New Utah Jazz draft trade rumor, plus Ace Bailey said what!?!

all right guys ace Bailey has said some things about possibly the Jazz and other teams we’ll talk about it also some new Jazz intel about the draft and what’s going on we’re getting a better idea of what the Jazz are looking to do and also a new action figure behind me can you guess which one it is i’ll reveal it at the end all right let’s do this it’s the Hoops Nerd Show [Music] all right guys so the first thing let’s talk about Ace Bailey that is the news that everyone has been talking about it’s been a really interesting kind of weird situation but we have these all the time all the every single year come draft time there’s usually some sort of prospect that things don’t go very well basically what’s going on is that Ace Bailey and his representation and I think a lot of this is influenced from representation i don’t know if Ace Bailey is getting a lot of great direction from whoever is his agent is Omar Cooper or something like that he basically said he’s not super keen on going to the Jazz i don’t think that’s a reason to not draft Ace Bailey but there’s a few more things other than that go that’s going on and I know Jazz fans we hear something like that and we’re like “Oh my gosh can’t draft him now.” You know what yes you can you actually can the question is do you want to and I have a few there’s some red flags with Ace Bailey that make it so he’s not not kind of this can’t miss home run prospect otherwise he’d be completely locked in at number three to Philadelphia but that’s really the first little element of Ace Bailey but what we found out is that he has not had workouts with anyone he has not had workouts with you know obviously not the Jazz they view him according to these reports this all comes from Jonathan Gavone by the way you can look it up and read them if you want but that what they say is they view him as a top three pick and whichever team he goes to they want him to be kind of the featured guy now if I’m the Jazz I’m like well isn’t that isn’t that perfect to come to Utah then utah is likely going to trade some of their vets and I have some little inside stuff that I’ve heard where I know the Jazz are shopping those guys right now namely John Collins but there’s going to be playtime for him and very likely he is going to be a featured guy utah is going into the season they want to win games and they are going to feature him and he gets that chance so you would think that he would want to play for the Jazz and it’s why I think you know even though you hear something where he’s not super excited to go to the Jazz it works out pretty well you look at what happened with Donovan Mitchell who talks about Donovan Mitchell as much now on the Cleveland Cavaliers as they did when he was on the Jazz there’s just something about being on Utah that draws attention whether it’s Utah back into the John Stockton and Carl Malone days where they were kind of the villain everyone you know used to just hate on the Jazz here and there and they still do but they were good and everyone respected John Stockton they respected Carl Malone obviously back then everyone was fans of Michael Jordan but Utah was kind of like the villain everyone loved to hate and they got all sorts of attention the highest rated finals was the Michael Jordan you know Stockton and Malone finals it was phenomenal if he comes to Utah he’ll get that that feature and he wants to he thinks he’s going to be a star which every NBA player does you don’t get to this point without having insane competitiveness and talent and ability and honestly work ethic now the question is are you insanely competitive and do you have insane work ethic once you’re getting that money once you’re on the team are you still going to work on your game are you going to improve are you going to do all these things that’s the question and that’s what makes the Ace Bailey thing hard because if Utah hasn’t had him in to like talk with him and meet with him I I’m sure Utah has probably talked with him at the combine where players talk to teams and things like that and I’m sure the Jazz have found ways to kind of do some intel on him um so we’ll see but that’s basically it it also you know I think that’s I mean that’s basically everything is that he does not super keen on Utah top three caliber is what they view him as but he has not worked out with everyone i believe Tony Jones uh had a report that he’s going to go meet with the Sixers on Friday but the draft is like less than 10 days away i believe it’s the 25th i could be wrong let me know in the comments if I’m wrong but that’s like 8 days away so it’s like one team i will tell you right now i mean and this is something I have thought about i don’t know if I’ve talked about on this channel if I wrote about it on SLC Dunk or if I just talked to it about it with my friends but I have just felt like uh maybe I tweeted it but I’ve just felt like Ace Bailey will be there and that’s the report is because he that’s the other thing I’ve almost forgot because he has not met with all these teams these teams are nervous like we haven’t met with them we haven’t gotten our intel as much as we’d like these teams like to meet with these players obviously you want to talk to them you want to get a feel for them you want to bring them in and have a workout utah has tough workouts that they put players through because they want to see how well they do and how well they go through all the different drills and things like that but Utah’s seen