy blue going on right here uh so I was all I was just in danger this morning as I was going through my suits just going through my suits and and I didn’t know exactly if I was going to put the tie on or break down there you go so so so so I just picked out the little math gear that kind of a thing casual relaxed so and I’m so happy that I was right that was a good thing oh absolutely you have held a zillion roles for this franchise on the floor off the floor on the bench you name it how stressful was it to go on the lottery day on May 12th with I mean now you know you you’ve showed us you you are the lucky charm this franchise didn’t know it had but how like how stressful was that good luck charm’s got to be something you know something the biggest thing about the biggest thing about something that’s special when you get a chance to to to be a part of something special in that way too rick Welsh gave me a call while I was uh in the office and show I saw it on I saw a little call and I missed the call then I got a little text afterwards saying that we’d like you to represent the Mavs at the at the draft in Chicago and I looked at it I said “Oh my god that’s so super fantastic opportunity to do that.” But then he said “But uh we only have a 1.8 chance of uh of doing it of getting that done.” And I wrote back to him we have the text i wrote back to him 1.8 chance and it says last second i said well if it’s a last second shot then I’m your man you know I’m your man to go get that so the important thing is that it was just a spirit that’s all the spirit the aura of having having that kind of a stuff done and uh I just felt that way as soon as I got to the to the stadium out there in Chicago just a great feel of try to be positive whatever is happening whatever’s going on and like anything else I got there two hours earlier anyway and was looking around the stadium the format like something like something was going to happen and uh my goodness it it surely did and you kind of started to walk through it kind of walk us through what that day was like on May 12th as you’re preparing to represent the team and obviously we know what happens as the night goes on the Mavericks win the number one overall pick mark Tatum the deputy commissioner hands you that card walk us through what that day was like and the feelings as you’re uh representing the team on that day the most important thing is as I as I as the day opens up you know I’m I’m I’m pretty meticulous on when I have to be somewhere very very much so too so I have everything down as to how to get there where to get there how I’m going to go what time I’m going to get there so I got there two hours before the draft opportunity started and I was in the stadium and and lo and behold other people were there also too so they were feeling like me to get there early and guys were up there messing around and the first pick goes to the Chicago Bulls and the sec the second and I was sitting in the background just like this was a basketball game like man you’re not getting no damn first pick i don’t know what why you need to get off that stage and that’s exactly how it was just the feel of the whole thing and we went to the back room and you could see everybody looking at each other just people are milling around but it’s not a situation where everybody is talking about their life stories asking about their family it’s almost like a game you’re looking at people trying to look look them over and it was that kind of a feel people people trying to put makeup on you and put all this kinds of stuff and you’re you’re trying to get your space but you’re trying to think of the things that you want out of this whole thing you you want the number one pick that’s that that’s what’s in your heart and in your mind and you’re and you’re trying to make sure and and gravitate to that kind of a spirit that’s the kind of spirit I had just to being able to try to think about this 1.8 so number one is what we want and and and it gets serious you know it gets serious in that kind of a way when they bring us all out we have an opportunity to get on out we sit at the deis and we’re putting those things together i all I was thinking about was we need the number one pick we need the number one pick so when when when they started to to talk and go through that whole thing and we had gone past 11 and they said since the the Mavericks weren’t called now we’re at the top four the funny part for all of you to understand is that during the ESPN time timeout we only had 50 seconds to get off get everybody off and they because the other people lost they unceremoniously got them off the stage it was it was all it was almost like a Pettis Bridge riot you know like like pushing everybody else off like get off get move get off the stage moving them off the stage and they had the top four pick people picked there so at as as as as we sat there nobody was looking at each other everybody was thinking about the number one pick because I had the coach from San Antonio right here right next to me and the important factor was it it started Mark came right past and swoop by the number four pick goes to the Charlotte Hornets number three will go to the Philadelphia 76ers once he said 76ers it was a old shit moment it it was it was a oh okay and then you could see you could and then it was like and the second pick goes to the San Antonio