TRADE RUMOR: Brooklyn Nets poised to CAPITALIZE on Kevin Durant sweepstakes? Phoenix Suns trade idea

coming up how can the nets benefit from another kevin durant trade sweep stakes i’ll answer that after this [Music] you are locked on nets your daily brooklyn nets podcast part of the locked on network your team every day welcome in to the lockdown nets podcast right here on the lockdown podcast network it’s your team the brooklyn nets every single day i’m eric slater brooklyn nets beauty reporter for clutchoints.com thank you for making me your first listen of the day this show is 100% free on all those great platforms today’s episode is brought to you by game time download the game time app create an account and use code lockdown nba for $20 off your first purchase and on today’s show i’m going to be breaking down how the nets can potentially use their cap space and maybe even a key veteran to help facilitate a kevin durant trade and acrew more assets and before we get into the specifics of what a deal could potentially look like involving the nets just want to intro with the kd trade sweep stakes the suns are reported to be motivated to get a trade done ahead of the nba draft which is uh just over one week away and the reason that that could involve the nets is because we all know the suns have been stuck in that second apron for this past season and since they acquired bradley beal and his monstrous uh contract and that second apron really has been has hamstring them and hamstrings teams who are over that threshold which is you know a set amount above the salary cap and the luxury tax and when you’re in that second apron it really enforces some harsh team building restrictions and some penalties uh you’re not allowed to aggregate contracts you can’t sign certain buyout guys you can’t use past trade exceptions your uh first round pick seven years out gets frozen isn’t able to be traded there’s just a lot of things that make it really difficult to build a roster if you’re in that second apron and with the suns you know trading durant and trying to stay competitive reportedly they have no intention of trading booker so if they’re trying to retool this roster around devin booker getting out of that second apron will allow them to make a lot of moves that are going to be necessary in order for them to reshape what their team looks like and the nets being the only team in the nba with significant cap space this off season they can create over 50 million depending on how they handle some of their roster decisions but that position uh is really advantageous for them because the suns may need them to help get out of the second apron whether they take on a contract in this kd trade whether they take on a contract from the suns an unwanted deal or they take on you know a salary filler coming from the team who’s getting durant them being able to do that them being able to absorb that into their cap space will be beneficial to the suns and allow them to dip below that second apron and in return the nets are going to want some assets and this is something that i’ve talked about uh we’ve seen shawn marks do this he has a history of doing this going back to 2017 you know he made some salary dumps he did one with the raptors involving deari carol obviously got d’angelo russell from the lakers alongside timothy moz he did another one where he got allan crab from the trailblazers so he has a history of doing this but this position with them being the only team in the nba with this cap space with the suns making this kd trade where they’re presumably going to get some assets back and needing to duck below that second apron it puts the nets in position to be able to get something and you know ultimately what that’s going to be is depending on the teams that are involved so the teams that are reportedly involved in this kevin durant put out three preferred destinations and that is the miami heat the san antonio spurs and the houston rockets the spurs are reportedly at top that list but the they have been a reluctant team in terms of giving up significant assets for durant because of their timeline you know they have women they have uh they just traded for dearron fox obviously they also have stfan castle they have some of these younger guys it’s on a different timeline than durant and the idea of them contending even if they get durant’s a little far-fetched so you know them giving up significant assets at this juncture of their timeline might not make the most sense so even though they are reportedly a top durant trade um destination list the athletic reported that they are the least aggressive of those three teams reportedly and the other two teams that man the miami heat and the houston rockets are reportedly actively engaging in negotiations with the suns uh shams trannia reported today uh he was on the pat mcafee show talking about it and he said that those two teams could be just a piece or two away from getting a deal done and that piece or two you know that could be significant because you know oftent times you know a piece or two what could that mean that could mean anything but they are actively engaged they seem motivated and the rockets are closer you know if they get durant they’re closer to contending for a championship the heat are really in desperation mode where they need to just make something happen so those are the two teams that seem the most motivated and from the nets it’s significant because all of those teams have some things to you know offer that could be of interest to the nets if they are to help facilitate if they are to you know help with a salary dump in that regard and nets fans really should be rooting for the the price on kdb kd to be driven up because the more that the suns get in this trade for kevin durant the more that they have to offer in a salary dump because if you’re looking at the net the suns just doing a straight salary dump right now before this kd trade trade even happens you know there’s certain guys you’re going to be looking at to be those salary dump guys i think grayson allen is probably the main guy in his contract which has three years left at around $17 million annually royce o’neal former net another guy he’s on a three-year contract for around $10 million annually but if they wanted the nets to take one of those guys they really don’t have anything to offer they have two first round picks that they can trade and both of them are you know they made that trade with the utah jazz during the season where they traded their 2031 pick and they got back three picks that were really you know crappy picks