what are we talking about today we’re going to be looking at yes I know more Kevin Durant spurs stuff but kind of a twist now it feels like we’re at an impass already right it feels like all right Phoenix is the best it’s going to get take it or leave it you know should the Spurs just really just stop just stop trying to put more assets on the table for the Suns to probably you know say “Yeah okay San Antonio we’ll go with you not Miami or not Houston.” So we’re going to talk about that get some draft news and then play a game of buy or sell you know how that goes our guest has no idea what I’m going to ask him in the final segment let’s go bring him on he is back everybody he is Matt Guzman with Spurs on Sports Illustrated follow him on X and Matt GZAN and he knows better to not ask random questions during a specific event for the San Antonio Spurs matt welcome back buddy thanks for having me back and and you’re right I was was trained by the greatest not to do so hey uh was it weird after you asked that question whoever that guy was defeated like I think I I I was hoping that somebody would so that that would happen because it would open the floor for me to actually ask a good question in contrast i think Harrison would have warmed up but no I mean it was just a little awkward I guess in the moment because he was shut down pretty quickly but everyone just kind of moved on yeah yeah well good on Harrison by the way he kind of answered it a little bit you know he was like you know we don’t we don’t listen to that stuff so uh but anyway you want to go to check out Spurs on Sports Illustrated matt is the big chief out there he has a lot of articles including what happened at a community event for Harrison Barnes and his wife what they did for the Spurs fans or just the community I should say of Austin Texas go on his Instagram or I should say X which is MattGz and mann all right so why is Matt here we’re I guess I know everybody yes I know more KD Spurs stuff i know Matt by the way are you kind of tired of this already it feels like it’s rinser repeat every day isn’t it it it definitely starting to feel that way especially I’ve noticed a trend in the morning it’s the Spurs are not even talking to Suns about Kevin Durant and in the evening it’s Kevin Durant wants to play for the Spurs and in the morning it’s only the Rockets and then the Yeah it just kind of keeps going on and on yeah it keeps going all right well with that being said as I said in the intro Matt it kind of feels like all the parties involved the Sun the Spurs all the other teams that are reportedly in the mix it feels like we’re at an impass now it feels like this is for the Spurs side i said is this is it this is the best offer we’re going to do we don’t know what the specifics are but from what reports say it feels like number 14 Devin Vel once in a while you hear Jeremy Sohan got Kell Johnson’s name pops up and that’s it Phoenix that’s it this the best it’s going to get should the Spurs just stop already just you know just kind of go with the mindset that whatever happens happens now absolutely and the funny part is they kind of have i think from everyone’s understanding you know the Spurs have not put in an all-out bid by any means for Kevin Durant you know they haven’t been keen to include their their prime trade bartering pieces you know number two pick Stefon Castle you know they really haven’t wanted to include something like that for a star you know who’s got one year left on his deal 54 million and he’s expiring you know and there’s no doubt that you know the Spurs would love to you know see what Kevin Durant might be able to do for this team or with this team but at the same time it’s more about whether or not you know they’re willing to include XYZ in trade talks and I think that’s something that is uh is is very important to these talks and conversations yeah and and look I I get it you know you’re Phoenix you want to get the best available uh you know package you can get whether it’s San Antonio Houston or whatever teams involved and I think that’s the course they should go with they should not be you know bending over backwards to a certain degree for Kevin Durant uh you know they still have them technically under contract for one more year sure Kevin thank you for your list of preferred destinations but you know as an organization we got to move forward in the best way available and you know you shot down Minnesota which I thought at least reportedly had the best offer so far for him i mean you’re Phoenix said “I think you should have just pulled the trigger on that and just said pretty much Kawaii Leonard him and send him off somewhere else not where he wants to go you know you you sort it out later on when you’re a free agent officially coming to Rant whether that’s in Minnesota or wherever you do not want to go.” So I think that’s where they’re at right now for Phoenix again I get I get it you’re going to hold off till the last minute to see what team’s going to pony up the best uh bid perfect but for the Spurs I don’t think it’s a win-loss situation i think it’s a win-win situation if you trade for Kevin Durant and you only give up that minimal package that at least is reported great and if you don’t oh no you’re going you might get a Denon Harper in the draft and you keep some young pieces that already know are familiar with Wimi in the system