Hour 3: Utah Jazz Trade Options Booster by Indiana Pacers? | Brian Taylor on the U.S. Open | PK’s…

join hands and Scotty Monday from noon to three john Watson Chevrolet 3535 Wall Avenue in Ogden NBA Finals game three to the Pacers a lot of guys played well but man if you really have to boil it down into the shortorthhand PK that Pacers bench was outstanding outscoring Oklahoma City 49 to 18 they were plus 31 in a game that they won by nine points and obviously Mathan led the way his 27 points in 22 minutes was a killer but TJ McConnell and Obie Topphen both both contributed as well yeah i mean they were literally the difference and that when you look at the Jazz makes you think for teams that we know have good players but don’t have a bench that was a problem in Phoenix obviously is a problem in Denver phoenix may be going uh undergoing some big change here as some of the big names change teams here and maybe teams that are acquiring them have to give up assets so there might be some team that isn’t going to have a bench next year and we don’t we don’t know it right now but maybe sometime in mid July it’ll be very apparent team X whoever it is needs some bench help the Jazz do have guys who can perform that role it could uh could put them in a spot to make a deal oh I don’t think there’s any question that Colin Son can be a Mather and John Collins can be a topping there’s is no doubt in my mind and so when you look at these teams that they need those types of players those veteran dudes who can come in Matron’s a little on the younger side the other two have been around mcconnell I think is in just finished his ninth year in the league and take Saxon can do what TJ does and that’s taken nothing away from Okonnell by any stretch tj McConnell just turned 33 where have the years gone yeah i said Okonnell but McConnell yeah absolutely yeah right uh and so my point is the Jazz have some valuable guys that not individually on their own but in a team concept that a team is on the verge of winning is just right there those are the types of guys that can help you get over the top and it’s been that way forever they used to talk about his supporting cast with Jordan and Jordan wins his first NBA title and I’m covering him for the Daily Breeze in Torrance California and one of my stories was the supporting cast yeah he dropped my supporting cast and that became a thing i picked up on it i was a young kid i’m but I’m not that stupid and that was a catchphrase and so I interviewed all the guys on the support the supporting cast cliff Leonston he was right there at the top of the list yes and interviewed him sat down with him and they needed those dudes some of them actually even started obviously uh so with that in mind yeah put these guys out there you Jazz got some valuable players that the other le other teams in the league would want particular teams that are on the verge and if the Pacers as the fourth seed if they should even if they don’t win it the fact that they got this far that ought to give hope to everybody in the league with LeBron the end is near he’s great but he’s not as great and there’s nobody else really to take over Right now there might be let’s see five years from now Cooper flag one Bay Alama whomever but right now the door is wide open to go win a title and if you get one if you only got one you can die happy that’s one more than you had in the previous 50 years Milwaukee right Denver and now maybe Indiana everybody here knows about that elusive one and how awesome it would be we’d be talking about it forever deservedly So this club isn’t in position to do that but they’ve got talent that can get others there so maybe they can get a higher price you’d pay if you knew man and there’s no guarantees obviously in sports but if you really thought strongly Collins Sexton even marketin who’s a little higher than a role player for sure that man that guy can come in and with the guys that we have and the guys we’re going to get also the we’ve got a shot right now well you mentioned it earlier that and and it’s been a topic for a couple of years now even though a couple years ago was a couple years away you could still see it coming Boston is going to have to pay a lot of people and they did get their title and they had their their run of Eastern Commerce Finals has been you know phenomenal i think it’s six and nine years now but they can’t pay everybody and if they have to trade Brown you know they’re also the Celtics they can’t be terrible if they trade him they have to get people back and I think they have to be plausibly good i think they’re too good to tear it all the way down to the ground the way the Jazz did oh for sure yeah so so you got to give them good players now you can’t give them someone who’s that accomplished but if you gave them a couple people hey they don’t have the star power but they have the depth and look how much look what you can do with depth look at what Indiana is doing with it i mean as good as Hallebertton is 22-point game is the