Hour 4: Tim LaComb Talking Utah Jazz & NBA Draft | Slacker Radio Headlines | Feedback of the Day
djpk it’s 975 the zone we’re joined now by Tim Lome Utah Jazz analyst for SCG Media tim good morning nice slice by Hatch right there to bring us in thank you paul McCartney is very with a little love we can work it out i agree i 100% agree paul McCartney is 82 today so he’s the artist we can figure out the whole damn thing as he said now I’ve seen you in concert i don’t really see you covering McCartney songs you ever cover McCartney song no but you know I like a challenge for that one i’d need some things that sound like they’re from another world i remember hearing synthesizers for the first time and melted my brain you remember that too DJ i know you do with with great detail you probably know where you were standing and what you were wearing but I don’t have that kind of memory or recall i don’t remember where I was standing what it was wearing nice all right let us discuss a couple of things with you right now Tim shall we the NBA draft is bearing down now some of the information floating around out there it’s lion season as Walt Parn used to say so a lot of things could uh just be made up a whole cloth that throw people off the scent but Ace Bailey is dropping like a rock and many people including PK about a month ago are saying Ace Bailey not really the Jazz guy now it turns out he might not be other people’s guy i’ve seen him as low as six some speculation he could even fall to seven or eight which seems extreme to me but hey I didn’t think Sher Sanders was going to fall to the fourth round either i thought he could fall but I didn’t think he was falling out of the first round that was surprising to me anyway so I could see Bailey dropping to six do you think he could drop to six or could he drop further and most importantly do you think the Jazz will pass on him if he’s on the board well there was a lot to unpack there let me just say that start from the very beginning i think it is a good healthy dose of lying season yep um and I think everything you got to you got to take everything with a grain of salt and look at it through different lenses i I think that’s the key and and these organizations are very uh very strong you know financially they they spend money during this process to try to figure that out to try to gain an advantage and certainly no one you know in those offices is calling around shooting the bull with anyone saying this is what we’re going to do um so that stuff’s kept kept really tight and so I think it’s really at that point it becomes now to have a plan ready because the draft itself is done in real time um you know every all these mock draft guys get to study and and you know then conjecture for 30 minutes on the radio why they took their pick but you know in in the draft room that thing comes and goes pretty quickly so um you’re also responding to what other teams are doing so there’s always that take too um with the Ace Bailey stuff you know I I with my own eyes you know the things I see really intrigue me um you know certainly what I’m hearing through the the game of Liars Poker there’s there’s things that are concerning but at the same time you have to take all that knowing that you know games are being played and and there have been a lot of guys that have slid um you know that that have have outperformed their slide and so that that’s been done before in history so it’s just a matter of trying to make the right decision for you um I would say this I think the Jazz are in a spot to get a really good player you know I’ve spent a lot of time over the last couple weeks watching um and I think at the very least two guys that I think are really good rotational type guys in the NBA that could with a little bit of development could become more you know I think are sitting right there with Conanipple and Trey Johnson um but when you look at like star power and star value and you you scrub your brain of all that other stuff you know I think there’s a chance that Ace Bailey slides and is an all-star um his shot making is unbelievable and the stuff that he’s kind of nicked on is stuff that you know culturally you can address and having veterans around i mean that’s the whole thing of the NBA and so um you know I think from a talent standpoint I think he if he’s sitting there that’s another option and we’ll get into you know what the Jazz would do in a minute because I don’t necessarily know but you know I’ll play the game of liars poker too uh the other guy that you know intrigues the literal hell out of me is Jeremiah Fierce um he’s a G name that’s not being talked about a lot but when I watch his tape um he’s he’s he’s another guy I think in that range that has all-star potential um so th those kind of my thoughts and then you can react i have multiple reactions that was excellent you talked all around the name and did not mention VJ Edge i think he’s gonna be gone excellent point i think he’s high higher regarded and also totally agree he’s one of those dudes he’s one of those dudes DJ that another team covets and