Tommy Balcetis OUT | Denver Nuggets GM search continues days before NBA Draft
assistant GM Tommy Balchettis will not return to the Denver Nuggets His contract will not be renewed What does that mean for the GM’s search what are we hearing on that front plus what if what if doing nothing could be a good thing all that more on Lock on Nuggets You are Locked on Nuggets your daily Denver Nuggets podcast part of the Locked On podcast network Your team every day Welcome to Locked On Nuggets your daily Denver Nuggets podcast part of the Locked On NBA Your team every day Thank you so much for tuning into the show where we go five days every day doing our best to cover these Denver Nuggets as best as we can Today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel Right now new customers get $200 in bonus bets when your first $5 bet wins My name is Ryan Blackburn I am the lead writer over at Mile High Sports uh doing the Pickax and Roll podcast over there Did a very positive optimistic podcast over there as penants for Sunday night’s uh show Here he is Matt Moore uh who is going to put me through the ringer in the third segment of this show uh as we talk about some some more positive things and whether doing nothing is actually good We’ll get into it all Very excited about it Matt Moore of course you can read over at the Denver Dig HP Basketball Substack and the Action Network doing all of the great things over there Matt we got the news on Monday night I believe or Monday during the day Tommy Belchettis will not be retained by the Denver Nuggets And kind of a weird situation where it leaked out there didn’t necessarily know if it was real or not but it turns out yes it is real And unfortunate because Tommy has been there for a long time ever since 2013 Somebody that you and I have both gotten to know and he’s a good dude He’s he’s at least talking with us been a very good person to work with and work around And it’s too bad that he’s gone Yeah I you know I’m I’m bothered by it because of the timing of it where they wait this long in order and then let tell me about shadows go I think that that’s not a great look Uh still waiting for other decisions in the front office structure We’ll see This is going to be a different organization Like that’s one thing that’s clear here Um I do think that Tommy was always a guy who tried to balance the analytic and cold decision-making side of it and from the league perspective without getting caught up in the drama like he was never somebody that was like pushing behind the scenes and making all sorts of power play moves and that’s not great for his career but it’s really good for I think running an organization and so Tommy to me was about the right things Uh so it’s a bummer that that he’s been let go It is going to be interesting here because all right so Bettis is gone Tenzer still remains as of now We’re still waiting to hear what that’s going to look like Tenzer’s his specialty is cap That makes sense Under the new CBA you’re going to want to want to navigate that okay but you need somebody with like connections and relationships and those types of things And Tensor has some of those but you’re probably going to need more of that And then also with Steven Graham being let go player development’s being reshaped Like this does look like it’s it’s starting to look like it’s going to be more of a new program even if Tenzer is ultimately the hire It’s an interesting way to look at it Um we we’ve talked about how like player-wise things might not be super like like they might stay stagnant They might not do anything And you you’re again we’re going to talk about that in the third segment how that might be a good thing Uh but around the organization the head coach is gone the GM is gone Uh you are bringing in some new player development guys as you mentioned you’re you’re getting some new voices in the room and that can have a like it can have the desired effect of keeping things fresh It can have the undesired effect of bringing in new voices doesn’t always mean a good thing So it’s going to be interesting to see what ultimately pans out from this Uh are you expecting a a large voice at this point to kind of oversee this thing because I I think I am at this point Yeah So I think that that’s that’s something that we probably need to break down a little bit further here And like that means it be probably the the the crux of this next like segment and a half right is okay I don’t think anybody is enthused about the end Like nobody’s like Tenzor would be great now I don’t think anybody’s like Tenzer would be terrible Okay because Ben’s a smart guy Ben’s done a good job with the Nuggets He’s well regarded He’s got a good reputation Um there is this idea of like a known voice or a bigger personality being a better kind of idea Um so I want to ask you as a Nuggets fan Okay What kind of voice do you want here do you want cold and clinical do you want flashy and big presence do you want thoughtful and considerate do you want uh organizational strength as building like a group of people to all do their jobs like a great manager what are you looking for for whoever is going to be in charge yeah Two things Um the first and foremost thing that Denver needs is somebody who is a unifier throughout the organization Somebody who is going to like Tim Connelly was a very great example of this somebody who wasn’t always about their his own personal desires and like how he would feel about certain situations Sometimes when he and Michael Malone buted heads and they did he would just kind of move out of the way He would he would he would allow Michael Malone to kind of have his space a little bit and he would work with them He wouldn’t work against him and whoever it is they’re going to need to be able to work with some pretty opinionated people And in a very stressful environment with a whole bunch of pressure with Nicole Joic being uh I