they got back the picks where they’re you know there three swaps and they’re the worst of the three possible swaps so they’re going to be low first round picks and i don’t think that those are going to be enticing or get it done in a salary dump for the nets so the more that they’re able to get back in this kevin durant trade the more that they’ll be able you know the more that they’ll have to be able to offer the nets to entice them to you know partake in a salary dump like this so coming out of the break going to talk about those teams and potentially what the the specific assets are that the nets could be targeting but before that want to tell you about our friends over at game time there’s nothing like the nba playoffs the intensity the buzzer beaters the fans losing their minds it’s the talking about the kevin durant trade sweep stakes and how the nets could potentially get involved and i named the three teams the san antonio spurs houston rockets miami heat going to start with the rockets and the heat because i think as i said they are the most aggressive and you have the most incentive to try to get a deal done and both of those teams have intriguing assets when you look at um the draft capital that those teams have we’re starting with the heat they have uh the 20th pick in this year’s draft they also have multiple young players who could be intriguing whether you talk about uh nola yoic whether you talk about haimey hakez kl wear those are all guys that could potentially be going uh to the suns in this deal and when you talk about you know picks and assets the nets potentially the 20th pick could be something that they could be interested in a deal whether they take on you know a salary filler like duncan robinson from the heat or they take on or the heat make a deal and the nets just take on grayson allen or they take on royce o’neal and they try to get that there’s potential frameworks that could make sense where the nets get that 20th pick they could even look to move up maybe they facilitate the salary dump and they move up from their 36th pick into 20 and then you have three picks in the top 20 you have eight 19 and 20 that’s something that could make sense if we’re looking at the houston rockets they have the 10th pick in this draft that could be intriguing they also have a bunch of other young assets you would think young players that would probably go to the suns in this deal the nets aren’t going to get you know a significant player like a like a jabari smith or a reed shepard or anything like that those guys would go to the suns but if the nets are you know willing to help facilitate a trade like this if they’re willing to take back one of the suns guys maybe they take back dylan brooks or they take back somebody from the rockets the rockets have that tenth pick maybe the nets they can try to move up into that 10th pick maybe they give up 19 and they move up to 10 or they give up 26 and they move up to 10 you know we’ve already heard some smoke about the nets in that 10th pick with um the rumor that bob winro of nets daily put out or the intel that he had i had him on to talk about that but that potential framework was cam johnson and um 19 to get 10 from the rockets potentially while taking on a bad contract so that framework could fit into you know the mold of this kevin durant trade but cam johnson i don’t think is the most likely guy to go i think nick claxton could be a guy who is involved in this i’m going to talk about that more on the last segment but that has been reported that the suns want to get a center back in this deal so if the suns you know maybe they get khal wear back from the heat but if they don’t get a center if they’re not able to get wear or they don’t get a center from the rockets end of this or the spurs end of it whoever claxton could be a guy who’s involved where maybe the nets are giving up claxton and they’re getting back a piece of what the uh return is for the for the suns you know whether it be that 10th pick whether it be the 20th pick whether it be the nets giving up one of their later picks and moving up to one of those picks there’s a framework that makes sense there where claxton could be involved should they do that i’m gonna talk about that in a little bit but the last team being the spurs you know i i started with the rockets and heat because they’re see they seem like the more um motivated teams right now but the spurs could be a really interesting team too because they have a lot to offer they have the 14th pick in this draft and that could potentially be something you know i put out a framework on twitter and it’s it’s also along the lines of you know what i said um previously with the nets taking on grayson allen but potentially there’s a three-team deal there with the nets take on grayson allen maybe they move from 27 or 36 up to 14 maybe they’re maybe nick claxton is involved in that and there’s other things that come into play there with the assets that the suns are getting but i do think that you know or i don’t even think it’s been reported that the suns are obviously trying to stay competitive without control of their future draft picks um mostly and if they’re trying to do that getting a center is going to be a priority for them they’ve wanted you know a rim running guy they want that guy that that um lob threat center alongside devin booker and they haven’t really had that this past season so if claxton’s a name where you could involve him there and you can get back something really enticing that’s something that could potentially make some sense for the net should they do that i’ll talk about that coming out of the break to close the show but before that want to tell you about our friends over drinkallipop.comlockdownba to claim your free can and find an lollipop near you there’s drinkallipop.com/lockdownba closing out today’s lockdown nets episode talking about the kevin durant trade sweep stakes and the nets’s potential to get involved uh while facilitating a salary dump but it might even go past salary dumps as i said in the prior segment i think nick claxton is a player who very well may be involved in this if the nets do get involved because the suns are looking for a center the suns are going to be desperately trying to stay competitive again um around devin booker as they retool the roster while giving up durant and the suns have been a team that are known to be aggressive matt ishbia there is aggressive maybe willing to make some rash decisions he said that they have no intention of you know rebuilding of bottoming out or anything they don’t have their