Philly’s willing to move or whatever and they they slide in to get him so I just think there’s there’s too much buzz about him one through i just I just think he’s gone 100% agree with you i think he’s gone too i I don’t think he’s last until five i get why Jazz fans have talked him up i’ve seen a lot of stuff on social media from a lot of Jazz fans who are out there watching the tape and because he played in the Big 12 they actually you know watched his games i mean he was projected to be in this range all along and they love him and I think yeah for all the reasons you love him he’s not going to be on the board so we can set that aside we both think he’s gone either Philly takes him Charlotte takes him or somebody trades up to take him but he is more likely gone than on the board so having said all of that I’ve heard that one thing Austin really values and I’ve heard this I haven’t heard it a lot but I believe it from the person who told me this is that he values tough-nosed nasty highly competitive people and he puts Everybody values that everybody says they value that right but he really does in a way that other people don’t so let’s assume first off do you think that’s true and second off which player has that so if it comes down to there’s a lot of players of similar size similar skill set but if he sees a guy with that who’s it going to be well I I think I think that’s you know a true statement in some respects but at the same time you know every single person in basketball you know the one thing you can’t see enough of is talent you know you cannot see enough of a guy shooting the ball in the hoop and and you will find ways to coax yourself into siding with the guy that makes more shots um I remember and this is a funny story i used to you know recruit for a living for right for BYU and you know it was one of my main jobs so I was out playing somewhere or playing i was out watching a guy somewhere and then you know the the process was he plays good you line up an opportunity for coach to come see him and you make that journey out there together and you know it’s almost like Lion King you you hold up the recruit in front of coach to see if he’ll bless it and um it wasn’t quite that dramatic but you know just adding color but we went out and the dude did not make a shot i don’t think I think he hadn’t made probably the worst night of his life and you know coach was not a guy during that would say anything just kind of watched it all talked to the kid after we’re walking out to the car afterwards and he said “Hey just make a note of this it’s uh” and he said it just this way it it’s probably more important for a guy to make shots when I’m in the building uh you know if he he can’t shoot when I’m in the building we probably shouldn’t recruit him um because he’s you know I’m going to be on the sideline a lot when he’s playing so he kind of just gave me a little dig but I guess my point long-winded is you will find a lot of reasons to like a guy who can really play um and but toughness and hard nose that’s certainly a part of it you go back to can that be again can that be taught culturally can that be taught the way that things are taught in jobs you know on the job like no you know dude that’s Rook that’s not going to work you know you got to do this and so you’re hoping for some of that so if you can draft it all in one piece yeah go get it it’s called Cooper Flag but outside of that I think I think you have to find you know you have to find other options you have to find things that stand out and to me it’s like what’s the ceiling what’s the star power um and that’s why I I mentioned those two names i think Fierce Fears just watching him play and knowing how the NBA’s played he he’s unbelievably good in ball screen but where he’s great when a big switch is on to him it’s night night i mean it is you know a hesy a crossover a step back um but he’s he’s making his decision and that big is is a step behind him almost every time um you know there’s a couple SEC teams as you go through this process you know call around and talk to people um I have a couple connections of the SEC believe it or not um and was talking with a couple of guys out that way and and you know I mean it’s just people that know no and and that’s what they said about fears is you know we dedicate our whole game plan to him and you know we do this and we do that and he was beating our doubles and he was splitting them and he was exposing our bigs and he was constantly in our guts and that’s what I see in his film um that really makes me go that you know and then and then the intangible stuff the other stuff his leadership i you know he’s a gregarious kid you know that engages off the floor and on the floor he’s very vocal so those are just you know little tidbits I see on the tape as I watch okay that was an awesome drop yacht can you cut that he is constantly in our big flag no he was constantly in our guts oh man well that’s what you you know that’s what you feel like you’re getting I mean your whole your whole aim in basketball is to keep people out of your yard