The Sacramento Kings Are Trying to Trade into the First Round of the NBA Draft | Locked On Kings
the NBA draft is a week away normally that would be a much bigger deal here on Locked on Kings but because the Kings don’t have a first round pick we haven’t really talked about the draft too much but there’s a good chance according to plenty of rumors that the Kings are aggressively trying to move into the first round which players could they be targeting well to in order to answer that question I got to bring in the best draft expert on the planet raphael Barlo from the NBA big board podcast joins me on Locked on Kings to talk about the Kings potentially moving up and names on their radar you are Locked on Kings your daily Sacramento Kings podcast part of the Locked On podcast network your team every day and now ladies and gentlemen it is that time time for another episode of Locked on of you who have been with me for a long time here on Locked on Kings know or should know about Raphael Barlo because he’s normally a staple of NBA and Kings off season podcasts because of how much the Kings are usually involved in the draft well over the last few years since the Keegan Murray draft the draft hasn’t mattered as much to Sacramento a lot of that’s been because the Kings have finally been somewhat competitive of course they made the playoffs a couple years ago but now they’re in a position again where roster is not great organization is turning a new leaf and unfortunately they don’t have their first rounder because of part of the Kevin Herder trade from a handful of seasons ago but according to rumors reports the Kings are interested in moving into the first round makes a ton of sense in fact there’s rumors out there the Kings are informing agents that they feel very confident they will have a firstround pick on draft night the range expected to be in the 20s whether it’s early 20s or late 20s we do not know but if you’re going to move up in the draft normally it’s because you have your eye on some talent that won’t be there when the Kings select uh the 42nd pick in the draft that’s the only pick they currently have it’s in the second round so who could those names be what names should be on the Kings radar what is the talent like in that 20s range in the first round raphael Barlo from the NBA big board joins me now on Locked on Kings to talk about that range and and bring some of his unbelievable draft and scouting expertise here to the Locked on Kings podcast raphael Barlo you thought you could get away from me you thought just because the Sacramento Kings don’t have a first round pick that you didn’t have to do a show with me well guess what buddy you’re stuck doing a locked on kings episode with me a week before the NBA draft raphael Barlo the best in the business when it comes to NBA draft an analysis the host of NBA big board nice enough to talk about a team that doesn’t have a first round pick yet sounds like the Sacramento Kings are interested in moving into uh the the the first round of the draft we’ll talk about that but before we get to that Raphael I I want to get your reaction to when we saw the the Mavericks jump up 10 spots and win the Cooper Flag sweep stakes then you saw the Spurs jump up six spots to get that second pick what was your initial reaction as someone who’s been watching Cooper Flag and Dylan Harper very very closely now knowing okay we have a pretty good idea of where they’re going to end up well actually I was supposed to be at the draft at the the lottery and I had a credential and I was in the airport all day long when I say all day long I was there from like 4:00 a.m until I mean when I landed in Chicago that’s when they went to the last commercial break before they announced like the last I think it was like four picks so I was kind of disappointed because I was planning on being there i had a credential i mean for me as a guy that covers the draft this was supposed to be like you know a milestone moment in my life but I was at the airport all day so I found out like just getting off the plane and and and going to baggage claim so I was disappointed about that but initially I was just shocked like I was I was blown away that the Mavs had a 1.8% chance to get Cooper flag and with everything that has been going on around Dallas this this year with the trade for them to get Cooper flag on one hand it’s a good thing it’s good for the city it’s actually good for the Mavs financially because there was a lot of people that said they weren’t coming back to games and I was I live in Dallas and I was at the games and it was it was pretty crazy the second half of the year so I’m I’m happy for the franchise and then San Antonio the first thing that came to my mind is I don’t like the fit i don’t like the fit for Dylan Harper and then also it just made me wonder would they have made the trade with the Kings obviously you don’t know in advance how the ping-pong balls are going to fall but would they have made the deal with the Kings for Dear Fox if they knew that Dylan Harper was going to be their guy at number two because now Fox seems like he may not fit their timeline so it’s it’s a weird it’s a weird situation in San Antonio but hey the top two picks ended up in Texas and in the West and for some teams you’re probably thinking like can can these guys go east like can we spread it out a little bit more so I I want to get your thought really quick