picks but it just doesn’t seem like a direction that he’s interested in going and with that they’re going to need a center and if they’re not able to get one in this kevin durant trade uh from one of these other teams the nets could be involved and they could help facilitate using claxton and also salary dumps they could do both of those things at the same time but should the nets be giving up claxton i said you know earlier on um on an earlier podcast last week one talking about whether or not the nets should trade claxton this summer obviously it’s always going to depend on the price but i did say that i don’t think that this is the best time to be trading m claxton given that he’s coming off a down season he battled some injuries last year his production was down and also he’s on a descending contract so in the final two years of his deal it’s going to be more attractive because he’s at a lower number maybe he’s playing better by then and also it’s just going to be easier to trade you know as a matchable salary because his his number his salary is going to be lower the nets frontloaded it so he made the most out of the the most of any year of the contract in the first year this past season then this season he’s making the next most and then it goes down into the final two years so from that perspective it doesn’t make a ton of sense for this to be the time that you’re trading nick claxon some would say that you’re selling low on him but the caveat to that would be if you get a team like the phoenix suns who is kind of grasping at straws and is somewhat desperate to retool around devin booker is somewhat desperate to get a starting caliber center like that and they have potentially some of these assets coming in from the kevin durant trade if you’re able to even pick off one premium asset potentially a premium pick in this year’s draft that could all make it worth it so if you’re talking about the nets from that perspective with some of these picks that i talked about you know i’d be specifically looking at the heat um or not the heat the rockets and the spurs if the rockets are giving up that number 10 pick in this deal and the phoenix suns want nick claxton they want a ready-made player who can help them stay competitive around devin booker there is a pathway where maybe the nets get that 10th pick for giving up claxton and maybe they give up one of their later picks and they’re able to move up using that maybe they also involve a salary dump they give up claxton they take back a guy like grayson allen or whoever you want to say and they can get that 10th pick and you know whatever else there are multiple frameworks and there’s a lot of different minations of that where it could work same thing with the spurs with the 14th pick in this draft the nets are able to get a 14th pick pick up a second lottery pick in a draft like this that is you know just very well regarded the deeper we get into the draft process the more people are talking about you know how deep this draft is the quality of the players in it i’ve heard you know i said this on my podcast yesterday when i was talking with derek parker about late round gems and the guys that the nets could potentially find several people that i’ve spoken to have said that this is the deepest draft that they’ve covered in you know two three decades and that just speaks you know obviously to the quality of player that you could potentially be able to get in the late lottery so if the nets are at eight and they’re able to pick up a second lottery pick like this there could be some really good players available and i think that’s something that could be really enticing and while giving up nick claxton at this juncture it may not be the best time if you’re able to pick up an asset like that you might not be able to get anything better than that down the line you know a quality pick like that in a draft like this and you know also there’s the angle of them obviously helping facilitate the trade with the salary dump so claxton and the salary dump angle of it are two things that can work in tandem and i think it’s something that there’s just so many different possibilities of how the nets should be able to get into this i you know i haven’t said it yet but i’ve been just going through different potential frameworks and looking at it between the three teams that could be involved in this kevin durant sweep stakes i just think there’s so many different ways that the nets could pick up another um top 20 pick maybe even another lottery pick even outside of the kevin durant we talked about um the framework with bob of nets daily with the raptors and the rockets just in terms of maybe cam johnson being a fit there if they if the rockets want to go in a cheaper direction they don’t want to go and swing for uh kevin durant maybe cam johnson’s a guy and you go from 19 to 10 that’s a possibility so there’s just so many different ways that the nets could look to get involved in this and i think that there is leverage that they have from the the respect of these suns wanting to get out of the second apron some of these other teams you know maybe needing the nets to help facilitate these deals and it’s a position that you know you’re rarely going to be in talking about a team one team controlling all the cap space in the nba like this for an offseason and also the suns being in a position like this where they really need that team you know depending on who they’re trading with but a lot of different scenarios where they’re going to need that team it puts the nets in a really advantageous position and it’s one where i think they have a really good chance to come away with a premium asset um for their troubles you know so i think that that’s exciting from that perspective and the prospect of nick claxton being involved is something that i definitely think fans should be monitoring because i definitely think the suns are going to be trying to come away from uh this deal with a center and also below the second apron and those are two things as i said the nets can help out with both of those those things could work in tandem and you know there’s some exciting possibilities for the nets there but that does it for this episode of locked on nets thank you to all of you for tuning in and supporting the show be sure to like comment subscribe on youtube and wherever you can get your podcast whether apple podcast or spotify anything you can do to engage is much appreciated trying to build this channel gotten a lot of positive feedback and i appreciate all that but the nets have a lot they’re going to have a busy next few