Spurs and that mean I tell you like right now look look at my hand look my look look look at that i mean the the the the the euphoric feeling that you feel to being able to to to to to have an opportunity for not only for me the franchise our fans it was a it was a complete rebirth a complete renewal because you knew that the number one pick was going to have a give us a chance for a reset let’s give us a chance to move forward it give our fans a really an opportunity to feel good about the team instead of when I was parking over at Co-America and walking over and people are looking at me like “What’ you guys do what’s wrong with this stuff?” I’m I’m I’m walking around Trader Joe’s because I love Trader Joe’s to go get my food and I’m putting my stuff and and I’m in a line and people are like “What’ you guys do what happened with that?” And I’m in the line and I’m looking over the line and I got to start in the middle of the line like everything was a positive piece we’re trying to get the team better we’re And I’m thinking to myself I’m in the middle of Trader Joe’s explaining to to people online trying to get out of here to to being able to get to to the food that I have out of here you can tell that everybody was in it everybody wanted this thing to be positive and and because we got the number one pick everybody got a chance to take a deep breath again and have a renewal thoughts of positivity and to being able to move forward in that way so it was it it was it was incredibly incredibly special to uh to stand up there next to Mark uh Tatum and uh and uh point at Rick that’s who I was pointing I was pointing at Rick and and uh the number one pick uh who whomever that’ll be was right behind Rick was right behind Rick and it was it was just a thing that I knew that it was for all of us it’s a lot something sometimes when you win some and it’s for more than just you it’s it is it is the it is the best feeling ever when it’s for a group instead of for an individual and for all of us now to to to live in this positivity it’s a special special piece of the puzzle all the way around even when I go back to Trader Joe’s it’s Have you Have you had the lime made with jalapeno matter of fact uh I don’t touch anything with any jalapeno whatsoever as people people who know me know people who know me and know this kind of stuff i don’t see see my mouth i don’t want my mouth burning at any time i don’t want any burns no nothing like that i don’t want anything burning my mouth i like flavor but don’t give me anything hot at all well that that was that was my last Trader Joe’s purchase over the weekend in fact that I was like “Oo okay hey this has Jada Jones so you’ve been with the Mavericks uh you know as you know in various roles as long as you’ve not been something like that did you know the odds did you know the not the odds the history of Dallas the fact that this team has never once moved up in the lottery i knew it i knew it i mean when you when I was going up there I knew who had been there all the way throughout and and having the opportunity to to just come back in disappointment actually and not being able to get the pick that we wanted so when when when you go up in there you’re trying I mean you’re trying to you’re trying to put the spirit together it’s just like a game you’re trying to go in with the mental thought process of what you want you can’t be I don’t know i don’t know you have to go in with that so I I’m telling you walking around and trying to create that aura trying to feel like we we want the number one pick and that’s what we want but I’m telling you uh fellas I’m telling you when it starts happening Yeah and to be inside of that aura and it and it actually starts to happen boom coming down boom top four unceremoniously take off all the guys who didn’t win get off the stage and and then Mark comes out and starts incrementally going down the line it’s just a it’s just the most wonderful feeling that you could ever have i I was telling uh friends of mine also too just to being able to scientists do all kinds of things but to being able to bottle that feeling and sell that sell sell shots of of of that feeling it is it is the most wonderful thing ever because it’s because it’s an allconsuming feeling you seem happier now than you did that night but it’s but you know what you know you know what it’s it’s a it’s a we thing when whenever something is a we it’s an extended happiness it’s it it it continues to live and it continues to live in volume because when I’m thinking of all the fans that were that were going back and forth and uh and and they were protesting and all this kinds of stuff and going through that kind of thing they had their thought process and and like anything else people can protest what they’d like to protest because it’s important that they get a chance to to speak their mind and really have the opportunity to say how they feel you know what I mean that’s that that’s that’s their thing but what’s important for us and all of us and them together is to being able to give them a chance to see the future in a positive way and to come together in that kind of a way too because you can’t have you cannot have negative vibes inside of an arena man it’s a it’s a very very important thing because we there’s a reason you play a home game sure it’s it’s it’s a big deal it’s not small thing it’s a big deal you