because you know you you get beat you get bit a study diet of layups and dunks will get you beat yep or or you know then you then you give way too much to dunks and everything and then the three ball starts i mean go watch some of our St mary’s film um back in the day i mean it’s what they did to you uh so if you can get somebody can do that and the one thing the Jazz have I think they got a guy who can really push tempo and call you um in the half court certainly can beat a guy um but not a guy who’s really going to get guys leaning he’s a straight line guy i feel like Keont is more of a straight line guy so I think that’s why this kid kind of stands out to me so I guess my biggest point is with the with those four guys sitting there and the way the draft jostles it’s going to be interesting but my point is the Jazz are set to get a I think they’re set to get a really good player which you would expect at five is Malage who apparently is showing well in workouts obviously we don’t get to see that but he’s showing skill that he didn’t get to use at Duke can’t blame the Duke coaching staff if they said go to the front of the rim catch the alleyoop and dunk it uh but apparently he can do more than that and he’s showing good mobility is there any chance he comes flying up uh we had Brian Gueltzer on and he’s like the the craziest but smartest thing that a team like the Jazz could do is draft Malach and trade Kesler and you’d have a young big on a rookie contract who’s going to be really good and Kesler’s good and you can get real value for him does that strike you as the craziest thing you’ve ever heard or you think bold but solid let’s do it no I mean I actually you know you go down those roads in your head and I thought that through but I think the the disconnect there is you can’t just assume that that you know right as that Malawak comes into the league he’s going to be able to lead the NBA in contested defensive rebound percentage which Walker Kesler was nowhere near his first year you know so like there there is a everybody wants to like drive through and order yes I’d like an all-star with a side of uh salad and yeah can you make that cocoa large you just don’t do it that way right there’s there’s process involved and these guys actually have to get into the league feel it understand it um you know get written off as busts in year one and then have to come back and face the music and then you know so what I’m saying is I think Walker Kesler’s to me that’s not a piece that I would be just throwing around you know because I think that dude that dude’s got some real things to him um now the but but the idea of it you know the idea if you’re just plugging tall guy for tall guy you could see that um but I think there’s a little more to that one well I could talk basketball with you for a while but the fact is you probably need to go work on that Paul McCartney cover yeah you got any requests for me that I could work on for you send you a little I’m just curious if you would go Beatles or Wings i mean for if it’s me I would say you should go Beatles uh not that you know he didn’t have some hits with wings because he did but I’ i’d go Beatles all right i I’ll do I’ve got Come Together down i’ll just I’ll go down maybe I’ll put a hat on because my hair doesn’t look so good right now it’s fresh out of the sack okay well thanks for that it was a late night watching DJ so and a late you know I don’t have to be to work i don’t check in to start taking customers till about 11 i’m just kidding i’m just kidding okay Jim thanks a lot we’ll talk to you again next week all right man see you dj and PK it’s 975 the zone when we come back everything you missed in this show we’ll get you up to speed next stay with us this is Jake Scott and Ben Anderson athletics are funny that way i’ve I’ve always said this not only does it attract people from all sorts of different backgrounds but all sorts of different intelligence levels different emotionally intelligence levels like all those things like I don’t know how coaches do it honestly this is going to sound mean because it’s certainly not the case there are legitimate savants can think everything with the game and then aren’t super intelligent off the floor and struggle off the floor and that’s quite common it’s so applicable though to life i mean Elton John just sat down and played the piano i think in person you can really tell the difference between not intelligent and maybe just public speaking isn’t my first way of communicating but then you can see people is just like “Okay this dude’s just a dim bulb.” And as a dim bold myself I feel like we can really sniff out each other you know what I mean spider sense tingles get around each other this guy’s faking it just like me here Jake Scott and Ben Anderson every day from 10 to noon on 975 KSL Sports Zone 9 a.m slacker radio headlines brought to you by Trajan Wealth call Trajan Wealth today your local trusted financial fiduciary 801899-7600 or visit their website at trajewealth.com i could hear Tim singing this he could do Sergeant Pepper tim Lome jazz analyst