Breaking down the Toronto Raptors reported interest in Kings’ guard Malik Monk
1 hour down three to go and as promised we are joined by the one the only Chris Persian of Clutch Points NBA writer for Clutch Points and we are really happy Chris was able to join us chris thank you so much how you doing man i’m good thanks for having me appreciate you uh taking the time here to chat i’m definitely excited i think the Kings are potentially one of the most potentially one of the least exciting teams to watch this NBA offseason like I really think there is a wide spectrum and that unpredictability is ultimately why we watch sports so if it’s the offseason you know we don’t got games to watch but man the Kings are going to give us what we want in terms of not really knowing what’s coming next i think they always seem to do that Chris well let’s start here we spent some time yesterday talking about the article that you put out about Malik Monk and the Toronto Raptors i was trying to wrap my head around it a little bit and Malik Monk had quite the quite the confusing season at one point he was coming off the bench at one point he was the starting point guard at one point he was a starting two guard then he went back to the bench and he said he played basically about four different roles this past season so I was curious about his value and his fit can you can you break down the Malik Monk situation with the Raptors and maybe any other teams that might be interested yeah for sure i I think Monk is someone who you know I I I’m not sure that the counting stats like you were just saying can tell the full story because of the fact that he had different roles you know if he felt it was inconsistent that’s that’s the most firsthand source possible right there right so right for him to have a careerhigh points per game in a season that he felt was pretty tumultuous is impressive but you know ultimately I’m not going to weigh that too much the same way I’m not going to weigh the fact that this was the second worst three-point shooting season of his career too much so I’m I’m not going to hold either of these things immensely against him there was a whole lot of turmoil last season like the gossipy reports we got about Monk wasn’t talking to Fox or Monk Fox didn’t talk to Monk during his trade saga and then I was I heard someone told me that that was because Monk didn’t talk to Fox during his free agency saga and it’s like so what are they getting back at each other by not speaking like this is the strangest um whatever uh I just think I just think this is an interesting situation for the Sacramento Kings because they are in a situation where they’re very much uh up close with the fork in the road if I may like I’m sure you’re very familiar with the notion nowadays from NBA fans that if your team isn’t one of the five best in the league it better be one of the five worst yes um fans the same way that discussion about anything in the world is so polarized nowadays fans kind of the same way with the NBA standings we better be top five or bottom five we better be good or tanking good you know and that’s why fan bases like the Bulls the Kings uh are so frustrated all the time because it seems like their teams are fine living in that middle ground um and why it must be so frustrating for Sacramento Kings fans who just watched this team just a few years ago really take great steps towards that top five uh part of the spectrum of the extreme end of the spectrum to now be falling apart like this but that’s the thing do they want to strategically tear it apart or take what’s left and retool pivot you know so uh what I mean what what do you think what would you do yeah i mean as far as Malik is concerned I just don’t necessarily know why the Raptors would think that’s the missing piece that That’s my question with Malik Monk it’s he the missing piece I guess to get you in the dance and now everybody’s basically trying to follow I think the Pacers model of if we get in anything can happen if we get in and you know somebody might get injured or whatever multiple people in the case of the Pacers and you’re able to kind of rock and roll from there but that’s more so what leads me to my my next question with some of these bigger fish and some of the the bigger halls maybe the Kings might be able to get back we we saw some of these reports about Demar D Rozan basically being a consolation prize to the teams like a Miami Heat uh teams like that where they did not get Kevin Durant as far as he’s concerned uh what what do you think about his his fit with not just the Heat but some of these other teams basically any team that is interested in Kevin Durant that doesn’t get Kevin Durant whether it’s the Rockets now I saw the Grizzlies obviously the Timberwolves where do you think Demar De Rozan’s value lies right now and who might be interested yeah I think it’s kind of similar to Monk right where you’re in a situation where and the reason I asked you what you would do if you were the Kings is because if you would go towards a rebuild well then sure weaponize your salary cap you know take on money that other teams don’t want and get rewarded with draft capital um there’s this package that keeps floating around like different NBA circles i keep hearing um and I I know right now that it will infuriate Kings fans so I I share this reluctantly but now now we have to hear it the the framework of a deal where the Kings land the 20th pick in the draft and Haime Hakez Jr uh from