biggest thing he’s done he’s not out there dropping 40 on people not even dropping 30 on the Thunder but they’re up two games to one not even 25 if you said 22 count them down not even 23 yeah but I mean 23 is not a nice round number though so it doesn’t really work the 40 the 30 the 25 i felt like you were one uh one number short of making your point really sealing and cementing the point you were making and once I added the 25 I think you know that there’s no doubt about it that’s the first time he’s even scored 20 points in the finals so I can even argue a team like Detroit with the season they had with Bicker Staff coaching them that hey you get a little help look what you could potentially do and I get that what would you get back from Detroit i don’t know i just knew that off the top of my head i I’d have to look at the roster well and and but to your point if Detroit doesn’t have anything that makes it work okay a three-team deal who else is moving who else needs something to make a deal work you gota and they have they have massive staffs to do this now you got to go through and look at all those possibilities what plausibly could work and if we get a phone call what can we nudge in the right direction i just picked Detroit because they’re they had a good season they’re an up and cominging team right doing what doing what the Pacers did but not quite as far along in the process yeah right right multiple years in the lottery complete rebuild here we go yes and they’ll get Ivy was injured most of the season or a good portion put him back and you got Cunningham’s taken off and they got some other guys obviously and maybe you can get something from them you just there’s no need to waste these players in street clothes next year like we did last year there’s just no need you want Millie Beasley back probably not passed through town once already he’s in Detroit now yeah well he had a nice season wasn’t he a candidate for six uh of the year he helped him uh yeah but Detroit uh Orlando’s a team that is moving forward but people feel like should be better installed maybe they’re looking they were devastated by They were devastated by injuries this year and they finished right at 500 um but maybe they’re a team that’d be interested in a deal what can they do to push things forward yeah uh sure yeah clearly the Warriors they want to try again i mean they and they need people who are inexpensive because they’re paying they’re paying three guys a lot of money they’re going to end up being like most teams do with a franchise icon you drag it out drag Drag it out make some money while you drag it out the arena still still full but getting back to that championship tier good luck with that yeah and it’s going to sink or start to sink and then do they trade him or do they does he retire or does he say I want to come back and they keep him ditzky they did that the statues we did it here with those guys and they sink in the standings you know instead of playing the upstart uh Kings and beating them the Kings aren’t the upstart anymore you’re the fading team they beat you that’s a story that’s worn out how things turned around here yes i mean so th those teams particularly if they’re vulnerable they need some players and man Jazz got some players and right now Austin H has walked into a situation where it’s almost like a buffet what do I want to eat what do I want to consume what do I want to pass on he can’t eat everything right and he gets to choose where do I want to go what do I want to do this team this year may never have as many options to go in a plethora of directions as they do right now yeah it’s hard to know that but I get your point i mean there’s certainly three uh veteran players out there who people would be interested in and there’s at least one of the younger guys that everybody’s interested in but you never know as you go team from team other people probably like some of those young guys and would like to develop yeah they’ve all scouted them right these aren’t nobodyies to the people in the league yeah and and now they have two more first round draft choices i don’t know if they’re even going to have that one next year right the big deal with the OKC Thunder we don’t know that but we know they’ve got two this year and they’ve already had I say they’ve had six because to me Philip Powowski played like a first round pick i don’t think anybody argues that right i realize technically it spilled over into the second round but he was a he’s got first round talent they’ve got six young guys they drafted ker would be a seventh young guy and they’re it looks like they’re about to add two more yeah they’re not going to have that many options next year no way so that’s nine plus the veteran talent that they have and they’ve got talent these guys are marketable players i will say of the young guys there’s um you know probably a couple that’d be hard to move but it’d be interesting somebody even um you know like Collier if somebody thinks they could get him on the cheap and