media just joined us i think he’s smart and do you know why we think people are smart this is why I think someone is smart but I think it’s also why Yak thinks someone is smart and I think it’s just a default for all of you listening we have an opinion we ask someone a question trying to get the uh you know confirmation biases built in thinking okay they’re going to agree with me and it’s going to show me how smart I am or in the case of PK they’ll disagree with me and then we’ll get to have an argument and that’s fun those are the two ways to go right the person agrees with us then we find out we agree on stuff and you walk away thinking that person’s really smart they really know how the world works because they agree with your opinion you might both be up in the night but that doesn’t matter i walk away thinking that person’s really smart perhaps we’re both wrong and neither one of us are going to pick the Mavericks in any of the four series in the year they win the championship nice one of the biggest sports bets like I don’t bet a lot but I had a friendly wager with a good friend on that so that was the Heat uh Maverick series in 2011 i lost big time you thought that you were going to win the big What did you So did you lose you lose money you lose your lunch money here you had to do something embarrassing you shaved your head that one was about That was embarrassment you wore Utah State gear all day long what’ you do no I had to wear a Seattle Seahawks hat at one point when the when the Niners lost to the Seahawks and the NFC Chiefs it is weird that you root for the Seattle Mariners and the 49ers hey I’m born in Utah i I’m a sports free agent over over here yeah okay that’s true there’s no no NFL or uh MLB team in your backyard i’m just saying that yeah it’s confusing as someone who grew up in California i just have to say “Oh trust me man people ask all the time ask me why you don’t root for the Seahawks i don’t like the Seahawks like the Niners i don’t know what to tell you.” Yeah well I get you front you were front runner on the Niners but that’s okay i mean you are a free agent and they won and they had a player from BYU was the MVP and so Jerry Rice was really Yeah right exactly this whole list but then the Mariners well you didn’t front run on the Mariners i got to give it to you there you want to know why the Mariners yeah griffy ken Griffy Jr i figured it was Junior i grew up in the 90s and he was the dude i I went home um because I you grown and gone i don’t even know why I was there whatever a Alex Rodriguez’s rookie year was it would have been 90 96 probably about there and I don’t know why I was there and I don’t think my wife was on the trip we would have been living in Utah at that point so but I remember saying to my dad “Dad we got the Mariners in town we got to go see We got to go see A-Rod we got to see A-Rod.” I mean they got Griffy they got A-Rod inner League play was relatively new at that point debuted 94 actually okay so it was 94 then yeah i’d been married three years at that point so yeah i don’t know where my wife was it was just my dad and I at the game my brothers weren’t there my wife wasn’t there it was just dad and I remember that he was a huge baseball guy yeah it took about three seconds you think we ought to do that yeah father son bonding time i will selflessly go to a major league baseball game and watch A-Rod and Ken Griffy Jr yeah good call so the reason to get to why I think Tim is so smart and what we agree on is VJ Edgecomb gone when the Jazz drafted five and I I know for a lot of you he’s the guy well if he’s going to be the Jazz guy they’re going to have to trade up and Austin A didn’t rule it out but he also made it clear that that seemed unlikely and I get that i mean people don’t usually trade up from five to three or four i suppose you can try to trade up for two but if you trade up to two you’re not going for BJ HCO you’re going for Dylan Harper be interesting to see if that’s how it really plays out because at the time of the draft oh this is the order and then later on it’s like why didn’t somebody see this player or that player why did Jordan go three why did Klay Thompson go 11 why did Steph Curry why did Giannis why did Kawawaii blah blah blah blah blah well yeah that that’s the thing about this there will be a player that’s taken later in this draft at some point the years down the line we’re all going to revisionist history okay i think the one thing I won’t revision his history on is what both Tim and Walker Mel from uh Charlotte who joined us early in the show and all of these interviews are available wherever you get your interviews uh you can go to our website you can go to YouTube you can go to Apple you can go to Spotify you can blah blah blah blah whatever you do we can’t tell you what to do we can’t quote unquote retrain the audience got to meet the audience where they are and the audience isn’t moving for you if anybody in broadcasting radio or TV has learned anything or anywhere in the digital universe podcast whatever has learned anything be everywhere because the