get an extra you get an extra volume of spirituality and when you’re connected with the fans in that way and they’re yelling and screaming you you get you get that extra surge and that extra surge could be the difference in being able to have the energy the thought process to being able to do something special in that essence so that’s why it’s so so so important to being able to have these things be positive not only for them but also for us as an organization and all all of us together it was a big deal i’m telling you I I I I left that I left that stadium uh did the interviews and I mean I I was walking I was walking light it was a light walk it was a It was right next door and it was a tremendous feeling to go through go through there get back to the hotel until I got back to the hotel and I knew I was leaving early that morning closed the door and just basked inside of my room of of the of the wonderment not only for uh the thing to be a part of the number one but also the fans i knew all of us everybody in the organization was going to benefit from it then it’s going to be something really really positive and plus the number one guy for for this year he could play he could play so he could play so it’s not like he’s he could play we’re not gonna be telling stories about him he could he could actually play i’ve I’ve watched I’ve watched uh that person play I’ve watched uh that person play the whole year and u once again it’s it’s a it’s existential it’s something that’s very different than the others there’s a one and there’s a two that kind of a thing it’s not like oh you I’m close to him i’m the No you’re one and now wait 10 feet please and then let this guy go because he can actually play he’s not like the guy we had before sure because that that that guy was a that that guy was a as a was an offensive soant very very special also can you can’t fool with that and play with that or I’m not going to sit here and and and fool around like oh he was just No he he he was special a special player yeah so now you replace that with some of the other entities other pieces that you want being able to do that because he’s a great defensive player he can he can jack of all trades he can show he can shoot the basketball he can do all kinds of things but at the end of the day we’ll see as to how he melds in with this team being able to put it together but don’t be expecting don’t be expecting that other magician that kind of a thing don’t be expecting that that’s not that’s not what this is there’s always a change in the entity and to make sure that it’s a positive hit for what we want to do and come as a team to being able to move move forward but but the dude can play so it uh it’s a great thing for us too i don’t I can’t imagine being 18 18 years old won’t be 19 till December till December you know what I mean and then be able to play like this so we’ll see how things work out and how things are handled as far as that’s concerned all of us are out of that now well you got you got our fans ready to run through a brick wall with the the positive vibes and the positive feelings uh as we get ready for the NBA draft just eight days us here live in studio before we uh continue with the math discussion I mentioned something going into the break do you know what happened 31 years ago today has something to do with a former team of yours one of the other team that you used to play with it’ be 1994 mhm 17 and 17 no you No not game seven your Knicks were playing the Houston Rockets of course in the NBA finals and a certain former NFL player was being chased in the on the high that was 31 years ago today the chase happened 31 do you remember any like as obviously you were playing you know sir his name Al al some somebody some the guy that was driving the car and OJ’s in the back and all this kind of stuff alings Al yeah Al exactly driving through the whole place and police cars are following them and we’re and we’re sitting there like you know sitting there looking on TV as to what’s what’s going to happen here are they going to stop the car going through that and I’m thinking to myself hey man this is the finals it’s the NBA finals nba finals so it was it was it was just like anything else i was just curious if you remembered that day i remember I remember when being told now it’s fresh in my mind the box should have stayed closed though but okay exactly exactly you were a Nick but I mean you have basically been a Maverick for more than four decades what did you think when you were drafted here what did you think about the Mavericks about Dallas like what what did you what did a young Rolando Blackman imagine when you know it was a special it was a special time for me too and I’ll go through I’ll go through a little bit bit and piece of that whole thing too as as as I as I was drafted as I as a draft was going through I wanted to make sure we understood that Mark Aguire got drafted first and I was sitting there and Mark passed by and I looked at him and said looked at him and said hello he was like same team same team and he’s passed the same team same team but you would do and he just walked by he didn’t stop or anything so far as that’s concerned because I was thinking that I had a chance to go into Atlanta at number four m but the important factor is that as we all know today that you scouts who were scouting made a huge mistake and that’s