taken me first instead of tim duncan this is another true story um i’ve talked about it with greg papovic um there was a short conversation in the san antonio front office because you know there’s a huge kansas connection there coach pop started at kansas he was an assistant coach at kansas uh rc buford was an assistant coach with larry brown also and he’s the gm of of the spurs still and so these guys are there they’ve seen kansas quite a bit and they they’ve watched me quite a bit they’re probably for my teammates but they said they had a a conversation about taking me first instead of tim duncan and i told i talked to pop i was like “is that true?” this is after i retired from the nba i was working in broadcasting for the pacers actually and i went down for a postgame interview and i was like “pop one of the guys has put me up to this i have to ask you was it true that there was actually a conversation about picking me instead of tim duncan with the first pick in 1997?” he goes “yeah.” it was a short conversation but yeah
