we got some major news to discuss Celtics fans but I could not start today’s show without celebrating 617 day with you guys happy anniversary Celtics fans just one year ago we took home the Larry O’Brien trophy and 17 years ago as well pierce KG Ray Allen Rondo the whole bunch took home the six 17th excuse me Boston Celtics championship and my question to you guys before we start today’s show is if we had these two teams matched up against each other who would win in a sevengame series if it’s the ‘ 08 C’s type 2008 or if it’s last year’s Boston Celtics championship roster type 2024 down in the comments section i’m trying to hear what the Celtics fans have to say [Music] what’s going on green teamers you’re watching Celtics Today by chat sports i am your host Tyler Smith and on today’s show we have a double dose of major news surrounding your Boston Celtics as a new report came out that Kevin Durant wanted to be traded to Boston and then on the back half of today’s show we’ll talk about the Celtics free agency outlook and how likely it is or not that they end up resigning one of or both Luke Cornet and Al Horford can the C’s keep either center well we’ll talk about it on today’s show but let’s hop in to this Kevin Durant report that came out from Kevin Oconor of Yahoo Sports he said Durant has already been denied by his top choices there were rumblings at the trade deadline that KD wanted to land with the Celtics or Knicks new York’s interest reportedly isn’t mutual anymore and Boston’s cap sheet and trajectory make that scenario highly unlikely look man that would have been awesome and I’ve always wanted Kevin Durant as a member of the Celtics i spent my July 4th yes this is kind of an embarrassing thing to admit but back in 2016 I spent my entire July 4th sitting on my basement floor refreshing Twitter constantly constantly can Kevin Durant sign with the Celtics will you sign with the Celtics we were on the doorstep and then the Warriors obviously swoop in with the Hampton’s five and get two championships out of KD and look the Celtics they were trying to potentially trade for KD a couple of seasons ago back in 2022 reports came out that Brad Stevens was willing to deal both Jaylen Brown and Derek White a couple of seasons ago for Kevin Durant but nothing ever materialized the Nets said no to that package and they were probably silly to do so now a couple of years later Kevin Durant’s back in the trade circles and a trade is likely to happen over these next few days but not likely to uh see him be wearing green look Boston would have to trade Jaylen Brown in this scenario and both teams Boston and Phoenix are above the second apron at this point so a one for one deal would be incredibly unlikely both teams have to have like literally the exact dollar amount going back and forth between each other so it involve a third team and uh no player uh as far as Jaylen Brown’s stature is getting traded for Kevin Durant at this point the asking price is pretty low and it’s just not realistic for the Celtics to trade for KD but they could potentially get involved but let’s just talk about who Kevin Durant could be dealt to over these next week or so as of right now the KD trade odds are as follows the Miami Heat just took the lead as the favorite according to the people out west at plus 200 the Rockets close behind at plus 250 and the Spurs at plus 300 the Timberwolves at plus 350 and then a big drop off to the Toronto Raptors that have some reported interest at plus 1,200 but right now it seems like the Heat and the Rockets are the most realistic destinations as the Spurs interest is not as uh high as initially thought so it’s going to be one of these you know couple of teams here that KD ends up getting dealt to it seems and could the Celtics potentially get involved and be used as a vehicle in one of those deals i think that they could for a couple of reasons one um I think it’s going to take a third team regardless of the Kevin Durant package uh in order to get that done because trades are complicated with the NBA the new CBA it makes a lot of things impossible so it’s it’s not going to be easy for the Suns to actually get a deal materialize plus they don’t like any of the offers that they’ve gotten at this point so could a third team jump in and help sweeten the deal i think the Celtics could be that squad and we’ll talk about it in just a moment but first make sure you go down below and like today’s video if you want Brad Stevens to make the right moves this off seasonason video because we want Brad to do the right thing let’s go back to this quote that we originally heard from Brian Rob initially reporting how the Celtics could get involved in a KD trade said given Boston’s need to move excess salary this offseason they certainly could try to work their way into a deal to help move secondary pieces the other aspect of this was worth watching for Boston naturally is where Durant ends up and we’ve talked about this i