Lakers sold for $10 Billion, Luka Doncic looking forward to win ‘championships’ | FIRST THINGS FIRST
you know Lakers are an amazing organization i’m looking forward to meeting Mark and excited about the future also grateful to Genie and the Bus family for welcome me welcoming me to LA and I’m happy that Genie will continue to be involved i look forward to working with both of them to win championships exclamation point ring culture right right uh listen I I think this is great great great for the Lakers and it is this is not I think Jeanie Bus was a fine owner i don’t think she was terrible i don’t think she was one of the best she does seem to be I had very little uh interaction with her but the little I had was always pleasant and it seems like people have been around her a lot she’s a really nice person correct speaks to especially and it seems like the bar for being a nice person amongst owners is pretty low they’re like but she clears it for regular that’s right for sure and so but I they were operating at a massive financial deficit compared to the other power players of the league and they still spent on players i think over the last decade they’re like seventh most in luxury tax i know some Laker fans might be like “Well we’re the second biggest market in the biggest brand we should be the most.” But of the three teams that have spent the most only one’s gotten their money’s worth the Warriors have but the Clippers and the Suns have not and so you know so that but it’s been the other things they are cheap on staffing they don’t have a shooting coach they their scouting department is threadbear to a degree they have a lot of people doing multiple jobs they don’t have a GM and a president of basketball ops they have a GM who is president of basketball ops they in my opinion lowballed Tailoo with unnecessarily you know years ago I think in Tai’s opinion as well and when it is a and you were relying on a lot of literal friends and family Jeanie siblings the Rambamis family Ramb yeah Kurt and Linda and so it not going to be the Dodgers there’s no salary cap in baseball you can just outspend and buy players but that’s not all they did they hired Andrew Freriedman They got they had cut you know absolutely cutting edge scouting and analytics and all of it and financially they’re right have a lot of unconventional contracts right which by the way you can’t do that in the NBA so that part won’t be there but Brew the Lakers have been having this huge edge of being the Lakers being LA all of that and then this downside of but they’re kind of cheap on some things and now they could have all the edges of going with the Lakers and all the wealth so that’s it’s just a huge huge moment for their fans for all their success it is surprising how much of a mom and pop operation they were they really were i mean when they’re the greatest basketball franchise yes I know Boston you know with the rings but obviously most of that was in the 60s with Bill Russell the Lakers are the glamour franchise of the NBA and they have been run like a mom and pop operation now Jerry Bus when he was the owner was obviously very aggressive you had Jerry West so that’s how they you know they got Magic they they had Kareem before Bus took over then they got Shaq you know as a free agent west got him traded for Kobe so they made some smart moves but it was a different time then right you didn’t have the technology and everything you have the analytics today since everything has changed in the league they have been at a severe disadvantage because of the lack of money that their ownership group tends to have this is phenomenal news phenomenal news they’ve just been relying on hey we’re LA we’re the Lakers so people want to come here like LeBron yeah now they’re actually going to be have more than that to offer as Nick said and this guy Mark Walter since he took over when he took over the Dodgers in 2012 they had not been to a World Series let alone won one they had not been to one in 24 years they had missed the playoffs several it was 1988 that was their last time they’ve been there they won it but that was the last time they had even gotten there and then now since he’s taken over they’ve won the division 11 times they’ve been to the playoffs every single year they’ve been to four World Series and won two of them all right this guy is going to put the I mean look at their roster yeah mookie Betts Freddy Freeman obviously show like he’s will and even before that they went after guy Andre Eer like they went after big names stars that made sense and what I like he’s kind of like it’s he’s the anti-Jerry Jones he’s not seen a lot that’s right he’s not he hires baseball people in this case but he’ll hire basketball people and maybe they already are there he’ll give Pelink and those guys a chance he’ll let them do their job i hire basketball experts they do the job and I’ll sit back i won’t be all in the news and and you know