they can develop him because the salary limitations and Austin kind of touched on this in that introductory press conference the salary limitations some of these teams face really intense right i wouldn’t view Collier as a difference maker next season but he’s a project and he showed some stuff he’s got a downside and if he can’t afford anything it’s like okay we’ll take this guy can we get him to the point we get 10 to 15 good minutes now there’s probably somebody out there who’s like “No but there’s 30 teams in the league probably a couple teams out there like “Yep we can that’s worth the risk let’s take that gamble.” Well yeah yeah phoenix didn’t have anybody like Collier to run the offense right i’m sure the Clippers do a couple players in a pick one veteran one young guy a pick or two out there in the future what kind of a player can you get the Nuggets could use somebody like him absolutely that’s the kind of team where you could see they just I mean the Warriors for that matter it’s like they have to bet on young guys who make almost no money because you just and the Warriors are going to spend $140 million on three guys next year there’s not that much money left so you got to find somebody out there who’s making 5 million or less who can help you that’s why I really believe the time is not now to make a large jump in the standings but I think the time is now to make significant moves to put you in that position better or better put you in that position i think minimally they have to do the second thing you talked about position your just continue to position yourself but better in the a significant jump what A was trying to say I think with the big game Danny when you dropped the big game hunting line wasn’t so much like and the way fans took it was we’re going to go big game hunting i’m going to get somebody we’re going to get out of this doldrums you’re going to be back it’s going to be awesome we’re going to be winning 50 we’re going to be deep in the playoffs it’s going to happen soon and I what he think he was trying to say is when the opportunity is there we’ll be poised to do it but who knows when that’s going to be now it hasn’t happened and it’s been frustrating and the line’s taking on a life of its own who knows maybe Brown and the Celtics is that moment and it’s this summer but maybe it’s at the next trade deadline maybe it’s a year from now you know those big quote unquote blockbuster trades we’ve already been over this this week well I don’t think it’ll be seem to Oh yeah multiple moves yeah could could well be because I don’t think there’s one single move that’ll make a significant difference it’s a combination plus the internal development yeah well I mean when a hit hit the home run before it wasn’t just one move you know the Yeah getting getting Ray Allen and you even went back further in Celtic history yesterday when you were talking about male and Parish yeah and and two moves at the same time but it might not even be at the same time it may be over the course of the deadlines that you just specified yes that’s what I see most likely because it’s more logical but what most likely isn’t like a thousand% of saying no it’s unlikely but unlikely opens the door i think that the had dons going to the Lakers the new right the new collective bargaining agreement really puts teams under a lot of financial pressure it’s the hardest cap they’ve faced so I think we could see more decisions that from a basketball perspective are surprising and change people’s fortunes because over here there’s a lot of money at stake and I know these ownership groups have a lot of money but they draw penalties that are pretty intense and people seem to be reacting to them they don’t want to flush that money away yeah but that they don’t want to do it for not winning if you told them that they would win they would only do it and if you don’t do it you don’t want that owner anyway define winning because they’re teams that’ll go all in so they can get to the playoffs so people do their job and then you’ve got the Warriors who won four times and they’re loitering in that the Jazz aren’t the the Warriors they are they the opportunity to win they make those Scott Leaden was making those trades and the trade didn’t even happen because the opportunity to win was right in front of them and they didn’t get it done but so what you want to go down swinging you don’t want to take uh hold the bat on your shoulder you want to take a hack cuz who knows you just might hit it and I’ve got no problem with that if you don’t if you don’t win but you try to win I’m good enough friend of mine once coach said “Stick the bat out there the ball might hit it.” Okay you get a you get a man you can text my wife this right now ask her say “Hey man’s got a piece of lumber in his hand what is he dangerous?” And I guarantee you she’ll say dangerous i’ve taught her well and that’s a fact djpk it’s 975 the zone when we return just look what Jean Tennis did we go to We go to Oakmont jean Tennis with another