Mavericks Trading Back Into 1st Rd Of 2025 NBA Draft? Cooper Flagg Meets Nico Harrison | Mavs Rumors

[Music] we are covering the latest Mavericks draft rumors here on today’s show welcome in to Mavericks Today by Chad Sports i’m Jeffrey Cooperstein great to be with you guys here on a Wednesday we are celebrate with you guys this new era of Mavericks basketball speaking of Cooper Flag he was in Dallas on Tuesday for his official visit with the Dallas Mavericks and as we’ve talked about here on the show multiple times this is the only visit Cooper Flag is taking and this is the only lottery visit that the Mavericks are hosting which basically tells you Cooper Flag going to be a lock for that number one overall pick and a couple of details from the flag workout that we know right now is that he met with multiple players and team officials both at the American Airlines Center and at the Mavericks practice facility right across I35 from the arena the visit included a light onc court workout we aren’t sure the exact details of what all that entailed but I’m sure it was nothing too physically demanding for Mr flag and then he had dinner with Jason Kid and Nico Harrison among other top brass from the Maverick’s front office and one thing I did want to focus on here is Jason Kid and his role in this thing he has been kind of leading the welcoming committee for Cooper Flag here to Dallas in his visit and what this tells me is that he is committed to the Maverick’s future there’s been all the rumors surrounding the New York Knicks and how they formally requested to interview Kidd for their head coaching position which the Mavericks obviously denied kid still does have two years remaining on his deal with the Mavericks and I do think at the end of the day that he’s going to get an extension from the Dallas Mavericks here whether it be before the draft or after the draft i’m not exactly sure of what the timing is going to be but it does tell me that he’s committed he is present at the Mavericks facility he wants to be a part of this thing going forward with Kyrie with Anthony Davis and with Cooper Flag as this is a team he envisions that can win a lot of ball games and go deep into the NBA playoffs and when you look at the healthy rotation it’s hard not to get excited about this Mavericks team now you know you’re not getting Kyrie back until January at the earliest i think it’s going to be the All-Star break before Kyrie returns but you pair him alongside Klay Thompson Anthony Davis with Flag and Lively this is what I think the ideal starting five is for the Mavericks now if PJ Washington and Daniel Gaffford are still on the roster alongside with Max Christie and Naji Marshall you have a lot of options for your starting five if you’re the Mavericks you could play Flag at the two you could play him at the three or at the four one thing I do know though is Flag is going to be in the starting lineup day one we had people like Gilbert Arenas talking about how he’s going to start the year coming off the bench that is not going to be the case cooper Flag is going to be in the starting lineup day one sean Heath will be announcing in his rookie season from Duke number 32 or whatever number he’s going to wear cooper Flag he will be in that starting five and the Mavericks do have multiple options and this was Nico Harrison’s vision when he was envisioning his perfect team for the Mavericks whether you like it or not he wanted a team with versatility on the offensive and defensive end where guys can play multiple positions they can switch on defense and that is what Nico thought was going to be a championship team adding Cooper Flag to the mix only heightens that versatility this team is going to have so I gave you my ideal starting five with Cooper Flag down in the comments let me know what your ideal starting five is for possibility of the Mavericks trading back into round one raphael Barlo of Locked On who is their main draft expert over there i wanted to shout him out because he said the Mavericks could be a team to trade back in to the back end of the first round to go get a point guard which we all know is one of their biggest needs uh as the roster construction side of things goes so some late round point guard targets that our draft expert here at Chat Sports Nick Roloff gave me to talk about are Walter Clayton out of Florida Ben Saraf out of Israel who played over in Germany Nolan Trayor and Cam Jones out of Marquette i do want to give a focus here to Walter Clayton the 2025 national champion out of the Florida Gator who I think would be a fantastic fit for this team and I would frankly love Walter Clayton on this squad he’s the ideal backup point guard to Kyrie Irving in my opinion and could he start for the first 55 60 games of the year in limited minutes where you give him a heavy rotation play him alongside the likes of Brandon Williams and maybe even some Naji Marshall there a little bit to take up the point guard minutes while Kyrie is out all I know is he had a generational tournament run he bailed out the Florida Gator multiple times especially in that Elite 8 game where he made that clutch shot he made multiple clutch shots down the stretch in the NCAA tournament to Florida lifting the NCAA title he averaged 22.3 points 47% from the field 43 and a half from three in six games of the tournament and he shot it fantastic for Florida all season and was one of their best players on a team that was one of the best teams in the country from start to finish if the Mavs could end up with Walter Clayton for a package let’s say it’s Daniel Gaffford and or PJ Washington involved the Mavericks maybe get an extra draft pick back in order to fill another need there on the roster it’d certainly be something Nico Harrison would have to consider now Mark Stein did talk about the Mavericks uh desire to keep both Gaffford and Washington there on the roster but I’m not sure if that’s just feasible especially if a guy like Walter Clayton is available who would be a much better fit and I do think he’d be a better fit than Ben Saraf Nolan Trayor or Cam Jones if I had to pick my second favorite out of this list I do think it would be Trayore because I think he would be the purest point guard of them all i do think that he’ll end up being maybe the best pro out of these guys but right now I think I would take Walter Clayton to be my backup point guard for the Dallas Mavericks let me know what you guys think though should the Mavs trade back into the first round if you think they should type T for trade if you think they should not type P for pass i’m curious to hear what you guys have to say and before we go I do want to talk about the report that dropped earlier today about the Mavericks showing potential interest in Colin Ston the guard from the Utah Jazz i think that the Jazz would be an interesting trade partner for the Mavericks the Mavs have shown interest in Colin Ston before and look with Gaffford not maybe maybe not being a someone who the Mavericks are going to keep longterm with one year left on his deal I do think that it could be a potential trade between Gaffford and Ston and the Utah Jazz maybe it involves the Mavericks trading back into the first round of the NBA draft in some convoluted three or four team deal i’m not sure how exactly it would work but what I do know is the Mavericks need point guard help that’s why we talked about Walter Clayton and the other guys on that list and Colin Ston would be someone that could absolutely start or come off the bench he’s done both i believe he’s won a sixman of the year right Smitty has he i I don’t know but he’s definitely been in that discussion um look he’s a guy who’s going to get you 16 or 17 points tonight he can shoot it pretty well he’s not going to be the most efficient guy ever he’s not going to you know lock down on the defensive end but Colin Saxon is someone who can absolutely do both so I’d be interested in a potential Colin Saxon trade we’ll talk about that here on the next show we’ll go a little more in depth on what that would look like here on Mavericks Today whether it be later today or tomorrow so that’s why you hit that subscribe button
