I Don’t Understand The Bulls Obsession With Billy Donovan

i’ve made multiple videos on Billy Donovan over the course of my time since starting this channel so I won’t revisit the background story and what led up to Billy Donovan being hired by the Chicago Bulls and then of course his tenure obviously in coaching this team over the last 5 years and while I don’t think Billy Donovan is the right coach for the Bulls something I talked about years ago I also don’t think he’s a terrible coach as a Bulls fans make him out to be that said it is a little odd how much this organization still clings on to Billy Donovan and is adamant about keeping him around for a coach who has only made the playoffs once in his 5 years with the Bulls especially given the talent level he had on this roster and the expectation that they were going to be winning now Billy Donovan has now had a longer tenure than Tom Thibido did in his time with the Bulls despite Donovan not even having half the success that Tibs did in Chicago like the fact that Billy Donovan is the third longest tenure coach in the entire NBA right now only behind Steve Cerr and Eric Bolstra is absolutely mind-boggling to me considering there have been coaches who have produced better results than Donovan has and have been hired and fired during that time period that Billy Donovan has been with the Bulls and even though I’ve always said well Billy isn’t going anywhere he’s staying in Chicago not because of his performance though but rather it’s because the Bulls are cheap and they’re not going to fire him while he’s under contract and pay him to not coach to me I thought that was the biggest reason why Billy Donovan’s job was safe when if he was coaching for any other team he would have been fired by now and I thought his job was safe because the Bulls gave him that stupid secret extension and they didn’t want to have to pay the salary of two coaches in a season like they did with Tom Thibido when they fired him while he was still under contract and also like they did with Fred Hoyberg and yes even Jim Bolan the Bulls simply put weren’t going to go through that route again and when we learned that the Knicks had fired Tom Thibido were reaching out to teams to get permission to interview their respective head coaches I thought this is the Bulls out if the Knicks contact the Bulls about Billy Donovan this is how they get out of the Billy Donovan contract without having to fire him and can move forward with a new coach as they embark on this rebuild but lo and behold the Knicks did in fact reach out to the Bulls to get permission to interview Billy Donovan which I’ll be honest I wasn’t sure if that would actually happen to begin with but they did they did contact the Bulls about talking to Billy and to my surprise and shock although I guess I really shouldn’t have been that surprised the Bulls denied their request to speak to Billy Donovan now Casey Johnson reported yesterday that this wasn’t fully closed and was still a fluid situation where the Knicks could circle back on Billy Donovan in other words maybe try to give them something in return to pry Billy Donovan away from the Bulls but then he followed that up in reporting this morning that the Knicks are in fact now focusing on those coaching candidates that are available and aren’t currently employed by another team and stated that Billy Donovan is here to stay in Chicago now look the way I look at it is this we don’t know all the happenings behind the scenes what those discussions looked like when the Knicks contacted the Bulls but if what we know is true this could have been an opportunity for the Bulls to realize they actually had some leverage in a given transaction and try and extract some value for one of their assets which yes a coach can be one of your assets it’s rare but there have been instances throughout history where a team has traded a coach to another team in exchange for draft capital or players the Bulls in my view should have realized hey the Knicks have reached out to all these teams they contacted the Wolves about Chris Finch the Mavs for Jason Kid Rockets to inquire on Eime Goka Quinn Snider from the Hawks i mean they reached out to all these teams and received a firm rejection that they couldn’t contact their coach if I’m the Bulls I see this i see a team that’s desperate i see the Knicks didn’t really think this through when they fired Tomato realized they weren’t going to get an upgrade of a coach and are now scrambling i see this and I say “Hey if you want Billy Donovan you need to make it worth our while give us a pick hell even a couple second round picks since the Knicks don’t really have any picks to trade considering they blew all those on the Kell Bridges.” But instead of recognizing this the Bulls said “No we want Billy Donovan.” Again we don’t know if the Bulls in fact demanded anything in return and the Knicks said you know no thanks we don’t want Billy that bad but I would venture to say that if that were the case it would have come out in the media’s reporting and if the Bulls weren’t interested in doing that that they felt the need to keep Billy Donovan so bad that even getting something in return for him wasn’t enough the question is why why is it that this front office values Billy Donovan so much because look I get it i get that they’re probably not going to get much of an upgrade over Billy Donovan when you look at the landscape of available coaches in the NBA and yes while we have been criticizing Billy Donovan for his role in coaching this team over the last 5 years you have to acknowledge and recognize that he is wellliked by the players he is great at building relationships and relating to his players which is very important these days in the NBA when you see a lot of great coaches who are basketball masterminds when it comes to the X’s and O’s but are not good when it comes to the relationship with their players a guy like Mike Malone comes to mind and a big reason why he was fired so late in the season and to Billy’s credit he has adapted and adjusted well with what he’s been given especially this past season with a new look team and changing the overall offensive scheme to fit his player skills like yes I’ll concede he’s not a bad coach there are things he does well and should be valued for but he’s not some elite coach that you protect at all costs especially given the current direction of the Bulls in heading down this path of rebuilding whether they admit that’s what they’re doing or not to me it would behoo the Bulls to look for a change in the coaching staff to lead this team on their upcoming rebuild a coach that is going to focus on player development and help them through this youth movement yes we can say well hey the grass isn’t always green on the other side but at the same time it’s good to have a fresh pair of eyes a new perspective when you’re heading down a new path for this franchise which is what the Bulls are on right now whether they want again to admit it or not but yeah I mean I think at the end of the day we all know Billy isn’t going anywhere and reports/ discussions coming out of the combine were that there was maybe even talk of an extension in the works which would be absolutely insane to me if you opt to extend Billy beyond his current contract where he hasn’t proven he can take this team to the next level so yes I won’t be shocked if at some point next season we learn that Billy Donovan was in fact given another secret extension over the summer that was kept quiet for some unknown reason and the Bulls stick with Billy for another 5 years after this yeah I don’t get it i really don’t get this franchise’s obsession with Billy Donovan you would think he was like Greg Papovic at this point with the way they praised this guy and refused to let him go anyway let me know what you guys think of the recent news surrounding Billy Donovan let me know in the comments as always be sure to subscribe and I will see you in the next one