doubt that Brad Stevens facilitates a trade to the Eastern Conference in this scenario with the Heat being the favorite and they’re obviously the most likely Eastern Conference team to trade for Durant i’m not so sure that that Brad would want to help uh you know the Heat out and and you know be a vehicle to get Kevin Durant to an arch rival of the Boston Celtics and give the Heat a pretty good pathway to winning the Eastern Conference next season so I doubt that it happens but I don’t think it’s completely out of the question just yet if it helps the Celtics and benefits them long term those are the moves that Brad Stevens is going to make and then Jake Fischer came out with this yesterday saying “I’ve also heard that Phoenix has done some background work on Chris Porzingis with Boston known to be exploring its trade options up and down the roster.” And Phoenix also has done their background work on Andrew Wiggins and that obviously makes a lot more sense with the Heat being a big uh destination for KD at this point and Andrew Wiggins having to be a part of any deal that gets made for Durant and to the Heat so naturally Phoenix is going to do their work uh a little bit so with that being said like could the Celtics get in a deal that ends up being you know KD to the Heat Andrew Wiggins to the Suns as well as Chris Tasporing to Phoenix i’m not so sure that that’s all that realistic u I I th ran the trade through Fanso and that would be $58 million going back to Phoenix versus uh you know 54 going out in Durant and they cannot aggregate salaries as a second apron team so if Porzingis was to be traded to Phoenix it’s not all that realistic that it ends up happening in a KD to the Heat deal but maybe down the line if Phoenix gets out of the Second Apron and I’ll just vocalize this on screen out but no worries um if they end up getting under the Second Apron via uh via this KD trade and they can start aggregating salaries maybe there are a couple of assets that the Suns have on their books right now that could be worth it in a Celtics trade now these two players that I’m about to mention are on three-year contracts but they are making good money to in order to get some salary relief for Boston grayson Allen makes $17 million about 16.8 next season and Royce O’Neal makes 10.1 so I could potentially see a trade end up happening down the line as Boston has been reported to not be super impatient when it comes to making moves this off seasonason they’re comfortable waiting potentially all the way into next season up to the trade deadline when those luxury tax repeater penalties end up hitting so this could be something that doesn’t ne necessarily involve Kevin Durant but it also could so lots of different um you know ideas and and and opportunities and and explorations that that Brad Stevens and the Celtics need to do this off seasonason and if they do end up making a move Horford’s free agency an NBA insider by the name of Michael Scott over at Hoops Hype detailed a bunch of different you know roundt NBA topics like Kevin Durant’s trade um you know destinations like you know other free agency outlooks around the league and then got to the Celtics with Al Horford and Luke Cornet being their two key unrestricted free agents and Scott opened talking about Horford saying this predominantly highlevel playoff contenders are monitoring Horford to see if he’d leave Boston with the Celtics expected to take a step back without Tatum next season and in a financial crunch regarding their salary books the general sense around the league and close and those close to Horford is that he’ll continue to play next season now Scott did not say where Horford is leaning on playing next season and to be honest from my view here like to me Al Horford’s career is stamped like as far as his entire basketball life two-time national champion of Florida finally got that illustrious NBA championship last year with the Boston Celtics a multi-time all-star we’re talking about here and there really isn’t that much left to prove from my view in his career but I’m not Al Horford if he believes that there there’s still stuff left to prove in his NBA career then he is going to you know look at the idea of joining another contender but I do really not I don’t really think it it’s that high of a chance that that Al Horford wants to leave Boston however it is not the easiest uh thing financially to do and Horford’s still absolutely contributor at this point i don’t think that he is a veteran minimum player he’s still putting up really solid efficiencies he’s still being a good and mobile defender uh you know for stretches and he’s putting up you know 10 and six pretty much every game as that off the bench center the Celtics more often than not were a better basketball team out on the floor with Al Horford rather than Chris Porzingis so I would understand completely why they would want to keep him in town and in the playoffs this past year he he was one of the more