Mark Cuban’s Mavericks Sale Keeps Looking Stranger | DLLS Mavs Podcast

together starting right now It’s good to be back on the show It’s lovely to have you back Oh thank you What What show did you do yesterday on musical chairs Uh I did a meeting show yesterday I did make it onto the DS Rangers podcast with uh with Ben’s job Yeah Yeah Ben is on vacation I was Ben Yeah Basically we’re even doing musical chairs right now because Ben is out So I’m Ben Kevin is out So you’re Kevin Tanner is still Tanner But otherwise everything else is different Mark Stein who will be on the show segments two and three talking about Cooper Flags visit Dallas He’s now Bob No no for his sake I hope not Okay Yeah But he will be on the show segments two and three We’ll get into Cooper Flags visit to Dallas with the Mavericks uh on Tuesday and Wednesday What all happened Talk a little bit more about uh just kind of what’s going on in in Mavs lands and the latest things he’s hearing But the big news from last night uh the big NBA news I I guess it’s it’s been a pretty newsy week Uh we’re gonna focus on the uh the explosive sale uh of the Los Angeles Lakers and Genie Bus agreeing to sell to Mark Walter uh for a valuation of the Lakers of $10 billion Oh my god Yeah Yeah Yeah We uh we actually pulled our money and we came in second We came close Yeah Yeah We were What What I didn’t actually I I didn’t see the final number I did not know it was $10 billion My understanding from what I’ve seen of of the reporting is that it’s a valuation of 10 billion So uh the actual sale price may be below that But Mark Walter is somebody who I I believe his overall asset holdings is valued like 500 billion 350 billion like like way up there He owns the uh the Dodgers and the LA Sparks uh to name just two very prominent Americanbased sports uh holdings of his but he also has uh yeah a lot of other stuff Interest and Chelsea Football Club Uh on and on and on and on It’s a lot of money He is buying the Lakers and Genie Bus is going to remain in charge at least for a few years That’s what the reporting says And it does remind it does quite remind us of a situation that just played out in Dallas with the Mavericks where Mark Cuban swore up and down said to anybody who would listen that he was going to remain in charge of the basketball front office in a story from the Athletic by my good friend Mike Voronov Um he quoted a source who is close to the Laker sale Uh I believe he some sort of Laker source Uh quote this cannot be Mark Cuban She meaning Genie Bus will continue to run the team for a significant number of years after the deal closes So not only is Mark Cuban and his cell of the Mavericks not only is it different not only is what he said not true it is now the reference point for any owner of an NBA team selling and wanting to remain in charge Uh it’s not the reference point It’s now what people are pointing at and saying we’re not going to do it like that Um let’s start there because I have more to say about this I just don’t you know I’m hosting now I’ I’ve gota I’ve got to be the guy I’ve got to be the setup man I’ve gotta be a traditional point guard Yeah I’m about to hammer this thing 400 yards Like Steve Nash I’m not going to start hunting shots for myself until the fourth segment So you’re unaggressive like Tyrese Hallebertton Kendrick Perkins is slamming you right now Oh unbelievable Oh well Stephen A is just playing solitary so I’m not too worried about him He’s not even watching Um yeah I mean he it it has become a cautionary tale You know there was this uh I guess what we can only believe is this sort of implied handshake agreement between Mark Cuban uh and Patrick Deont I don’t think believed at this point I I think that all reporting and even Mark Cuban when he’s talked about it he said yes there was a handshake agreement Can you even believe that Can you even believe that because at the time he said it was written and that he would be owner or he would be basketball basketball operations man for the rest of his life Um now the story has changed to where well it was a handshake thing and then the story changed in an argument with an ex- employee uh this guy Gavin Malloy who’s a friend of mine good dude Um where Mark said that it was he was not allowed by the NBA to negotiate this And now none of this stuff the Lakers sale doesn’t really matter You know Mark whether he got a handshake deal or got ripped off doesn’t really matter But what really does matter for Mavs fans and for this team both in the past you know in the recent past like in what happened in February but then also moving forward what matters is Mark is now completely removed from the the equation when it comes to making decisions It is now all Nico Harrison Patrick Deont is not really part of this at all He is kind of given Nico full autonomy although maybe his tune has changed a little bit in light of uh the way the last five or six months have gone around here Um but it is very clearly important to both the sale of the Boston Celtics uh which happened last year and then the sale of the Lakers which happened last night Uh it’s important that those former owners who have not only finances invested in this thing but emotion and time and energy and love invested in this thing that they retain some level of say in this situation before an outsider comes in just kind of throws a grenade in the room and says like “Oh let’s see what happens.” You know and that is important I think particularly for Mavs fans because so much of the Mavs’ identity and brand and all this stuff whatever over the last 25 years is directly a result of Mark Cuban’s ownership and fans’s belief that he has their best interest and the team’s best interest in mind always That it’s ne I mean you can say this but everyone knows it’s not really true It’s not always about Mark’s ego It’s about what’s best for the Mavs Uh whereas I don’t think many Mavs fans could say with a straight face that decisions that have been made over the last few months have nothing to do