on that before we we we talk about the Kings dylan Harper expected to go number two in your mind just based off of how you’ve scouted and and what you think about Dylan would it be understandable or in the best interest because now there’s a speculation will De’aran Fox be on the team will they use De’Arren to maybe try to make a Giannisko trade or anything like that they of course have Stefon Castle there too who just won rookie of the year yeah would you if you’re San Antonio consider moving on from De’Aran Fox and would you pick Dylan Harper and the upside and the project or development I should say over De’arren Fox the prime starting caliber point guard um well one I would try to move Well it’s a tough question too because I think as crazy as it sounds even though Harper hasn’t accomplished anything he probably gets you more value than than Fox right now just because people love the the unknown so I would Yeah i just don’t know if I’m in Milwaukee I would want Darren Fox if I’m going to move Giannis right if I’m gonna move Giannis then I need to go all in on a rebuild and I much rather have the younger guy that is significantly cheaper who’s not due for an extension so I I can’t say Fox can’t be moved but it’ll be interesting like what options would they have like if they were to move him other than like sending him back to Sacramento a team that needs a point guard it’s crazy the Spurs are going to have two and Sacramento doesn’t have one yep spurs could have three honestly by the by on at the end of draft night they might have three before they decide what to do with any of them so the Kings don’t have a first round pick they lost their pick to Atlanta the 13th pick as part of the Kevin Hurderter trade from years upon years upon years ago there’s certainly frustrations I can imagine for new Kings GM Scott Perry of taking over for taking control of a team that didn’t make the playoffs and you don’t have a first round pick to work with right away 13 the 13th pick not the most valuable pick in the world but still a lottery pick kind of a weird question for you can the Kings live with it like in your mind like the 13th overall pick in this draft or at least the range of talent that you expect to be there like is this an ideal or an okay draft to essentially not have that pick can is is it less painful than it might imagine or do you think no there’s really good value at that range this the Kings might end up regretting years from now that they didn’t have this 13th pick i don’t think they will end up regretting it i think there’s a couple point guards in that range that could be available jagger Demon and Kasparakonis there’s a lot to like about both of them but I do think that both have major concerns and so I think it’s probably it’s you never know i mean those guys did end up being good but I think with their concerns I don’t know if there’s going to be a big difference between those guys and if they move up into like let’s say one of Brooklyn’s picks Brooklyn has four first round picks and I don’t think they’re going to bring all four in but if you get one of Brooklyn’s picks in the late 20s and you end up with someone like Walter Clayton Jr I think Walter Clayton Jr realistically could have just as equal as a as a season than those guys and he’s older he’s he’s more mature he’s proven as a winner and you’re taking two guys or two guys in that range at 13 would have been one and done freshman and I think Walter Clayton will be more plug and play ready to go now and I think Sacramento’s just in a unique situation where I they’re not rebuilding but they’re trying to win obviously i mean I was around doing episodes with you when they had that super long playoff drought so I know they want to get back there so with that being said I know it’s a long-winded answer i think if they can move up in the late first they should be able to find somebody that can probably at least shortterm provide equal value as to some of the guys that are projected to go in that 13 range as of right now the only pick that the Kings do have is the 42nd pick so we’re talking the 12th pick in the in the second round mhm is there a cut off though in your mind of if you talk about like moving into the first round like if we get to I know a lot of people are looking at like 26 27 because Brooklyn owns both those picks they have four first rounders so that’s a team that in theory would be willing to move on from at least one of those first round picks but that’s like late late first round is there a and and I don’t know if this question makes sense the way my mind works is like you get to a point in the first round where unless there’s a talent there that you absolutely want that you don’t think is going to make it to 42 like is there a point where it’s like it’s just not it’s just not worth it like it’s not worth it to trade for 27 or 28 or 20 like the last three four five picks in the first round just to say you had a first rounder is there like a cut off point for you or no a first round pick is a first round pick if you can get it go and get it yeah I think if if you can get a first round pick go and get it i I do think in this draft there are teams that could be willing to move down so you talked about the Nets does the Thunder really need another pick at number 24 like whoever they draft unless it’s a draft and stash guy that person’s not going to crack their rotation and I even