I think Nicole Yokic is probably going to present a little bit more of a challenge in terms of coaching GMing over the course of these next five years than he certainly has in his first 10 Um I also think that Denver desperately and I mean desperately needs a general manager who is going to be willing to challenge ownership’s preconceived notions on how they think things should be done and go the other direction because I think that that’s one thing that gets kind of convoluted here ownership has a version of things a belief of things on how the organization should be run and that I just don’t agree with And I tend to think that’s bringing in somebody that can challenge them on it and is willing to make tough decisions is very very important here Let’s break that down a little bit more on the other side because there’s a lot there that I want to get into All right then let’s do this on the next episode or the next segment of Locked on Nuggets The NBA playoffs are in full swing and every night delivers highlight worthy performances major momentum shifts and can’t much for tuning into the show folks Hit that like button hit that subscribe button Would really really appreciate it uh you wanted me to expand a little bit upon uh my thoughts earlier in terms of I think Denver needs a general manager who can I think give the Kronis not not even Kronis like this is owner Governor Stan Kunky and vice chairman Josh Kroni um good job exactly what they need to like what they need to hear as opposed to just going along with the structure of what they’re asked to do uh what is interesting about that to you okay So does this extend beyond just whether or not to keep the four the core four is that primarily what you’re talking about or are there other things that you want them challenging them on there are other things Um these are things that like the practice facility should have been done by now Like frankly that’s that’s something that should have been a thing three to five years ago Denver’s last They they are the only team I believe in the NBA that doesn’t have this And I know that real estate in Denver is really tough Hey we got a press release about the uh got a big press release about the the real estate project and the river mile and everybody being good on the Eliches front but we haven’t really gotten a lot of information from Denver otherwise And I just I need to know from them that it is a priority to get a second championship is a priority to get future championships This should be a championship organization and everything that we are seeing really frankly across all of the KSC teams is that they’re good with one title And I think that that seems a little bit tough It’s it’s unfortunate for fans especially fans in Denver that are fans of both the ABS and the Nuggets Like it’s I know that the ABS they should have probably won a little bit more this year than they than they did but it just feels like there’s been a lot of complacency in that regard So I don’t think you want an an executive that’s going to do that Ryan Um and the reason is that person if they’re in an adversarial position they’re not going to get anywhere You have to have somebody who’s going to how can I put this massage Who’s going to work with them who’s going to be somebody that they can trust who’s somebody that they can believe in You don’t want somebody who’s like a fire starter We got to get a practice facility That’s not going to work Stan Cromy’s going to go tell you to screw off and jump off a bridge Says money So you need somebody who can navigate who can communicate and who can negotiate That’s what you need right like you don’t you don’t want somebody who’s going to come in and be like “You won a championship Cool It was a week You didn’t beat anybody above 50 wins This core is not good enough You need to trade these guys.” Josh Crock is going to be like “You haven’t been here You don’t know You don’t know what Mike’s been through You don’t know how what we’ve been through with Jamal You don’t know what makes Joker tick You don’t want that right you want someone who’s going to like work in concert with them to move it in the direction that you want In reality that that practice facility is not going any like this is one of the problems is that we look at the practice facility as a nuggets issue and a nuggets question and a nuggets uh property and they view it as a KSC property And that’s different because it has different priorities based off of the broader KSE picture right like but look I I I I see you shaking your head and being upset but like you got to work within the confines because you can’t get a new owner Like you can’t do it There’s nothing like this this team’s not going anywhere for a while right maybe We’ll we’ll see Maybe But they could you know what they they could frankly they could build the new real estate and just not game plan for a stadium and then just decide you know what we’re going to move the team to Vegas Like that’s that’s something that could be on the table Um maybe I don’t think so I mean it out to like DIA And the other thing I will say is like uh as much as look there is a it is important I think for Nuggets fan media to continue to say how much of a disgrace it is that the team doesn’t have a practice facility It is important for analysts and observers and people who cover the team to be objective about the fact this team prioritizes spending only in the areas that it thinks it’s worth it rather than being like we’re going to spend to win Whatever it is that we need we’re going to spend to win That is not this organization’s approach And when they try and tell you that like you we should rebut them and be like that’s not true That’s not true We have evidence of that otherwise I just have problem accepting that Like why do you have to choose why do you have to choose where the money goes like these guys are they’re worth billions and billions