with ego or like wanting power You know I feel like that’s every decision over the last 3 months has been a result of that So it is really really important Um and also the last two sales of teams that are far more valuable and far more historically significant than the Mavs have negotiated that directly into their sale despite Mark saying that he tried to but was shot down by the league like it’s proven he’s just a liar The dude is just lying Um but also other owners have now learned from his mistake Yeah Yeah You said you said other deals You said that uh you know as we were focusing on Bobby the uh the disconnect get me off Um so you mentioned that that the the past two sales have had the structure Um the other sell you’re referring to of course is the Boston Celtics who sold in March for $6.1 billion or a $6.1 billion uh valuation Although the understanding is is that the uh the interest group buying the Celtics will buy 100% uh of the shares or the the ownership stake whatever you want to refer to it as We know a lot about business you and me Yeah absolutely Absolutely So Wick Grossbet uh who is the Gross Beck who is the current governor of the Boston Celtics uh says he will remain in his role as CEO through the 202728 NBA season I do want to point out that what Jeanie Bus and what Wick Grossback are doing is is slightly different than what Mark Cuban was trying to do Mark Cuban was not trying to be you know the controlling uh CEO or the just the guy like making the decision he just still wanted basketball operations Uh which maybe that’s a more complicated thing Maybe uh it should have been done differently My understanding is is with the Boston Celtics sale Um Gross Bank is going to remain CEO until the 2728 NBA season Uh but that’s also when the sale will will finalize Um apparently 51% upfront uh 49% uh by that point by the 2728 season whether it’s uh you know I guess by the end of it or at least by the end of that NBA financial year that’s a little bit different It’s still a majority stake if they are buying 51% of the the team right now Uh but I I I don’t I mean Mark Mark really just you know it felt like the other thing to note here is that Mark sold the team for 3.5 billion which is far less than what those other less Now the Lakers are the premier team of the NBA The Celtics are the most are the second most historically relevant team in the NBA uh whether you want to make the argues that the Warriors maybe have surpassed them that the Knicks uh you know but the Lakers and the and the Celtics are you know absolutely the two most storied historic teams uh of the sport However 3.5 million or billion is still a ways off from even the 6.1 billion that the Celtics were evaluated for that they sold for And our understanding at the time was that if there was some sort of discount given that if Mark had taken this to an open market if he had looked for the highest bidder uh no matter what he almost certainly could have got more money Wait a minute That sounds really like what just happened to the I I’m having weird flashbacks right now A lot of people just being like “Oh this is the only deal that we can do.” Huh And you know honestly in this instance Nico’s uh logic for the Luca Dantis trade is more convincing to me Uh even if it’s not convincing even if you don’t buy that it’s at least a reason Mark Cuban’s reason or at least this was thought at the time and is still my best understanding was that you know by selling to a very specific uh family that he had a long-term relationship with uh business working relationship that his ability to keep running the team to keep serving kind of as this mask uh mast head type figure was at least going to be continued you know just by this process that if he had gone and sold to you know a younger tech person who was kind of like him that it would be a situation where you know they might want to be Mark Cuban They might want to be the guy with full control If you just sell to real estate people well you know they’re real estate people They don’t know anything about basketball These are exact quotes from Mark Cuban Uh he’s like I don’t know anything about real estate They don’t know anything about basketball This was his understanding This is his on record a lot of his verbalization of the logic of selling to the add family and just instantly it got shot down So it’s just it’s weird It’s weird It’s really weird that Mark Cuban um could have quite fr quite frankly got fleeced as bad as he did I don’t know how you get to the idea that this was not possible to happen I don’t know how you don’t have your team of lawyers make sure that there is some certainty that if this is why you’re selling if this is why you’re selling it to that family for this price for this result that it doesn’t actually carry over And what does it matter What does it affect the Dallas Mavericks on the basketball court next season uh this summer Not really at all Oh I I beg I beg to differ I mean they have the team they do right now because Cuban sold the team Yeah Yeah I’m just saying now now that he’s not in charge none none of this matters But it is bizarre looking back and thinking about what could have been if Mark Cuban had set this up in a way that other owners other governors of the team clearly are learning from but maybe not learning from Maybe they always would have done it this way no matter what Mark Cuban did And in fact I tend to side that way It’s possible you know but I I think that sort of you know first off Mark lying about it is different altogether Um but finally kind of coming clean and saying look we had a handshake deal is very emblematic you know based on things that Tim McMahon has reported over the years that Mark and that you have reported over the years and also as we learned about the Cuban and Donnie lawsuit that was carrying out you know publicly a few years ago is that that is emblematic about how a lot of the business was done you know uh both on and off the floor with the Mavs for a really really long time Very family