your fault because you didn’t understand what was happening and of course you didn’t follow the sequencing because you did you would have understood that going through the whole summertime and putting all those things together that we had the Olympic trials back in the day we had the Olympic trials back in 198 1980 and we went through the whole Olympic trial piece of the puzzle all 80 people were there we went through that and we went through the two weeks of who was going to start and who was the starting shooting guard on the 1980 Olympic basketball team well it was Rolando Blackman and then the important fact is to understand that he beat out everybody that was there including the number four to Atlanta which was Al Wood but Al did the super thing al had a 39-point game against Virginia in the tournament so immediately you scouts thought you had the right guy and they didn’t so it’s an important I can tell there’s still a chip on your soul for me i love it as a as an incurable grudge holder i don’t I have never seen the side of you this is awesome no no it’s important because it’s a it’s a it’s an athletic piece and it’s a and it’s a proven piece so what do you as a scout have to see over all the college career over all and then and then at a at a at an Olympic trial where we go through the whole thing and then we go to Colorado and then we have the the fight for who’s going to start and then you win that out and now President Carter who anyway put put that whole thing together where we can’t go go to the Olympics but at the end of the day we play the gold medal series game we do all these kinds of things but the important factor with it is that I got I got everything incrementally kept moving forward with Orlando Wridge at 5 and then it got to eight i talked to Paul Silas uh uh I talked to Paul Silus and he was asking me he was asking me questions about the team and those kind of things too so they chose Tom Chambers and then it came to the ninth pick and I heard the guy out of the 6’6 out of Kansas State University black man so always remember that is those things leave an indelible print in your mind because it’s there so so Aguire knew you were going to go to ninth how I But that’s what I’m saying that’s the That’s the thing i don’t know how Mark knew somebody must have told him or what however that was going to work out because he passed right by me he was like “Same team same team.” And with that it came out to be the same team and and really had an opportunity to to come to a place where I I got a chance to learn to understand and uh got a got a continuum of the care the thing about it for me is that I grew up with I grew up in playing basketball with the hardship of being in Brooklyn New York and the things that are happening there which is fine but also I had care i had care i didn’t you know I can’t I can’t tell you like oh it was no no I had care i had people I had people around me who was giving that but it was a when I got to Dallas it was a little bit less of that now now you’re in a pro scene and it was a little bit less of that and the important factor was that I had a teacher there in coach Mada who was teaching constantly talking about the history of the game constantly talking about the players that he had the championship that he won and you’re trying to figure things out I was really happy to be in that kind of an environment because it gave me a chance to incrementally move forward and get a chance to understand what was going on and being Being a part of uh I mean being a part of the city was a part of the city was super because uh people were caring and it was really really nice around except they didn’t know a damn thing about basketball and it was like who who what are you guys doing again playing what basketball what was that is that is it a new thing with the Cowboys no no no no no no we’re we’re playing actually basketball down at reunion basketball that kind of a thing so I could actually remember being on having six uh appearances that we had to make for the NBA well guys like me were making 30 and 40 of them going all the way around it’s the first time I heard of Athens Texas Waxah Hatchee and I’m going down to you know Marshall i know I’m like I’m I’m going all over Texas to talk about the mass maz mass mass mass but then we got a chance to incrementally get better so people can get a chance to see that these guys can actually play you know Mark made the All-Star team three times i made it four times james Donaldson made it made it once roy Tarpley six man of the year derek Harper making all these defensive defensive teams and like anything else I always got to mention Brad Davis because he was the he was the glue at first to being able to implement what coach M wanted without him we would not have been able to incrementally grow he may not have been the most talented and this and that and the other but I want people to know and understand that that number 15 is up there for a reason of the of being the glue yeah and the person that helped us to increment them because he played that he played that backcourt position was cerebral understood what it needed to get done and could play the position very well and and because of that all of us got a chance to grow in in a great great way so I was very happy to be in this kind of an environment i I wouldn’t want to be in a cutthroat environment