consistent players on the roster when nobody could shoot throughout this entire postseason run al Horford’s out there at 39 years old playing 32 minutes a game and shooting 40% from three he continues to be effective at this stage in his career doesn’t seem like he needs to retire at this point and if he still wants to keep playing basketball I am all for it look I just can’t see Al Horford wearing another jersey especially at this point in his career like I was surprised when he left for Philly but I wasn’t you know shocked because he got a $100 million contract and he ends up getting dealt to Oklahoma City and then the Celtics swoop in and trade Kemell Walker for him and it’s been awesome ever since then so I I I just can’t see Al Horford wanting to be on another team especially at this late late stage in his NBA career i hope they can bring him back and I hope he’ll take a little bit of a discount to be able to do so hopefully maybe you know you never know maybe he waits until the Celtics get under that second apron and have a little bit of flexibility to give him the money that he deserves now on the other hand Luke Cornet I’m not so sure that the Celtics are going to be able to bring him back he might be getting a raise evan Citter said this uh from Forbes Sports he said the Celtics are likely to lose backup center Luke Cornet and unrestricted free agency with Boston’s massive tax bill and their plans to lower it cornet will find interest from contending teams who can offer more annually the Celtics can’t can’t offer much annually right now um on their books the only exception that they have for free agency is veteran minimums and Luke Cornet is going to get more than the veteran minimum look second apron man it it makes everything impossible even retaining your players that you have helped uh you know kind of progress and get better along their career l Cornet was kind of a scrub before he came to the Boston Celtics and has only gotten better over these last couple of seasons it’s just so unfortunate that this new CBA really uh limits your ability to you know keep a roster that you have helped build and turn into a contender long term scott said this as well about Cornet he said after thoroughly outplaying his current contract Cornet is expected to earn a substantial pay raise and have a robust market this summer among various teams who have the non-taxpayer mid-level exception to spend and that non-taxpayer mid-level exception exceeds all the way up to $14.1 million and the Celtics they can’t really afford to give out raises right now unfortunately even for the players on their roster they just can’t do it i mean they got a guy like Sam Hower making 10 million but it really cost 80 million when it comes to their luxury tax penalties look I would love to bring back Cornet man and I think that he could be a starting center for Boston he showed in the postseason that when he got those opportunities he stepped up to the plate and over the past few seasons man you look back to 2022 he was kind of a scrub only playing 15 minutes a game or 15 games that year and I think he was bouncing around the G- League for a good bit then he comes to Boston and has only gotten better each of the last few seasons and he’s been playing more minutes he’s got his role elevated up to an 18 and 12 minute a guy a game guy this past year and he he’s been awesome man like I I loved what he did uh in the postseason as well when he that opportunity knocks like Chris Porzingis could not breathe out there on the basketball court and what did Luke Cornet do in a must-win game in game five he absolutely dominated 10 points nine rebounds that I I’ll never forget and they can never take away that reverse lob slam that Luke Cornet threw down he had seven blocks tying a Celtics record or I think he actually broke it uh off of the bench so and and he was obviously incredibly efficient five for five from the floor that big sevenfooter hanging around the rim look I love Cornet man he brings a lot of energy he’s great in the locker room uh and if money was no object like I really believe that both Al Horford and Luke Cornet would both resign with the Boston Celtics but unfortunately the Celtics are now in a corner a little bit and they’d be lucky if either one of them came back and it’s obviously more likely that Horford does considering his age and you know he’s already made his money in this league cornet still looking to get you know his biggest payday of his career after outplaying the contract that he’s currently on so Boston they would be very very lucky to end up you know retaining either one of these guys uh I want at least one to come back as Celtics front court looks really really thin heading into next season but with the way that they have performed these past couple years man they could absolutely deserve and and receive pay raises that the Celtics just cannot afford at this point but what do you guys think if you had to be able to if