so I think that’s where the Spurs are right now it’s whatever happens happens and I think either how you steer that boat Matt it’s going to be okay the Spurs are going to be all right yeah for sure and you know what you outlined is you know maybe you trade Kevin Durant and you only give up this you know the thing is with with this trade and with the way that these things are with the way that this thing is going you know it’s not maybe you give up you know only this for Kevin Durant it’s if they trade for Kevin Durant they will only give up that you know and so I think to your point it is a very much a win-win situation for the Spurs because if they add Kevin Durant you know they’re they’re not going to look at giving up too much and you know they wouldn’t they’d add Kevin Durant they’d still have the number two pick and they’d still have Stefon Castle you know if you have Deon Vel who’s still you know looking to have that breakout season looking to increase his his productivity and I think that he’s primed to do that on top of adding Dylan Harper on top of keeping around Harrison Barnes Jeremy Sohan you know this is a team that you know there’s nothing there’s not really a wrong way to go about this next season yeah yeah look at these some of the images that just flashed on the screen right now everybody developer is seeing your screen right now you know this is the pieces the Spurs will have to fit around Wimby which I think are great fits they’re going to be fine this team’s going to be good now look of course who does not want to have a basketball hall of famer on the roster spurs fans got a little bit of a taste of that last year with with Chris Paul but all signs are pointing he’s not returning but man you know um I I I think the Spurs should just kind of like leave their best bid on the table for Phoenix and then be you know what okay get back to us when whenever when you were ready to you know tell us whether you’re going to go with us or team A or team B or team C and that’s it because I it look we’re just watching this from afar and reading the reports and it’s exhausting for us imagine the Spurs right now in their camp and you know Kevin Durant and his camp you know and the Phoenix Suns is trying to puck and pull every little piece they can get again I get it i I would do the same thing if I was Phoenix GM but yeah I think we’re at the point now Matt that billing reports come out between now and then whenever it happens and Okay but here’s the question though do you think ultimately let’s just say it’s I’m making this up it’s it’s Houston all right um or whatever team finally agrees to make a deal with Phoenix and Phoenix agrees do you think that trade is going to be underwhelming do you think we’re go back and look and be like “That’s it that’s all it took for KD?” I think Yeah i like what you mentioned going back and looking at it because yeah if you’re looking at this few years in the future you’re going to be like you know what the heck happened why why are the Suns only getting one or two first round picks or one or two players but you know that’s kind of the reality of this situation it’s very interesting you know there are several teams interested and at the same time it seems that Durant’s camp is actively working against the teams that Durant doesn’t want to go to trying to scare them off from a deal because hey he’s not going to sign an extension with you if you trade for him and so you kind of reached this threshold where teams sure are still willing to deal for him on the guys that he’s going to be there for one season maybe they feel like that’s their year to contend and try and win a championship but you know there’s only going to be so much on the table for teams willing to make a deal like that and for the select few teams that are under the influence that are under the impression that Durant will sign an extension you know even then they’re just going to sit pretty and offer a low ball offer because the Suns don’t have to try and force them up they already know Kevin Durant wants to be there yeah exactly yeah there’s no reason for that at least reportedly for either San Antonio or Houston to try to give more because he’s made it known that those are his two of his top picks right ultimately my I think if he’s if he is just a player and his future and how he wants to wrap up his NBA career if that’s the route then h you know I think maybe Houston’s probably the best spot for him because they’re a little bit further along you know their their timeline and he could be the missing piece to push them over the edge the Spurs if he come to San Antonio he’ll come to a damn good team but it’s not title contending already it’s not even with him they’ll still be maybe a couple years away from that happening but we shall see but yeah if you’re like us you know yeah we’re pretty getting tired of all this look at Matt matt pretty much gave me the the record player sample there just says it’s Spurs are involved what is it Matt spurs are involved in the morning or not not involved spurs are not involved in the morning and then in the evening Durant wants to go to the Spurs and then the next morning the Spurs are not involved and then he wants to go yeah that’s how it goes you see it’s rinsey repeat right now but you know we’re tired of talking about this maybe the next time we talk we’ll react to him not coming