business Yeah And uh that has its that has its strengths you know uh it also has its drawbacks Uh and now you know it is completely as far removed from that idea as possible which also has its pros and cons but you know I think um most glaringly the con is the Mavs are now run by a guy Patrick Deont who’s part of the add family and know everything but like the depending on who you believe did just rip off Mark who he does have a very long-standing business relationship with So like the Mavs are now run by a guy who just ripped off his friend or like close associate um or duped him you know or took advantage of him or whatever Uh and that doesn’t have to be misled and that even pushed back when when Mark was saying one thing that he believes Yeah And like I don’t really care like who’s whatever how much percentage of say Mark Cuban has Um but that still doesn’t really sit right with me you know It just doesn’t really sit right with me And then obviously this guy that even Cuban himself says doesn’t know anything about basketball Well him selling it to that guy doesn’t sit right with me That guy giving control to Nico firmly doesn’t sit right with me Not seeking outside suggestions from anybody else for at any point for any reason doesn’t sit right with me Like none of it really sits right with me That’s all Yeah It’s just all it’s all very business and and you know as as as we you know actually yesterday’s show when we did musical chairs and I was on the DLS star show we talked a lot about how you know the you know uh the Dallas Stars you know for the first time fired a coach who was under contract you know the Texas Rangers were a team that just won the World Series uh by bringing in a bunch of free agents you know selling their farm off and bringing in a front bunch of front uh bunch of free agents and and and it worked and but all across other than the Cowboys all across the metroplex it is interesting that these teams are getting you much more business much more uh you know like the the bottom line is the bottom line It does it does seem like you know what what was what cultures existed what organizations you know what what they valued what they what they stood for Not to not to say I think the Mavericks is the most extreme case but you know it’s a it’s a changing landscape Um but yeah that’s uh we’re going to we’re going to talk to Marstein about that a little bit uh in the next segment but uh coming up right now uh after this ad break uh we’re going to get some info on Cooper Flags visit to the Dallas Mavericks uh earlier this week I’m going to help you noticed Indeed Yes Mark Stein I want to see if Mark Stein has a Big Brother’s Big Sister shirt Oh man disappointing We were hoping you’d come You’re not a big brother or big sister huh Mark I was not given a shirt H Whose fault is that GM Ben No one else to blame but GM Ben Uh did you not seems like seems like a good It seems like a good uh good nomination Yeah Mark Cooper Flag was in Dallas earlier this week uh as I think we all know as you first reported So what do what do you do What’s what’s the rundown What can you tell us about this uh this city changing visit from uh the young man from Duke From Maine and from Duke as they say Well my favorite part is the two meals he had Tuesday night He went to the famed Bob Steak and Chop House on Lemon with a large contingent of Mavs officials Nico Harrison Jason Kidd Rick Weltz Michael Finley I believe Matt Ricardi and Andrew Baker from the front office were also there And notably Cooper Flag arrived solo He came to the dinner as a party of one to join all those Mavs officials I thought that was notable And Wednesday was his day on the court You know we were told going in that there would be a quote light on court component Uh you know the way it was described to me was that he he wanted to go for a full hour He wanted to you know he wanted to go ahead and do a draft workout and it was a you know a huge organizational presence that got to watch him and the work Impressive That’s just all I kept hearing Impressive He he you know he is he is the modern NBA forward that every team wants He can do so many things he can handle You know we’ll see how he shoots it in the NBA but I have to say the early rumbles I’ve heard that you know shot looks pretty damn good from from what they’re saying on the streets Um I you know he’s got he’s got he’s got size strength just a very versatile young man And uh I think summer league you know again in summer league I can’t expect to see him play more than a game or two but we will all be dialed into that He also got a visit to the AAC to see his future home arena And then last night I was told after Bob Steak and Chop House he followed the Markstein dining plan to a tea and went to Nick and Sam’s last night Oh wow completing the completing an elite Dallas steakhouse double Like I said I couldn’t have pl you know if I was in charge of the planning very likely those would have been those would have been the two stops I do not I all I know about Nick and Sams is he was there with some future teammates I don’t know specifically who I obviously was not there you know we can all guess but um I thought that’s interesting too that he went to a second dinner with some of the guys who will soon be fellow Mavericks So Mark I go ahead I have a two-part question for you One is it reasonable in your opinion if we do find out which Mavs were there that the Mavs who weren’t there are all going to soon be traded And part two do you think with Cooper being from Maine do you think people from Maine are kind of like over lobster or do you think that he’s pretty into it Second question is a great question I I have never met Cooper Flag never spoken to him so I do not know where you would stand on that on that issue That’s a good one I mean my I I’ve only I have only had one main experience in my life and I was stuck in the main airport for hours and hours and hours like a hundred years ago on a long travel journey So all I remember in those this was