audience probably isn’t going to come find you that’s a that’s a hard deal to get done in real numbers so Walker Mail and Tim Lome are both of the opinion that uh VJ Edgecom is gone before the Jazz draft at five and Walker thinks yes he’s heard all the trade rumors but he thinks when push comes to shove the Hornets probably don’t trade it’s more likely that they stay where they are than they move all All of that goes against the background of nobody really knows what the Wizards are doing and Charlotte’s new ownership new management team they don’t really have a track record to know how they think so there’s a little bit of a wild card built into that i think the most interesting trade and I don’t think they’ll do it but I think the most interesting trade would be if San Antonio traded out of two and I think they’ll draft it too i think and Dylan Harper may not turn out to be the second best player in the draft but right now everybody thinks that if they do trade whoever trades in there I think it’s taking Dylan Harper he’s going to go too and I think to San Antonio i don’t think the trade will happen but I think it’d be super interesting i think people really want him i think if the Spurs want to bring in a veteran because pups don’t raise pups and all that kind of stuff and they want to bring a veteran in with their young guys which they did with Fox but not a veteran who’d won a lot phoenix is looking to move off Kevin Durant and the San Antonio Spurs are one of the preferred destinations there are certain rules that I learned because I watched the NBA for a long time don’t trade old talent for young talent i’m with you that is always That’s not a red flag going up that’s fireworks on the Fourth of July kevin Durant wanted a high level for a for a long time like you talk about like there’s a 20-year age gap no but what you’re talking about here could that be the play that gets him to San Antonio if the Suns can talk the Spurs into that which I do not believe they can i don’t think so but if the Suns can talk the Spurs into it the Suns should absolutely do it absolutely 100% the Suns should do or you can go to the number two pick and get Dylan Harper and reset absolutely i know the Suns are crazy but even I I believe even they have had enough common sense to say “Hey we got KD uh do you like him?” “Yeah.” And then the Spurs say “What do you like?” You like the number two picked to which the answer is “No.” Uh Byron Scott for Norm Nixon now Norm Nixon was a good basketball player let’s not put any anything on no but he was 10 years older and he tore his Achilles playing softball in Central Park I think a couple years later or wrecked his knee one or the other it was a bad injury and Byron Scott was good for a decade old talent for young talent red flag going up now fireworks not KD for number two no but I think it would be interesting if they did that i think it’s more likely that they bring in Harper and then they either trade Fox for somebody else uh but it’s tough to trade smaller players for bigger players you have to be careful of that there’s so few bigger players that you know and Fox is a little on the smaller side so this is a league that is built on length and athleticism yeah there’s a LeBron quote out there that I’ve heard national shows arguing about where he says this whole ring thing and and dumping all these guys who don’t have rings but they were great players you know Steve Nash on down the line right we’d put Stockton and Malone i say Stockton Malone but most of the name well he went with 21st century names and they’re basically 20th century i mean LeBron’s age and all uh but then the argument was made well it’s self- serving because he just doesn’t want the guy with zero rings compared to one or two because he doesn’t want to lose the argument with Jordan four to six right so it’s kind it’s kind of self- serving but the fact is when LeBron was listing all the guys who are really good players who aren’t getting any love and they have no rings there were a bunch of guys who are 6’2 6’3 it’s Steph Curry’s the outlier he’s the under 66 guy who figured out how to be the best player on a championship team without the size and he is the exception to the rule and those guys come along once every one or two generations isaiah Thomas and phenomenal talent around both those guys but it’s just so rare it is so rare but one byama can be the guy and they can bring in Harper and he does seem to be all that if you can get your hands on him great i just don’t see how anyone does so I thought that about what Tim said and Tim goes through a lot of the other guys and I think the one outlier to your point Yach revisionist history no revisionist history on all the guys who are in this 63 to 67 range but Malich is out there 712 now that guy where should he go if he goes eight it’s going to be Why didn’t he go one two three right well if he becomes the elite big yeah right but is he going to be Stephen Adams who’s a good big he’s a good big but he’s not an elite big sure yeah stephen Adams has been in the league we’re 10 plus years and he’s