  1. Far be it for me to defend anything the AKME does, but keeping Billy is the right move. Billy is a rebuild coach that knows how to work with college kids and let them develop. With good players at the right positions in his offense he can get you to the finals. Billy needs a good PF to make his traditional offense work well, this team hasnt had that. He needs a good PF that has some awareness to make his Traditional style of defense work, bulls havent had that. I blame the front office for this mess far more than the coach. Forcing Billy to play x2 #3 options (Zach and Debo) instead of developing the young players is primarily why we are in this position to where this team has not had a legit#1 guy since Drose.. Thats not the coach fault, he gonna play who the front office spends the money on. His hands are tied in a majority of cases in that regard.

  2. As long as you don't rock the boat and do exactly as you're told your job is safe with Jerry and Michael

  3. Billy is average. He’s also the third longest tenured coach in the league while the other two are multiple time champions. That speaks volumes about how serious the Bulls are as an organization

  4. It’d be interesting if they offered a trade to the knicks for Donovan, something like 2nd round pick compensation. It’s happened before with doc rivers I believe

  5. Billy has said he talks to Jerry often and the front office likes the working relationship they have with him. Plus Billy is good with speaking to the media and takes some of the questions AKME should be taking.

This is a chance for AK to hire his boy Mike Malone or a young upcoming coach like Chris Quinn.

  6. The bulls WANT a middling coach, who’ll have flashes of good showings, the only way anything will change is if people just stop going to games, which wont happen, we may be middling forever lol

  7. So many times they have balked at the chance to get additional draft picks. A dumb organization run by dumb people.

  8. If they want to court superstar level talent in free agency in the future, stability is a good look. Remember the reputation this team’s front office had from Krause to Gar and Pax? You don’t do that to a coaching legend like Billy. Creating a good culture on a team starts with a good coach.

  9. The way the Reinsdorks operate, they hold on to people well because they know who their YES men are.

Jerry probably says to these guys, “You are like family here” schtick.

  10. It's because everyone gets along. I imagine there is a sense of connection when the fanbase is upset with them. They feel like they can all stick together, that is why the shooting coach was fired. He spoke up, AKME hate anyone who doesn't fall in line. Billy falls in line. End of story!