this was the early 80s there were lobster tanks in the main airport That’s how that’s how much lobster is a part of the culture there And this was this was more than 40 years ago So uh good question that I can’t answer On your first part of your question I know you’re just trying to be mischievous Uh you know I I don’t I don’t know which Mavericks are in town and which Mavericks are not So I would say the answer to that question is no man Is that is that a satisfactory answer right there There’s a lot of I don’t knows Mark There’s a lot of I don’t know I do my best I I’m not going to pretend I’m not going to give you guys pretend answers when I don’t know If I know the cheesy boy says Cooper said in an interview that he does not like lobster So wow So see interesting I I didn’t know that So I I thought the most interesting detail of all of this uh that that you just mentioned is that that Cooper attended the first team dinner or the first meeting with the Mavericks uh by himself Um I don’t know if you have anything else to add to that or or anything to to read into it And I’m not saying anything should be read into it you know in any context but that is pretty at least at least uh based off your experiences of these situations based off my understanding of these situations that that is a very unusual thing to say the least Yeah I mean you would have anticipated him being accompanied by his agent by an agent right Yeah Yeah And that was not the case you know And what’s so interesting is you know he’s so young and we’ve talked about it so many times If he was born I think his birthday is December 21st 2006 He was born 11 days later he’s not eligible for this draft if he’s born on January 1st So um yeah I think I think pretty that is pretty impressive and notable that for his first big sit down with the Mavs on the Mavs turf that he attended by himself No question Yeah So what’s next You know is is now just a a waiting period I mean I I I guess I guess it has to be uh you know the the next time Dallas is going to see Cooper Flag is uh almost uh less under under a week away and and all this officially begins But you know just just the fact that they were able to meet with him does that you know does that change anything or or is it just kind of the the early jump start to what is going to be you know a a a very exciting next year for him uh in Dallas Yeah I mean obviously it’s just day one the first time he’s had any contact with the franchise but I mean yeah we all know what’s going to happen a week from yesterday He is going to be the number one overall pick how swiftly he’s back in Dallas I would imagine it’s pretty soon after he is officially drafted And man it’s going to be a wild Wednesday that we will be covering live We will be covering live at night I think Right Live show Wednesday I don’t have we even announced that I just failed I have failed everyone We will be live for the entirety of the first round of the NBA draft That is one week from yesterday Breaking news And round two we will be live for like an hour or two or more if the Mavs get in the mix at all Uh near the end of the second round So we will be with you all night on draft night And draft nights on draft on draft nights Yes As a reminder as of last year the NBA splits the televised coverages and the uh first and second round of the draft which I love Thursday I think it is fantastic I don’t understand people who don’t like it I really don’t I really don’t Like everybody loves the draft and all the minutia that that is generated by the draft Why not spread it over two days rather than one And you know last year now the execution of the second round on ESPN A lot of people were turned off by that But this time the second round as well will be a nighttime affair So I personally I thought it was too hard to do 60 picks in one night And then it’s not just the 60 picks You after the after the second round you get that flurry of all the players signing two ways and summer league deals who weren’t drafted It’s just too much in one night I like it much better to split it up 30 and 30 and let’s let every drafty have his moment Yeah Bobby do you think there’s any concerns about the uh the amount of red meat that Cooper Flag seems to be consuming and perhaps possibly only consumes I don’t know I I hope that he I’m sure that you know as a as a strapping young lad of already 68 or whatever he’s probably eaten quite a few vegetables Uh but it is really important especially for the GM that is about to employ him allegedly Um it’s really important to to maintain a balanced diet NBA players like steakouses I don’t really think it’s a big uh I don’t think that’s a big news news flash So do NBA writers That was a uh it was I like tacos I I I assure you that was a a a very dryly uh asked question I’m about to get so mad at Kevin Gray in the chat Kevin you’re on vacation You were the worst vacationer in the world Well we can’t comment because What is he saying in the chat Well we can’t read it That only encourage him Yeah that’s right keep talking All right Oh sourcing texts Uhoh Uhoh Yeah And the light keeps going off Oh no man There’s power issues This is this is this is Mark How many devices are you like just plugged into this time of year Like 15 20 one for every team But anyway four right now Four Oh wow All right I’m going to set I’m going to set you up with a little monologue as you finish this text The I’m listening intently to every word Keep going I would sure hope so Most everybody should be when I speak The Lakers sold Uh Genie Bus sold the Lakers for a valuation of 10 billion the largest a sports franchise has ever been sold for in human history I believe Um and I don’t know I don’t know if you went back and like you know adjusted the value figures I would imagine even then that this is probably the largest ever spent on a sports franchise Uh we tal we spent the first segment talking a bit about how uh every time this happens and by every time I mean the two times this has happened this year with the