six out of understand who this Thunder team excuse me could be and who they could elevate to be and I think the difference from game 5 to game one for them is a team that’s going to close out in six score around the league allen if I said the Grizzli should trade John Morant is that fact or fiction you mean right now it’s fiction because there’s a lot of questions about John Morant around the league one of them is actually a curiosity of it who got Taylor Jenkins inspired were you part of this decision i think there right now there’s too much off the court going on with John Morant you want to get him back on the court you want to get him playing get his value up so you can get the most for him if you want to move and then Monica back to you if I said Kevin Durant would make the Timberwolf’s title favorites is that fact or fiction this one’s fiction for me because as we worked on the segment yesterday favorite mint the favorite the single favorite i can’t give them that quickly i personally I think it takes a minute for stars to kind of gel and then you can’t throw the thunder if they go on a close out tonight or in seven games you can’t throw the thunder out of the um equation well let’s talk more about Kevin Durant shall we j Williams was on this show yesterday he had this assessment about KD’s impact it’s going to sound harsh but it’s just reality of it like he’s not going to be the guy you’re going to build around for the next five years he’s a he’s a high-end ancellary piece that could be additive to a championship team so I did an essay earlier this morning that is currently blowing up on Twitter X and and I I ran through all of the things i can’t argue that Kevin Durant isn’t someone you build around for five more years he’s going to be 37 i cannot sit here and tell you that 5 years from now he’s going to be the key to a championship puzzle i can however tell you that his numbers suggest he is playing every bit as well right now on both ends of the floor as he ever has in his career so to me the answer to the question on the screen can Durant be the best player on a championship team is yes now if there’s one thing we’ve learned in the modern NBA Brian Winorst that no one player can win a championship the sport has become more about the bench and the others and the dept but can KD be the best the single best player on a championship team to me the answer is definitively yes what do you think Winman well let’s look at the teams that are on his list i I think he’s got Miami on there because he is attracted by the city and Pat Riley it’s certainly not the team so let’s put them aside let’s look at Houston and San Antonio he would be the number one offensive option on those two teams now I don’t know about best player Green i don’t I don’t know if that’s what he’s looking for at age 37 but he certainly would join those two teams and make them way more dynamic offensively particularly Houston who is an elite defensive team that had difficulty getting isolation and individual scoring um and so he certainly believes by looking at those two teams that he can be a very high level member uh of of a contending team and so I’m going to listen to what he says there and that’s why I think Houston especially has got their eyebrow up i’m not sure they’re willing to pay a massive price for a 37yold when the rest of their team is in its early the mid20s but I think Houston should definitely be considered still in this race especially if Minnesota doesn’t close i I think depending on what they have to give up and if teams believe they are renting him meaning he only has one year left on his deal that price might be lower all of the things being equal if you just add Kevin Durant to what Houston had this year to me they do become one and 1A with OKC for next year ooh uh I don’t know about 1A and one they were the two seed this year they had a great finish they have a great finish here’s here’s the offense for them at times was at best anemic right and Katie obviously would immediately solve that um I just the idea of dropping him in yes but the idea of doing a trade I think you’re going to take a little bit of a hit on one of one and that will probably be on the defensive side of the basketball i I don’t think anybody is disillusioned about who KD is again it’s how well is it going to fit what is sort of the immediate plan versus the longterm plan and then what do you have to give up you’re asking the question can he be the best player on a championship team the answer is yes definitively yes but does he have to be the lead player does he have to be the leader of that team does he have to be the most important figure on that team no he can be the most talented best player in the moments and you saw like the Rocket stuff there that that was great numbers there clutch time with the Rockets they struggled in it he’s the perfect guy for Clutch time he could bring you home but you don’t need him to be the face of your franchise that’s the part if you have the right build and then you drop him in he just has to be Kevin Durant you’re not asking him to now change the lock room culture be the face of the franchise talk to the media no just do what you do best we’ve already got other stuff taken care of which is why the Nick part was so intriguing and why Minnesota is so intriguing right i think as we were talking through this some last night the idea that he would be sort of the lone multitime allstar that to me is what you’re getting into now right like he could be number one but the guy next to him has also been a fringe all NBA guy like is an all-star caliber guy like the distance between him and the rest of the squad he’s not at a place where I think he could just drag a bunch of Joes but he can still be the number one guy just to repeat a little tiny piece of what I said earlier his contemporaries are LeBron James and Step Curry’s a little younger than Staff he’s much younger than LeBron their games haven’t fallen off that substantially and neither has his