to San Antonio or going to San Antonio hopefully we’ll see how that pans out he is Matt Guzma with Spurs on Sports Illustrated follow my next at Mad GZ and man when we get back something different I know crazy right we’re going to be looking at some draft news go to cargurus.com go to cargurus.com to make sure your big deal is the best deal that’s g a rgrus.com cargurus.com and we’re back right here on Lock Spurs with Matt Guzman he’s with Spurs on Sports Illustrated follow my next at Matt GZn and um by the way Matt the Phoenix Suns they wanted you in the trade package but the Spurs said “No we’re not going to give up Matt Guzman there’s no way we’re going to do that.” Yeah Matt i’m a non-negotiable i’ I’d love to be uh I’d love to know that so I’m glad to hear yeah exactly why is Matt here we’re talking about Kevin Durant and the Spurs i know we did that in the first segment we kind of got off that pretty quick cuz man we’re we’re both admitted man this this is enough already let’s see where they’re going to go with this but now it’s time to something different that is draft news and I guess the quote unquote biggest news is what we already know and it seems to me no matter what madeup trade deals out there from you know people who think they have sources to legit reporters it seems to me the common thread is the Spurs are not going to give up number two they are hard and fast on that they’re not going to do it is that the is that the right route for this franchise in their rebuild i think so i I I would agree you know and I think it’s funny cuz you uploaded a clip from a couple shows back when we talked about Ace Bailey versus Dylan Harper and number two and I think a lot of people were not happy with the fact that I had considered Ace Bailey and see Dylan Harper you got some push back buddy fact of the matter is you know I think the Spurs have kind of locked in on on taking the best available talent versus somebody who might fit a little bit better because you obviously have Fox and Cassie Blake Wesley already as a point guard and so you know it looks like they like what they’re seeing from Dylan Harper from what we’ve seen looks like he’s worked out with them a couple of times um and I think you know the key factor there is that if they were going to give up number two in Dylan Harper because he seems to be that consensus number two pick um they’re going to want you know a superstar that they would have already wanted to pursue you know for a time that was Giannis Ana Doupo but over time it’s like you know trade talks the Bucks might not even want to deal him so you know I don’t think the Spurs are going to jump out of their chair to give up number two for anybody who’s calling them you know unless it’s somebody they already had on their radar somebody who who makes it easy for them to acquire that player for number two um so I think it is the right the right move i think that they’re holding fast to their assets and and they see a higher upside with taking Dylan Harper over dealing him for number three or dealing him for number eight or for another superstar along with all the other draft capital that it would have taken yeah in other draft news I guess not news more like draft chatter at least among the first Spurs fan bases this you’re looking at the number 14 pick and some Spurs fans even with the number 14 pick they’re saying no don’t use it to draft and stash you’re going to find a number at a player at number 14 bring somebody to maybe draft write the bench maybe send to Austin but not draft and stash in other words no more projects where are you standing with that number 14 pick should the Spurs draft maybe be an asset for down the road draft a stash or bring somebody who could help in more in the short term honestly I I think it’s somebody that they should be able to put on the court from day one maybe not start but somebody who can work into the rotation especially given their lack of center depth which we’ve discussed as well um I think there are several big prospects that have an they have a chance to walk onto the Spurs roster and learn from Victor Wmanyama learn from whoever they pick up in free agency if they grab another big man and I think that’s somebody that they can really use to bolster their back court depth or excuse me their front court depth um right because that’s something that the Spurs have been lacking for quite a quite a while now and so you know I’m of the opinion that that 14 pick can turn into somebody who can help you you know within the next couple of seasons and you know if it’s the right pick turn into something more all right now um this talk about drafting stash popped up because there was a recent report via RG media that the Spurs are looking at French player John Behringer hopefully I’m pronouncing that right as a draft target he’s 611 center he played with Slovenia last year he has 7’4 and half the height 93 standing reach you know the scouts describe this guy with strong shot blocking instincts but he is a project and he is a raw player but if you look at several mock uh draft boards when it comes to the international players he ranks right up there you know he’s not like at the bottom of the barrel at least among international players so he’s I think he’s in the top 10 I believe maybe the top eight uh what do you think about that you know here’s a guy a French guy i know french