Lakers and and a few months ago the Celtics It really does make it look stranger that Mark Cuban sold for what I think is still fair to say a slight discount or at least he did not maximize the amount of the sale uh on the open market he sold to somebody directly and said that he was going to remain in charge and he is not in charge He has no control over the Mavericks He is nothing but a minority owner and a superfan And yet with both of the sales that have happened this year and we’ll see what happens with the Lakers but even sources close to the Lakers are saying this is not going to be a Mark Cuban situation They’re even using Mark’s sale of the Dallas Mavericks as a reference point as a cautionary tale as Bobby said So what’s do you have any takeaway about you know just looking back at you know Mark sale versus these sales that have gone on Yeah And hang on one sec I just realized something Another test coming in Who’s getting traded No I I just tweeted that I just tweeted that I was on the show and I think I don’t think the tweet went through God Well everyone go and RT that Got to hit Well they they can if it didn’t happen Um but yeah we’re it’s it’s it’s just frustrating man My de my stuff ain’t working here Um so basically look when the Mavericks were sold that was definitely said that the price could and should have been higher But one of the reasons we were told that the price was reported to be shy of 4 million and I was later told that it was actually in excess of 4 billion But look I’ve tried to pin down a precise valuation and even that a year and a half later has proved elusive I don’t think 3.5 billion is the exact reading on this whole transaction but just the fact that it was in the four range Yes that’s too low for what the Dallas Mavericks are especially when you know Luca Donuch was still a Dallas Maverick at that point And one of the justifications that was routinely cited at the time was that because Mark Cuban said he was promised operational he was promised control of basketball operations as part of the sale that was widely assumed and you got to say assumed because it all fell apart to be the reason that the price was lower because there’s no question that the Mavericks should could and should have fetched more than 4 billion based on the prices we’re seeing now with the Celtics and the Lakers And look I reported it in December of 2023 shortly after Christmas after the sale was ratified That arrangement was not in writing Mark Cuban publicly said he would continue with basketball control but it was not in writing We’ve known it was not in writing since right after Christmas December 2023 And you know you guys said it All the discussion since the Lakers sale emerged since news of the Lakers sale emerged yesterday has been that Jeanie Bus does have it in writing Now league bylaws also say that the bus family has to own at least 15% for her to continue to operate as governor You know Mark Cuban had that Mark Cuban’s stake was 27% That 27% share that Mark Cuban still holds in the Mavericks That’s larger we than we’ve seen some majority owners have in recent years I mean that is still a significant stake in the franchise Now the Dumont and Add families can can buy more of that away from Mark Cuban at their discretion and take it down to 7% but at this point Mark Cuban still holds 27% but he never had the basketball control arrangement and writing Now in March Mark Cuban said in a Facebook post that became a news story all over the place Mark Cuban said in March in that Facebook post that it was the NBA that wouldn’t allow specific language about him retaining basketball control that it was the league that would not allow it to be in the agreement Adam Silver shortly after that did a pre press conference and basically said that was not the case So there’s still a lot about this that we don’t have answers for We don’t know And uh you know on the Dumont side any attempt to ask questions along this line have you know they’re never fielded So right you know we’ll keep trying to get those answers but that’s where it is Yeah And I I made the distinction in the first segment that that retaining basketball control is is Mark Cuban’s idea was to do something slightly mildly different than than certainly this this you know just remaining governor um you know remaining CEO in in uh Grossback’s case in in the Boston Celtics But if Mark Cuban was the governor in February 2025 that means he still has the ability to say no we are not trading Luca Donuch to my utmost understanding Is that correct If he’s governor in the in the if he owns 20 you know he has 15% And look it was never suggested that he was going to remain governor It was just said that he was going to still have final say over basketball And look that obviously proved not to be the case It was already not the case by the first trade deadline after the sale in 2024 the 2024 trade deadline when the Mavericks acquired Gaffford and PJ Washington By that point Nico Harrison was already essentially calling the shots Now what I would say though I certainly ne a lot of us I think were skeptical The minute we heard that Mark Cuban would retain operational control of the basketball department there was skepticism among us on our show There was skepticism leaguewide just as there is skepticism in Boston And even when the Lakers news broke there was skepticism How long will this really last How long will Jeanie Bus really retain Governor Powers The skepticism was always going to be there On the flip side though I would say I certainly never imagined a scenario where Patrick Dumont wouldn’t even ask Mark Cuban’s opinion on a Luca Dodge trade That’s where it got to in February to the point that Mark Cuban wasn’t even told about the deal until it was essentially done and agreed to and about to be announced And so it’s not just that Mark Cuban didn’t have basketball say like it was said he would but that but at the point that Luca was traded he wasn’t even a sounding board for Patrick Dumont And like I said