and we never we somehow view him very differently and I get there are a lot of reasons why i think someone might be making a great move if they find a way to get Kevin Durant meanwhile rant numbers yeah I I think a lot of teams agree with you Greenie i just for the nuance here I don’t think it’s that people don’t want Durant i think the disagreement is what Durant wants and what the price to pay for a 37 soon to be 37yeold who uh is probably going to want a twoyear 0 million extension that’s the issue in the case of the Nicks because you brought them up it’s more that the what they have on their roster would be so impacted by a Durant trade and so you know that it there’s nuance in there but if you’re asking me whether if I talk to people in the league people believe that Kevin Duran is still an elite player the answer is yes they do ok good because what I was hearing sitting here yesterday was Durant is now an auxiliary piece durant is now a one B durant is now a guy that needs to be team to have a chance to win and in the NBA today that’s true of literally everyone what I wanted to demonstrate with HO’s work and again we we work on these things together completely in tandem is that every single metric every way of measuring a player’s performance suggest that Kevin Durant remains among the very best players in the NBA and to just turn your nose up at the chance of getting that in the name of some team chemistry we think we’re building or something like that feels to me like a very arrogant move this is an all-time great player who is still in his prime he airquoted team chemistry basic talking to us right continuity okay i’m just I can’t take it look i’m going to give you the one number that matters most to everybody that’s involved in this situation age that’s the concern because although LeBron James keeps blasting through those glass ceilings about age and showing you that even at 40 you can still play at the highest level in the sport there it does come a point where the drop off happens and it’s never a slow drop it is a plummet usually that’s what happens you are waiting for it for somebody like Kevin Durant but he isn’t doing cuz he’s such an efficient scorer the problem that I think right now you have is what Windy said i think the Nicks would love to have them on the roster they would love to have him in the starting lineup with a guy like Jayen Brunson the problem is you can’t anymore in today’s NBA make a trade like that and still have a team left to play casing point Phoenix Suns they got him they were going to build a super team the problem was it’s three guys and no one else you can’t do that and so it’s not possible i don’t think the extension is even part of the problem i think it’s the cost of bringing him in with a trade because you’ve already done a two for one for Cat now you’d have to do a two for one for him you’re running out of players it’s just not feasible the cost of him only accentuates your point Greenie like you understand that he’s still a valuable number one number two option whatever you want to say in terms of a team trying to go on a championship run i think it is the cost because of the numbers that you pointed out and quick point out Golden State got him because of a loophole yes that’s how you became a free agent they were able to sign him in the one year where the TV contracts exploded the salary cap and it was a it was a oneyear blip and it wound up being what it was and I think it has completely shaped the narrative around Duran’s career from that point forward mostly in a negative way which is what it is now Windman you also pointed out something else because I keep bringing up the Nicks everyone else sitting here yesterday including you Monica were bringing up Minnesota and the possibility of him teaming up with Anthony Edwards wendy what did you tell us was said yesterday that didn’t pick up as much traction as it should my colleague Mark Spears who was very plugged into everything in the NBA reported yesterday on NBA today that Aunt Edwards who was very close with Kevin Durant from last year’s Olympic team looks at him as an idol um he is not actively recruiting Durant he is not a part of this process he’s in Atlanta doing his offseason workouts he’s not involved and you know I’m not going to speak or have conjecture as to why um I know that Aunt and that having been around the Olympic team last year I know that Aunt would defer to Kevin on just about everything and if Kevin doesn’t want to be in Minnesota which has been articulated I could see Ant not putting pressure on him but you know I know a lot of people say “Well why wouldn’t Durant just want to go be with Ant because they’re such a devastating force together?” That was in context spears reported so that’s an interesting one too yeah I kind of like that it’s a little bit of an O to the old school I would say in terms of we know how much pride Anthony took in knocking the Suns out a season ago in terms of the postseason it’s it’s a little bit of a tip of the cap to the way it used to be in terms of not necessarily teaming up and being able to appreciate the opportunity to compete now I do agree with Wendy if Kat said this what we going to do I think there would be a i’m not going to sweat it if you want to come play here great if you don’t then he’ll have fun competing against him i think Kevin Durant right now there are other options at least he hopes so or thinks so i just don’t know if there’s that big of a market right now and it again has nothing to do with greatness everything you said there I completely agree with numbers efficiency everything about him but I think the market is not going to be there for him for what he might want and also what Phoenix might want they might have to trade him to at a price that people will be shocked about how low it is for a guy of his level and his Green let me add one more stat goendy let me add one more stat greenie um he has missed at least 20 games in six of the last seven years so he did play 62