shout out we go to Oakmont this thing was supposed to be a beast we’ve got almost uh what do we got almost uh we got 15 people now we’re under par and what does that mean we’ll get to that with Brian Taylor from Oakmont next stay with us ladies and gentlemen may I present This is JJ and Alex joining us on the program right now John Wilner college football writer for Mercury News what are some of the issues and concerns about that 5 plus 11 model that gives a lot of people pause well I think that it gives the selection committee an immense amount of power they’re picking 11 spots there are a lot of reasons to be wary of the selection committee i mean your state is one of the big ones right i think uh BYU got totally hosed that is a sentiment a lot of people feel could get repeated every year if the committee is allowed to pick most of the field one corner is distrust of the selection committee another corner is the need for more money because of revenue sharing and the third corner is that ESPN isn’t on the hook to pay more if they expand the playoff so they can’t just get more money by expanding the playoff catch JJ and Alex afternoons from 3 to 6 presented by G2G bars on 975 the KSL Sports Zone dj and PK it’s 975 the zone we are joined now by Brian Taylor brian good morning morning guys brian I’ve been consuming large amounts of information about the uh US Open and I heard a conspiracy theory who doesn’t love a good conspira it’s more a prediction than a conspiracy theory the prediction was that there was enough rain Sunday and mostly Sunday but Sunday and Monday that the course was still quote unquote getable and so a golfer told a media member “Yeah somebody’s going to get dialed in and go low lots of guys will you know will struggle but a one or a few players will get dialed in and go low and they will the USGA will flip the switch on the subair system and dry that course out and there going to be a lot of people shooting 75 and 80 on Friday do you believe that scenario is unfolding as we speak well Bob and I spent most of the morning out here the last several hours watching the groups play uh the back nine and it was as easy as you could find Oakmont to be in a US Open there’s no question about it i mean the balls were stopping in the fairways uh the greens were extremely receptive you saw tons of shots that would hit and spin and back up you know 15 20 feet you know things like that so I think it caught a lot of players by surprise everybody was being a little bit cautious uh we sat on the 14th green and watched shots into that back pin and there was a few that were willing to take that pin on and if they did they had an easy tap in birdie but most of them thought it was going to they they they protected from going over the back which is smart normally but they would suck it back you know 15 20 feet and then miss it coming up so uh it it’s Yeah I mean with no wind ideal scoring conditions absolutely perfect this is the morning to get it because even this afternoon I suspect it won’t play as easily so what that that theory you’re talking about is is likely true i just don’t know if there’s because of the amount of rain you spoke of I’m not sure they can dial it up tomorrow i don’t know that there’s a dial you know that can dry this thing out fast enough to have that kind of thing happen and then they’re expecting some potential rain on the weekend so I I think it’s going to be rather soft we’ll see you partially took away my first question was I was going to ask you uh will the tea times make a difference in terms of morning versus afternoon because we know they do it on Thursday and then you reverse it on Friday right morning goes to afternoon afternoon goes to morning and you talked about potentially the wind conditions and sometimes in some places like they talked about this at Black Desert uh in the afternoons if you’re going to have wind it’s going to be most likely in the afternoon i don’t know about the I mean I’ve been to Pittsburgh a few times but I don’t really know it uh as far as is that traditional in if you’re going to have wind it’s going to come in the afternoon or is it more just circumstantial yeah I I wish I was really up to speed on Pittsburgh’s wind patterns for you PK but um generally speaking yes I think you’re going to see calmer conditions in the morning that’s what we’re seeing today anyway uh yesterday same thing by the time we left the wind was blowing pretty good and you know I think as it continues to heat up that I don’t know geez I feel like we’d have to hit a meteorologist up but I think as it gets warmer it tends to to bring us a little bit more wind in so um yeah I do think you’re going to like all I can tell you is this morning was perfect uh I suspect the evening will be ideal and you might get some winds you know sort of in in the middle uh that might pop up but you can see what JJ Spawn’s doing out there you know Gary Woodland Adam Scott I mean Windham Clark these guys are they’re taking advantage they’re doing what you need