think the Thunder have a couple point guards on their roster that I think could really help the Kings i mean Nola Topic was a lottery pick last year he basically red shirted this year aj Mitchell is a guy that I really really liked coming out of out of college and he’s been in and out the rotation so I think that um the Thunder could be I mean I think that could be as high as they can go at number 24 just because the Thunder don’t need the pick this episode of the Locked on Kings podcast brought to you by Game Time there’s nothing like the NBA playoffs the intensity the buzzer beaters fans losing their minds it’s the kind of atmosphere that you absolutely have to experience live and these this year’s about 20 because we’ve heard like the we know the Miami Heater are in the Kevin Durant sweep stakes and maybe they won’t have an answer by draft night but we have a somewhat of an understanding that the the Miami Heat are also interested in Demard Rosen if you could somehow use Demard Rosen to to move up to snatch that 20th overall pick and I’ve heard rumors of like Andrew Wiggins to take his contract or Himemehawk Jr or whatever value that you need in order to make the money works but if you could move up to to 20 and potentially get that pick from Miami I mean do you look at we can start talking about names specifically but do you look at like the 20th overall pick is a valuable enough pick to to use a Demar De Rozan to go up and get and prioritize no I wouldn’t do it i mean it just depends on the Kings direction and I think whether you’re a Kings fan or not a Kings fan you probably do have some questions about the overall direction of the team but I don’t think if you move Deamar De Rozan for number 20 in a draft that is not like thought to be like super strong i mean it thinned out when all the guys went back to school but if that were me I wouldn’t make that move unless I just wanted to get off D Rozan’s contract and save some money but I don’t even know if number 20 could come in and start for the Kings as the roster is constructed right now so give me some names let’s talk about some names here of in that let’s just say 20 to 20 or 20 to 30 range we’re talking the final real third of the first round which is where we expect the King if the Kings somehow moved up into the teens or higher I’d be pretty stunned so we’re we’re talking like the the the bottom third of the first round is where we think the Kings will try and like push their way into whether it’s a point guard which of course they have a need or just best talent available or the right kind of project the Kings are still I think kind of forced to be competitive right now because of the contracts of Zack Lavine and Deont Sabonis but they’re not it’s not the same as when they added Keegan Murray to the team and they’re like “Okay we need to we’re trying to add a rookie to help us compete right away.” this is more like let’s we have the time on our side maybe a little bit more to develop more of a project there later in the in the first round so what are some names in that range and even trickling into uh into the uh the second round that you think these are some guys with potentially high upside that if if you’re the Kings you should have your eye on so I think there’s a chance a chance not a great chance but I think there’s a chance that Jagger Demon from BYU could fall so maybe around that 20 range he’s he’s polarizing there’s some teams that I’ve heard like him because of his positional size he’s 69 i think he’s the best passer in the draft but there’s some teams that are concerned does he have the handle to to be an NBA point guard is he assertive enough to really unlock his his passing he has some struggles throughout the year with smaller guards and aggressive defenders so there’s a chance he could fall i don’t think he’ll fall too far but let’s say you get to 20 i think there’s a slim chance he could be available after that there’s Jace Richardson a little on the smaller side measured out at 6 feet tough eval for me i don’t know if Michigan State just put him in the absolute best position to succeed which got him in this draft range or does he have more game than he was able to show at Michigan State because he didn’t play a lot at the point sometimes he was playing the three at six foot sometimes he I would say most of the time he was playing off the ball but if you just look at the analytics he was incredibly efficient made his threes made his mid-range pull-ups was like crazy crazy efficient at the rim i think he was like the most efficient finisher at the rim in this class as far as like projected draft picks despite I don’t want to say he’s not like a phenomenal athlete because he tested really well athletically his game just isn’t built off of athleticism but I mean he has a floater that’s like literally automatic when you get to the paint so I think he could be available what’s interesting is the NBA gave out green room invites and they’ve given out 19 so far and he wasn’t in the first order or the second wave so that could be a sign that maybe the draft stock is falling a little bit i mean you never know with with the green room stuff but usually it’s supposed to be an indicator of your projected draft range and so he went from being a guy that pre-combine was thought you know middle of the first round to now you know if the 19 picks are the projected n top 19 guys going then he could