because it wouldn’t have been good for me as far as that’s concerned so I I I I got to the right place you mentioned Dick Mada a couple times one of the funniest stories I’ve ever heard involving the Mavericks and I believe this was his second coaching stint so I don’t believe you would have been there but he apparently brought a tiger into the locker room that was the halftime performance was a was like a tiger or a lion and and he was like “Hey can you bring this guy into the locker room to scare the apathy out of the players?” Oh my goodness it just you know I’ve I’ve it’s it was reported in in the newspapers at the time so I hope it’s true what type of coach was he was he like was he kind of uh you know uh that type of person that that would just you know like what type of you you mentioned teacher but like what type of impression you know do you still remember from Dick Ma the important thing for people to understand that it was hard yeah okay just to make sure we understand each other here make sure that it was hard mhm you weren’t going to get any pats on the back any hugs and all those kinds of things it uh it’s a it’s a it’s an important piece of the puzzle is that he wasn’t going to rahrh you or give you any kind of uh motivational speeches before the game and we’re going to put this together and all that kinds of stuff he was going to plan prepare put things together and then you guys bring all that to the game you know what I mean that kind of a thing so it was very important to note and understand that you have to bring all those things to yourself and also also he has a lot of quirks a lot quirky quirky in the things that he does also too in that kind of a way and and would get mad and hold grudges so so so in in those types of situations he knew the game very very well but the idea is that every all of us had to come with all of our quirks individuals with Mark with me with Derek with everybody and we were a bundle we were a bundle there trying to hold on figure it out break apart come back together it was it was something that was new for all of us yeah but the important factor was that we got what we needed but we had we had major challenges on a day-to-day basis to being able to keep it all all together uh with all our individual kirks and and who and who we were and what we were trying to do but we were damn good though we could we could actually we could actually play the game of basketball and we proved that by being in that 80s the 80s time yeah and had all stars not play all stars the best of the best yeah you guys had the misfortune of being in the 80s the Dallas Mavericks and the Milwaukee Bucks of the 1980s two of the greatest teams that never won at all and had the misfortune of having to deal with the Lakers and the Celtics those Mavs teams and those Bucks teams they could have played finals that would have been incredible and just very much so i I think people also need to know and understand also too that it’s not fun when you talk about the uh the the playing against the Lakers and those kinds of situations too that was the hardest things that we ever had to do to being able to put ourselves in the proper place watching a watching a 6-9 point guard get the get the rebound and bring it and bring it down the court at full speed 6-9 coming at you with with with with Worthy with Worthy and Byron Scott on the sides Rambus on the side it that that thing is a big deal and even when you got back and did the did the job of of busting your tail to got back Magic is over there pulls the ball to the side come on down Cap and here comes Kareem from half court in into position throw it into him pulls he pulls your arm through that kind of a thing and here comes Kareem and it’s and it was it was a very very difficult they did they truly have all the Hall of Famers on that team that they have it was a it was a hard road to tow and uh to take them to seven games and trying to put yourself in that position also too it was the hardest thing I ever ever had to do in all of my life because everything was required of you and everything and all of it was required of all of you at the same time this went too fast i knew it was going to go too fast we we haven’t even talked about confidence baby confidence you want to do one more you want to do one more can we trick you into just stay we’re good no problem no problem you promise i promise Rolando Blackman hanging out with us here on the DLS we promise we won’t keep you past 1:00 the show goes off the air at 1:00 finish up at 1:00 yeah he said he got to get to lunch we’ll make sure that you get to lunch a little bit here in just a minute uh just eight days away from the NBA draft cooper Flag of course visiting the Dallas Mavericks today the player from Duke the player from Duke i can say it ro can’t say it i can say it uh Cooper Flag is in town visiting the Dallas Mavericks as we get ready for the draft in just about a week in your role Rolanda I wanted to ask you this because being in the community being with the fans what has your experiences through not only as a player but working with this team and now connecting with fans how is that informed on what your message has been to the fans since winning the lottery and now as we get closer to the NBA draft about the message that you want fans to have as we move forward to what should be an exciting day of course what’s