that that’s the part I think that surprises me the most And then briefly here but Emeay Adoka a an extension was announced by the Houston Rockets uh for their head coach That is the second of five coaches that has been extended since the New York Knicks uh reached out and tried to you know woo these uh people employed people uh to their organization Obviously it started I I guess not alone but but started in in in the most visible news cycle surrounded revolved around Jason Kidd uh who the Knicks also tried to poach Does that mean anything Does that mean that there’s a Jason Kid extension coming up And uh yeah where where do we where do we stand on all of that I would think so I think it should because I you know the Knicks did as you said the Knicks ultimately requested permission to speak to five coaches who are under contract and they were rejected in all five cases It was Eime Udoka it was Chris Finch it was Quinn Snyder in Atlanta it was Billy Donovan in Chicago and it was Jason Kid in Dallas But I believe and based on my reporting and what’s been out you know I there are there are I’ll just say it like this there are many people in coaching circles who believe that Jason Kid was at the top of their list And I know he just got an extension last year because the Mavericks feared that the Lakers were going to come after him So after the Clipper series Patrick Dumont did give Jason Kidd a two-year extension but this is the way the NBA works The Knicks wanted him I think the Knicks to some degree still want him And look the Mavericks did what they were supposed to do They said no they have Jason Kidd under contract But to me he has to get an extension I don’t think there’s any question Will it happen When it happens we’ll have to see But that’s my that’s my view of it I mean you guys you guys tell me what you see I mean I see a coach I I see a team that is on a stated three-year window And I see a team where the GM and the uh best player and in all likelihood very soon the other best player in Kyrie Irving will probably you know our best guess right now is that he will probably be signed to a three-year extension And I see a head coach that’s not on that timeline So if Nico Harrison if the Dallas Mavericks believe that Jason Kidd is the right coach to run out uh you know to coach the team in this three-year window a three-year window that they have all pointed to said referenced acknowledged is the window that they’re operating under um for the head coach’s contract not to align with the everybody else’s uh would make me think that they do not necessarily that there is not necessarily 100% belief that Jason Kidd you know is as critical and as important to this three-year window as the rest of the pieces are So that’s that’s my read of the situation and you know I guess I guess the news of whether he does get extended or not will dictate what that means Yeah I just think you should and it usually doesn’t ever happen this way but you should do whatever it takes to avoid a situation where you have like a lame duck coach in the last year of his deal Vibes just get weird for everybody And that wouldn’t be this upcoming season It would be the year after that but by then Kyrie’s fully back that would be unless the Mavs make any other seismic changes between now and then the Mavs’ best chance to have a great regular season and a playoff run because Kyrie AD flag will all be healthy you know to start the year Presumably if you have that cloud hanging over it it could just be weird Yeah And and I don’t like when things are weird I like when things are cool And this is referring to Yes I don’t remember who I uh you I don’t remember joke don’t worry about that I don’t remember which inter I think there was a recent interview at some point within the last two three five months whatever it was that Nico Harrison said he’s under contract for three more years I don’t remember which maybe it was the last press conference he did but at some point it was it was the closed door media session That’s where he said it So in the closed door media session that’s his words but yes he has said he has three years He acknowledged that he has three years left on his contract Jason Kidd at this point only has two To me at a minimum you you you extend him one more year so he and Nico are on the same timeline Like to me that’s you know it just seems obvious Yeah agreed Mark we appreciate it as always Uh we will see you next week Uh we have a show tomorrow but keep uh keep grinding the news Keep uh keep letting us know Uh before you break any news make sure you call me and Bobby first uh as more information on what they are doing and how you can help maybe even becoming a big yourself go to bbbs org/allcity Thank you all so much for helping us achieve that goal to help out a great cause Shout out to you you listener Yes you right there Yep Yes Yes I’m I’m speaking through my through your computer screen directly to you Shout out to you indeed Yeah Well said All right We’ve got to do some miaulpas We’ve got to look dumb and bad and sad and idiotic Yeah We’ve got to we’ve got to embrace the fact that we are mere mortals that we are fallible So we’re going to do Frosty Takes brought to you by Wendy’s I think we’ve got a video lined up Yeah So I need to This one needs a little introduction All right So I think I someone I don’t know who did it It might have been me Someone scrubbed footage from the internet of me saying “The Mavs are good Deal with it.” at some point right before Christmas of 2024 Is that really nowhere I I could not find it this morning I was looking around I looked at like 15 intros I could not find it Times I remember I still remember and I like all the shows blur together I do remember that It was a great opening It was the best cold open I’ve ever done in my life It was a fantastic opening The MA Times were times were good Vibes were at an all-time high The Mavs had won a million out of a million in two games It was great Now Christmas happened on Christmas Day Of course Luca