of dollars Like what do you mean oh yeah No I mean I’m not saying you have to choose I’m saying you should continue to be like “No no you need to spend in order for this team to win and be and be competitive.” I’m not saying to accept it at all But I am saying what you don’t want to do is you don’t want to hire a GM or or a president of basketball operations who’s gonna get phased out because he doesn’t get along with KSC That’s fine I I totally I get that And like look you you want somebody who can affect change And the way to affect change is to work within the construct of what you are given and and try to make it better for the next person and the next person and the next person Like I’m going to let you take this one John Fischer says no wrong This team doesn’t have role players to help Jogic Forget about the practice facility Get me good players You want a ticket they might uh they might be able to recruit some uh some other free agents if they had some facilities that they could be proud of They have the best player in the world and people aren’t flocking here to sign up You had Wes Matthews you had Jay Crowder you had all these guys go to Milwaukee Wisconsin to sign up to play with Giannis You can’t get a vet You can’t get a buyout You can’t get anybody Do you know why it’s not as simple as a practice facility It’s not only that but that’s part of the picture here man Like not everybody let me put it this way Not every NBA player is like “Oh I’ll do anything just to play with Nicole Joic.” That’s how I know fans feel they should be is “Oh gosh I get to play with Nicole Joic.” And those guys are like I want I have my career my body my interest my business That’s what they’re interested their lives That’s what they’re interested in So you gota be able to manage that That’s all I’m saying That’s why the practice matters Also had some uh significant injuries to Nuggets players over the course of these last few years Uh and I know the training staff is also not necessarily something that they are are fully invested in Tony Be has been in here from time to time yelling about the crown time to time It’s every day We need to get a petition together to demand the Cronis sell the franchise is what he says Um I want to say this and I think it’s important Okay I understand how you feel about the Kronis and I am not like if you notice I am trying to be on the fence I do I want to be on the line I’m not on the cranky side I’m not against the Kronies I’m not purposefully antagonistic I’m in the middle I understand their priorities and how they look I’m trying to understand how KSC works every day What I will tell you is the Malofas were the worst ownership group I’ve ever seen And Becan saved that team and kept it in Sacramento and he’s been a disaster Matt Ishvia came in with all this new energy and all this excitement and done all these great things for the fans and the team is a disaster So what I’m telling you is as always you need to be certain that what’s on the other side is better It’s okay if you feel that David Alaman is going to be better than Michael Malone I think that’s probably true at this point as long as far as like what Malone was that last year Like David’s going to be a better coach next year than Malone was last year That’s that’s hard not to be like it was tough right um but with ownership too And it’s like I’m not trying to tell you not to want better things for your team I’m just saying be selective and understand that these decisions are not what I don’t like is when fans are just like change it I’m like okay But if you do that there’s consequences going forward Which is what I want to talk about in the last segment Ryan But before we get there I have to ask you this Is Bob Myers the best name you think that they can get uh I don’t think they can get Bob Myers because they’re not going to pay for him Let’s say that they could Let’s say let’s say that we’re wrong and they’re willing to pay for it Let’s say that theoretically that’s true Is Bob Myers the best name yeah I think so I mean there there is a Tim Connelly hasn’t picked up his option for next season either So that’s another name that I think that’s a that’s a major debate as to which of those two guys would be better for this franchise in this moment I think Who’s the other guy tim Connelly Oh yeah Yeah Well yeah because he hasn’t picked up his option for next year Um yeah So that’s that’s something to manage I will I will go ahead and like respond to the So I reached out uh to people to try and get word on just like him’s thoughts on this and and nope Just as a sign of like sometimes people just don’t return my texts and calls and that’s how that goes So it’s all quiet in Minnesota right now For for what it’s worth I do want to share one thing before we stop this Um I heard earlier today and I’m I’m going to be as kind of general as possible that very few people in the organization know anything about who the next general manager is going to be Like this is not something where a lot of people are knowing the information or with and are withholding it This is something where nobody really knows and it’s why you’re not getting any information Nobody is talking about it Nobody is sharing a lot of information I’ll say well okay so there’s two things here Um one the KSC circle of trust has always been really good about being careful with its information and two the exception to that was Adrian Woraski who retired So um they should however reach out to somebody and I would prefer it to be a local Go to the post that’s fine Bennett’s great you want to go to the gazette that’s great If anybody is a great reporter you want to go to DMV and talk to Adam terrific There’s nobody who’s a better voice of the fans than Adam You and I would agree on that Like he’s the guy If you want to go to us I will absolutely capitalize on it But but you should open up a line of communication