important and consistent for people to know and understand is the Dallas Mavericks have always been in internal to not only trying to play good basketball bring championships here it’s it’s it’s it’s a it’s a it’s a thought that continues each and every year each and every day so when things happen or things go wrong in in a p in a perceptive way you have to know and understand that that we care we give a damn it’s not uh haphazard in any kind of a way but the important fact is that they’ve always been in the community helping in educational factors community development having an opportunity to help different uh organizations to being able to be uplifted and fulfilled it’s an open opportunity to know that you have an organization here that’s really focused and future forward in helping each and every day to being able to uplift all the different organizations that come to us to being able to now put a better product out on the floor and also for them to to get their their uh opportunities to take place it’s a it’s an intricate intricate important for for the Mavericks to being able to now and forever continue to be internal to the community and to be able to uplift we always trying to do that all the time and uh being able to get people out of their ignorance and when I say ignorance I mean school kids to being able to know and understand exactly what the requirement of being a part of the future is all about and making sure that you acquies to that and put themselves in a place now where they can join a format that they now can have an impact on their future and not just to grow up like a leaf because a leaf just floats all around at some point gets wet and then you get dissolved sure and then you’re out of the whole thing so it’s important but the MAVs have always been in that way and I’m part of of the uh inclusion ambassadorship to being able to make sure that that we do that on all different levels also to black white brown whatever background that kind of a stuff too we’re all people having the opportunity to fulfill our life plan bring our families up and to being able to move forward in that way i’m always about that and we’ll continue to be about that and we’ll continue to speak about those things because it’s important we don’t have just one culture here this is this is a world culture and the important factor for people to acquies to it too get to it too because that there’s there are many different people many different background people and everybody has to live on value and respect without it we can’t do anything we can’t move forward we can’t come together as as a community and I’d like to keep calling this place the United States of America so the important factor is that we’re losing a little bit of that and we need to get back to that if we’re going to be united states and have an opportunity to move forward and work and do things on behalf of our people which means everybody not just one particular class very important and we need to have everybody move toward that because it’s uh it’s something that we don’t want to lose because what’s makes us really really special take it from a take it from a boy who came up on a student visa from Panama City Panama to go to school in the United States this is a this is a great great place the important factor is to let’s keep it that way and move forward on it for everyone and that’s what my life scope is about anyway that’s important amen to that i know you would rather talk about all these projects and endeavors that you work on now and I mean I think everybody just in that thing you just said understands why you are you are so active in the community i am in but like you’re sitting here with us and I I have to I want to bring up 87 i like I said I wanted to do a whole segment on this i you know I wanted to play the video but I was told we’re not allowed to do that i wanted to play the whole last two minutes 1987 All-Star game and I I know you get asked about this a ton but like for me I had never set foot in Dallas that that at that that point i was still in high school had no idea I was going to end up here had no idea that we would end up having this long professional working relationship but just like that is such a magical moment to me just because the All-Star game in those days I’m living in Southern California i don’t get to see Rolando Blackman play a lot mhm and those two free throws you made force overtime like it was is it’s magic but I I So for younger fans they’re going to remember you for this for for being on the Deis for the Cooper flag victory but for you what is your can you pick a standout moment as a Maverick either you know whatever’s happened in in in your life what would you say is the greatest euphoria that you have experienced as a Maverick i think the I think the the first time making an all-star team making the all-star team getting getting to the getting to the all-star level um that was that was the first that was the first time because 1984 I I averaged my highest that I’ve ever averaged uh and and didn’t make the team then I had to come back the next year and continue to perform and made my first All-Star team and uh Jan Hubard can tell you about that too i was outside with him when I found out about that too and I was cussing so much i don’t know i was I was I was uh had an outer body experience of happiness again in uh in getting to the