gets hurt against the Minnesota Timberwolves And at the time you know we thought okay this might be a kind of a thorny situation He might miss a couple weeks maybe but the Mavs are still great They’re going to be fine right And so I was trying to start off this ad from our friends at Shady Rays with a little optimism And it turns out from Wendy’s positivity no from our friends at Shady Rays during the ad I see I see My frosty cold take is actually that optimism is good and here’s why Well it’s pretty cloudy outside today and there’s a lot of doom and gloom in Mavsland But as they said in that one play the sun will come out tomorrow It’s not true The sun did not come out the next day or the day after or in fact it has not been sunny since then Things got things got so much worse Okay Luca never played again for the Mavs Got traded They got AD AD played one game got hurt Daniel Gaffford got hurt Kyrie Irving got hurt Derek Lively played and then didn’t then played and then didn’t It was terrible The Mavs uh limped to 10th in the standings Made it to the final playing game Got curb stomped by the Memphis Grizzlies Now the Clouds did part a little bit whenever the Mavs won the lottery in May but that was a whole different season That was like a whole different year Uh so my frosty cold take is that sometimes the power of positivity isn’t that much of a power at all Tim man that was deep and profound And I have a little bit of advice for you Okay When I’m really down in the dumps when I’m really feeling bad you know my go-to What’s that Oh Wendy’s Frosty Wendy’s is putting a twist on the classic with all new frosty flavors Find your new fave flavor and clock it for a sweet treat time anytime including midnight or later A refresh on a classic Got to be Wendy’s is that participating US Wendy’s hours may vary by location I love an ice cold frosty to make me feel better on a cloudy day All right we got 8 minutes and uh what what do you want to talk about A lot of I see a lot Do you have any bad takes Uh no I guess well the segment’s over I guess Tim just emerges scot-free once again Well I just don’t have any You know I I I went back and I scoured the internet and and I said I said the Pacers were going to win game four and but they should have They should have They should have Everything I said about the game was right It’s just the result was different in the end Yeah they were in position to win A lot of people in the chat are talking about how good Cooper Flag’s going to be Do you have any thoughts on that I mean I next week is our Cooper Flag week Like it’s unofficial It’s not spirit week It’s not I don’t think we have any branding for it but we’re going to have a lot of Cooper flag next week Not like Monday We should We should like finally sit down and do our full like to the extent that we can within the power of our YouTube overlords finally sit down and do our our deep dive our analysis I’ve certainly Yeah screenshots I’ve been watching some tape I think he’s going to be uh get this I think he’s going to be pretty good Damn that’s awesome But I don’t know if you have any more advanced takes takes beyond that that uh are good for good for the show today or we can just save him till next week Oh okay What about what about some topical news I don’t remember who said this I’m sorry I also don’t know if uh they’re on our our list of our good list or our naughty list but I think it was Andy Larson um who is a a Jazz insider You love Andy Yeah Really really uh really prominent Jazz reporter said that uh the Mavs are a potential landing spot if the Jazz do indeed decide to move on from Colin Ston Um obviously we’ve been on record saying the Mavs need guard help and it would be even better if that guard would also have the capability to not only defend at the point of attack but also play alongside Kyrie Irving when he comes back but also be the lead guard without Kyrie Irving but also demonstrate durability but also be affordable but also maybe even not be 30 years old or older And it feels like a lot of boxes that Colin Saxon is checking off So I’m just curious to hear your thoughts on him Yeah I remember back in back in the uh 20 24 playoff run Uh a lot of times like obviously Luca and Kyrie are on the court you know as much as they can be A little bit of staggering but especially when games got tough and close and tight in the fourth quarter and those two were on the court Uh the closest player was uh Kyrie if Luca had the ball Luca if Kyrie had the ball And they did that you know to you know you can’t overload You can’t help off the nearest guy you can’t kind of bite down and and and just offer some some initial pressure You can certainly zone up that side of the court a little bit better but the thing is to you know it’s just it’s just already you’ve got to fully stick to your man because even if you like take a half step off Kyrie Irving and Luca Donic has the ball and he’s you know kind of on the the far wing you know kind of where the the corner and the you know like the very end of the three right next to the corner and Kyrie’s kind of like spotting up top of the key This is a situation where uh all it takes is a fraction of space and you get the ball to Kyrie and he’s the catch and shoot threat and he’s able to drive off that and it’s just really important It’s really so like having a second creator I know this is pretty obvious stuff but having a second creator makes your first creator better If you have one creator like there is a limit to how good they can be based off the team around them And Dallas is going into you know like Anthony Davis can’t be that for Kyrie Irving That’s not to say that it’s the only way to play You know this was a strategy born of specifically Dallas having Luca and Kyrie but you look all around the playoffs you know even even the Pacers who have their their their true second option You can even say first option obviously Tyrese Hallebertton his offense you know he’s he’s hurt but you know he’s not he’s not a 30 point averager but