him in the combine they’ve seen them do these things they’ve watched his tape obviously and I’m sure they’ve had plenty of time to go watch his games but it’s pretty scary to draft someone you have not interviewed you have not brought in for a workout maybe Utah will get some sort of secret workout in maybe maybe but if he’s not too keen on Utah probably not but if you think he’s going to be a star if you’re pretty pretty sure that he’s going to be really really good then you just you just got to draft him and the thing is is you know think about if you were going to the NBA and there’s like five or six teams at the top and you’re if you’re a top prospect I mean I’m not a big Laker fan would I want to be D would I if someone said “Hey James do you want to go play in you know Minnesota?” If you’ve never been to Minnesota you don’t know Minnesota or if you do you want to go play for the Sacramento Kings and you don’t really know Sacramento and you not been a fan of them you’re probably not going to say “Oh yeah i want I wish I hope Sacramento drafts me.” No what these players want is they want to be drafted as high as possible right that’s why they’re saying he’s a top three pick that he wants to be drafted as high as possible now I think it’s interesting when they say he wants to be a featured player when you think about Philly because you know if he goes to San Antonio he’s going to be a featured guy if he goes to Dallas I mean you could argue it’s a little bit like it’s it’s such a weird draft because you had these two teams in Philly and San Antonio go to the top and they’re kind of established teams philadelphia obviously more than than San Antonio but if he goes to Philadelphia you know he’s not going to be the guy he’s going to have to learn to be a role player and I don’t think they’re probably super excited about that so you know I don’t know what this all means but I do think that if he falls to Utah or Charlotte you know that’s probably a better fit and he’s probably going to make more money it’s tough for these guys that get drafted to some of these teams that are already established you look at like Jonathan Kaminga and and uh kind of what has happened with him he has not developed like he wants to he doesn’t get the play time steve Kerr has done him no favors and you know he’s going into a contract situation now and who knows how much he’s going to get paid and I just think that if Utah gets a chance to draft Ace Bailey 100% shot to prove himself with a lot of other young players and at you in Utah I’d argue Utah’s probably even better than Charlotte because if he goes to Charlotte he’s playing next to LaMelo Ball they already got their guy that they’ve talked about as a future star in Brandon Miller they’ve got established guys there as well charlotte might be better next year than people think and so going to Utah is kind of one of those places that it’s kind of like the first pick that he can be featured the other one is Washington i don’t think he falls past six i think if he falls past Charlotte and Utah has a chance i you know I think it’s pretty hard to pass on Ace Bailey if he’s there but I don’t think he’s going to fall past six because I my goodness wouldn’t Washington be so happy that they fall to six and they still get to pick Ace Bailey and he’ll go there and get all the minutes so I actually think that Ace Bailey might be if I were talking to him and who knows maybe that I don’t know it just seems weird that he wouldn’t want to go to somewhere like Utah or Washington or one of these teams that was really bad where he would be the guy and so I think if Utah long story short I’m kind of rambling here but if the Jazz get a chance to draft him I think they probably would anyway i mean who knows maybe they like Trey Johnson better but uh if he’s there and you didn’t win the lottery and you still get a chance to pick him and you like him I mean what a home run to not even win the lottery that would be incredible and by the way just another reminder that having that number five pick is a big deal because what if Ace Bailey falls past four you know that Washington would have picked him at five you know they would you know they would but Utah gets that choice before Washington and it’s a burdensome choice i mean it’s a tough one cuz I think you know I someone like Kong Canipple or however you say it I think he’s pretty sure thing to be a nice NBA player i don’t know if he’s going to be a star or anything like that but I think it’s pretty clear he’s going to be a starting level player in the NBA for a long time and that’s tempting because knowing you’re going to get a good player makes a lot of GMs happy you don’t want to miss ace Bailey comes with some miss potential because you know the handle’s not that great all of this stuff about not meeting with teams and things makes you wonder does he have the IQ you know the passing is not as good as you’d hope it would be i think it got better as the season went on but you know it’s not for sure at all so anyways that’s the Ace Bailey take now the other thing that happened is we got some intel from Jake Fischer i wrote about it on SLC Dunk if you haven’t read it already but it looks like the Utah Jazz there’s teams right here’s what uh Jake Fischer says and he talks about Charlotte he talks about let’s see he says as of now Utah appears to hold the middle block in this Jenga tower at number five the Jazz unlike the Sixers and Hornets have not actively encouraged trade interest from teams further further down the draft