be in the 20s so he he’s an option there um Walter Clayton Jr like I mentioned he’s a senior i mean incredible shot maker was Florida’s best player this year they won a national championship he should definitely be in that that mix between 20 and 30 so those are the names that come to mind there’s also Cam Jones who I don’t think anybody thought of him as a point guard coming into this year he played with Tyler Kolick at Marquette and he had a really good year i mean he was the I think he was like the biggest big East leading scorer as a junior comes back as a senior plays point guard and he averages like six assists a game but he has a really good assist to turnover ratio the shooting numbers dipped with more responsibility but he’s an intriguing option because he’s he’s more of a plug-and-play guy we know the obvious hole that the Kings have at the point guard position but they’ve been starved for wings for essentially guys that are like 68 69 610 in that range it’s it’s Keegan Murray and that’s it on this King squad and that’s how it’s been even in the year that they made the playoffs so in terms of like guys in in that range whether it’s Liam McNeely who’s I probably not going to be there or he should be he should oh really you think he’ll fall so or Thomas Sorber Rashir Fleming like guys like this uh even Will Riley I know he kind of spent some time at the two guard spot but he’s what listed as 69 610 or 69ish um like what about guys in that range if the Kings were to look for a wing who I would imagine in this case they would prioritize as much three and as they could possibly find every team wants three and D guys but especially guys that can hold it down on the defensive end on the perimeter like are there any guys in that range that you think hey the Kings should have this guy on their on their radar yeah actually before I get to that I want I left out Nolan Trayor a a point guard from France that was projected top five pick coming into the year got off to a rough start playing professionally in France and I I think that people have held it against him i think any other point guard in this class if if the roles were reversed if they were trying to lead a team as a point guard as an 18-year-old would struggle and Europe is different than the states you know there’s no there’s no draft every team is trying to win and win now so I think the adjustment that he had was a little difficult and some people have they haven’t been able to unsee the struggles that he had but they haven’t paid attention to how he progressed back to the last question uh wings like Sorber is not a wing at all he’s a five rashir Fleming is more so of your your your three and D4 but could be a small ball five so they wouldn’t fit the description there liam McNeely I talked to I talked to a a team that worked him out and they’re on the same page as I am like I don’t I don’t get the hype and the appeal like he shot 31% from three not a good athlete is not going to be able to defend on the perimeter a lot of the the love that he’s receiving appears to me based off the high school hype and I don’t I don’t know too many guys that aren’t considered like really really good athletes that can shoot 32% from three have defensive concerns and and and would be pegged as a firstrounder but what do I know i mean he got an invite to the green room i thought his stock was falling i talked to actually I talked to a team and I’m hoping I don’t get aggregated here but I talked to a team yesterday and they said that based well actually it was one scout not the whole not not the whole collective of the front office but there was one particular scout that said based off of his rankings Liam McNeely is a two-way player which you know that can mean you know pick what 35 or 40 or or under but he didn’t think he was a a guaranteed contract guy but he could be available and maybe he he shoots the ball better than what he did but to me Will Riley would be the best wing option there because he has the positional size i think he’s projects to be a good shooter but he also has some pretty good reps as a as a like ball handler and and making plays out of ball screens which when I first saw him play I was like man this dude does not pass at all he shoots it every single time then I watched his high school film and I saw like you know what he’s he’s a capable pastor and then he shows some flashes of it this year at Illinois but from everything that I’ve heard is that he’s been really really impressive in in in his pre-draft workouts this episode of the Locked On podcast is also brought to you by Ollipop it’s a new kind of soda made for people who love the classic taste of soda but want something that actually supports their health with just two to five grams of sugar and nine grams of prebiotic fiber in every can Ollipop is reimagining soda in a way that’s ultimately better for your gut traditional sodas are loaded with sugar like 39 grams in a regular Coke or 44 gram in an orange Fanta olip flips that script with just a fraction of the sugar no artificial sweeteners and gut friendly ingredients like Olysmart a blend shown to support digestive and overall health it’s soda that tastes like the real thing but actually does something that is good for your body they’ve got so many different flavors my fridge is packed with them and I have to fight my wife to make sure she doesn’t steal all the root beer ones the root beer