the Miami Heat uh they’d also get you know maybe Duncan Robinson as the salary in that deal but what you’re thinking is well why why does this piss me off well Demar De Rozan would be going to Miami but the name I keep hearing and maybe this is just uh a game of telephone gone wrong that’s why I’m not I haven’t reported this i’m not going to write an article on it but I keep hearing Devin Carter who was the guy I had you know I had ranked fifth overall in last year’s draft class i thought he was a stud uh I keep hearing his name you know being included in discussions as someone that could potentially be on the move if if he it would grease the wheels for a full reset yeah um I I wouldn’t be too confident in saying that they’re going to move de that’s just a name I’ve heard come up that kind of I went huh okay i I wasn’t expecting him in these hypotheticals you know these potential hypotheticals I guess is the way to really hedge it and put it um but I think with Monk you know like if you’re the Kings and you want to tear it down well do you have some is there is there a contract like small that the Kings would want to move off of that they could attach to Malik Monk if they got back RJ Barrett and some draft capital oh yeah and then now you’re kind of you know so that’s how these things can kind of get started um maybe that’s what a deal looks like with with Toronto you know I I don’t know that um the Raptors think they’re a Malik Monk away from contention so much as they think that they’re a Malik Monk away from being on the right track to be ready to put a good team around there to be ready now to put a good team around Scotty Barnes uh a back court like Quickly and Monk with Barnes and Purle okay all of a sudden now this is not like this bonafide 12th seed team that they were last year like all of a sudden this is at least a playin team um so I I would think like that coupled with you know do they think Grady Dick is ready do they think he’s someone who can really step up um into that kind of role just yet yeah uh that could be playing into this and the reason I talk about Toronto to answer your question about Miami is because like I started out I think it’s the same thing so does Miami think Haime Hakez is ready to step up into a bigger role to help this team be in the playin be in the playoff conversation uh maintain that Miami Heat culture of winning you know the New York Knicks just did a rebuild in four years pretty much without tanking once and then in the fifth year they go to the Eastern Conference Finals so the blueprint is there especially if you’re in a city that players you know don’t mind living in i’m sure with the Miami and Sacramento weather that these teams are thinking okay the blueprint’s there the Knicks just did it without tanking once we can stay competitive and just show teams we’re on show team other teams and players that we’re on the right track one more question before we move on from Toronto and you mentioned his name briefly and I I do think it’s interesting not in a Malik Monk deal per se but I would be intrigued we look at timelines and whether it adds up yeah what is What is the thought process with Grady Dick and the Raptors what what do they think he could be do you know what his ceiling is supposed to be i just have Is he an untouchable i don’t know what the Raptors they have this young talent and this is not just the Raptors a lot of these teams they got this young talent and if they’re they aren’t good immediately they’re just not really sure what to do with them yeah i mean you know for the Raptors and Grady Dick I would think them trading for Malik Monk being you know in part potentially being in part inspired by them being worried that he’s not ready for like a starting role or a six-man role like that’s not a concern that’s just like if if this worked like the NFL Grady would be get getting drafted this off seasonason or next off seasonason where he would be 20 you know so like 21 so like these guys do need a couple years under them to contribute on serious teams like you see teams like Charlotte they get their young guys in the rotation and involved and everything right away because they draft a million guys that play the same position and they’re never good enough to where they have enough veterans to where these young guys don’t get minutes so you know a lot of times yes the best way to develop your young talent is to play your young talent but is developing your young talent the number one organizational priority over winning also factors in here so I think for Toronto we’re seeing them flip this switch right now I I think this is the summary that they are even if it doesn’t happen right say they don’t make any move that allows this to happen say the Raptors go into game one with a team that is like just as good as game 82’s team last year um they at least try to flip that switch and make their number one goal winning basketball games before developing their talent uh I don’t know which way the Kings are gonna go but that right now that switch is in the middle you know they have Lavine D Rozan Sabonis and I’m missing some Monk they have Lavine D Rozan Sabonis and Monk that’s a lot of shots that’s a lot of usage that’s a lot of passes that’s a lot of turnovers rebounds all that valuable experience going to guys who are not producing results that keep the team in the perennial playoff conversation does a full year under head coach Doug Christie some added talent in the offseason