center here we go again but nevertheless Matt you know that was the report i took that as more of just a Spurs just doing what they got to do look at evaluating talent doesn’t mean they’re going to use 14 for him i think maybe 14’s a little too high for him maybe he could be in the second round but I just took that more as like yeah I hope the Spurs are looking at prospects because especially a guy like this who’s ranked high among international players head into the draft but what did you think about that report that came out regarding Behringer yeah I I I think Behringer is you know you mentioned that standing reach and I think that’s one of those things that really makes a prospect attractive to a lot of teams i think that’s something that that people were just you know over the moon with about Malawak who’s probably going to go in that 6 to 8 N range and and I think you know like you mentioned 14 might be a little high for Behringer but for somebody with that length and you know obviously the French connection that the Spurs have known to to covet and to like um makes him a candidate you know and if he’s available in the second round I wouldn’t be opposed to that same with Maxine Renow you know but you know we talked about him the other day and I think 14 might be high for both of those guys but you know like you said the Spurs are going to be looking at evaluating talent looking at different players that they could take you know and just figure out what works best for them and what kind of what kind of need they want to address you know with November 14 whether they use it or they give it away so I think you know I the report made sense you know but kind of like I think I’m with you 14 might be a little high for him yeah you see look at the picture on the screen right now maxi’s looking at you right now Matt like come on i’m not worth 14 i’m not or look at that he’s like “Come on Matt come on i’m not a 14 pick.” Sorry Maxim you’re not a 14 pick overall but yeah again as we get closer to the NBA draft which just like I think a little over a week from now today’s Friday so it’s it’s it’s wrapping up quick man it’s quick quick quick so we’re going to see what the Spurs do with two picks ultimately Matt um it seems like Harper will be a Spur it just seems like that 14 is kind of in doubt i wouldn’t be surprised if they just traded away you know draft somebody and get some sort of compensation back uh because you know we’ve seen at least recent history of the Spurs do that just look at last year number eight pick got shipped to Minnesota and we just ended up with was it their second round pick which was Harrison Ingram and then Steph Castle so we’ll see if that repeats again coming up next with Matt Guzman of Spurs on sports and he’s gonna play a game buy and sell he has no idea what we’re going to talk about or at least what I’m going to ask him when it comes to your silver and black that’s coming up next right here on with Spurs on Sports Illustrated but on my next Matt GZ man how special is he you know what month were you born on Matt april i was in April you know you know he was born on April 35th that’s how special he is cuz there’s no such number as 35 on the calendar except for Matt matt you are that that that I didn’t know you’re that special you have your own date on the calendar for yourself well April 30th i’m surprised that you came up with 35 kevin Durant really must be on your mind oh you see how I’m mapping it all together or maybe I let the cat out of the bag i’m just kidding everybody i don’t know i don’t know i’m just making that up there all right uh why is Matt here well we’ve been talking about the Kevin Durant first stuff i know boring but we touched on it a little bit and then a little bit of draft news but now the fun begins he’s going to play a game of buy or sell where he has no idea what questions I’m going to ask him so it’s a Friday maybe I’ll take it easy on him today but let’s uh bind my notes here as I get my notes together look at that man getting fancy on lock us first look at that so basic isn’t it it’s just so basic i got to I got to clean that up somebody but will Matt press the blue button and buy will he press that other button you see on your screen where it says sell we’ll find out in just a few seconds all right well certainly back to the Kevin Durant stuff buy or sell Matt Guzman then ultimately Kevin Durant and the Suns will not deal with the Spurs h I’m not going to buy that right now oh hey hey there’s no layway plan here i don’t think I’m willing to to make that purchase today um so you know if the offer is off the table then I guess I’m I’m a no okay because I think I think the Spurs are just sitting pretty waiting to find out you know what happens with the Suns and the other teams that they’re up against but I don’t know that’s a That’s a really tough one that you did not take it easy no no but but but you know I look Kevin Durant picture on the screen there you know and I mean you look at him you’re like man hey he looked good in Black and Silver he’d be good next to Wimby i mean it’s not that his point production was horrible last season he’s showing no signs of slowing down you despite his age well for NBA standards he’s old but for real life standard he’s young so I mean it I get the pros and cons i get why there’s team bring KD you know among the Spurs fan base and I get