to do rory Mroy is even up there at 200 par so um you know hitting fairways hitting greens that’s that’s what we’ve talked about all week and the conditions are ripe for that today i I was just thinking about it from the lens of the Oakmont members and especially the president he was pretty passionate at media day a month ago that he wants the winning score to be well over par and the USJ was happy to oblige but of course as uh John Bowdenhammer chief championships officer would say mother nature has a seat at the table and so uh she definitely has something to say about that and right now it’s just uh it’s a it’s a soft golf course you mentioned Rory he is two under through eight and we know he got the career grand slam what’s his motivation now he’s talked about that that was the goal for so long now he needs new goals he’s not playing well the driver gets tested he’s got a new driver he’s pretty much everywhere at the Canadian Open except the fairway with that driver and he shoots a 78 how in the world is he 200 is he scrambling right now or is he really hitting fairways and hitting greens cuz man this is a completely different Rory Mroy than we saw last Friday yeah I mean he’s hit three of just three of eight fairways so far but like the one the one he just missed on nine uh we were standing right there by it and it just went into the rough and he was able to knock it on the green and and uh made par so um you know he’s he’s not missing it as badly as he was at the Canadian Open he does have a different driver in play he wouldn’t say which driver that was another really awkward interview exchange earlier this week when he was asked what driver he said “Tailor made.” And we’re like “Okay well can you tell us what model?” And he said “Yeah exactly come out and watch me.” So just I I I don’t know weird but yeah he seems you know he seemed okay i mean I watched him for four or five holes this morning and he seemed like he was hitting it pretty good and um yeah I mean the other one with 14 he would have been a fairway miss he hit it actually hit went too far and ran into the rough just short of the bunker there greenside and he was able to pitch it up there and and missed the birdie but made par and and you know he moves on so yeah I think uh he hasn’t been in perfect position but he hasn’t been out of position that’s cost him at this point so much is made of US Open rough and it’s like okay it’s that time of year and we know it no matter where the course is it just seems like it’s always about the rough at the US Open but do they compensate for okay if you go in the rough it’s a big-time penalty not literally but just in your game as opposed to all right the offshoot of that is we’ve got big fairways guys is that the situation so hit the freaking fairway we made the fairways bigger just don’t go over there yeah so Gil Hans actually talked about that they widen the fairways maybe two or three yards wider yeah the the interesting thing about Oakmont though is it’s it’s a little deceptive so even though they look like wide fairways the slopes of them make them effectively smaller than they are right because you you have to be able to sort of either hook it into the slope to hold it or cut it into the slope depending on which way it’s going um normally like right now we just again just saw a shot with Bryson he hit it straight down the middle of the fairway it rolled maybe 10 yards and stopped i mean that’s I’m telling you that is not how they envisioned it rory just hit his approach shot to one you know it backed up the hill again a severe slope you know from front to back and it literally spun back up the hill and so you know those are the kind of things that uh that you that these players don’t expect uh to see and and that happens with the soft soft golf course what’s interesting about the rough I did see some shots and there were several who you know had to kind of pitch it out and maybe advanced it you know 70 80 yards and then there were others that played it from looked like some precarious spots and were able to move it up there you know 150 180 yards so um you know kind of I I think it’s a little bit lie dependent and and uh and how it how it sits but uh there’s plenty of fair way out there today i think to answer your question there’s plenty of fair way out there it’s just a matter of finding it and and I did talk to equipment manufacturer this week my good friend from Fujakura Golf Shafts and I said “What’s the scoop?” And he said “Lots of mini drivers fivewoods and seven woods made up this week.” So I think players are putting a premium on trying to do what they can for accuracy even if the sacrifice of some distance there’s been a lot of discussion and uh they’ve been some pieces on social media where they interview players and say what would an 18 handicapper do on do on this course and guys are guessing numbers 120 130 140 150 and Justin Rose I thought it was so interesting well do they do they have ball spotters because he thinks that you know that we’ve