getting involved and stuff and that’s those are the best owners so I even also in their 12 years he’s on the team eight times they’ve been above the luxury tax in baseball seven times they’ve had the highest payroll in the league so can you imagine the Lakers being willing to go above a good example is they would have kept Caruso like that’s the in this right that and that in this you know since LeBron’s been there they have had they’ve obviously had misses and mistakes not many have been out of not spending money like the Russell Westbrook was a mistake but that wasn’t like a cheap option that was just a mistake caruso was flatly a financial you know decision and it was also a scouting mistake in I guess we can’t keep THT and Caruso so they kept THT um and so I that I do think that you mentioned Jerry Jones that was my other takeaway from this to be totally honest before we get to other Lakers stuff later in the show is I just wonder how this news landed at the desk of every single NFL owner it’s like oh you mean the amount yeah oh we’re talking Wait hold on a second the Los Angeles Lakers are worth $10 billion without owning their arena what are the Dallas Cowboys worth 15 definitely are probably are you and so like maybe more i don’t know like the Lakers are worth the Lakers are worth 10 they’re worth then and so and then what are that’s the Cowboys but team that’s not the the like what are the the NFL what are the ners worth the ners are the ners more valuable than the Lakers because the just sold for under six like Celtics got over the commanders yeah but I think that was a I think and the and the Broncos just sold for 4.6 a few years ago but I think this resets it um can I go back to to to uh the change in ownership it feels like it’s hard to find someone that says this isn’t going to work so it feels like a unanimous landslide of home run so I’m like whenever I see that I’m like I just don’t buy that necessarily do you think there’s any downside and I’ll give you an example like here’s a quote this is a good move from Bon Tempson and McMenan’s article this is a good move one league source said the Lakers can finally be run like a real business i’m like okay yeah that sounds great like all the other programs at the same time part of the Lakers success I think comes from a tight-knit Lakers family it comes from the fact that Kobe got a thank you contract at the end of his time but that did that wasn’t I mean those weren’t the great years came before so that’s the thing that’s KW i don’t mean to interrupt you i don’t I I know people have always said like yeah you know that’s why and I do think it’s important to treat your people right and not kick him out the door and not have a situation like the Lions had for years with Calvin Johnson where like your star icon hates you i get that but was that Kobe contract like what’s the net positive of that and people can be like well that’s why LeBron sign no it’s not lebron LeBron’s decision to go to the Lakers I don’t believe was because they treated Kobe he wanted to come to LA and also most I think most franchise would have done that for Kobe i really believe that sure like a dirk a derk thing i think there’s it’s hard here’s what I think the challenge of this story is the Lakers passionate fan base runs so hot and so deep i don’t know if you can put an analytic on it but I’m not willing to dismiss the fact that it was a small tightlyknit organization i agree with that i think the tangible benefits probably outweigh it and I think we’re going to hit a million in the next segment holy moly not during the Somebody somebody we do we have any time to celebrate this is crumble cookies kw i know we’re not supposed to advertise and now can we get some of those that’s not her job thanks for watching subscribe here to get more from the show and to check out clips from Lakers drafted bronny for lebron and nick doesnt appreciate that go figure 😂
OMG!!! How is this going to affect Lebron?
Tbh i was a little surprised it was ONLY 10 billi when Boston sold last year for 6. Idk mabey its just cause ive been a laker fan for 30 plus years but comparatively speaking, i wouldve thought the gap would be bigger.
But i guess Boston was comming off a championship and the lakers are comming off another playoff bounce.
Congrats on 1 million FTF!!
Can he please buy my Cowboys!!
LeBron plays 3 more years, book it!
Lakers future just got a lot brighter.
Lil Boston fan hoping this doesn’t help the Lakers 😂😂😂 LETS GOOOOO LAKERS 💪🏼💪🏼💛💜
Great segment from brou
Lecrbaby worried he cannot bully the new owner
Jerry Buss would never sell the Lakers!!
Nick constantly telling someone to "hold on" like he doesn't already speak the most and regularly interrupt Wildes and Brou when it's their turn is really annoying
😂😂😂😂 Mentioning Dodgers… They played the Rays in a championship where they had 80 million higher cap
The internet says Mark has 6.6 billion. So how did he spend 10bil??