resigning Jake Laravia like do things like this make them good enough maybe maybe they’ll think so but can you name the teams that plan to tank in the West next year because the Jazz alle they alleged that they’re not planning on it right maybe the Grizzlies now that they they shocked the world during the NBA finals with a blockbuster um maybe maybe maybe the Suns if they totally tear it down who’s taking in the West like it shouldn’t be that hard to tank right so you can kind of pull a prey with Shay where the guy was going to have an allNBA season but oh his back and oh his leg and oh his we can’t win this game is hurting him so he needs to sit and like you know maybe maybe you see that i don’t I don’t know what exact approach you see but I think these teams now are all trying to kind of flip that switch or figure out in the Kings situation in the Heat situation i think the Heat want to flip it giannis rumors KD rumors uh whoever else rumors you know if if the the Condor Clippers mascot was on the trade market the Heat would be interested right now like they feel like that kind of team um we’ll see which way they go sometimes you want to flip the switch but you can’t actually find the strength with which to pull that lever for the Raptors that strength is Kevin Durant for the Heat that strength is Kevin Durant um so all of a sudden one of those two teams at minimum maybe both get left hanging and that’s why you’re hearing reports of well who’s next raptors Malik Monk Heat Demar De Rozan like my big takeaway from that is the Kings seem open for business yeah talking to Chris Persion an NBA writer for clutch points chris the first thing I thought when Desmond Bane was traded for the four first round picks and I know some of those picks are better than others two rotation pieces and Cole Anthony and KCP the first thing I thought Chris was what in the world Damont Sabonis would go for in a deal like this now it’s been reported that the Kings are going to meet with Damont Sabonis for clarity everybody needs clarity out here in Sacramento chris if you are Scott Perry and the Kings organization even if the idea was oh we don’t want Damonte Sabonis to leave we want to build around him you know he’s been all MBA a couple times do you see this Desmond Bane deal and say well hold on a second let’s at least maybe keep the phone light open just in case somebody wants to give us a godfather offer because plain and simple I know he’s older but he’s not that much more expensive plain and simple Damonte Sabonis is a more productive player to me right now than Desmond Bait yeah you know I think it’s tough to make it so singularly angled because it’s like okay if you’re a team that is good but you’re just so bad at rebounding and you don’t move the ball enough well I I think I know a guy that could help out right but if you’re a team that has rebounding and has a nice point guard that facilitates like okay well then you have some passing you have some defense maybe you want to fit that mold better maybe you want the 3 and D wing so positional value their specific skill sets i think both matter bane is kind of like uh the super prototypical 90s shooting guard but built for the modern NBA right um and Sabonis is kind of like the modern NBA big um and so that to me is is something that you know depends on the team but if I were the Kings you know there’s at least one team I’ve heard that would be interested in trading for Damonte Sabonis or has some level of interest in trading for Damonte Sabonis and I’ve not been told what their best offer is or what their best offer has been to Sacramento because I don’t know if they’ve officially made one but I do know that they’ve at least talked with the Kings about it so the Kings didn’t like hang up the phone on them mhm this like I mentioned in my article about Malik Monk this could just be Scott Perry saying “Hey I know one really easy way to find out what my guys are worth around the NBA.” Yeah uh and it’s to find out you know um but that doesn’t mean he’s not he’s not contractually obligated to deal any of them you know if he got on the phone right now and said “Hey you know what any trades you want to make Orlando?” And they said “Huh well we’re thinking of acquiring a guard.” And I actually I wouldn’t be surprised if Orlando you know reached out about Malik Monk before trading for Bane even if just to get a market check right like teams do this all the time where the Magic are about to pull this trade for Bane they don’t want Malik Monk actually but they call the Kings and say they do to find out what the Kings want to figure out if they’re getting hosed for Bane like teams do this all the time this is kind of the same thing with the Knicks coaching search like teams call teams and coaches all the time and they’re like “Huh?” Um and that’s that’s how you find out you find out the hard way um you know you you find out the hard way and uh I I do think the Kings are willing to find out the hard way just kind of what their guys are worth sabonis is someone who I don’t know if what the Kings would get for him right now necessarily makes it a deal for them that they’re like it jumps off the page you know like I don’t know if someone will offer such a draft capital heavy uh full house of first round picks for him that puts the Kings in a situation where they’re like “Wow that’s a free reset button we don’t we liked our core better than other people did we didn’t think we had to tear it down but that many Yeah hit