height busting your tail and and and and getting there now finally getting a bite of the sandwich and and then you get that feel of not letting who whomever put that sandwich in front of you you’re not letting them withdraw the sandwich anymore now now now I want more bites and and and and that’s how it’s going to be so either I’m gonna keep holding your hand or you’re gonna let the sandwich go and leave it here with me because I’m getting more bites of this thing because it’s a it’s a special piece to be amongst your peers at the all-star level and I wanted to continue to be at that level continue to play and continue to continue to get get better you you you you feel that whole feeling and and of course and of course the 87 All-Star game amongst your peers and amongst an international West is down two Magic Johnson on the court who do they go to to tie the game but you Rolando Blackman important about that is that is about is about having that that all-star game is about having a having a reputation for last second shots having a reputation for being a clutch performer having a reputation along with along with uh coach Riley of being the coach playing against you all those times having that kind of a thing where people people the whole world may not know but the people inside the inside the village know and it’s an important piece of the puzzle when we got to that timeout Coach Riley was setting up the plays putting all these pieces together and at the end of the play he was like “Okay we’re going to tend to row make sure make sure you come off over here and get the just case get the basketball.” And you know what lo and behold all that happened movement started to go around i came up from the from from the from the free throw line below got the basketball turned quickly bird was there too slow can’t stay in front of me so So I just made a crossover on him went right to the bucket and decided not to do a two-step jumper decided that I’m going to the cup and went right to the cup and here comes Jordan Isaiah Dominique Wilkins at least three guys filed you all three of those guys and slamming me hit hitting me all over his place so and and then at the same time you have to understand the buzzer goes off at the same time and you go right and you go you you you go right back to your boyhood you go right back to that last second shot practicing free throws taking a shot it’s here the moment is here that fantasy it’s here for real and you can see me you can see me i I I looked up looked up and started to go right into my routine wipe my forehead make sure my fingertips are Make sure my fingertips have some moisture on them so they get to the grip when when you pitch off the ball it starts to grips immediately without it it’s the ball is slidy so you do that voom and you’re ready to go start to walk toward the free throw line but my teammate from the Olympic team knew that isaiah knew that you go because I go into my bag i go into that thing that I go into lockdown boop and he wanted to He came over there you punk you You are yours sir you You can’t You ain’t You can’t do And he’s trying to break the cycle i look I look at him and I understand exact said what he’s doing and I said shut the and and immediately I said I know I know what this mug is doing so I go right back you go right back into go right back into lockdown keep locking down cuz he’s trying to go back and forth and and the important factor to note and understand is that Isaiah is a guy that does a lot of laughing and talking but is one of the most treacherous people around see what I’m saying he’s treacherous because he’s he wants to win and he doesn’t care about anything about that and we’ll do anything to win he is that type it comes with a smile but you have to understand that the double daggers are back there you see what I mean and if you know that you’re taking these free throws and you’re going through the whole thing and on the right I’m listen though my my my life is on the line my reputation everything that I’ve always worked for all of it your peers are there miss a free throw and we walk to the locker room hey look this is not a It wasn’t funny to me it was It was something that was very very important but I also knew I heard them in the side over here too roll you ap and and him and Magic Magic trying to cover his mouth and they’re laughing so I have to lock all that down i have to lock all that down boom lock lock it down because it’s hard because because you’re a human being and your body wants to go into this thing you can feel your body you can feel it and you have to you have to lock it down for this is what I practice this come on confidence confidence and you’re telling yourself confidence and as you say that you can you can see you get a sprinkle you get a start to lock into what you have to do so now I got to get the damn distance because I’m I’m taking the free throw there’s nobody on the line which is very very different and of course Seattle it’s a vacuum it’s a it’s not a closed gym it’s a big big old vacuum so you have to you have to get in there and you you have to lock in on the rim because that’s where you can get the parameters for that’s where you get the parameters for the 15 for the 15t away 10 ft high so you have to lock in and only do that so I had to get the distance though to be able to put that so I put that So I got to get it up