because it does feel like there’s a more of a disconnect Even if it’s through an intermediary I think KSC needs to do a little bit more with connecting to local media as a way to reach Denver fans Um up next how about we talk a little bit about the importance of doing nothing and why that might not be such a bad thing Ryan we’ll be right back here on Locked on Nuggets Folks been drinking my lollipop very excited for this particular read because Lollipop they’re a new kind of soda made for people who love the taste of classic soda but want something that’s supports their health a little bit more with just two to five grams of sugar and nine grams of prebiotic fiber in every single can Lollipop is reimagining soda in a way that’s better for your gut Uh basically like I I I mean people can probably tell this I love soda It’s it’s a big vice of mine It’s something that I really enjoy But this is a really good alternative And I I like this one but I also really like the grape soda a lot That That one is great It’s It’s got four grams of sugar Like four That’s a fantastic alternative if you’re looking for something that is a like has the taste that you’re looking for but is just got healthier macros a lot better of a situation Uh get a free can of lollipop Just buy any two cans in store and they’ll reimburse you for one Head to drinkallipop.com/locktonnba to claim your free can and find lollipop near you That’s drinkallipop.com/lockedonba We’ll be right back here on Locked onnuggets All right final segment of Locked on Nuggets Thank you so much for tuning into the show Matt you scared me with this one I’m I’m a little bit nervous Uh this is this is one that anybody that has listened to the show it knows that I don’t necessarily feel great about the idea of not doing a single thing this offseason Matt you seem to have at least the inkling of a different take here Uh it’s not a take right it’s just the ideas behind team building to me are the most interesting thing in in in the NBA They’re very interesting to me Is how do you build a team how do you build a culture and what I want to say is this So right now great plug for Lollipop Um right now every team is trying to clear the books so that they can enter and get to a better place to trade and add players in free agency and trade Next summer every team is going to try and clear cap space at whatever cost to get in on the 2026 free agency class Okay What if the best thing for the Nuggets is to target this trade deadline it’s that don’t try and get it done now when everything’s at a premium and nobody’s and everybody’s looking to move Like the Spurs want to trade the number two in multiple picks for an upgrade to help with women right now The Blazers are ready to compete The Magic just traded for Desmond Bane Memphis is trying to clear money to get Jiren Jackson Jr The Nets are taking on salary and are looking to try and put themselves in pole position for 2026 Uh the Bucks think that they’re keeping Giannis but they might not The Warriors want another superstar to add to their core All of these teams are all maneuvering for the next 14 days If you add pieces that you get now there’s very little ways for them to do this but if they get locked in right if they were to expune another asset the 2031 say the 2031 pick to try and get an upgrade right now whatever asset that they would get back would only help on the margins because they’re not going to trade the core 4 If we if that changes that’s great This is different If if they’re entering this summer being like we’re going to move they’re going to move Michael Par Jr and Jamal Murray Cool Or they’re open to it They’re not even like our understanding is that they’re not open to it It would be it’d be different if it was like they’re not looking to trade them but they’re going to take offers but our understanding is it’s like nope we’re good Starters are staying the starters Uh they’re going to extend Christian and we’ll see what how that goes Um what if they keep everything the powder dry so to speak the limited powder that they have the 2031 they’ll be able to trade the 2032 potentially as well can’t trade them both but 2031 to 2032 once the the new year kicks over Then okay then we get into the season David Adelman’s able to rehab the value on Zeke Naji or and like you you can act like this is insane It’s not It’s not like insane for Dario Sar to have a bounceback season That would not be like insane It’s unlikely It’s almost definitely not gonna happen but like it’s happened before where guys have like Nick Batum was like out of the league was like not gonna go anywhere and then all of a sudden it’s become Nick Batum and Dario Sar is not going to become Nick Batum But my only point is like you don’t know what Julian Straw makes a huge leap and then you’ve got an opportunity here Pton Watson makes a huge leap and you’ve got an opportunity What if instead of targeting changes right now for the next for the first 45 games of the season the Nuggets target the trade deadline to get ahead of that 2026 operation for them to be able to reshape the team for the next three to four years I don’t hate it I don’t I don’t hate it And isn’t that annoying that it’s actually like not It’s pretty good logic Well of course because here’s the thing If the Nuggets are stuck trying to like it’s like trying to punch a wall repeatedly like you you’re trying to find the right trade trying to find the right trade trying to do it and you then you force something and you just hurt yourself because you’re not getting the right value and the right resources at the right time for for what you’re trying to accomplish And any Michael Porter trade that they do they’ll probably get worse Any any Jamal Murray trade if they were to do that they’re probably getting worse So it is kind of a take a step back to take a couple steps forward I maintain that they could do both That they could continue