that you know so um you know may maybe that offer comes across the table i wouldn’t personally hold your breath waiting for it but something like a negative contract a contract that’s viewed around the league as uh undesirable to have on your books coupled with young talent maybe one stud young player maybe a litany of of pro uh you know promising young players and then draft capital to compensate for the quality of the young talent you Maybe maybe the deal uh maybe the team that’s interested offers bad salary uh and a really promising young player that like doesn’t have any offensive game but like man can they defend so they they have some all defense potential and it’s like oh then maybe just one first round pick or one first and one protected first would get it done if the if the offer is a negative contract and a bunch of players that are you know on their way to signing like minimum second deals as proit maybe it would take several first round picks but that’s the difference with these deals right like you kind of alluded to this earlier when you said some picks were worth more than others in that Bane trade like yeah they traded two really valuable firsts but they also dumped the KCP deal which once they saw him away from Jokic they might must have had some buyers remorse or clearly did and Cole Anthony someone who yeah has has existent value as a you know spunky young guard but isn’t necessarily someone teams are are clamoring to build around um yeah well then they they had to attach some good picks but like the Knicks they traded five first for Male Bridges they the players they gave up were Boon Bdanovich who played zero games this year because he had two surgeries uh and that was the salary they gave up so yeah they gave up five first round picks but if the NBA landscape thinks Jaylen Brunson’s as good as I think Jaylen Brunson is and you know the Knicks can keep doing what they’re doing to some extent those picks aren’t going to be in the top 20 so then it’s a little different mhm that Phoenix pick I’d be surprised if it wasn’t in the top 20 so chris before we get you out of here I I do have to ask and I know you’re probably not going to answer but you said there was a team that you had heard had called about Damont Sabonis i’m not going to ask you for the team because I know you’re not going to tell me but can you tell me if it was in the East or West it was a Western Conference team that called about Sabonis so um and again I’m sure multiple teams are calling i’m sure you know I don’t want to just throw team names out there because that’s irresponsible but like good teams what they do is they make these calls willy-nilly like it like say you’re you are a young burgeoning radio host in a in a city like uh Sacramento and you’re always trying to figure out what’s your worth what are you worth to your station this that and you’re like hello this is uh Bon Miles i’m a young radio host and I I want to know what you pay me like that’s that’s that’s a decent way to find out what you’d be worth to some different places but uh it also doesn’t exactly work perfectly because they don’t know oh this is Allen this is his name brand he’s got this many followers so it’s tough because when you call teams to gauge player value you’re not dealing with the exact team right that you’d be dealing with but I’m sure plenty of teams are are calling the Kings about all their players just figuring out you know oh new GM what’s he trying to do meanwhile that new GM is probably calling teams about his players being like “Ah I’m a new GM i’m trying to figure out what these guys are worth right now.” I remember what we valued them at in New York two years ago but what are they worth around the league now um so yeah I don’t know that I’d make anything too much i’m not saying he’s out the door he’s on his way no but it’s different from what we had heard about the Kings my colleague Brett Seagull reported just recently that you know he had heard um the Kings were not looking to move Sabonis the Kings were not looking to move D Rozan but they might if the deal is right and it’s like all of a sudden now a few weeks later things might change like that’s still the state of things right now but it maybe in two weeks we find out that while you and I spoke the King’s mindset was maybe we trade Sabonis if the deal is right and we definitely want to move tomorrow like who knows we don’t know the moves will tell us uh unless Scott calls in right now and lets you know you know we’re not going to know exactly what they’re thinking in their their war room so to speak but what you can do is piece together what you have and it seems like from what is piece together a bull that the Kings are at least trying to at the very least they’re trying to gauge what their guys are worth around the league that could be Perry just getting settled in his new new digs right um or it could be indicative of something more i know for sure like the Raptors have been interested in Monk since the trade deadline and the Kings then were like “Ah relax.” Right um but now they’re talking about it again i don’t know if that means the Kings are like “Hey are you still interested?” I doubt it was that i think it’s more so the Raptors actually I can tell you it’s more so the Raptors being “Hey we’re still interested.” Um so I do think the Kings are are slightly more receptive to those talks now than they were before um but I don’t know that that means that they’re ready to tear everything you