all been there as amateurs you hit a ball you’re sure it’s out there but there’s no one to find it for you and you don’t know where it You can’t see it and you don’t think you hit that bad a shot but where’s the ball what would what would happen i mean you’re much better than a bogey golfer i’ve heard you’re not quite to scratch but you’re pretty close he’s the best okay here we go here we go everybody’s like I’m tuning this out now radio what would a scratch golfer shoot on this course when we hear how hard it is what would the bogey golfer shoot uh I so when when I mean when Bob and I played we played at about a thousand yards shorter than these guys were playing it and I shot 81 and Bob shot 76 78 something like that you interestingly enough though um and I would say that’s a little bit generous um pretty sure I probably picked up a you know a double bogey or something like that so if you’re playing it out US Open rules I probably would have been more like an 85 um something around those and again we weren’t playing the back tees it was pouring rain that Okay it was kind of sloppy wasn’t it wasn’t all that cool but uh well you you mentioned the lost ball so we played the 16th hole as par three and Bob came up just a little short right i hit it on a green by the way you know every once in a while I can outdo the the great Bob Casper but anyway nevertheless I digress bob’s We never found Bob’s ball par three hit it with an iron and we knew we saw right where it landed all like five of us walking around there caddies all all the Never found it he just dropped and hit so um yeah yeah I mean I think that’s the ball spotter thing is huge the other thing is you you know what you these guys they got I mean the grand stands would still be up in the under this scenario but most likely the people wouldn’t be out there right and there’s a lot of times where these guys they actually heard it referred to as a meat shield one time i thought that was like the classic I’ve never heard that before but a meat shield of where you just fire it into the people and and uh you know keep it somewhat in play but uh you know yeah examiners we don’t have that there’s no shield i’m going to ask you at the end of the day today what the leaderboard will look like and I’m not talking about names i’m talking about scores i think someone’s going to get to five or six it would it wouldn’t surprise me uh by the end of the day the way soft right now these guys are just so good i’m always betting on the golfer when there’s a soft golf course uh so the difference that we had I said that same thing last month at Quel Hollow the difference was and I I don’t know that they have subair here i haven’t heard any comments about subair i’ve asked several people and they don’t think that they have it here which is interesting since they just rebuilt these greens two years ago but um without the subair at Qual Hollow it was soft like this but the greens were rock hard and bouncing and it’s just not that’s not the case here they’re they’re they’re soft and they’re they’re holding and that kind of thing so I I I would expect that with that combination the whole thing being soft greens and fairways I think you’re going to see five six under but I it wouldn’t surprise me if the winning score is lower than today’s leading score does that make sense like I wouldn’t it wouldn’t surprise us if it started going up from there sure i’m going to throw you some names from our draft you can just react i’m not going to tell you who drafted who you ready react scott Sheffller Ben’s pretty good ben Griffin Minu Lee Colin Morawa Sebstraka Brooks Keepka Shane Lowry Bryson Desambo Ludvig Goldberg who went with Brooks Keepka me all right because I was trying because I’m tired of Rory Colin Scotty it’s boring nobody took Rory rory was passed on none of us wanted we saw the 78 i want to create a rule that you can only pick one guy once so if you pick him in the Masters you can’t pick him again for the others and Scotty Shuffler will be off the board because Sheffler like off the board entirely can’t pick that guy well but we’ve all So at the Masters at the Masters PK took Scott Sheffller i took him Scotty stop saying Scott i took Scott Sheffller at the PGA you’re bugging me and Bob took him this week so now the now we off the board my favorite point guard of all time was Johnny Stockton this doesn’t work with Brysony Dave Shambo does it dave Lock davey Lock what about Hey hey that but that spurs up that age-old debate with Irvy Johnson come on right i love Jackie Nicholas well so does so does Jack it’s his favorite son and Bob Jones he was really good going back they actually Bob Jones actually works he later in life he was Bob Jones so that works but you’re saying John Miller john Miller doesn’t have the same ring to it you’re not going to say “Hey remember John Miller back in 73?” John Miller right i have a story about that that a friend of a friend told me that uh he he knew a friend who was going to church and they were introducing