This was for sure a deal behind the scenes.worked out for both sides. Mavs make another push to either move or get that casino. Lakers value grow after getting young superstar Luka to then sell.
10 Billion for the lakers is kinda crazy, ngl.
Here we go again Luka will be traded again
😂 they're selling because there is no future in the NBA like baseball they will sell nostalgia
Get pelinka outta here and acquire a real GM
I can't wait to see the look on lebums face when he finds out he has no say or pull in the lakers operations now 😂😂😂😂💪💪💪💪
G'day from Australia, Congratulations FTF!!! Now as far as the value of 'other' franchises, I do not agree with Nick I'm afraid… The reason that the Lakers got $10 Billion is not because of their real assets or lack thereof, but largely due to the incredible International brand's 'NAME'; I would hazard to guess that the Lakers are the most popular International Brand even above the much vaunted Cowboys, simply because basketball is played by billions of people across virtually all 194 nations… If they are getting a cut out of 'every' Lakers shirt, short, and sock sold worldwide, then that's where the value is, it it CANNOT be matched by the Mavericks; beyond that, Lakers games would rate much higher in EYEBALLS across all platforms around the world, ensuring a premium for added advertising pull and exposure; in short, the 'EXTRA' $ 4 Billion by comparison with the No2 International Brand, the Celtics; is largely due to the Lakers greater favoritism around the world…
CRUMBL
COOKIES
Can we get some of those?
2:14 Soooo, they can't defer KD's and Giannis 500 Million contracts? LMAO
Once more, here we go. Luka will be traded once more.
I think she was a horrible owner not as bad as mj but close
I just wish the lakers built a drafted good team and stick with it for once but with luka that won't be the case sadly either it seems…
Nick you never had any interactions.
WE HIT A MILLION LETS GOOOOOOOOO
Hopefully they get rid of LeBron and bring some good young Kats
saying you gonna winning championships is pretty damning when you haven done nothing.
4:25 i mean are we really counting 2020
I don't think people realise the appeal of a truly global city like LA. There are only a handful around the world (Tokyo, London, Paris, maybe Beijing, sadly not Hong Kong any more) and two in the US (LA and New York).
In football you can see it with the appeal of the London teams, particularly Chelsea, where people are somehow astonished that top players pick them over Liverpool or the two Manchester clubs.
If you're going to be a multi-millionaire living in a foreign country, would you rather live in a second-rate city, or one of the capitals of the world, with every conceivable luxury or service available to you? (Personally I'd rather live on a private island with a massive library and be left alone by the world, but then I'm not a 20-something, athletic, famous millionaire).
basketball is way more worldwide then American football will ever be so Lakers has values overseas, American football doesn't really have any impact overseas, that's my opinion
these 3 are the best in the business, so glad I don't have to listen to the dribble ESPN keeps sweeping with SAS
Good riddance to Jeanie and her clownshow. She should never have been put in charge and she was holding the organization back.
49ers are worth 15 billion + and every year its going up
Any chance this dude wants to buy the bears ?
Ok, idiots!!! Last time I checked the Celts got 18!!! End of story!!!
Lakers are irrelevant . Clippers run LA .
5:03 “.. all in the videos, all on the record, dancing.”
Watch Luka not resign with lakers and sign with Mavs to win championships lol
Jeanie was a bad owner.
🔥
Anyone else think Luka getting traded to the Lakers is a coincidence? Think about it🤔 And Dallas gets number 1
gawd I hope I was the millionth, been waiting 2 years for this moment
This is Bad she's selling the Lakers, this was her Dad's gift to the Family, they are already rich how much more money could you possibly want. This should've been Buss Family's Business until they possibly switched the Name
This is the worst post ive seen on social media. Like wow a guy signed another guy's arm 3 years ago.
I'm about to back to reading books
Trade luka back to the mavs
i am sure ADAM SILVER got his bag . what a joke !