straight and soft straight and soft so I put the ball up and the ball leaves and I’m looking and it hits the front rim hits the back and then drops in boom i turn around immediately i got the distance now i got the feel of what that distance is and here comes Isaiah again you are pumped you can’t you are you can’t do this and that and the other and all that kind of stuff too so I’m just saying to myself confidence baby confidence confident i answer him you know get the hell away from me and and just like confidence confidence confidence so I get back to the line i had the distance now now I have the distance so confidence baby confidence confidence confidence baby confidence confidence baby confidence look up the rim distance is there put the ball up put the ball up confidence baby confidence confidence baby confidence and the ball goes through turn around and the greatest feeling you ever have of your peers there’s There’s Hakee Elijah on this there’s there’s a a a Kareem where everybody’s giving you and and these are your peers these are the these are the best of the best telling you “Oh man oh this ro you you the man.” I’m like I’m like “Wow this is it was it was a great great feeling.” And with that we go into the overtime piece i score the first two points of the overtime grab the ball i got I got a nice layup on that kind of stuff too cuz uh cuz uh it was it was it was a tremendous piece then to go through that whole segment and to win the game and I and I walk right to the I walked right to the locker room and uh and and my first the first questions they were asking me was “Oh man you should have been MVP.” And I said “Well that’s that’s not that’s not here or there we won the game.” Yeah and and and in fairness be careful now be careful now in fairness Tom Chambers was hooping excuse me excuse me tom Chambers was It wasn’t like he they just gave it to him and he had the He had the hometown factor too yeah yeah he did he did he had the advantages that that come with that kind of a thing no problem but at the end of the day those those things didn’t bother me whatsoever i was happy he played well got the MVP we won we beat them all that all that All-Star team they had over there and and and and we had the win and and and it goes down in history forever and ever in that kind of a way and that was one of the last All-Star games where we were hooping against each other i was it was it was it was compete i want to urge our younger audience please go find it on YouTube because the Allstar game meant something then it was it was huge and it was you guys were playing fighting to win everybody was playing together to try to win and it was hard it was hard hooping and and I loved every bit of it the NBA wasn’t in the place that it is now i mean it was still it was on the rise it was you know Magic and Larry and Michael but it was still like it is not the the the juggernaut of a league that it is today and like as a high school kid all slam dunk contest allar game my world stopped my like it was the most important thing on television all year long and I will I will I will never forget watching it was always it was always special in that way and I’m And I’m hoping that the guys uh can can can drop off all these incentives that they keep getting to recapture some of the magic yeah yeah go go go go go actually go actually go actually go back to the schoolyard and go hoop against this boy over here he’s talking trash he’s talking trash about winning so So let’s go on the floor yeah let’s go exactly so I’m hoping that he can get back to that and uh enjoy the whole process too but it was it was a great time in history and something very very special too i made the free throws so now when I So now when I hear from people it’s a it’s a positive thing all over the world in that kind of a thing and uh I count I count my blessings for that though because it was a special time and it’s great to come through in that well this was tremendous for us here on the DLS I love Ro but him drinking the positive piece koolaid was so 1984. Fire Nico
Please stop with the 2 decade talk.
Two decades with Dallas? I doubt it. They said that about Luka and after being a 5 straight year all-nba and all-star, they traded him. You took the most consistent known and replaced him with injured players and the unknown. If they don't win and win immediately, I could see this entire Dallas team being redone again because you have to pay AD $67 million here soon and your main players are all getting a lot older.
33:00 where is the audio?
Imagine how we’d look on all this is Flagg ends up being Nic Batum
Martin + Max + Hardy for Smart + No. 18 pick. Smart has a one-year contract anyway, so the 20 million contract expiring next year will be just enough to be divided between Gafford and PJ. Smart can still be the first defender and backup point guard after Irving returns. And get a draft pick. There is no need to send PJ and Gafford away.
The irony of a group of reporters that have demonically tried to zap all spirit from their fanbase the past few months having to promote “Spirit week” is hilarious. Yes, let’s all show our team spirit for the Organization we’ve been told has no idea what they’re doing, doesn’t care about fans (only a child would really care about about that though), and have supposedly run the team into the current team into the dirt.
Best show ever guys