  11. Can't wait for us to realize that Billy Donovan got a 5 year extension on his contract…..1 year and 6 months later after the fact

  12. I think they’re trying to build culture and continuity
    And firing coaches kills culture
    But then again
    They fired Peter patton
    So idk lmfao

  13. They treat this guy like he’s Popavich. Denying a guy the chance to go to a team ready to compete when we don’t even know what direction we’re going in when he in fact came to Chicago because he didn’t want to rebuild in Oklahoma. I hate this front office so much.

  14. The way I look at it is, the Knicks can’t find a coach right now they see suitable for their team. A team that just made it to the eastern conference finals and has star players on the roster. If the Knicks can’t find a coach, there’s no way we’d find someone. At this point, the players are trending in a positive direction with a coach they respect. Billy has had an uphill battle since he’s gotten here.

  15. not that i think anything will change next season but bd DOES have a talent for utilizing younger players more so than getting vets to fall in line

  16. No team in the league is ever going to let another team interview their coach while still under contract. That'd be an insane show of bad faith. This isn't the NFL, where you have 200 assistant coaches who can take over. The Bulls could fire Billy tomorrow and it still makes sense to say no to the Knicks in this situation. You're never going to give any team an out like that while they just fucked themselves over.

  17. Billy NEVER had a team that could make the 2nd round.

Not the biggest Billy fan, but he's the least of my issues wit this team. Let's get a sustainable and good roster. Then see how far Billy can take it.

  18. The last half of this season, when he finally had a younger team that bought into his system and players that worked within his system, they had like the 3rd best record in the east.

  19. This dude is a one trick pony. That’s the problem. And the league has figured his ahhh out. No in game adjustments. Ever. Better coaches have gotten axed for doing so much better than him.

  20. I do not understand why the bulls front office love Billy Donovan so much, either. He won two titles in Florida, but that was college. As a bulls coach, he has not improved the win columns.

  21. I don’t love Billy Donovan as a coach… but I feel the need to defend him in this case. When given the kind of roster he prefers, he’s performed very well. I think his lack of success falls more on AKME.

He clearly likes multiple playmakers on the floor, and to play with pace and shooting. He’s said so tons of times. And when given Lonzo plus Zach and Demar etc, we were great. Same when given Giddey plus Coby and Matas etc.

I think he deserves a chance to build this team if Giddey stays, esp after the end of last year. I hate to see coaches get fired before they even get a chance to do the thing they do. That’s like giving Thibs a team with no defenders. Or like giving Hoiberg a team with no shooting and 3 ball stoppers… (not saying he would’ve been a great coach at all but we never even got to see!)

  22. It's because they don't want to work. Or rather, they don't have the ability to pivot.

The other part of it is pride. They took the compliment of somebody else wanting their coach and just let it fill them with pride and ego, instead of going through a proper valuation.

  23. Bulls ownership plan: hire an incompetent GM to hire a terrible coach and fire a good coach (Peter Patton for having a dissenting opinion) to defer all accountability for success to their employees.

But hey there’s some hope Bulls fans. In 9 years the Reinsdorfs have agreed to relinquish and sell ownership of the White Sox to a new billionaire owner. What a soul crushing move to announce to a fan base they are stuck with the same ish for another 10 years. Also, unfortunately the Bulls have been a goldmine cash cow I don’t see them letting go of.

Maybe Kevin Warren can go to the Bulls after the Bears get their stadium to cleanup the Reinsdorf’s 🐂 💩 🤷🏻

  24. Billy Donovan in 5 seasons 196-209 with 1 playoff win – extension

Michael Malone 471-327 with a 44-36 playoff record and led the Nuggets to their first NBA championship fired days before the 2025 playoffs. 🤔

  25. ALL Chicago Bulls fans are stupid- with all due respect. The organization march out the same lame team, players who have not proven themselves and a coaching staff is a real total joke!!!!! Why do fans keep financially supporting this team? Do you not know the only way to see change is to stop supporting these stupid, boneheaded decisions made by an inept owner and equally worse front office and "in over his head coach. But hey with his extension you'll have another 5 years to wipe your eyes.