why there’s well keep them away from the Spurs fan i understand i’m just so torn it’s I’m like 50/50 every day like one day I think sure bring him next day I’m like nah no don’t don’t do that maybe you’re going to you know invest too much of your future in him you know was he going to say two three years so and then I guess the big thing for me Matt is this is that the financials because eventually he’s going to want to have a payday so is Castle so is Wimi so Han is on deck too so just a lot of money for a team that historically has never really gone up beyond the cap space uh mat yeah absolutely and that’s going to be a problem you know for a lot of these young teams that are still building Spurs included you know I think that was one of their biggest worries about going after somebody like Giannis because you bring him in you know all of a sudden you’ve got his contract and he’s going to be paid the most you can the most possible for a player for five or six year extension that’s what Giannis is going to command same with Victor Wemanyama the most he is eligible for he will get and so I think you know when you look at him it definitely it kind of scares you a little bit financially with Kevin Durant it’s not so big of a deal especially if you’re only going to be on the books for two years or or maybe three years you know but at the same time you know that is a that is a concern because in the time that Kevin Durant will be on extension if he were to come to San Antonio you’re going to be due to pay Victor Wemanyama and not to mention you still have to pay Fox likely this summer you know for to extend his contract for a few more seasons and so I think you know there’s always that worry at the same time I think the Spurs aren’t too concerned with it i think that they like the culture they’re building and perhaps some of the players that are you know part of that core would be willing to take you know a pay cut of of some kind to keep that team together and and I think it’s something they’re going to have to deal with over the next couple of seasons but you know Kevin Durant especially will kind of jock up the price of the team in general um but you just hope that you know it doesn’t break the bank for the two three years that he will be in San Antonio now I left the picture up there during your take right now not not because nobody I didn’t want anybody to see you man but could you imagine that guy wearing silver and black next to WBC now that if he was still on the if he was still on the table if Giannis was still on the table Matt oh man I might be telling the Bucks there all right here’s number two i don’t know would you have done it i would i I would leverage number two for Giannis but I think concerns me more is what else they would Milwaukee would would demand you know yeah just look at that thing what could have been what could have been i will say those are some of my favorite games to watch at Frostbank is when the Bucks come to town uh were you there where they the him and Wimi had that epic duel yes yeah that was his birthday his 20th birthday i was there yeah yeah exactly all right well I get out of dreamland for a little bit all right next question here buy or sell that Darren Fox’s time in San Antonio will be shorter versus longer he’s going to hide no he’s buying he’s buying interesting why are you buying Why are you buying that my idea is you know I think they brought in Fox he’s somebody who really wanted to be here he’s definitely going to live out his contract he’s certainly going to get an extension either this summer or you know the next time he’s eligible but at the end of the day you know I think he’s going to exit his prime around the time that another superstar will be available in the free agency market and I think at that point in time Victor Webmanyama is going to be you know probably top five player in the league you know perennial all-star perennial allNBA and I think I guess all I’m saying is that I think at the end of whatever extension Fox is due for there may be another star who’s you know available on the free agent market or on the trade market the Spurs might pursue at which point they’d say hey maybe Fox is going to go and and test the market somewhere else after this extension is over it’s not to say I want him gone it’s not to say that he’s a bad player i think he’s a great fit with the Spurs next to Victor i just think that by the time his his next contract extension is due there may be somebody else on the market or somebody else already in San Antonio via trade that he might prioritize financially yeah yeah i look at the the log jam now with likely Harper and then Castle and then Fox and I’m like man you know if if Harper turns out to what we think he’ll be and if Castle’s star keeps on rising you know he Fox might be the odd odd man out he might be because he unlike the other two he’s not as positionless as Harper and Castle or he’s a guard now point or shooting he’s just a guard you know he I don’t think he’ll survive as a four i don’t think he’ll survive as a three maybe barely but that’s it you know the Harper and Castle they man they can play one two three and four so yeah I hope it’s longer time in San Antonio for Fox because it’s rare that a big name like him star says “I want to go to San Antonio.” And we got it you know and I think he’s still got five seasons i think minimum