is my favorite favorite but their cherry cola is delicious the the the Dr goodwin which is essentially their Dr pepper dupe it tastes exactly like Dr pepper but again it’s actually healthy for you so many different flavors uh to go out and try and if you drink Ollie Ollipop enough you’ll start to notice like a a a difference like just how you feel right look I know avid soda drinkers exist like I I drink a lot of soda and Ollipop has been a gamecher for me and just how I feel after drinking one or two sodas a day get a free can of Ollipop just buy any two cans in store and they’ll reimburse you for one of them head to drinkallipop.com/lockton NBA to claim your free or to claim your free can and find Ollipop near you that’s drinkallipop.com/lockedonba couple more for you one of them is definitely out of left field so I guess mentally prepare yourself for that one Raphael right in this range this is always the the range where you hope four years from now you’re the team that picked that player that everybody said “How the heck did that player get past so many whether it’s Giannis or Nicolic or or guys like this right if you’re if you’re a late first round to even early second round team you’re hoping to find that that diamond in the rough that just turns your franchise around that nobody saw coming it’s impossible to project but if you were looking at guys that you personally feel like man like if don’t people are sleeping on this guy but he has the potential to be a lot better maybe not a Nicolola Joic or Giannis type but a lot better than he’s projected to be just by your observations which guy or guy a couple of guys just jumps off to you right now i’d say in the Kings range maybe yeah maybe around their range hugo Gonzalez is a name that that stands out to me when you look at the European prospects that were born in 2006 so they go by generations over there like the year you were born not you know high school class or whatever hugo Gonzalez was always like that dude in the 2006 generation he was the number one ranked player for years and he hasn’t really done anything that should knock him off of that spot it’s just been lack of opportunity he’s playing for Real Madrid real Madrid is a powerhouse in Europe and in the Spanish ACB and he’s playing behind some guys that are former NBA players and I think you have to really understand how Europe works to I guess understand why he’s in this situation so you may look at and say “Oh well he’s playing behind these guys that were flame outs in the NBA.” And nine times out of 10 that guy that flamed out at the NBA at 22 he’s a better player now at 27 or 28 than he was when he couldn’t get minutes in the NBA and there’s a reason why NBA teams liked him in the first place and it’s hard for an 18-year-old kid to beat out that type of player because it’s not like they’re preparing for the future say “Hey we got to give him minutes to develop him.” Everything is about when right now right now so Gonzalez hasn’t had the opportunity to really play and there are guys that he was better than on the European levels that went to college for a year got an opportunity to play and we’re talking about them as lottery picks there’s Noah Sen who’s playing at Radio Farm who I think is going to be you know go within the top eight picks he wasn’t considered to be better than Gonzalez you know maybe 18 months ago so Gonzalez could end up falling to the late first early second midsec and he could be someone that we look back and say you know what he was really good before he had that year where he just couldn’t you know get on the floor for Real Madrid so the the question that I want to end with that’s totally out of left field Raphael and again this is there’s no right answer to this question i’m just more curious on your mindset of this the Kings the good news of them not having a first round pick in this draft and that Kevin Herder trade finally conveying is it frees up their future right scott Perry now has all the Kings picks through I think 2032 plus a 2027 Spurs first unprotected a 2031 Timberwolves first that’s unprotected we have no idea how good or bad those picks are going to be but you have this treasure trove of draft assets not quite like the Sam Prey level but it’s it’s it’s noticeable i’m of the belief that the Kings will not be using that treasure trove yet to make any kind of big move at least short term but that is available for the Kings to be aggressive with down the line as soon as this upcoming trade deadline or next off seasonason or whatever they want to do how do you analyze especially for a team like the Kings who their draft picks have significant value because people kind of expect them to be good and the Kings to be bad it’s just just the way the NBA has been how do you analyze a team in the Kings position who primarily through the trade market is that’s the way they’re going to make significant short-term improvement for a team like the Kings to shop those picks and to potentially use those picks multiple of those picks the same way Orlando just used four of them to go out and get Desmond Bane how do you like what is your perspective on that for a team like Sacramento who who relies so heavily on draft picks and not free agency to build a squad that’s a tough question one because you look at all the Kings picks and you can say they have the opportunity to add even more if they decided to do a fire sale right