helped the teams he’s on not just hanging on that guy moves the needle he doesn’t move the needle to the championship level but he’s a really good role player but I do think that people right now are confused as far as uh Trey right or VJ or um Fears jeremiah Fears yeah yeah you gota put Jeremiah Fears in that group and I’m leaving somebody out oh Caniple those four guys beaut’s in the eye of the beholder nobody’s really sure they’re in a tear they’re in a group none of those guys are falling to nine or 10 right there’s four those four guys Bailey and Malish those six are going to go between three and eight it looks like yeah and that’s to your point it’s all dependent on what you as a franchise are looking for and in a really honest moment they might say “Not really sure.” Well sure but the guy with the bulldog the guy with the chip on his shoulder the guy with the motivation after we give him all the money and all the fame how hard is he going to work to get better and to be adding something to your game at the age of 24 at the age of 25 at the age of 26 not thinking I’ve arrived well and that’s the interesting part say look at Jeremiah Fierce for example because we all know the story about Cooper Flag and how he reclassified into this draft class jeremiah Fears did the exact same thing and that’s and you see in the writeups he’s 18 and what Tim pointed out is he has people in the SEC who said their entire game plan was built around stopping this kid and he still beat it there’s a lot to be said for that and how much better can he get so as a year younger and I think that matters yeah i don’t like the fact that they’re telling 18-year-olds they can’t go to work i mean this is America they’re done with high school it’s time to go to work before high school we’re getting into child labor laws okay the last couple years after you’re 16 or whatever but like when you’re 18 and they say you can’t work and I still don’t get why it’s okay for a bunch of 20somes to collectively bargain away somebody else’s rights for the life of me I don’t get how that works i got no legal background i wasn’t pre-law on Friday nights at UC Santa Barbara in retrospect maybe that was a brilliant game plan that I should have thought of but 17-year-old 18-year-old me didn’t figure that out should have been pre-law what was I thinking but I do not get how they negotiate away that guy’s rights it makes zero sense to me having said that I do get how valuable it is to the NBA to see these guys who are who’ve only played up against talent that’s one year older than them if that and they go to college and they have to play up three or four years because when you get to the pros you have to play up 10 years and that’s a thing and how do you beat these guys who are 5 10 12 years 15 years older than you and all this experience and beat grown men so get a little taste of that in college playing against the older guys that that’s a that’s a real thing and you ought to remember it from when you were on the playground or whatever sport you played as a youth how hard it was to play up a year or two it was tough why is that kid winning you’re in some pickup even just at a pickup level some pickup game he’s he’s a year or two older and he’s bigger and he’s stronger yeah hard to beat that guy we also talked with Cole Bagley this morning utah Mammoth NHL insider for the zone it’s on as Cole said “My off season is over the draft is a week from Friday and a week from Saturday.” He acknowledges the trade speculation out there but doesn’t really believe it’s going to happen i’m with him i don’t think they’re going to trade that pick it’s a rare opportunity to pick top five you get a young guy you get to add to a young core i’m not sure and it may come down to what move is there and it’s all shades of gray but they basically have a core of guys who are 21 and a core of guys who are 27 and given a choice I think they’re going to add to the younger core now if there’s a free agent out there who makes a lot of sense who’s 26 27 20 29 years old yeah they probably do that but I think it makes more sense to add to that young core because they think they’ve got some other young guys who aren’t there yet but are about to be and obviously they got the two guys they brought over from Russia and I don’t think I can say boot denil denil boot boot i don’t think I can say that some people say it’s it’s denil boat but no don’t take that joy away from me i heard that earlier this week so I but to your point they got to find the right age and yeah you can’t get a hold of the 23 24 year old they’re under contract okay but and they signed long contracts in the NHL boy the NBA moved away from this a long time ago those seven-year deals like Kolinko signed in the early 2000s kolinko is a big reason why that got I know and they’re no good and they don’t live up to them we have to keep these guys to shorter and what happened is they empowered the players players are like five and then like give me an opt out at three okay so I’ve got two named options now give me an opt out at two they just they want they all want