the new people and the guy asked a question in in a class and he wanted to the teacher wanted to get to know the guys this is up where and he had his uh house up in Summit County somewhere up there and a guy says “My name’s John.” And uh afterward like five or six guys went up to the teacher what do you mean you don’t ask Johnny Miller what’s his name and he just said John he said I always call myself John he said my mother started calling me Johnny or something yeah that’s true story that’s true story hey if I’m seeing what I’m seeing here uh looks like JJ Spawn just hit it into the church pews so that’ll be fun haven’t seen one out of the church that’s good i mean because now we I brought up the religious angle and he’s in the church perfect perfect segue perfect segue yeah love it love it when a plan comes together oh Spy well good luck getting out of the church it’s always been difficult for me are you trying to get out is that what you said it’s been difficult to get out brian Taylor joining us here on the zone he will be on again later today and maybe he’ll talk about Benny Hogan so who knows this This could go on what time is it it’s 8:45 you got a good hour and 15 minutes to knock this one out i look forward to listening thank you Brian see you boys brian Taylor from Oakmont us Open coverage he’ll be on the shows all day long he and Bob going back and forth all day today all day tomorrow and of course they’ll have their show Saturday morning right here on the zone dj and PK John Cares covering the Boston Celtics for Boston Sports Journal host of Locked on Celtics on Boston West and what they’re saying in Boston about the Jazz with the latest move Austin coming out to Utah and are they really going to break up the band we’ll talk with him coming up at 9:00 dj and PK next we got RSL tickets to give away we’ll do that right after the break stay with us this is Jake Scott and Ben Anderson the Jazz named Austin A the new president of basketball operations obviously the job is twin that’s the most important thing and that’s what Austin age is going to be tasked with doing and he’s going to have to figure out how to turn this thing into a winning program again which it’s not right now the nepatism angle is obviously there it’s how he got his job in Boston it’s how he got this job in Utah when your dad is the CEO of a team and you come in as the president of basketball operations and you have the same last name obviously that plays a part however he has been doing this for 17 years with the Boston Celtics and has seen a championship team but I think people complaining about that are being naive nepotism happens all around us and you know what in basketball in particular it is rampant there’s at least half a dozen Nepo head coaches in the league right now and some are good and some are not the nice thing is that is ultimately how you get judged doesn’t matter who your dad was it’s did you win or not here Jake Scott and Ben Anderson every day from 10 to noon on 975 the KSL sports zone djp Kids 975 the zone we promised RSL tickets here they are caller 12 right now 801575 zone wins a four pack of tickets to watch RSL take on DC United Saturday night at America First Field be caller 12 right now 801575 zone and you win a four pack of tickets to the RSL game i was looking for a poll you just told me about Major League Baseball poll and I came across a stat from the finals last night that I didn’t know but it won’t surprise you no bench player in the NBA finals in the history of the finals has ever gone 10 points five assists and five steals in a single game until TJ McConnell did it in game three yeah that’s what we’re talking about we knew it was a big game for their bench unprecedented for him in 15 minutes yep really really strong performance from him obviously Matan scored 27 points at 22 minutes and all that overshadows Obie Toppin who was solid himself to had a big block down the stretch that is why they won the game right there explain in the last five minutes outscoring the Not surprising the way they were defending yeah they they were just crushing it yeah 49-8 was the bench scoring margin and that pretty much overpowers any other stat that you can find from that game i mean I really don’t care who wins uh but I was entertained particularly by those bench dudes and those guys are grinders nothing was ever handed to them they had to fight for everything that they got as I said McConnell went to Dukane and uh I think he was there when Shawn Miller was there at Arizona and I think that’s where Shawn Miller had gone and so there’s a connection there and he goes to Arizona which is obviously higher profile and he does it now now it’s common you know UVU is a feeder for the Big 12 right fact yeah well back then it wasn’t as much but it did happen uh it did happen that that those types of things uh went on uh it’s more pronounced now and then of course they’re immediately eligible and so he basically has to prove himself at the Dukane level and then he goes and he proves