so they could have like I mean a almost a Oklahoma City Thunder type you know war chest of picks if they decided to move on from Lavine and and even if it’s not like four picks like they got for Desmond Bane but if you get two for Lavine and there’s a part of me that thinks it’s possible because of the parody in the NBA there may be some teams that are like “Hey we’re another player away from from competing ing and all you really need if you can get in that top four and get homecourt advantage then you really have a chance but then there’s also the factor of some teams are scared of the apron and so on so the sers can make it a little difficult but if the Kings were like trying to like go all out and win now with those picks I do think there there’s some options and I’m just throwing something out here like what happens if Atlanta decides that they don’t want to give Trey Young the four here is $228 million that’s been a conversation this summer yeah and he I mean maybe they offer him like 4180 or 4200 and it’s a thing where he’s like “No I deserve the max look at my numbers.” And he becomes available atlanta would probably be facing a rebuild and then you you can move some of those picks and however you have to make the salaries match up i haven’t thought about that that far but I think that could be an option as far as other guys that that could be available i mean you never know i don’t want to say nobody you never is I don’t want to say a player is not available because Luca Dantage was traded and if was traded anybody maybe the Hornets are like “Hey we want to do a culture reset and we want to we want to move LaMelo Ball.” Yep that’s something that just off the top of my head no speculation no like intel but I don’t think that’s out of the possibility because I I when the Luca trade happened I the first team I thought of was Charlotte right because Charlotte may say well we want to move on from LaMelo he’s a little injuryprone we want to just do a reset it’s a whole new front office new ownership but we don’t want to take the PR hit m but the Luca trade made it made everybody expendable so maybe it’s easier for a team like Charlotte to say “Hey we’ll take the PR hit and we’ll we’ll move LaMelo.” So the Kings do have some options it’s like all right you have the picks to add an impact player but you also have the players on your roster to bring you more picks if you want to just go in all in on a rebuild having Raphael Having Raphael Barlo on the show is such a freaking treat and I hope listeners appreciate it as much as I do this man is so unbelievably gifted at what he does the dedication that he has to covering the draft and scouting talent year round not just not just when the draft starts picking up raphael does this year round goes all over the world not just the country but the world to do this and to be able to steal his time a week before the draft for a team that doesn’t even have a first round pick that’s a big freaking deal raphael I hope the Kings get to a point where I don’t have to talk to you every single year but it doesn’t seem like that’s the direction that they are trending in right now you are incredible my guy thank you for taking the time here to to chat and good luck over the next week have fun on draft night and we’ll uh I look forward to seeing everything on NBA Big Board and how it plays out and your analysis of the selections and everything too it’s going to be it’s going to be a lot of fun well thank you so much uh I was kind of disappointed that you don’t have on your your cape and your and your crown new era man a new made I made one playoff series and acted like that that the Kings finally made it and and and popped off on Twitter and here I am getting humbled again talking about the draft well you know what that tells me you have to do it again that you’re the key like the whole fan base is relying on you and your cape you gotta do it again half the fan base hates me because I am mad that Mike Brown and uh and De’aran Fox are gone and I won’t let it go so So I I’ll dial my hill alone raphael appreciate you my guy no problem thank you so much

Of course the Kings would be trying to trade into one of the weakest drafts in the last decade 😂
I’m really hoping that the kings can turn things around at some point in years to come. But the way things are going as of late, I’m not seeing much progress
Kings should accumulate as many pick as possible and rebuild. I’ll be a fan and go to games and weather the storm if they do.
10:50 A 1st isn't just a 1st. Obviously their are different tiers. OKC's 1st rounder isn't the same value as Dallas's 1st. We shouldn't be moving up unless it makes sense. There may be opportunities to get those 1st for cheap since some teams are stacked and dont need it but I hope the King dont trade a future first for a mid to late 1st. Im okay with the kings trading a couple of 2nds for the 1st.
15:00 Dude, we need to get off Derozan. He is retirement age. Trade for players with value, picks, and pick swaps in our favor. We can't be stuck with Derozan when he declines and retire without getting anything in return. Derozan will be long gone when it comes time to pay the pick swap price. We better flip Derozan for young player and some draft capital, at the very least flip for a younger player that we can flip later on.
Start Val next to sabonas. Figure it out. Keegan should be traded if he doesn't take a leap.