option years they want opt out correct and so there’s two names that have been thrown out there as maybe the two biggest free agents in terms of players that the biggest free agents or biggest ones that the Mammoth would be in line for mammoth would be in line for who you talking Mitch Mner Sam Bennett the problem to your point DJ guess what both of their ages are uh Bennett is 29 right he’ll be 28 turning 29 soon marner 28 as well but next seasons is his 29year-old playoff he’ll be 29 in the past year right so that to your point but isn’t Bennett gonna get reuped he’s not really going to hit the market is he they’re But you said the Florida Panthers themselves they already know that they’re being priced out of three of their potential top they’re going to keep I don’t think they’re gonna lose all three i mean they got three guys on the market they may prioritize Bennett as the guy that they want to retain i think I mean Marian’s 37 yeah Marshian may take a he’ll take the most money and get one last NHL payday and that’s a good point because here’s the thing marian if you know his history he did not break out until I think he was after his 30 he was in his 30s before he really came how long a deal will someone give him cuz I’m ruling him out for the mammoth i don’t really know Bill Armstrong and his pattern i mean everything’s so new right marshand is not a Utah Mammoth except edition championship experience all that and a lot of money for a year or two yeah i think then you get all the money back as opposed to because the worst case scenario is the one that Cole Bagley pointed out you get somebody who’s 29 but you got to give them seven years and now you’re paying them a gazillion dollars and they’re eating up a huge chunk of your cap and they’re 34 35 36 and they’re just not there anymore that’s what Sam want with Mar if you just gave him a year or two and maybe he doesn’t want that maybe he’s gonna find someone who gives him three and hey Corey Perry’s looking over at Marshian saying “Hey I’m 40 and I’m still doing it.” So I mean really dismiss March he’s 37 but I’m just making the argument here that if you had him for a year or two and you knew he was going to play at a high level he and he could be a bridge player i get Yeah I get what you’re saying championship DNA hold guys accountable and and like this is how you do it everyone else is trying to figure out how to do it he walks in he’s now won Stanley Cups with two different clubs this is how it’s done he set NHL records for and but but like everything all the attitude stuff PK talks about we just got beat 61 in fill in the blank city wherever right Edmonton right this is how you get up the next day and you you go train and you get on a bus and you go to the airport and this is the attitude and this is mentality shoulders up let’s go quit your soul you know you could use that absolutely if it were just for a year or two I would get that does he want to come west if he signs a four-year deal i’m horrified yeah if you’re But he’s not going to bill Armstrong’s not going to do that so that’s all does he want to come west that’s the big question oh I don’t know i don’t know all that i don’t know i mean it’s been hard enough to learn I mean total honesty it’s been hard enough to learn the mammoth and follow everything we’re supposed to follow and to think that I’ve been following the whole NHL there aren’t enough hours in the day i’m just going to raise my hand and plead guilty and say “Somebody help me out we got to figure this out.” It’s It’s like hard enough to watch the NBA’s Eastern Conference i mean all these leagues have gotten so big don’t they feel like two leagues i mean baseball literally is the only thing is the NFL because they only play once a week there’s actually time to watch all the Yeah but when everybody else is playing three or four times a week correct yeah stand up with it if if it’s baseball and playing six times a week how do you follow and watch all of this you try to skim along and pick up but there’s not enough hours in the day there’s too much going on deal with it all right DJPK it’s 975 the zone your feedback next stay with us and it’s all over almost here don’t go nowhere dj PK it’s time for your feedback occasionally we get delayed feedback some of you people it turns out aren’t on social media all during the show giving us precisely what we need to make the show better that’s okay i respect you for it you have lives if you wander into it every you know 12 18 24 36 hours whatever and put down something funny that’s that’s good enough and Tyler Tucker was a little late to the party yesterday we were talking about why would fivestar quarterback recruit Ryder Lions choose BYU and Tyler long after the show was over probably because you know he had something important to do he said “Late night rancheritos festivities.” Okay I tweeted back “You’re dating yourself with ranchertos comments those require a certain level of maturity and I gave him the gift of the old guy with the gray beard i’m in my prime zack Stout would like a word tyler said “As someone who