to break up said core and try to set themselves up for 2026 whether it’s the trade deadline or free agency Um but I understand it and I do agree with it Uh there are so many factors I think that could pull them in this direction One of them is the idea that yeah you do need to play Jaylen Picket You do need to play Zeke Naji in order for those guys to look like valuable assets to people And I get that Totally totally understand that Um Grace says here uh I hear Matt on this but the Christian extension decision looms given this team’s history And I agree with that too because once you give an extension you lose the cap space in that subsequent free agency year So the problem is that I don’t think that Denver would be active in 2026 free agency They might be active in 2026 trades at that point but certainly not enough to actually create cap space So I’m not as worried about Christian Here’s the thing to kind of put you at ease They’re not keeping Jokic on this contract Jamal on this contract MPJ on this contract Aaron on this contract and then giving Christian 30 million It’s not happening That’s not going to happen One of those guys is going that’s it Period End dot They will not pay to have those guys Now I’m of the opinion you can only have two guys making over 40 45 million and then from there you need one guy making 30 million and then everybody else has got to be 10 to 12 So like I disagree entirely with like any construct here Like unless you’re going to do Jamal Mike and Aaron in one deal to try and acquire another 4550 million superstar and I don’t know what that looks like And then Christian’s your 30 million guy I just don’t like the build Like just me personally I don’t like the build Uh by the way John Fisher JPEG punting on another prime Joker If you do that then you truly don’t deserve him There it is You not we There it is I’m sorry Not sorry The future talk is depressing when you have Jokic in his prime Haven’t you wasted it enough it’s I can’t believe I’m doing this I can’t believe it’s my fault that the Nuggets aren’t active enough on the trade market Can’t believe I I don’t have the poll Matt It’s just uh It’s just despicable I I just think it’s it’s um important for uh us to address Oh that’s a Jamal Murray one Uh FYI the Nuggets are not trading Nicole Joic until he requests a trade They will never do it unless forced to There’s no point in talking about it before he does so if he ever does So thanks management So I have like this is another take that has gone out there that you have discussed that I discussed with somebody else earlier today There is the idea of just doing a gap here and telling Nola get surgery on the wrist to take your time coming back Try to clear the books a little bit Play guys like Pton Watson Christian Brown Julian Straw their extensive minutes enough that they are developed and comfortable creating for themselves on the consistent basis Be bad collect a 2026 firstrounder that’s a pretty high value asset and then like either use that to draft and get a another high ceiling player that they don’t really have on the roster or go use that asset to acquire it But that would take a lot of buyin from a lot of different people It’s not something that I expect to actually happen but it is an idea that has been thrown out there Tony B says “I’d like to see Joker refuse to sign an extension right now which is what uh Ryan has has suggested He needs to demand better put pressure on the Konies.” Ryan here’s my problem with that thought process What does that look like like here I do have this question Do we really think that there’s a magic because this is kind of Swiper’s thing is that he thinks that there’s like a magical sweetheart Josh Giddy for Alex Caruso deal that they’re just choosing not to do Do you feel like that’s it because I feel like all of their assets are distrusted I I think I disagree with you on their ability and willingness to trade Mike prior to now Um and that there was an opportunity that they were willingly said no to and just like decided hey we we are not doing this Um but in terms of the Josh Giddy Alex Cruso deal the Josh Giddy deal is like that’s like if Christian Brown was to be traded on his rookie deal not necessarily if uh if like Aaron Gordon was traded or Michael Porter was traded Michael Porter like you said distressed asset Jamal Murray uh probably a negative value contract Um and that’s like look that that’s an unfortunate place for Denver to be But do I think that Denver is missing out on these deals no They just don’t exist for Denver because they don’t have the assets to do it Would you feel better if it was like they were constantly like “Yeah we tried over and over again to trade Mike and no one would take him.” Would you feel better uh if I if I heard that behind the scenes and somebody was telling me that privately then I would feel better If they were projecting that publicly absolutely not Okay So you want them to indicate to us that they’ve tried to trade him and can’t Yeah Just give me at least some confidence that you’re actually trying to do the thing And not not specifically trading Mike but just like hey we’re trying to make the team better It is better to try and fail than not to try at all essentially Yeah Like I I agree with that I think you should be actively seeking to improve pretty for but for reality isn’t there like no discernable difference between the two um no But one makes me feel better So that’s uh fair enough That’s going to do it for Lock on Nugget Appreciate you guys being with us Uh make sure you keep it here We’ll be with you all week We’ll talk more We’ll react whenever the new whatever of whatever for the Denver Nuggets is announced and hired Uh we’ll have more on trade talk this week as well as reaction to the NBA Finals wrapping up Thanks for joining us Appreciate you guys being with us We’ll see you guys again next time on Lockdown Nuggets