Tyrese Option is their first option or Tyrese Hallebertton is their first option Pascal Seakkum is their second leading scoreer Pascal Seakkum is more a little bit more akin to an Anthony Davis type player but the Pacers still have Nimhart Nimhart will go entire games taking maybe only five shots but Nimhart gives you that second creator because he is always capable of doing that He is always capable like you have to respect his ability to do that even if you know he uses it and and and locks you know is is often a a player who defers a lot but you still need a player like that And I just don’t think Naji Marshall for example is quite what Nimhart is to the Pacers I don’t think uh and certainly you know and I don’t think Anthony Davis is is a replica of that Cooper Flag could be We’ll see We’ll see I mean that that’s the big question is just like how high is his offensive ceiling just his rookie year But you know we I I I talked a lot in fact I wrote about this the you know the the two players the two collegiate prospects that that I think were best coming out of uh you know coming into the NBA were Anthony Davis and Zion Williamson And I think Cooper Flag is in that tier Did you know that Anthony Davis averaged 13.5 points his rookie season Like there is a scenario and I I think Cooper’s going to do better than that I think I think he’s I think he’s going to be I think he’s going to be 15 or 16 or something probably more in that range but there’s a scenario where it just takes a little bit for a player like Cooper to to develop to become comfortable on the offensive end And so Colin Stum to me as a player who can much closer uh much more closely give Dallas real creators once Kyrie comes back and have the flexibility to play together That’s a very long-winded way of saying that I love the idea of someone like Colin Ston and I think I would give something up to go get a player like that rather than rely on the minimum market Yeah I’ve I’ve almost always liked Sexon and I also really like kind of you know part of the reason that I like Russ is because I think dunks are cool and all that stuff and also part of that was trolling and I know whatever people get real fired up about Russell Westbrook but the thing that I have always really liked about Russ is that he is just like kind of a maniac you know Um Rick Carl would always say they can’t all be milk drinkers That’s part of why I always like I love Naji That’s part of why I love PJ because like those guys will just mix it up man Like they’re just kind of they’re a little they got a couple screws loose you know and Colin Saxon is kind of that guy too Super intense plays really hard Cooper Flag very much seems to be like that Just really really intense and I like that kind of attitude uh for a player and for a team Um last season is just one season and everything that Utah’s done over the last few years really just kind of like hurts my soul I I do not like the Jazz at all Uh but last season when Sexon would drive to the basket he averaged more than 12 drives per game which is a lot That’s more than Kyrie averaged last year Uh but when he would drive to the basket he only passed 30% of the time 30.9% of the time to be exact which is slightly more often than Kyrie Naji and PJ but it’s less than guys like Jaden Hardy less than less than Max Christy less than Spencer Denwitty So Saxon is another guy that when he drives to the basket he’s he’s trying to score He’s trying to shoot or draw a foul I do think it would be great if the Mavs had more guys that could drive to pass But there’s a player that there’s a reason that players like Saxon are available and players that generally drive to pass aren’t It’s because those guys are really valuable If nothing else though Saxon is active He’s kind of insane and he’s pretty good And so I’m I’m in on it if it’s not too uh costly to go get him for sure You know I agree with all that Those are good numbers It does make me think of like you know even even that percentage even that statistic you’ve got to kind of okay why is Jaden Hardy passing out of drives Sometimes it’s because he’s finding the opposite uh corner shooter Sometimes it’s because he’s driving without a clear plan Without a plan Yeah Yeah Exactly So So everything is contextual but uh you know what isn’t Uh the DLS Mav Show which will be back tomorrow at noon Uh without There will be no context on tomorrow’s show Yes It’s gonna be awesome Skyhart’s picking out the topics Uh Bobby thank you Tanner thank you I’m Tim Ko Uh we will see you then Bye [Music] In light of Jeanie Buss selling the LA Lakers, yet seemingly retaining control of the organization for years to come (and a similar situation happening with the sale of the Boston Celtics), the DLLS Mavs crew ponders why Mark Cuban claimed in an argument with a former employee that he was not allowed by the NBA to negotiate such an agreement into his sale of the Mavs to Miriam Adelson and Patrick Dumont. We all know what happened afterward. Plus, the crew dives into Cooper Flagg’s visit to Dallas, news and notes from around the league, and one (1) bad take Bobby had back in December.

  1. Wannabe Candy store owner tells cuban 'I will buy all your candies from you'. Howdy Doody Cuby licks his lips and says 'Gee Golly I sure loves me my candy'. Wannabe says 'I'll tell ya what, i'll buy them from you and you can eat them all'.
    Cuby says 'For Life'
    W.C. answers 'Anything you want'.
'Oh Boy' cuby yells and jumps up and down on Oprahs bought from ebay couch and starts licking lollipops one lick at a time and throwing each out the window where they fall to the dirty ground. He says 'I'm not greedy, I'll share'.

  2. I don't believe Cuban lied to us, I believe the league likes him because he used to talk about them and pretty openly , so I believe they refused let him be in the organization, and buss is the Lakers so they allowed her.

  3. A bit of fresh air from last pod.. weird to hear from a stranger with unpleasamt take. Dont move chairs anymore in the building.