just turned 40 I’m cool with that.” All right way to go Tyler nice a little late to the party but uh you brought your agame when you showed up good work uh Brand is just going to post this every day and why are you not talking about the Utah Warriors rugby Utah’s only pro sports team of the postseason and one game away from the national championship final didn’t we get that yesterday pk said because his job now when I go out and make what’s the what’s the expression I used in the manifesto that PK always quotes a conscious decision you made a conscious decision yes yeah it’s it’s it’s literally what we do you decide are you going to cover this or not are you going to lead with this or not you show up there’s 20,000 people there for whatever reason 10,000 people is about my cutoff that’s about it if you can’t get 10,000 people there uh how are we going to get an audience and if we don’t get an audience you know what happens because I do it’s happened um could you go to the general manager’s office and uh bring your security card with you that’s what happens so I’m going to make another conscious decision you younger people may not remember this but there used to be a sports caster in town named Bill Marraftoft and Bill was near the end of his career when PK and I showed up bill was great to both of us one of the great tragedies and there are many but one of the great tragedies of COVID was that that’s when Bill passed away and I believe he was 89 he might have been 88 but he was in his late 80s i think he was 89 and uh that was when we weren’t doing uh church services in person and we weren’t doing weddings and funerals and we weren’t putting a lot of people in a room all at once and letting them breathe on each other and he never had that memorial service and I think a ton of people would have showed up ton of people love Bill and he was good to a ton of people and he was certainly good to me and I know PK had say the same thing if he weren’t on vacation today and Bill once upon a time told the then young Greg Marsden the gymnastics coach at the U when Greg you ought to come cover us no it’s not my job to promote your program draw 5,000 people and then and then I’ll come and Greg called back and said we’re drawing 5,000 people and Bill went over to camera started doing stories ended up traveling to NCA championships profiling Olympians all kinds of stuff and we all know the program blew up and became really popular you know but there’s a certain amount of you got to get to a certain threshold because if you don’t have enough listeners you don’t have enough viewers you don’t have enough clicks uh you will get let go yuck when’s the last time you heard anyone talk about layoffs and your blood ran a little cold uh couple months back right it’s like a real thing that happens oh it doesn’t happen to you well yeah because I make decisions like this but outgrow that stadium pump that attendance up and winning certainly helps with that and everybody will be out there uh Lamar Jackson dropped a line that made me made me uh made me laugh he was talking about he was asked if he was over the playoff loss to the Bills and he says “I don’t think I get over any losses to be honest i got losses from youth football that still haunt me.” All right I like that so we started recounting some L’s from high school and we threw it out there devin says “Senior year in high school varsity soccer we lost to South Umqua on our home field and we missed out on the state playoffs it freaking sucks.” We hated South Umqua nice Devin that’s high school sports in a nutshell right there ryan yeah I got thrown out at home in the championship game i misread my coach’s signal i was in second grade second grader ran through the stop sign i’ve never understood that those should be going home is the windmill pointing at the bag is stop how do you mess those up i never understood that i mean if you run through it on purpose yeah I get that you’re hard-headed and you think you’re faster than you are sure David i took a lot of L’s with girls in my youth do those count that said you really only want you to win to win one championship so it’s really not the same see the L’s don’t matter he’s uh he’s happily married years later the L’s no longer matter nice got a couple other people uh weighing in here uh on the night games we talked about this morning cougars are getting multiple late games i like them all colani Sitakei was quoted in the Desireette News just get me a Coke and a Cougar Tale and I’ll be just fine how about you and Kevin said “I’m okay with the night games because there’s fewer conflicts.” I think that that uh speaks to a lot of people um we got we got people the Aggies only have one game after 8:30 we got another guy the Aggies have one game at 7:45 but it’s Air Force so that’ll be over at a reasonable hour see Bronco would disagree with that bronco’s not planning on letting Air Force have the ball and run the clock and shorten the game had a little more respect for Bronco huh all right Jake is back he’s got vacation stories jake and Ben are coming up next stay with us