board sources say Utah also appears to be operating in contrast to Washington at number six with some rival teams projecting the Wizards as a potential trade-up candidate to leapfrog the Jazz and maybe even the Hornets so there you go utah like I’ve been trying to preach and teach and say the tank worked because what’s Washington trying to do they’re doing what Utah did the last two seasons trying to trade up what’s interesting about that Utah’s not trading back at least as of now maybe they things can change on a dime maybe they tra trade back come draft night because someone gives them just a crazy offer and maybe they know that Khan Canipple will be there at 6 or seven or something or maybe they love Common Malawatch as much as they love you know Trey Johnson let’s say Ace Bailey goes to four and the the Hornets pick him and Utah’s like you know we think Malawatch is same caliber as Trey Johnson and we can get Malawatch at seven let’s trade back utah’s not doing that so it means that Utah what this means is Utah likes what’s going to be there and that is really comforting to me after the pain and agony i got to be careful every time I yell or scream I get the hiccups i do not want to end this show with the hiccups but the absolute despair there we go of losing the lottery it still worked out because at worst you know the report from Jake Fischer is that the Sixers are taking VJ Edgecom at three that would be my prediction um although you never know maybe they trick us and they take Ace Bailey i don’t know maybe they just It’s hard to pass up on 6’8 6’9 that can make tough tough shots and athletic and if you think you can develop that then you’ve got something really nice but it sounds like 7030 chance that the Philadelphia 76ers are taking BJ Edgecom which is a bummer because I would love for him to be at five i I wanted BJ in this draft i think he’s going to be awesome obviously he’s not that big wing that you just kind of look for another you know reminder that Ace Bailey is hard to pass up it is hard to pass up 6’9 shotmaking athletic wing that can also defend by the way so but it sounds like they might get VJ he might fit in quicker with what they’re doing because the Philadelphia 76ers are a contender then it comes down to Charlotte and they’ve got choices at that point charlotte can pick Ace Bailey they can pick they can pick obviously Trey Johnson the other one that everyone is talking about and I’m hearing more and more where you’re reading it or listening is Kong Canipple those are kind of what it seems like the guys and then the other one that what who is in Utah today for draft workouts Jeremiah Fears who’s really interesting as well i think he’s the youngest in the draft or next to the youngest next to like Cooper Flag cuz they both they both uh re what’s it called they both re-entered at a younger age or whatever it’s called i can’t remember the word they are the youngest in the draft and Fears is incredibly fast he kind of brings what VJ that’s why VJ Edgecomb is really interesting because you know one of the elements of of Fear’s game that’s really nice is his ability to get to the rim and things like that but VJ Edgecomb does as well but he’s a little bigger and he’s the best athlete in the draft and he will cram it on you and he’s an elite defensive prospect that’s why VJ is nice guys ah ah I wanted VJ but anyways so Charlotte chooses between Ace Bailey Trey Johnson Khan Canipple and Jeremiah Fears utah’s bringing in Jeremiah Fears to get a look i someone online told me that they saw Khan Canipple in the on the flight to Salt Lake so maybe Khan has been here but you know Utah’s looking at him and we’ve seen reports that Utah has interest in Khan and then there’s reports about Trey Johnson every single mock right now has Utah with Trey Johnson and basically what this news that Fisher Fischer tells what it tells meah what that tells me is that they like any of those guys at that spot but they also don’t want to miss out on I I think that they like Trey Johnson i I’ve done this a long enough time guys where you can kind of read these things you you know just had so many reports of Philadelphia liking VJ and everyone asks themselves well why do they like VJ when Ace Bailey is like the top prospect right and it’s because things like this happen that we don’t know about where like agents are moving things around and telling teams this or that and no one they’re not getting a workout and you know agents and players try to maneuver themselves in the draft sometimes and so who knows but it’s basically this is my prediction it’s going to go Cooper flag one obviously Dylan Harper 2 VJ three the question mark is Charlotte we know that Charlotte from Fiser they are taking VJ if he’s there at four so if if uh if the Sixers take Ace Bailey I’m sad to say that VJ Edgecom will be taken at four and then Utah is picking between Trey Johnson Kong Canipple and Jeremiah Fierce those three guys and right now it makes sense that Utah would bring those guys in to to work them out um I I I you know this is going a little long i don’t care uh I really like Trey Johnson there’s just something about it that’s making me go the guy was measured bigger at the combine than we thought i think he was 6’5 without shoes 6’4 65 whatever it was i think he was just a hair under 6’5 so 6’4 and 78 i don’t know i’ll have to look it up but he’s 6’6 with shoes he is an elite scorer two-level scorer at least and I think when you look at his combine his his his leap and his athleticism tested well so