know maybe they view getting RJ Barrett as a positional change you know oh now that now they have Lavine if they’re going to deal D Rozan for someone a promising young talent and draft capital then maybe fun maybe there’s like a three team trade in there somewhere like 20 goes to 20 goes to the Raptors and nine goes to the Kings like may maybe they trade up you know like maybe that’s why they’d be willing to include Carter it’s you we don’t really know so um I do know that that Raptors top 10 pick is you know they’re willing to move that thing so no if I don’t know that they’d move it for Monk but maybe they move it in a deal that lands them a different pick in the first round and that’s what they trade for you know so we’ll see we’ll see how it all plays out i just know that the Kings seem a little even just slightly more open to business than they were at last year’s trade deadline obviously new management in town uh they’re ready now to to have a full year under Doug Christie as head coach so maybe that’s something they want to see you know him and Sabonis how they work as a head coach star player pairing uh with someone like Lavine to play off of him i could see it uh I think that’s kind of the point though is the Kings are in this phase right now of figuring out what exactly is next chris before we get you out of here we’re up against it and this has been outstanding chris Persian who covers the NBA for clutch points but you also do some work with WFAN so you’re familiar with New York what were your thoughts when the Kings got Scott Perry you think it’s a a good pairing for the Kings to bring in a GM lot Scott like Scott Perry and see what he can do he’s got lots of experience in the NBA um sometimes there is value to not making the most risky flashy highest upside higher when you’re just trying to I call them organizations without organization uh if you’re an organization without organization then maybe you just want someone like Perry who was there when you know his team drafted Kevin Durant to the NBA or was there when his team drafted R.J barrett to the NBA like that’s a guy who’s been around for quite a while uh that’s a good range of time in there you know so he’s been with the Magic he’s been with the Sonics he’s been with the Knicks he’s been with all sorts of he’s been in all sorts of different roles um and I think the reason he continually gets jobs in the NBA is because of the depth and breadth of his connections he is such a well-connected guy he you know really knows what he’s doing he’s a people person when it comes to dealing you know he knows what he’s doing when it comes to dealing with people he’s genuine uh he’s he’s a nice genuine person i I my one experience meeting him like very kind to me so that’s all you know my firsthand all I can say uh but all in all like it makes sense why the Kings would go with someone like him i do wonder though and this is nothing against Perry because maybe Christy is the kind of coach that he would have hired if they had a vacancy but I do wonder if there was some sort of organizational push to keep Christy because Perry being so amendable to just keeping you know the organization announced they were keeping him pretty much and then hired a GM like I you know um it felt like that’s how it happened anyway uh so I’m not sure exactly how it went down but something I might look into because maybe you know Christy has fans up top in the organization and Perry liking Christy or Perry’s willingness to work with him was part of how uh he became such a good you know clear top candidate for the Kings uh but all all in all even if there was nothing to do with that he’s got experience he’s got connections so someone who can just settle things in Sacramento but that also kind of says to me maybe they’re not looking to contend at this moment like they might be leaning towards tearing it down before they they buy we’re going to find out pretty soon there Chris chris Percion and be sure to follow him on social media great follow on social media who covers the NBA 4 clutch points chris this has been enlightening thank you so much for joining us we got to do it again man and when you do some of that homework and research you were talking about be sure to let me know and we will talk to you again soon allan sounds like a plan this was a great time great conversation i hope your listeners appreciate it as much as I did thanks so much man have a great rest of your Wednesday thank you so much that was Chris Persian of Clutch Points when we return we break down everything that we heard from Chris we also talk about what exactly we should think as far as the current rotation that the Kings are throwing out there
Kris Pursiainen, NBA reporter for ClutchPoints, joined The Allen Stiles Show to discuss his reporting that the Toronto Raptors are interested in pursuing Sacramento Kings guard Malik Monk.

Man trade Devin Carter 😂. Super underwhelmed by his game and injury history.
They want him it will take more than what the grizzlies got.
3 1st round picks +Grady Dick
if raptors are giving up IQ or RJ for monk and filler. the kings are sending a top 7-8 protected pick. they dont even need monk with the guards they have already who need playing time. monk dont fit the timeline of scottie barnes as well and is a poor defender.
Lies! Just stop!! N never mention Rj Barrett again!!!!
100% guessing it was the warriors asking about Sabonis😂
Man PLEASE dont get rid of Malik Monk good shooter and good person