himself at the Pack 10 level and now he’s been in the NBA for nine seasons way to go that’s a great story and he’s making massive contributions in the NBA finals and they go up to two-1 they’re halfway home obviously and that’s what I like to see sure we all like to see the stars and they capture us and and Hallebertton with those game-winning shots and everything that he was doing obviously entertaining but that’s what is cool about a team game that that’s why I want to see everybody get that opportunity that’s why you know Lock talks about oh they ought to let Mike Trout bat five or six times no no i want to see the other guys those are my guys i can’t relate to Mike Trout you know what I mean i do know i do know what you mean when we were talking earlier when you were talking about that story you wrote about the uh supporting cast the supporting cast for Jordan and I brought up Cliff Leonson well I brought him up because he San Diego yeah he went to Morris High and I I guarded I guarded Cliff Le okay i was on the wing and he was a senior and I was a scrawny little sophomore and I double teamed him once we were doubling down from the wing like and I ran down there i literally thought this guy doesn’t care that I’m here and it doesn’t matter to him and he just spun away a fade away well he was a star then he was a Everybody in San Diego knew who he was he was the man yeah he went to Witch State went to the Bulls winning rings but just because you’re a star at that level Yeah but you need those types of guys man those those guys the role players you put them in a game it’s like they’re not it’s like they’re not even playing the same game so the difference between high school baseball player you and Mike Trout is light years or between Cliff Levston and me and all my teammates running in circles it was light years that’s why I think the Jazz have an opportunity to move some guys and get some valuable pieces back and when it’s all said and done you’re probably not winning with eight guys you drafted right i think the Pacers do they start I think they start two guys they drafted and three guys they acquired and I think their bench uh let’s see Hallebertton uh Naymith all acquired so Turner and Nemhard were drafted i think they were I know Turner was It seems like Turner’s name is included in trade talks every year because everybody wants him yeah right and there he is still sticking it out and you know for these guys that move around I’m watching this game you see Reggie Miller in a Mark Jackson jersey in the front row there’s something to be said for that man reggie Miller played entirely in Indiana and he has stake in this and that’s sort of cool it’s still his team yeah and I think of him as an LA guy but the Pacers are his team yeah hey yeah he moved back he lives in California now right uh but you know he went to Riverside and then played Yeah but his affection for the Pacers is undeniable so there’s something there’s something collegate about that and fans dig that type of stuff they like that they want they want you to be their guy yeah which is why it stings so bad when a player says they don’t want to be there i mean yeah here we were talking about Hayward yesterday but we had Barry Traml on and he brought up Kevin Durant seemed too good to be true and then it turned out he was and I think you disrespect Hayward okay you do all right i disrespect Hayward i disrespect the Knicks sometime we can do a list of people that I disrespect or teams that I disrespect he Hayward needs to be We gave Darren Williams his due here why wouldn’t we give Gordon Hayward because I can argue Darren Williams did worse public contrition he pushed Darren came on our show darren came on our show and talked about it and clearly didn’t feel good about it was remorseful so you want someone to show pain before you forgive them i don’t know that it’s pain it’s more some acknowledgement of what happened hayward just kind of went away and stayed away so I don’t think people are going to react the same way so he has to I think if he talked about it publicly I think he talked about it publicly he hasn’t come back d will come back d will made a noise in the community i haven’t seen him sitting at a game i mean has he come back to a game he may have flown through the airport he may have gone down to uh Arches taking the kids what are his kids’ names do you know you remember i don’t know i forget uh you used to have them at your fingertips life is short man brian Wilson just died we need to forgive gordon even without asking I forgive you okay it’s who I am you want like Town Square in one of those things where his head and arms are sticking out and we’re going to fogg them in the locks yes jeez the sports locks it’s a new feature in every arena and stadium ex players are there i don’t want blood oh man i’m going to start forgive Gordon fg john Carell covers the Boston Celtics for Boston Sports Journal he’s the host of Locked on Celtics he’s going to join us next as the Jazz becomes Celtics West