there’s a there’s like ceiling there where he can be a three-level scorer and you know I think we’ve seen some things online where some of the different beat reporters have talked about the fact that his passing is better than people think and so I guess for me if I’m choosing I’m assuming that Ace Bailey is off the board and and VJ Edgecom’s off the board you’re picking between Con Trey and Jeremiah Fears i have a hard time passing on Trey Johnson it’s he’s of those guys he’s got the best size jeremiah Fears is a little smaller if I was comparing like best case scenario to me with fears is that he’s like Darius Garland which is a really nice player and like a fringe all-star i think he made an all-star team at least once um Jer there’s a world where Trey Johnson is kind of in the archetype of SGA who we’re watching in the finals where you’ve got this shooting guard that has this elite mid-range game can spread the floor at three one thing that’s awesome about Trey Johnson is he spreads the ball i mean he can shoot it from the logo he’s one of those guys and so he creates that gravity that co you know goes from the three-point line extended it’s not just guys that have to have their feet just a few centimeters off the line to knock down the three-point shot he can shoot it from anywhere he’s got deep deep range so that means there is room for him to grow as a playmaker which is exciting because you can do high pick and rolls and we’re not talking three-point line pick and rolls we’re talking high Chich and Chong pick and rolls baby from the logo all the way out and then that means you’ve got guys spread the floor that means when you’re running a pick and roll that high with drag screens you know just standard pick and roll from there on out and they have to go over the screen and we know that he’s quick he can get to the basket nba spacing is going to be good to Trey Johnson and if we know that his passing can be better or it’s something that he can develop then I can see him being he’s not like SJA sga is so balanced and his ability to score in the mid-range and his craftiness is unbelievable trey Johnson is more of a like step back three-point guy he’s he’s I think he’s actually a little bigger than SGA i think they’re actually pretty similar size that’s what’s exciting is he’s he’s as big as SGA if not bigger plays the same shooting guard position and can be kind of that focal point scorer like SGA is they’re different players sga is the MVP and arguably the best player in the league right now uh so I’m not saying that that’s what Trey Johnson’s going to be never say never but there is a world where he’s got he’s got a hint of Steph to his game because he’s got that range and he can either catch and shoot or pull up in the pick and roll he’s got a hint of there’s a little mix of of SGA in there where the mid-range game and he can handle the ball and score you know there’s some elements to really like and you know there was one clip you know the one the team that does such a good job No Ceilings is great their highlight videos are awesome i watched his defense has potential to be nice i watched him do those he’s got some defensive highlights that are like okay and you know SGA is probably the weak link on that Oklahoma City Thunder defense which is scary as heck for a guy that averages like two plus steals a game and defends pretty well i think I think uh there’s a world where he defends at that level and he says the right things one last thing about Trey Johnson too and I I have to say I would rather have Con than Fears i think it for me I’d take Trey and then Khan although there’s a world where Charlotte takes Khan Canipple guys i think that’s real possibility people are looking at him top four and I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s gone but uh Trey Johnson um what was I going to say oh I Oh just the mentality if you haven’t there’s a there’s a podcast Kevin O’ Conor it’s worth listening to he interviewed Trey Johnson and I love his personality like it’s really good he’s you can tell he’s really smart he gets it he understands the game and loves basketball like all he cares about is basketball this is what he’s obsessed with wanting to be great and that’s what you want i mean you can’t ask for anything better obviously it would be nice if Utah had won the number one pick or the number two and got Dylan or Cooper but you can do worse than Trey Johnson man 6’6 scoring guy you know he could be really really special and then next year Utah has a chance to keep that top eight pick there is like three or four guys that are number one pick worthy next year it’s a crazy topheavy draft next year aj Debonsa Darren Peterson Camboozer it’s crazy all of those guys would be in the the running for number one overall pick in this draft with Cooper which is I think part of why that’s the word reclassified that’s why I think Cooper reflat classified because this cupcoming class is crazy cooper was smart to reclassified to now because he’s kind of the consensus number one next year is crazy so Utah needs to make some moves uh I’ll talk about it i kind of want to talk about that number nine just a a fun little note the pick from Fiser the guy the team that he says is most likely to trade out to have their pick available is Toronto at number nine so let me know in the comments what trade would you do to move to number nine you got to give something to make it happen you got to give something utah could do it if they want to we’ll see if they’re willing to do it guys first