he’s still got five seasons left you know and I think that’s plenty of time yeah exactly exactly buy or sell Matt that you will shave your hair like Victor Wimayama and join a Shaolin Temple sell so I’m not doing You’re not doing that i know Jeremy told us he might be willing but I am not that That’s not in the cards for me i’m going tell you I think I would i think I’ll do it you think so yeah I think I’ll do it yeah I’m I’m crazy enough to do it i I’ll It just sounds I know it probably sounds grueling like and strict and the diet and the getting up early and whatnot but it’s those workouts man i want to try those workouts yeah I want to try that i’ll hire I’ll hire a Spurs fan to go follow you and take pictures of your entire time there how are those How are those people getting close that close to him like I think I mean you in San Antonio that’s unheard of right i I was wondering that myself but that I think whenever he landed or whenever he got to the train station in China to leave there was a cluster of fans waiting as if they knew he was going to be there i feel like they just there’s got to be people there who know how that stuff works and know when you know when he’ll be there where he’ll be somehow they always knew where he was so yeah i mean they kind of in the toy store looking for Lego sets and I mean that that that’s how detailed they got i mean in San Antonio it’s more of a shock if you see him like at the zoo or or at a restaurant in China it was like “Ah he’s there oh he’s there oh he’s there.” And then fans are getting close to him yes we’re getting jealous right now everybody like why did they get close to Wimpy but we can’t uh but you know okay so Matt is selling he will not shave his head and join the Shaolin Temple and join the monster not for me but your host probably would no I’m not lying i I definitely that would be very intriguing for me i’d love to try it he is Matt Guzman with Spurs on Sports Illustrated make sure to follow him on X at MattGzn matt what do you have cooking well it’s more like where I’m going um officially going to New York for the draft to get some of that coverage out there and show everyone what it what’s going on with the Spurs whether they use two and 14 or not so I hope they have used two and 14 because can you imagine spending all that money and time airline stress just for them there’s no true person one person yeah i don’t I don’t know what I would do i might be a little upset but you know think about it and then the draft now is not one day it’s now two days so do you really want to stay for second round picks you know and a player who may or may not be there right you know find out i used to live in New York City and I went to countless NBA drafts i mean more than two my both hands can count and and I was fortunate enough to live there so they only had one pick i was like “Okay I can just go back home.” You know one two three I’m done but I I remember hearing media members that took the time to fly at they’re like “One pick one pick.” Or the worst is one pick and they’re not here yeah that was the worst yeah that that’s that’s even worse i remember Yes not to open up old wounds but remember the Josh Primo one he was not at the draft and but he was in New York City so he just had his party like at a restaurant in New York City so I’m like “Oh.” And then there was like at that time all that nonsense had to happen obviously yeah so you know we were all like the good news in the good news in that realm is it looks like there’s 24 players in the great room this year so I I feel like the chances are pretty good that Yeah if you took the time to fly out there your players going to be there yeah absolutely again that’s where you got to follow Matt on X on his on his Twitter page or X page at MattGz man Matt thank you for Deals been done since Durant decided he wants the spurs specifically they’re just waiting for the playoffs to end before they send the press release and the league wants him there too, to extend his career and exposure and to boost Wemby so everyone could start making more money off of them both,
I have been at the "take it or leave it" point for the past 2 weeks. Spurs don't NEED Durant. I would love for him to play here but not at the expense of our future. Let one of the other teams over pay for a 37yr old KD who will probably just come to the Spurs anyway when his 1 year is done.
Everything I have heard from people like Shams and Windhorst are that KD prefers a team where he is not being relied upon as "the guy" and just wants to play fun hoops, so that is why San Antonio is his main choice. In In Houston, he would be brought in and expected to get them over that hump and he doesn't really want that stress anymore in his final years as a player.
Rockets are the most desperate team in the nba , they’re like street hookers asking for money. 😂
Imagine if Spurs could get a 28 yr old Durant. O wait. Thats Markkanen.
with the 38th pick in the 2025 NBA draft, the San Antonio Spurs select R.J. Felton ECU
Dude on another podcast made an interesting point. Try to trade the Pelicans for Milwaukee's 2 future FRPs with #14 and a future Spurs' FRP. That boosts the package for Giannis with Milwaukee's own picks they control. If there's still any talks there at all
Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper over 37 years old Kevin Durant. All day everyday.
